Voided velvet upholstery used for the Maple Living-Room of Her Majesty at the Alexander Palace in Tsarskoe Selo
In the Maple Living-Room of Her Majesty, a variety of textiles were used to decorate the Empress’s informal reception-room which was made up of forty pieces of built-in and free-standing furniture. Among these various chairs, tables, sofas, etc. were a folding-screen with leaded-glass inserts, small stools or benches with curved arm rests and an upholstered wingback chair which was built in the same shape as the one from the Lilac Cabinet of Her Majesty.  In the collection of GMZ Tsarskoe Selo, there are pieces of these textiles which were cut from the furniture by the last chief curator of the Palace-Museum, Anatoly M. Kuchumov to preserve the textiles used, in the event a restoration were to happen as was hoped for. However this did not happen, and what had been left of the Maple Living-Room was stripped by the early 1950′s and a load-bearing wall was placed in the middle of the four windows, effectively making two exhibition halls. Today, the post-war configuration has been removed and the room faithfully reconstructed to how it looked prior to the Second World War. One of the textiles in particular, a voided velvet ground of green with a stylised, blue and green peacock feather motif was used to decorate several pieces of furniture - a wingback chair, folding-screen, curved benches, and seat cushions for the seats of some of the wooden armchairs - all of which was designed and executed by the firm of F.F. Meltser & Co. - the Court Decorator being R.F. Meltser.  Currently, furniture is still in the production stage for the Maple Living-Room by the Tsarskoselskaya Restoration Workshop, and in the future the room will be filled with more pieces until the stage for this room is completed.  ________________________________________________________________ Please enjoy these images, and If you'd like to share them elsewhere, you can download them yourself and if you do so, PLEASE remember to credit the institution/news source/author/photographer - in this case Gosfond, and GMZ Tsarskoe Selo, Mr. Newman appropriately! Hello, I saw that you take free readings again so I wanted to shoot my shot. My initials are F.F and my question is “how many future children will i have and what will they be like/look like?”
Thank you and have a blessed day 💛
Hi F. F.
For you I see one child, possibly multiple pregnancies, but take that with a huge grain of salt and do not worry.
The physical and personality archetypes for a child with these oracle cards would be a child who possesses a mysterious and introspective nature, but may also face challenges related to trust and self-confidence. Let's explore the interpretation of each card and how they contribute to the archetypes:
Physical Archetype: The physical archetype for this child might be someone who has an enigmatic and introspective aura. They may have expressive eyes that reveal a depth of emotions, and their demeanor might be reflective and observant. Their appearance could be somewhat reserved or ethereal, drawing others in with their mysterious presence.
They might be someone with an energetic and adventurous disposition. They may have an athletic build, exuding strength and vitality. Their eyes might hold a spark of curiosity and enthusiasm, and their movements could be swift and agile, reflecting their active nature.
Personality Archetype: The personality archetype for this child would be someone who has experienced difficulties in trusting others and might have feelings of self-doubt. They may have a sensitive and forgiving nature, often giving others second chances. The child's innocence and naivety might lead them to see the world with wonder and hope, but it could also make them vulnerable to being hurt.
They would be an outgoing and imaginative individual with a strong sense of determination. They may be sociable and have an innate ability to inspire and bring joy to those around them. The child's adventurous spirit and creative mind make them open to new experiences and always seeking ways to explore and learn.
Now, let's analyze the interpretation of each oracle card:
High Priestess reversed: This card suggests a lack of intuition or difficulty accessing inner wisdom. The child may have trouble trusting their instincts and may feel disconnected from their emotions.
5 of Swords reversed: Reversed, this card indicates a desire to avoid conflict or to let go of past grievances. The child may be forgiving in nature and seeks to find peace in their interactions with others.
Second chance: This card points to the child's forgiving nature, willing to offer second chances to people who may have disappointed or hurt them.
Naive: This trait suggests innocence and a lack of worldly experience. The child's naivety may lead them to believe in the best in others, but it could also expose them to potential pitfalls.
Kiss: This card symbolizes intimacy and connection. The child may value emotional connections with others, seeking affection and closeness in their relationships.
Autumn: This season signifies change, reflection, and letting go. The child may have a contemplative nature, always looking for deeper meanings and lessons in their experiences.
Forgive yourself for not knowing better at the time, Forgiving and learning: These cards emphasize the importance of self-compassion and growth. The child may have experienced challenges or mistakes, but they are open to learning from them and forgiving themselves.
