Favorite Final Fantasy Music (FFXI - Add-ons and Bonus)
FFXI week finally comes to a close, and this is the part where I pick songs that just didn't really quite fit in any single expansion, or cases like the extra add-on content which were really their own thing and even are listed separately on the title screen. Absolutely could not have done this game justice doing just one list, and this was a great time for me to relive some nice memories from me playing this game I definitely did not want to reup the sub nope.
There's also technically probably another section I could make on this, but I actually haven't played the new Voracious Resurgence content, so I don't wanna do that part dirty and just pick shit without literally any context. Anyways, let's finish this up so that I can actually increase the number after FF.
5. Dolphin Any XI fan will tell you: the hardest part of the game isn't losing levels. It isn't the gameplay, it isn't the bosses that take hours and hours and actual cheating to beat, it's fucking installing the game. This is because FFXI has its own special launcher that Square Enix was gonna use but then proceeded to only do with XI called PlayOnline. It is absolutely a product of its time. But you know what it does? It gives you BANGER TUNES TO LISTEN TO. FOR NO REASON! You're sitting there installing the game? Here's a bop. You're just trying to log in and you're frustrated that your password doesn't allow capitals? Here you go. This song will make you feel better. Dolphin is the song that always plays whenever I open my PlayOnline launcher to play FFXI. And you might say: "Styrm, this isn't a game song, why is this in the list?" and to that I say: It's in the official soundtrack. And PlayOnline is such an integral part of the FFXI experience that I would argue that it IS part of the game. That's why it's here. Love this shit. Please do yourself a favor and listen to all of the PlayOnline songs, cause I'm not gonna fill this list up with 'em.
4. Iroha First funny thing; I cannot find an official upload of this song, so I'm using the version they put in the FFXIV soundtrack cause it's also there identically. This is the theme of Iroha, the main heroine of Rhapsodies of Vana'diel, the essential finale/wrap-up storyline of the entire game. The reason I like this song, is I think less for the song and more what it reminds me of. I do love the soft piano and the empty backing, the very tense and sad sounding BIM bum that keeps playing; but most of all, this makes me think of that character, and how much the storyline really just was a letter to fans from the devs saying thank you. It's somber, yet beautiful. There might be songs that fit this feeling better, like the ending theme, but this is the song that does it for me.
3. Distant Worlds Something that stinks, is that I can't find a good honest upload of this song. Everything official is either the Distant Worlds orchestra version, or the Black Mages version, which, to be fair! are both good. So let's hope this unofficial version doesn't get taken down lmao. Another technicality with this, is that this is technically the ending theme of Chains of Promathia; but, it was introduced later, and it really feels separate? It's kinda its own entity, also only being in bonus soundtracks. It's really beautiful though. Taking that main Memoro de la Ŝtono motif, but turning it into an ending theme that almost befits the entire game. Not only do I love the main melody, I am a big fan of the warbly sort of sound that plays a lot, cause that really gives this song that XI feel rather than just being a nice vocal track. You ever wanna assassinate me just start playing this and I'll be paralyzed
2. Provenance Watcher Another very strange case of "I didn't know where to put this song". This is the final boss theme of the Voidwatch story, which was more like in modern senses a patch story to Wings of the Goddess? But it again very much feels like its own entity. Add on the fact that the song itself is in the Seekers of Adoulin soundtrack and I was just like "Ok you're going with the rest of the weird off cases". Either way, love this song. The beginning strings rhythm is such a cool sound, and then add on the really low horn for that sense of foreboding, befitting the Giant Fucking Dragon Creature you are fighting. The build up for this song is amazing, and uses all of the classic FFXI instruments you know and love by this point. My absolute favorite part of the song is midway through after a lot of the instruments have kinda stepped away for a slight flute bit, and then it blows up with this amazing sounding bit with the entire orchestra. I can't quite do it justice with my words, but hopefully you'll know when you hear it. Also can I just say shoutouts to the Naoshi Mizuta tambourine????? It has no right to go as hard as it does in this entire soundtrack.
1. Shinryu And here we are. The final XI song in my lists. This is the final boss theme of the Abyssea storyline, which is split up into 3 separate parts. Shinryu in this game is essentially the bad timeline version of Promathia (Abyssea as a whole is a sort of bad timeline in a way). The song starts with this incredibly menacing brass orchestra, one part giving you this heavy almost percussion like vibe, and the other part giving you the main sort of melody in the start, absolutely perfect for this literal end of the world dragon. Then it gets fun. The actual percussion comes in with a really fun beat, the orchestra starts the meat of the song, feeling like a really fun and triumphant final battle. And my favorite part? The out of nowhere hopeful sounding bells and strings that sound almost heavenly, they sound heroic, like you're going to save this doomed world. The song goes back into more menacing, like Shinryu is beating back, giving me more of that Dragon Quest IX sound I love. After a really cool loud hit rhythm, the drums do this amazing offbeat section that gives the song a really fun vibe, then going with a sort of royal sounding section featuring a flute/horn duet, and finally, into the grand finale where everything comes together to play off the song, having the heroic vibe from earlier; you are winning. You are going to save the day.
Honorable mentions this time are: Filter branch (this is also PlayOnline music lmao), Wail of the Void, Rhapsodies of Vana'diel, Luck of the Mog, Feast of the Ladies, and even though I've pretty much already mentioned it in this series, gotta give it up for my boy Main Theme - FINAL FANTASY XI Version.

