intimate nights -- chapter 1
chapter 1: washing up to the shore
hey guys! thank you SO much for motivating me to write aaa i haven’t written anything in almost four years so forgive me if im a lil rusty but i’ll do my best !! 🥺 i imagined this as ben!rog but can be just rog in any era but modern setting x actress!reader !! hehe
this short series would have around 10-ish chapters so i hope you guys enjoy! 🥺 here we gOOOOOO
-----
The Rising Queen of Hollywood,  ___________ is featured in a new heartache-inducing, bittersweet movie titled Intimate Nights partnered with Richard Jones as her leading man. Set in the beautiful  island of Santorini, ________ and Jones are expected to steal and break the hearts of many with heartbreak, lovemaking, and powering through rocky relationships.
Fans can also expect a regal musical score with the director of Intimate Nights revealing a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration with Queen’s drummer, Roger Taylor for creative input and other surprising musical acts to further entice you to watch this blockbuster in the making.
Intimate Nights is due for a release Valentines next year. “And … scene! That’s a wrap for Intimate Nights and we’re headed for post prod!”
The crew and all the actors celebrated for joy, culminating their year of hard work with the movie that is very much anticipated. The magnitude of anticipation grows every month as the release date comes closer and fans are eager to see _________ and Richard on screen.
“Hey, _____! That was fantastic, I can’t believe filming’s over!” Richard approached you and welcomed you in his arms, giving you a warm embrace. The both of you have shared a lot in the past year you’ve worked together, even getting paired up as a rumor which both of you quickly denied.
“I know, it all happened so fast. You were a great partner, it would be lovely to celebrate with everyone, too!” You said until Richard abruptly stopped hugging you with an excited look on his face.
“But you know what I’m more excited about? The drummer of Queen is going to post prod with us, he’ll be working on the musical score and I’m fucking pumped!”
Your heart almost jumped at the thought of getting to meet your lifelong crush, Roger Taylor. The infamous drummer of Queen has been collecting hearts ever since they rose to fame, collecting your heart was an easy task. Your rising fame does not change that especially now that you get to work with him indirectly.
A few days has passed with the studio being slowly cleaned and sorted out after filming is done, you and Richard got called by the director to check out some scenes which you want to be included and others will be offered in the director’s cut. Being in the studio makes you a little drained and you got coffee for yourself and everyone else.
“Do you guys have any requests? Sugar? Cream?” You asked with collective answers that blurred along as you heard them, briefly taking notes who ordered what.
“Rog’s would be black, ______! He’s running a little late, ran into some LA traffic!” The director chuckled and made you blush as you ran off to the nearby coffee shop you always order from.
Taking your time with ordering and walking back to the studio hides the real reason why you’re not in a hurry to get back because you want to be presentable and composed the moment you see Roger.
“Ah, there she is!"
Richard announced which prompted the director and Roger to look at you, making you blush. The Roger Taylor is looking at you and is seating at your designated chair with your name on it.
“The lovely owner of this chair finally arrives with coffee, I can swear I am one step closer to heaven with the scent of beans from miles away.” Roger grins and helps you distribute the coffee to Richard and the Director. “It’s also a plus to be sitting in the chair of the most beautiful actress in this room.”
“Roger, I’m the only actress in the room right now.” You laughed and his grin widens.
“That’s perfectly fine by me!”
After choosing the scenes that you want to include and can let go off in the movie, Richard excused himself to be able to attend to a previously planned appointment. Roger and the Director are busy thinking of the most perfect and fitting music scores in the climax wherein you started falling asleep.
“__________?” Roger shook you awake, with a sorry smile on his face. He probably feels guilty now for waking you up but it’s perfectly fine by showing it with a smile and stretching it at the same time.
“Hey, I’m sorry for falling asleep on you guys. What happened?” You sat up and looked for the Director which was nowhere to be found and finding yourself covered with a jacket.
“If you’re looking for the Director then he actually went out a couple of hours ago, he forgot it’s their anniversary with their partner.” Roger chuckled and you shook your head because it is really something that sounds like the Director.
“Say, ________. Are you free for the night? My creative director won’t be coming in as well and I would really love to get a second opinion especially from someone heavily involved in the movie.” Seeing this as an opportunity to get to know Roger, you agreed. It is also a chance for you to see what you have missed out on when you got the chance to sleep which you have been lacking for the past few days.
Roger lead you back to the booth wherein you get to see the movie coming to life alongside some pieces he already made to accompany some specific scenes.
“I’m sorry for ending up falling asleep, getting to rest has been a task I need to catch up on.” You profusely apologized and Roger just smiled kindly.
“S'alright, the Director told me to let you sleep since the last few days of filming were quite hectic.” You couldn’t agree more, knowing that the last few days were tiring, emotional, and just wanting to finish the entire project which got everyone a little bit on edge. He went inside the studio and talked to you through the mic installed there.
“Can you hear me, love?” Roger’s voice boomed and you gave a thumbs up. “Splendid!”
The studio was where Roger was meant to be in. He moved gracefully in between speakers, stepped over wires languidly, handling instruments with utmost care and played it with precision. He is widely known as the drummer but he was obviously more than being behind the percussions. Roger is multitalented which he displays effortlessly inside the studio, playing the drums, the guitar, and singing a few lines to accompany the melody.
“You sound wonderful and sing beautifully, Roger!” You exclaimed with awe and he animates a very exaggerated bow which you laughed at. “Such a shame I’ve only heard you singing and playing the drums at the same time which pales the talent you have for singing.”
“Thank you, love. And call me Rog, please. Roger makes me sound way too old.” Rog chuckles and you smiled at him. Old? His barely grey locks looked amazing on him, his hair a little ruffled but it suits him just fine.
“Would you want to have a delivery for dinner? I am nearing starvation.” He teased with a pout, making you laugh. The atmosphere between you two completely light and friendly which is something you never expected. Truth be told, you expected him to be someone that the media portrayed him to be. According to media, Rog is the notorious Rockstar, always rambunctious in parties together with Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of the band, wild on the sheets, drummer with a temper, and just altogether a hot mess, literally and figuratively.
“Delivery? We can just get dinner in a restaurant. I know a place by the Bay—”
“Slow down, love. You want to dine me already?” Roger smirked and you smirked back in return. “You’re just shy I’m asking you first, Rog.”
Rog laughed wholeheartedly. He cannot believe you’re matching his game when other girls would just blush the living daylights out.
“You’re a delight, _________. As much as I would love to accept your offer for dinner, I need to practice and get the right tune for your movie.” He said apologetically and gestured at the studio. “That’s alright, we can just get Chinese takeout for now.” You said, instantly craving and already started ordering before Roger protested.
“You didn’t even ask if I like Chinese, love.”
“You don’t have a choice. What do you like?”“Fried rice, spring rolls and shrimp dumplings, please.”
You spent the rest of the night listening to Roger playing around the instruments and responding to his questions which is a better tune or melody, the chords that sounds better, suggesting whether to focus on one instrument over the other, this or that and it goes on until it is almost midnight and you notice other offices in the entire studio compound closing already.
“Rog, it’s getting really late so I think we should start packing up.” You reminded him through the microphone and he looks up at you from the booth.
“What, that late already?” You started packing up, ensuring you won’t forget anything in the studio. Your chauffeur is also out of commission with him taking a leave for a month which means you only drive by yourself or walk to your apartment which is just a few blocks away.
Roger closed the lights and all the machines inside the booth and he grabbed his jacket from the couch that you were sleeping on this afternoon. The same jacket you woke up to.
“Oh! I didn’t realize that was yours, thank you for letting me use it.” You said and he rolled his eyes dramatically.
“I was forced to do so! Imagine a beautiful lady sleeping on the couch, she might get cold.”
You laughed, never imagining you will get a compliment from the Roger Taylor himself. A few weeks ago, you learned that you were going to meet your crush and music idol and even prepared for the day to come and when the day finally did, you were floored with how much you wanted to know him more as a person and eventually become friends.
“How are you going home, Rog?” You asked while the both of you cleaned the place up and throwing your Chinese takeout boxes and drinks.
“Oh! I brought my car with me, I got stuck in traffic, remember?” Roger said, “And you?”
“I’m just going to walk back to my place since it’s near.”
Roger whipped his head back to you so fast you can only laugh with the possible whiplash he would’ve gotten. “Are you dead serious? I’ll give you a lift!”
“I’m good, my place might even be out of the way for you and I wouldn’t want to impose.” You replied and he sighed.
“Alright, if you say so. Here, type your number on my phone so I can call you if you get to your flat safe.” Roger said and you were relieved that he didn’t even put up a fight to bring you home. Walking alone at night is relaxing but you have to admit, you did not expect to stay out this late in the studio and did not bring your car, besides, there’s a first time for everything. You typed in your number on Roger’s phone and saved it as “creative director 🤪”.
“What did you save your name as?” Roger inquired and you smirked. “Creative director with a wacky emoji for a little attitude.”
The both of you laughed as you slowly walked out of the studio and headed for the parking lot, wanting to see Roger off first before you go on your way. The mood was quite relaxing, the quiet comforted you both after hours spent inside the studio with blaring melodies of sorts, the gentle spring breeze giving a breath of fresh air as winter slowly fades, and a new found friend in each other’s company.
“Since I got your number already, let me give you a lift home.” Roger smirked which bewildered you. Here you thought he would’ve let you walk alone but the point of you typing your number was simply to have it.
“That’s not playing fair, Rog. I’m really fine to walk by myself.” You said and he crossed his arms, matching the smug look on his face.
“Like you said awhile ago and I quote, “You don’t have a choice.” Get in the car, love.”
You sighed. This might be the first time you’re walking alone late at night but you are admittedly scared as well but of course, you will not tell that. After a few seconds, you abide and get in the car with Roger laughing and saying to himself, “Gotcha, gotcha.”
The interior of Roger’s car was breathtakingly beautiful, not to mention it is already beautiful on the exterior. It is also well known that Roger loves his cars especially sport cars with beautiful, personalized interiors.
“Your car is beautiful, Rog. Thank you for giving me a ride despite me wanting to walk home.” You teased but still thankful nonetheless.
“Not another word about that, ______, it’s the least I can do for you staying out so late with me. Give me your address?”
You directed him to your apartment a few blocks away and he complimented what a wonderful place you got and a smart decision to stay near the studio to lessen the hassle.
“Yeah, I hate LA traffic and getting stuck in it is not a good experience. I was once late for almost an hour for a shoot! Funny thing is we were all late due to the traffic anyway.” You quipped and he laughed. That was one of the deciding factors for you to move closer to the studio and be a little nearer to the city lights. “Where do you live, Rog?”