Ken (Barbie character), Truman Burbank: These characters may represent the child's desire for authenticity and genuine connections with others. They may seek honesty and sincerity in their relationships.
10 of Cups: This card represents emotional fulfillment and harmony within the family or close relationships. The child may have a longing for a loving and supportive environment where they can feel secure and cherished.
Ships: This card symbolizes journeys, adventures, and exploration. The child's personality archetype aligns well with this card, as they are likely to have a desire for new experiences and a love for exploring the world around them.
11:11: Seeing repetitive numbers like 11:11 often holds spiritual significance and a sense of synchronicity. The child's personality archetype might be drawn to spiritual ideas and be in tune with their intuition.
Pluto: Pluto is associated with transformation and rebirth. The child may have a resilient and transformative nature, capable of adapting to various situations.
Mars: Mars represents energy, action, and drive. The child's energetic and adventurous personality aligns with the qualities of Mars, as they are likely to have a go-getter attitude and a love for physical activities.
Taurus: Taurus is known for being determined, practical, and reliable. The child might possess a strong determination and a grounded nature, especially when pursuing their goals.
ENFP: ENFPs are known as "The Campaigners" or "The Champions." They are outgoing, imaginative, and passionate individuals. The child's personality archetype resonates well with ENFP traits, as they are likely to be sociable and have a natural charisma that draws others to them.
Neptune: Neptune is associated with dreams, creativity, and intuition. The child's imaginative and creative nature may be influenced by the qualities of Neptune, as they may have a rich inner world and a penchant for artistic pursuits.

more updates on my mom playing sd.r2 because why not
her faves are Gund.ham, Nag.ito, and Chi.aki and now she’s seen the first two die and went “I lost them one after the other” OH GOD JUST WAIT
literally will Not stop saying the Son.ia is the traitor
me: so you think it’s Son.ia? / her: well I HOPE it’s Kaz.uichi / me: okay that’s mean
her: but if they tie up Na.gito he’ll be an easy target / me: yeah but like. . . who cares / her: >:O
she like never cries over games/movies/etc (unlike me) but she cried a little over Gun.dham :(
like literally she just sat there in silence for a minute when they all Found Nag.ito. which, y’know. mood.
she got the truth bullet “blood on the girder,” took a drink, and almost choked laughing when I went “bLoOd oN ThE GiRdEr?” despite it not being funny At All
she almost got that Na.gito used the spear on himself until I asked “but how?” and she just went “I don’t know, never mind” dksfhkdfhjsaklf
oh yeah at one point Haj.ime brought up the Reserve Course thing again and she was like “What, he’s still on that subject?” like KFHSDFHADHKAF
called Kaz.uichi a chickenshit
she’s really caught on Na.gito’s comment that Mono.kuma was “waiting for someone” and she keeps suggesting it’ll be one of the first game’s survivors
she thinks said d.r1 survivor is with the F.F which is, like..... correct obv. but she also still thinks F.F is evil so i mean
her: so in the final trial i’ll get to find out who the mastermind is, right? / me: uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh well i mean yeah that’s part of it
me: —and also the lock on Haj.ime’s door is broken / her: why do you keep bringing that up? / me: because it made me rlly scared when i played this part :c

[1/4]💐Hi! i'd like a parts 4 and 6 matchup? 👉👈 I'm a INFJ-T, female, Virgo. I'm 5'11 and very insecure about my height, because of that I'm very awkward around others I don't know. When I am uncomfortable I cannot stop talking, I blabber on and on. Most of time most awkward situations I find myself in, I put myself in through saying something utterly stupid. I'm haunted by those moments. I'm very shy and reserved, frankly judgemental with others I don't know.
[2/4]💐 I'm very stubborn, and first impressions are sort of everything to me. So if I have an idea about someone, it sticks. It'll take a bit to convince me otherwise, though I do try to keep an open mind. Those who I feel are trusting enough or even really worth any of my time as a friend, I cherish completely. I'd do anything to protect the people I care about. I'm very affectionate once I'm close with someone, I will hug my bro, I'm not afraid to kiss my bro. I dedicate myself to my friends.
[3/4]💐I’m actually much different around my friends, I'm much more bold and open. I like to pick on my friends, playfully of course. little pranks, stealing things only to give them back. Petty things. I love to joke with people. Though I have a very strange sense of humor. I'm very protective over the people I care about, I've been told I 'mother' a lot, I can be bit possessive too. I only really want what's in their best interest though. I only really try to motivate them.
