Chapters: 1/6 Fandom: The Saint (1997), Mission: Impossible (Movies) Rating: Explicit Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Ethan Hunt/Simon Templar (The Saint) Characters: Ethan Hunt, Simon Templar Additional Tags: 5+1 Things, Trust, Canon-Typical Violence, Trauma triggers, Dissociation, Bondage, Sensation Play, Rimming, oversensitivity, showering together, Stabbing, Drugs, wound care, comfort after a nightmare, (wow this sounds so much worse than it is I swear), discussion of identity, Discussion of self-worth, Post-Mission: Impossible III, Post-Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (2011), Pre-Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (2015), (mostly) Summary:
Five times Simon Templar shows something of himself to Ethan Hunt, and one time Ethan shows something of who and what he is to Simon.
I didn’t lie, because while this is in the same verse as if you ever leave, I’m coming with you, it is not part of the mini-series! In fact, it is… probably starting a new mini-series—shut up. It’s fine. I have control of my life.
The previous fics will give you a better grasp on the background to this story because they chronicle how these two get together and how they fall in love from both of their perspectives, but if you don’t want to read them: Simon Templar—oft-named whatever he dang well pleases—and Ethan Hunt are in a long term relationship and In Love. That’s it, that’s what you need to know to understand what is going on here.
Though, speaking of the same general verse and timeline, I would like to take a moment to direct you over to @oathkeeperoxas’s SaintSpy fics (believe in you, which is an MI3 rewrite in this same timeline—a claim I happily make with Serie’s permission—and its sequel, thunder only happens when it’s raining), which are not required reading to understand what is happening here, but are required reading for the discerning SaintSpy fan, and essential if you want the full timeline. Go on! They’re so fun! I’ll wait.
You back? Good. We’re gonna be doing an every other day update schedule. The fic is complete, but it’s pretty long, and each part stands fairly well on its own! Thank you to Serie, @leewardly, and @doodledrawreblogs for their essential betaing assistance, and @lightsabersandpens for the endless cheerleading! Love you all!
Title is from Mary Oliver’s “The Whistler,” which is a beautiful poem I recommend.
Okay I think that’s all. On with the fic!

I loved how you did those short stories.
I would like to know if you could make a list of the different characters that could be put together with those of Val Kilmer and Tom Cruise
and if you could do one of bruce banner (val kilmer) with some tom character.

 Bill Hartford x Virgil Adamson
Stacee Jaxx x Danny Parker.

Chapters: 1/3 Fandom: The Saint (1997), Mission: Impossible (Movies) Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Ethan Hunt/Simon Templar (The Saint), Ethan Hunt & Emma Russell, Emma Russell & Simon Templar Characters: Ethan Hunt, Simon Templar, Emma Russell (The Saint) Additional Tags: Crossover, Canon-Typical Violence, Canon-Typical Action, Established Relationship, discussion of identity, past Simon/Emma, Discussion of Canon Medical Condition, Emma Does Not Deserve This For Multiple Reasons Summary:
Dr. Emma Russell ends up with a bounty on her head for a bomb she can’t build. Ethan Hunt is assigned to protect her. The man sometimes known as Simon Templar tags along.
SO! I started this fic… oh, definitely while I was writing the first SaintSpy mini-series in Serie’s and my timeline. It was supposed to be very short.
…Anyway.
In terms of M:I timeline, this fic happens about a month before the opening of M:I Rogue Nation. In terms of the SaintSpy extended timeline Serie and I are writing, it falls between Chapter 5 and Chapter 6 (the +1) in Lovely Whistler.
Thank you as always to @oathkeeperoxas and @leewardly for their time and effort combing through this thing looking for places I could improve it. It’s infinitely better due to both of your perspectives. Also, if anyone’s curious, the title’s from Landslide by Fleetwood Mac. I know, I know, but bear with me, it’s very very appropriate LOL
This thing’s complete, and we’ve got three chapters on it! I’ll post every other day. <3 Enjoy!

...has anyone prompted 4. Hand kiss?
They have not! Please find below my take on a silly little scenario @oathkeeperoxas and I have been playing around with for a bit to make ourselves laugh. For once, I make no promises that this is in fact actually 'canon' to the timeline, because I don't know Serie's own plans for this little idea, and as of now I have NO plans to continue it even though it fully could be continued. But! Enjoy anyway.

