Daniel vs "Big Daniel": The Peak Example of the Lookism Phenomenon

a.k.a "No, it's not just about gangism. It's still lookism fgs".

As usual, with each recent development, there are those who complained that lookism as a webtoon had long lost its way, what with the duel between Daniel and the Body, or "Big Daniel" as we used to call it.

Daniel's struggles are the most easily spotted examples of the lookism theme. The most common of which is his survival from bullying. However, and arguably, Daniel's worst enemy was neither the bullies, the top dogs of the criminal underworld, the stalker, nor the members of multiple crews.

The enemy had always been himself.

It was Daniel who almost sabotaged his own potentials by choosing to stay in a safe zone of invisibility and blaming his looks for his supposed misfortune.

After all, it was Daniel's old desire for perfection that drove him to use The Body as his crutch. That is, until, in Ep 342 he realized that it could run amok and kill anyone in its path. Daniel also realized that had anything happened to the Body while his consciousness was tied to it as shown in Ep 396, he'd be dead. The Body was a liability, a specter, and a peril.

As such, the duel of Daniel versus The Body in Eps 467-468 is the current peak manifestation of the lookism theme. You see, the dangerous existence of the Body itself is a prolonged consequence of Daniel's past desire for perfection. In turn, that very Body that Daniel used to make friends, had now harmed not only Daniel himself but also his friends and allies.

The cycle of lookism is vicious, and it casts a long shadow over many things.

Lookism: Ep 469 Reaction

SPOILER ALERT

In this episode, a recovery was made of a long lost relationship.

In a flashback, Jake received Jinyoung's red headband from Bongae, with the message to make sure that Jinyoung saw that, because Jinyoung left it in Bongae's hand after he and Gabryong knocked down "a great power". That headband was Jinyoung's hero getup, something he wore when he was out there saving the world.

Bongae was realistic about this mission, however, and he was sure that Jinyoung would fight Jake because the pharmacologist had been disturbed for a long, long time.

Onto Jake's duel versus Jinyoung. The younger man was cornered as Jinyoung kept pummeling him with Gabryong's and even Tom's technique. Seeing the red headband just incensed Jinyoung since he thought that Jake (or rather, Jake's brother the patricide killer) must have killed Bongae too.

It was not until Jake was pushed to the edge and he swore to stand up to protect his people and wouldn't fall, like Gabryong, that Jinyoung was snapped out of his drug-induced oblivion.

Tearing up as he remembered young Jake (no I'm not crying, smoke got in my eyes), Jinyoung offered Jake a hug, even as Jake punched him. He stopped as he saw Jinyoung crying and apologizing to him, for not being there for everyone and for "letting" Gabryong die.

Just as Jinyoung almost told Jake what happened the day Gapryong was murdered, Alexander burst in to tell them that things were going badly for the rest of the Allied guys. Jake wondered if it was Hangyeol, but no. As we could guess, The Second Body had managed to utterly exhaust Vasco, Warren, and Jerry while it still stood undefeated.

Jake still remembered that "Big Daniel" (gosh Daniel just own up to all of your friends already fgs) was terrible "in that state" but before he could do anything, Jinyoung tied the red headband around his head and said that he'd take care of it.

Jake warned that "Big Daniel" was dangerous, but Jinyoung insisted on facing it, saying that he'd do anything for Jake. That from then on, he was on Jake's side...

Goodness the death flags for Jinyoung. I don't know how many of you watch kdramas and films but sacrifice of a character who feels guilty for not remembering/for being lost for a long time/for being bad is a common trope in them. It's as if the Korean popular media want to punish these characters for forgetting, or maybe it's simply a matter of different culture, different tastes. But it will be such a huge loss if Jinyoung is not given the chance to recognize both Daniel and the Second Body, whose resemblance with him are so uncanny.

WEEK 2 -- GIANTS @ CARDINALS

The Giants pulled a rabbit out of the hat after being down 20-0 at the half to win 31-28 on K Graham Gano's 34-yard FG with 19 seconds remaining. Giants QB Daniel Jones rallied his team in the second half as they scored 24 unanswered points. Giants go 1-1 on the season while the Cards are 0-2 and will be left wondering how their defense became completely undone.

I’m about to make off towards Shrogea DA-A d5609. Then the next waypoint. And the next. This is doable. I just need music and to keep my sanity.

Something that frequently strikes me during this journey, is when I notice that the ominous nebulae that had been on my horizon for so long, are now behind me.

Also, I keep seeing these things. What are they? They almost look like they could be galaxies of their own.

Just arrived in Dumbooe RU-X c14-2165. That’s another few waypoints down. And only four more to go, with the forth being our final destination.

I can’t believe I’m almost there. I spent so long regretting setting out on such a long journey. Living in that awful empty space where turning back would take just as long, if not longer, than pressing on.

A journey like this takes some mental fortitude. Maybe best done with a friend. You can take shifts in the cockpit if nothing else.

Though, a stronger ship would make a journey like this a lot easier too. Maybe when I’ve refamiliarized myself with that kind of thing, I can start working towards an exploration vessel with a longer jump range.

Myrielk DA-A c510 had a lone, ringed planet in it. I decided to take the time to scan it before moving on. The rings are full of void opals and low temp diamonds and other goodies. A little out of the way for miners to make use of it, unless a fleet carrier decided to bring a bunch of them all at once.

That said, there are way more convenient places for mining. Even the idea of a secret spot without pirates is like. There are gonna be closer spots.

Universal Cartographics is taking forever to load, probably due to it having to crawl back through two years of data. I’ll leave it trying to deal with that while I stretch my legs.

Okay, I have 20 pages of cartographic data to sell. I wanted to go through page by page and add up how much it would all come to, but it turns out each individual page has that long loading process. So, I’ll subtract my current balance from whatever I end up with after selling it all. I’m currently sitting on 19,814,364 credits.

Spent some time getting my ship repaired and such.

I also realised, my exploration rank had shot up to Elite, so you know I had to slap a decal on this ship.

I explored the starport a little, bought myself an artemis suit, which will let me look at plants if I understand correctly. More importantly, I get to wear a cowboy hat with it.

There are some touristy things I can look at in this system and nearby, but for now...

Your captain needs sleep.
