Of bows and bonds – Denning in Askr (Part 4)
With Limstella in the game now, I thought to continue my silly AU with Denning and Halloween!Grima, but then I realized that I hadn’t even posted part 4 yet. Looks like I started this when Pent got into the game.
Another little Askran village had just gotten saved from bandits, but that didn’t mean anything to Denning. Neither the people saved, nor the resources preserved and not even a task executed flawlessly, because the Morph hadn’t gotten put to that task by a legitimate authority.
As for Denning’s fighting companions, Grima was disgusted at the teeming, scurrying vermin otherwise known as “farmers”, almost as disgusted as she was by her own toddling after Nergal’s “mailman”. Felix and Sylvain were satisfied with their good deed, but Felix didn’t want to get praised as a knight, while Sylvain craved praise in general, just not for his crest-granted combat prowess. So basically the whole team was grumpy now and these four weren’t even the most messed up team in The Summoner’s army. In fact, the man considered this particular squad as something akin to a wholesome double date.
Lord Pent was just now addressing the victorious heroes. Denning listened with half an ear. Something about trust through bonds… Pent now faced the Morph directly. Denning had baited out the bandit mages with his budget Guard Bow Plus. The erstwhile enemy had proven a dependable ally in battle.
“Regardless our origins…” Pent started, only to get interrupted before Pent had fully decided on the exact words he wanted to direct at the Morph.
“Regardless?” Denning parroted the mage-general,. “So you don’t even care anymore that we are the Summoner’s battle slaves? Neither of us has a stake in this… or business with the other.”
The Morph currently had no orders to either confront or befriend Lord Pent, not even to pass him a note, and neither was the mage general an obstacle to any order Denning might have received. Therefore by all means that man shouldn’t even register to the Morph. Yet here Pent stood, all chummy-chatty, as if them both having gotten magically enslaved by The Summoner equaled receiving orders by a lawful authority. Denning didn’t feel like a “hero”, as the Summoner’s collection was called in Askr. If anything, he was property stolen from Lord Nergal.
“I reckon we’re done here, General, so if you’d excuse me now? I need to consult the most powerful commander in Askr, my real master.”
With these words the archer turned around and walked towards a cart track that led out of the forest. He’d very nearly had bumped into the Fell Dragon.
“I’m right here!” Grima exclaimed, apparently very pleased with herself just for existing. But when one was the result of a major scientific breakthrough in addition to having the blood of the Earth- and the Divine dragons, one probably had all the reason to. Denning certainly enjoyed seeing Grima being full of herself like this. It served as a small reminder that in tiny aspects the world was still as it should be.
With a smile Denning fell into stride with Grima.
“Would you come see Sonia with me?” he asked.
There was a noticeable pause, as if Grima had gotten caught by surprise, then she growled:
“Is the Fell Dragon a joke to you?! It used to be “Oh, I hardly dare approach Your Awesomeness, but you’d make such sweet couple with our little Fire Drake!” And now I’m – what exactly? Your moral support when go see your sergeant?!”
There was only truth in the statement, therefore the Morph nodded.
“Of all the elite Morphs, those of us with individual names, I am the youngest, and my seniors can be quite intimidating. And Sonia ranks even higher, being a human. I’d function a lot better if I had you by my side when I have to face her.”
Grima merely sighed. There was no use beating a dead horse, so she tagged along to see how this would play out.
As the duo approached the newly arrived blue tome wielder, the Morph Sonia, Grima thought she knew why her companion was so eager to de-brief with her: “Oh, I see! Two big and barely covered arguments for the sergeant. Mammals are so predictable…”
“And unlike someone I could name, she doesn’t eat mice”, Denning replied. “Bonus!”
However, Sonia refused to discuss anything with the failure that had dared to approach her. From Grima’s point of view, “imperfect” seemed to be the default this woman categorized people other than herself, it was nothing specifically relating to Denning, and Grima herself had called him worse things on occasion. But the young fool of a Morph let himself get shoved out of the way and then remained standing pressed against the corridor’s wall, wearing a baffled expression.
Eventually Denning spoke up: “I did as told… how’s that failing? Sure, the Ositians captured me, but the message got delivered. Wouldn’t even have mattered even if they’d killed me, because… the message… was… delivered! Sonia can ask Eliwood and he’ll confirm! Several Eliwoods, in fact.”
