From Detective Comics #990... I enjoy that Harvey is trying to get more abstract with the “two” references in the addresses for his hideouts.

You hadn’t had a lazy morning in years, and you had all but forgotten how good it felt.
A single sun ray warmed the bed, making the temperature under the thin sheet just ideal. The slow, steady rise and fall of Jason’s chest under your head was soothing, as well as the random pattern his hand was drawing on your back. Usually, you’d have already trained and eaten by that time. Today, you had no intention of leaving the bed anytime soon. The last night had been spent fucking so many times in so many different ways, you were both exhausted and happier than before. Jason was even wilder than you remembered (or he got even better?), so much you were still riding the absolute high you had reached.
You traced his scars with your fingers; some old ones he had told you about, some you had put there yourself, and some others your had yet to know how he got them. You had a lot to catch up about.
“The last time we found ourselves like this,” You began, trailing your soft touch up and down the browned mark on his shoulder. It was as large as your sword, and a witness of the rocky beginning of your relationship. “I begged you to come back to the League with me”
He angled his head toward you. You could feel his eyes on you, half closed and relaxed as he’s even been. “But I begged you to follow me back here first”
It had been a heartbreaking moment. The build up of the unanswered question for a whole year had lead to there. None of you had wanted to talk about the time his training would be done, you had rather wanted to keep doing your stuff and ignore the impending separation. That morning hadn’t been unlike this one, with the sun coming through the hut and with you both on the hammock, naked and intertwined under the fur cover. He had broken the silence, asking you to forget the League and stay with him. Back then, you were so sure you could only reach Luthor through it. So you asked Jason to instead join the League at your side.
He had dressed up and left the hut, and you hadn’t heard from him from then until you crossed paths in Ukraine.
“I guess this is the fight you won” You smiled, flicking up your gaze to his. “Seeing as I’m here”
“The fight I won?” He raised his eyebrows. “Implying I didn’t win any other fight?”
“You did, but…” You teased, gently tapping your fingers up his collarbone. “Let’s face it, I still won most of them”
He gasped. “Excuse me?”
You smirked.
Before you could see him move, he rolled on top of you and caged you underneath him between his arms. His eyes were narrowed in indignation as he channeled his mean face on. It once might have worried you, but it had lost most of its purpose now. Especially since you were both naked.
“I’ve won plenty of fights against you” He sneered.
“Mhmm” You hummed, knowing all too well how he didn’t like to be challenged. You hadn’t poked at his pride in too long, so you couldn’t pass the occasion. “Sure you did”
“Have you forgotten what happens when the fighting range gets too small?”
You simply blinked.
“Or when I truly got angry? Or…”
You cocked your head to the side as he halted his words. Then, understanding flashed through his expression.
“You’re still riling me on purpose” He sighed.
“What did I like to say again?” You asked rhetorically, pausing for emphasis. “Ah, yes. When you’ll stop falling for it”
“I hate you”
“Don’t blame me for being such an easy target” You rolled your eyes. “Now come here”
“Bossy” He finally grinned. “I love it”
He lowered himself so his lips touched yours and kissed you softly. However, the moment didn’t last long, as his cell phone vibrated on the nightstand. You could feel the shift toward annoyance in his mood, and it only grew when the phone vibrated one more time, and another one after that. With a long sigh, he rolled off of you and to the side of his bed. He frowned, then all trace of displeasure at the interruption wiped off of his face.
“What is it?” You asked, peeking over his shoulder. He shut off the screen immediately.
“You’ll see” He chuckled. “Get dressed”
“Ooookay” You nodded slowly, watching him throw his legs on the side of the bed and reach for his shirt on the floor. You put on your clothes from the day before and went for the guest bedroom you had, changing into something clean. When you got out, Jason was waiting for you leaning on the doorframe.
“First though, breakfast”
You followed Jason, as you were still unfamiliar with the place. Sure, you had mapped the way from your room to the cave, and from the cave to every close escape around. But for the rest, you had barely the time or desire to explore. All this space was pointless to you, as you couldn’t figure out who would need all of this. However, it did provide a good way to avoid any Wayne during your stay, you’d give the manor this point.
But it didn’t allow you to avoid Bruce this time.
He caught you around a corner, and you three remained in a stare off for a few seconds. You knew it probably wouldn’t result in a fight, but your hand still hovered above the blade hidden at the back of your waistband.
“I think you have overstayed your welcome here”
Jason gritted his teeth, but you remained calm. You had expected this.
