Three people escaped without major injuries after a hot air balloon they were in struck a power line and crashed along a Minnesota highway, police say.
The hot air balloon was attempting to land Wednesday, March 20, in Rochester when a gust of wind pushed it into the power line, according to the Rochester Police Department.
Video shared on social media shows sparks fly before the balloon becomes detached from the basket carrying three people.
“I was driving home on (U.S. Highway) 63 there and as soon as I saw the hot air balloon going in the air I was like, ‘Okay they’re gonna land in the field.’” Brady Ploenzke told KAAL. “I was like, ‘Okay it’s getting a little closer,’ then I saw a huge flash of light.”
The basket landed in the grass beside the highway as traffic stopped to help the people inside. The crash caused the basket to catch fire, leading to a smoky scene.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, police said. The balloon was later found a couple of miles away.
Two of the three people inside the basket suffered minor injuries, according to police.
Mike Lesmeister, the balloon’s pilot, told KSTP it was his first issue in 27 years as a hot air balloon operator.
The crash is being investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
Rochester is about a 90-mile drive southeast of Minneapolis.

The Firestarter
I've covered a lot about Bertha, but I haven't yet touched on this topic. No, I'm not avoiding it.
Trust me to declare with confidence that Bertha set off no fires.
Tumblr media
But it is important to note that the text supports it: Jane, our eyes to the story, does not see her do so. She's not present for the second fire. I've already brought the credibility of the innkeeper's story about the fire into question. And as for the first, well, the evidence is purely circumstantial. Jane wakes up, hears strange murmurs, thinks someone's touching her door from the outside, tries to sleep, is woken up again by that demonic laugh, hears the sound of footsteps running up to the third floor and the door to the third floor opening and closing. She gets up, opens her door, looks down the gallery, sees a candle on the floor, notices smoke coming out of Rochester's room, the door to which is ajar, smells something burning, rushes to his room, sees the fire, and quickly extinguishes it with the water from the pitcher.
The next day, Jane walks into Rochester's room where Leah is cleaning and Grace is sewing the curtain. Faking ignorance of last night's incident, Jane asks Grace what's going on, has anything happened. Grace's answer:
“Only master had been reading in his bed last night; he fell asleep with his candle lit, and the curtains got on fire; but, fortunately, he awoke before the bed-clothes or the wood-work caught, and contrived to quench the flames with the water in the ewer.”
Obviously that's not true, but the origin of the fire is plausible. We cannot establish which candle it was that started the fire. Jane doesn't have time to notice any candles in his room, understandably; when Grace gives her account, Jane doesn't immediately think "bullshit, there was no lighted candle in his room", so we can safely say she doesn't know.
Let's say Bertha enters her husband's room, the door of which was inexplicably unlocked/unbolted, without waking him up, and sets fire to his curtains. Okay. She did it. Then Bertha, that CUNNING woman, exits the room leaving the door ajar instead of closing it. She places the candle on floor of the gallery. And doesn't forget to laugh that very distinct laugh of hers right there, outside the room a witness, in the dead of the night when any noise carries ten times louder than during daylight.
Tumblr media
Why did she not shut the door?
Leaving the door open made the fire more likely to be discovered. Also more likely to spread, as opposed to if it was only contained to Rochester's bedroom. Had she escaped from Thornfield, she might have wanted to burn the whole motherfucker down, but she went back to her attic, so if she burned the whole motherfucker down, she'd have died in it too. So far she'd shown no signs of wanting to kill herself.
Why did she leave the candle on the floor? Just why??? Why did she not take it with her? Did she go back upstairs in the dark? Jane mentions the night was "drearily dark". And Bertha had to climb the stairs to get back to her room.
Maybe those red eyes of hers can see in the dark, yo.
Tumblr media
Though she had a candle when she came to Jane's room, two nights before the supposed wedding.
Charlotte, hon, your story is inconsistent.
So, I don't know *throws arms*. She might have done it or she might have not. Despite being a supporter of Bertha, I don't necessarily insist that she's innocent of the arson, though I started this post with it. I understand why she'd want to burn Rochester alive. I wish I could burn him alive too. She is guilty of stabbing her brother, I don't deny that. I gave theories on that. Speaking of the stabbing, I have to wonder why Bertha didn't just stab Edward. She was out of her cell, she could have gone to the kitchen and got the knife then. It's a lot less messier than starting fires. Sure, once it was discovered, she'd definitely be charged with murder (as opposed to the fire in the bedroom appearing to be accidental)--but what did she have to lose? It's probable they'd commit her to an institution, rather than execute her. And she might have felt that it couldn't have been worse than being at Thornfield. (Rochester claims it was better for her at Thornfield, but she herself might not have thought so, she might have had a grass-is-always-greener style of thinking and besides, she might have just wanted Rochester dead, never mind at what cost.)
