San Pedro Belize Public Transportation
As San Pedro Town and the island of Ambergris Caye continue to grow and expand (both in population and tourism), there is an increased need for more services. One of the newly proposed services includes an easier and more affordable way to get around the island. This is the newly proposed public transportation system. A private entity, Taly Corporation, has been actively working on a public transportation system and route for San Pedro & Ambergris Caye going from Mahogany Bay through San Pedro Town, continuing north and heading west to Secret Beach. The Taly Corporation is looking to invest in and set up the Ambergris Caye public transportation system to make it easier and more affordable for people to get around the island (both locals and tourists). The proposed plan will have a portion of the public transportation profits go to a non-profit organization and charities on Ambergris Caye until the initial capital investment is met.
The proposed public transportation project would be under the San Pedro Public Transport Company Ltd. The proposal for the public transportation system is yet to be approved. The plan is to offer island residents and tourists public transportation options besides only taxis or golf cart rentals. Below you can see the current types of transportation used in San Pedro with the % of total use;
San Pedro Ambergris Caye
San Pedro Town on Ambergris Caye, Belize, as of 2015 had an estimated population of approximately 16,444 people. Since then the population has grown with an even higher volume of expats and tourists. Ambergris Caye as a destination (for tourism and residency) has experienced incredible growth over the last 5 to 15 years. From 2017 to 2022 (5 years) Ambergris Caye has seen tourism grow at a rate of 14.6% per year (over double-digit annual growth). Over the same 5 years, Ambergris Caye has seen a population growth rate of over 8% per year, and in the previous 10 years, prior Ambergris Caye and San Pedro experienced an annual population growth rate of 17%. It is estimated that up to 25% more people reside on Ambergris Caye on a part-time basis. The growth in population and tourism has led to the proposed public transportation system.
The public transportation proposal will not require any public funding from the Belizean or the municipality of San Pedro Town. All profits will be donated to local charities and non-profit organizations.
The public transportation system proposed by Taly Corporation will include multiple pricing options, with reduced fares for students, seniors, and people with disabilities. There will also be monthly public transportation passes available as well as single-ride fares.
The Vehicles
The vehicles proposed for the public transportation project are 14–16-seater shuttle buses. The plan is to have the shuttles operating 24/7.
The Public Transportation Routes
The proposed public transportation route will include 20 designated bus stops. The stops will go from Mahogany Bay Village in the south and up to the North at the turnoff to Secret Beach and over to the West Coast. The proposed route will go to and from Mahogany Bay to Secret Beach with 20 total stops. You can see the proposed stops and route below;
The fleet size, the number of vehicles, and the frequency of trips will increase over time as the demand grows. For more information on Belize and Ambergris Caye infrastructure or to learn more about Belize Real Estate contact us at RE/MAX Belize!

10 Best Places To Retire Overseas
Tumblr media
Annual Index: World’s Top 10 Retirement Destinations for 2020 Author and Retirement Expert Kathleen Peddicord Compares International Destinations  in 15 Categories, Including Cost of Living, Real Estate Affordability, Health Care Paris, France – Live and Invest Overseas, the leading overseas investment, real estate and retirement resource for more than 500,000 people around the world, today announced the 10 best places in the world for you to retire, live better, reinvent your life and have a grand adventure in 2020. “These aren’t simply the world’s top retirement havens right now, these are simply the best places to be, regardless of your age or any other circumstances,” said Kathleen Peddicord, author and publisher of Live and Invest Overseas. The Index concentrates on cities (and a couple of regions), rather than whole countries. That’s because a big, diverse country can offer vastly different lifestyles. By concentrating on cities, the Index provides the more specific information needed to make informed decisions. And unlike some other publications, the Index doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to mentioning the potential downsides. If pollution is bad, health care substandard, or cost of living expensive, it’s detailed in the Index. “Many of the new destinations are not well-known and not yet on the mainstream radar,” continued Peddicord. “This means we’ve had to pass on some old favorites and although most remain great options, the rapid rise of some of our new destinations left us with no choice but to leave them out.” Each report in the Overseas Retirement Index ranks the destinations based on 15 categories. These include cost of living, health care, residency options, entertainment, recreation, English spoken, expat community, taxes, real estate affordability, real estate restrictions, infrastructure (Internet, electricity and domestic access), environmental factors, crime and safety, access to North America and climate. And, for the first time in our history, we have a tie. For 2020, we’re naming not one but two best places to retire overseas: Algarve, Portugal and Mazatlán, Mexico.  