“I will be gone by tonight” You replied on a neutral tone, then pulled Jason with you to side step him.
“One more thing”
You halted your steps in the doorframe to the next room, turning your head to look at him. He hadn’t moved.
“I don’t want to see you in my city again”
“You must be fucking kidding me” Jason yelled, but you held up your arm to stop him from marching back to Bruce.
“Absolutely not” He turned to face you. “Ever since she’s came, she has conveniently disclosed very precise information on the weapon’s whereabouts, except when it mattered. And hid her family ties to Luthor”
“You think she’s working with him?” He scoffed.
“I don’t know, is she?”
Jason glanced at you, about to reply something, but you just shook your head at him. It was pointless to try and convince Bruce Wayne, especially since you knew your word could never overturn your suspicious behaviour. He rolled his eyes and walked away, and you were about to follow him before you paused.
“I’m not” You spoke up, and you could feel Bruce’s eyes on your back. “If you must know, I’ve come here to kill him, and I don’t need your permission for that”
With that, you walked away, not waiting for an answer from Bruce. You joined Jason in the kitchen, who was already working on cooking oatmeal. His jaw was still clenched, and his posture tense.
“I can’t believe the fucking audacity” He grumbled.
“He is entitled to his opinion of me” You shrugged and leaned on the counter next to him. “I don’t really care what he thinks about my intentions”
“Still” He sighed. “Are you still planning on finishing your mission?”
You crossed your arms against your torso and furrowed your eyebrows. You could just leave Batman and the others take care of it, and leave them to deal with Luthor. But again, you hadn’t came all this way to just give up.
“Bruce was very clear on his stance about me remaining involved in this shitshow” You hummed, before glancing up at Jason. “But we do have a bio weapon to stop, and I’m far from done with Luthor”
His disappointment morphed into a grin at your words. “Attagirl, that’s what I like to hear”
“I most certainly don’t like to leave things unfinished” The corner of your lips lifted. “You okay with going against Batman’s orders?”
“Oh my dear” He chuckled as he poured the oatmeal in two bowls. He glanced at you with an excited glint in his eyes. “Nobody has a better record of disobeying him than I do”
“Good”
He put a spoon in each bowl and handed you one. “Now we need to have a game plan for what’s next”
“Any idea?”
“I sure have” His grin widened. “I want to show you something”
He motioned you to follow him as he ate his oatmeal mid walk. He got down to the cave and led you to a small side room, where he grabbed the tablet on the table. You slowly ate your breakfast as you watched him press buttons and mumble to himself. Then, he turned to you.
“You ready?”
You nodded, unsure of what he was talking about. He dramatically pressed one more button, making the wall in front of you turn on itself with a woosh. Your eyes widened as you took in the content of the compartment.
“So?”
You blinked at glanced at Jason. Your grin slowly stretched to match his.
“Oh yeah” You nodded again, this time, with way more assurance. “This will definitely do”
----
Jason heard Bruce coming from miles away.
Even if he technically didn’t, his course of action was so predictable that the Bat’s dramatic landing on the rooftop behind him was no surprise at all.
“I thought I had made myself clear”
Jason stood up from his crouched position and turned to face him, arms crossed against his chest. “You did”
“Then what are you doing here?” He sighed in annoyance.
“Well obviously you’re blaming your wrong intel and failures on someone who has nothing to do with it, which is a classic you” He taunted. “So we’re here to finish the job. Her and I really do work well together, thanks for noticing”
“Red Hood” He warned.
“Batman” He mimicked.
Someone landing next to them grabbed their attention.
“Red Robin” Tim announced himself under Bruce’s hard glance and Jason’s amused one.
“What are you doing here?”
“Well, I knew something was up when I didn’t see Foxy in the cage all day” He explained. “So I followed you here. By the way, where is she?”
As if on cue, a shadow dropped behind them. The movement did no go unnoticed, and as if on instinct, Tim spun around and threw a shuriken. His expression quickly changed as he realized who was in front of him.
There you were, still crouched from your landing and holding his shuriken mid air inches away from your face. You were smirking under your mask as Tim stared at you in disbelief.
“Twice” You spoke as you stood up fully. His eyes quickly scanned you from head to toes, almost overseeing you handing him back his shuriken. “Twice you have thrown one of these at me”
“Where’s the League suit?” He asked, slowly taking back his small weapon. “And you’re stupid bow?”