Accidents are always possible, albeit not very dramatic. More probable than arson, for sure. This was the time of candles, fires in the fireplaces, lots of flammable materials around, and no health and safety guidelines.
Having both fires be accidents is a cop-out, but there are lots of possibilities to play with. For the purposes of writing a pro-Bertha fanfic, it doesn't matter. The writer doesn't even need to explain it. You can have two characters, neither a Thornfield inhabitant, discussing the event. Which is what's in the actual canon. It's just that nobody has thought of doubting the innkeeper's word. Nobody but me. As far as I know, at least. Will this help me find kindred spirits?
Given what we now know of Rochester's womanising ways, the door to his room being left ajar at night and the candle on the gallery floor may have a different explanation. And the fire could still have been an accident, like Grace described--he fell asleep forgetting to extinguish his own candle.
But, just as I did in the Grace Poole post, I have to wonder how it was possible that Bertha was able to set TWO fires. Measures should have been taken after the first time, ensuring it didn't happen again. After his secret was out, what stopped Rochester from hiring a second nurse, to ease Grace's workload?
And why was Grace cooking in Bertha's room? (Seriously, why???)
Some serious incompetence going on at Thornfield.

Family Dog Dies in Fire at Rochester Residence
Tumblr media
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) – The Rochester Fire Department responded to a residential fire Saturday afternoon in southwest Rochester that resulted in the death of the family dog.
Tumblr media
RFD was dispatched to a home in the 6100 block of Pointe Dr. around 1:45 p.m. to a report of a fire on the main floor of a residence, with a dog still possibly still inside.
Crews arrived to find smoke coming from the front door and immediately entered the home to put out the fire. Once more firefighters arrived at the scene, they began a primary search of the residence. The first arriving crew extinguished a fire in the kitchen, and then placed a fan in the front door to ventilate smoke and heat out of an open window.

While on the second floor of the residence, the primary search team located a dog and took the dog outside where firefighters began life-saving efforts. The efforts were unsuccessful.
Crews continued to check for other fires in the structure, but none were found.

RFD said there was significant smoke and fire damage in the kitchen, and some light damage throughout the residence. One person was checked by Mayo Clinic Ambulance for smoke inhalation.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
RFD also noted that they are saddened by the unfortunate passing of the residents’ pet dog and that the fire department carries life-saving equipment that is designed and used on animals including oxygen masks designed to fit cats and dogs. This equipment was deployed by firefighters in this instance.

April Sorensen
Rochester police were called about 12:30 p.m. April 17, 2007, to Sorensen’s home in the 4800 block of 22nd Avenue Northwest for a report of smoke coming from the home. A cable TV technician who was scheduled for a service call arrived to see a haze through the home’s storm door and he could hear the smoke alarm going off.
The technician called 911. Firefighters arrived and found Sorensen’s body on the bedroom floor after they extinguished the fire. Investigators believe it was set in an attempt to cover up her murder. The door to the bedroom had been closed, allowing the fire to burn hot enough to damage the contents of the room so that very little forensic evidence could be recovered.
Still, investigators collected hundreds of pieces of evidence from the home. Some of that evidence contained human DNA but there's been no match – yet. There was no witness to the crime and neighbors reported seeing nothing unusual that morning. Even so, investigators have been able to piece together what likely happened. There are signs that Sorensen was physically assaulted with an edged weapon -- possibly a knife of some sort -- but the weapon wasn’t found. An autopsy revealed Sorensen was strangled and stabbed to death. In 2017, Capt. John Sherwin said police had done a complete reanalysis of every piece of evidence that was taken from the crime scene. Sherwin was a patrol sergeant at the time of Sorensen’s murder and the first officer inside the house Sorensen shared with her husband.
Shortly after Sorensen’s murder, police worked with the FBI to create a likely profile of the suspect. Former police Capt. Brian Winters said in late 2007 that the attacker was probably a single male who could blend into residential neighborhoods easily without raising suspicion. Winters said evidence indicated the offender was comfortable being in a stranger's home uninvited, meaning he likely had broken into or stolen property from other homes.
