one heart for one thing i like

so i had an epic plan to copy/paste my explanation of why i love the substitute kids in fe4 but i think i straight up lost access to it SO I GUESS THE GODS REALLY WANT ME TO TYPE IT UP FROM SCRATCH AGAIN HUH

the substitute kids still suffer a lot from the same issues that the canon gen two characters do, in that they don't all get the chance to shine unfortunately at the end, BUT WHAT THEY DO HAVE IS UNIQUE CONVOS. i love how characters that could've easily just been carbon copies of their canon counterparts get to have explicit differences, the strongest of which being how lester is kind of a punk who really sucks at talking delicately while his counterpart, deimne, is a former crybaby who is self-deprecative, pessimistic, and avoidant of nobles. but more than that, i think the fact that they change the tone of the game entirely is so cool!!

gen two tries its best to pretend like it's a happy ending after seliph wins the war despite the fact that seliph still is horrified by how jugdral views him as a god and they haven't seen him as the person he is. all of the new dukes, duchesses, and royals are completely ill-prepared to lead people but must due to the pressure of lineage and jugdrali politics, and so many of them are willing to throw themselves away in order to devote themselves to these birthrights. seliph's companions will no longer be close to him. julia has lost the family she has grown up with. it's not as big a tragedy as the end of gen one, but it's still one if you ask me.

but with the substitute kids? it's legitimately so heartbreaking. these units you spent all this time fighting alongside don't speak of hope or confidence in the final fight. they all feel like they don't belong there. like they aren't helpful enough. like the only people who deserve to be here are those with holy blood. they have done so much for you, been the backbones of this army and have proven that commoners and nonholy-bloods can still make a difference, but the way society has been established in jugdral has taken out all the confidence they could've had. they further reinforce how alone seliph is when even his closest allies who grew up with him are revering him as someone above them in all aspects. the chapter that is meant to be the most uplifting becomes so disheartening, and i always have a strange feeling that something's off with jugdral when seliph annexes everything which he is more likely to due in a substitute kid run.

i'm just completely captivated by the tonal shift, even if it's unintentional, and i think the substitute kids are worth looking at narrative-wise not only for their additional unique conversations but also what they do to the themes of fe4 as a whole.

as for another thing i like in the series, i really like the valm arc in fe13! i know, unpopular opinion, and i won't deny awakening after the timeskip is kind of a hot mess. but i like walhart; he's one of the best fe villains imo (though i'm very partial to zephiel, rudolf, lyon, and edelgard if u count her as one) for how he condemns others for not having an actual plan behind conquering and how he legitimately seemed to have the better interests at heart, he just had a forceful way of going about it because that's what valentian history has taught him to do. every major conflict in valentia has always been solved with war. walhart captivates me for showing me what an alm without a celica could be.

i also really appreciate it for showing me the sneaking suspicion i've always had: that the happy epilogues of fire emblem games were never the end. as sad as that sounds, i feel like conflict is pretty much always inevitable in these settings, so seeing how even with alm's and celica's best intentions, that valentia broke apart again is so fascinating! it even echoes the ending of gaiden warning how if people forget, the flames of war will come again and look at what happened!

granted, there's a lot of weird stuff in the valm arc, so it's not perfect. but hey, for a game that's aiming to be a lot of fanservice for the rest of the series, i like awakening for what it is.

I just figured out that "Cuan" is short for "Cuchulain". Why did Kaga have two characters named after Cuchulain, make one into an actual dramatic character while the other is just Ayra's incestuous soulmate, and then why did FE13 stick a Q in his name like they did to Lachesis?

As you said in your next ask, pretty sure he’s based off Cian, husband of Eithne and father of Lugh. Leif using “Lugh” as a pseudonym makes that even more explicit.

As for re-using names... Fionn Mac Cumhaill definitely has two FE4 characters named in his honor, one being Finn and the other being... Deimne. So yeah re-using names in a thematically appropriate sense was NOT a key concern.

Finally, FE localizations since FE11 enjoy sticking Ys and Qs in things.

i don’t normally do headcanon heights for fe muses mostly because i realize my own hcs are different from others and i try and just stick to “x is taller than y” but i’ve noticed now with pictures of fe treasure that i technically have canon height differences between my fe4 muses!

in relation to my previous post, i was extra af and tried to create a list of who was shortest to tallest for all the second gen units (including substitutes) + some enemies based on what fe treasure had to say. i tried my best to figure it out. as a note, my numbers are not heights but rather me measuring where they came up to above the lines depicted. any character with an asterisk is me saying they seemed to be kinda standing not flat on their heels so i had to alter height a bit
