FMP Adaptation Thought #1
Having watched and rewatched Full Metal Panic multiple times this year (... and read and reread... and watched the Director’s Cut of Fighting Boy Meets Girl) I have lots of Thoughts (tm) about the anime adaptation as a whole. I realized that actually, the first season... is good. It’s not a perfect adaptation and some information that’s actually relevant gets left out, but it’s solid and there are a lot of things the anime did that I preferred to the novel.
First thing! The opening, which is 25% of why I didn’t like the Director’s Cut; the Director’s cut gives us some bonus footage of the novel’s prologue, where Kaname and Sousuke try to get printer paper from the teacher’s room and Sousuke sets off the sprinklers as cover, ruining the paper and infuriating Kaname, who wonders why she puts up with him but, oh yeah, it all happened a month ago...
I think tonally, this isn’t the best place to start. The anime’s first season went a different route, first showing Kaname half-asleep muttering Whispered knowledge before her chicken alarm clock goes off. It has that one weird background music with the chanting that’s kind of a baffling choice compared to the rest of the soundtrack, but it’s an excellent place to start because
a) It shows us that Kaname does have something strange about her, but is probably unaware of it. The scene does a pan around her apartment, showing the photos she has of her and her family, there’s some footage of the neighborhood; it’s all really normal scenery superimposed with Kaname’s sleep-muttering about black technology.
b) it saves the humor for later, which I  think makes everything funnier.
Scene two is the Mithril member rescuing Mira from the Soviet base and Sousuke rescuing her. This is one of my favorite scenes in the series, and although there are things I like about the novel version, I actually prefer the anime. (The description in the novel of the M9 kneeling in front of Mira like a knight in front of a tattered princess always gets me--also from Mira’s eyes, Sousuke’s uniform and headgear look ninja-like, which is a neat pair up with the Arbalest also being described as looking like a ninja later.)
(Bonus: this scene has my favorite song on the soundtrack, but it’s only used in this scene for some reason T_T)
The biggest change between the novel and the anime is that Sousuke doesn’t talk to Mira until he approaches her. In the novel, he speaks to her from the AS, and when he gets out, she asks him about his dead comrade and if it makes him sad (he says “I don’t know”). The guy that rescued Mira gets a little less screen time in the anime.
I prefer that Sousuke doesn’t talk to Mira until absolutely necessary. Both methods (the novel’s conversation and the anime’s lack of any dialogue) convey that Sousuke, having just taken down a Hind with the M9, is excellent at that part of the job, but has little idea how to interact with other people. The switch from showing it in his reaction to Mira’s question to whether he’s sad about his dead comrade to him just not having a clear reaction to it at all. Mao and Kurz’s clips of banter in the background assure Mira they’re here to rescue her, Sousuke knows he didn’t step on her and she didn’t get hit with shrapnel or anything, so he doesn’t see a reason to say anything.
It makes Sousuke look really cool. And then knocks him a peg down by having him clearly unprepared for regular high school life, and knocks him straight off the ladder when he actually arrives at school and is a total disaster.
Sousuke and Kaname sort of share the protagonist role, but Sousuke is the true protagonist in the end, so I think it’s best to follow him looking cool and heroic in the beginning and then watch as he hilariously bumbles his way through his mission to protect Kaname.
And even though Kaname’s scene at the very beginning is short, it makes her seem kind of mysterious, and her cute apartment gives absolutely zero hints as to what a raging tsundere she is, so if you’re watching for the first time, you’re probably as shocked as Kurz when she starts chewing Kyouko out for setting her up on a blind date.
The prologue scene is shown at the end of the arc in the anime, which I think is a perfect fit. There’s no reason to frame the entirety of Fight Boy Meets Girl as a flashback. I don’t think it hurts, I just think the anime did a really excellent job of the set up and then the DC wasted time with the prologue and cut out some other stuff that I liked T^T
I wrote all this and realized dang, this is long and I have lots of thoughts about the entire series & the anime adaptation! So I’ll make more posts on it later. I just really like the TV anime’s opening, it’s so good. Gonzo did pretty alright on that.

