#fe heroes unit review

hello ! my name is cyril and i've been playing feh on and off since the day of release and have been playing regularly for the past year or so and have gotten really into the meta game.
i understand that it is quite difficult to understand the multi paragraph long descriptions in this game so i intend to make posts going over specific builds or skills or weapons and explaining how they work in practice.
i also want to post banner reviews and builds (especially for grail units) to help players make their faves good.
i'll most definitely answer any ask that's like "hey i really like shez can you show me a build or two for summer m!shez" because i absolutely love making builds. i also understand that not everyone wants to use whatever the most recent units are and may just want to build their faves (i do that too).
i'll also answer any ask that's like "how does kvasir's 'light is time' special /actually/ work" because i actually understand what all the dumb feh jargon means.
i plan to use the tags #feh meta and #fe heroes meta to tag all my posts in which i talk about fire emblem heroes gameplay.
so yeah . follow me if you want to know more about the feh meta or if you want to know how to make your fav units strong !
here's my best build example of "building a fav"
Tumblr media
you can make pretty much any unit good and if their base alt isn't good there's probably a seasonal of sorts that's workable!
have fun and play feh !!!!

Fe engage review. . . . 2!
I've now finished the game! In order to be more fair to the game I'm not going to give it a number rating because that hasn't changed.
I think the story is an active detriment to the game. It's not just that I think it's bad, I also think it's exhausting and annoying. I'm currently replaying the game and skipping every story beat and I'm enjoying myself far more.
Again, the core gameplay is really, really good. Break is a very interesting new feature. Mechanically i also really enjoy the engage rings/units. There's many interesting skills to play around with too, and even if I think it'd be more fun to be able to play around more with skills i can see why it's limited, there's some very strong skills that can enable some real bullshit. Most notable hold out +++
As for characters, i think there's many funny ones, but very few of them are actually fun. Design wise they're really hit or miss. Also turns out Amagaitaro was assistant character designer! I've had enough of him in heroes.
Also turns out this game is very easy to mod! I'm wondering if there's going to be an actual replacing scene? I hope so.

My thoughts on Fire Emblem Three Hopes DLC
I’ve seen a lot of people acting super bummed about no Three Hopes dlc news (mostly on twitter, but my twitter is private because I’m terrified of public twitter) because they expected it to be announced as part of the latest Nintendo direct.
Here’s why I think that there shouldn’t be any concerns:
Fire emblem games, at least, the past several games, have had a DLC. While three houses DLC was announced really close to release, with all four waves releasing spread out over the course of *I believe* about a year and a few months, warriors games don’t operate on the same schedule with DLC.
I’ll use age of calamity as the first example because it’s the most recent warriors game, and was also developed by Koei Techmo:
Age of Calamity released in November of 2020, and the DLC pass wasn’t available for purchase until May of 2021, six months from the release of the game. The first wave didn’t come out until June of that year.
Say that we are going to get a DLC, it would not have been well-received in the last direct because of FE17’s announcement, and that direct was already DLC heavy for other games. It would make more sense if they announced it in a trailer independently on YouTube and twitter (as Nintendo has been doing more frequently for the past year), or, there’s a small possibility that we would get a Nintendo Direct fire emblem focus, either of these things happening in December around that three month time frame. An FE direct would probably also contain news on FE17 to hype it up for the release the following month, and might possibly talk about some Heroes news, a remake, and *maybe* an FE seasons game. Regardless of which of these happen, my guess is we’ll get an announcement late December.
So, what could the DLC contain if we do get one? Well, another thing that adds to my confidence is the fact that the first fire emblem warriors game got a dlc, and three hopes has certainly outperformed it in sales and reviews. The previous game had these features in a dlc that I think could translate to Three Hopes:
• New playable characters that are unlocked by playing a certain map quest. Based on the character dummies in the datamine, I think we could get between 3-4 playable characters, one route exclusive for each one and then one character that’s playable in all routes.
• New character costumes. These operated a little differently because the previous warriors game featured a medley of characters from different universes, not just one continent. I think three hopes would more likely either add the same costumes from the Houses DLC, and/or timeskip houses outfits.
• New support conversations for new playable characters and supports between existing characters. This is my biggest hope for a DLC because supports are one of my favorite parts of the game. I think that whatever new characters become playable would get probably three new conversations each, and that the lords would get probably 3-5 new conversations. I think that the reason it would be reserved to those characters only would be because I can’t imagine any other system for choosing who gets new supports. It wouldn’t make sense for random units to get supports, especially considering the passing of Billy and Ferdinand being considered a pretty important character that would likely get bonus conversations if that were the case.
Who would the lords have new supports with? My most realistic guesses would be this: One support chain with the bonus character respective to their route, one chain for the bonus character in all routes, and one chain with Byleth OR Jeralt.
TL;DR: This is all just speculation, but we’ll probably still get a DLC announcement in late December or early January.

Tbh I'm kinda surprised to read that so many people seem to think of Engage as a better entry than 3H in general. The most comments/reviews I saw were praising the gameplay but were often not so fond of the story and/or the characters, and many think it's a step down from 3H. IMO both games have their flaws, different ones at that. I'm not sure if you can even compare them that much bc I feel they focus on different things, with Engage more leaning towards combat and 3H more an storytelling [1]
[2] and lore. It certainly has more touching moments, especially AM was a real rollercoaster of emotions in part II. That being said I don't think the story or characters in Engage aren't nearly as bad as many make them out to be. It has some anime-cliche moments, is sometimes chaotic and feels a little rushed at some points. It's not mind-blowing or anything new, but it's ok. I do like that Alear is not the typical confident hero, though. Gameplay-wise I like both games but I do prefer the
[3] variety of maps in Engage. Overall I think they are both good games, even if I think Engage won't be as popular in fanworks as 3H still is, or at least not that long. But... even though it's completely off topic... the biggest surprise for me was how popular Griss, at least on AO3, compared to other characters. Wtf? lol but to each their own I guess :) Do you have any favorites or even ships from this game?
I think it's because a lot of reviews are explicitly interested in gameplay over story/characters. Usually it's the diehard fans who regularly post about FE content who have mixed feelings on it that are different between gameplay/story. I've definitely seen some fans talk about not enjoying the story as much as Houses', and those reviews who balance their reviews on gameplay/story seem to always be the ones YT regularly recommends to me since they post about FE so often.
Personally I don't think even the gameplay is extremely comparable because they have vastly different combat concepts. Generally I'd say the two games come down to personal preference. I don't think Engage's gameplay is particularly bad so much as it just isn't as fun for me. It's definitely a bit convoluted though, but so was Houses' (like, I rarely used gambits or battalions because of all the menus and I did just fine in gameplay without paying much attention to those).
Both of them honestly just also have too much to do outside of the main content. It's fine not to have it be totally linear, but it's not an experience like Fates where you get some bonuses really quick and get to take a break from the maps. In PoR you get a break and get to manage your units and go through conversations separate from supports and it's a really simple few menus that are easy to get through every chapter. Houses and Engage both have way too much going on outside of main battles and that exhausted me pretty fast. Too much to do, too many menus, too much going on in the maps... All that extra stuff is tiring for me and I just play the games very simply lol. Neither was better than the other for me, honestly.