(SPOILERS) Maiden’s Rhapsody 2022 Notes
SPOILERS(?) FOR THE MAIDEN'S RHAPSODY
- marks a new thought. ! marks what I felt was important. + marks new section
+"A Journey to Remember" -Remumu, works for the Harbor Herald: Always a journalist in these -Unusual warrior, maiden from the Far East, unlike other Far Easterners -Remumu had story stolen by Petyr, she's getting this one: Costa del Sol -I've been on the FF wiki enough to recognize XI attire: Selbina? Mhaura? This ain't Vana'diel, friend -This is a reminder that you can still play FFXI -Iroha: Woke up, can't remember: Glaive, I remember an XI job using glavies -Head empty, only Master and technique (Amatsu: Kyori) -Return memory through recalling techniques. -First up, the beach: I've heard tales of those crabs: Nice, back to Limsa !Optistone shard, for Iroha -Demon monkaS -Doesn't think that's her mission -To Haukke Manor: Off to Gridania !Aurastone shard: Elf? -Journey with a girl, comrades beyond counting: XI adventurers? -Going by the important missions and Iroha saying "but I'm just a lowly student" I'm convinced she's the Master -To the Sagolii Desert, then to Ul'dah: WHAT IS THAT Serket (heh circuit) !Orastone shard: Forbidden magicks, big wolf -Iroha mistook tales of a hero as her own memory -Memories back, time to finish training: Bronze Lake then back to Limsa -Amatsu: Kyori unlocked !Iroha traveled back in time to avoid destruction of Vana'diel, with heroes: Master was greatest hero -To Remumu, finally got her story -Sentient jewel (crystal) made Vana'diel basically: San d'Oria, Bastok, Windurst -"a spiteful god our destruction" oops -Something tells me Master is the player in XI -Don't look at me like that, I never played XI -Be safe, Iroha: So much for that, she stuck !FREE GLAM WOO: None of it looks good on me lol
Back in the day, I always wanted to play XI, but alas, my family was too poor to pay for subscription services. I may partake at some point in the future, but I'm satisfied with XIV for the time being. There is no glaive job in FFXI, by the way, I was probably combining Samurai and Dragoon.