You shrugged, sharing a knowing glance with Jason. “I thought it was time for a change”
Then, understanding washed across his face. “Oh, oh my. You’ve dropped the League”
He did another once over. You had ditched the heavy coat for a lightweight suit made of silk and leather, with armored plastic on the stomach, the upper arms and the back. The arm bracers had smaller spikes than the previous ones, and you no longer wore a heavy mask. Instead, you had only kept your half mask and wore a hooded robe crossing on your torso. Your grappling hook was now in your utility belt, and your arrows were replaced with sharper, more volatile darts kept in a sheath on your thigh. You now had 25 regular darts, five explosive and your two classic sedatives. Only your sword remained on your back, so it would “unclog your aesthetic”, as Jason had put it.
You did like it better like that, the bow wasn’t your style anyway.
The new gear was still all black, for the exception of a silver kitsune draw into the back of the armor that would show if you took off the robe. It was comfortable and flexible, and resistant to bullets and stabbing. Jason had hit the target right on with the design.
“Do you keep your wrist shooter?” He asked, squinting his eyes.
You raised your arm and shot over his shoulder to prove your point. He caught the small arrow mid air, nodding impressively.
“Still the best part of the suit” He muttered to himself.
“I thought you said you’d be gone” Bruce cut in. Your eyes went to him.
“I still have a couple of hours” You replied without missing a beat.
“Talking about” Jason said. “Your time window just opened”
“You can either help us or stay out of the way” You told Bruce as you adjusted you comm. “But this is happening regardless”
He didn’t speak right away, taking a moment to ponder your words. Then, he voiced his thoughts. “Are you going to kill him?”
You held eye contact for a few seconds more before taking off. You ran along the ledge and jumped on the next building, then letting yourself slide down the fire escape. You chose not no reply to him, as you didn’t need to give him another reason to come after you. Granted, not replying was practically the equivalent of giving a positive answer, but at least it could give you the benefit of the doubt for what it was worth.
Using the shadows of the city, you quickly made your way through the blocks by the back alleys until you reached the imposing tower in the middle of the Diamond district, the same building you and Tim had sacked for show barely a week before. Whatever damage you had done, it didn’t show anymore. It was like nothing had happened.
This time, you came in by the front door. The second you walked through the glass doors, all activity stopped. You took a few step forward, and four guards met you halfway in the lobby. Without a word, they escorted you past the front desk and through the metal detector going off like crazy. Anytime you could have easily gotten rid of them, but you held back for now. You waited a short time for the elevator, then got in and up to Luthor’s floor. He was waiting for you by the window, and turned around with a smirk once you got in his office. You pulled back your hood and unclasped your mask.
“I see you’ve got a new look” He pointed out. “Changed your mind about the league?”
“Something like that”
“Well, I’m most certainly pleased to see you’ve decide to do the right thing” He took a step forward. “This is where you belong”
Slowly, you reached for your sword and took it out. A shadow passed across his face, and nodded to something behind you. Or rather, someone. You dropped to a crouch to avoid the tazer being stuck in your back--once was enough--and thrusted your sword in the legs of the guys around you. You rolled forward and shot the four guards coming your way, before jumping on the desk and holding them in your aim. Luthor now had four new guards around, letting you know more would come if he needed. You reloaded your crossbow.
“I’m disappointed” He revealed with a sigh. “Those were good men”
“Let it be a reminder I can and will take them all out if they're in my way” You twirled your sword. “Step forward and none of them die with you tonight”
“How noble” He chuckled, not concerned at all. His hand rested in his pocket and his stance was relaxed. “Did your boyfriend with the red helmet tell you to do that?”
You shot an arrow to his knee, but he easily side stepped it like he had predicted that move. He raised an eyebrow.
“I see” He hummed. “But I had expected you would deny your destiny. So I decided to help you make a choice”
Four more men came in the room and ran at you. You vaulted over them and landed behind them, taking them by surprise. Before the could fully turn around, they were on the ground. You wiped your sword in the crook of your elbow and faced Luthor again. He was watching, unwavering, almost out of the door. He was stalling, that was clear, but you didn’t know for what yet. He smirked again, and you knew he’d finally reveal his thoughts.
“Now I know you won’t back down like last time” He taunted, and your jaw clenched. “So I guess you can come at me now, tear through my guards and get to me…”
You narrowed your eyes, knowing there was something more coming. He wouldn’t make it that easy for you to get to him.