4. Hand kiss
There are lots of things that nobody told Bart about joining up with the IMF. There are literally no real days off, for one thing—unless you’re flat out incapable of taking a mission due to injury or illness, if something comes up, you will be contacted with the details. Another is that there is, actually, an extensive training process even beyond passing the field exam—you pass, and then you are assigned to a more experienced agent for a series of milk runs, first with just them and then with a team, increasing in intensity until you’re good enough to just be placed and ignored.
A third is that you are expected to enjoy milk runs as an exchange for actual time off. Bart kind of thinks this is unfair—what’s the point of giving them PTO then?
The pay’s good at least.
Anyway, this is Bart’s third mission with his assigned mentor, and to be honest, it could be much worse. Ethan’s experienced—used to be a trainer himself, even—and personable, makes sure that even on low level fact finding missions like this one to come along with Bart, do all the boring shit right along with him, so Bart feels like part of the team. And, best yet, Ethan also finds this shit boring as all hell, so he’ll find tons of excuses to leave the safehouse and get some fresh air.
“Now remember,” Ethan’s saying, arm over Bart’s shoulder as he steers him down the street, “it’s an important part of your job to lean into your cover. We’re tourists here, so we are going to schedule in time to be seen as tourists.”
Bart thinks this may just be that Ethan wants a pastry, and needs a reason why getting one is professional to demonstrate for the newbie, so he nods very seriously. “Got it,” he says, and grins when Ethan claps him on the back.
“Good man,” he says. “I’ve scoped out the local tourist places and it’d be ridiculous to come to Provence and not go to a single bakery, so we’re starting here.” He steers them to a door and shoves it open, little tinkling bell announcing their presence, and cheerfully greets the staff in perfect if slightly accented French—
And then freezes, eyes zeroing in on the man behind the counter.
Bart is immediately on alert, glancing around the room—exit behind them, exit through the window on the left. There’s probably a door behind the man on the other side of the kitchen, and a chair could be used as a weapon, along with the knives for the cakes in the display case in front of them. What had Ethan seen, he wonders, eyes sliding over the man, trying to come up with any sort of threat—
The man is holding what looks like some bread, watching Ethan with dark eyes wide in a classically handsome face. Middle aged, Bart thinks. Tall—maybe about six foot—and lean, so he keeps in shape. The man puts the bread down slowly, eyes still on Ethan, and smiles.
“Hello,” he says, and it takes a moment for Bart to remember this is probably a response to Ethan’s initial salutation. “My name’s Honoré Amiens. Welcome to my family’s bakery—I do not believe I have seen you here before?”
“No,” Ethan says faintly, and then shakes his head, walking up to the counter. “No, we’re just passing through.”
“Well, welcome,” Amiens says again. He has not looked away from Ethan once. “Do let me know if there’s anything I can help you with.”
…Oh, Bart thinks, and then rolls his eyes. Ethan’s smiling, leaning forward a little bit—that’s definitely flirting. Great. Bart wonders what lesson Ethan will pull out of his ass for this one.
“Are you a local?” Ethan asks. Amiens nods agreeably, eyes sliding down Ethan’s arms to his hands resting on the counter and then up to his eyes.
“Yes,” he says. “My family has had this bakery for… oh, generations now.” He smiles back, definitely flirty. “I’m named after the patron saint of bakers, in fact—my parents were fairly sure I’d take to it.”
“I’m not surprised,” Ethan says.
“Ah, do you think it suits me?” Amiens asks, smiling widening. “Monsieur, I don’t believe I have caught your name yet.”
“It’s Ethan,” Ethan says, holding out a hand. “Ethan Hunt. And with me is Bart Sommers, my friend.”
Amiens glances at Bart and then away—obviously supremely uninterested in him. “A pleasure,” he says, and takes Ethan’s hand—
—and kisses the back of it, like Ethan’s some sort of maiden in a classical drama. Ethan flushes just a little, even, like he’s actually going to swoon.
“I’d like a croissant,” Bart says, and the two of them startle a little, like they’d just remembered he can speak. Bart rolls his eyes.
“Yes, Monsieur,” Amiens says smoothly, and disengages. “One moment, please.”
He turns to reach behind him, bends down to pick up a bag.
Ethan, of course, watches the movement like a hawk. There’s a strange look on his face—somewhere between resigned and amused, definitely interested. Bart genuinely isn’t sure what he’s thinking, and he also isn’t sure what exactly he should be doing about it.
“Would you like anything?” he asks Ethan, pointedly, and Ethan glances his way—the amusement in his expression grows.
“Not right now,” he says, and turns back to Amiens as the man finishes putting a fresh, crisp pastry in a bag and placing it on the counter. “I’ll get something next time. We’re pretty likely to be back.”
“Good,” Amiens purrs, and Bart sighs as Ethan hands over a credit card.
Maybe this will be a more interesting mission than he thought.