Grima’s eyes were still on Sonia, who hadn’t walked far after the initial rush to get out of the company of a lowly messenger and a Divine Earth Dragon wearing fluffy werewolf ears, mittens and a cute little tail.
“How exactly are you two related again?” she asked right into Denning’s tirade.
“We aren’t. I’m a Morph, she’s human.”
“You have the same pale skin, dark hair and yellow eyes.”
“That’s how all Morphs look”, Denning explained. “We were probably created in Sonia’s image.”
“I wonder in how many ways you can be in denial, but then again, Sonia is, too, so it’s probably a Morph thing.”
The Fell Dragon shrugged, what made her costume’s ears wiggle in an adorable way.
“Anyway, I think I understand Robin better now”, Grima mused aloud. “The thing she was always babbling about, before I consumed her. How the bonds one forges with comrades make all the individual pieces stronger…”
“Nonononono!” a female voice echoed through the hallway. “That’s merging with another copy of yourself! Forging Bonds is for tickets, that in turn call new heroes to Askr. But don’t fret if it sounds a bit overwhelming! You’ll have that memorized in no time!”
With these words Princess Sharena stepped between the Fell Dragon, the Morph and Sonia. She looked from one to the other, as if she was considering all of them a friendship group, and swang her lance around as playfully as her long ponytail. As a warrior, Sharena’s skill was so far above that of even elite soldiers and knights of her world, as it was below that of The Summoner’s battle slaves. But instead of letting that take her down in the presence of all the heroes, Sharena had retained a bubbly cheerfulness that not even the presence of less silly dressed iterations of the Fell Dragon could quench.
“See, Sonia?” the Princess addressed the newcomer to Askr. “Even those who are here for some time already still mix up the terms, so don’t feel bad if you do not get them memorized immediately.”
“Come again?!” Sonia flared up. “I’d never…”
“We’re all doing our best here, you’ll fit right in!” Sharena chirped.
Momentarily taken aback, Sonia was unable to defend against the Princess locking arms with her. Then Sharena walked, no, skipped, down the hallway with her “new friend”.
“Tickets, orbs and grails all summon more heroes that we can then be friends with”, Sharena chatted away. “Isn’t that exciting?”
Denning watched the Princess march Sonia off, oddly satisfied at the woman’s panicked expression at realizing that she was at the mercy of a blonde Nino now. Now and then the mage turned her head around, as if pleading for help, but with no explicit order directed his way, Denning just remained idle.
“Gaining enjoyment from the sight of your Commander in distress, Denning? I didn’t know you could be that petty”, Grima commented. “I like it!”
She drew Denning closer, first to look him into the eyes, but then it seemed more important that their lips lined up.
“I like YOU…”
Denning moved his head to the side a little.
“Promise me”, he panted, “promise me that all the worlds that heroes were summoned from will burn! Or even better, DINE on them! Gobble up Bantu… Eldigan… Jorge… Lucius… Raven… Seth… Haar… Naesala… Reyson… Virion… Masked Marth… Mustafa… Corrin… other Corrin… Kronya… all The Summoner’s Plus Tens!”
“The Fell Dragon doesn’t do Good Deeds!” Grima growled, but Denning drew her closer, holding fast in a mix of not letting go of prey and clinging to a lifeline. Their lips met, drowning out Denning’s recitation of people whose deaths might hurt his nemesis, The Summoner.
“Who’d thought it would take that much to make you STOP talking”, the Fell Dragon said with a grin.
Denning remained silent. Until very recently his understanding of ownership had encompassed himself being a creation of Lord Nergal and various equipment given to him for the duration of a mission. He’d also had had that vague concept of his master wanting to open the Dragon Gate, and that meeting Lady Grima, a powerful dragon, might please Lord Nergal. But now a part of him that wasn’t the Quintessence dreaded the thought of parting with the Fell Dragon, even for Nergal’s… for LORD Nergal’s benefit.
A single thought cruised through the Morph’s mind, a mutation of the concept of possession that now put the formerly owned as the owner:
MINE.
But if Grima was his, and he was still Nergal’s, then everything was still well, right?
“Ah, there’s your smile again”, Grima commented. “For a moment I got real worried.”