The characters are a bit bland sometimes, but they're not like, horrendous lol. Some reviews seem to insist they're like, the worst thing FE has ever done with its characters. It wasn't that bad, but I do get bored of them sometimes (mainly because all their conversations have to do with the same things and you don't really learn much about the characters from them).
But then, like I've said before, as a hardcore AM fan, Sylvain and Felix were better in their supports than in the main story because they had a similar problem in the main story. All their lines were the same old stuff and it was tiring that they were clearly better characters than the main story dialogue would give them credit for. Houses definitely had a bit of a similar problem. Bernadetta and Marianne were also pretty one-note characters, though Marianne progressed a bit. Raphael was also very one note, and so was Caspar. See what I mean lol, Engage didn't start this trend. Houses, Fates and Awakening had similar problems, where most of its cast didn't have much depth.
I think Alear didn't have much of an effect on me because FE4 is my favorite game and FE5 is my fourth favorite, and both those games had lords with an extreme lack of confidence. FE5 forget it, my poor baby boy literally locked himself in a room because of a "bad decision" (i hate you august and you were dragon dad's biggest mistake im sorry dragon dad but it's true) that got someone killed and needed a whole paragraphs-long pep talk. He's my favorite lord next to Ike and Dimitri, because they're very outside of the traditional super kind, let's save everyone and be nice people forever, type of lord. They're all angry, revenge driven people, and also people who refuse to accept any kind of injustice and don't accept bullshit. They're very kind, but equally balanced imo. It's not like Marth who is just waaay too far on the sliding scale of kindness lol. Ike would feed a hungry homeless person (he did, canonically, pre-story and during the story) while stabbing some villain at the same exact time and being like 🤷 well you were a piece of shit. Good for my favorite lords because they'd all do that LOL. My scared baby boy will stab you in FE5, but in FE4 his promoted class allows him to wield all weapons in the game except holy weapons and dark magic, so he's a good contender for "do not piss off". :D
I'm probably the only person willing to defend the maps in Houses lol. Since it's a story from different perspectives but it's the same story, it makes sense to reuse the maps. Some of them are unique depending on if you visit that location in another route or not, but if the characters have to visit a certain location in the story, you get the same map so I don't actually mind that. It's not like FE8 where the split routes led the main characters on different paths to reunite (again lol), but a story that has the characters going through the same outlets to reach their destinations.
Somehow I'm not surprised by Griss being super popular since it's one of those whacky unexpected fandom things lol. He's unique at least, and I guess people probably find him very funny. Wouldn't be surprised if it's like a me-and-Jarod thing lol.
My favorite character overall is Alfred, and good for him for staying my favorite from his first trailer appearance to the end of the whole game lol. ALSO good for him for having the only one of two explicitly romantic endings, and you could even argue Kagetsu uses a lot of romantic terminology on the regular anyway so it comes off as more normal for him, versus having a character who isn't normally like that just toss platonic love out the window immediately and being the only one to do it!
Other than him I guess I'd say Diamant and Ivy are my other favorites, and Jean, Yunaka and Panette are below them. Good for Engage for giving me favorites who are equally male and female lol, usually my favorites are all male because the writing for women in fictional media generally just sucks.
Am I the only one who would consider Jean a favorite? Probably lol, nobody seems to like him. Poor boy.
Ships I'd say are Diamant/Alfred as my top one, Alfred/Alear as my equally top one (really I think it's the player pandering that might put it below Diamant/Alfred? It'd be a LOT cuter if it wasn't so player-directed), then some assorted ones would be Diamant/Ivy, a little bit Fogado/Yunaka, and a tiiiny bit Louis/Chloe. ...Oh also Emblem DimiClaude. >:D You weren't getting out of that one!

Fire Emblem Heroes Unit Review: Brave Ephraim
“What surprises me is this: how little I am surprised by being in a world I know nothing about. All those voices, the ones that called out for me... Perhaps that's why.”
Tumblr media
Overview
The 2nd Place winner of the Male Division for CYL 2 comes ARMOR marching in with not only a new weapon and a set of kick-ass armor, but a new weapon that is just, do I dare say it, DISGUSTING! Brave Ephraim’s kit is fantastic for any player of Heroes, whether you’re just starting out or a long-time player, alongside his stats that are well rounded for any team (armor or mixed). Surely, Ephraim has made his fans and his father very proud.
Stats and Skills
Default Stats: 46/38/27/37/26 (Honestly, any IV’s will work for Brave Ephraim, though +Atk or +Def are his best boons while -Spd is the throw away stat due to Garm’s effect)
Brave Ephraim’s personal weapon is one of the Sacred Twins’ weapons from Grado: Garm. It grants him +3 to his already high attack, so even if you happen to pull a -Atk Ephraim, Garm resets it back to his high default 38. The noteworthy effect that makes Ephraim super busted and makes him very different compared to the other green armors (especially Hector) is that whenever Ephraim receives a boost from a Rally, Hone, or Armor March/Armor Boots, he is guaranteed a follow-up attack regardless on what phase he’s in! Ephraim doesn’t need to waste his B-Slot on either Bold/Vengeful Fighter because Garm has got him covered so long as the conditions are met, which is very easy to pull off.
Now let’s get to his base kit which is basically PERFECT for any player. His default special is Draconic Aura, and thanks to his high attack, it’s going to hurt a lot. His A-Slot is Close Defense 3, which boosts his already high defense and gives his resistance an extra 6 whenever he gets attacked.
His B-Slot is a new skill called Special Fighter 3, which at the time of writing, only Brave Ephraim has and is the best user of this skill. Basically, it prevents the foe’s special cooldown from going down (unless by special skills such as Breath or Blade), whereas the user’s special cooldown goes down by 2 instead of the usual 1. So this means Ephraim can use specials with longer special charges such as Ignis, Dragon Fang, and especially Aether! This works if the user’s HP is higher than/equal to 50%, and considering this is Ephraim and he has Garm, great defenses, and an A-Slot that increases his defenses, he’s not letting this effect die on him very soon.
His C-Slot is Armor March 3, which fittingly, goes well with Garm and for any of his Armor allies. Honestly, all you need is Swap and BOOM! Brave Ephraim is ready to go!
Counters and Allies
Armorslaying weapons can put a huge dent on Brave Ephraim, especially Caeda thanks to her Wing Sword, and the Armorsmasher+ with the special refinement that ignores any buffs from an armored unit. Axebreaker cancels out Garm’s effect, so strong users with that skill can wipe him out. And despite Ephraim’s defense, strong Red units such as Ayra, Tiki (any red variation), and Karla can pierce through the tough defenses.
Of course Brave Ephraim would love some armor allies as his skills aid both himself in Garm and to others thanks to Armor March 3. Funnily, Brave Hector and Brave Ephraim work very well together (coincidence?), though Legendary Tiki can help by taking out the red dragons (even Garon despite him canceling out Dragon slaying effects). Outside of Armor Emblem, any ally that provides buffs can help, and any Guidance users will help in, especially Tana with her new refined weapon giving her a boost in Atk/Spd by 4. What do you mean Innes won’t be happy when he hears about this?