“But like I said, I had expected trouble from you, like your mother before you” He sighed sarcastically. “So I prepared a backup plan. I decided to launch my weapon sooner and instead use it elsewhere, since you forced my hand. In twenty minutes, it will discharge quite literally the plague in the city aqueduct”
You tensed, your hand going to your ear to your comm and turning it on.
“Ah, I don’t think telling your friends will work” He tsked. “The only way to stop it is through my genetic code”
“Therefore mine” You concluded.
“Smart” He mocked. “Yes. So you can either kill me here and get it over with, or you can run around and save a bunch of people, and miss your shot. Again. But you don’t have the time to do both, I’m afraid”
You calculated his ultimatum, and he was right. If he kept the men coming, it would be enough to stall you too long for you to go from the diamond district to the aqueduct. He had planned this move carefully, knowing he’d get a win in either case.
“Don’t worry, the cure is ready to go, there won’t be much casualties” He brushed off. “You came here to kill me, didn’t you?”
You flexed your fingers on the hilt of your sword.
“Do it” He challenged. “That’s what you are. You were made to finish what you started, to stop at nothing to get what you want. This is how I made you, even if I disapprove what you’ve done with my gifts. So go ahead, kill me and prove me right”
He was almost in your face now, staring right at you. You straightened your back and levelled up with him, feeling something strange, yet not unwelcomed, swelling in your chest. You thought about Jason and what he said, about those civilians you saved from a certain death, and about the man in front of you. Seeing him from so close, you realized every ounce of anger you held toward Luthor was… Gone. You thought with him so close you would be tempted to fight him, but all you could feel was indifference. He didn’t matter to you anymore, he never should have. He represented your insecurities, and tried to drag you down with him to excuse his own failure in making you a copy of himself. You became aware he was a pointless chase, and you had better things to do than indulge in it.
“I’m the Dark Fox” You jutted your chin up, squaring up your shoulders. “Don’t fucking tell me what to do”
You turned around and jumped over the desk, grabbing an explosive arrow and throwing it in the window. You jumped through as it exploded, plunging down the building. You pulled out your grappling line and hooked it on your shooter, then aimed for the roof. It slowed your fall midway, and you used your glove to slow yourself down.
As your feet touched the ground, you saw Jason’s motorcycle pull in in front of the building. You put back your sword in its sheath and your mask on your face, then your hood up.
“Aqueduct, we’ve got fifteen minutes” You spoke as you climbed on the bike.
“Yep, I heard everything” He had a grin in his voice. Yet, he didn’t go yet.
“What?”
“I am so fucking proud of you”
You felt your neck heat up as you looked down, even if he couldn’t see you, in fact, you were glad he couldn’t. You never knew his praise would make you react that way, or that you would be so important for you to hear it.
“And for the record” He added. “It was very hot, too”
“Fucking hell, Jay, go!”
“Fine” He sighed and sped away from there.
“Okay so what is your thing with jumping out of windows?” Tim said through your comm. You had no idea he had stayed.
“It makes me feel less dead” You replied, and Jason audibly laughed.
“You madwoman”
“Since you’re here, I have a task for you” You said. “Could you pull out the files on the weapon and figure out how the failsafe works?”
“I’m already on it”
Then, a bullet barely grazed your shoulder. The sound followed closely after, but it was like in slow motion. You raised your arm to protect Jason's shoulder, letting the bullet hit your arm brace instead. Reacting quickly, you turned around facing backwards and shot an arrow through the gun aimed at you. You then noticed five motorcycles following you, probably tasked with taking you down.
“What’s going on? How many?”
“Keep driving” You ordered. “I’ll take care of this”
You shot another arrow, but it bounced on the body of the motorcycles, and from your position you couldn’t aim elsewhere. You emptied your arrows to get one good shot, and it was enough to take one down. But looking at your recharges, you only had ten darts left, and potentially more people to take down around the bomb. You looked down, then up again to the guns aimed at you.
“Fuck it”
You reached for one of Jason’s gun on his thigh and clicked the safety off. Then, you shot.
“Holy shit” Jason yelled, and you could only imagine his expression. “HOLY SHIT”
“Did… Did Foxy just use a gun?”
“I wish I could have seen that” He whined. “I am so turned on right now”
“Too much information Jaybird”
You clicked the safety back on and turned around again, then slipped the gun back in his holster.
“I thought you thought guns were disgraceful”
“I kind of still do” You smirked under your mask. “So don’t get used to it”
“You’ll at least do it once when I look, right?”