You got it, dear!

14. Kiss on the back of the knee
Simon has his feet firmly on the ground, and Ethan is most of the way down the ladder up the manhole towards the street, when their pursuers catch up to them.
Above Simon, Ethan freezes, going still and silent all at once, one foot hovering over the rung it was about to fall onto heavily. Below him, Simon feels himself freeze too—his breaths stop and then start again, low and deep; his hands bracketing Ethan’s calves clenching on the old metal to stop any vibration there.
“—way did they go?” one of the goons above them is yelling, clearly at the end of his rope. Well, Simon can relate to that—he and Ethan were supposed to be on vacation, not uncovering secret drug rings in fucking Sweden of all places. Simon’s in fucking sturdy blue jeans, which were not really designed for quick and stealthy movement. Ethan’s in shorts and hiking boots.
“—sure they came this way,” a different goon is saying. “There’s nowhere else for them to go!”
“There’s no exit,” goon three complains, even as he comes to a stop on the grate they are directly beneat. “What did they do, fucking fly over the wall?”
Amateurs. Simon sighs silently, and carefully lays his head on Ethan’s lower thigh—just to express his exasperation with the situation. Above him, Ethan’s shaking with silent laughter.
“They must have climbed it,” goon one says. “Get over the wall now! Move it!”
There’s the sound of something being thrown, and then the thud of pounding feet towards what must be the wall of the alley they’re in, followed by grunting as three grown men—presumably—attempt to haul themselves up and over a wall Ethan and Simon had taken one look at before opting to pry the manhole open instead. Ethan’s shaking intensifies. Simon grins, and presses his lips—a little ticklish—to the back of Ethan’s bare knee.
They wait a solid minute as the sounds of their pursuers fade, and then Ethan grips the sides of the ladder and simply slides down the rest of the way, landing in front of Simon on the metal platform.
“New kiss time,” Simon whispers, and is elbowed in the ribs for his trouble.
“Not the time,” Ethan hisses back, but when he turns around his eyes are dancing. “Why are you thinking about that right now?”
“Kissing you?” Simon asks, as they follow the platform down along the sewer, bent low and ignoring the smell. “I’m usually thinking about kissing you.”
Ethan scoffs. “Good kiss,” he admits. “Not sure how I’m gonna reciprocate that one without this exact scenario happening again.”
“Behind my knee?”
“Yeah.”
Simon grins. “I mean,” he says, leans over to drop another kiss on the back of Ethan’s head, once and quickly. “I think there are other positions where it’d be accessible.”
In front of Simon, Ethan pauses. “Oh yeah?”
“Mmmmm.” Simon feels his eyelids lower, lets his voice deepen into something of a purr. “This is all very inconvenient, Ethan. If we weren’t currently running from drug runners, I’d say: let’s go back to the hotel room, and I’ll offer a demonstration.”
“Huh,” Ethan says.
“Unless you think we can be finished with these losers quickly,” Simon starts to muse—
He’s interrupted by Ethan turning around, putting one broad hand on the nape of Simon’s neck, and hauling him into a deep kiss.
“First to find their hideout gets first use of the shower,” Ethan says, right up against Simon’s lips—
And then he takes off down the platform.
“Cheater,” Simon calls.
He’s answered by laughter.
Oh, well, he thinks, giving chase. To be honest, there aren’t really any downsides to losing this one.