“No need to. All is well. Want me to catch a mouse for you now?”
“You, my friend, know how to talk to a woman! Let’s go!”

After seeing Candace added to the game, I think FEH should add more chapter bosses to its roster. Give me Batta the Beast with a disproportionately elaborate PRF weapon. Give me fully-voiced Denning.
CANDACE IS IN FEH NOW!

The morphs are humans, full stop: cliffnotes edition
ok I said I wanted to write a full mini-essay on this but I need to get this out of my system NOW and I don’t have time for even a half-assed analysis, so here’s a...quarter...assed....here’s some bullet points:
BASIC PREMISE: Nergal is an abusive parent/guardian who controls the morphs by making them feel powerless and/or gaslighting them.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE HUMAN?: In this case, have full autonomy and regular human emotions. I think all the named morphs shown apply but I’ll get into it.
WAIT DOES THAT MEAN NERGAL’S GOD??: No, Nergal’s a Bad Parent. I know there’re a bunch of nameless morphs that get mowed down as fodder but this is obvs not a 1:1 allegory. Case and point, you mow down endless nameless morphs the same way you reap human bandits and frankly enemy soldiers in other FE games, or, like, other maps in this game. We’re all clear that we’re smart enough to play the game and go ahead and defeat the nameless enemies knowing that we’re not equivocating them with hypothetical real world human adversaries, yes? good. So yeah Nergal’s basically the bad dad to all the named morphs. Moving on.
Ephidel: So I have the least to say about this dipstick, but yeah, he’s just a sadist from all evidence. Takes pleasure in other’s suffering. He’s the simplest one, which is why we meet him first. Nergal keeps him around because he follows orders easily and doesn’t cause trouble. Also easy to dismiss in this thoughtdump. NEXT.
Boss morphs: I had a whole section on this and it actually got so dark that I decided to cut it. Basically any implications of beings who smile when they die is Not Good, and “they are zombies” is the best case scenario.
Denning: I’m ranking this on level of pathos, and imo while Ephidel ranks up there with any bandit boss that spits at you and tells you you’ll never win even as he dies, Denning is more sympathetic than that. Yes. Denning. And I think that’s on purpose. I think this was a deliberate move to show us a morph who was unable to express personality. And yet, when they die, the way the message fades out...I mean think about it. Nergal sent a living being to serve the purpose of like, a bot in your dms. They can’t say anything other than their predetermined message, and they can’t emote that we can see. I definitely think this is a commentary on Nergal’s attitude towards life, and not meant as a statement of “morphs feel nothing by default.”
Kishuna: Explicitly described as being very sad. And then, we see how Nergal treats them: all put-downs, all the time. There is a sense both that they feel like they are inadequate as a person, and that they feel earning Nergal’s favor will give them purpose, which is why they still work for him. Kishuna is explicitly here to make you realize that morphs feel things.
Sonia: Do I. Do I even need to tell you that Sonia feels emotions? Do I even need to describe her constant existential dread? The reason she shit-talks Limstella is that she knows she’s a morph, but, like Limstella, she’s been convinced (by Nergal, duh) that human lives are worth more than morph lives, so she keeps calling herself a human, and at the very least has convinced herself that as long as she has Nergal’s approval, she’s worth as much as a human. And I can get into all the icky implications of Nergal forcing her both into a relationship with a human man and to be a mother to a human child, but. I’ll save that for later. Yes, she’s an unequivocal villain. I think that is part of her personality. But she has a personality, part of it involves ruthlessness and a willingness to utilize other’s suffering for her own gain, and part of it is the constant terror that if she doesn’t prove herself worthy, she will be killed, or used as a tool until she is killed. It is both.
Limstella: ...so. well. I said I didn’t wanna write too much but I’ve already written a bit. Short story: taking all that into account...Limstella the most powerful and most loyal of Nergal’s minions. So they get constant assurance that they are fulfilling their purpose. That’s...pretty damn human, I think. That they would never challenge their position because they constantly get overwhelming validation for their actions. *sigh* I want to go into this more later, but...yeah that’s why their death quote fucks me up so much. They’re sad to die, but so is anyone else who’s told to die for a “great cause.” And uh. Their story is the most moving tragic tale in all of FE for me? Not that it’s an objective competition, it’s just...idk. Their story moved me. I wish it could have ended differently.