Both the cable TV technician who called in the fire and Sorensen’s husband have been cleared of any involvement in the crime.

• Franz von Werra (Swiss Luftwaffe Ace)
Franz Xaver Baron von Werra was a German World War II fighter pilot and flying ace who famously was shot down over Britain and made several escape attempts from Allied POW camps.
Franz Baron von Werra was born on July 13th, 1914, to impoverished Swiss parents in Leuk, a town in the Swiss canton of Valais. The title of Freiherr (equal to Baron) came from his biological father, Leo Freiherr von Werra, who after bankruptcy, faced deep economic hardship. Because his relatives were legally obliged to look after the Baron's wife and six children, his cousin Rosalie von Werra persuaded her childless friend Louise Carl von Haber to permit the Baron's youngest, Franz and his sister, to enjoy the benefits of wealth and education. Werra joined the Luftwaffe in 1936 and was commissioned a Leutnant in 1938. At the beginning of the Second World War he was serving with Jagdgeschwader 3 in the French campaign. He became adjutant of II Gruppe, JG 3 and was described as engaging in boisterous 'playboy' behavior. He was once pictured in the press with his pet lion Simba, which he kept at the aerodrome as the unit mascot.
Werra scored his first four victories in May 1940, during the Battle of France. Downing a Hawker Hurricane on May 20th, two days later he claimed two Breguet 690 bombers and a Potez 630 near Cambrai. In a sortie on August 25th, during the Battle of Britain, he claimed a Spitfire west of Rochester, and three Hurricanes, as well as five destroyed on the ground for a total of nine RAF planes eliminated. The details of the actions are unknown, as the incident has not been found in British records. On September 5th, 1940, Werra's Bf 109E-4 was shot down over Winchet Hill, Kent. It is unclear who was responsible for this victory, which was originally credited to Pilot Officer Gerald "Stapme" Stapleton of No. 603 Squadron RAF. However, the Australian ace Flight Lieutenant Paterson Hughes was posthumously given half of the credit, awarding him a bar to his DFC. Werra crash-landed his Bf 109E-4 in a field on Loves Farm and was captured by the unarmed cook of a nearby army unit. Werra was initially held in Maidstone barracks by the Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment, from which he attempted his first escape.
He had been put to work digging and was guarded by RMP Private Denis Rickwood, who had to face Werra down with a small truncheon, while Werra was armed with a pick axe. He was interrogated for eighteen days at the London District Prisoner of War "cage" Trent Park, an country house in Hertfordshire. Eventually, Werra was sent on to POW Camp No.1, at Grizedale Hall in the Furness Fells area of pre-1974 Lancashire, between Windermere and Coniston Water. On October 7th, he tried to escape for the second time, during a daytime walk outside the camp. At a regular stop, while a fruit cart provided a lucky diversion and other German prisoners covered for him, von Werra slipped over a dry-stone wall into a field. The guards alerted the local farmers and the Home Guard. On the evening of October 10th, at around 11:00pm, two Home Guard soldiers found him sheltering from the rain in a hoggarth (a type of small stone hut used for storing sheep fodder that is common in the area). On being removed from the hut he knocked the lamp to the ground, extinguishing the light, then he quickly escaped and disappeared into the night. On October 12th, he was spotted climbing a fell. The area was surrounded, and Werra was eventually found, almost totally immersed in a muddy depression in the ground. He was sentenced to 21 days of solitary confinement and on November 3rd was transferred to Camp No. 13 in Swanwick, Derbyshire, also known as the Hayes camp.
In Camp No. 13, Werra joined a group calling itself Swanwick Tiefbau A.G. (Swanwick Excavations, Inc.), which was digging an escape tunnel. The tunnel can still be seen at the Hayes Conference Centre. On December 17th, 1940, after a month's digging, it was complete. The camp had forgers who equipped the escape group with money and fake identity papers. On December 20th, Werra and four others slipped out of the tunnel under the cover of anti-aircraft fire and the singing of the camp choir. The others were recaptured quickly, leaving Werra to proceed alone. He had taken along his flying suit and decided to masquerade as Captain van Lott, a Dutch Royal Netherlands Air Force pilot. He told a friendly locomotive driver that he was a downed bomber pilot trying to reach his unit, and asked to be taken to the nearest RAF base. At Codnor Park railway station, a local clerk became suspicious, but eventually agreed to arrange his transportation to the aerodrome at RAF Hucknall, near Nottingham. The police also questioned him, but Werra convinced them he was harmless. At Hucknall, a Squadron Leader Boniface asked for his credentials, and Werra claimed to be based at Dyce near Aberdeen. While Boniface went to check this story, Werra excused himself and ran to the nearest hangar, trying to tell a mechanic that he was cleared for a test flight. Boniface arrived in time to arrest him at gunpoint, as he sat in the cockpit, trying to learn the controls. Werra was sent back to the Hayes camp under armed guard.