36. Fierce Kiss
Ethan finds Simon on their patio, sitting on a lounge chair with Cat in his lap, staring up at the stars. Truth told, he’s not really seeing them—it’s just something to look at that isn’t Ethan and their… call them guests, bent over his kitchen table with maps and tablets and reports and read-outs, heads bent together in tense, low discussion. “Are they gone?” he asks before Ethan can even start to say anything.
Ethan gives a long, drawn-out sigh. “They’re gone,” he says. He sounds tired and tense—well, Simon is too.
Cat heaves a big doggy sigh, shifting around to put her head on Simon’s chest. Simon runs his fingers down over her head the way she likes, letting her weight and the steady beat of her heart settle him a little. “And are they coming back?” he asks, still not looking over at his husband. “And if they don’t, when do you think the next group will?”
“Sweetheart,” Ethan says. “I didn’t give them our address to put on the list of safehouses.”
“You shouldn’t have given them our address at all,” Simon points out.
There’s a long, tired sigh. “I thought,” Ethan says, from where he’s standing behind Simon, “that when I indicated that I wanted to retire they’d actually respect the request.”
Simon scoffs. “Well, you were really fooling yourself, Ethan,” he says. Ethan still hasn’t walked around to where Simon can see him. That’s fair, Simon thinks. He still hasn’t turned around—
“You’re right,” Ethan says.
Simon stills all at once. “...Come again?” he says.
“You’re right,” Ethan repeats. He sounds absolutely exhausted now, tension threaded through his tone—no, not tension, Simon was wrong about that. He finally turns his head, glancing up at his husband—ah.
Not stress. Anger.
Maybe more than anger.
“I should’ve just refused to give them my address,” Ethan’s saying, and reaches up to rub at his face. “I know what they’re like. How many times did I have to just flat out refuse to answer a phone when we went on vacation? No boundaries at all.”
Simon takes a deep breath, letting his own tension fall from him all at once. It takes some of his own anger with it—and some fear. Ethan isn’t thinking about getting back in, and he certainly isn’t doing it without talking to Simon first. “Do we know if they were followed?” he asks—next on his list of concerns.
“They weren’t,” Ethan says. “I checked, and then I called Benji and Luther and had them check. They apologized, even—they didn’t realize this wasn’t a safehouse.”
“Why would they?” Simon asks, still stroking down Cat’s head and ears. “Apparently, we’re listed as a safehouse.”
“About that,” Ethan says. “Can you check over the updates to our security, and then take us off that list? Actually—actually can you take out address out of the system entirely?”
“...I’m sorry?” Simon asks.
“Take us out of the system,” Ethan says, coming around to sit down on the armrest of Simon’s lounger. “Like you do with references to yourself. I’ll—just reregister where they should send absentee ballots or something. We can get an apartment in the States—let them send agents there instead of to my home where my husband and dog live—”
Simon reaches up, grabs the front of Ethan’s shirt, and hauls Ethan down into a fierce kiss, hard deep and breathless. Between them, Cat squirms, and then her tongue licks at Simon’s chin—asking to be released. Simon breaks the kiss with a laugh, pulling away just enough to let her jump off his lap. “Sorry, kitty-Cat,” he says, and then promptly pulls Ethan back in again. He smiles to feel Ethan flailing, attempting to arrange himself so he’s not half-falling onto Simon’s lap. He swings a leg over Simon’s and settles down in the space Cat vacated, hands braced on the lounger to stop him squashing Simon. Simon slides his fingers into Ethan’s hair, holding him just where he is. “I can do that,” he says, right up against Ethan’s lips. “Absolutely any time.” He punctuates it with another deep, hungry kiss, just to drive the point home, before finally releasing Ethan and letting him pull away enough to catch his breath.
“Wow,” Ethan says, blinking at him like he’d been smacked with a two-by-four. “Uh. Remind me to talk about buying apartments more often!”
“Yeah,” Simon says automatically. “Real estate really does it for me.”
“Noted,” Ethan says, and then they’re kissing again, drawn together like magnets, the kisses slowing but no less intense.
“Tell me you want me to wipe you from the IMF database again,” Simon whispers. “That was really hot. Extremely sexy.”
Ethan laughs, and kisses him, and kisses him.
-
Simon checks Ethan’s security changes later that night. By the morning, Ethan Hunt’s known address has vanished from all IMF servers.
They find themselves unable to keep a record of it ever again.

27, 59, or 82 for the kisses? 😘
And finishing the final two here (first one responded to yesterday). As usual, a continuation of the 'verse started in this reblog! Send me kisses for SaintSpy May, y'all!