OK WELL that’s out of my system now. That’s...777 words, yeesh. I could probably write a 2500 word scree on this no problem, and that’s even before starting to do research and site real-world psychology.
Anyway, I’d love to hear other’s thoughts! To me all of this seemed like obvious authorial intent, but it was never explicitly spelled out, so I’m sure lots of people have different reads!

What was Leopardstar and Carpwhisker’s relationship like?
You know how in Fire Emblem Awakening how there's that side character whose entire existence is dedicated to a running joke that he's the biggest person in the room... but no one sees him, ever? To the point where they even end up thinking an extra goblet at dinner must belong to a ghost?
Face obscured by Chrom's knee on the box art, Mike Wazowski magazine style?
Carpwhisker.
I'm GUTTING Leopardstar's Haggis. It is in the bottom 5 WC entries for me. Leopardstar's childhood bullying was cheap and brainless. How fucking dare they, actually?
How dare they take their ONE confident, intimidating female character, DEFINED by how she was beloved in RiverClan and by her apprentice generation, had no romance, and wasn't a mother figure, and fuck up ALL THREE THINGS???
So. Anyway.
If anyone gets bullied it's Carpwhisker, still by Skyheart.
Brightsky didn't die; she became a kittypet. There were four kits.
Carp, Oat, Leopard, Water.
Mudfur took Carp and Leopard home, due to their resemblance to their famous ancestor, Volestar.
If Mudfur knew what Leopardstar would become... he would have left her there, with her mother. He regrets bringing her back to RiverClan
He feels he should have known better. He became a Cleric shortly after returning because he came to believe that the constant fighting was wrong, and yet...
What did he expect?
Carpwhisker is a nervous wreck who can't stand up for herself despite being as big as a badger, and Leopardstar eventually booked herself a rock appointment
I feel like at some point, Carpwhisker learned the secret about Brightsky... but keeps it to herself.
She can't imagine Leopardstar taking it well, "and um, she's..." (Carpwhisker grasps for words not wanting to outright say she's terrified of her) "...she's a wee bit intense about bad news."
You know that one post about the kid who got severely bullied in school, the teacher put on Dumbo, and they watched every single one of their bullies cheer for the underdog? All the bullies think they're Dumbo.
That's poor Carp. I feel like she used to really like Aftergatherings until Leopardstar told her about the reputation of those events, and that attending them was making Carp look disloyal.
People often take credit for her achievements. She was the one who made the Bonehill practical-- it's not solid bone, it's a mud facade with a layer of bone around it. Tigerstar said it was TigerClan's achievement, and his by proxy.
When Carpwhisker was struggling for breath to correct him, Leopardstar gave her a sideways glance and killed the thought.
So, Carp's relationship with Leopardstar is not great. But Carp defends her, and loves her, and insist she knows best.
Leopardstar is a better friend of Skyheart than she is a sister of Carp. Leopard's beloved by that whole group, and a natural leader from a young age.
I think when Leopardstar dies, Carp is distraught by it. Inconsolable, and it's really hard to tell her in that moment that it sounds like she's a lot better off without her.
She'd probably end up hanging out with Mothwing a lot, seeking spiritual advice. Moth just gives her normal, mortal, nonspiritual advice, but Carpwhisker thinks it's divine.
After all... they both did just lose very toxic siblings that they still loved very much, and are kinda working through that.
In terms of politics, Carpwhisker is a weak-traditionalist. Really, she just goes along with what's popular at the moment, and doesn't make waves. She's conflict-avoidant, and just tries to make others happy with her hard work.
Most of all she just wants peace, really. What if there were no problems forever and everyone was just nice and well-fed and we all took a big nap in this warm den I made. What then.
SO all that to say... She loved Leopardstar. Leopardstar was awful to her. "We're sisters! It's just like that!" (It Is Not Like That.) She was hidden in her shadow. She thought the shadow was normal. She's destroyed when her sister dies. She can only begin to recover once she's gone.

Little Melody ||| Bowser x Reader
King Bowser struggles with a certain part of a composition when playing on his piano. You, his captive, chime in with a chord suggestion that ends up working.