“I have a mini house located by the beach, actually. Pretty great view at night but sometimes gets a little loud. It’s where I stay when I’m in the city.” Roger explained yearnfully, “Love seeing the sun rise and set, something London barely has.”
“What do you have?”
“Fog, fish and chips, pubs, and more fog.” He jokes and you laughed. Living in Los Angeles indeed have its perks such as the sunshine and occasional beach trips but it is something you cannot envision for the long run. It’s a beautiful city, no doubt, but the idea of eventually retiring and living somewhere a little more quiet is very much enticing to you.
“Well, I would trade to that for even just a day here. When summer comes in LA, it is very humid!” You complained and he laughed, shaking his head. While the both of you were talking, you just started to notice Roger’s Chinese takeout boxes were in the compartment near the gear stick.
“Rog, you didn’t get to finish your dinner?” You asked and surprised to see it was barely touched with only one dumpling and spring roll missing. “You must be starving!”
“Now that you mention it,” Roger said, he laughed and felt his stomach grumble, “I am famished.”
“You can go up to my place if you like, I can heat up your food for you and you can eat there. It’s the least I can do for you since you drove me home.”
“My, my, asking me out for a dinner date and then asking me to come over your place? I have to say, I am impressed. I haven’t met anyone like that before you, love.” Roger teased and you slapped his arm while laughing. “Keep your hands to yourself, love! I’m trying to make it home without crashing.”
The both of you still laughing as he pulled to the porch of your apartment. He is in awe as he sees the white expanse of the bungalow and the foyer space you have.
“Wow. You call this an apartment?” Roger said and you laughed since this was an expected response which always happened.
“When I bought the place, it was listed as is.” You replied and he shook his head and bewilderment. You were amused because he is acting like this is the most beautiful house he ever laid eyes on but from the both of you, it’s him that has already traveled the world and have been in lavish mansions.
“Your place is beautiful, _________.”
“You haven’t seen the river side and the view from the pool.” You joked and he laughed in awe. You had to bring down the window to acknowledge your guard gate and he waved at you after opening the gates.
The front façade of your house mainly consisted of steps leading to the house itself, beautified with bushes and flourishing wildflowers, and a staircase leading to the terrace facing the street. Once Roger parked his car outside the garage, you led him inside and he gets astounded one more.
“It’s bigger on the inside!” Roger remarked while looking around and you asked for his Chinese takeout box which you heat up for him as he goes on to observe more of the interior of your place.
“Rog, maybe you should go outside and wait for me there. It is lovely to eat out and the view is beautiful.” You recommend which he followed, walking outside through the doors you pointed out to him.
Placing his leftovers on a plate, you heat it up on the microwave while you scavenge for a snack so you can join Roger on your garden overlooking the pool and the river. You only hope you were there to witness his reaction to seeing the view but you knew that the man was starving and you could use some alone time as well.
You placed everything on a tray, got some water and headed outside wherein you saw Roger lounging by the pool, his shoes off and is set aside under the dining table nearby, his feet wading on the shallow part of the pool.
“If only I had known your flat would be this beautiful,” Roger said and emphasized on the word ‘flat’, “Plus getting served Chinese food from a beautiful lady? I would’ve looked for more ways to know you, _______.”

Meet the team: building new platform features!
Tumblr media
Get to know the team at Piclo responsible for building new features on Piclo Flex. Introducing:
Adrian, Data Engineer
Hua, Service Designer and User Researcher
Liam, Software Developer
Meghan, Product Manager
Tumblr media
Q1. What does your role involve when Piclo builds new platform features?
Q2. What do you enjoy most about working on this?
I love understanding a problem and figuring out the best solution, and take particular pride in making it efficient when I'm able to.
Q3. Are there particular skills you need for this role?
I would say being able to translate between the real world and the world of data, and being an effective communicator. It helps when people want to know something but aren't quite sure how to ask for it.
Q4. Other than working on introducing new platform features what else does your role include?
I help with producing data insights for both industry and commercial purposes. As data engineer, I'm also closely involved with testing and managing our cloud infrastructure to ensure we are able to scale the platform.
Q5. What did you do before joining Piclo?
I have worked as an analyst and software developer for an environmental consultancy and an off-grid solar provider. Before that I did a PhD in volcano seismology 🌋
Q6. Why did you like the look of the job?
I wanted to work at a company involved in modernising our energy infrastructure that also had technology at its core. I had heard good things about Open Utility (now known as Piclo), it fit the bill, they were about to embark on the Piclo Flex project, and they were hiring. So, here I am!
Q7. Piclo is built on the belief that we are not powerless against climate change. Is tackling climate change important to you? Is there anything you do to contribute?
Tackling climate change is absolutely important to me. Whenever I can, I champion our scientific understanding of climate change (being a geoscientist). I've also tried to build my career around work that helps solve some of the inefficiencies driving climate change. In the name of environmentalism I also gave up eating meat.
Q8. What advice would you give to someone wanting to follow a similar career to yours?
You don't need a PhD in volcano seismology.
Tumblr media
Q1. What does your role involve when Piclo builds new platform features?
Before we commit to any new features, I do some investigations to understand the problem and then share the insights with the team, then we explore solutions together. I prototype different solutions to help with visualisation and the prototypes are then used to help validate our assumptions with the users. By the time we are ready to build, the design has gone through quite a few iterations. We follow the Lean startup model of build - measure - learn, so launching new features is a step in the loop; afterwards I collect quantitative and qualitative feedback, which will guide us to figure out what we should build next.
Q2. What do you enjoy most about working on this?
The flexibility market is not only new to me; it’s also new to many players in the market. I’m learning with them together and helping this market to evolve. The past 12 months of remote working was only made bearable by the wonderful people I work with. My colleagues gave me a lot of support and inspiration. The shared vision of a decarbonised future keeps us motivated.
Q3. Are there particular skills you need for this role?
Putting aside the hard skills of being a designer, I have benefited from developing some soft skills: being curious, being empathetic towards others and myself, getting comfortable with uncertainties and learning from making mistakes.
Q4. Other than working on introducing new platform features what else does your role include?
I sincerely believe that designers don’t hold the best ideas or know the solution to every problem; designers can play the facilitator to guide the team to develop innovative ideas based on their expertise. Disseminating the user knowledge within the team is an essential step after user research. I try to create reusable artefacts, reports or visualisations to store these insights. I recently got very interested in doing quantitative analysis and discovered some useful behavioural patterns and trends.
Q5. What did you do before joining Piclo?
I was freelancing and worked on a few exciting projects in public service and fintech. Somehow I always ended up working on complex domains with highly specialised user groups. I have been fortunate to collaborate with great teams that unite around user needs and are very generous to support each other.
Q6. Why did you like the look of the job?
I’d like to drive a positive impact contributing to solving the climate crisis. A friend of mine told me about their work in the energy trading space, and it opened my eyes to this industry. When I first met the team, I got a good vibe. Alice shared the employee handbook with me before I joined; it showed some very progressive thinking in how the company is run. The product ethos is user-centric, and there is a good understanding of the value of design activities.
Q7. Piclo is built on the belief that we are not powerless against climate change. Is tackling climate change important to you? Is there anything you do to contribute?
Yoyu is a simple app that shows the carbon intensity of energy production forecast for the next 24 hours. I try to shift my energy consumption to the time when there is more renewable energy. I have a smart plug connected to all the chargeable devices at home and it is timed to switch on based on the information in Yoyu. I also compost waste as much as possible. Landfills create a lot more greenhouse gases and soil is the carbon sink - I’m delighted that the local council offers composting!
Q8. What advice would you give to someone wanting to follow a similar career to yours?
Don’t stop learning. The environment around us is rapidly changing, which is very exciting. The way we work and design are constantly evolving. Be creative about how you can enrich yourself, either in learning new skills or pursuing new interests.
Tumblr media
Q1. What does your role involve when Piclo builds new platform features?
Trying not to overpromise and underdeliver. My role generally involves taking designs, requirements and packages of work from the product team and turning them into something that can be used. It’s a fairly stimulating mixture of user interface/frontend development mixed with backend data wrangling. I try and steer clear of the super techy infrastructure side of things.
Q2. What do you enjoy most about working on this?
Being part of a small team working on a specific problem, it’s nice to have input at pretty much every stage of defining and implementing a particular feature, as opposed to churning out widgets of code.
Q3. Are there particular skills you need for this role?
Pragmatism and compromise are always useful.
Q4. Other than working on introducing new platform features what else does your role include?
In a good way, my role is pretty much entirely devoted to this purpose. There aren’t many random tasks or meetings I find clogging up my day (aside from filling out timesheets).
Q5. What did you do before joining Piclo?
Harvesting cookie data for a soulless marketing platform. Before that I was a soulless management consultant.
Q6. Why did you like the look of the job?
I like how Piclo is genuinely trying to solve a problem that hasn’t been addressed yet.
Q7. Piclo is built on the belief that we are not powerless against climate change. Is tackling climate change important to you? Is there anything you do to contribute?
It’s obviously a huge problem but I can’t profess to it informing my everyday life. Sometimes though, there’s a convenient overlap between my being stingy and green behaviours: cycling as much as possible; picking the meat free option.
Q8. What advice would you give to someone wanting to follow a similar career to yours?
Trust your instinct.
Tumblr media
Q1. What does your role involve when Piclo builds new platform features
As a product manager I have a wide range of activities I get involved in when building new features. A quick summary: defining the problems we’re trying to solve, supporting our designers during user research, unpacking all the learnings, co-leading discovery sessions to dig into the problem we’re trying to solve, bringing the team together to design solutions, ticket scoping, and validating recent releases via testing.
Q2. What do you enjoy most about working on this?
As cliche as this sounds, I really do enjoy taking problems off people’s plates, and improving things through our software. As a product manager, you really do have a direct impact on identifying user problems and championing solutions to keep evolving your product.
Q3. Are there particular skills you need for this role?
I think it’s really important to be empathetic in this role. If you struggle to understand your user’s or the pain points that the developers might be feeling, you will also struggle to be a successful PM. Good, clear communication is hugely important. You need to be confident in the decisions you are making, as many times you need to explain or justify why you are or aren’t doing something. Finally, I’d say that collaboration as a PM is a vital skill to embrace and keep getting better at - great products are built with the whole team, and it’s important to know when to reach out to experts on your team to make decisions.
Q4. Other than working on introducing new platform features what else does your role include?