Recommended Skills
Assist: Swap, Pivot, Rallies
Specials: Draconic Aura, Dragon Fang, Bonfire, Ignis, Aether
A-Slot: Close Defense 3, Distant Counter, Brazen Skills, Death Blow 3/4
B-Slot: Special Fighter 3
C-Slot: Armor March 3, Hones/Tactics/Waves, Drives/Wards/Goads
Sacred Seal: Close Defense 3, Distant Defense 3, Attack +3, Brazen Atk/Res 3, Armored Boots (outside of Armor Emblem)

Analysis
Chad arrives alongside formidable allies as a F2P friendly colorless dagger in the 3-4* summoning pool. While his skills are nothing new his stat line does leave him with interesting options when it comes to how he should be built.
At first glance it seems that Chad fills in the role of so many daggers before him as a fast, supportive ranged unit. His offenses start at 30/37 Atk/Spd allowing Chad to double opponents easily with investment. His defenses on the other hand leave him with enough to tank a hit (but not much more than that) starting at 26/23 Def/Res. Looks can be deceiving however as much of Chad’s weaknesses are addressed in his base kit. Rogue Dagger will, after attacking or being attacked, grant Def/Res+6 to Chad and any nearby allies while ploying his opponent and any enemies within 2 spaces for -6 Def/Res. Stack this on top of his default Spd Smoke and Chad will essentially ploy three different stats on his enemies while giving his team the advantage. In order for this to come into play however Chad will have to initiate against his opponents. Picking his battles will no doubt be the number one thing to consider when using Chad. His native Escape Route gives him some options when it comes to buffing his allies or picking his enemies but this skill will not activate until he’s at 50% of his base HP or less. At that level of health it’s doubtful that Chad will survive any combat he gets himself into without help.
Whether used to support his team or as an offensive unit himself Chad will prove his worth so long as he picks his battles carefully.

Builds
Budget:
Tumblr media
Chad can suffice with some minimal investment. For the most part however it is best to forgo his native B skill for a different one.
The set on the left kits Chad out to be a sure counter against sword opponents. Swordbreaker will ensure that Chad can safely take fights against powerful sword opponents. Should his sword wielding foe be faster than him Swordbreaker will negate that speed difference and grant Chad the advantage. After combat he will then ploy any opponents within 2 spaces for Atk/Spd -7 and Def/Res -6 for the duration of their next actions. These ploys could easily prove to be the difference between winning a fight and losing one. Swift Sparrow will grant him a boost when initiating combat pushing his offenses to 47/41 Atk/Spd without any further buffs.
The set on the right opts for a similar goal but instead improves Chad’s own stats. Darting Blow grants +6 Spd while Sturdy Blow grants Atk/Def +4 if Chad initiates a fight. This pushes his stats up to 47/43/30 Atk/Spd/Def while in combat with no further buffs. Then, after combat, he gains a buff of Def/Res +6 to his defenses making him deceptively tankier than one would believe and smokes his opponents for -7 Spd. He may then be escorted back to safety by an ally or danced to make use of his newly acquired buffs. Because of his high Spd we can afford to use Desperation to allow Chad to make his follow-up attack before his opponent can counterattack.
Chad’s seal options include but aren’t limited to: Atk+3, Spd+3, Atk/Spd 2, Blow skills, Bond skills, Brazen skills, Smoke skills, Flashing Blade, Quickened Pulse and Phantom Spd.
Offensive:
Tumblr media
Chad is a very capable offensive dagger and can improve on his role as a support unit.
The set on the left kits him out to be a tried and true offensive dagger. He runs a fairly standard Life and Death/Desperation setup in combination with his default C skill and Darting Blow. Reaching an incredibly 51 Spd with no further buffs, Chad will prove dangerous to bait if the opponent fails to kill him in one shot as he will activate Moonbow on retaliation. To further prevent this from happening we run The Cleaner+, which will grant a bonus to Chad’s Atk based on the foe’s bonuses in combat. So, for example, if Chad’s opponent is buffed for +6 Atk, Chad adds +6 to his Atk while in combat. Think of it like a Blade tome buff that is based on his opponent’s buffs versus his own.
The set on the right on the other hand leans into his supportive role. Seeing as how Chad is an incredibly fast dagger unit, we use this fact in our favor to not only ploy opponents of their stats but to also get some chip damage in. The key here is the use of Windsweep. So long as Chad has 1 more Spd than his sword, lance, axe, beast, dagger or bow opponent he will essentially get a free hit against them. Darting Blow will help us in this task pushing his Spd up to 48 with no further buffs. This makes it difficult if not impossible to avoid this free hit which will result in Chad’s opponent and enemies within two spaces being ployed for -6 Atk/Spd/Def/Res. The enemies within two spaces will then also take 14 damage due to the build displayed running double Savage Blow. Since we aren’t inherently worried about doing as much damage as possible we can afford to run higher cooldown specials such as Luna to help chip the defenses of bulkier opponents. Windsweep may also be swapped for Watersweep if countering Dragons/Magic users is a higher priority than melee opponents.
High Investment:
Tumblr media
Chad can serve multiple roles on a team and is not necessarily confined to a single phase. This is especially proven true in terms of high investment. The following sets are best intended for those who plan on fully investing in Chad.
We take advantage of Chad’s Def superboon in the set on the left to run an enemy phase setup. Goodie Boot will boost Chad’s Def/Res x2 based on how many allies are near him for a max total of +6 Def/Res while in-combat. Because we’ll want to be close to allies we can run ally-reliant skills. Atk/Res Bond will grant Atk/Res +5 to Chad if he is adjacent to an ally while Joint Hone Def will grant Def+5 if next to an ally at the start of his turn. This is then further combined with Blue Flame, which will deal 25 pure damage to an opponent if Chad is again next to an ally when it activates. Null Follow-Up meanwhile protects him from skills such as Bold Fighter, Desperation, and Daggerbreaker. With all of his skills active, Chad reaches 51/41/46/42 Atk/Spd/Def/Res while in-combat.
The set on the right meanwhile combines different Blow skills to make Chad a dangerous player phase force. Sturdy Impact will grant Chad Atk+6 and Def +10 when initiating combat and also prevent his foe from making a follow-up attack at the same time. Tropical Treats will then grant Atk/Res+4 while in-combat so long as he has a buff applied to him whether from a self buff, hone or rally. We can grant Chad his dagger’s effect by running Atk/Res Oath which grants Atk/Res +5 to himself and any adjacent allies. This also stacks nicely with his in-combat buffs. Lull Spd/Def then ensures that not only Chad doubles the majority of his opponents but also softens them up for him, nullifying any buffs the enemy has to Spd/Def and ploying them for Spd/Def -3. With all his skills active, Chad reaches 66/45/40/36 Atk/Spd/Def/Res while in-combat.

Entry 77: The Minerva Pegasus Knight Trading Card DLC Rabbit Hole
So, last time I went over all the Grand Hero battle classes, right? I thought so too, until I was browsing around the FE wiki for this Entry. They had one class that I didn’t know about that brought me down a weird rabbit hole.
Fire Emblem has a trading card game called Fire Emblem 0 (Cipher). I know next to nothing about it, and no, I don’t know why the name is styled like that. Apparently, there was a Japan-exclusive DLC that allowed you to get three characters that was connected to the TCG. I do not know how this worked, because there is next to no information online about this. At least, next to know information on American websites. The three characters were Marth, a version of Lucina wearing her butterfly mask, and Minerva. Marth and Lucina were presumably a Lodestar and Great Lord respectively, while Minerva was a Pegasus Knight.