Tumblr media
———————————————
Pairing: Bowser x Gender Neutral ! Reader
Relationship: Platonic
Tone: Gen
Word Count: 2.8k
Bowser Masterlist
———————————————
Being held captive for ransom was certainly an experience, especially when the person kidnapping you was most definitely not penurious.
From the towering doors edged with polished silver - the surface of which was decorated with engravings depicting bones and beasts and fire - to the cascading walls of glowing lava that had to be suspended using tedious magic, the castle you were taken into was truly quite fascinating. The architecture was different from your home, making you feel like a helpless little mouse trapped in a giant's den instead of a spark of musical might that kept you alive. Everything was plus sized. The ceilings reached too high. The corridors were too long. But there was less fear behind the anxiety blooming in your chest and more so a sense of wonder. This place was different, inspiring almost.
And, if the outward appearance wasn't enough to settle that, the stark disparity between court ethics made the slight culture shock that more obvious. There were no ladies in elegant garb wandering in search of rich lords and famous musicians. The castle staff was kept to a minimum of a few Shy Guys dusting random corners instead of bustling maids and palace servants. There were no princes or princesses causing immediate havok amongst the stationed guards. The court was quiet. Too quiet.
It was a silence that did not falter even as you were led towards the throne room during your first few days there. You could remember the sound of your dark chains as they clanged against one another, their heavy alloy creating minimal discomfort, surprisingly not irritating the skin of your wrists at all. With the two magikoopas keeping you walking - one in front and one behind - you had to steel yourself before you could actually come face to face with your kidnapper.
Your steps echoed loudly down the halls. One step after the other, like walking to the set rushed pace of a metronome, you forced yourself to remain confident. You were more than aware of the hanging cages decorating the more fortress-like areas; the skeletons brushed to the side were not that far out of view.
Scratches disrupted the perfect surface of the rock below your feet, telling tales of struggles that were overshadowed by the huge statues of a giant beast. You remembered how the stone was cut, chiseled with finesse to mimic the shapes of a raging monster. The pointy teeth. The sharp claws. The horns of a bull curling up like a laurel wreath. Even then, when looking at the hovering black flags that wore the emblem of this foreign kingdom, you had pieced together that the statues must have depicted the king himself.
You were right.
At first, when standing in front of his throne and having to crane your neck up to witness the true potency of his glower, you had hoped you could reason with His Majesty, King Bowser. You wanted to plead your case. You wanted to reason that this was all a misunderstanding. It was all a wreck of a symphony that could yet be fixed. However, with an arrogant upturn of his snout and the flick of his decorated wrist, you were quick to realise it was all just wishful thinking.
For the first few days trapped in this unknown world, you were kept locked within the dungeons. You were given a simple cot, the pillows flat and uncomfortable and not at all what you were used to back at home. The food was given to you as tasteless, uninspiring mush. The only light you were allowed was the dull glow of fire that filtered through the iron bars. You were held like a convict within the small cell.
All until you weren’t. The cold stone slabs turned to polished wood. The rationed prison food turned to exquisite three course meals. Instead of the now-dirty clothes you wore when you were taken in, you had been dressed in white fabric, edges of the garments trimmed and lined with colours of flames and gemstones mimicking the glimmer of embers. You don't know what brought about the change. Maybe the people of your home agreed to the king's conditions. Maybe the giant koopa had a change of heart. Whatever it was was definitely not to your benefit when you were placed in a large, golden cage beside the king himself.
Despite your voiced complaints and near constant nagging, the king insisted on having you dragged after him. You dined with him. You sat idly next to him as he slouched back on his throne. You were trapped in every sense of the word, stuck in a cage like a little, doomed songbird. A musician with no thrill and a creator with no hope. The only thing you could do was sit on top of a small bar attached to the base of the platform - a little, worthless bench that allowed you to rock your legs back and forth - with your body leaning forwards on your elbows. Trapped with nothing to do but lazily hum your comfort songs as you daydreamed of home.
However, be that a stroke of luck or of misfortune, your boredom was temporarily sated when you were brought into a large, circular space surrounded by a glow of thick, molten lava. It was a new place, and now the heat of the glowing walls caused your palms to sweat and your skin to sparkle with moisture. It was arid, but not entirely unbreathable.