Essentially, my job entails making sure that our production teams are working on the right things at the right times. At Piclo this is a really collaborative process. I’m involved in roadmapping, sprint and release planning at a high level. On a more practical day to day level, I assist in problem discovery, definition of features, ticket scoping and post development testing and validation. I also get to liaise with a lot of different stakeholders in order to improve our product. I especially like supporting our customer success team to get a pulse on what is happening with our product.
Q5. What did you do before joining Piclo?
Just before Piclo I was working for a Madrid based startup. Our product was akin to an Oyster card for live events - mainly music festivals. I had many different roles there but naturally progressed into product management. Aside from the usual PM work, I got to travel loads and see our product being deployed at many a music festival - that was a nice little bonus 😎
Q6. Why did you like the look of the job?
I found myself questioning more and more whether or not where I was choosing to spend my time was meaningful in the grand scheme of things. When the answer turned out to be a ‘not really’ I knew it was time for a change. I loved Piclo’s mission (still do), and I sincerely think that we are building a product that is changing behaviours today to tackle climate change. I was also really attracted to Piclo’s emphasis on teamwork and transparency. This is not just something that we say on job descriptions. We work hard every day to maintain this principle.
Q7. Piclo is built on the belief that we are not powerless against climate change. Is tackling climate change important to you? Is there anything you do to contribute?
Tackling climate change is important to me, it’s one of the reasons I landed at Piclo. I contribute by not eating meat, choosing a green tariff on my energy bill, when commuting choosing to cycle, and I’ve recently subscribed to Mossy Earth after our CEO recommended it 👏🏼 Really nice project!
Q8. What advice would you give to someone wanting to follow a similar career to yours?
Don’t be afraid to try, fail, learn, and ask a lot of questions along the way. Also, find a community of like minded individuals that you can share your experiences with specifically as a PM or aspiring one.

Our beliefs often develop without us knowing what’s happening at the time.
But once they’ve formed, they remain with us, frequently for the rest of our lives. We assume that their perhaps odd orientation is, in fact, “normal.” Over time, our beliefs are taken as facts.
We cease to be lost not by returning but by turning into something else.
— Rebecca Solnit
Perhaps the biggest form of privilege may be growing up surrounded by people who believe in themselves, who believe in you, who can push past the obstacles that others — often unfairly and inappropriately — may put in your path.
Mission Statement
A Mission Statement, as we see it, is meant to answer four questions:
What do we do?
Why do we do it?
Who are we that’s doing it?
For whom are we doing it?
We view it like the North Star; though we can’t ever actually arrive at it, it provides a good sense of long-term direction.
Vision
A Vision is a description of success at a particular point in time in the future, written out with a good bit of richly engaging detail and emotionally meaningful descriptions. A vision, as we see it, gets very specific about what we want to do at that point in the future; how we’ll feel about it, how others might feel about us, etc. Our vision for Zingerman’s 2020 is about nine pages long. Our mission, on the other hand, is short, just six sentences.
Guiding Principles
Guiding Principles, or values, are not where we’re going or why we’re going there but rather a detailed description of how we’re going to relate to each other and the world around us while we’re doing this work. They are, I suggest, the most closely held of our beliefs, the ones that we don’t want to change even when holding true to them might cause us significant pain.
Systems
Systems are the processes we use to produce products, maintain sanitation, develop our services, sign up new staff, make potato salad, etc.
Culture
Culture is really everything about our day-to-day existence. It’s the way our lives at work really work — not what we say we’re going to do but what we actually do.
How do we find out what we believe?
One way I’ve learned to discover my beliefs is to do this simple exercise: Begin by writing this statement, “This I believe …” Then keep writing for 10 or 15 minutes. Even five minutes will get you going. Basically, you keep writing without stopping for the entire time allotted. Writing straight through keeps you from overthinking. If you want, you can focus the exercise on a particular subject — yourself, your work, your significant other, your mother, society, the world.
Belief cycle
Tumblr media
The self-limiting belief cycle by Bob and Judith Wright
When we have a belief, it’s likely that that belief will lead us to take some sort of associated action. For instance, let’s say we believe that our ideas aren’t worth much and no one really cares about what we think. The action that follows might be that we rarely voice our views at work. That behavior will likely feed the belief in others that we have little to offer or perhaps aren’t very committed to the company’s success. Which will then lead those coworkers to take action accordingly — they might not ask us for our views on important issues or include us in discussions. Which will then reinforce our original belief that others don’t value our views.
Exercise: Backtracking on Beliefs
Try tracking the Wrights’ belief cycle in reverse. Start with the actions others are taking that reinforce your beliefs and then head back up through the cycle (going counter-clockwise instead of clockwise).
“Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and freedom.”
— Victor Frankl
Road sign in Tennessee:
“Choose your rut carefully. You’ll be in it for ten miles.”
Reflection is the best route I know to track our beliefs. The challenge is to push ourselves to take time for some introspection — to really become mindful of what it is we believe and then to correlate that with what we want.
What do we believe about the following?
Ourselves
Our lives
Our livelihood
Our friends
Our staff
Our boss
Our customers
Our family
Our future
To get going, simply settle on any subject that’s on your mind. Start things rolling by writing out the simple statement: “This I believe about X …” and then just keep writing for at least 15 to 20 minutes.
From E. F. Schumacher, Small Is Beautiful:
"We lived the Industrial Age deluded by three great magicians, illusionists. One was the illusion that somehow, against all laws of nature, infinite growth in a finite environment is possible. The second entertainer said that by some strange law of nature there is an unlimited supply of people who are prepared to do mindless repetitive work for quite modest remuneration. The third illusion, which is still rampant, is that science can solve all problems.”
The inverse of each illusion is a positive belief. Mindful and considerate growth is far more sustainable; everyone wants to engage in meaningful work; although science has important things to share with us, intuition, emotion, and the natural world are all integral to a healthy and rewarding existence.
If we expect the best from folks and believe they’re going to do great work, it’s way more likely we’re going to get it.
Four styles of responding
by Margin Seligman
How to mindfully process the way we respond to others:
Active constructive: Enthusiasm and encouragement are offered for what’s been said. Even if we don’t agree with all of the content, we can still come across as supportive. We could say, “Wow! That’s a seriously interesting idea! I’m gonna give that some definite thought. Tell me more about how you got there.” Julia Cameron calls those who respond this way “believing mirrors,” people with whom it’s a great idea to share an early version of your personal vision. The approach I’ve taken of greeting every idea as if it were a new customer fits right in here. It’s my intellectual version of the 10-4 Rule — when I get within ten feet of an idea, I make direct eye contact and smile. And when I get within four feet, I give it an enthusiastic greeting! This doesn’t mean you can’t offer input or insight about how to make someone’s suggestions even more effective. But it does mean you start with good listening and encouragement, and then begin to actively support the person in exploring their proposal.
Passive constructive: Acknowledgement is given, but that’s about it. This is a less generous and less effective response, though at least it’s not negative. It could be a simple “That’s interesting” or “Good idea,” but with no real follow-up.
Passive destructive. The other person is tuned out in any number of ways that all send pretty much the same disengaged and unsupportive message.
Active destructive. This least generous response finds the shortcomings in whatever the other person proposes and then actively undercuts that person’s efforts.
Here are a dozen quotes that speak to my beliefs about anarchism.
The general contention that anarchists are opposed to organization, and hence stand for chaos, is absolutely groundless. True, we do not believe in the copulsory, arbitrary side of organization that would compel people of antagonistic tastes and interests into a body and hold them there by coercion. Organization as the result of natural belnding of common interests, brought about through voluntary adhesion, Anarchists to not only not oppose, but believe in as the only possible basis of social life.
Emma Goldman
The value of coercive power is inverse to its use — more so very day.
Robert Greenleaf
Our task is to push people to demand and seize all of the freedom they can grasp, to make themselves responsible for providing their own neeeds without waiting for orders from any kind of authority. Workers will no longer need a manager; they can manage themselves.
Errico Malatesta
Workers will no longer need a “manager”; they can “manage” themselves.
Dean Tucker
Freedom is a reality within your heart. Know it, acknowledge it, claim it, use it.
Peter Koestenbaum
Anarchism aims to strip labor of its deadening, dulling aspect, of its gloom and compulsion. It aims to make work an instrument of joy, of strength, of color, of real harmony, so that the poorest sort of a man should find in work both recreation and hope.
Emma Goldman
The revolution begins in our own hearts.
Peter Block
Each member needs to believe that the organization is theirs to create if any shift is to take place.
Peter Koestenbaum
You are free. And we mean by this that you possess free will. Political freedom can be taken from you but your free will cannot.
Peter Koestenbaum
The possibility of anarchy depends on the belief that people can always change their behavior.
Gustav Landauer
I believe that everyone, of whatever age and circumstance, is capable of self-transformation.
Warren Bennis
Humans have the capacity to freely and independently create a life that is their own. No one lacks the ability, the disposition, the potential.
Gustav Landauer
Emma Goldman:
Anarchism is the spirit of youth against outworn tradition.
Freedom From vs. Freedom To
“It is not the negative thing of being free from something, because with such freedom you may starve to death.”
Beliefs about anarchism
Anarchism is a belief system, a way of living life, not a political program
It’s about freedom to, not freedom from
Effective leadership is important, but overemphasis on hierarchy is problematic
The means we use to achieve a goal must be congruent with the ends we’re trying to arrive at
Everyone, regardless of title, age, race, gender, religion, eye color, or anything else, is a creative, capable, intelligent, and unique individual
While role definition and clarity of responsibilities are important, there is no correlation between hierarchical position and intelligence, creativity, or ability
People who are thinking and working freely, respectfully, caringly, and living in harmony with the Natural Laws will generally do good work. Creativity follows.
Good things don’t come from situations where people are forced to participate in anything — work teams, countries, classes, armies, political parties, ethnic groups, relations, athletic affiliations
Judging people badly based on any element of their personhood is always troublesome
When people live in harmony with nature, their natural abilities come out best
Anarchist beliefs are very much about creativity, freedom, and positive possibilities. At its core, anarchism is always about a positive belief in people.
Exercise: Follow the recipe for writing a vision of greatness
Ingredients
Belief in the process
Your gut
Some time
Willingness to make yourself vulnerable
Readiness to do something great
You’ve gotta wann
The willingness to stick with the process
Procedure
Step 1: Pick your topic
Step 2: Pick your time frame. I’d recommend going at least three, or probably five to ten years out.
Step 3: Put together a list of “proudds.” They may be both facts (things you’ve achieved already that will help you get to greatness in the futre) and/or feelings (how you felt when you experienced success in the past).
Step 4: Write the first draft of the vision. The first time through is onaly a draft! Write what you like — you can edit it later many times.
