Majeed Ashimeru: The burgeoning midfielder who is charting his own course to success
Majeed Ashimeru’s social media is a colourful yard of numerous messages of gratitude. Photos, posts, all tell a story – a story that gives credence to the idea of believing in a journey and seeing all of it unfold in front of you.
His Instagram bio reads “I love football” with a shout for the team he currently plays for, Red Bull Salzburg, and a last line he has left as a panegyric for his Maker – also with the inscription, “God Alone”.
It has been a long lonely road for Majeed. Days ago, he won the Austrian Bundesliga with Red Bull Salzburg – his first-ever league title and the excitement of it has made him reflective of where he hailed from. “I am happy for the team and particularly myself. This is my first ever league title in Europe and I am happy to have played a role and won it. Winning it felt special.” He said.
Ashimeru, Daka and others celebrating the Austria Cup win
Through the Mill
Ashimeru’s journey is a familiar Ghanaian story but with a little twist. The little scrawny kid everyone knew had talent but wouldn’t risk him in games because of his stature. The midfielder had to work extra hard to gain the trust of his coaches and his playmates when he began developing interest and love for the game.
Ashimeru was born and raised in Maamobi – a shanty suburb of Ghana’s capital, Accra and like many who grew up there, the dream is to find an opportunity to make it, leave and come back to improve the neighbourhood. Majeed was no exception. He started his football career at colts club, Strong tower FC.
At Strong Tower, he showed exceptional quality and was the team’s most valuable player. It was at Strong Tower too that he got the chance to move to the West Africa Football Academy (WAFA). “While at Strong Tower, I got the chance to join the Regional football competition organized by Milo where I represented the Greater Accra Region. This was all the way back in 2009. We played the games in Kumasi and I think that is where my luck shone because the manager at WAFA came to watch the games and I was picked so I got the chance to join the academy. By then it was called the Feyenoord Academy” Ashimeru said via a voice note on the social messaging platform, Whatsapp.
Life at WAFA
Formerly, the academy of the Dutch side, Feyenoord, the West Africa football academy located 109km east of the capital, has become one of the main grounds for producing footballers for the league and has also served a conveyor belt for the youth national teams. The academy is a secluded properly sheltered space with various fields and terraces aligning its sides.
There are other facilities like pools, a gym and others that are but a luxury for other Ghana Premier League teams. The meticulousness of the coaches and sheer attention to detail has set them apart from the rest. “WAFA really helped me a lot. It is just like a school. A school where you learn a lot. It is an academy where I think every player needs to grow up from. It is an amazing institution that helped me to get to this level. It is always not easy to get to this level but they played a huge role.” He recalled.
Ashimeru with the Austria Cup
Ashimeru had to chance at WAFA to work under one of the biggest football role models in Ghana in the late Sam Arday. Prior to kicking it off at WAFA, Arday had worked in Ghana’s youth teams and was the man who led Ghana to the last Olympic medal in 1992. That Barcelona squad formed the bedrock of the Black Stars team that played exceptionally well in the ’90s. “It was a great achievement to have learnt something from him,” Ashimeru said. “With Sam Arday, he knew so much about the game. Every player from WAFA around my time will tell you that his knowledge of the game was very good”.
Ashimeru’s time in the Ghana Premier League heralded the emergence of a good blend of footballers from the academy. Gideon Wajah, Caleb Amankwah, Razak Abalora, Charles Boateng, Martin Antwi and Komlan Agbeniadan had all come through the ranks and were giving teams a hell of a time in the league especially at home in Sogakope.
Every burgeoning player has that one game they will never forget – a game that shaped and defined their path. This was long before he had his dreadlocks on. For the then midfielder with a bulb of dishevelled black hair, it is the WAFA vs Hearts of Oak game in 2017 where the academy won 5-0. “I sometimes watch it on Youtube just to be happy.” He recalled with a pep in his voice that Ashimeru’s bullet hit, massive pile-driver from about 35 yards had hit the back of the net and that set of a massive return of goals.
He finished the game with one goal and two assists – a top game performance that got many turning in his direction. “Yeah, I remember that game. It is one game that I will never forget in my life because it was really a special day for me and the guys at WAFA. I remember the week before the game we played against Inter Allies and I had some knocks so I could not train the whole week. I trained a day before the game. I didn’t even know I was starting the game. The lineup came in and I was starting. I played on the left side that day because I wasn’t too fit and scored. After the game, we were all happy. The whole academy was on fire because we had made history because we had beaten Hearts 5-0.” He recalled with a little laugh.
The step-up
They say “Victory loves preparation” and in Ashimeru’s case, he was ready for anything that will be thrown at him by the time it came through. “Everyone wants to play in Europe and for me when I had the chance I wasn’t scared because I believed in myself and I knew how ready I was. It was a great moment. From Ghana and to get a club in Europe is not easy. I had so many chances earlier but by then my manager said I wasn’t ready so I had to wait. In 2017 he saw how ready I was for the challenge”.
Since his move to Europe, Ashimeru has combed through Lustenau, Wolfsberger and Salzburg all in Austria and St. Gallen in Switzerland. He has had to work his way into the main Salzburg team. It is not new to him though – an attitude that has been with him since childhood kept him sane and made sure that he thrives.
Now a league winner, Ashimeru has looked back at where he started with the fondest of memories. Austria is the country that has been kind enough to give the young boy a crack at the top tier level game. “Austria is a really small country and football here is getting better each year. When you win the league title you play in the Champions league directly so it is good for us. People watch a lot of football here. It is also good for a young player like me.”
Ashimeru, teammate pose for a photo after league and cup double
With the UEFA Champions league bells ringing from afar, Ashimeru has set his sights on producing the magic that made him a regular name on the lips of many in the Ghana Premier League. “We are a young team and we can go far. We are working so hard. Red Bull is a team that always do well in Europe so I think we can go far next season. Every year is getting better.” He hoped.
Ashimeru’s time at Salzburg with a Bundesliga trophy to his name and several goal contributions will count his time in Austria as hugely successful. He is still a player on the rise and in the next few years, we will have to wait to see which way the cat jumps.