The king placed your cage down on a small stool next to a black coloured grand piano, the plaque reading 'Ludwig Von Koopa' informing you of the brand, and sat himself positively on the cushioned chair. Confidently, his claw pressed the first key.
You're guilty to admit that you would have never expected the large koopa, let alone your beast of an impolite kidnapper, to be able to play on such a fine instrument. It was tuned perfectly, the sounds echoing within the body with beautiful resonance. The king's claws glided against the keys with a practiced precision you couldn’t help but observe. With each note he played, his face of concentration morphed to fit the sound. It pulled and it twisted as if you were not there, passion for the craft evident even in the way he closed his eyes. He leaned his body in when the tune demanded a longer sound, and swayed backwards for the faster notes.
You gawked at him, your silhouette still as you simply watched him play. At first, you were certain that you recognised the chord progression. You thought you knew the melody, the kingdom you were from known mainly for its involvement in the evolution of music. However, you refused to be vain enough to say for certain. In some places it sounded familiar, though that was common within many compositions. In other parts the melody sounded original. It was unlike anything you have ever heard before, and it was something that would have never reached the shores of your homeland. It sounded like something born to this room, and the flex and twitch of the king's arms showed the truth to that.
You watched as his brows furrowed, then relaxed. Then they furrowed again, and His Majesty's playing took a pause.
One try after the next, King Bowser played and replayed a certain part of the melody. The composition was unfinished from the looks of it, and you readjusted your spot on the metal bar. You heard him huff as he glanced at your movement, but other than that he ignored it in favour of the piano.
Playing for a minute, he stumbled, then he tried again. Each time he started from the same bar, giving himself room to think. He tried, and failed. He tried, and failed again. After about the fifth time, your eyes flitted away from his general figure and turned instead to the entrance of the room. You stared blankly at the door, eyes unfocused slightly as you listened to him play.
F major seven, G major, F minor. You knew those chords, recognising them as they rang in the background of the sound. Then, the king faltered, the misplay making the piano ring an off tuned sound. A broken noise.
Turning your focus back to the koopa, you noticed the angle of his face no longer flowed with the wave of musical passion. You saw him bare his sharp teeth in anger, the smug grin from his confident playing wiped clean off his snout. His claws hovered with a twitchy tension above the monochrome keys as if he didn't wish to inflict the aftermath of his rage onto the instrument. His eyes twitched as his bushy red brows furrowed in spiteful annoyance, following a distinct streak of black smoke that pushed itself out of his nostrils.
Blinking, you turned your gaze forward to think again. F major seven. G major. F minor… and then another misplayed key that sent a growl echoing into the silence of the room that fought against the popping sound of lava. F minor… but what if…
"Try A-Sharp minor," you chirped, leaning your body forward on the hard seat as you looked up at him expectantly. His attention turned away from the piano, his head tilting up slightly so that he could more strongly look down at you.
Instead of the friendly acknowledgment you would have hoped for, the king gave you silence. His eyes were sharp and narrow, cast in a fiery glow that made his frown appear shadowed and menacing and arrogant. The look made you slouch back in your seat, watching as he huffed out yet another cloud of ash. This time you could taste the sulphur on the base of your tongue. "Be quiet," he instructed, turning his head back to the piano with an irritated swing of his tail. You watched as his hands clenched and unclenched above the keys.
"I'm only trying to help you-"
He snarled, the sound deep and guttural, causing your mouth to shut in an instant. It was a wordless instruction that made you cross your arms.
Sitting up straight, you grumpily turned your body away from him as an act of small rebellion. Your features lay low on your face then, a small pout twisting your lips. Though you refused to look back, you could feel his eyes on you as the silence hung like thick goo between the two of you. Then you heard him shuffle and you relaxed at the tentative press of one of the keys. The king went back to playing.
Starting from the very beginning, you closed your eyes as you let the sour taste of tension dissipate with the sound of the notes. You were lost in the sound of the piano, only hearing the sound of King Bowser's breathing whenever a pop of lava snapped you back to reality. Any stolen glances you permitted yourself revealed not a face of anger, but instead one of contemplative concentration that did not affect the quality of the piece. He wordlessly continued, note after note, chord after chord, until he returned to the end of the section.