Space 10
Carbon Banks
Each piece of Carbon Banks furniture would feature a distinctive pattern acting as a key that binds the NFT to the item. Scanning the pattern would mint an NFT on the blockchain, which the owner can access using a private key.
The evolving digital NFT displays milestones, rewards maintenance and repairs, and narrates the chair’s life cycle. Viewable through augmented reality or shared virtual spaces, it helps create an emotional connection akin to nurturing plants and instils a sense of guardianship for physical objects. In doing so, Carbon Banks incentivises sustainable furniture practices, redefining our relationship with material possessions while exploring the potential of digital twins.
Critical Analysis
By creating a digital twin of each piece of furniture, owners can track its lifecycle, maintenance, and repairs, fostering a sense of emotional connection and responsibility. This innovative approach encourages sustainable practices and explores the potential of blockchain technology in the consumer goods industry.
Personal Viewpoint
Personally, I find the concept intriguing as it introduces new ways to encourage sustainability and mindfulness in consumption habits. However, the concept may reinforce consumerism by emphasising ownership and tracking of material possessions.
Findings to Inform Project
How can I create an emotional connect between users and nature?
How can I foster a deeper connection with nature?

FMP: Shifting Project Focus (?). LO2 & LO3.
Tumblr media
My new idea is the revitalisation of the seaside town of Hastings, which I visited with my family in summer 2023. Though the inner town was more busy and exciting, the sea front was dismal and nothing was open. This seemingly abandoned part was called 'Flamingo Park' and was notably tacky in its overall design. It is a common artistic approach to seaside attractions now, but I feel there is a missing essence of Britishness and an opportunity to integrate the towns historic past into the design.
The town centre:

I remember on my trip to Hastings, my mum had said how the redesign of the seafront or the analysis of the visual language of beaches would be an interesting topic for my dissertation. Of course, I took a different route in my dissertation but this concept has popped up again and ties perfectly with my aim of exploring more historical styles. I am fortunate enough to be connected to someone whose hometown is Hastings, and he has kindly offered to take more pictures of the seafront when he's back there, as the one above is the only one I have!

Major Project FMP - Research - David Wilson - LO1
youtube
Zoetrope - Praxinoscope
Wilson describes what and how to create a praxinoscope and what the justifications behind his designs are in relation to the song. Notice how this plate looks like a bike wheel in terms of its seperation.
Tumblr media
It highlights the problems you may have on creating this
16 frames and 16 mirrors = stay still
15 = left to right as disc is moving faster
17 = reverse effect - slower
natural balance in rotation - death creates life - taken into real life parallels in life
Tumblr media
Overhead shots are created by matching frame rate to that of the spinning.
This shows another good example utilisng the use of mirrors and how it can create visuals dependent on angles etc.
The incorporation of repetition and the employed methods for creating various patterns serve as points of reference for my experimentation, aiding in analysis. The transitions in these patterns are intricately linked to the evolving beats and narrative of the song. Notably, they enter from different directions, with the one on the right capturing a meeting of tension as the faces gradually move towards each other.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The narrative unfolds as a journey, portraying what I interpret as a business man's progression from being overworked and stressed to eventually reaching his heavenly departure. This transformative experience takes on a dreamlike quality, evolving into a state of increasing chaos.
What I like about a music video focus is that every single song can have a different design and approach.
His work employs innovative transitions to visually depict crucial elements in the narrative, effectively immersing the audience back into the experience of music videos.
This exemplifies the seamless integration of real-life footage transitioning into illustrative animation, achieving a balanced and realistic portrayal. It effectively demonstrates the synergy between elements that can be replicated in person and those that benefit from an animated, illustrative touch.