“Hmm, maybe” You hummed.
“Aww, aren’t you two the cutest”
“Shut up Tim” Jason warned.
“Alright then, I won’t tell you what I found on turning off the weapon”
“Speak, Tim” You contradicted Jason’s order.
“First you have to apologize for throwing me out of a window”
You thought for a moment before answering. “No”
“Then no intel”
You sighed.
“Let’s compromise then” You suggested. “I will not apologize because I am not sorry, but for the intel and not telling on me after you found out who I was, I will consider not pushing you out of a window again”
There was silence radio, then he spoke again. “Good enough for me. There should be a code pad, I decrypted it and the code is 0000. Yes I know, but then you’ll see a slit, and you gotta put your left hand in it. It’ll read pulse, heat, fingerprints, and more. Since you should share all of this with Luthor, it’ll stop. Or it’ll explode, that was unclear”
“Well that’s reassuring” Jason grumbled.
“Alright, we’re almost there” You rolled your eyes. “Thanks”
“See ya later”
You turned off your comm and reloaded your shooter minutes before Jason pulled in the aqueduct yard. He parked his bike and you both easily climbed the barbed wire fence, and even though the place looked deserted, you remained careful. Luthor wouldn’t have left his device without surveillance. You grabbed your sword and fell in step behind Jason, who had his guns up. Then, he halted his steps and held a hand for you to do the same. You had this feeling you were being watched, and you could only imagine he had it too.
“Get ready” Just as he said that, bullets began raining over you. “Go find the weapon, I’ll cover you!”
You held an arm up to protect your face and disappeared into the darkness. You kept running along the walls of the building, allowing you to get in undetected. You reached the main water room, where you could see from the upper platform about eight guards surrounding the very device you had been hunting. The countdown indicated 2:37, so you had no time to lose.
You jumped over the ramp and landed quietly on your feet behind the men. You approached the first one and swung your sword around to let it rest on his neck. You used him as a shield as the other guards noticed you, blocking their bullets. You raised your arm and shot your five darts at them. You pushed the dead man off of you and faced the two remaining guards, taking a fighting stance and swirling your sword at them. Before they could start shooting again, you lunged and knocked their guns out of their hands. They kept fighting around you, trying to get to you with punches and kicks. But they were sloppy and predictable, and even after one fetched a small blade from his belt, they were no match for you. You glanced at the countdown, and it almost reached the one minute mark. Your eyes then trailed on the two guards around you, still trying to get the upper hand. They both extended their arms at the same time for a hit, so you dropped to a crouch.
Like you did during training with Bruce and Damian, you sweeped your sword in a quick motion. Unlike them, however, your current opponent weren’t quick nor skilled. The blade of your katana sliced their knees, making them collapse on the ground. You quickly reloaded your last round of arrows and sheathed your sword, then made your way to the device. You easily found the locked pad and entered the code, then pulled off your glove and stuck your hand in the slit. You pressed the button and watched as the biometrical scan began.
You heard noise behind you as backup reached the room, and without taking your hand out, you turned your body and aimed. The first five men fell, but there were still five coming your way, so you reached for your shurikens in your belt. But you didn’t get to take them out as other, all too familiar shaped shurikens reached the goons first. You sent a deadpan look at where you noticed none other than Red Robin standing there smugly.
“Oof, I hope you didn’t have dibs on them”
“I had it handled” You replied.
“I’m sure you did” He smirked as he walked past you and took a look at the countdown, then at the weapon. His expression turned grim. “Twenty seconds”
The scanner was still working.
“If it doesn’t work, you’ll have to slice the pipe off” You said, analysing the situation. Cutting the water and flooding the building would bring less casualties than letting the virus flow in the water system.
“What!?”
The system unlocked. You quickly entered the command to stop, and the countdown halted. You pulled your hand back and put on your glove again, then grabbed an explosive arrow. You planted the dart in the slit and backed up, pushing Tim with you. Soon enough, it went off and the weapon went up in smoke.
“Phew, that was close” He blinked. “Well played”
“Motherfucking Dark Fox!” Jason dropped from the platform at his turn. His helmet was off and he had a wide grin on his face. “That’s what I call making a difference! The League could never”
“That was really cool” He nodded in approval. “By the way, what happened to, you know..?”
“Did you do it?” Jason’s eyes were now on you, his grin not so intense now.