Sports: The 20 most popular rich-list football teams on social media
As the wallets of the continent's biggest teams continue to grow, so too do their online presences. Social media is also increasingly driving revenue for clubs as brands target players with large followings for sponsorships.
Earlier this year, financial services firm Deloitte released its annual Football Money League, charting the massive revenues of Europe's biggest football clubs.
As the wallets of the continent's biggest teams continue to grow, so too do their online presences.
Social media has become a crucial part of the way the largest clubs connect with their fans around the world, with some even hosting foreign language Twitter accounts.
Social media is also increasingly driving revenue for clubs as brands target players with large followings for sponsorships.
There is still some disparity, though, between the clubs with the most money and the clubs with the most fans (on social media, anyway).
Scroll down to see who are the most popular teams from Deloitte's rich list, ranked in ascending order of combined followers on Facebook, Instagram and their biggest Twitter page — rounded to the nearest hundred thousand.
20. Schalke 04 — 4.1 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 2.9
Instagram: 0.5
Twitter: 0.7
The "04" stands for when the Club was founded… in 1904. With that much history, you can bet the team has built up a huge fanbase, and much of that has migrated online.
Though the club is one of Germany's wealthiest and most stable, its place in the Money League is under threat because of its absence from UEFA competitions this season.
19. West Ham United — 4.3 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 2.3
Instagram: 0.6
Twitter: 1.4
A surprisingly low Facebook following puts East London's West Ham near the bottom of the list.
Their most-followed player is the Mexican forward Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez, who has 5.2 million followers on Instagram.
18. Southampton FC — 4.5 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 3.1
Instagram: 0.3
Twitter: 1
This is Southampton's first ever appearance in the Money League and it is largely because of broadcasting revenue, which accounts for £143 million of the club's total revenue.
The club signed Danny Ings during the transfer window who has almost 700,000 followers on Instagram.
17. Everton FC — 5.4 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 3.1.
Instagram: 0.7
Twitter: 1.6
The Toffees' social accounts will have benefited from a season with Wayne Rooney, who has 12.5 million followers on Instagram alone.
Although Rooney has now jetted off to the MLS to play for DC United, Everton made three major signings in a remarkable end to the transfer window, including the former FC Barcelona midfielder André Gomes, who has over 2 million Instagram followers.
16. Napoli — 6.5 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 4.1
Instagram: 1
Twitter: 1.4
Napoli lost the Serie A title to Juventus by just four points last year — a performance that saw revenues increase to earn the southern Italian side a place in the Money League.
Belgian forward Dries Mertens has 1.2 million followers on Instagram.
15. Leicester City — 9.7 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 6.5
Instagram: 2
Twitter: 1.2
Leicester City gatecrashed the Money League last season when it ranked 20th. The club has since climbed to 14th in the financial table thanks to its participation in the Champions League and gained one place in the social media ranking.
Deloitte says the key to further inclusion on its lists will be regular top 10 finishes in the Premier League.
14. Inter Milan — 13.8 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 10.2
Instagram: 2
Twitter: 1.6
Inter Milan has gained over 5 million followers since February last year — an increase that exceeds 60%.
This aligns with the club's profits, which are up 137% on the year before.
13. Tottenham Hostpur — 15.5 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 10.1
Instagram: 2.4
Twitter: 3
Spurs are up one place since February last year. They placed second in the Premier League last season and its run in the Champions League this season has caused a financial windfall and a boost to their online presence.
Mercurial midfielder Dele Alli has done social media campaigns with the likes of BooHoo Man.
12. Atlético Madrid — 22.7 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 13. 8
Instagram: 4.9
Twitter: 4
Despite toppling their Madrid rivals in the UEFA Super Cup recently, Atletico is way behind Real both in terms of cash flow and social following.
Their striker Antoine Griezmann has almost 21 million Instagram followers.
11. Borussia Dortmund — 23.9 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 15.2
Instagram: 5.5
Twitter: 3.2
Dortmund had the highest average match attendance of any Bundesliga club last season, according to worldfootball.net. Unsurprisingly, that resulted in a lot of social media traffic.