[4/4]💐I love to write and draw though I'm very critical of anything I create and or am interested in, not to mention obsessive. Once I'm interested in something I kind of suck the life out of it until I know everything about it,or just lose interest. I am a little needy with those I let into my life,I have a few abandonment issues. I'm told I have a bit of a temper, though I tend to bottle things up, then lash out.I'm trying to work on my faults. I'm quite nit-pickey as well. Have a lovely day!
for part 4 I match you with... Mikitaka!
Mikitaka would 100% love you regardless of your height, he doesn’t concern himself with things like that
He wouldn’t mind you talking a lot, he likes learning and exploring so he would be thrilled to hear what you have to say!
If you played a prank on him, he wouldn’t be upset or angry, he’d just be happy that you care enough to think about him!
Also, if you needed him for a prank or something he’d be more than willing to help you!
He’d be there to calm you down if you ever got upset over something
He’s not very good at human interactions or concepts like love or romance but he knows that he would die for you and believes that he is greatly in love with you!
You might have to explain some simple concepts to him, but he will greatly appreciate it and pay you back in some way
Your strange sense of humor will just fascinate him
He’ll ask what some of your jokes mean and though he won’t get most he’ll still laugh
When you tell him you have abandonment issues he’ll promise that he will never ever leave you!
Much like you, Mikitaka also loves and cherishes his friends
He’d be thrilled to meet others and interact with them
If you say something you think is stupid or awkward, chances are he won’t even notice
He’ll say way more embarrassing or wild things on a daily basis
When it comes to your drawings, he’ll love anything you draw!
Even if you don’t think it’s good, he loves them
If you ever draw him he will melt and keep it with him at all times
He will be just as obsessed with whatever you’re interested in!
When it comes to nicknames he will call you generic nicknames
Literally.
“Generic nickname, come here, I found something cool!”
When you explain what a nickname and a petname is he understands more and will actually give you one
For part 6 I match you with... Foo Fighters!
F.F. is similar to Mikitaka in that she doesn’t much care about things most would care for
She doesn’t mind your temper
She loves your strange sense of humor
She’ll loathe being apart from you just as much as you, her
She will 100% join in on whatever pranks you may pull, and if you pull one on her, she’ll cry laughing
If you ever dislike a drawing or something she will hype you up until you do
She thinks you are perfect!
She also likes holding your hand so she doesn’t get lost
But mainly because she likes being with you and around you
“Quick, hold my hand! That woman over there is staring and I think she wants to fight!”
“Hold my hand in the lunch line so you don’t get lost”
She will call you really weird nicknames that you can’t help but love
Hope you enjoyed! <3

Midnight Train - F.F.
pairing: Fangs Fogarty x Reader
summary: Following a series of overdoses on laced weed in Riverdale, the Serpents go to Greendale to figure out how to put an end to it. After running into their target’s look-alike, Fangs decides she’s not as harmless as the other Serpents believe she is.
part 1/2
Tumblr media
Engines revved along the road heading into Greendale. Fangs couldn’t miss the sign that flashed by him in almost a second as he followed Jughead, Toni, Cheryl, and Sweet Pea into the city. Serpent business tended to stay local, but on certain occasions such as this one, travelling was a must. The sun was setting, almost landing just on the horizon as the air became cooler; setting the tone for the business the Serpents had to attend to over the next few days.
It all began when a new crew arrived in Riverdale and Southsiders were dropping dead like flies, all because of weed. The Serpents quickly concluded that the weed was laced and their next step was to find the person responsible for this. After many agonizing weeks, the Serpents finally had a lead in Greendale.
His name was Pokerface; a drug kingpin in Greendale who had not only targeted Riverdale but Centreville as well. His motives were still unclear but Fangs was sure they’d figure it out when they got the chance to meet him face to face. However, Fangs and the other Serpents accompanying him weren’t stupid. They knew the five of them couldn’t take someone as powerful as Pokerface down on their own. This visit was strictly reserved for Mona Lisa; Pokerface’s daughter. The Serpents figured she’d be easier to get alone and therefore get more information out of her.