The thing is, Pegasus Knights aren’t in Fates. Sky Knights replaced them. But no, I’ve seen footage of this DLC, Minerva was a Pegasus Knight. Despite the fact that Minerva was a Wyvern Lord in the Archanea games. She also had a unique design, different from her standard design and the standard Sky Knight design that resembles the Pegasus Knights from Shadow Dragon. This class can only use Lances and learns the skills Speed +2, Relief, Rally Speed, and Warding Blow, which are the Pegasus Knight skills from Awakening, a game Minerva did not appear in, and the Falcon Knight skills from Fates.
I don’t know why they did this, every new piece of information I learn confuses me more, but yeah, new Class Profile.
Actually, there are a few other classes I haven’t mentioned. The Lancer class, which is featured in this game as Spear Fighters, is called Lancer for generic Nohrian troops; You can capture Lancers, but they don't learn skills and have terrible growths. The classes Lord, Cleric, and Myrmidon from Awakening appear in DLC chapters, but don't learn skills or have growth rates. Faceless, Stoneborn, and Automaton are enemy monster classes, although the latter two can appear in your castle as ally units. Lilith has her own class called Astral Dragon, which has been described before. Finally, the classes Nohrian King, Blight Dragon, Empty Vessel, and Silent Dragon are used for late-game bosses. Strangely, Conquest's final boss uses a normal playable class.
And with that, I have talked about every class in this game, assuming there isn’t like some secret Cypher DLC that allows you to recruit Sanaki from Radiant Dawn but she’s a Mage for some reason or some shit like that.
Support: Niles/Peri
C: Peri, having heard Niles is mean, asks him to insult her. Niles says no because he only insults people who desrve it and somehow he is unaware of Peri's many faults. Peri also asks if he ever broke into her house, which Niles can't remember.
B: Niles remembers that he broke into Peri's house when she was a child because he heard the owned a valuable doll that murdered people, but didn't find it.
A: Niles realizes that Peri was the murder doll, or rather that rumor started because she killed a different servant every day. Also her father watched. What the fuck.
S: Niles asks if he can steal Peri again.
Review: Goddamn Peri is the worst. Honetly she’s kinda fun in this one, but Jesus she is way too evil to fit into this game. It’s like if Dennis Reynolds was a main character on Parks and Rec and still made the serial killer jokes. Setting my distaste for Peri aside, the idea of Peri and Niles having a connected backstory is interesting, but them never meeting before the game makes it meaningless.
Support: Arthur/Charlotte
C: Charlotte hits on Arthur, but he can sense something isn't right.
B: Arthur, after seeing Charlotte in battle, says she doesn't need his protection. Charlotte lies and says she was only good in battle because of enemy magic, a lie so bad that only an idiot would believe it. Arthur believes her.
A: Arthur asks Charlotte to tell him the truth. Charlotte admits she doesn't need Arthur to protect her, but Arthur doesn't mind because she's a dependable companion. S: Arthur marries Charlotte.
Review: Arthur has high WIS low INT. Jokes aside this one was fine but forgettable.
Support: Benny/Nyx
C: Benny offers Nyx candy because he thinks she's a child. It is awkward.
B: Benny offers to help Nyx get things from high shelves. Nyx says she knows how to deal with her curse, leading to a discussion of the fact that her curse is a punishment.
A: Benny offers to help anyway because Nyx is his ally.
S: Nyx tries to break her curse so she can get together with Benny.
Review: Something about how this one is structured is really bland and awkward.
Support: Camilla/Xander
C: Camilla is late to a war council meeting because she's busy consoling Corrin. Camilla points out that she takes care of the younger siblings, while Xander handles the war stuff.
B: Xander decides to prove that he actually cares about his family. Camilla quizzes him on favorite foods, which he aces.
A: Xander acknowledges that he keeps a distance from his younger siblings because he needs to be an unapproachable, stern prince.
Review: A fantastic Support. Xander distancing himself from the family from his duties, but still clearly loving them, is a great piece of writing.
Conquest Chapter 26: Treason
Garon heads into the throne room, alone, to consult Anankos. He laughs evilly about having conquered the entire world. By the entire world, he means two small countries. While the royals are waiting, Iago attacks Moron. Iago reveals that he knows Hinoka is still alive, meaning Moron has committed treason and thus deserves death. Naturally, Iago didn’t tell this to Garon and instead decided to murder one of his children without permission, because Iago is also dumb.
Xander steps in and challenges Iago to a duel, hoping to rid Nohr of that slimy dishonorable douchebag. Leo, Camilla, and Elise also join in and Xander decides to frame Iago’s death on the remaining Hoshidan rebels. Which is a war crime.
The battle begins, with Moron vowing to defeat Iago and Hans for their war crimes and take back Nohr. This map has our army marching through the Hoshidan castle, fighting our way to Iago as he snipes us from long range with Staves that he shouldn’t be able to use. Also Hans is there I guess; he died in a single hit from Elise.
After being defeated, Iago begs for mercy, saying that he was only following Garon’s orders. Maybe we should kill Garon too, that’s an idea. Leo kills Iago, because Leo is the one who always gets tasked with executing people for some reason. Xander proudly says that that was the final battle, not knowing that there are two more chapters
Now that Hoshido has been captured, thousands of people have died, and Ryoma committed seppuku, Moron finally remembers to tell everyone that Garon is a sludge monster. That’s why he needs to die. Because he isn’t human. Not because of the mass murder, if he wasn’t a sludge monster that would be okay I guess. This is a dumb plotline that implies everyone would be okay with war crimes if Garon wasn’t a sludge monster.

Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War Review
It took months for me to complete, but at least I can finally say that I have played this game. Of all the older Fire Emblem games (pre-3DS era), this is the one that I have wanted to play the most and whose story intrigued me the most. It is, probably, now my favorite game in the franchise, and this review is the really, really long why.
Gameplay/Story Integration
Before I even mention the story, it’s important to address the mechanics that both make this game a wonderful experience of gameplay/story integration...and make it rather annoying, depending on your perspective. This game’s greatest flaws are also its greatest strengths, which makes me glad that it was produced so long ago. I still love modern games, and most have come a long way in making the player experience much less painstaking to an annoying degree, but there is also a lot of charm in older games like Genealogy, where the player is definitely made to suffer a little.
Like all Fire Emblem games, Genealogy is about a war involving dragons, invading nations, and legendary weapons. Unlike most Fire Emblem games, this one went out of its way to make the player feel like they are embarking on a campaign across a continent, spanning multiple years of nonstop fighting and traveling. Most FE games choose to focus on one battle per chapter, with the story segments in between explaining how we progressed from point A to point B. Genealogy chooses instead to make you move your entire frontline across a HUGE map, from castle to castle, crossing distances that span countries.
It’s a unique feature of this game, and I loved it, no matter how annoying it got to lug the army from the south to the north and back down again to defend a previous position from attack. It made you feel actively engaged in the progression of the conflict, made it easy to track your journey back to the beginning and see just how far you traveled. The tedium makes it feel, in the best way a mere video game can, more realistic.