“He’s gone” You said, but it didn’t help ease the questions in their eyes. “As in, I don’t know where he is. I let him flee to come here instead”
Jason’s eyes widened. “And you’re fine with this?”
You shrugged. “It doesn’t matter to me anymore. His time will come, like everyone else. I just won’t be involved when it does”
“That was unexpected” He whistled. “But hey, what goes for you goes for me. Love the new mentality”
“Killing him was what the League would have wanted”
“That’s nice. Good choice” Tim nodded. “So you’ll stay here then?”
“Well, not here, since bats and foxes apparently don’t get along” You snorted as you unclasped your mask and pulled back your hood. “But I’ll be around”
“About that, how does Blüdhaven sounds?” Jason chimed in again, sliding a hand around your shoulder. You raised your eyebrows at him “I’ve got a pretty nice place there, and it’s technically not Gotham”
“That won’t be necessary” A deep voice came from behind you. You glanced over your shoulder where the massive shadow of Batman stood. “I’ve seen you work tonight. You acted good, I can allow you to stay in Gotham as the Dark Fox”
Jason coughed in surprise as you blinked, then turned around.
“Thank you” You began, nodding respectfully. Jason’s wide glance was now directed to you. “But no thanks. Besides, I still don’t need your blessing to stay, or to be me”
Bruce stared at you blankly, not moving or commenting. Your guess was that he wasn’t expecting this answer, or at least not delivered this way.
“Oh, B” Jason mocked as he put back his helmet. “Nice try. Anyway, we should get out of here before the cops show up”
You put back up your mask and hood and followed Jason out, waving at Tim on your way out. You left the aqueduct and waited until you were further into the city before ditching the bike and finding a rooftop to station yourself on, just in case you were being followed. The masks and helmets came off once again, and you took a moment to breathe the air from up there. It was a clear night, with a good wind chasing the clouds away. Jason observed the city lights with you, crouched on the ledge. Then, you heard quiet shuffling behind you. You spun around, then held Jason back when he was about to lunge. You kept your eyes on the outline of the figure in the shadows, knowing all too well who it belonged to. You took a few steps forward.
“You look different” Talia smiled. “A good different. I’m glad you finally found yourself”
“Thank you” You lowered your head. “For allowing me”
“I only want the best for you” She stepped closer to you, her smile never wavering. “Has he taken good care of you?”
You both glanced at Jason for a moment, and you chuckled. “He has. He was gentler than I’ve been to him”
“I figured he would” She winked. “You two were meant to be”
Your smile dropped as you looked down. Surely, she would know what it meant. Her sympathetic eyes fell on you and her hand rested on your shoulder. You had chosen to part with the League, therefore, with her. It would be the hardest part for you.
“You don’t have to explain” She reassured. “I knew this would come to this, and I am here to free you”
Your eyes shot up.
“I talked with my father” She explained. “Seeing your unwavering service for all these years, he has agreed to relieve you from your duties to the League. All he asks in exchange is for you to remain out of the League’s affairs, and he gave his word he will not come against you or your family”
“Really?” Your voice was barely above a whisper.
Her smile was encouraging as she nodded at you. Slowly, you took off the black robe, exposing the silver fox on your back. Then you took out your sword from the sheath in your hands, kneeled and offered it to her. She took it and held it upright in front of you, just like the day you had been initiated in the League.
“In the name of Ra’s al Ghul, I release Thaelib fi alzalam from her servitude to the League of Assassins” She spoke. “Your debt has been paid and your bounds are no more. Rise”
You got back on your feet, your breathing hitching in your throat. You reached for your sword in her extended arm, looked down at it and putting it away again.
“Thank you”
“You’re very welcome” Her hand went to your cheek. “If you need anything, don’t hesitate to reach out to me. I will be there for you”
“And I for you” You gave her a genuine smile. She offered her arm, and you took it at the elbow like she did. Your foreheads touched for a few seconds before you pulled away with a step back.
“It was nice to see you again, Jason”
“You too, Talia” He nodded with a small curve on the corner of his lips.
“Take care, children” She said before disappearing in the darkness again.
Jason approached you and took your hand, gently pulling your around to face him. He had this glint in his eyes, it was full of relief and happiness like you had never seen on him. To be honest, you were feeling the same way. It was like a burden had been lifted off of your shoulders, and you had never felt lighter. Sure, it brought you uncertainty to navigate without the League’s guiding hand, one you had relied on for most of your life, but it felt right. You knew Jason would help you like you had helped him, and things would start to look up from now.