When the group arrived at their motel, it was just creeping up around 10pm. Despite the fact that they had business to attend to, Jughead’s seemingly insatiable need for food seemed to take first priority so the group travelled towards the diner that was nearby, with Sweet Pea’s occasional comments about how if he were the Serpent King, he would have been getting down to business right this second. Fangs agreed with Sweet Pea in some ways, but he also knew that they might not find out too much on the first night.
Fangs stumbled to a halt when he crashed into Toni who had been stopped by Jughead abruptly. Up ahead stood a group of Ghoulies. Fangs couldn’t help but roll his eyes at the sight of them. Seeing as how both the Serpents and the Ghoulies were being targeted by Pokerface, the Serpents proposed that just this once the two gangs would come together to put an end to the same enemy. However, the Ghoulies opposed, hypothesizing that this was just a way for the Serpents to take down the Ghoulies.
“Of course they’re here too,” Sweet Pea muttered from beside Fangs.
Fangs could practically feel the heat of anger radiating off of his best friend and made it a point to ensure Sweet Pea didn’t make any sudden decisions even though his temperature was rising with anger at the sight of the group.
“Those raccoons are talking to someone,” Cheryl informed the group.
In unison, they all took cautious steps forward to try and identify who it was. It was a girl with a bag on her back that looked so full it might explode at any second. She was clutching onto the straps tightly as she tried to maintain a somewhat safe distance from the crowd in front of her.
“Is that…” Toni trailed off, stepping forward to get a better look. “…Is that Mona Lisa?”
Fangs’s eyes squinted, fighting against the dark of the night as best as he could to try and decipher whether or not it was really her. He patted the pocket of his jacket to ensure he had his switchblade there and when he was sure it was there, he looked to Jughead, awaiting further instruction. The confusion written on his face dampened Fangs’s certainty.
“I-I can’t tell if it’s her or not,” Jughead concluded.
“Come on Jones,” Sweet Pea spoke, his voice as steady as a rock. “She looks exactly like her.”
Just as Sweet Pea was about to push through his group of friends, Jughead stopped him by slamming his hand against the taller boy’s chest. “It’s not her,” he concluded.
“You’re just saying that so we-“
“No Sweet Pea,” Jughead stared daggers up at Sweet Pea. “It’s not. Look at her,” he turned towards the girl. “Mona Lisa has a scar running along her arm. This girl doesn’t have a scar.”
The Serpents looked towards the girl once again. Her short sleeves revealed both of her arms almost completely and they were free of any sort of scar, confirming that Jughead was right. Without another word, Jughead approach the Ghoulies.
“What is he doing?” Cheryl questioned with her arms folded.
Fangs sighed, “He’s gonna save the girl.”
Without another word, the rest of the Serpents were by Jughead’s side as he began to approach the Ghoulies. The deadly stares in the rival members’s eyes was diluted only slightly by amusement at the sight of the Serpents.
“Leave her alone,” Jughead told them.
“I don’t think this is any of your business,” the Ghoulie fired back. “So why don’t you and your bitches keep walking?” he gave pointed looks towards Toni and Cheryl.
“What did you just call us?” Toni’s voice was laced with venom as she stood by Jughead’s side, ready to fight.
“Bitches,” the Ghoulie repeated without missing a beat, sizing Toni up.
Fangs’s jaw clenched at the disrespect shown towards his friends. He and Sweet Pea joined Toni’s side, stepping in front of her slightly to protect her from the considerably larger man. Toni was tough - Fangs would never doubt that - but she had a habit of being too prideful to back down from a fight that was unfair to her, especially when it came to fighting for Cheryl.
“We’re happy to settle this,” Sweet Pea decided. He pulled his switchblade out of his pocket, flipping it open just inches between his and the Ghoulie’s face. “Right here, right now.”
“Oh…” another one of the Ghoulies mused, nodding towards Sweet Pea’s tattoo. “…Serpents,” he spat. The stakes of the situation rose as the other Ghoulies realized that the people before them weren’t just another group of regular pedestrians. “This got a lot more interesting.”
“We’re not looking for a fight,” Jughead stepped in, holding a hand out to halt the movements of the Ghoulies as they reached for weapons of their own. “This girl-“ he pointed to her as she stood watching the scene unfold before her. Fangs noticed the profound fear in her eyes and couldn’t help but understand why the Ghoulies believed she was Mona Lisa. Getting a closer look at her, her facial features were - if not identical - similar to Mona Lisa’s. The clutch she held on her bag straps hadn’t relaxed one bit. Her whole demeanour was tense as her eyes didn’t dare to meet the scene before her. Her wide eyes scanned the area, possibly looking for someone to help her. Fangs wanted to ensure her that she was okay, but something in him told him that was one thing he shouldn’t be doing. “-she’s not the one you’re looking for,” he promised. “You’re looking for Mona Lisa right?” he looked amongst the group. “Mona Lisa has a scar along her arm,” he continued after receiving silence from the Ghoulies.