Go for something great. Don’t hold back. It’s the only life you’re likely to get, so make it a great one.
Write from the heart.
Get in the future.
Go quickly.
Get personal and specific.
Step 5: Review and redraft. Set the vision aside for a few days and then take it back out and reread.
Step 6 (optional): More redrafts.
Step 7: Get input from people you respect.
Step 8: Let’s go — start sharing the vision.
One + One = 170
Three legs on a stool are more stable than two; relationships are the same way. The relationship that any of us have to our workplace is more stable, more resilient, and more enriching when we are active in parts of the business beyond the specifics of our day-to-day job responsibility. The more people get involoved in an additional element of the organization — their own job + another work group or project — the higher the quality of their experience here tends to be.
There’s the business benefit from the work people do in their secondary role. And for the staff members themselves, there’s the opportunity to significantly enhance their work experience.
12 Natural Laws of Business
An inspiring, strategically sound vision leads the way to greatness (especially if you write it down!)
You need to give customers really compelling reasons to buy from you
Without good finance, you fail
People do their best work when they’re part of a really great organization
If you want the staff to give great service to customers, the leaders have to give great service to the staff
If you want great performance from your staff, you have to give them clear expectations and training tools
Successful businesses do the things that others know they should do … but generally don’t.
To get to greatness, you’ve got to keep getting better all the time!
Success means you get better problems
Whatever your strengths are, they will likely lead straight to your weaknesses
It generally takes a lot longer to make something great happen than people think.
Great organizations are appreciative, and the people in them have more fun

applications now open for the fanauthor workshop!
thank you to everyone who participated in my survey a few months ago about the fanauthor workshop, my (@bettydays) upcoming independent study in which i’ll be leading an MFA-style online workshop specifically for fanauthors.
unfortunately, due to the constraints of the workshop model, i will only be able to accept a limited number of applicants, which is why i’m running an application process. here’s all the information you’ll need to decide if you’d like to apply, and how to go about applying.
both the workshop and application are free. i am doing this for graduate credit in lieu of a literature seminar this semester.
what is a workshop?
a creative writing workshop is a round-table style discussion about writing. specifically, you read a peer’s work in advance of the meeting, and then we discuss the piece, offering constructive criticism, while the writer listens and takes notes. prior to the meeting, you also write a letter of critique to the writer.
when and where is the workshop?
the full workshop will begin on September 4, 2017. there will be about a dozen participants, depending on how many applications i receive. ideally we will meet on Sunday evenings around 7 - 9pm EST via Google Hangout, but i am absolutely willing to negotiate meeting times. if you have evenings and/or weekends mostly free, please still consider applying, even if Sundays specifically don’t work for you. you can let me know any constraints you have in the google doc linked below.
why are you doing this?
fanfiction taught me how to write and i have immense respect for it as a genre. i think fanauthors do amazing literary work, and i’d like to take what i’ve learned from my MFA so far and bring it back to the community that fostered my passion for writing.
moreover, i like talking about writing. like, a lot. i thought it might be pretty fun to get class credit for meeting up with fanpeople once a week to talk about fic.
what would i get out of it?
ideally:
a bunch of new friends
constructive criticism on your writing
a polished piece of fanfic to post to an AO3 collection
(if fall workshop) a polished piece of original fiction to submit for publication or to other workshops
a platform in which to ask questions you have about writing, publishing, etc.
more comfort providing feedback to other writers
being part of something cool and weird
providing input for my craft essay on fanfic as a literary genre, which i plan to publish
the satisfaction of helping me become a better teacher
the summer trial workshop
the summer trial workshop will be held the weeks of August 21 and 28 (tentatively). we will meet two or three times for two hours apiece.
you can apply for this if you only want feedback on a short piece of writing, either fanfic or ofic, with a very small group of people. 4-6 participants will be pitching any type of work up to 10k words, and we will meet twice to workshop and go through any bumps in the process. you will read and provide feedback on a total of 3 other pieces, receive crit on one, and fill out a survey at the end giving me feedback on the overall process so i can tweak it for the full semester.
the fall fanauthor workshop
we will meet 14 times over the span of as many weeks starting September 4 (provided i get all the bumps fixed from the trial run), again for approximately 2 hours apiece. during these sessions, we will workshop two pieces and also have a short craft discussion.
prior to each session, you will have to read both pieces, provide marginal comments in the shared document, and write a short letter of criticism to the author. i anticipate the workload will take approximately 5 hours a week of your time, not including the hours you spend writing your own pieces.
each participant will be workshopped twice. there will be two cycles: one for fanfiction and one for “original” fiction (ofic).
cycle 1: fanfiction
you will write one fic up to 10k words to share. any ship, any fandom, any content. you must also be willing to read any ship and any fandom. if you have triggers, we can discuss and work out a content warning system as necessary at the beginning of the semester.
our craft discussions during this cycle will revolve around defining fanfiction as a literary genre. i will be taking this insight and writing a final craft essay at the end of the semester as my independent study final.
at the end of the semester, you can revise your fanfic piece and we’ll make an AO3 collection of our work.
cycle 2: original fiction
you will write one piece of ofic up to 10k words to share. this can be anything you want it to be. the goal of this cycle is to workshop a piece of original fiction to either apply to programs/workshops with or submit for publication/writing contests.
our discussions during this cycle will revolve around the publication process and any other questions that come up. we will also be reading published original pieces of my choosing and discussing them from a craft perspective.
should i apply?
yes, if you:
have 5 hours a week to spare this fall and can meet mostly at the designated meeting time one evening per week (it’s ok to miss one or two for emergencies, etc)
are over the age of 18
want to improve your writing and help your peers improve theirs
are interested in discussing writing with like-minded individuals
are willing to chat with us via webcam
but what if i don’t have a piece of original fiction ready?
that’s ok, you’ll have 6 weeks of fanfiction workshopping to prepare an ofic piece
but what if i’m not a student?
you don’t need to be. the workshop is open to everyone.
but what if i don’t want to post to AO3 at the end or submit my original fiction anywhere?
that’s okay, it’s completely voluntary.
but what if i suck at writing?
you don’t. and anyway, the whole point of a workshop is to get better.
but what if i write really dark stuff?
hey man, so do i. it’s all chill.
but what if english isn’t my first language?
apply anyway. usage/grammar errors can be fixed and i won’t be harping on them in the application process. as long as i can understand what’s being written, that’s what counts.
but what if--
APPLY.
to apply, please fill out this google form. applications are due july 31, 2017.
if you have questions, please feel free to send me an ask.

APhotoEditor; Ask Anything – Photographer Rep Fees, Relationships and Responsibilities
I read the article APhotoEditor; Ask Anything – Photographer Rep Fees, Relationships and Responsibilities that feature former Art Buyers and current photography consultants Amanda Sosa Stone and Suzanne Sease speak about they roles within photography and how their roles work within the wider industry, of which will further my knowledge of the agency industry.
QUESTION: I am wondering if we might hear from some reps, consultants and photographers about what they think the rough breakdown is for rep commissions and what a photographer should be expecting in return for these fees. I currently pay 25% of my fees on jobs my agent negotiates. My rep is not participating in social media AT ALL and is often unavailable to do quotes leaving me to either do them myself or revise them myself if I want the deal closed. I am not entirely sure how many meetings they go on every month, but would love opinions on what I could reasonable expect here. I am also not sure there is much beyond e-promos being done on my agent’s part, I do a LOT of my own promotion and do not rely on my agent for much in that department. Since I am very active in promotion myself we are often bidding with clients I have been pursuing through my own efforts for years before I started working with my agent. Perhaps this is just one of the many struggles of the photog/rep relationship but I am wondering at what point I ask about a percentage reduction if I can’t get certain things from my agent, and what might some others in the industry feel those standards are?’
Amanda and Suzanne: Having a rep requires open communication. Does a rep relationship change over time, of course it does. But you have to both have an understanding of what each of you will do. Many of our clients assume that marketing can cease once a rep comes into play. In our opinion, a rep’s goal #1 is to be there to negotiate, projects and land the job. A rep’s 2nd goal is to help you keep up your exposure, but it’s a role that is not one sided, both parties need to commit to a plan that works for everyone.
ANSWERS: AGENT 1: While every agent/artist relationship is different, the one thing that is constant is that you are partners working toward a mutually beneficial goal. You are a team and there are times each one needs to help the other. It is reasonable to expect your agent to go on appointments and be available for estimates. There is no set number of meetings every month and getting appointments is much harder than it used to be (many creative shops are limiting portfolio reviews to once or twice a year).  As for social media & other forms of promotion, it sounds like you both need to have a conversation and discuss/define each others expectations and who’s handling what. If after that, there is no clear cut definition, then a percentage reduction is probably not the answer. It might be time to sever the relationship. AGENT 2: As I am sure you know, every rep/photographer relationship is different. It is important to discuss expectations at the onset of the partnership. These questions should have been answered prior to the agreement. That being said, I think it is critical that the agent be involved in the estimating and negotiating process. If your agent is good, this is where they earn their commission. I find it strange that the agent in question is not involved during those critical times. As an agent, I love this part of the job and know that I create a lot of value for my artists in this area. Rather than a percentage reduction, I would suggest a serious discussion regarding responsibilities and expectations. Even if the agent in question agreed to a percentage reduction, I would imagine that their level of commitment and actual work for you as an artist would subsequently be “reduced.” If a discussion doesn’t work or is not desirable, it may be time to look for a new rep. Good luck! AGENT 3: Regarding our respective obligations, we first and foremost view our relationship with all of our talent as a collaborative one and feel that to be successful, we must have great communication, mutual trust, a shared vision and a firm belief in the value of both parties’ contributions towards realising that vision. We are fortunate to have had longer lasting relationships with our talent than normal in this business and are quite proud of that fact. While there have been and will be challenges, we’ve worked through them due to our shared interests, respect and trust. We strive for excellent communication and complete transparency with regards to what we are doing on our talent’s behalf. To that end, we provide quarterly call report summaries to each party detailing all of the calls that we received pertinent to them, the source of the calls (if that can be ascertained) and the results. In addition, we also provide follow up summaries after all of our portfolio shows, specifying where we went and who saw the work. We also encourage anyone in the group who is free and interested, to join us for the shows (locally or out-of-town). Our financial arrangement is consistent with all of our photographers, as we feel that a common agreement is most fair. Our commission is 25% of all negotiated fees (travel/prep/shoot/post) and any retouching fees not being expensed to either an outside or studio staff person. We are the exclusive representatives for all of our photographers in North America, and worldwide for those who don’t have international representation. We would assume the same would apply to you, specific to your print/still photography business. We are also interested in bringing you motion projects, and given your relationship with outside production companies, need to work out the specifics on how that might work to the satisfaction of all. Our photographers cover 100% of any individual marketing efforts they do or have us do on their behalf, plus the cost of creating and updating their portfolios/sites and any general mailing/shipping specific to them. We see the AGENCY’s primary responsibilities are as follows: – To build awareness for our photographers’ work through consistent and well-coordinated direct sales, promotion and PR efforts. – To identify and pursue market opportunities for individual photographers as feasible. – To develop production budgets with input from photographers and producers and negotiate those budgets with the clients to which they apply. – To review all contracts/purchase orders and handle all billing and administration duties related to our photographers’ productions. – To provide timely feedback/input from our sales activities, in-coming calls and pertinent results. – To provide input on portfolio imagery. – To aid in the development and execution of any individual marketing efforts done in addition to the group campaigns we coordinate. Our photographers’ primary responsibilities are: – To maintain updated, professional portfolio materials (individual and group books). – To provide a minimum number of portfolios needed to meet market demands. – To provide timely updates to their individual web sites, and rep website. – To provide the necessary files and and proofs for any promotional efforts we coordinate, in a timely manner. – Oh yeah! – to handle the communication and creative challenges of high level advertising productions with great aplomb! In addition to all of the above, the only other item we need to discuss is whether or not we will be involved with any of your existing/current clients or “house accounts”, and either way, detailing who they are and how we intend to work with them. Normally, I would a define a “current client or house account” as someone with whom you’ve worked with within the past six months, or on a regular basis over a longer period of time, but am open to your interpretation. AGENT 4: Obviously every relationship is different but it is important to communicate with each other regularly. Both photographers and agents wear so many more hats these days and must keep up with the new frontier, which includes social media. Both need to get on this bandwagon, but need to coordinate their efforts. Coordination with emails blasts, social sites, portfolio shows and estimating projects is so very important. Both photographers and agents need to speak up if either feels something is missing. It sounds like this artist is pissed but may not be expressing his concerns to his rep. This is the first think you need to do. NOW! Frankly I can’t understand the quote thing. That’s what we live for. Maybe it’s time for a new relationship? A fee reduction, no matter who’s offering it, is always insulting.