Here’s how the rest of the list breaks down on an overall basis:   3. Cuenca, Ecuador 4. Valletta, Malta 5. Città Sant’Angelo, Italy 6. Ambergris Caye, Belize 7. San Ignacio, Belize 8. Bled, Slovenia 9. Medellín, Colombia 10. Chiang Mai, Thailand   #1: Algarve, Portugal Cost Of Living: B (Monthly Budget: $2,127.77) Health Care: A+ Affordability Of Real Estate: B Taxes: B Final Grade: A+ For the fifth year running, Algarve, Portugal, remains at the top of the list of world’s best places to retire thanks to its low cost of living, low cost of real estate, great weather, established expat community, user-friendly and low-cost retiree residency program, and endless options for how to meaningfully fill your days and evenings. In addition, you can get by speaking only English (thanks to the region’s strong historic and cultural links with England), and, notably, the stunningly beautiful country is one of the safest places on Earth right now. The country’s Algarve is a unique bit of European geography at the southwestern corner of the continent, at the longitude of Great Britain and the latitude of Delaware. It is protected from winter by the movement of the ocean in the Gulf Stream and, as a result, has the best climate in Europe, with 3,300 hours of sunshine every year, more than any other country in this part of the world. The region boasts some of the world’s best beaches along its 100 miles of Atlantic coast, many awarded coveted Blue Flags from the European Blue Flag Association. In addition, the region is generally recognized as a top golfing destination, with more golf courses per capita than anywhere else on the planet. It was from this coast that Prince Henry the Navigator, an architect of the Age of Exploration, bid his men to "sail on, sail on." Those orders compelled brave adventurers around the Cape of Good Hope to China and India and then across the Atlantic. The infrastructure in the Algarve is top-notch; this is not the developing world. The health care is world-class and a fraction of the cost of care in North America. In fact, health care is free for residents, and establishing residency is easy and cheap for anyone of any age. The Algarve is home to more than 100,000 resident foreign retirees, all here embracing the best of Europe, from medieval towns and fishing villages to open-air markets and local wine. This is a land of cobblestoned streets and whitewashed houses with lace-patterned chimneys, surrounded everywhere by fig, olive, almond, and carob trees. While prices have risen over the four years we’ve been recommending it (most notably for real estate in certain regions), the cost of living in Portugal is on average 30% lower than in any other country in Western Europe. Portugal checks all the boxes and qualifies as a top choice for anyone considering making a move overseas in 2020. Its Algarve coast is certainly your best option on the continent.   #2: Mazatlán, Mexico Cost Of Living: A- (Monthly budget: $1,132.63) Health Care: B+ Affordability Of Real Estate: B+ Taxes: B Final Grade: A+ Tied with Algarve, Portugal, our second pick for the best place to live overseas in the New Year is Mazatlan, Mexico. Over the past four decades, Americans have voted Mexico the world’s #1 place to live or retire in the way that really counts: they’ve packed up and moved there. This country is home to more American expats and retirees than any other, at least 1 million and as many as 2 million, depending on the survey. This shouldn’t surprise anyone. It’s easier for an American to get to Mexico than to any other country other than Canada. Why do Americans choose to go south of the Rio Grande rather than to the Great White North? The weather! Americans looking to start a new life in a new country primarily seek three things: warm weather, beautiful beaches, and a low cost of living. Mexico competes handily in all three categories. While the living is not as cheap as it was in the 1970s when Americans began migrating here in volume, it’s a global bargain and more of a budgeter’s delight right now than it’s been in a long time thanks to the U.S. dollar’s strength against the Mexican peso. The country is familiar, from its administrative set-up (the Mexican government is a stable democracy, with