Jughead looked towards the girl, holding his hand out to her. The girl noticeably flinched but relaxed once she realized Jughead wasn’t going to hurt her. “She doesn’t have that scar,” he proved his point before turning towards the Ghoulies. “So leave her alone.”
Fangs’s gaze never left the girl as the Ghoulies and Serpents continued their conversation. Her nervous eyes darted around the area as he noticed her breathing being focused into her chest. Fangs studied the girl further, realizing that her physique was similar to that of Mona Lisa’s. He wasn’t completely sure that this girl was innocent.
“Jughead-“ Fangs began to mutter but stopped the second he felt someone shove into him. His head snapped towards him to see Sweet Pea and a Ghoulie in a full on fist fight. Before he could help his friend, he felt a fist collide with the side of his face. He was almost knocked to the ground but once he regained his composure, he swung back, evening out the score between himself and the Ghoulie.
The fight didn’t last long between the two gangs. The sound of police sirens pierced through the air, causing everyone to stop in their tracks. The flashing of red and blue was seen painting the side of the building across the street from them. The police car began to turn the corner and without another thought, the Ghoulies took off running. He looked to the Serpents, noticing only minor cuts and scrapes on their faces.
Just as he was about to follow his friends, his mind fled to the girl. He scanned the street, trying to see if the Ghoulies took off with her. However, she was at the other end of the street, about to turn the corner behind a building. She took one look back towards the Serpents and her eyes met with Fangs’s for a brief moment before she disappeared.
“Fangs!” Sweet Pea grabbed onto the collar of his jacket, bringing his attention back. “Come on man, we gotta go!”
Sweet Pea began to drag him along until he picked up his feet and began to follow his friends far away from the police and the mystery girl.
At the diner, the Serpents were occupying one of the last booths for the night. Fangs couldn’t get the girl off of his mind and while the theory had been thrown around that the girl standing there really was Mona Lisa, no one had truly considered that it might be a possibility. Except for Fangs. He was the only one that got a clear look at her because everyone else was too focused on the Ghoulies. But Fangs looked at her; really looked at her.
“It had to have been her,” Fangs spoke for the first time since entering the diner. All eyes were on him now as the table fell silent. He looked up to his friends, noticing their interest. “I looked at her - right at her. She looked too much like Mona Lisa to not be her.”
“We don’t know that for sure Fangs,” Jughead said calmly. “I don’t want us going after her if she has nothing to do with this.”
“No Jones,” Fangs sat up straighter. “You don’t know. I do. I looked at her, you didn’t. We can’t trust her.”
“Chances are we’ll never run into her again,” Sweet Pea said before eating his last french fry. “Her bag was full - looked like she was going somewhere.”
“Which is all the more reason to go after her,” Fangs pointed Sweet Pea as he spoke to Fangs. “If it is her and she leaves, then who knows where she’s gonna go and we’re gonna lose our only lead.”
Jughead’s lips pursed as he took in Fangs’s words. He was right, of course. “She’s probably already gone by now,” he said. “And if it is her, she won’t be leaving Pokerface’s side for too long. She’ll come back.”
“What are we supposed to do until then?” Fangs questioned, his eyes narrowing at Jughead. “Let the rest of the Southside keep using Pokerface’s stuff and OD until there’s none of us left?”
Jughead sighed, sitting back in his seat. “Of course that’s not what I’m saying-“
“Then we have to find her,” he fired back. “Go to the train station and find her.”
The Serpents followed Fangs’s instruction, however there was no sign of her at the train station. The group had looked around, asked a few people, and even waited for some time before they decided she had already caught a train. Fangs tried to remain optimistic that the girl wasn’t really Mona Lisa and they still had a chance of finding the real Mona Lisa and putting an end to the chaos in Riverdale. However, Fangs couldn’t shake his thoughts from that girl. Whether or not she really was Mona Lisa, the girl looked far too nervous and with the way she was looking around, Fangs wouldn’t be surprised if she was planning a sneaky getaway from the group.
