Hii! I just wanted to ask if you saw the trailer for domina season 2?
and from another anon (lots of classics fans in my inbox today!)
Have you seen the new trailer for season 2 of Domina? Season 2 will start airing in July!!! I feel like I’ve been waiting forever. I’m so psyched especially to see more of Antonia Minor (how funny will it be to see Octavia and Livia share grandchildren after that finale) and Iullus and Julia and maybe even Tiberius and Vipsennia. Although I am a bit sad because there’s a lot of speculation that this season will depict Agrippa’s death and Drusus’s death but interested to see where it’s all going anyway. My only complaint is the lack of Cleopatra Selene and Juba.
ZOOMS OVER TO WATCH IT aaaaahh i didn't even know they were making a season 2!! it's been so long i thought for sure it had been cancelled! this is so exciting! i am ready to see my beloved himbo and poor little meow meow (a rare man who can do both) iullus antonius onscreen again!!!!! what do you mean he's not the main character, to me he is. you don't know true joy until you've gotten to see your Obscure Historical Fav be adapted onscreen for the first time in cinematic history :') (more or less, he WAS in one shitty made-for-tv movie i watched once)
on the one hand i hate how dirty they did octavia and how they went for the tired old trope of antagonistic female in-laws (it's great that you want to lift up livia who's historically always been villainized, but you don't have to turn around and villainize octavia to do it!), but on the other hand, i love mess and i will be chomping away on popcorn watching The Real Housewives Of Ancient Rome come july. and yes i can't wait to see more of antonia minor now that she'll be older! and iullus and julia!!!!!!! but agreed very sad that cleopatra selene wasn't included - i can see why there wasn't space for her story in a show focused around livia (and god there were SO many kids in augustus and octavia's households, some inevitably need to be cut), which is why we someday need that younger generation to be the FOCAL point of a show rather than just side characters in their parents' stories.

REVIEW OF DOMINA
below the cut is my review for the 8 episode miniseries domina (2021)
i’ll be honest; i didn’t go in with a lot of expectations for this series because for some reason every series about ancient rome is sexualized to a point where it becomes overkill. I was only going to check because the historical livia drusilla was an absolute icon and i had no intention to gif it or even talk about it on my main blog. but it definitely exceeded my expectations and was very fun to watch.
the first two episodes have an entirely different cast then the rest of the series and they serve as a prelude to the rest of the series. to be completely honest, i was dead bored during the first two episodes and the cast was not exactly magnetic. the only thing it really did well was emphasizing Drusilla’s motivations and ambitions.
now everything takes a turn from episode 3 where we are introduced to the now grown up main cast and the story picks up and becomes so much more fascinating. make no mistake, the two episodes have very little resemblance to the rest of the series. kasia as livia is not only incredibly beautiful but is a force to be reckoned with throughout the series. the thing i love about the series is that it displays the depth of livia’s intelligence and capabilities without making it feel unnatural. they also do not make her out to be this perfect and flawless being incapable of faults; if anything they are emphasized to make her relatable.
the rest of the cast is equally stellar. augustus and agrippa have an amazing screen presence and their character development is truly well done. young tiberius and drusus are scene stealers and are written very sensibly giving us hints of what their future selves will look like. octavia is hilarious at times but she is too busy accompanying most spiteful person of the year who goes by the name scribonia, which can be quite too much at times. marcellus is one character who by all means has a characterization that is not truly meant to be a harmful archetype but somehow is very close to being so. antigone and taico are written so well that i genuinely have so much resect for the writer for giving those characters agency, intelligence and ambitions instead of just limiting them to dependable sidekicks. julia the elder needs to be given a special mention for she is such a strong presence in any scene and the actress that plays her really gives life to the character.
the series can be hard to really understand for those who are novices to ancient rome but it is nothing a simple wikipedia search cannot clarify. there are many things i love about the series; the comic trio of agrippa, livia and augustus, the individual relationships between livia and augustus and livia and agrippa, julia’s relationship with livia, livia’s fanclub of young aspirational girls, our badass healer/poisoner antigone, and finally the number of times we hear “fuck the senate”
so give it a try...i truly enjoyed the experience