PHOTOGRAPHER WITH AGENT: I’m sure others will say, a rep relationship is like any other partnership, including marriage, and is based on trust and mutual respect. Without these things there isn’t much you can count on. I am working with my second rep, the first was not successful in my eyes based upon their lack of participation in promoting their own brand (and therefore my brand) outside of email blasts. They did not seem to have a plan for marketing and advertising but instead saw the possibility of success based upon adding more talent to their roster, cheating their current core talent of resources already in shortage. With the second rep, it is the polar opposite. There is a strong communication, dollars invested in making our target audience aware of our talents, and respect for ideas expressed. I have also seen the rep relationship up close when working as an assistant. What I have come to expect is that the talent and the rep should all be contributing to the marketing efforts, and it costs money for everyone. As far as I know 25% is still the norm though I have seen 30%. A photographer cannot expect a rep to handle all of these costs or efforts, and neither can a rep expect the photographer to do it alone (otherwise why would you need a rep?). Once you have a rep, you still have to be as diligent as ever in keeping contacts alive and well.
‘A rep is only as good as their communication, estimate deliveries, client support and marketing exposure delivered.’
This is interesting to look at as this gives me an idea on what problems do occur within the agency industries, and gives me a clearer insight into how to rectify these problems / what I should and should not be doing as an agent.  It has made me think more deeply about the agencies roles as a negotiator as well as getting the photographer the job and gain ultimate exposure, and how I can do all these things without letting the photographer down.  With future work experience I can begin to learn these roles more thoroughly as well as through work experience now to improve upon this so I don’t gain problems like this.  Another element highlighted frequently in this article is the relationship between the agency and the photographer, agents within the article have stated how important it is to create a rapport - and when looking for new talent this is one aspect I will really think about, because as shown above, it can lead to problems if they are not the right fit.  Agent 3 improved my insight greatly f into the roles of an agent, with some I haven't seen / heard of before.  This has helped me in looking at how I can do these roles and what skills I need to improve on as well as what I should avoid (mistakes) whilst to do when doing them.  Overall, this article has given me further understanding of the agency role, as well as what to mistakes to avoid when being an agent, and what I should expect when being an agent, all of which has helped me for the future.

Better to discover someone you can really feel comfortable with.
 Meeting personally.
Do not enable on your own to be pressed right into fulfilling a person before you all set. See to it you do not agree to anything prior to you fulfill them face to face. The initial meeting ought to resemble a little bit like a day because you still have room to make your mind up on whether you 'd like to go on with any kind of adult task with the individual your conference.
Make sure you meet in a public location the first time and also if you like you can even organize for your pal to be neighboring to watch on you. Your online friend will certainly comprehend and also suit your dreams if they are truthful about their intentions towards you. If throughout the day, you determine to go elsewhere, utilize your own transportation and also attempt to stay in public areas up until you feel you know the individual well enough. Mosting likely to your own residence or their own is not optimal. If you want to go somewhere extra exclusive it is best to head to a resort (as well as preferably one that you make the appointment for).
It's important to let a pal recognize where you are going, with whom, and also organize to call them after your day. If you take a trip to meet your internet friend, make your own resort and car reservations and also do not break down personal details about yourself while on your day (workplace, contact number etc). Get your very own transport to as well as from the date even if you're offered a lift.

Can One Punch Man: A Hero Nobody Knows Punch its Way to the Top?
One-Punch Man is a creative take on the superhero genre: what if the hero was so strong, nothing was a challenge to him? Saitama’s antics of always being disappointed in his world shattering powers being wasted on villains other heroes can barely touch gives the show most of its heart and character, but how do you translate that sense of apathy to a video game? Since fighting games are all about flashy action and pulling off cool combos, moves, and comebacks, playing as Saitama against other heroes and villains seems pretty silly; after all, he’s just going to win in a single punch! Bandai Namco have come up with an interesting twist to this: you have to survive long enough for Saitama to show up before you can see his awesome power on display in One Punch Man: A Hero Nobody Knows! While an intriguing idea, how well did it play? Well, I got to play the multiplayer beta of the game on the XBox One, and I’ll let you know… It’s complicated!
The multiplayer beta offered players three options: a local mode against the computer, a Saitama version of multiplayer, and a non-Saitama version. Regardless of the version you select, you’re given the choice of building a team of 3 characters, with the restriction being that modes that include Saitama force him to be your 3rd and final choice, and that he will only arrive in battle after 250 seconds have elapsed. If that seems like a really long time, it is! After selecting, players are taken to the battlefield, where they fight in 3D combat arenas with free movement, being able to swap between the fighters they’ve selected, giving players some options towards team composition, styles, and knowing when to swap characters in and out to protect them or push an advantage.
Controls are fairly simple: characters move with the left analog stick, and the rest of the controls are based on simple button inputs. There are no complex commands for special moves, and instead characters can perform moves by consuming the “Move Meter” by holding Left Trigger and combining it with a face button for various types of attacks. When the meter is high enough, characters can enter an enhanced state or stance change by pressing R3, and pressing it again for most characters executes an impressively cinematic super move. Characters can also dash freely by holding Right Trigger, or directly towards their opponent with L3, giving them a boost of speed to close gaps or take advantage of knockdowns and wallbounces.
In terms of control, the game felt fine and functional. There was never anything overly flashy in the gameplay, and the control scheme is simplistic and allows players to learn the rules fairly quickly. There are only four buttons in the game: a weak attack, a strong attack, a block, and a jump, and combined with the more specific buttons mentioned above, creates the entire toolkit you have to work with as you play. Simplistic controls don’t always mean bad, and many fighting games take advantage of simple controls to hide a lot of depth.
In my time with A Hero Nobody Knows, I was left thinking that the game has some interesting systems, such as timed perfect dodges, combos based on juggling and wall/zone bounces, and finding ways to make various moves flow into one another. But there are some places where the game seems fairly as simple as it presents itself, without many hidden systems or unique quirks that you might expect in other anime based fighting games.
Since the beta was only multiplayer, I can’t speak to any campaign or single-player based content, but it does seem as though players will be able to create a character of their own to take into battle; when the beta started, we were offered two heroes, one a ‘speed’ based one, and the other a ‘power’ based one, who borrowed various moves from other heroes to create a mixture of unique moves. In practice, it felt somewhat odd to play as a generic character when the One-Punch Man characters were also readily available, except in the sense that they had a combination of moves from other characters that would otherwise not be seen together. I found myself choosing the avatar character a lot during my time playing, mostly because I found them easy to use and somewhat simple to play compared to characters like Tatsumaki, although I would hesitate to say any character is really difficult to play as.
Instead, I just found that most characters played somewhat the same, with certain extremes like Sea King, Silverfang and Tatsumaki being the most different. Otherwise, Genos, the avatar, Sonic, Mumen Rider, and Atomic Samurai all felt fairly interchangeable, and despite the game listing their hero ranks, they didn’t seem to matter at all in gameplay. When my player character C rank avatar took out Sea King with a set of consistent wallbounce combos, I knew that there might be something… off about the game. The issue is really not one of gameplay (it plays great!), but theme.
During my time playing the beta, I actually only got to play as Saitama twice. Once was during my first match against the CPU, in which I was mostly just figuring the game out and doing very little, which allowed the timer to run out and Saitama to appear. The second time, I had to specifically go out of my way to not win the match too quickly for him to show up again, meaning that I spent the tail end of the match purposefully avoiding my opponent simply to get Saitama to appear, rejecting the CPU’s attempts to have me defeat it by rushing right up to me and doing nothing, daring me to just end the fight. The problem isn’t even that Saitama takes too long to show up; you can actually shorten his timer by doing successful combos, perfect guard dodges, and special moves, but what this ended up resulting in was a type of score: how low could you get Saitama’s timer before you defeated your opponent?
The closest I came against another player was 15 seconds, and they had a single character with a sliver of health left, meaning Saitama would have simply been a cruel joke more than a reward at that point. Playing in ‘Saitama’ mode and not selecting him makes the imbalance even more obvious, as you end up with one player with 3 available full power characters against someone who has more or less handicapped themselves, with the promise that they may be rewarded for it if they can survive. Against everyone I played while doing this, none of them even came close to summoning him, let alone winning.