27. Bloody kiss; 59. Post-fight kiss
“At some point, I am going to teach you to run,” Michael snaps over comms.
“I’m running! I’m running right now,” Ethan snaps back, and reaches out to grab a light pole, using it to pivot his momentum around a corner as another hail of gunfire chases him.
He fires over his shoulder twice to discourage close pursuit, dashing down an alley and towards a gate. There’s blood in his mouth—not relevant right now. Another shot, and the lock blasts off. Ethan shoulders through it and keeps going, kicking it closed behind him. There’s a house—great. Another shot and he’s through the front door, running straight through to the kitchen he can see through an arch in the back.
“Don’t give me that. You engaged them,” Michael says.
“Better me than a civilian!” Nobody here, thank god. He ducks around the arch as more gunfire starts up behind him, turning left to blow through the glass of a window over the counter instead of making for the backdoor. He vaults himself up and through, finds himself back in the enclosed courtyard, makes for the gate again—this time to climb over it.
“Yeah,” Michael says, furious. “That. That’s what I mean. They won’t shoot you if they don’t see you. Learn to fucking run—there you are!”
Tires screeching as a pick-up truck comes to a stop in front of Ethan, and then Michael’s shoved the door open and is aiming—behind Ethan, firing a rifle as Ethan throws himself at the gate and starts to climb. He vaults himself over the top and lands on the ground still running, low under Michael’s fire until he gets to the door and Michael shoves himself back into the driver’s seat. He dives in as Michael peels away and slams the door shut, fire following them down the little alley and out into the main street.
“Keep your head down and let me get us out of here,” Michael says, and Ethan does as he’s told, releasing the clip on his gun and reloading as he pants. “There’s blood on your lips.”
“Elbow to the face,” Ethan explains. “I’m fine.”
“For fuck’s sake, Ethan,” Michael snaps, and then devolves into swearing in Turkish as he takes a sharp turn and guns the engine towards the freeway, just as more fire starts out to their left.
Ethan picks up the rifle and starts to roll down the window—
“Stay down!”
Ethan rolls the window back up.
“I didn’t even carry a gun on jobs until you started coming,” Micheal continues to rant, pulling onto the freeway and sliding into the far lane, weaving in and out of traffic. “Because when someone pulled a gun, I left.”
“We were in a crowd—” Ethan tries.
“You’re a trained espionage agent,” Michael interrupts. “Lose them!”
“There were civilians—”
“You,” Micheal interrupts again, hauling them out at the nearest exit and taking a winding path out into the middle of the Spanish countryside, “are currently a civilian. We are committing a crime, Ethan. None of these people have a reason to pull punches—”
“Which is why I drew the fire,” Ethan says stubbornly.
“If they can’t find you, they will stop firing,” Michael says, and his voice hasn’t raised above a very forceful indoor voice, but Ethan still feels like he’s being yelled at. “This is a mess, Ethan. Now we have to fucking shake them, and they know what truck I’m driving, and you’re injured, because you couldn’t just let them walk away—” He pulls over very abruptly and stops the truck. “Out.”
Ethan blinks.
“New car, out out out,” Michael says impatiently, and Ethan realizes they’ve pulled up alongside an old junker on the side of the road.
“Is that thing even going to start?” Ethan asks incredulously.
“I planted it, yes,” Michael says, and reaches down to grab a suitcase, letting himself out the door. “Hurry up!”
Ethan hurries up, grabbing the rifle and his empty clip on the way out—no point making this easy for anyone. The door to the new car is unlocked, and Michael drops the suitcase into Ethan’s lap as he gets in, starts the car without a key and takes off down the road in the opposite direction to the one they were driving in.
“Head down,” he grits out. “They don’t know what I look like.”
“I’m sorry,” Ethan says.
“Good,” Michael responds, and for about half an hour they drive in absolute silence.
Finally, Michael pulls them back onto the freeway, and then off again about four exits later. “New car again,” he says shortly, and they pile out and pile back into another pickup truck, Ethan taking a minute to fuss with the suitcase to make sure it’s secure—
Michael closes the door on the driver’s side, reaches over, and hauls Ethan into a kiss.
Ethan blinks, and then kisses back, ignoring the way his mouth starts bleeding again at the pressure.
“I’m glad you’re okay,” Michael says, against his mouth.
“I’m sorry I fucked up your job,” Ethan responds. He is, honestly. At the time, he’d played the odds through his head, and it had seemed like the safest course of action to just try to control the scenario, but—
“You didn’t,” Michael says, and nudges the suitcase with his foot. He gives a wry smile. “You fucked up the getaway.”
“I’m sorry I fucked up the getaway,” Ethan corrects himself obediently.
Michael kisses him again, which feels a little bit like a reward. “Next time you run, or you don’t get to come again,” he warns as he pulls back, turning over the engine and starting back in yet a third direction.
“That’s fair,” Ethan agrees. Michael now has a little blood on his own mouth. Ethan wonders vaguely if it’s strange that he finds that attractive. “And hey, you got a new kiss type out of it?”
“I’m not sure I want to count ‘kiss involving blood’,” Michael says wryly,
“I meant,” Ethan says, “post-fight kiss?”
Michael side-eyes him.
“Maybe?” Ethan tries again, attempting to smile disarmingly.
“Hm,” Michael says.
“I really am sorry.”
Michael turns back to the road. “I’ll count it for now. If you’re very, very good the rest of the time.”
Relief. Ethan collapses back into the seat, smiling. “I’ll make it up to you.”
“You better.”
“I will,” Ethan insists. “Did you know you look really hot with blood on your teeth?”
Michael pauses at a crossroads to drop his head onto the steering wheel, something of an incredulous laugh startled out of him. “Why do I like you?” he asks, but he’s smiling.
Ethan grins wider. “If you find a good place to pull over,” I’ll show you.
“Hm,” Michael says again, and turns right. Ethan’s pretty sure he’s won. “We’ll see.”