“So, what now?”
“I don’t know” You chuckled. “It’s the first time I don’t need to follow any agenda. I’m kind of lost”
“Ah, this calls for the return of Teacher Todd” He grinned. “Lesson number two, you get to learn what fun and freedom taste like”

The grass was high as your mid thigh and small bugs swarmed up with every step forward you took. You didn’t mind though, you prefered it ten folds to the smog of Gotham.
For Jason, however, it was a different story.
He was sweating and grunting, and even if he was behind you, you knew he was getting annoyed by the flies and mosquitoes around. He was swatting his hand wildly and you could tell he was slightly regretting sharing his suggestion to you. The sun was high, and even for the end of the summer it was surprisingly hot.
“Ugghhh”
You rolled your eyes, but didn’t stop.
“Are we there soon?” He asked. “Jeez I had forgotten how far was that thing”
“Come on, stop lying to yourself” You teased as you spotted a familiar path up a small hill. “You like this”
He scoffed. “It reminds me of my ass being kicked”
“As I said” You smirked over your shoulder, and he raised his eyebrows at you.
You climbed up the small hill and came face to face with a small, half decaying structure with the roof caved in by the elements. Moss and grass was growing on the outside of the round walls, but the feeling of home you had subconsciously associated with it was very much intact. Jason stopped behind you, his annoyance completely gone and replaced by fondness over the sight in front of him. There were so many memories tied to the small hut, some bad but mostly good, and it was like you could feel them all at once. You dropped your bag on the ground and took a deep breath.
“So, was the trek up here worth it?”
“Fuck yes” He sighed in amazement, his eyes never leaving the hut. “I missed this place so much”
“Even if we had to work hard for survival?”
“Being here alone with you far outweighed any inconvenience this place brings” He stepped closer to you, his arm wrapping around your waist. Who would have ever thought? His nose nuzzled on your neck and your relaxed in his arms. “We’ll still have to do a bit of renovation around though”
“I hope you’ll help me this time” You looked up at him innocently. Last time you had built the hut alone before Talia had brought Jason, and even if he had been there, you would have absolutely not trusted him to help you with anything
“But you’re so hot when you work” He pouted. “I wanna watch and enjoy the view”
“And how would you make up all that work to me?” You asked, then you felt him smile on your skin. A smile full of mischief and promises.
“Oh, I have plenty of ideas”
“Oh me too” You grinned, stepping out of his arms, then you winked at him and disappeared in the hut. Only one hammock was still up, the other had fallen on the ground due to broken ropes. Stones of the small fireplaces were kicked in and weeds were growing around. The kitchen supplies were scattered around the makeshift shelf, but otherwise the place seemed to have been left untouched by human activity. Jason followed suit and took in the damages.
“Do you think we can still both get onto this hammock without the ropes breaking?” He asked, side glancing at you. You rubbed your chin in wonder, then hummed.
“There is only one way to know for sure” You tilted your head to the side. You nodded at each other and he walked around you, with you in tow. He carefully lowered himself first, then opened his arms for you. You joined him, and waited for a few second to test the resistance of the ropes. You heard them creaking and straining, but you were still hanging. You relaxed, and barely a second after, the ropes snapped.
In a blink, you were on the ground, and both of your weights made the wood give in. You ended up in the dirt, directly on the forest floor. yOu remained in silence for a moment blinking at each other.
“Well” You sighed. “The hammock could not support us both”
“Alright, there is a lot to do” He conceded. “How about you fix this baby, and I’ll gather the wood for the fire, hunt dinner and get the herbs for tea?”
“That’s more like it” You said as you stood up and dusted off your pants. You offered a hand to Jason and you pulled him up with you. “Do you remember where are the bows and arrows?”
“In the bark of the oak facing the boulder, yeah”
“Good” You chuckled. “I wasn’t sure you’d get it right”
“Come on” He groaned playfully. “I was quite a good student”
“Oh not at all” You laughed, taking a step in his personal space and looking up at him. “The worst, actually. You’re lucky you learned fast, or we’d still be there”
“Then I should have dragged my training on purpose” His lips hovered above yours. “You’d still be my incredibly unforgiving yet very hot teacher, and I your wild, stubborn and irresistible student”
“Hmm, does another sword in your shoulder sound good?”