For a series about such an interesting protagonist and lots of cool heroes and villains, the themes of One-Punch Man actively work against it being a compelling fighting game, which is most visible in the sense that Saitama is perhaps the biggest problem in the entire game. While Saitama is fun to see on the screen, he doesn’t actually “work” in the game. Saitama is obviously impossible to defeat, and a simple light attack instantly defeats every opponent. While he can perform a super, it’s mostly just to see the impressive cinematic rather than needing to pull it off for any reason. In some sense, this is a fighting game based on an anime that is actively hampered by its protagonist: everyone wants to play as Saitama, but playing as Saitama isn’t actually all that fun, and the other characters are entertaining but they aren’t Saitama, a point the show and manga have made numerous times. I think this might be why I didn’t care about playing the generic player character: none of the other characters were Saitama, so did it really matter who I was playing as?
A Hero Nobody Knows feels like it has reverse Poochie syndrome: when Saitama isn’t on screen, everyone’s asking where Saitama is, but they also actually WANT him to be there. When playing modes without Saitama, the game works quite well as a fun, punchy fighting game, but the characters feel oddly generic in these circumstances. While it lets you do the ultimate anime game pleasure of “what would happen if Mumen Rider fought Speed of Sound Sonic,” characters that are obviously more powerful than others never really FEEL more powerful than others. Mumen Rider should, obviously, be the weakest character in the game, but he’s more than capable of taking down any character with ease, which somewhat breaks the fantasy the game is trying to sell.
Thematic issues aside, the game looks fantastic! Character models are well rendered and look like they should, voices are well done, and the game even has fun little pre-battle dialogues where characters that have some sort of history will trade verbal barbs, even if they aren’t on the same team. Mumen Rider and Sea King will trade words, and you can even recreate the “Sassy child” scene if Saitama is against Tatsumaki. Entire team scenes can play out in various circumstances as well, such as a team of Saitama, Genos, and Silverfang that has the older martial artist trying to recruit the two of them to his dojo.
While the game’s main thematic draw is somewhat dissonant, you absolutely get what you bargained for in terms of character theme and interaction, and we can only assume that the singleplayer components missing from the beta will take full advantage of these features. Frankly, A Hero Nobody Knows almost seems like a better single player experience than multiplayer, letting players explore the One-Punch Man story and engage in some video game exclusive content and scenes, than it is as a competitive versus fighter. Players can expect to have fun duking it out, and if you’re a big One-Punch Man fan, you’ll probably find stuff to love here, but the game system isn’t deep enough to draw in non-fans or curious fighting game players.
When our time with the beta came to a close, we found ourselves feeling a bit like Saitama: unfulfilled. The game plays great, and online versus other people was smooth and had very few hiccups, and everything about it shouts “solid but not game changing fighter.” The biggest problem, though, is that the theme—and Saitama—don’t work the way it should. Perhaps we’ll see what the full game has to offer, but for now we’re cautiously optimistic, hoping we can find a game worthy of our abilities and powers to use. We’re looking for a game that offers us a challenge and allows us to feel amazing when Saitama shows up to save the day. As it is, right now we mostly just feel like he does: Ok.

Essential Android & iOS Puzzle Games 2019
There’s perhaps no genre more synonymous with mobile platforms - especially iPhone or Android devices - than puzzle games. Low intensity inputs are good for a device with no buttons, and the pace of these games plays well with the low session time, start-and-stop nature of mobile gaming. Puzzle games also take so many unique forms nowadays that a top list in the genre can produce completely different looking games.
If you're looking to test your literacy skills, we've got a great collection of Word puzzle games as well!
As you'll see below, we have our own menagerie of titles that we feel represent the best Puzzle games have to offer across iPhone, iPad and Android devices...
Other Recommendations
Not every puzzle release earns a place in our 'Best of' list - so here's a round-up of some recent releases that you can check out, make up your own minds about:
Marching Order
Donut County
One More Button
Alphabear 2
Powernode (Review)
Developer: Opal Games Platforms: iOS & Android Price: $1.99
With a visual aesthetic that reminds us of the rather excellent Mini Metro, Powernode is a fun and challenging puzzler that has you connecting power generators to nodes to stop them from disappearing. Cables are permanent, and you have more nodes requiring attention than you have power crystals, so planning is key. New nodes spawn as you complete existing ones however, throwing an ever complex range of spanners into you intricate power network.
It's got a few niggles, but this is an excellent, thoughtful puzzle game and perfect for anyone looking for a challenge that involves numbers and planning.
Divide by Sheep (Review)
Developer: tinybuild LLC Platforms: iOS & Android Price: $2.99
This gem was released way back in 2015, but it was brought to our attention earlier this year simply because I was asked to review a game we hadn't reviewed before and picked this one. (Because reasons?-ED) Regardless, this is a vibrant and friendly educational puzzle game that uses maths, and is an excellent example of hay-day app store design practices. It's a bit lighter than your usual fair, and some of the puzzles can be brute-forced, but if you're looking for something different and accessible to fill your puzzle needs, then you could do worse than this four year old diamond in the rough.
ELOH (Review)
Developer: Broken Rules Platforms: iOS Universal, Android Price: $2.99
A cheap & cheerful puzzler that's especially great on phones, ELOH is a kinetic game that's colourful, challenging, and possess some great attention to detail. The basic challenge is to position blocks in the right positions to bounce balls into the the correct holes. There's a light rhythmic element to this, and as things get more complicated the blocks take on more creative forms. Some will move along specific axis, for example.
None of the puzzles should take longer than a few minutes to bounce your way through, but there's over eighty of them, so you're looking at a few good hours of gameplay for your minimal upfront investment, and no IAPs to boot!
Where Shadows Slumber (Review)
Developer: Game Revenant Platforms: iOS Universal, Android Price: $4.99
This is an excellent pick for fans of both Monument Valley and Square's GO games. It lacks the variety and the degree of 'cleverness' that those other game's possess, but there's an ingenuity to its design that still does a great job at scratching that itch. The use of light and dark to change the scene in front of you is especially creative.
This is a maze-based puzzle game with intuitive controls and a satisfying gameplay loop. Atmospheric and imaginative, Where Shadows Slumber is a worthy new addition to our 'best of' roster.
Evergarden (Review)
Developer: Flippfly Platforms: iOS Universal Price: $4.99
This recent release is an easy inclusion in our best-of collection not only for its accessible nature, but also because it requires a lot of careful thought and planning. It's more of a high-score puzzler than anything else, but the floral theme and impressive nuances make for some entertaining sessions. Evergarden’s developers estimate that the game will take between four to eight hours to fully explore. After this, it is all about breaking into the global high score tables.
Consequently, it is more of a Tetris high score chaser rather than the type of puzzler where you have to pit your wits against increasingly difficult levels. Unlocking all of the game’s secrets does not require particularly high levels of skill, just the persistence to keep playing and adding to your gem collection.
Infinite West (Review)
Developer: APE-X GAmes Platforms: iOS, Android Price: Free with IAPs
Infinite West is a puzzler that resembles more boardgame than match-3. It’s difficult to find which had a bigger influence on it, the sombre motif of the Ed Porter/Sergio Leone style western or Square Enix Montreal’s critically acclaimed GO series. What’s easy to see is that developers APE-X have a clear reverence of both and have done their best to highlight what makes both strong while adapting it to a unique vision. Achievement hunting and score chasing in Infinite West can throw you in that fervent, 'just one more map' loop because of the solid core concept, and the presence of IAPs is by no means a deal-breaker as you get given a modest amount of freebies anyway.
Lara Croft GO (Review)
Developer: Square Enix Platforms:  iOS, Android Price: $7.49, $4.99
Many a sterling series has seen its reputation dinged by weaker entries. In particular, the sophomore slump, that challenge to recapture what made the original great without slavish repetition. Every member of the GO series has its unique merits and mechanics, but Lara Croft GO stands as the series best. Hitman GO was plagued by odd turn-counter challenges which offer only derivative challenges and pad the playtime without expanding content; Deus Ex GO’s grand plan for daily challenges and community-generated puzzles largely fell flat, but Lara Croft GO along with its two expansions hit the sweet spot of challenge, presentation and pacing. Its focused treasure hunts will keep the best minds, most any mind, really, engaged. (There’s even a maddening hidden-object sidegame to unlock cosmetic goodies if either of those are your wont) Its solutions were exclusive and in many cases immune to the kind of brute-force, mindlessly-spam-moves approach to puzzling, and the whole adventure felt like just that.
Cosmic Express (Review)
Developer: Draknek Limited Platforms: iOS, Android Price: $4.99
Cute little aliens harumph and squidge themselves into unlikely spherical compartments as they commute to their destinations in outer space. In Cosmic Express, the puzzles are pickup-and-deliver, drawing train paths for a route that allows for no cross-overs or doubling-back. The game includes a ton of levels and gets surprisingly difficult (or rather: uncompromising, since difficulty is always a relative, judgmental term) sooner rather than later. Every level feels crystal clear in the post-solved hindsight; nothing is superfluous. Cosmic Express winds its way through the galaxy and wends its way into your heart.
Beglitched
Developer: Alec Thompson Platforms:  iOS Price: $3.99
Beglitched is the story of the Glitch Witch’s sudden disappearance from a computer OS and the player character’s sudden quest to train and replace her. You’ll open ‘files’ to find items, other avatars and programs, and enemies. The game is split between overland mode, which utilizes a minesweeper-like method of divining connecting spaces, and the match-three battle mode. The tone is light and idiosyncratic, and the level design is inspired and gimmicky in a good way. Constraints, properly applied, stimulate creativity. (Or else we’d be without the phrase ‘thinking outside of the box’). Beglitched was released without much fanfare and then subsequently ported to mobile, where it shines even more because of its screen-within-a-screen schtick.
Mini Metro (Review)
Developer: Dinosaur Polo Club Platforms:  iOS, Android Price: $4.99
Logistics makes the world go around. These often break down into math and logic puzzles, even to the point that we have fields dedicated to studying the topology of knots. But maybe none of this matters and you just need to get to work. Well, Mini Metro folds all of this and makes for an amusing, minimalistic puzzle about ordering and sequencing the right trains in the right time to complete the right route. So, programming motion to meet specific goals, and tinkering towards that end. Some puzzles rely unduly on shifts in perspective or tricks of the light to interpret what happens next; not so with Mini Metro. The needs and requirements of the puzzles are always clear, the demand is upfront: all the player has to supply is the way forward, that vital connection which will close the gap and make everything come together.