In January 1941, Werra was sent with many other German prisoners to Canada on the Duchess of York, in a convoy departing Greenock on January 10th, 1941, guarded by HMS Ramillies among others. His group was to be taken to a camp on the north shore of Lake Superior, Ontario, so Werra began to plan his escape to the United States, which was still neutral at the time. On January 21st, while on a prison train that had departed Montreal, he jumped out of a window, again with the help of other prisoners, and ended up near Smith's Falls, Ontario, 30 miles from the St. Lawrence River. Seven other prisoners tried to escape from the same train, but were soon recaptured. Werra's absence was not noticed until the next afternoon. After crossing the frozen St. Lawrence River, Werra made his way to Ogdensburg, New York, arriving several months before the US entered the war, and turned himself over to the police. The immigration authorities charged him with entering the country illegally, so Werra contacted the local German consul, who paid his bail. Thus, he came to the attention of the press and told them a very embellished version of his story. While the U.S. and Canadian authorities were negotiating his extradition, the German vice-consul helped him over the border to Mexico. Werra proceeded in stages to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Barcelona, Spain and Rome, Italy. He finally arrived back in Germany on April 18th, 1941.
On his return to Germany Werra became a hero. Adolf Hitler awarded him the Knights Cross of the Iron Cross. Werra was assigned the task of improving German techniques for interrogating captured pilots, based on his experiences with the British system. Werra reported to the German High Command on how he had been treated as a POW, and this caused an improvement in the treatment of Allied POWs in Germany. He wrote a book about his experiences titled Meine Flucht aus England (My Escape from England), although it remained unpublished. Werra returned to active service with the Luftwaffe and was initially deployed to the Russian front as Gruppenkommandeur of I./JG 53. He scored 13 more aerial victories during July 1941, raising his overall confirmed total to 21. In early August 1941, I./JG 53 withdrew to Germany to re-equip with the new Bf 109F-4, after which it moved to Katwijk in the Netherlands. On October 25th, 1941 Werra took off in Bf 109F-4 Number 7285 on a practice flight. His aircraft suffered engine failure and crashed into the sea north of Vlissingen. Werra was presumed killed, though his body was never found.

As of Wednesday morning, the remains of 33 victims who were aboard the #Conception have been recovered. A search is underway for the remaining body, according to @USCG officials.
Conception Boat Fire: Here's The Latest On The Tragedy Off Santa Cruz Island
BY LAIST Staff | Published September 3, 2019 3:44 PM | LAIST | Posted September 4, 2019 7:04 PM ET |
Recovery efforts are continuing near Santa Cruz Island after a dive boat named Conception caught fire and sank early Monday with 34 people aboard.
As of Wednesday morning, the remains of 33 victims have been recovered and a search is underway for the remaining body, according to U.S. Coast Guard officials.
The intense fire aboard the ship spread rapidly and authorities believe 33 passengers and one crew member were trapped in their sleeping quarters on the lower deck. Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown said Tuesday it appeared a stairwell and escape hatch were both blocked by fire.
Here's what else we know so far.
FROM SEARCH TO RECOVERY
At 9:40 a.m. Tuesday, after nearly 24 hours on the scene, the U.S. Coast Guard suspended the search for survivors, USCG Captain Monica Rochester said. Authorities are now working on a plan to safely salvage the vessel and recover the 14 remaining victims.
Four to six additional bodies were located in the wreckage Monday night, but the sunken ship is currently inverted upside down on the sea floor, creating a hazardous situation for divers. Authorities will attempt to stabilize the boat in an effort to search the wreckage for the additional victims and recover their bodies, according to Sheriff Brown.
"We want to make sure that this process is done safely and methodically," he said.
Brown also said the five surviving crew members gave written statements Monday and would be interviewed Tuesday.
WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE VICTIMS
The sheriff's department has a list of passengers from the Conception and have been working to notify the victims' families. Sheriff Brown said four families have yet to be reached Tuesday. The majority of the passengers appear to be from the Bay Area, he added.
Brown said many, if not all of the victims, were badly burned in the fire, meaning the remains will have to be identified through DNA testing. Authorities are in the process of collecting DNA samples from family members and will create profiles based on those samples.
A special team from the U.S. Department of Justice is assisting local officials with a rapid DNA analysis tool to speed up the identification process, Brown said, but it's unclear how long that process will take.
The Santa Barbara County Coroner is handling the remains with assistance from the Los Angeles County coroner's office. No autopsies have been performed as of Tuesday morning, officials said.
A family assistance center was established at Earl Warren Showgrounds at 3400 Calle Real in Santa Barbara to provide family and friends of victims information, support, mental health counseling, and other resources.
A pair of vigils are scheduled Thursday in honor of the victims: one at 6 p.m. at the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium and another at 7 p.m. at the Deep Blue Scuba Center on the Belmont Pier in Long Beach.
EARLY MORNING FIRE
Conception's 33 passengers and 6 crew members were on a three-day excursion in the Channel Islands. Early Monday morning, the vessel was anchored off Platts Harbor on the north side of Santa Cruz Island, a popular Southern California dive site located about 24 miles off the Santa Barbara coast.
A mayday call sent at about 3:15 a.m. Monday reported a raging fire on the vessel. Five crew members, including the captain, were awake and on the bridge at the time of the incident, then jumped overboard, authorities said. The passengers were below deck asleep when the blaze broke out.
The five crew members were rescued by a good Samaritan boat anchored nearby. A sixth crew member did not make it off the ship, authorities said.
"This is probably the worst-case scenario you could possibly have," Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown told reporters Monday, noting the combination of a fire breaking out on a boat in a remote location in the middle of the night.
Two boats from the Ventura County Fire Department were the first on scene and found the wooden vessel completely engulfed in flames. U.S. Coast Guard boats also responded and worked to douse the fire.
But at about 7:20 a.m., the boat sank in about 60 feet of water. Four bodies were recovered shortly after the vessel went down, described only as two adult men and two adult women.
Search and rescue teams responded with helicopters, boats and divers and located another four bodies on the ocean floor Monday. Concerns over the tide and the stability of the sunken boat hampered recovery efforts that afternoon, but as crews worked into the night, 16 more bodies were recovered and brought to shore.
Authorities are investigating where the fire started and what caused it, but could not confirm media reports of an explosion on the ship.
"There's no indication at this point in the investigation that there was an explosion that preceded this fire or this event," Brown told reporters Tuesday.
The National Transportation Safety Board has dispatched a team to investigate the incident.
WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE FEDERAL INVESTIGATION
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the fire and plans to release a preliminary report within 10 days, NTSB board member Jennifer Homendy said at a Tuesday afternoon press conference, though a final report usually takes between 12 and 24 months. The Coast Guard will also be conducting their own investigation.
Vehicles of the size of the Conception aren't required to have a black box on board, according to NTSB Investigator-In-Charge Adam Tucker, and they have not received any indication that the ship had installed one voluntarily.
The NTSB plans to be on scene for 7 to 10 days collecting evidence, but will not be determining the cause of the fire while on scene, Homendy said. They do plan to provide factual information ahead of their report as it becomes available. She also noted that they have in the past provided urgent safety recommendations in the middle of an investigation and that they won't wait for the investigation to end in order to do that.
The NTSB is asking the public for their assistance, seeking photos, videos, and any other information that people believe will help the safety investigation. Anyone with that information can email them at [email protected].
The NTSB has started to develop a list of people they'd like to interview. Homendy said they would like to speak with surviving crew members, the companies that were involved, first responders, the Coast Guard, and others. They plan to examine the vessel itself, the crew, and the conditions they were operating in. That includes if crew members had undergone firefighter training and what emergency supplies were on board, such as life vests, fire extinguishers, and life boats.
Homendy said she was 100 percent confident that investigators will determine the cause of the fire, why it occurred, how it occurred, and what it will take to prevent it from happening again.
WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE CONCEPTION
The Conception was owned and operated by Truth Aquatics, a Santa Barbara-based charter company that provided a variety of ocean excursions, including whale watching, lobster diving and fishing.
The 79-foot ship was built in Long Beach and first launched in 1981, according to Truth Aquatics website. The company operates two other boats, Truth and Vision.