executive, legislative, and judicial branches functioning in a similar way to those in the United States) to its big-footprint shopping. If you’re itching for an adventure in a foreign land that’s not too foreign, Mexico could be the experience you seek. It’s easy to go back and forth, making it a top choice for part-time living. Drive down as often as you like without worrying about plane fare. All the North American attention from both expats and tourists means that many Mexicans, especially in the service industry, speak English. This can make things like navigating the residency process at the immigration office and managing the real estate purchase process with your attorney much easier. Automatic six-month tourist stays and easy and fast immigration make it possible to come and go and spend as much time in the country as you’d like. You can maintain a second home here (and rent it out when you’re not using it yourself) without having to bother with the expense of obtaining formal resident status. You can return easily to the United States to use Medicare. If you’re considering this move as a retiree, nearing or over the age of 65, this can be Mexico’s most compelling advantage. Mexico offers excellent healthcare, but Medicare won’t pay for it—with limited exceptions, Medicare doesn’t cross any border. However, if you retire in Mexico, you’d be only a drive or quick flight away from accessing your benefits. Among this country’s many attractive lifestyle options, Mazatlán stands out. Real city, beautiful beaches, and walkable colonial center... popular expat choice and authentic Mexican resort town that manages to feel homey… Mazatlán has it all. Located about midway along Mexico’s Pacific coast, Mazatlán has been out of favor among tourists and expats for decades but is making a comeback. The renaissance has been focused on the city’s historic center, which has undergone an impressive facelift and now rivals Mazatlán’s 20 miles of beach for attracting attention. From December through March, daytime temperatures in Mazatlán hover in the high 70s, lows are in the low 60s, and there’s little to no rain. Between July and October, on the other hand, temperatures are regularly 90 degrees and warmer, and humidity levels are higher. This makes Mazatlán an ideal choice for snowbirding. Moving to Mexico is as hassle-free as any international move can get. Nothing’s as easy as loading up a truck and driving south. Your entire moving budget could be just gas and tolls.   #3: Cuenca, Ecuador Cost Of Living: A+ (Monthly Budget: $1,230.00) Health Care: A- Affordability Of Real Estate: A Taxes: B- Final Grade: A+   #4: Valletta, Malta Cost Of Living: B (Monthly Budget: $2,043.80) Health Care: A+ Affordability Of Real Estate: C- Taxes: A Final Grade: A   #5: Citta Sant’ Angelo, Italy Cost Of Living: B+ (Monthly Budget: $1,533.33) Health Care: A+ Affordability Of Real Estate: B Taxes: C Final Grade: A   #6: Ambergris Caye, Belize Cost of Living: B- (Monthly Budget: $2,170.00) Health Care: D Affordability Of Real Estate: C Taxes: A+ Final Grade: A   #7: San Ignacio, Belize Cost Of Living: B (Monthly Budget: $1,692.50) Health Care: D Affordability Of Real Estate: A- Taxes: A+ Final Grade: A-   #8 Bled, Slovenia Cost of Living: B- (Monthly Budget: $1,856.88) Health Care: A- Affordability Of Real Estate: C+ Taxes: C Final Grade: A-   #9 Medellin, Colombia Cost of Living: B (Monthly Budget: $1,605.09) Health Care: A+ Affordability Of Real Estate: B- Taxes: B Final Grade: A-   #10 Chiang Mai, Thailand Cost of Living: A (Monthly Budget: $1,061.19) Health Care: A+ Affordability Of Real Estate: B Taxes: A- Final Grade: A- About Live and Invest Overseas Based in Paris, France and Panama City, Panama, LIOS is the leading resource for people who want to live, retire and invest overseas. For months we kept our intentions under our hats, thinking that we did not want to be caught off guard and not be able to answer our friends & families questions. We also wanted to be certain that this was something that we actually wanted to do!!
Our original plan (after months & months of research on my part) was to move to Belize. Belize is a small country, about the size of Massachusettes, which is South of the East coast of Mexico. We thought it sounded great because it is the only English speaking country in Central America and I cannot begin to tell you how many posts I read about how wonderful and friendly the people are, so we thought this sounded amazing.
Tumblr media
When we made our plans to visit Belize, we had a few areas in mind. Most people vacationing in Belize go to Ambergris Caye, which is a beautiful island with diving, snorkeling, boating and all kinds of great water fun.  Not us!!  First of all, it is much more expensive to live as an Expat on Ambergris Caye, but there is no hospital there and with Rich’s health issues, it could take 4-5 HOURS to get him into Mexico where there is good healthcare, so Ambergris was not an option for us.