The club's biggest star Marco Reus has 6.9 million followers on Instagram.
10. Manchester City — 49.3 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 35.2
Instagram: 7.8
Twitter: 6.3
Manchester City lands a total five places below their place on the Deloitte Money League as its budget outweighs its fan base.
However, City is still a developing club and its position as an economic powerhouse should see it grow comfortably on social media as manager Pep Guardiola continues to make high-profile signings.
9. Liverpool FC — 51 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 31.9
Instagram: 8.6
Twitter: 10.5
Mohamed Salah the "Egyptian King" of Liverpool has 19.3 million followers on Instagram.
"Salah is now considered the most famous person in Egypt," Egyptian doctor and Salah mega fan Michael Wagdy told The Sun.
"He has now become an idol for the people… we now wait for any match for Liverpool and you can't imagine the happiness that occurs when he scored."
8. Juventus — 55.1 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 34.6
Instagram: 14.3
Twitter: 6.2
Cristiano Ronaldo's €100 million transfer to Juventus had an unsurprisingly monumental effect on Juventus' social channels.
Ronaldo, who is the second most-followed person on the whole of Instagram (just one million behind Selena Gomez at the time of writing), added more than 400,000 followers onto Juventus' main and English Twitter pages, as well as in excess of 1.4 million on Instagram and 400,000 on Facebook, according to Football Benchmark.
Ronaldo's post confirming his move to Juventus quickly became the 4th most-liked Instagram of all time.
7. Paris Saint-Germain — 55.8 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 35.2
Instagram: 14.2
Twitter: 6.4
The French team won a domestic quadruple last season, just nine months after flexing its financial muscle as it signed Neymar for a world record transfer fee of £200 million.
The Brazilian striker will have represented a boon to the team's social media standings as well as their goal-scoring prowess, as he boasts over 100 million followers on Instagram alone.
6. Arsenal FC — 63.3 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 37.8
Instagram: 11.8
Twitter: 13.7
Arsenal dropped out of the top five most popular clubs on social media this year after failing to qualify for this season's Champions League tournament.
The club does benefit from French wing-back Hector Bellerin, though, who is basically a part-time model and posts pictures of himself at events like the GQ Awards and London Fashion Week on Instagram.
5. Bayern Munich — 65.7 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 47.6
Instagram: 13.6
Twitter: 4.5
Bayern Munich is up one place since February last year, topping London side Arsenal.
The German side will have received a boost from signing Colombian midfielder James Rodriguez, who boasts almost 40 million followers on Instagram.
Unlike its top rivals in Spain, Bayern Munich runs its Twitter page in its native language — even though its Facebook page posts in English — which may account for its low following on the micro-blogging site.
Their English Twitter account has over 900,000 followers.
4. Chelsea FC — 72.2 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 47.7
Instagram: 12.4
Twitter: 12.1
Stamford Bridge continues to attract the biggest celebrity spectators (Will Ferrel popped in to congratulate Eden Hazard last year) and where celebrities go, social media follows.
It may also surprise you to learn that Brazilian centre-back David Luiz has over 18 million followers on Instagram.
3. Manchester United — 114.8 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 73.5
Instagram: 23
Twitter: 18.3
Manchester United may have topped the Money League for two years running, but it's still a long way off breaking into the top two in terms of social media following.
Last season saw United lose one of its biggest stars, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who has almost 35 million followers on Instagram as he migrated over to the US to join LA Galaxy.
Their biggest star in terms of social following, Paul Pogba, now has a World Cup winners' medal to his name.
2. FC Barcelona — 190.4 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 102.7
Instagram: 58.8
Twitter: 28.9
Barcelona has a further 5.6 million followers on its Catalan account and a further 13.6 million on its Spanish one.
Lionel Messi is the third most-followed football player on Instagram after Neymar and Ronaldo, boasting 97.5 million followers on the platform.
1. Real Madrid C.F. — 201.9 million followers
Followers (millions):
Facebook: 109.2
Instagram: 62
Twitter: 30.7
Despite losing Cristiano Ronaldo this summer, Real Madrid is the biggest football club on social media right now and the only club in the list to top 200 million followers across all platforms.
"Los Blancos" have gained over 40 million followers since February last year, toppling their El Clasico rivals Barcelona for the top spot.