@oathkeeperoxas asked for 72. "Kiss me" for SaintSpy May! You got it, my friend! Send me a kiss for SaintSpy May!

72. “Kiss me”
A fun fact about Jude’s husband is that—not only can he not sing, he needs to be actively discouraged from doing so any time the mood takes him. Which is, unfortunately, far, far too often.
A fun fact about Jude is that he is terrible at doing this.
Case in point, Ethan is in their kitchen right now, their puppy in his arms, caterwauling—heh—an old pop song to her as he rocks her around like a baby and she occasionally stretches her long neck and snout up to lick at Ethan’s chin enthusiastically. Jude has no idea how this happened, and frankly he’s not sure he should ask.
“Kiss meeeeeee, beneath the milky twilight,” Ethan sings, forte and unforgivably off-key, pausing to accept more licks with a laugh. “Lead meeeeeee out on the moonlit flooooor—”
Jude really needs to put a stop to this for the sake of his ears. The issue is that it’s really, really cute.
“Lift your open haaaaand,” Ethan croons—very very badly—at their puppy, and leans down to drop a few kisses on Cat’s little paw. Cat licks him straight on the mouth, tail wagging so hard it’s thumping off Ethan’s chest. “Strike up the baaaaaand, and make the fireflies daaaaaaaance,” he pauses. “Uh. Something something soooomething—” He drops some more kisses on their very over-excited puppy’s head.
“Silver moon’s sparkling,” Jude offers from the door—spoken, not sung. Ethan looks up and grins at him, not at all surprised to know Jude’s lurking just outside the room.
“Thank you. Silver moon’s spaaaarkliiiiiing,” he adds, in what probably is supposed to be sung. Jude shakes his head, finally letting himself into the room as Ethan drops so more kisses on Cat’s little ears, holding onto her as she wiggles, eyes cutting back to Jude as he does. “So kiiiiiss meeeee—”
“If it will shut you up,” Jude allows, and leans over as Ethan straightens up, taking a slow, languid kiss, enjoying Ethan’s smile up against his lips—
—and reaching up to catch their kitty-Cat, as the presence of both her dads in close proximity this far above the ground becomes too much for her, and she wriggles so excitedly she nearly slips out of Ethan’s arms.
Cat makes a tiny puppy vocalization—a rolling little roorawwwroo that sounds just a little like the song Ethan had been singing—ah.
“Are you singing, little girl?” Jude asks, pulling away to grin down at Cat. “You sound much better than your dad, I’m going to be honest—” Ethan cracks up. Jude grins and continues. “—but you should be using your pillow! Where’s your pillow, noodle, hm?”
“Over in the corner,” Ethan says. “She was making noise around it.”
“Ah,” Jude says, and Ethan lets him take the puppy from him. He wanders over to the corner near the window and picks up the pillow, offering it to Cat as she makes another noise. She chomps down on it. “What a good girl,” he says, crooning—positive reinforcement of good behaviors, instead of the behavior you don’t want your dog to do, like all the books he’s been reading say to do. “Very good pillow. Yes!”
Ethan’s arms slide around his waist from behind. He—does some approximation of humming the song again. A few bars. So kiss me.
Jude sighs, and turns to comply. Probably, this is why Ethan continues this behavior Jude would prefer he stop.
Ah, well. Jude supposes he can live with the singing, in the end.