By far one of the weirder and more annoying aspects of the game is the inability for units to trade money and goods between each other. In most games, there is a single pool of money and anyone in the party who purchases an item draws from that fund. In Genealogy, each unit has his/her own money, which cannot be shared with another unless that person is a spouse or the resident thief. This does make some sense because your army is basically a volunteer army built from people of multiple nationalities and affiliations. Many make it clear they’re here to lend a hand, not join you forever, so it makes sense that they don’t all fork over their money for the army to use. Still makes this part of the game annoying if you are micromanaging the army.
It was fairly difficult getting used to this game’s mechanics, which are way, WAY different from any other in the franchise. But I value the attempts made to integrate story with gameplay (another example is the ability to fix/repair broken or damaged weapons for a price, instead of them disappearing into the ether) far more over the frustration it caused me along the way.
Story
Finally, the actual story! **Spoilers onward**
The story of this game is initially no different from any other Fire Emblem game, and it’s similar to many fantasy stories. A main character’s homeland is invaded by the bad guys, main character fights back and eventually leads a resistance force against the masterminds behind the conflict.
Genealogy turns that story progression on its head in the first half, then plays it straight in the second half. The second half is undoubtedly the weaker of the two, but it’s not bad - just not quite as interesting compared to the absolute curveball the first half throws at you.
I don’t think I’ve ever played a game that had the guts to do what this game does. The closest example is Aerith from FFVII, but at least that was one character, not the entire playable cast. This game would be devastating if it had more room to develop its characters. Honestly, it does a really good job with the limited “screentime” its characters get. Most of them are given reasons for joining that are sensible enough. The game makes sure to lay out the stakes and consequences of the choices the characters make (at least in the first half).
I think one of the reasons I like it so much is that it makes sure you feel the heavy costs of a conflict like the one unfolding in the game. It makes you feel the loss, and not only through the permadeath mechanic. Let’s be real, many players reset if they lose a unit. But even if you reset, or just are good at the game and don’t get anyone killed, the game still makes sure you see the consequences of war.
Actually, it makes you see the consequences of a simple, well-intentioned action. If makes you see how a conflict can quickly snowball out of one man’s control.
The second half of the game is, admittedly, way more typical and less impactful. The world is suffering because of the failure of the first cast to resolve the conflict, so now it’s up to the main cast’s children to finish it.
There are interesting tidbits revealed randomly and at the very end that give the story more life, so I wish they would’ve utilized these parts a little more.
Characters
A lot of people find Sigurd, part 1′s main character, kind of boring. And that’s fair. He’s a typical noble knight, very loyal and an all around good person. And he falls in love at first sight. His ultimate flaw is...well, that he is a bit too trusting or just lacks foresight.
Which is all true of our main character. But he’s also a good example of a tragic hero. His greatest strengths are his nobility and sense of justice. He starts the story only aiming to rescue a childhood friend from the invaders who have kidnapped her. But those are the same things that lead him far from home, on a campaign that snowballs out of his control and soon comes to look very much like a man working on conquering the continent, putting him in conflict with the major power on said continent who doesn’t like what he sees is happening.
He also falls into a love that will lead to disaster, so. Very tragic hero-y of him.
But I lowkey love Sigurd. I love that moment he looks back and realizes oh shit, he’s way in over his head but he literally can’t turn back anymore. The only way out is forward.
I think Seliph, Sigurd’s son, is largely forgettable. The revelation at the end, and implication that he hasn’t truly chosen his own path this whole time but was led down it was a plot point I wish was expanded on, as well as his own feelings about it all. But it kind of fits that he...doesn’t have much substance to him. In the end, he really feels like a pawn, which makes that lofty title he later gains feel all the stranger in retrospect.
This game is good at making its characters feel small in the larger setting of its world. I appreciate that.
It has a large and largely forgettable cast of named enemies and npcs. I think it helps make the world feel lived in, rather than an empty place run by like 20 people. idk, I’d rather the world feel more realistic than every named character standing out like a sore thumb.
The game gives you a lot of units, some more memorable than others. This is where a remake could really help flesh out these characters, but I felt that in most cases their motivations and personalities were realistic and believable. The downside, on the gameplay side, is that mounted units really do dominate this game. The few units on foot that stand out are the ones with outstanding performance in one aspect or another, while the rest just fall by the wayside since it can be so difficult to get them to join the action.
However, I am a boring person who loves mounted units, so. I was very happy.
Overall
As you can tell, I loved this game. It can be a bit janky in some aspects, but it’s definitely one of the more adventurous of FE games (seeing as it came out before the series really settled on a “style”). It’s not a game for beginners, I would say, given its somewhat odd mechanics that aren’t explained very well from the outset. The pacing can be feel rather long and arduous, which is on purpose, but also keeping in mind that you can save at the start of every turn - it wasn’t designed for you to bang out a chapter in a single sitting but come back to chip away at your progress.

Aaand another banner review!
As many as you know, Awakening may be my least favourite FE game (of the ones I played), but still, there are some good things. This time we have a mix, and some stuff from Heroes itself:
First of all, they put a Heroes character there. I'm glad this book doesn't interest me as much as book II, otherwise I would have felt forced to spend orbs. Which wouldn't have been that bad, considering the tickets.
Mirabilis may be the least interesting of the new OCs for me, so I don't feel bad because she isn't free. Also, she doesn't "steal" a Mythic month for herself, nor a spot for an Awakening character, because we still have six!
In general, they didn't put any effort with skills. Say'ri perhaps could be a powercrept version of my Lloyd build? I don't know. So it's a matter of pulling if you really like the characters.
They gave us the wrong Awakening Anna. Does this mean that she'll be in Farfetched? Her supports weren't bad. I love Fjorm, and I can't stop seeing Naesala as an art dealer since someone commented that in Youtube. Still, I understand that they didn't want to do the same type of unit as Gangrel, even if he's free.
Speaking of which, I don't know if he's worth it. He seems interesting to build (like Kronya) but I'll wait for a while. His art fortunetely ddidn't get as messed up as Iago's, but the both of them look like Disney villains and now I want to support them.
Say'ri's supports were good... For Kiria, which is good because she's the third TMS character that calls my attention. While Say'ri herself felt like a nice comrade in my gameplay, her supports were a bit boring. While the lore of Chon'sin was interesting, it should have been given in the chapters themselves, so the supports would've had more interactions based on her personality.
Mustafa! I could spend much time speaking about his addition in Heroes. Where do I begin? I'm happy! He made a good impact for me in the game, even if he was just there for a chapter. I'm glad that he's the demoted unit (of course his skills leave me sad) because he's easier to get in the future. And a moustache and a beard accessory! And of course Ylgr would be the best one to understand him! And... They did it! They gave Chrom the development that he lacked in his own game! Same as they gave Oboro maturity in Forrest's supports.
And Emmeryn! I'm really glad that she got here, as a free unit, and didn't get the Elice treatment (even if the unit is super cute). I guessed that the quests would be either like Ninian's (one copy of a 5* unit) or like Kaze's (optional promotion, but one more copy), both options were alright. But her supports were a bit disappointing for me. I'm glad to see Mikoto and other characters, but Emm deserved to interact with her siblings (specially Lissa because she seems forgotten) or Gangrel. Fortunately the main FB plot had her being herself, and it's nice.
So, in general, while the banner itself wasn't enough to make me spend orbs, there are things that make me have hope. I'm still looking forward to seeing Vaike, Flavia, Basilio or Gregor.