Iroha: Lady Arciela, one day we must sit down and discuss the sweets of your homeland. And then they did!
Inspired by the dialogue Iroha II says when summoned, while Arciela II is in the party. I imagine them pulling all the cooking related books off the shelves in the Celennia Memorial Library in Eastern Adoulin, gathering them on a table and studying them for all the sweets, puddings, desserts and all other kind of treats they might try eating or baking!
I've wanted to draw this for years, I'm glad I finally made time to do it - enjoy!

Shepherding a Maiden
Fipp: On the spur of the moment writing here, inspired by interests in FFXIV, FFXI and one of my favorite characters from the latter.
Shepherding a Maiden
There is a bright force just outside of Etheirys, Hydaelyn notices, and for a moment she worries what it could be, if it posed a danger to this star, if it was some unknown machination of one of the forces that posed to destroy it. However, despite the power she feels from it, it is also gentle, and makes no effort to invade despite the ease it would have, and instead it merely hangs outside the world.
May I please come in, it asks, as though it was knocking on her front door, and with the thoughts echoed to her does Hydaelyn realize there is nothing to fear. And so she lets it in. The light coming off the entity is bright, and there is might and power, so much to rival her at her peak, but the gentleness is still there, and not a single thought of ill-intent to be found.
She calls herself Altana, the entity explains, a goddess from a far-off, distant world, and she has come here to speak with her on a matter most important. Intrigued, Hydaelyn lets her tell her story.
The world Altana reigned over, Vana’diel, had almost fallen into complete ruin, swallowed by The Void, and even the mightiness champion had failed to stop it, but in the end only one soul was left. Using what remained of her power Altana had secured that lone soul and sent her into the past to prevent the final days of her world, and together with the champion who would later take her on as their apprentice did they succeed, and secured the bright future for their world.
Hydaelyn listened, taking in the other goddess’ grand story, and her heart ached for her. She knew well of the balance of light and dark, and how such a delicate balance must be maintained, lest worlds fall. She knew of the devour of worlds and the many form it could take, the Cloud of Darkness, the Flood of Light, and thought of The First and The Thirteenth.
Long have I sought one such as I, and I have found it in you, Altana continues, for I have a most important boon to ask.
And so she holds out her hands, and cradled in her palms is a soul, small but warm.
This is the soul of the girl who saved the future, Altana continues, but by doing so she erased the world she came from, and thus had nowhere to return to. Such a soul deserves more than to swept away by the tides of time, so I beseech you, will you please give this child hope, and let her call your star home.
‘A bastion of hope’, Midgardsormr once called Etheirys, holding the clutch of unhatched eggs to his chest.
Hope, something that broke Hermes when he could not find it in the vast and empty universe.
Hope, something that Meteion had long since forgotten as she sung her song of oblivion.
I will, Hydaelyn answers, and Altana weeps tears as she hands over the soul to her.
Thank you, Altana says, take care of her, of Iroha.
Altana then vanishes from Hydaelyn’s sights, from this world, back to the distant star of Vana’diel.
With the soul now in her possession, Hydaelyn gently places it down into Eorzea, and as Iroha discovers the new world around her, does she watch. It is of no surprise that the Warrior of Light finds her, and together they have their own small adventure.
As Iroha tries to sort through the recollection of memories she had, Hydaelyn wishes there was more she could do for the girl, who longed for a home she no longer had a place in, but in that heart can she see a strength that will not easily diminish. She leaves the Warrior of Light behind and sets out on her own journey, determined to find a path of her own.
And we press ever forward...
And the sun never sets.

i want to study at FFXI university
i will say DD instead of DPS and use exp-boosting items. i would build up TP and execute skillchains with my party members. i’ll have records of eminence every day that’s worth 300 sparks. i would go to capacity points parties every night. i am also more likely to meet Aldo, Shantotto, Iroha, and the Shadow Lord.
i wish i was Vana’dielan :(