The first chord sounded. Then the second. Then the third. You were certain that he would hesitate again, but to your surprise he played your suggestion, minimally delaying to play the starting chord again. A minute or two passed as the giant koopa finished with the piece. Then he stopped and you opened your eyes.
Slowly, his eyes scrolled to meet yours, brows raised lightly with his lips parted. He stared at you with those brutal red eyes, his hands playing the chord again, and again, and again causing you to shrug. Letting his features relax, it was as if the aimed annoyance had completely dissipated from his body.
"I wasn’t expecting you to actually play it," you mumbled. However, your surprised tone was lost on him as he tilted his head up, side eyeing the piano before looking back at you.
“How’d ya know?”
You hummed, kicking your feet slowly in the air as you balanced on the metal seat. "I thought about it."
Your kicking stopped as a low growl rumbled in his chest, his snout pulling back incredulously, "you saying I didn’t?"
"No," you turned your entire body to face him, stradling the seat to match his show of arrogance, "I'm just saying that I did."
“It doesn’t explain how you knew the chord.”
“It does.”
He grumbled, “does not.”
“Does too.”
Huffing, the king childishly tossed his arms in the air, turning his attention back to the piano with a pout evident on his snout, though he didn't seem to notice, or at least he didn't seem to care. You observed him intently as he froze in his spot, thinking. Then his clawed hands pressured down on the piano in favour of a different tune. It was a lively one, a melody that originally belonged to a much larger, angry symphony. However, when singled out the tune almost sounded happy. Hopeful. It was also a composition that you definitely recognised, and one that King Bowser played with an expert's touch.
Your intrigue had returned, and you subconsciously leaned your body in. It was honestly beautiful. His hands fluttered across the length of the piano. The movements were muscle memory, the skill seemingly engraved into him.
Tilting his head from side to side as if he breathed the music itself, you almost missed the side glances he threw your way. Every once in a while, after every enunciated chord, you saw his downcast, amber gaze turn to you.
Whether it was him showing off once again - probably what the original purpose of coming to this room was - or it was a test, you did not care much. You listened, then you took the bait. You allowed your hands to flow in a familiar motion, as if you held onto a conducting baton. Every other moment, you listed the key or the chord he had played. You saw his fingers twitch at this, but he continued and so did you.
Sometimes he would slow down the tempo, sometimes he would speed it up. Most of the time, throughout the course of the piece, his eyes remained on you, bar from the few glances back at the keys. He played the piece to its end, exhaling a loud breath before his attention turned to you. You were still humming, in your mind finishing the parts that the very much missing ensemble could not. When you looked back at him, his eyes were glowing flames, though it wasn’t in any form of wrath. It was a curiosity, one that silently egged you on.
"I know how to play," you offered with a grin, your finger pointing at the piano through the bars of your cage. However, your hands were quick to dart back to your face to cover your grin. This was your kidnapper. He no doubt wanted to butter you up to use for ransom or he wanted to use you as a tool in a political war… and yet even knowing that fact, the grin refused to leave your face. Especially not after you saw His Majesty gawk at you with a smirk of his own.
He blinked a few times, eyes twitching from you to black shell of the piano. Then they closed, the grin dropping. You waited, and after a moment he opened them again. "Prove it."
Your lips thinned slightly and you tilted your head to the side. You ran your hand down one of the golden bars of the cage, your brows raised, "from in here? Or will you let me out?"
The king huffed then, and just as his lips moved to respond, the doors to the room creaked open and your collective attention turned to the single magikoopa that entered the room. He looked startled and unsure. Frightened almost. It was a dull reminder of who exactly you were sitting with.
"Your Majesty, Kamek requires your presence," the magikoopa said with a prominent waver in their voice.
Poorly masking the forming anger, King Bowser blew out a steam of flames at the unwelcome interruption, standing from the piano stool. His eyes looked to you before he shook his head, once again flicking his wrist with a disinterested persona. "Take them back to their room. Make sure they're fed well."
Your eyes widened, "what? Hey!" But the king ignored you, stomping angrily out of the bright room. He ignored your shouts, and you had to bite your tongue into silence as the mage awkwardly lifted you cage with a mist of purple magic.
Though it had an inconvenient end, that was not the last time you sat in that room.