But given how we've had some characters teased in Lost Lore before being brought to Heroes, I'm saying more. Hans from Fates is quite probable to appear as a GHB unit when we have more banners. But the one I truly want is Lorenz! Not the 3H one, but the general of Grust from Archanea series. Caeda and Ogma deserve to see him once again. And I wouldn't be opposed to having an Ogma (or Barst) alt, now that I mention him. Or seeing Cord... Not the time to be thirsty, heh.
Lastly, the plot of Heroes has suddenly become interesting. Sharena finally has protagonism! A shame they almost harmed best girl with magical incest, but I want to see what the plot brings to us. Triandra got confirmed to be Peony's sis (is she Sharena though or...? I'm confused) and Plumeria got background. Fortunately there's a little important change between Freyja and other villains. She doesn't seem exactly like Sonia, Garon, Travant or Hel, but more like Eremiya, from New Mystery. Which supports a further Archanea banner, this time with less alts, I hope.
Wow, this came longer than expected.

Katelyn Darrow and Andrea Smith address climate change, Coviid-19, and the ecology effects of what’s happening in our world. Katelyn shares that a positive result of Covid-19 has been that nature is beginning to heal itself. Firefighter, storyteller, and author Hersch Wilson talks about how to stay safe during these horrendous fires and other disasters in the USA. His book Firefighter Zen tackles the value of life. Life is short, grab it, and live for today. He advises rising above the calamities to find joy in daily living because everyone suffers. Learn to be brave, asking oneself “what is the bravest thing we can do?” Hersch encourages us to stop the negative self-talk about failing. His mantra is to help people through the confusion and suffering. It is in service to others that we find fulfillment and inner peace.
Andrea, a competitive swimmer and water baby, talks about how climate change is altering patterns of weather and water around the world, causing shortages and droughts in some areas and floods in others. Saving our oceans must be a priority. Both hosts advocate reducing our carbon footprint and nurturing Mother Nature. Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones Unit Review
Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones Unit Review
The following is a guide discussing the strengths, weaknesses and utility of the playable characters in Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones. Popularly considered to be the easiest Fire Emblem game before awakening, the Sacred Stones allows for grinding experience and money, allowing new players a softer barrier to entry. In addition, its challenge mode and alternate routes provides series veterans with a meaty challenge.
Units in Order of Appearance (Eirika’s Route):
Eirika: The main heroine of the Sacred Stones and likely your main unit throughout, Eirika is a Lord that has the stats of a Myrmidon: High Skill, Speed, and Luck growths, Low Defense, Resistance and HP growth. Eirika is fairly useful throughout her route, as non-mounted sword users are relatively rare in the early part of the game. Upon promotion to a Great Lord, she gets a mount, giving her remarkable reach. Overall, Eirika will prove a vital part of the team in the late game, provided you can keep her alive.
Seth: Imagine FE: Conquest Gunther, but with excellent growths and joining on mission 1. That’s Seth in Sacred Stones. He’s a pre-promoted unit with great stats and pretty great growths as well. He can stomp out any enemy in the early game and can remain relevant in the late game. While he likely won’t be as good as other promoted cavaliers, Seth can and will remain relevant throughout.
Franz: You are, unfortunately, showered with mounted units throughout the game, meaning that some units may get lost n the background. Franz comes early and has the benefit of being balanced in stats and growths. This means the player can tailor him to any given cavalier role. Franz has about 40-50% growths in every stat, save for Defense and Resistance, which are a bit lower. As a Paladin, Franz becomes more defensive, allowing him to patch-up his low Defense and Resistance growths. As a Great Knight, Franz becomes an offensive powerhouse, attacking with all three physical weapons. I recommend Franz above the other Cavaliers, as his versatility will prove valuable in the late game when enemies are strong and plentiful.
Gilliam: Gilliam is the premiere defensive tank in the game. He has great Defense and HP growths, allowing him to tank hits early and grow into an unstoppable wall in the late game. There’s little else for me to say about Gilliam, as he exists solely for this role. General or Great Knight, Gilliam will take hits and kick ass regardless.
Vanessa: Vanessa is the first flying unit in the game, and fits the Florina/Shanna/Sumia archetype; a weak, early game unit with remarkable growths and potential. Vanessa has fantastic Speed, Skill and Luck growth, as well as excellent mobility thanks to her flying status. Her defenses and HP are low, so she should be handled with care. Upon promotion, she can either become a Falcon Knight, playing to her stat strengths and giving her access to swords, or a Wyvern Knight, allowing her to break through enemy lines. I recommend the Falcon Knight promotion, as Wyvern units are a bit underpowered in this game.
Moulder: Eh…Moulder is hindered throughout the game by a low Magic stat, which, for a Healer/Sage/Bishop, is a very bad stat to lag behind in. I’ve used Moulder throughout a game and found him vastly inferior in both promoted roles to other units. If you insist on using him, he’ll be at least functional, but will ultimately fall behind other healers, despite his early join time.
Ross: Ross starts out as a Journeyman (villager with an axe) and will promote to a base class upon level 10. His best stats are in Strength and Luck, allowing him to hit hard and dodge readily, making him the easiest of the three villagers to train. He has either the option to become a Fighter or a Pirate, and later a Hero, Warrior, or Berserker. I recommend Pirate-Berserker most, with a good second option being Fighter-Hero. Avoid Warrior with him. Warriors tend to be more defensive units, while Ross is clearly designed to be a powerful offensive axe wielder.
Garcia: Like in the Blazing Blade, I don’t recommend using Fighters. They just don’t have the staying power that other axe users do. Garcia is the best Fighter in the game, and probably makes the best Warrior in the game. He has great HP, Strength, Skill and Luck, but is incredibly weak everywhere else, most notably in Speed.
Neimi: Archer suck in this game. But Neimi is the best of the worst. She’s got good growths across the board, save for Defense, Resistance and HP, but it never seems to help. One might assume that she’d make a great Sniper, but this is a mistake. Ranger is clearly the better path for her, as Snipers lack movement, secondary weapons, and the Sure Strike skills are rendered useless by their already high Skill. You may as well use her, as the other bow user is worse, but don’t expect miracles from Neimi.
Colm: Thieves are also a rare and underpowered class in The Sacred Stones. Colm joins early, and henceforth is more useful than the other option for the Thief role. He’s fast. And he can dodge. That’s it. He can open chests, so keep him around. But aside from that, he’s really just meh. Assassin is the more offensive promotion, Rogue eliminates the need for buying Lockpicks.
Artur: Light magic is very useful in this game, as you are faced by legions of Terrors, especially while grinding or in the late game. Artur makes a good Bishop, having great growths in Magic, Skill and Resistance, with his magic flaws being his low Defense and HP. As a Bishop, he can deal with the majority of enemies with his powerful Light Magic, and heal a significant portion of damage. As a Sage, he gains access to Anima magic as well as staffs, giving him offensive coverage. Artur’s greatest flaw, in my opinion, is that he faces competition from many magic users, a lot of whom specialize in Light magic.
Lute: Lute is the best magic user in the game. She has the highest magic growth of all units, and has respectable Speed and Resistance. As a sage, she becomes an offensive powerhouse, blowing away hostile enemies. As a Magic Knight, she is able to travel great distances, hitting any enemy within her range for great damage. She is likely the only viable Magic Knight, but functions better as a Sage, so the choice is largely preferential.