Second Year Final Major Project: England
College: 2019
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Original artwork (right side): The Accolade, Edmund Blair Leighton.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For my FMP I drew my own version of ‘The Accolade’. This piece followed my research work done on the Romantics and Pre-Raphaelites.
During my second year of college I started to research more serious topics and political issues, such as: modern day slavery, feminism and the suffragettes, and classism. This involved visits to Manchester Art Gallery, a talk on the Suffragette movement, and an analysis of ‘Beasley Street’ by John Cooper Clarke, describing poverty in Salford.
We were given the option to decide our own FMP theme, so I decided to delve deeper into artistic movements throughout English history and how these movements related to society at the time. Following my initial research, I wanted to take elements of the Romantic and Pre-Raphaelite periods, such as the focus on human emotion, connecting with nature, and finding sense of self, and include them in my final piece.
My final piece depicts myself and my ‘protectors’, just like the Queen and her noble men in ‘The Accolade’. It shows myself knighting someone new into my world, surrounded by those I have knighted before. This piece was displayed in my local art gallery for a public exhibition, and I was incredibly proud of it.

1000 word Project Evaluation
In this final major project, I'm able to decide and to make an animation about the topic, Make Art Be Happy with new techniques I have learnt individually through tutorials on youtube. I have also discovered many different techniques and art styles through researching for the project.
Over the past years, I have spotted how the parent community disapproves of their own children pursuing studies and careers in design-related fields. By collecting information and statistics throughout these few years, it shows how parents worry about the financial stability of design-related careers, and how their mindsets are restricted since they are not familiar with these fields. So that I want to take this opportunity to create an accessible animation for both young and elderly to understand how designs can bring happiness and how it impacts the modern world.
Compared to previous animation projects that I have worked on, this time instead of sticking to a single art style of animation, I learnt advanced rigging, advanced lighting studies, better UV mappings and rendering skills. These skills improved my animation to a more attractive storytelling artwork, bringing more attention to animation details, emotions and expressions of the character. Eye-catching visual appeals and effective use of sounds allow my animation to be more memorable and engaging, providing my audiences with better visual experiences, hence, allowing it to stand out among my peers.
Throughout the animation process of my FMP, I have done research and analysis of techniques and art trends, these explorations allow me to have rich inspiration towards creating different styles of animation. I have particularly researched different distinctive art styles, for example, cartoon, realistic, and spider-verse. Having a view of various techniques of 3D artists, for instance, photorealism, sculpting and character design, motion graphics and visual effects, environment design and experimental rendering techniques. Through the process of research, I had a wider understanding of different art styles so I had a better idea of possibilities and what's suitable while designing various scenes for the animation.
Throughout extensive research, I have found Southern Shorty to be the most inspiring artist among all other artist research I had done, particularly in the realms of his character design and cartoon-style environment design. The primary reason I consistently reference this artist is due to their distinctive approach to character design, which sets them apart from others in the field. Additionally, Southern Shorty stands out by providing remarkably accessible and detailed tutorials compared to other artists. Their adept use of vibrant colours, exceptional texturing and shading skills had truly enchanted me, both in cartoon-style character design and the creation of semi-realistic environments. Their work has not just only caught my attention but also helps a lot with the character design, advanced rigging and the cartoon part in the animation with resources from a single artist.
In the beginning, while working on the storyline, I find it challenging to create seamless transitions that maintain the flow and enhance the storytelling experience. Before this project, I only had minor concepts and limited abilities to create a good storyline for the animation. However, while attempting the storyboard, I have done lots of research on the timing of the scene, effects and especially the order of the scenes to improve the fluency between scenes. While working on the storyline, I particularly enjoy the process of developing the theme and delivering the message of the animation. They allow me to delve into thought-provoking concepts and express them visually. In the end, I had successfully made a great storyline, but I have to practice more on storyboarding so that it will be easier while working on environment design and animating.
Throughout these 10 weeks of FMP, I also focused on different mediums of fine art to even further develop the skill area used in animation. Firstly, I learned how to utilize the blend tool at the beginning of the project. Although I enjoyed this skill, I didn't find it particularly applicable to my project in animation. I also acquired the skill of using gradient maps, which proved to be both valuable and enjoyable. I extensively employed gradient maps while working on storyline scenes and pictures throughout my project, and it became an essential skill I acquired. Additionally, I learnt the creation of glitch effects in the camera, finding it relatively easy yet achieving a pleasing end result. Even though I haven't mastered using these skills, I am still satisfied with the outcomes I achieved when utilizing it. Another technique I experimented with was PNG sequencing, although it didn't prove useful for my final piece, I still have done a bit further development and used it in the walk cycle GIF showcase.
During my FMP, I had multiple opportunities to create presentations for the mindset of the final piece and for my exhibition, the extra works of presentation allowed me to realize areas for improvement, such as errors in storylines, wrong emotions of the characters and more. While working on the presentation, I struggled a bit with the layouts and the lack of information at the beginning. However, with multiple research, references and reworks I did, I'm satisfied with the result of the presentation. The final presentation has an excellent layout, clear and easy-understanding information, which gives me the confidence to amaze my audiences.
Make Art Be Happy, being an individual animation project, and since the final non-restricted piece of the artwork of this course, it provided me with the opportunity to perceive any of my individual capabilities of creating an outstanding animation. This unique project has allowed me to get deeper into the world of animations in 10 weeks through self-exploration, experimentation and skill development. Since the project is non-topic restricted and non-group restricted, I’m able to explore any areas and to keep my progress easily with good time management. However, by working on animation individually, the amount of support will be restricted, due to different directions of art productions, and the lack of support and reviews. Overall, I’m really satisfied with the whole process of this final project, as the topic of the project is not restricted to anything, I was allowed to take good advantage of my creativity. Make Art Be Happy is surely a remarkable piece of artwork I have created, which allowed me to discover my potential in animation production. I am surely looking forward to taking part in some new challenges at University.