“Fangs, let it go man,” Sweet Pea told him the night they were all gearing up to leave Greendale. “We’ll find something soon enough.”
That wasn’t enough for Fangs. Losing some of the Serpents to Pokerface’s laced weed was too painful to go through. He feared the day that someone closer to him like Sweet Pea or Toni OD’d. Fangs remained silent however, knowing his protests wouldn’t get him anywhere. He got onto his bike, slipping his helmet on before turning on his bike and following the Serpents.
A sign reading Thanks for visiting Greendale! stood tall and before Fangs on the edge of the road. He sat at a red light, noticing the thinning out of civilization up ahead where the highway began. The train station was to his left and he couldn’t help but look over one more time, hoping to catch even a glimpse of her. Night had fallen hours ago, but the light above the entrance to the station shone bright enough to make out who was going in and leaving the station.
Fangs froze as he noticed the familiar, too full bag. He lifted the visor of his helmet as he squinted towards the entrance. The second the light flashed on her, Fangs confirmed it was her. It was the mystery girl.
Flipping his visor back down over his eyes, Fangs made a U-turn, heading towards the train station. If the Serpents were calling out to him, Fangs couldn’t hear it. His speed increased in a short amount of time, ensuring he got there about a minute after she entered the station. Parking his bike, Fangs threw off his helmet and rushed into the station. This would get the Serpents closer to putting an end to Pokerface’s dealing in Riverdale and Centreville, but also figuring out why he did all of this in the first place.
“Hey!” Fangs called the second he caught sight of her. The girl looked over her shoulder and when they met Fangs’s eyes, they widened and her steps quickened down the stairs. “Stop!” he called to her, quickening his pace.
Although there were few people in the station at this hour, they all seemed to end up in his way. Once he got to the end of the stairs, his eyes found her again. When he was close enough, he grabbed onto her shoulder, stopping her. The girl turned around, her eyes big and full of the same anxiety as he saw in them the first time, “Listen, I don’t know what you want, but I’m not who you’re looking for,” she told him flat out. “I appreciate you and your friends getting me away from those Ghoulies, but there’s nothing I can do for you, I’m sorry.”
“There she is!” Fangs heard behind him just as the girl began to turn towards the platform.
Turning his head, he found a group of Ghoulies heading towards their direction. Panic set deep into his chest, knowing he was completely outnumbered. Behind him the train was screeching to a stop, unloading more passengers onto the platform, blocking the Ghoulies’s path to him, but only for a few seconds. Fangs looked beside him to find the girl turning towards the train. He heard the tones of the train sing, signalling that the doors were going to close in a matter of seconds.
Without a second thought, he turned away from the Ghoulies who were fast approaching and grabbed onto the girl’s hand. He rushed towards the door, the pair of them slipping into the doors just in time. The doors slammed right in the Ghoulies’s face, but as the train began to move, their faces disappeared from Fangs’s sight. His eyes caught sight of the Serpents descending down the stairs and Jughead caught his eye just before the train completely left the station.

The Making of a General: Guy Granville Simonds
By Vincent J. Curtis
Rather than be sent home from Italy humiliated, Simonds instead went to England in January, 1944, as GOC 2nd Canadian Corps. At 41, he was the youngest Corps commander in British Commonwealth forces. Simonds immediately got rid of F.F. Worthington, the father of the Canadian Armoured Corps as GOC 4th Armoured Division, replacing him with George Kitching. He also replaced other McNaughton holdovers.
McNaughton left the Canadian army in Britain poorly trained. Above the company level training was bad, and all-arms combat went unpracticed. Simonds had a lot of preparing to do and little time to do it in. Making matters worse, Crerar was appointed GOC 1st Canadian Army, Simonds’ titular boss, though Montgomery was GOC 21st Army Group, Crerar’s boss.
Simonds began by writing down his battle outlook for his staff, division, and brigade commanders. He described the German method of defense, and held that the key to defeating it lay in repelling its counterattacks while maintaining sufficient reserves that forward movement could be resumed. Any plan had to include forward movement of artillery support. Stylistically, this was refighting the Battle of Hill 70 – bite and hold – with an exploitation phase added. Since divisional artillery could only support one brigade, attacks would be along narrow frontages. That was the standard battle formula.