Natasha: Natasha is easily my choice healer, and later my choice for Bishop. Natasha is able to dodge more readily than Artur, and tends to double more frequently (upon promotion). She is also viable as a Valkyrie, but there is a better unit that comes later to fill that specific role.
Joshua: Joshua has story relevance later, so I recommend keeping him around, even if you don’t use him. The two Myrmidons are quite similar in uses and stat spread in this game, so you can get away with using either. Joshua joins much earlier than the other Myrmidon, and on an arena level, allowing him to accumulate levels and weapon proficiency. He has good Speed and Skill, and as a Swordmaster these stats are augmented, in meaning he’ll double and crit readily. I’d avoid the Assassin class with Joshua, as it isn’t the best option for his growths.
Ephraim: Eirika’s brother and the second main character, if you choose his route, Ephraim is the more durable of the Lords. Ephraim has great growths in Strength, Skill, Speed and Luck, with salvageable Defense. He wields a unique Lance, giving him a strong initial advantage over Eirika. Upon promotion, he gains great advantages as a lance wielder and a mount, giving him extra mobility. If you choose to go down his route, be aware that enemies are generally stronger and missions far more difficult.
Forde: As apparent by the color of his armor, Forde is the Kent of this game: a cavalier with good Skill, Luck and Resistance. I recommend Forde the least of the cavaliers. He joins too late to make much of a difference, as his brother Franz will already be trained and probably close to promotion. He can reliably hit and double, but will find trouble breaking through tougher enemies in the late game, primarily armored foes.
Kyle: The Sain of the game, Kyle is the most offensively oriented cavalier. He has good Strength, Skill and Speed growths, which, couple with his mobility, makes him a potent offensive force. I recommend him over Forde, but admit that both Seth and Franz will have a significant head start, and he will likely falter as a Great Knight when compared with other options in the late game.
Orson: Orson is available for only one mission in the main game, and therefore is hardly worth mentioning.
Tana: Tana! Tana is likely the best Pegasus Knight in the game. She has higher total stats than Vanessa, despite her later join time, and can really do some damage if you promote her to a Wyvern Knight. As a Falcon Knight, she’s far more durable, and her access to swords will give her great Defensive coverage. Her best growths are in Speed and Luck, with solid Strength and Skill, typical of a Pegasus Knight.
Amelia: Amelia is a Recruit (villager), and as such will require significant attention. I will admit, from a practical standpoint, that Amelia is likely one of the less useful villagers, as one of the main promotions she has is the Cavalier/Paladin/Great Knight line, and the player has already received four units in this area. The two promoted lords add up to six mounted units, so Amelia face redundancy issues in this line. Instead, I recommend Amelia as a Knight, then promoting her to a General. As a General, she is excellent in using both Lances and Axes, and her naturally high Luck coupled with the General class’s great Defense makes her able to withstand whatever physical hit she isn’t able to dodge. Again, she will require training, but the payoff is good if the player chooses her promotions carefully.
Innes: Again, bow units are pretty lackluster in this game. Innes is balanced, except for his Defense and Resistance, but will have trouble keeping up to Neimi. Also, Sniper isn’t exactly the best class, so it’s easy to ignore Innes after using him to recruit the other units on his mission.
Gerik: The first (and only) Mercenary in the game, Gerik comes as a welcome relief. He doesn’t really excel in any stat, but instead can be tailored to fit any role. Think Franz but not mounted. He does join fairly late, but does so on an Arena level with a Dancer, so it’s easy to train him up. I recommend the Hero promotion, as axes are arguably more useful than bows in this game. Ranger is also acceptable.
Tethys: Tethys is a Dancer. Yep. She can’t attack, but instead can give strong allies a second turn. She maxes out at level 20, and is useful in certain situations. Her high luck and speed allows her to dodge incoming attacks with regularity. I don’t like sacrificing slots on my team for Dancers, but the player can easily make Tethys work.
Marisa: She’s alright. Marisa joins late and will require training. Luckily she joins on an arena level, but it can still be a hassle. She’s essentially Joshua 2.0. She has better Luck and Resistance, but is on par with him in Speed and Skill, and will lag everywhere else. It’s up to personal preference whether Marisa deserves a spot on your team. I’ve had runs where she’s been great and useless, so I’m pretty neutral towards her.
L’Arachel: Easily the greatest character that has ever existed in any Fire Emblem game ever, L’Arachel is both funny, cute, a great mounted healer and, upon promotion, a great offensive unit. It should be noted that L’Arachel demands immediate and fastidious grinding, as she joins late in the game at a pitiful low level. Healers tend to level up relatively fast regardless, but I still recommend taking the time to gather bonus experience with her. L’Arachel’s big claim to fame is being a great Valkyrie, with excellent Luck, good Magic and Resistance, and solid Skill and Speed growths. Note that she will die if hit with a physical attack. But otherwise, she will heal damage in massive quantities and obliterate enemies with powerful Light magic in the late game.
Dozla: Ross is a better Berserker. Skip if Ross Berserker is present. Is you insist on Dozla, you’ll find a functional if unimpressive pre-promoted axe unit, with great HP, Strength and Speed.
Saleh: He’s sort of like Pent, a mid-game mage with good stats but unimpressive growths. Saleh has his uses, but magic users are plentiful and you likely already have a dedicated healer, Light mage, Anima mage, or someone who can use all three, on your team.
Ewan: Popular opinion would dictate that Ewan would be more useful than Amelia, as he has the ability to become a Dark Mage, a class that is traditionally very rare in the Fire Emblem series. However, Ewan’s late join time makes him by far the most difficult villager to train, despite his benefits when promoted. He has fantastic potential for Magic, Skill, Luck and Resistance, but this won’t keep him relevant, especially when Knoll, the other option for Dark mage, joins three or four chapters after with a net of 20 levels on Ewan. Overall, I’d say that if you want to train Ewan, he will be an excellent magic user, but if you want to bench him I can hardly blame you for it.
Cormag: Like Joshua, Cormag is a unit with story subtle story significance and some great dialogue with bosses later on. He is also the first and only Wyvern Rider you receive. As a Wyvern Rider, Cormag has good HP, Strength, Skill and Speed, making him a potent offensive force that can decimate enemy lines. He is also the only unit capable of becoming a Wyvern Lord, making him an offensively oriented Falcon Knight. As a Wyvern Knight, he can punch through armor and wield heavy lances well, meaning he’ll be a mobile and unstoppable physical tank. Overall, I recommend Cormag, despite his late join time.
Rennac: I like Rennac, and recommend recruiting him, but not using him. He holds the Member Card, an essential item if you wish to properly upgrade units. He’s okay, but suffers from joining as a pre-promoted Rogue. His growths, aside from Speed and Skill, are garbage. He’s outclassed by Colm in almost every category, so there’s not much point in using him. His banter with L’Arachel and Dozla is priceless.
Duessel: He’s actually good. It’s odd that, while traditionally pre-promoted units are pretty good save for the Cavaliers, that Sacred Stones gives you many pre-promoted units that are crap with the exception of the cavaliers. Duessel has great HP, Strength, Skill and Defense, and that’s all he really needs. He faces extreme competition from the other cavaliers that have likely already joined and been promoted, however.