ANALYSIS
I think that my garment looks amazing on my model and it compliments her very well. I chose to do a test of both black and white background to see what best complimented and they both look really great. I had my model look grungy and also out of an editorial by doing lots of sit down poses which also portrays the travel on the subways in nyc which is portrayed really well through these photos. I think that these photos have turned out great. For her makeup I wanted that really deep blushed look so I went over the top and added a blue eye look which compliments her skin very well. I kept her hair very sophisticated and it looks good kept up away from her face to really show the makeup. If I was to re do these I would try more makeup looks a bit overall I love how this turned out.
In terms of the construction of my garment, I think that this turned out a lot better and I achieved more than I thought I would achieve over the first year, I have been able to create pattern pieces to my spec drawings and this has really improved my knowledge and understanding. Although this garment is not 100% the best, through this fmp I have learnt a lot and I am able to take them onto next year. I also think that the knowledge I had retained through the first units has really helped with the construction of my top.

Last Child in the Woods, by Richard Louv
Critical Analysis
The excerpt reflects on how children today have less direct contact with nature compared to previous generations, raising concerns about the impact on their well-being and environmental awareness.
Personal Viewpoint
While it's important to acknowledge the changing landscape, we should also recognize that not all children have had equal access to nature throughout history. Blaming technology alone overlooks its potential to promote environmental engagement. Technology can serve as a tool to foster environmental awareness and engagement when used thoughtfully.
Findings to Inform Project
How can I use technology to create an app that increases engagement with nature without further increasing digital usage?
What features should my app have which ensures limited screen time?

Major Project FMP - Tutorial - LO3 - LO4
I proactively scheduled another session with Ciaren to seek additional insights and opinions. During our conversation, I shared my feedback and outlined my plan. Together, we explored ideas that could enhance the creation of physical animations and interactive outcomes. I identified the importance of maintaining a list of bike parts for further analysis. However, a challenge arose as neither my friends nor I own a bike. Consequently, I'll need to explore alternative methods. While I have a toy bike for structural reference based on previous tests, I am considering options such as purchasing bike parts or using stock photos as references to initiate the development of my project.
Bike parts:
chain
wheel
brakes
handlebars
cogs
spokes
gears
pedals
frame
This will give me broader research and experimentation.
Afterward, we delved into the Pecha Kucha tutorial, which proved instrumental in organizing my thoughts on structuring the upcoming 12-image presentation.
For example,
1 context of the song
2 album analysis or the twists and turns on the song
3 narrative theory
4 split into the three parts of narrative in context
5 experiments with tactile objects