Framed 2 (Review)
Developer: Loveshack Platforms:  iOS, Android Price: $4.99
The search for the story is the story in Framed 2. Cleverly partitioning and recombining what made the original so great, the follow-up refines and refreshes the initial conceit. Comic book action meets stealth in a cheesy noirish setting. One could even say it...re-frames...what made the original great. Yes, it is probably the shortest and most easily exhausted member of this list but it still has a little extra panache that merits some special attention. There are games to play for months or years, trying to crack their mysteries or refine skills. Then there are those games to consume in an afternoon, letting the whole experience become a unified and unbroken memory. Framed 2 belongs to the latter category, a class of brief puzzlers definitely worth playing.
The Room Three (Review)
Developer: Fireproof Games Platforms:  iOS, Android Price: $3.99
What can be said about The Room series that hasn’t been said before? Its excellent value and construction, or the heaps of critical awards? Not to mention the host of mistaken-identity jokes based on the so-bad-it-is-a-phenomenon film of the same name. Puzzle boxes are a unique tactile treat which shrink a world into a single object and then propel one to open it based on nothing more than curiosity and the hint that something might wait inside. The Room has digitized this experience as well as it could have been, all while making the experience portable and affordable and just a skosh mysterious.
Hall of Fame
As new great puzzle apps get released, we need to rotate our list so that it's kept lean and relevent. Just because a game loses it's spot though, doesn't mean it no longer deserves to be there. Here are some past greats that deserve to be remembered.
Hadean Lands
The Witness
Monument Valley
Monument Valley 2
Death Coming

The Mathematics Of Persuasive Communication.
Given that 1997, the Creative Thinking World Champion has actually been operated by Mind Sports Olympiad. If you have just about any queries regarding wherever and tips on how to work with yellow pages ni - simply click the up coming post,, you'll be able to call us in our web site. However, assuming away from the box," in my viewpoint is actually CERTAINLY NOT an upside-down to look at. I believe merely it is actually even more helpful to presume that there is a box in purchase to get from our convenience zones to remove our dirt, this functions as a trigger, fictional talking. Random Input is actually making use of cement substantives from unassociated fields for hooking up one believing design to one more. Rather than resting in your home as well as watching flicks or even participating in games on a laptop or personal computer, they can currently do all the same things with a tablet or even cell phone. A creative presuming firm (). Just before & After collaborate with companies, professional organizations as well as individuals. Attribute tends to influence if you enable that to, which results in being much more artistic. Design items like paint with moist coatings, catching certain pictures and making a collage etc may draw out the creative brilliant in these children while maintaining all of them occupied. I minimized my writing as a commodity, certainly not as an innovative channel for me, which defeated all purpose from why I determined to write in the top place. Goleman, Daniel, Paul Kaufman as well as Michael Ray (1991) The Innovative Feeling, New York: Penguin, pp. 46-51. Free Brainstorming Training coming from Infinite Innovations Ltd - Know basic and also sophisticated strategies for conceptualizing. This is going to interest find if such strategy games may nurture key and imaginative reasoning in the same way that teambuilding activities were expected to strengthen staff job. Like highly creative atmospheres at Facebook and also Google, the much more inspirational the group structure occasions remain in your office, the much easier this is to break the creative thinking block as well as uncover originalities. A particular noted concerning creative people that costs stating is actually persistence. We in the USA live at a physical drawback to the majority of the world, as our team are actually separated through several miles and also have actually built presumptions concerning the world which oftentimes are improper or even flawed, due partially to our absence of crucial thinking as well as to big degree as a result of our bodily, emotional and also intellectual separation coming from the rest of the world's population. You could engage in creativity by resolving teasers, through becoming aware of and letting go of your beliefs, as well as by means of play-- anything unregulated and also relaxing. With continuously that has to be dedicated to these areas, there is actually a lot less chance to think of the importance from nurturing youngsters's imaginative potentials. After convincing the others, as well as therefore increasing the tips worth, the artistic specific 'markets high' by leaving the suggestion with the other individuals, and also relocates onto creating another idea. This 'breath of fresh air' may re-energize you as well as completely change your reasoning procedure. Nevertheless, while being empirical in science might suggest a design from meticulous fidelity to a suggested procedure from understudying phenomena, in creativity, this describes because whatever globe you generate through your writings must be actually comparable with human adventure sufficient to stimulate preferred psychological reaction in a dimension that everyone who has had a comparable adventure would certainly have the capacity to understand the personalities as well as social circumstance developed in your works. Other critical factors from ingenuity, for example, creative expression, innovative endeavour and also innovative partnership, are actually featured in various other discovering abilities as well as locations. Instances from essential believing capabilities are actually deciphering, analyzing, evaluating, explaining, sequencing, thinking, contrasting, questioning, presuming, hypothesising, assessing, screening as well as generalising. With yard architect training you will definitely be actually learning a skill-set that is exciting to perform as a residing that permits you to become creative while simultaneously letting you be physical. The capacity and also this interaction to connect to as well as collaborate with other people aids trainees to create skills that will be valuable in numerous parts from their adult life, featuring their future works. Routine reasoning benefits every day activities, because you perform the duty without hiring your mind as well as losing electricity on the assuming procedure. That is actually, stargazing and also incubation are very most successful on a venture you have actually presently committed a ton of imaginative attempt in to. This two-day plan pays attention to ways to construct a competitive advantage through cultivating an artistic culture that stimulates collaboration, ideas, and innovation. The concept and create task should as a result be actually a stimulant that delights the detects and gets the creative juices from pupils moving in abundance. Flexible or socratic inquiries are a fantastic way in order to get youngsters's innovative juices flowing. This is indisputably glaring therefore, that to remain above the floods as well as hold guide in his/her industry, every person must, in these opportunities, have to always obtain abilities in self-expression. In an attempt to find a solution to this question I turned to one of the trailblazers of thinking, Edward de Bono, and located that his influential service the Six Assuming Hats ® uses completely to the art and also craft of creating. The road to negative idea is actually effortless to take as well as that often shuts the door to creativity thinking. Aim to have less opportunity restraints for tasks so that children's imaginative juices could move unconfined by a class time clock. If you do not get the programs lingo, after that you can at the very least play games and also discover any type of possible pests that may be taken care of. Content production involves lots of imagination however sometimes our innovation tends to have a short-term sabbatical. The whole-brain thinking style could be made use of for creative thinking and also innovation, mounting troubles and also options, decision-making and also preparation. Like picking which sort of amusement park to visit (e.g. a water or even a zoo playground), these areas connect to the places through which an individual could be innovative (e.g. poems). With technique, on-going creative thinking (the continual investigation, examining and also evaluation that establishes with self-awareness, education and also training) takes place continuously. This system will definitely give your staff members the Whole Human brain ® devices, skill-sets as well as approaches to result in your company's innovative result, whatever their functionality or even role is actually, and also get buy-in for different and brand-new ideas. Amazing and also stunning adolescent gals like Baggage, Chloe, Sasha as well as Yasmin are actually amongst the Bratz that will definitely follow you in the Bratz makeover activities. Creative procedures may be made use of in a strong technique through people operating entirely by themselves. Some people are actually normally even more imaginative compared to others, yet imagination could be reinforced along with strategy. Disruptive thinking has to do with switching things on their scalp, shuffling them approximately, as well as seeing exactly what comes out. This 'sideways' approach from reasoning is much better known as association of ideas, developed by Edward De Bono over 40 years ago. Every person in the world could be imaginative in their personal method, in their own lives. We live in an innovative lifestyle, and even science asks for a continual stream of originalities. Any person geared up with a couple of creative thinking procedures can produce a number of new kinds of office chairs in a married couple hrs. Another main ingredient of the box is the chains from series in our thinking that have ended up being reflexive they have been joined all together for such a long time. Increased finding out offers means to open a fantastic collection of intellectual skill-sets. If you use these calculated methods throughout advanced brainstorming sessions after that you also will be actually extra innovative. While this technique assists our team work in society, that injures creativity due to the fact that real-life concerns are uncertain. Nevertheless, this resistance may typically faint through practices including thruming, breathing physical exercises, and also psychophysiological feedback approaches. With imagination, you can easily think about the best ways to improvise on already existing points.

How Sharing Content Gets You More Visibility and Sales
I’m sure you’ve often heard, content is king. But does that mean that you have to write everything you share? There isn’t enough hours in the day for that!
Content marketing’s role in the continued growth and development of your business cannot be overstated. However, unless you are running a news agency, it is unreasonable to expect that you would be producing nearly all of the content you share on a daily basis.
Doing that would not be productive in the greater scheme of things (as it would prevent you from focusing on other critical parts of your operations). It would also be unrealistic to assume that this can even be done in the first place.
Lastly, because creating original content 100% of the time is likely to make you stick to the same, tried and tested types and methods, it creates a bubble that stops you from seeing what other kinds of content you should be producing for your audience.
This is where content curation comes in. Simply put, content curation involves going through relevant content online that would be of interest to your target audience, then making a list of items and corresponding links that you can share with your social media followers.
The benefit of content curation is twofold: Not only does it keep your online presence fresh by giving you new things to share, but it also provides you with some valuable insight on the topics that are worth writing about.
When used right, content curation can give you enough inspiration and ideas for your own content marketing – and perhaps, even provide a solution to any hurdles you might be encountering in providing services for your clients.
Before we continue, though, I’d like to clarify the difference between content curation and content creation, as the two terms are not interchangeable. Content curation involves sharing content from other sources, while content creation is creating and sharing your own content.
Content curation it’s more important to social selling than you think
Content curation in itself provides some crucial benefits to your social selling efforts. Make time for content curation in your marketing strategy, because sharing content actually helps you:
Build credibility and trust.
There is a tremendous amount of content online and it’s important for you to know what to share with your followers. With content curation, you can improve your credibility and build trust by only sharing verified information – you must be meticulous when it comes to the things you share online.
Of course, it might be challenging for you to sift through all the fluff and rubbish, just to find the real content gems to share. That’s why we employ content curation tools to make the job easier.
Position yourself as an authority in your field.
Content curation can also provide you with the answers to your audience’s most important questions. This will help make you appear to be a true expert at what you do – an industry authority that they can count on.
All you have to do is to learn how to properly choose the content you’ll curate and share. Mastering this simple skill will greatly enhance your reputation.
Maintain consumers’ top-of-mind awareness for more effective social selling.
With content curation, you’ll always have something to share with your followers. Thus, they’ll always be seeing you in their newsfeeds. By providing them with valuable answers to the problems they face, you’ll become the top-of-mind option for them.
With the right mix of visibility, activity, and credibility, your relationships with your customers will ultimately become stronger and more profitable.
Build and grow your sales pipeline.
Of course, when you can fulfill a need or provide useful answers to your target audience’s problems, you are actually helping them to move further along the buyer’s journey, effectively increasing your sales pipeline.