Knoll: The only Dark Mage in the game, unless you choose to promote Ewan down this route, Knoll is alright. He joins late, and at level 10, and will require significant attention. However, upon promotion he can become your premiere Dark Magic user, with phenomenal Magic and Skill. His main drawbacks are his low Defense and middling Speed, making him susceptible to strong counterattacks.
Myrrh: Myrrh is severely handicapped by receiving only one Dragonstone with a 50 hit charge. This means, unless the player has Hammerne staffs, that Myrrh can only attack and/or counter 50 times before becoming entirely useless. That being said, if you are willing to use her sparingly, Myrrh is fantastic. Her stat growths are remarkably good, and she is guaranteed to gain points in HP and Defense every time she levels up. She can annihilate monsters, and most enemies will have trouble injuring her. If the player can find a good strategy to preserve her attacking potential, Myrrh is easily one of the best units in the game.
Syrene: Despite joining late and with crummy stats, Syrene has two main advantages. First, she is able to initiate, with Tana and Vanessa, the powerful Triangle Attack, which will come in handy in the late game. Second, her growths are quite good, enabling her to grow from a pre-promoted level 1 Falcon Knight into an unstoppable flying machine by the late game, with proper training. She’s a fantastic replacement for a flying unit that has been killed, but otherwise her utility depends on personal preference.

About FE Heroes, which free brave hero did you choose?
I haven’t decided yet!!! Normally it would be an easy call for me and I’d just go with Lucina, but I already have a bunch of good Blue units. I have 5 star copies of Abel and Clive, and 4 star copies of Nowi, Roderick, Catria, Reinhardit, Mae, Sharena, and a few others plus duplicates. Altogether, I think I have more good Blue units than I have of any of the other types so from a practicality perspective it’s hard to justify getting Brave Lucina.
As for Green Units I have a 5 star Raven, and then 4 stars of Camilla, Boey, Legion, Anna, Titania, and Cherche. Raven and Camilla are both good, and I could make something probably even better out of Cherche with an star increase and some skill inheritance, but Brave Ike seems amazing and would probably outclass all of them.
I’m not doing that great on Red units. I do have a 5 star Lilina that I’m heavily dependent on, but I don’t have any sword using 5 star Red units. I have some 4 stars that are pretty good, but none that are currently ranked any higher than A- on the wiki’s tier list (this thing).
Colorless is the only type I don’t have any 5 star units for. I have some good 4 star units, Gordin, Klein, Leon, Kagero, and Setsuna, but no 5 star ones.
So it’s hard to choose. I like Lucina the most, but Blue is by far the type I’m most well stocked on with good characters. All the other classes I’m a bit iffy on. Brave Lyn doesn’t seem quite as good as Brave Ike from what I’m seeing so far, but colorless is the only type I don’t have any 5 stars of, so do I go with her? She’s got the best mobility, but also seems to have the most weaknesses. Brave Ike seems like a complete monster, but do I need him more than I need a 5 star Colorless or a 5 star Red sword user? The full review isn’t up yet on Roy, so I don’t have a sense yet of how he stacks up compared to the others.
So yeah. This has been me thinking out loud and giving a way longer answer than necessary. I probably won’t be getting Lucina. Ike might be in the lead for me, but Lyn is still a contender and I’m waiting to hear more about Roy. So I’m not deciding quite yet. I’m going to have to spend a bunch of time thinking over what would be the best option for me before I make a decision

Fire Emblem Heroes Unit Review: Alm (Revised)
“Since you summoned me here, I've met many different people. So many...surprises. When it comes to you, I feel a bond different than the one I have with my friends. I'm...relieved? Or...at ease? Really, I've only felt this way with one other person.”
Tumblr media
Overview
Alm is a prime example of what a Weapon Refinement can do to a unit. Prior to this, he struggled to stand out compared to the other sword units like Ayra and Zelgius, and even with other Falchion units due to his statline (Jack-Of-All-Trades: Master of None). With Weapon Refinement providing Alm an extra push, he went from ‘Eh...’ to ‘Awesome’ thanks to the refinement acting like a Brave Sword+ on STEROIDS (killing dragons, yes please)! Sure, his base kit isn’t too grand, but with his new refinement, it’s an easy fix. Regardless of what IV’s Alm has, he’s one of the best dragon slayers in the game!
Stats and Skills
Default Stats: 45/33/30/28/22 (+Atk for more power or +Spd for a chance of a x4; -Res as it’s low anyway)
His weapon is Falchion, which is shared by Marth, Lucina, Masked Lucina Marth, and Chrom, and deals effective damage against dragons, along with healing 10 HP every three turns. Pretty nice prior to refinement. Now his refinement basically gives him the Double Lion skill he had in Echoes: whenever he’s at full health, he’ll attack twice before his foe can, but he takes 5 HP after combat. This is balanced out that Alm will recover 10 HP at every second turn, which actually stacks super well with Renewal 3 in case Alm takes more than 10 HP. With this refinement granting him a Brave Sword+ with little drawbacks, he can utilize skills that increases his Attack during the Player Phase such as Death Blow or even Life and Death 3.
His default skills are okay, but nothing too mind breaking. Draconic Aura is a nice special that works off of Alm’s nice Attack stat, though one can switch it with Glimmer or Luna if you want Alm to deal more damage. His default A-Slot is Attack+3, which is a nice budget skill in case you’re low on the more aggressive A-Slots like Death Blow or Life and Death. Windsweep 3 is an interesting skill as it prevents Alm from doubling but also prevents his foe from doubling as well if Alm has more speed than his foe (which can be mixed at times); only for foes that deal physical damage (sword, lance, axe, etc.)
Counters and Allies
Due to Alm’s low Resistance, mages such as Ishtar, Lute, Micaiah, Ophelia, and of course The Reinhardt will easily destroy him. Blue dragons can also pose a threat to Alm and can knock him out of the Double Lion range. Bulky lance units like Hardin, Brave Hector, Lukas, and Shiro poses a threat to Alm and can easily shrug off the Double Lion strikes and dish out heavy damage of their own. And even speedy and strong sword units like Mia, Ayra, Karla, and Lon’qu (thanks to his new refinement) can simply KO Alm due to his average speed.
Green units such as Hector (any variant not named Brave), Male Grima, Fae, and Myrrh can provide much needed back-up and defense from any foe that Alm may struggle to deal with on his own. Cherche is a nice option to soften any foes with buffs thanks to her refined weapon, even blue dragons where Alm may OHKO them. Buffers like Delthea/Linde, Eirika, or Ephraim are always nice to give Alm more power. And of course, dancers to give Alm an extra turn on whatever he wants (retreat, attack, etc.).
Recommended Skills
Assist: Reposition, Swap, Draw Back, Rallies, Ardent Sacrifice (in case you want him as a support unit), Reciprocal Aid
Special: Draconic Aura (default), Moonbow, Luna, Glimmer, Aether
A-Slot: Death Blow 3/4, Swift Sparrow 2, Life and Death 3
B-Slot: Renewal 3, Cancel Affinity 3, Chill Defense 3, Hit and Run, Windsweep 3
C-Slot: Threaten Defense 3, Odd/Even Wave 3, Hones/Tactics, Spurs/Drives
Sacred Seals: Heavy Blade 3, Quickened Pulse, Attack +3, Phantom Speed 3 (for Windsweep)