78. Interrupted kiss (x2)
“Rawowowowowaaaaaaar,” Cat says from her sleep crate, very loudly and forlornly.
Ethan pulls his pillow out from behind his head and shoves it over his face. Maybe, he thinks, he can just smother himself, and then he will be free of their new puppy crying for what has felt like eight solid hours for the third straight night in a row.
“She just never stops,” his husband says from next to him, bow-string taut and plaintive at the same time.
“She will,” Ethan insists through is pillow. Cat hits a particularly impressive high note. He grits his teeth through it, and then continues. “She has to learn that this is where she sleeps.”
“What if we just let her on the bed,” his husband says.
“We agreed this is the safest arrangement.”
“Yeah, but she can sleep all fucking day, and I can’t,” his partner gripes.
Cat pauses for a blessed thirty seconds, and then makes a sound like she’s dying.
“I really can’t take it,” his husband says. “I feel like we’re torturing her.”
“We are not torturing her,” Ethan says, putting his pillow down. “If we let her out now, she learns that all she has to do to come out of the crate is cry. We are trying to discourage vocalizing to get what she wants.”
“Ooooooaaaaaaarw,” Cat interjects, and Ethan puts the pillow back over his head.
“She’ll go to sleep eventually,” Ethan says optimistically over the racket. “She fell asleep at about three thirty last night.”
“Great.” Ethan’s pillow is snatched. He opens his eyes to behold his exhausted partner, bags under his eyes, hair in disarray. It isn’t just fatigue, Ethan knows, though that’s part of it. Ethan has learned, over the last couple days, that Cat was with them to begin with because his husband had heard crying just like this—plaintive, exhausted, afraid—and followed his ears to a racing dog owner who emphatically did not deserve the beautiful animals he was mistreating. “What are we going to do about it now?”
Ethan sighs. In the crate, Cat’s crying starts to lower—a lull, not a secession of hostilities. They’d made that mistake more than once. Ethan takes the opportunity to reach up, run a finger over the bags like he could wipe them away. “We are not hurting her,” Ethan says. “She is a baby, sweetheart. Babies cry. We have to be firm about this—bedtime is crate time until she’s house trained.”
“I know,” his husband says, shoulders slumping. Ethan sighs, and leans up to press their lips together, once, and again, drawing it out. He feels his partner relax into it—into him—after a moment, curling towards Ethan and firming up the pressure, sighing as Ethan parts his lips—
“Arowowowowowooooooooooo,” Cat says, hitting a decibel that genuinely makes Ethan jump. His teeth collide with his husband’s mouth painfully, and his partner pulls back with a hiss.
“God damn it,” his husband snaps, reaching up to wipe at his now slit lip.
“Shit—shit, I’m sorry,” Ethan says, starting to sit up. He’s waved back down, his partner following to bury his face in Ethan’s neck with a groan.
“I give up,” he announces to Ethan’s collar bone. Ethan reaches up to pet his hand through is hair.
“She’ll fall asleep eventually,” he says again.
“I don’t care anymore.”
“Arrrrrrowowowow,” Cat adds, plaintively.
Ethan sighs, and puts the pillow back over his face. It was going to be a long night.