Over time, with consistent sharing of valuable curated content, you’ll see a community grow and include people who share your values and vision — people whom you won’t have a hard time in convincing to convert.
How to increase the results of your content curation
The next question is: With curated content, how can your strategy make you stand out, given that Google has already indexed over 30 trillion web pages to date? How do you shine among the rest, despite such an overwhelming number? Here are a few tips:
Add your own perspective.
Don’t just take existing content out there and share it as is. Put some effort into it by personalizing it. You may simply add quotes or insights from within the curated content, or preferably you can share your perspective on the piece of content you’re sharing.
Engage with your audience – ask questions, respond to comments, and show them your brand’s human side.
It’s also not enough to just keep sharing links to articles with your audience. That’s like starting a conversation without bothering to continue it. Ask them questions so that you can better understand what they think or feel about certain topics that are relevant to you, and respond to their answers to show them that their opinions and input matter to you.
Content curation mostly involves sharing other people’s content, sure, but it doesn’t mean you can’t get creative to have it better suit your needs.
Make sure to have a CTA in place.
Sharing curated content without a proper call to action (CTA) is a missed opportunity to get your audience to take a particular action. Your call to action may be as simple as asking them to comment, to share or to take some other action. People are more likely to take action when you tell them specifically the action you want them to take.
7 tools for effective content curation
Earlier, I mentioned why we employ content curation tools to make the job easier.
Here’s a list of some of my favorite content curation tools:
Feedly
One of my favorite tools, Feedly offers two options when it comes to content curation. You can visit one site at a time, grab the URL, and paste it where you’ll be sharing it. Your other option is news aggregation, which simply involves adding your favorite sources of news to your account. This will enable you to browse these feeds from just one device via Feedly.
Storify
With so much content on the web these days, how can you simplify the process of choosing the right stories and content to share? Are you familiar with Facebook messenger chatbots?
These amazing little tools let you have conversions with your Facebook fans without you even having to be present. This means that even if you’re on vacation, sleeping, or doing other work, you can continue to connect with your fans in a personal and meaningful way.
Pretty cool, huh?
This post is going to walk you through exactly how to create a free Facebook Messenger chatbots without ANY coding. This means ANYONE can create one, literally within minutes.
But first, let’s briefly take a look at WHAT chatbots are, as well as some real-life examples of companies that are using them.
What in the world are chatbots?
Chatbots are essentially software programs that mimic human conversations. Relying either on artificial intelligence or on a set of predetermined rules, they create a kind of back and forth chat experience with your customers or fans.
Chatbots can allow you to accomplish a variety of things, including:
Directing users to your website
Letting customers automatically set up an appointment with you
Answering commonly-asked questions
Buying products from your e-commerce site
Still not wrapping your brain around what a chatbot actually looks like? Let’s take a look at a couple of real-life examples of businesses who are using them.
Kayak: Book flights or hotels via Facebook Messenger
Kayak is just one travel company that uses Facebook Messenger chatbots to make the booking experience SUPER easy for customers. As you can see from the screenshots below, it doesn’t get much easier!
At each step of the process, you can either type in what you’re looking for, or choose from some pre-selected options. This chatbot will take you all the way from researching potential booking options to actually booking a flight or hotel via Facebook Messenger.
Whole Foods: Find a store or look for healthy recipes
Whole Foods chatbot takes a bit of a different approach. Their bot lets you find a local store, or search or browse for recipes. In that way, it takes a bit of a less “salesy” approach.
Interested in trying out a chatbot yourself? CNN’s chatbot is a great place to get your feet wet!
How to create a Facebook Messenger chatbot
I trust that the examples above have whet your appetite for creating a chatbot for your own business.
While it may seem like a highly-technical endeavor, it’s actually possible to create a chatbot without any technical skills…for FREE!
There are two main ways to do this: using Facebook’s response feature, and using a tool like ManyChat. The rest of this post will guide you step-by-step through both of these options so you can set up your own chatbot on Facebook today!
3 steps to setting up Facebook’s response feature
Facebook’s response feature is a great tool for quickly creating a very basic chatbot on your Facebook page. While your bot won’t be nearly as elaborate as the ones above, it will provide a great resource for your fans, and will help set users’ expectations of your page.
1. Find your “Response Assistant” on your Facebook page
From your Facebook page, go to Settings à Messaging.
From here, scroll down to the section titled Response Assistant (underneath General Settings).
In this section, you’ll have a number of options you can customize, however only two of these options are relevant to your Facebook bot: Send Instant Replies to anyone who messages your Page and Show a Messenger Greeting.
2. Set up your Messenger greeting
This is what people will see right after they click on the Message button. This is a message that should make them feel welcome and should encourage them to leave a comment or ask a question.
The main thing you’ll need to do here is simply turn this feature on by turning the slider to Yes.
By default, the standard greeting is “Hi [first name]! Thanks for getting in touch with us on Messenger. Please send us any questions you may have.”
This isn’t a terrible greeting, but I’d recommend changing it something a little more personal and specific to your brand.
3. Set up your instant replies
Next, you’ll want to go to Send Instant Replies to anyone who messages your Page and turn the slider to Yes.
This allows you to specify a message you’d like users to receive after sending you a private message through your page. Within a few seconds of messaging your page, they’ll receive this message…and Facebook even shows three little dots so it looks like you’re actually chatting in real time.
The default message is this: “Thanks for messaging us. We try to be as responsive as possible. We’ll get back to you soon.”
I’d strongly recommend changing this message to something a little less boilerplate!
Besides changing the default text, you can also make some changes by clicking on the Add Personalization link. These changes include:
Person’s first name
Person’s last name
Person’s full name
Your website URL
And that’s it! This very simple process lets you briefly connect with your fans, even when you’re not able to be online.
Looking for something a bit more customizable and advanced, but still FREE and super easy to set up?  Next, let’s look at setting up your own Facebook Messenger chatbot using ManyChat.
4 steps to setting up a chatbot using ManyChat
Don’t worry…This is almost as easy as setting up Instant Replies on Facebook, and it offers tons more features and customization.
 1. Connect your Facebook page in ManyChat
Go to the ManyChat homepage and click on the big Get Started button. This will walk you through the simple process of allowing ManyChat access to your Facebook profile and pages you manage. Don’t worry – it won’t post anything to Facebook without your consent!
Simply click Allow and then select the page you want to want to add your bot to.
2. Go through the ManyChat tutorial
Once ManyChat has access to your page, the system will walk you through a brief tutorial about bots, starting with something that looks like this:
On the second screen, it will give you the option of Sending to Messenger…click it! This will send a sample welcome message to your inbox so you can see exactly what it will look like to anyone who messages you (don’t worry…nothing is set up yet on your page).
This process ends with a screen that looks like this:
3. Set up your first broadcast
Next, you’ll see a screen that looks like this:
Click the button to start setting up your bot. The first “broadcast” is actually the first message people will receive after sending you a message through your page. This message should thank people for contacting you, and ask them to take further action.
You have the option here of including several buttons with specific calls to action (CTA’s). Here are some of the ways you can use these buttons:
Send people to your website
Send people to a dedicated landing page (e.g., for a specific product or piece of content)
Reply with another message
Call a phone number
Depending on what you want to happen, change the title of your button as well as the action that takes place under Do this when user presses the button.
Example: Let’s say I want to direct people to my website. My button title might be Go to website, and under “Do this when user presses the button”, I’d select Open website. You can input any URL you want here.
Example: Let’s say I want to guide people through some more detailed messages. For instance, if I have an e-commerce site, I might want people to be able to select from a few options regarding their order. In that case, my questions might look like this:
Instead of selecting Open website, I would choose Reply With Message to continue the conversation so I can pinpoint exactly what they need.
*Keep in mind button titles must be 20 characters or less, or your text will be in red font (like mine is above!).
This process will likely take a while to set up. I’d encourage you to think about how you can guide people into your funnel (i.e., get their email!) while also providing the info or help they need.
Once you have everything the way you want it, click through to the final step!
4. Get to know your ManyChat dashboard
Anytime you go to ManyChat, you’ll now automatically be directed to your ManyChat dashboard. From here, you’ll be able to edit your messages and settings, as well as receive information about your subscribers.
One of the AMAZING things about using a ManyChat bot is that anyone who messages you has the option of becoming a subscriber. This means you can continue to broadcast messages to these users anytime you want!
You’ll also be able to see the names of your subscribers, and to find out exactly when and how they opted in. This is great information to have so you can replicate funnels that are working well for you!
Final thoughts
I hope this post has given you the motivation and confidence to set up your own chatbot. If you’re short on time, start with a simple Facebook response. Then, once you’re ready to take things up a notch, you can always set up your ManyChat bot with just a little more work and creativity.
I’d love to know: Are you planning to set up your own chatbot? What platform are you going to use? Let us know below!

Storify allows users to search for the top stories on social media sites and choose which ones to turn into stories or use as content. Storify may seem a bit challenging to use at first, though, but it’s certainly worth it.
Pinterest
Through Pinterest, you’ll have access to an astounding amount of visual content: including pictures and infographics. Pinterest is easy to use, which means the process of picking out images and saving them for later use is hassle-free.
Using boards, you can organize the content you’ve picked out; you can keep collecting ideas and then choose the best out of all of them later on.
Facebook
With Facebook’s “Saved links” feature, it has become a useful content curation tool as well. It also helps that a considerable chunk of online users are on Facebook, which means being on the social networking site helps you get a better feel of what your target audience is looking for. This knowledge can subsequently guide you in curating content.

Have alerts set up (on the aforementioned Google Alerts and Owler tools) for the companies you want to do business with.

The Best Puzzle Games on Android & iOS
There’s perhaps no genre synonymous with mobile platforms - especially iPhone or Android devices - than puzzle games.

The Best Puzzle Games on Android & iOS
There’s perhaps no genre synonymous with mobile platforms - especially iPhone or Android devices - than puzzle games.
Alphabear 2
Death Coming (Review)
Developer: SixJoy Platforms:  iOS, Android Price: $1.99
Death Coming is a cute pixel game of Where's Wally twisted in with Final Destination. It's a murder simulator with the player taking the role of an omnipresent servant of Death. You are tasked with offing a certain number of people in a detailed pixel-art scene through manipulating the environment towards various horrible accidents and mayhem. The pixel artwork is awesome, reminiscent of a really great Kairosoft game. Everything is clear and distinct even at a distance, although the game is definitely better sized for tablets and larger phones. The characters are cute and expressive in their tiny little animations. It's a shame the devs didn't trust their core gameplay enough to avoid gumming it up with unnecessary frustrations.