We had planned to go to Corazol which is the Northernmost city in Belize, just over the border from Chetumal, México. We had heard lovely things about Corazol and were really looking forward to spending the beginning of our Belize trip there and then moving on to San Ignacio, which is located on the border with Guatemala and then later to the beach in Placencia, Belize.
Corazol Bay
We had made our travel plans for late April into May 2017 had gotten our passports, and were so anxious to go visit Belize!! We had such high hopes!! Flying into Belize I took a ton of photos from above and then got a few shots on the ground of the very tiny “International Airport”. We rented our car and we were off!! Due North to Corazol! We thought the drive was supposed to take 2 1/2 hours, but it just went on & on & on with many road bumps along the way, literally and figuratively!! We saw many dilapidated houses that did not have roofs…some with no walls, but we tried to remain positive. Then we saw starving horses and cows with no grass in the fields.  (I wish now that I would have taken photos of the houses and the town, but I did not think about it at the time and was not planning on doing the blog at that time so I will add the photos that I have).
We stopped to eat at a little Mom & Pop place on the side of the road and found that Rice & Beans or Beans & Rice (which is the motto of the Belize food scene) really was true, but it was good because we were starving with dehydration coming quickly along!! So there we sat eating on the side of the road with tomorrow’s probable dinner running around at our feet (Chickens)!! We felt better after having some much-needed lunch and eventually made it to The Almond Tree Hotel which was fantastic compared to what we have seen so far!!

Vietnam’s Hoi An amongst world’s finest locations for expats
Vietnam’s Hoi An amongst world’s finest locations for expats The traditional city of Hoi An is captured from above. Picture by VnExpress/Vo Rin
Hoi An has been ranked 14th amongst 20 finest locations on the planet for expatriates to stay by the The Journey web site.
The web site mentions the traditional city’s “low-cost price of dwelling” as making it a great place for expats to remain in.
Based on the Canada-based journey website, Hoi An within the central province of Quang Nam is the most effective candidate for budget-conscious foreigners who wish to calm down in Vietnam.
An condo near the river in Hoi An will price simply $458 a month and whereas month-to-month meals expenditure could be about $450. Therefore, month-to-month dwelling prices in Hoi An might be managed inside $1,000, the location says.
Cuenca in Ecuador topped the record, adopted by Ambergris Caye in Belize, the Philippines’s Tagaytay and Ljubljana in Slovenia.
Indonesia’s Bali made it into the highest 10 whereas Cambodia got here within the 11th on the record and Penang of Malaysia secured the 16th place.
The rankings are primarily based on knowledge garnered from Stay and Make investments Abroad, which calls itself the world’s “most trusted, most skilled, and savviest supply for data on worldwide dwelling, retiring overseas, and investing,” and Numbeo, the world’s largest database of consumer contributed knowledge about cities and nations worldwide.
Hoi An’s rising recognition as a high journey vacation spot has been confirmed by earlier international rankings by prestigious journey magazines and newspapers.

One minute stroll by means of land of historic secrets and techniques
British newspaper The Telegraph final week named Hoi An amongst world’s least expensive international locations, citing the Put up Workplace’s annual Lengthy Haul Vacation Report.
U.S. information community CNN not too long ago listed Hoi An as one of many 16 finest locations on the planet to chill out and de-stress.
Hoi An ranked second in an inventory of the 10 most secure and most enjoyable locations on this earth for solo vacationers compiled by journey editors at Momondo, a U.Okay.-based journey website.
In 2016, the traditional city was hailed as the most affordable journey vacation spot by price range tourism website Value of Journey, with every day bills for a backpacker estimated at $22.29.

The Exodus of Americans Moving to Belize
Tumblr media
Every year, more-and-more people are looking at investing and relocating off-shore. Whether it is for lifestyle or retirement, Americans & Canadians are rethinking their lives and where in the world would provide the best future. This is shown by the recent migration stats.
Americans & Canadians are leaving their home countries and seeking foreign visas in record numbers, according to immigration lawyers and expatriate organizations. Belize saw an unprecedented number of Americans not only inquiring about Belize real estate but also following through on their pledge and taking the steps to leave over the last 3-years (2020, 2021 & 2022). This is seen by the growth in the expat population on Ambergris Caye over recent years.