The vessel has three decks, authorities explained Tuesday: the lower deck is the passenger sleeping quarters, the middle deck contains the galley, or kitchen, and the top deck houses the crew quarters and the ship's bridge.
The Conception was on a three-day Labor Day weekend trip to allow divers a "unique opportunity to explore the pinnacles of San Miguel Island," according to an online trip listing. It was scheduled to have left Santa Barbara at 4 a.m. Saturday and return Monday afternoon, Brown said.
The U.S. Coast Guard inspects boats annually and the Conception was "fully compliant" in its most recent inspection, according to Captain Rochester. The vessel was equipped with smoke detectors, along with fixed and portable firefighting systems, per federal regulations. The boat specifications also say it was equipped with rafts and life jackets for 110 passengers.
Several people, including friends of former crew members and frequent passengers on the Conception told LAist that the company had a strong safety record and a top-notch crew.

There’s no evidence of terrorism in the fiery New Year’s Day crash that saw the driver of an SUV stashed with gas canisters speed toward pedestrians and collide with a car, killing two people and injuring several more after a concert in Rochester, New York, police said.
The suspect, identified as Michael Avery, 35, of the Syracuse area, died Monday night from injuries sustained in the crash, officials said.
Rochester Police Chief David M. Smith said in an update Tuesday that Avery's motive is not clear and urged the public to come forward with information.
However, authorities have spoken with Avery's family and they believed he “may have been suffering from possible undiagnosed mental health issues,” Smith said.
"We have not recovered any information that his actions were motivated by any form of political or social biases," he added, noting it is believed Avery acted alone.
The crash happened shortly before 1 a.m. as police officers were directing traffic after a concert by the band "moe" at the Kodak Center theater complex, Rochester police previously said.
At 12:52 a.m., Avery drove the Ford Expedition on West Ridge Road toward where police officers were stopping traffic to allow pedestrians to cross.
“At this time, Avery sped up, crossed into the oncoming lane of traffic and appears to have intentionally been driving towards the pedestrian crossing,” Smith said.
That’s when he crashed into the Outlander, sending both vehicles “through a group of pedestrians that were in the crosswalk,” police said in a statement. The two passengers in the Outlander were killed and the driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.
The collision caused an explosion and a large blaze that took the fire department more than an hour to extinguish.
Once the flames were doused, firefighters “located at least a dozen gasoline canisters in and around” the Expedition, the police statement said. That prompted police to bring in an arson team and alert the FBI, police said.
The FBI Buffalo Field Office confirmed in a statement that the agency is assisting the Rochester Police Department in the investigation.
Police initially said three pedestrians were struck and hospitalized. That number rose to nine pedestrians, Smith said Tuesday, noting one pedestrian suffered life-altering injuries, and the rest should make full recoveries.
He added that Avery had traveled to Rochester in his personal vehicle on or about Dec. 27 and checked into the WoodSpring Suites in Greece, a suburb of Rochester.

A third of women interviewed said that they had been sexually harassed in the past year. Donald Trump, meanwhile, is visiting Kenosha, Wisconsin over the objections of the city’s mayor and the state governor. The city has become a flashpoint in the discussions about race, policing and justice in America after the police shooting of Jacob Blake and the subsequent slaying of two protesters by a teenage militia member.
2: Sarah Huckabee Sanders’s tell-all book reveals that Donald Trump joked she should ‘take one for the team’ after North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un winked at her during a 2018 summit. Which is fucked up. But still not quite as fucked up as my last workplace.

5: New York’s Attorney General, Letitia James, announces a grand jury investigation into the death of Daniel Prude, a 41-year-old black man who died during an encounter with Rochester police in March. Prude’s family released police body-cam footage earlier this week that undermined police claims that Prude died of an overdose. Videos shows the police handcuffing the naked Prude - who was suffering a psychotic episode after ingesting PCP - and placing a spit hood over his head. An officer knelt on his back, while another pressed his head to the pavement using both hands. “You’re trying to kill me”, Prude says. Journalists will later report that Rochester’s police department tried to suppress the release of the video, fearing it would incite violent blow-back in the wake of the George Floyd protests. The protests begin almost immediately - demonstrators are met with riot police and pepper spray. They also face a growing animosity from right-wing and pro-Trump counter-protesters - two cars careened into a crowd of protesters, early this morning, knocking them down.