good evening to all the barça alignment connaisseuses!
for this is I do have many thoughts and inspiration:
-Christensen I 100% put there, because I saw a tiktok by L’orsai! Podcast, where they talk about where you would encounter random barça players and they think Christensen would be all day long at the MNAC and I agree -Marc and Eric just seem like they could be really interested, if it’s the right museum -Gavi and Ousmane are the unlikely (but confirmed) besties that you don’t want to have with you at the museum -Iñaki, Pedri, and Ronald are only there to see the ‘famous’ stuff and leave right after having seen that -Jules is just there for the inspirational stuff -don’t think I should have to explain Ansu and Ale...but if you need more, just go to insta -Sergi, Frenkie, Franck, and Raphinha don’t care about the stuff, but they will be happy if you point out the doggies or just any cute animal -Xavi is tired, Jordi never gives a fuck, and Robert I’m not sure -Ferran and Arnau are dared to lick the painting, Marcos just does it out of solidarity -and Busi is the only serious one, so he removes them himself

Well, hello ...
I have, like way, too many of these saved and thought I should probably post them before half of the people on there are gone...
-obvs the older (boring don't hate me) guys are 'normal'
-for jules, ale and raphihna it's the aesthetics because of their style, for andreas it's because he's nordic
-then we have the two levels of capitalization for our loud people and Busi
-the people like me, who use all emojis 🫶💐💌
-the actual normal ones
-and the ones that just doesn't know how to spell OR makes mistakes cause it's not their first language and autocorrect hates them

Barça Players Christmas Hits
Hi to that one anon that requested this and (as I ask them) came to scream at me for forgetting. I am the worst, so thank you for making sure I dont post it in January.
This is a ranking of how likely the barça players are to belt out christmas songs (pls dont get into religion and all, I truly dont care about that aspect of it).
Tumblr media
I really dont have an explanation for this, so if you have other vibes, feel free to feel them, this is just what my head went to.