The number of Americans who were recorded as having given up their citizenship or U.S. residency soared to 5,816 in the first six months of 2020, compared with 2,072 in all of 2019, according to data from the Internal Revenue Service.
Dan Prescher, the senior editor of Internationalliving.com, said traffic related to “how to move out of the U.S.” surged 1,676 percent in 2020 and has been a continued trend since.
“Quieter, more stable countries start to look appealing,” he said.
The exodus has been led by not only baby boomer expats, but also young professionals looking for an opportunity and parents looking for countries with open and safe schools that provide futures for their children. No matter the age, the group largely consists of Americans with financial means and the ability to work virtually, or are in a position to relocate.
Why are people leaving?
The U.S. State Department reported in April that there are a record 8.7 million Americans live abroad. This number alone speaks for itself – never before has such a large group of U.S.-born citizens lived abroad. They’ve decided that it’s time for a change, to move to a new location where they are able to not just survive but thrive.
People’s motives for leaving or seeking relocation differ. But overall, the objective is a better life and a more promising future. The IMMI Group analyzed the top 10 motives for leaving the US, the list includes;
Money
Cost of healthcare
Taxes
Government regulations
Freedom
Why People Are Looking at Belize & Ambergris Caye
Belize Real Estate & most of all Ambergris Caye Real Estate have seen a boom over recent years. Most of the buyers are people looking at living and/or investing overseas. This is seen by the growth in Belize real estate transactions over recent years;
While there is no nationwide MLS for Belize to track the total sales data and the number of real estate transactions, RE/MAX Belize is the largest real estate company in Belize with over 100 agents in 13 offices and shows a good indication of where the market is at and how it has grown.
Total sales volume increased 8.7% from 2019 to 2020, followed by a staggering 167.7% from 2020 to 2021.  Based on current year-end projections, sales volume and real estate transactions in Belize are expected to grow by 301.5% year-over-year from 2021 through 2022.
From the beginning of 2020, at the start of the COVID pandemic, through to 2021, total Belize real estate sales volume has increased by 190.94%.
For RE/MAX Belize, the market has seen the number of sales exceed 2019 total sales volumes by 300% (299.6%).
Potential buyers are increasingly younger with more-and-more buyers being in their 40’s and 50’s (compared to retirees of earlier years).  Most of the people purchasing Belize real estate are from the US and Canada. Among the top reasons for considering Belize for second homeownership:
Allows diversification outside the USA or Canada
Provides a safe secure alternative during societal unrest
The only English-speaking country in Central America
Close geographic proximity to the USA
No capital gains tax, very low property taxes
Tropical Caribbean climate
World-class fishing, diving, snorkeling, and watersports
Second home ownership in Belize is like “going abroad with training wheels”.  It’s a very safe and easy experience, and the number one comment from those who have done it is that they wish they had done so sooner.
Ambergris Caye Relocation
The top reasons people choose Belize and Ambergris Caye real estate include;
Safety
Tax protection
Accepting of new residence
Stable political climate
Affordability
English speaking
Schools & Education
Racial and cultural diversity and acceptance
Currency pegged 2:1 with USD
Climate
Opportunities and room to grow
Freedom!
Many countries have restricted accessibility to residency, which makes travel and relocation more difficult. Not Belize. Right now Belize is open and accepting tourists, expats seeking offshore residency, and citizens. Belize is a small country that is very pro-foreign investment with a small population. The country’s agricultural independence and desirable climate make it one of the top destinations for Americans & Canadians seeking relocation.
There are many other thriving places to make a life. This has led to many people seeking a brighter tomorrow, a life that provides freedom, safety, security, and support

In the last edition ,under supervision by the Head Gardener, Rose, I hung the string on some of the hooks on the roof beams and Rose got to work fashioning a trellis for some of the tomatoes and cucumbers we are trying to grow . We then waited for the plants to entwine themselves with the trellis and grow , hopefully produce flowers that would help to pollinate and eventually producing tomatoes…

With our greenhouse built and named it was time for the hard work to begin. Covering the tree trunks and branches in the raised beds. For as long as I can remember I’ve been an early riser.