3. Forehead kiss
He’s on the couch with a book, pretty thoroughly absorbed in the adventures of Percy Blakeney, his wife Marguerite, and the infamous League of the Scarlet Pimpernel, when the familiar click-clack of greyhound paws stops before him and a head is placed very politely into his lap.
He looks down at Cat, staring up at him with wide, soulful eyes. “Hm,” he says. “I am pretty sure this counts as begging, Kitty-Cat.”
Cat does not respond to this, which is typical. She also doesn’t move, though, so he’s left either way with something of a decision to make. “I don’t know, Noodle,” he tells her. “Last time we tried this was a bit of a disaster.” He puts his book down to silk her ears with his fingers, then has to make a low “ah!” noise when she takes this as permission to try to climb up. “Manners, Miss Kitty.”
Cat settles down on her haunches, head still very stubbornly resting over his thighs.
He sighs. “You may just be too big for this,” he tells her, going back to petting her head. “I told you to stop growing, but you didn’t listen to me, and now look where we are.”
Cat, being a dog, does not respond to this, either. Instead, she yawns, big and wide, and continues to stare at him very, very sadly.
He sighs again, reaching up to rub a hand over his face. “We’ll try,” he says, and then pats his thighs. “Up!”
He barely has time to brace before a 65 lb greyhound sits up all at once, places her front paws on his knees, and leaps her whole gangly self up and onto his lap. She impacts his chest with her full weight in the next moment.
“Oof!” He flails and catches Cat as she tries to twist around, standing directly on his stomach painfully in the process. “Cat—hold on, kitty, let me help—”
Cat pays him no mind, very clumsily twisting so that her ass stays on his thighs and her paws continue to dig painfully into his flesh, doing her absolute best to stay off the couch proper like the very good girl she is. He catches her before she topples over, picking up her forelegs and trying to lay them flat on his legs as she twists around, trying to get comfortable. There’s a moment where they both realize that she is going to have to lay her head on the armrest, and she freezes just where she is, staring soulfully up at him with the world’s most heartbreaking expression, before she twists around again, shoving her whole body weight into his bladder, so that she can very carefully lay her head down on her own paws, dangling just slightly over the edge of his knees.
He starts to laugh somewhere in there, kind of helplessly, which is how Ethan finds him: sitting on the couch like a moron, considering his life and choices, and trying to cuddle a full-sized standard greyhound, who is doing her absolute best to stay within the confines of his lap.
“Don’t say anything,” he wheezes, trying to shift Cat just a little bit more so that she’s not digging a back paw directly into his kidney. “I know, I know, I did this entirely to myself.”
“I mean, you did,” Ethan says, and when he looks up his husband is clearly trying not to laugh, green eyes bright and devastatingly fond. “And you continue to be doing it to yourself. You realize you are going to have to pick no-dogs-on-the-couch or Cat’s-allowed-on-the-couch eventually, right?”
“I realize no such thing,” he says, sniffing as his dog gives a great big doggy sigh and settles more firmly against his lap and chest. “She’s just fine, see?” He’s mostly holding her on, and he’s not going to be able to read like this, but the point stands.
“I see,” Ethan acknowledges, and walks over to drop a warm, affectionate kiss on Cat’s head, and then on his forehead.
And then, because Ethan’s actually the best husband in the world, and he got incredibly lucky, he sits down next to the pile of man and dog and picks up the book. “Where were you?”
“Top of the page on the right,” he says, and settles in himself, listening to Ethan’s lovely voice read aloud until the end of the page, and then the next, and then the next.
Somewhere around the middle of the next chapter, Cat realizes that there is a second lap at her disposal, and stretches out between them. He takes the opportunity to drop his own head onto Ethan’s shoulder. Ethan doesn’t even pause, wrapping an arm around him and flipping the page with his thumb, as Marguerite begins to realize that perhaps not all is right with her understanding of her husband after all.
Can’t relate, he thinks, very comfortable on the couch with his whole little family, and lets himself drift off to sleep.

Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: The Saint (1997), Mission: Impossible (Movies) Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Ethan Hunt/Simon Templar (The Saint) Characters: Ethan Hunt, Simon Templar, Luther Stickell, Benji Dunn Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Canon-Typical Violence, Crossover, First Time, Come Eating, (I swear this is T I swear), discussion of identity Summary:
Ethan doesn’t see his thief again for nearly a year. And then, somehow, he seems him all the time.
(Or: Five times Simon Templar introduces himself, and one time Ethan Hunt begins the introduction for him)
...Hm. Well that escalated quickly.
This is part two of my SaintSpy series, but I think for the most part this stands alone? All you have to know from that one is Ethan and Simon met and joined forces, and left on good terms with a certain understanding of each other and a willingness to see each other again.
A huge, huge thank you to @lightsabersandpens for the beta, and to @oathkeeperoxas, again, for dragging me into this ridiculously niche crossover ship to begin with.
Enjoy, all!