Fundamentals of Music Processing: Using Python and Jupyter Notebooks
Description: The textbook provides both profound technological knowledge and a comprehensive treatment of essential topics in music processing and music information retrieval (MIR). Including numerous examples, figures, and exercises, this book is suited for students, lecturers, and researchers working in audio engineering, signal processing, computer science, digital humanities, and musicology.
The book consists of eight chapters. The first two cover foundations of music representations and the Fourier transform—concepts used throughout the book. Each of the subsequent chapters starts with a general description of a concrete music processing task and then discusses—in a mathematically rigorous way—essential techniques and algorithms applicable to a wide range of analysis, classification, and retrieval problems. By mixing theory and practice, the book’s goal is to offer detailed technological insights and a deep understanding of music processing applications.
As a substantial extension, the textbook’s second edition introduces the FMP (fundamentals of music processing) notebooks, which provide additional audio-visual material and Python code examples that implement all computational approaches step by step. Using Jupyter notebooks and open-source web applications, the FMP notebooks yield an interactive framework that allows students to experiment with their music examples, explore the effect of parameter settings, and understand the computed results by suitable visualizations and sonifications. The FMP notebooks are available from the author’s institutional web page at the International Audio Laboratories Erlangen.

Okay so sourcing and supply !! I’ve not really put that much time into it tbh aghhhhh but it is difficult, I feel like im sort of on the right track tho, I feel as if I know more of what im doing now. Im hoping that when I really get started on it it wont feel so daunting and I can catch up, and im also just hoping that I can hand in way later for the formative eek. Its just so difficult !! It will be okay tho, and the FMP, like I feel as if im going to have to think of something really innovative and exciting to do research on, bc it feel like atm im just making it and its not particularly innovative, well at least I can have a think about that, hopefully I can get something done tonight, and tomorrow !! Lets have a look at my calendar ! At least tomorrow too ill have some time to get some work done, possibly like design cult or something, then maybe even like go to the sourcing tutorial eek!! That means tonight tho, I should get back, tan, wash hair, get outfit/ clothes ready for Saturday and Friday night !! Just hope I don’t fucking stink of fake tan !! I could do lashes and toenails too tbh !! Only thing with lashes tho is I hope they wont rip my own lashes out, I should be okay tbh as long as I just use the duo glue, and when im in bed ill get some more chrimbobs presents, then ill send my parents some stuff from Zara ect!! So will be epic need to concentrate now, I would love. Pole !! Maybe in the future !! I can. Dream, okay what my goal for today, so I would do like my pestle analysis, maybe I don’t have to find references for all of them, and I could Strat on my swots, so hard to concentrate, might pee then concentration time !! With my headphones so I don’t talk.

Task Outline
The type of brief you produce for this unit is likely to be an open brief, a user-centred brief, or a graphic authorship brief. Whichever type you choose you need to support your outcome with a separate research document. This needs to be a substantial publication that identifies all of the experiments that you undertake to engage with the problem; The process of problem solving that you go through (research, analysis, ideation, synthesis and realisation all need to be recorded); and the subsequent methodologies you develop which require critical appraisal.
If the outcome is user-centred it would be appropriate to test the outcome on a focus group – this takes time and needs to be built into your time plan.
Irrespective of the type of brief you choose you need to identify its audience. With this brief you will, if you wish, have opportunities to engage with external stakeholders. This could be an opportunity to work with other practices, designers or subject specialisms.
The importance of producing a ‘sustained focus’ and a ‘significant body of work’ delineates this unit from the other units consequently during the assessment process we will be looking very closely at this documentation.
You must evidence a body of work that represents a dedication to your studies and commitment to the duration of the unit.