Im about to board my flight, but before I leave, I am giving you: Barça Players as Online Classes Types.
This is almost a throwback at this point, eh?
-frenkie, eric and franck seem like the smart guys here, so they would be bored in quarantine and learn out of boredom
-xavi has enough responsibility as it is, so he needs a break
-ronald and robert have a family, so they try to keep things going, pedri is just there too
-ansu and arnau seem like loud people, and raphinha is brazilian, so...
-gavi is known to be the guy that forgets something (thanks ferran), but so does ferran himself, especially if it’s about school
-the rest is just living in a different world since lockdown started, so classes are their least concern

Hiii! Can you make Barça players as how they flirt?
Hi Anon, so I know this isn't 100% what you asked for, but I found this funnier. So I give you this. If you what something else and have a specific templet or something, feel free to message me again :)
Tumblr media
Elaboration: -Frenkie, Marc, and Franck are like ok but weirded out -Jordi probably knows he's cool, so he gets that people want to kiss him; Andreas is mysterious, so who knows what he thinks; Ronald and Erci are just low-key -Ferran and Sergi are both def relationship people; Jules I don't really know, but I feel it matches his insta stories -now I know y'all love the Gavi relationship drama, but too me he is still a baby -Ale and Xavi are in the same group, but they are there for very different reasons: Ale is just that vibe and woud think that he is funny; Xavi is there because he will try to get the cash needed for new players -Sergio is just brutally honest; Pedri well, you know -and ofc the sweeties of the group, although obvs the description is a bit difficult, but you all get the vibe

-Gavi is their leader
-Balde, Marcos and Raphinha are def entertained by the get-together
-after seeing Araujo drag Arnau away, we all know that he doesn't enjoy it
-and ofc my fave smart guys as teachers

Tumblr Babes, it's time for a new Barça Alignment Chart 🫶
-to start, Busi scares me, so he def sleeps with open eyes 👀
-Ferran seems the most likely to be into astrology, no explanation
-and Pedri just looks like he never gets a full night of sleep
-Jordi just has that vibe about him, if you know
-Andreas is danish and danish people also kinda scare me (thanks Heinz Ehlers for that)
-Jules def gets enough sleep and would be the first to have a specific pillow
-Eric is the logical one
-Arnau the sarcastic one
-and Ansu is the sweet one 🫶🫶🫶

Because Anon asked so nicely🫶, here's another one. As we had one for Gavi's trademark, this one is in honor of Mr. Plátano himself.
-okay, so Pedri would not only peel his own banana, he would also peel ones for the others and force them to eat them (only ones from the Canary Islands ofc)
-Ronald and Eric don't need help because their normal people
-Frenkie, Ansu and Jules have baby faces so they need help, Raphinha idek
-then we have those that use a knife and are not to be trusted
-the ones that have given up for a variety of reasons
-the ones without much thoughts
-and the weird ones that don't like bananas

Another Barça Alignment Chart to cheer you guys up. Please enjoy and remember that life goes on, even when your faves f**k up.
-obvs Xavi does not have time for any (more) criminal acts, so please give him a break -Ousmane kinda scares me and Jordi is def the person that could hide a body if necessary -language invention is the following scenario: Ferran is the one to start is (cause he is the child-man), Pedri is not there for it, but Eric ofc is (and is the only one that seems like he could actually manage to do it) and they are inseparable so... -and than we have the two alcoholics and the diet freak