Don't you love it when Heroes, a game famous for character assasination and flanderization, manages to get a character right ?
Don't you also love it when Heroes, a game that gets confused easily by all the interations of Heroes it portrays, manages to get their character developpement right and respect their narrative ?
But above all, don't you love it when heroes confirms your interpretation of said character was the correct one ?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Giving up is not always a bad thing.
As time pass, the tears of resignation can feed the fire of determination.
She is refering to chapter 10-11. When she refused to run away even after Veyle stole the rings and still wanted to go after them. Confirming what I said in that post, the lesson Lucina and Lyn were teaching Alear was refering to them not wanting to give up despite the terrible situation after Hyacinth as been defeated, and not when entering the cathedral unlike what people think. This is the current situation that made Alear though back upon how they misunderstood Marth's advice and that has the leader of an army, they shouldn't take advice so lightly, especially heading to the enemy's den. And 10 chapter later, Alear will show that they learn when giving up.
Tumblr media
In truth... the Blood of the Fell dragon flow in my veins
(which means FEH will probably introduce Veyle and Sombron as Alear's relative)
Tumblr media
It is not because of shame that I revealed you this. What matters are my actions, not my background. (she learns her lesson guys)
Tumblr media
I can now be whatever you need me to be : a Divine Dragon, an Emblem, or even a Corrupted (this line hurts)
Tumblr media
And if you decide to become someone else, I will be your friend and protector, I will always be here for you.
So what are those lines revealing :
1/ Despite wanting to overcome her past, Alear isn't ashamed of being a Fell dragon. Makes sense, if you recall in her supports with Veyle and the Twins, Alear speaks easily of being a fell dragon too.
2/ The reason why Alear feels at odd with her fell nature is due to the live she had as a Fell dragon as I already mentionned. Alear's memory and subconsience works by association and in her case she associate being a Fell dragon with commiting evil deeds while associating being a Divine dragon with virtuous life.
3/ What Alear wanted isn't to become a Divine dragon, or at least isn't limited to that : what she want, first and firemost is to become a virtuous hero that saves the world. If you recall when Griss drop the nuke on Alear's head and Sigurd confirms it, what bothered her was that she couldn't fufill the promise she made to Lumera about saving the world in her stead since she lacked the power of a Divine dragon, and what relieved them from Sigurd was to hear that her dream of becoming a hero was still possible to fufill. In the dream cutscene in the prologue, it's an idealized vision of the transition cutscene where their dream of saving the world was fufilled (even if it was just she wished things had arrived that day). When she meet with Lumera, Fell!Alear wasn't trying to become another species of dragon, but to change as a better person as in her dying words she mutters "I won't become a virtuous dragon afterall" and when she eventually faints she said to Lumera " [I wish I can be] like you, a Divine dragon saving the world". Alear doesn't just want to become a Divine dragon, but a dragon that saves the world and this line is the only line that could infer that Alear wanted to become a Divine dragon, but in reality it's the "becoming someone who saves the world part" that is important since as she mentions how she had become the hero she wanted to be only to die now, and when she dies a thrid time, Alear cries as she realize she wont be here to save the world. And in those lines, the fact that Alear accepts her condition regardless of whatever may be is made very explicit since her dream is to save the world and it doesn't matter which form/appearance she is locked in, as long as she can fufill that dream, she is fine with it. And that's how you realize she really managed to overcome her fear of Corrupted as she accepted all the forms she went through : her birth form (fell dragon), her new form (divine dragon), her form as a dead (Corrupted) and her reborn form (Emblem), but her soul remaind the same. Someone determined to save the world.
And that's even something present in one of Veyle's PR wake up events when Veyle mentions how Alear taught her that while her physical state isn't something she has control over, she can still control her heart/soul and despite changing bodies, Alear's soul remains the same.
4/Alear accepts people that want to change. That is important because it's the main reason that can motivate Alear in giving her forgivness or not. That's how she reacted with Veyle, and why she forgave Rafal : they were willing to become a better person. I really think that this line in particular is refering to Veyle seeing how Veyle ended up having the same dream as her big sister.
I am so happy that Heroes respected Alear's character, not just the fact she can't turn into a dragon, but also the whole developpement including that her actual dream is becoming a hero, not just a Divine dragon.