The 2nd Canadian Corps was activated in France in July, 1944, and Simonds led the Corps through Operations Atlantic, Spring, Totalize, and Tractable before Monty let Crerar on the scene with the activation of the 1st Canadian Army. Atlantic saw the Canadians cross the Orne river, seize the southern half of Caen, and advance towards Verrières Ridge. Spring was the disastrous attempt to seize the ridge, and saw the destruction of the Black Watch and the breaking of the South Saskatchewan Regiment, who were left unsupported on an exposed forward slope of a hill overlooked by German mortars and artillery.
After Spring, Simonds wanted Charles Foulkes, GOC 2nd Div, who was responsible for the debacles (and, coincidentally, an old and future rival), fired. Crerar prevented it, and eventually Foulkes was appointed Simonds’ equal as GOC 1st Canadian Corps, and later CGS after the war ahead of Simonds. Rod Keller was, however, let go as GOC 3rd Div after Totalize, and Simonds fired George Kitching as GOC 4th Div immediately after Tractable. Today, Simonds would be accused of micro-managing his division commanders.
Coming from a military family and spending his entire life in the Regular army, Simonds had probably never been treated with kindness in his life. He seems never to have learned the value of treating subordinates with kindness occasionally. By his own admission, the tightly-wound Simonds was bad tempered, headstrong, and unable to tolerate fools. He maintained a cold, glacial appearance, and he commanded rather than led. He was innovative, hard-driving, and driven himself, as well as ambitious, ruthless, highly self-confident, and arrogant.
Simonds had poisonous personal relations with Crerar, and could not trust him. His Brigade and Divisional commanders simply weren’t as competent as they should have been. The cold, brainy Simonds was probably too impersonal towards his subordinates, commanding where he should have coached or encouraged. When a boss thinks he is surrounded by idiots, the subordinates tend to act accordingly. But after Verrières Ridge, the destruction of Worthington Force, and with Crerar looking to shaft him, it takes a mature man to maintain composure.
As a gunner through and through, Simonds cherished the belief that “artillery conquers, infantry occupies.” Advancing the guns cost him time in his operations – time the Germans used to regroup. He attacked along narrow fronts without thinking that a secondary attack would stretch the German defenses and might create opportunities of its own.
Confining himself to Corps HQ, the formulaic Simonds lacked the battlefield “touch” that Currie demonstrated at 2nd Ypres, and Simonds’ chief antagonist in Normandy, Kurt Meyer, had. His personality, gunner prejudices, and his poorly prepared instrument impaired his operations in Normandy. Still, the technically proficient Simonds was a giant among Canadian generals in World War II.

Phase IB Study of Induction Chemotherapy With XELOX, Followed by Radiation Therapy, Carboplatin, and Everolimus in Patients With Locally Advanced Esophageal Cancer
Purpose: Preclinical studies have shown synergy between everolimus, an mTOR inhibitor, radiation, and platinum agents. We conducted a phase IB trial to determine the recommended phase II dose of everolimus with carboplatin and radiation. Materials and Methods: Patients with stage II/III esophageal cancer were enrolled. Following 2 cycles of Capecitabine/Oxaliplatin (XELOX), patients with no disease progression, received 50.4 Gy in 28 fractions and concurrent weekly carboplatin (area under the curve=2), with escalating doses of everolimus. A standard 3+3 dose escalation design was used. Results: Nineteen patients were enrolled. Two patients were screen failures and 4 were removed due to poor tolerance to XELOX (n=2) or disease progression (n=2). All treated patients had adenocarcinoma. Median age was 58 (44 to 71 y) and 85% were male patients. One patient at dose level 1 was replaced due to ongoing anxiety. One of 6 patients had a dose-limiting toxicity of bowel ischemia that was fatal. At dose level 2, two of 6 patients had a dose-limiting toxicity (fever with neutropenia and nausea). The recommended phase II dose of everolimus was 2.5 mg QOD. Grade ≥3 toxicities included lymphopenia (11%), nausea (10%), low white blood cell (8.0%) vomiting (5.5%), decreased neutrophils (4.0%). All patients achieved an R0 resection with a pathologic response rate of 40% and a pathologic complete response (ypCR) rate of 23%. The 2-year progression-free survival and overall survival were 50% and 49.6%, respectively. Conclusions: The recommended phase II dose of everolimus with concurrent weekly carboplatin and radiation is 2.5 mg QOD. N.F.S., J.L., and A.B.C.: conceptualization.