Out of curiosity, with the crossover events such as FFXV, DragonQuest, Yokai etc etc etc, I do wonder... how "canon" are they? For example, I was considering my Miqo'te might pick up a rudimentary version of RDM from having done all that warping around with Noctis before getting formal training, but does that seem a bit... eeeeh? Know what I mean?
I think like a lot in this game, they're as canon as one wants them to be!
They certainly take pains to put them feasibly in the world. It's of an interesting note I think that the Noctis FFXV event is specifically "set" at the end of ARR but before HW, given Cid's attire. And funnily, that's about the same time one can pick up RDM--right near the end of ARR, as soon as one is level 50 in another job.
We know that FF chars do travel back and forth all the time for Dissidia; the Kefka minion description even mentions: "Other than a vague claim by Y'shtola that the doll you discovered in Omega's Sigmascape seems 'eerily familiar...'"
Some of these wandering visitors go home; others, like Iroha from FFXI, don't seem to get that chance. In her recently replayed event, I noted the parallels in discussion:
Tumblr media
[Remumu: <sigh> There goes the greatest story I'll never get to write. An adventurer from another world, traveling back in time to save her people. Who's going to believe such a silly tale? I'll leave the flights of fancy to Petyr. But for her sake, I hope she finds her way home, wherever that may be.]
Sounds an awful lot like certain Shadowbringers main plotlines and characters, doesn't it? Maybe all the Crystal-related worlds are just shards of each other in some ways, or at least related.
Given that, how far "out there" would such events be as canon, given the actual canon of this Anime RPGMMO? My answer is "not very far off at all" and write what you want concerning picking up styles and knowledge from visitors from other mothercrystals!

you know what would be nice this year for the ff fandom?
a genesis and angeal unit in opera omnia
wouldn't that be dandy
and some raid stickers and voice lines of them too
GOD yes.
I know Angeal was discovered after a data mine late last year or w/e, but he hasn’t dropped yet:
Tumblr media
One of the characters that was found in that same data mine/around that same time as Angeal — Iroha from FFXI — did just drop with Chapter 3-3 in JP DFFOO... so fingers crossed it won’t be too much longer with Angeal.
Genesis will be a trickier story, depending on if the plan is to bring Gackt back or not. But I’ll take anything I can get at this point lol.

Unorganized thoughts about the nature of the shards:
No XIV spoilers, but there are some XI spoilers below! Read at your own risk.
- Do the other shards occupy a physical space in ... outer space? My guess is probably not the same space as the Source.
- If not, then do they share the same moon? The same stars, somehow? Because if they are all parallel versions of the same moon and stars then Hydaelyn really did create 13 alternate universes. Whole universes. And I don’t think She is THAT strong. They have to have the same moon, right? Because Zodiark?
- They are all divided by a rift. But is it the same rift that Gilgamesh can traverse? The same rift that separates the FF worlds? I have to assume it is, just because the “rift” is used the same way in so many Final Fantasy games (including 14) that it would seem silly to differentiate them now.
- Not a thought, but a little theory for fun: one of the shards is actually the world of Vana’diel, from FFXI. Perhaps one that already fell to darkness (Abyssea). Kind of spoilery but in FFXI’s world we find out that it was a parallel universe all along, and the “real” world was actually destroyed, kind of similarly to the Thirteenth Shard. And with all the similarities between the two worlds, I think it’s a neat idea to think that it could be a reflection of the Source. I know the devs confirmed at some point that there’s no outright connection to other FF games, but I don’t think that was in direct reference to this possibility. Also, the whole Iroha thing (can they pleeeease do something with Iroha I’m begging)

✨  My Final Fantasy 30th anniversary art project is now complete!!  See the whole set, let me know which you like the most, and you can also buy prints here: https://www.redbubble.com/people/dice9633  ✨ -- Shantotto and Iroha from Final Fantasy XI (2002)! I know Shantotto is the developer and (I guess?) fan favourite, so she takes up the most space --- figuratively and literally! (see? I can be deep) (I really like Iroha though haha).  Not as much time put into this one, but it was fun having more wild strokes!  — See them all!