“Only if I get to face you hand to hand”
“You’ve got yourself a deal” You whispered, before backing away abruptly. He blinked in confusion. “But it’ll have to wait. It’s almost sundown and we need to be installed by then. So get your sweet ass out there and stop distracting me here”
He sighed. “Why do I like it so much when you order me around?”
“I have no idea” You tapped his chest. “But the quicker we prepare everything, the sooner we can go to the lake for a swim under the stars”
He perked up at that, and with wide, excited eyes, he shot out of the hut faster than you could register. You chuckled and leaned on the threshold, lazily crossing your arms against your chest and taking a deep breath. You stared outside for a moment, enjoying the breeze and the sound of nature surrounding you. It was peaceful and beautiful, taking it in fully.
Then, you got to work.

I didn't say King invented the idea of Darkseid as Lovecraftian monster, just that he is writing him that way and that is a massive plus. And with the exception fo Orion-and I still don‘t see his interviews meaning the fake Orion in the book is honestly how he sees him, there is a difference between „privileged bully“ and straight up evil tyrant-he absolutely understands the characters, even if he does his own take and adds to them. It's not like he's obligated to follow old canon besides Kirby.
His interviews made it clear that it wasn’t the fake Orion he meant but just Orion in general when he showed the origin of Mister Miracle strip. Also even if the Orion we are seeing is fake he has Scott get upset when characters, even Orion himself, refer to Orion and Scott as being brothers (which is honestly the thing I hate the most since both characters saw each other as brothers in a way since being victims to the exchange pact bonded them for life).
And if King was “obligated” to follow Kirby’s stuff, well he is not doing a good job since Orion isn’t even a “privileged bully” in Kirby’s comic either. Yes Orion takes joy in violence and can be cruel while facing an opponent in a fight and it’s not the most noble thing but he reserves that for those who are also violent and cruel. Even then there are times he has caught himself and shown mercy towards those he hates because he wants to follow Highfather’s peaceful teaching and wants to better himself.
The only other major story, other than King’s MM, where he is portrayed as a bully is Starlin’s Cosmic Odyssey which people for some stupid reason seem to like taking from despite the fact that story not only shat on Orion but also John Stewart (then Starlin who went to write a very awful Death of New Gods story which wasn’t that good). I could rant about that but it’s for another day.
I don’t think King really understands a lot of these characters, not just Orion. I think with Scott and Barda where the characters he cared for the most and it showed (which makes sense since they’re the central characters). He added some good moments and emotional stuff between those two, and he had good ideas. But as a whole his Mister Miracle comic was a mess that ended up being a big wet fart with really no message and no point other than a downer story about Scott choosing to stay in a fake virtual world (which was obvious to me that it was that and not the Anti-Life Equation when the baby turned into the lump and the whole video effect, there’s a Kirby story with that stuff) and not doing the one thing he’s known for which is escaping. The fact that he chose to stay with a fake Barda rather than go back to the real one is also upsetting. Yeah I get Scott wasn’t the most interesting character in Kirby’s Fourth World (even when reading Kirby’s MM Barda was the most interesting and it made a heck of a lot of sense when I found out that Kirby initially wanted to make a comic about her and the Female Furies but ended up making Mister Miracle) but he had an interesting and tragic story that other writers  expanded on and used to give him flaws and conflict. Even Simonson in his Orion centered comic did something interesting with Scott in the short time he wrote him in that comic. I think King had a sound idea with exploring Scott having depression (even though it’s not something his character is known for) but the execution was pretty poor and in some moments the character feels very devoid of empathy which is something Scott is known for (and partially why he suffered more than anyone in Apokolips). I also see a pattern with his latest comics where he has characters that he’s interested in writing about ignore or block out the suffering of others while concentrating on their own and a few select others. He did it with Booster Gold in his Batman story (in which Booster acted pretty OOC) where Booster ignores the horrors of people dying and treats everything like a game that he can fix later and only becomes seriously affected when Bruce kills himself. Scott and Barda do the same in Mister Miracle with everyone but each other and a few characters King considers important (their kid and maybe Oberon). The scene where they go to have a treaty with Kalibak and both Barda and Scott do not react at seeing their dead friends' heads on spikes nor do they react at seeing their friends being used as table holders by the Apokoliptians. Heck both Scott and Barda lean on and slam said table which shows that they don’t give a fuck about their torture (not even touching the peeing on the pit thing which is really insulting), then there’s also that “Shut the #@*& up Lightray” running joke because no one cares about his suffering because he was being an OOC jerk and it’s funny when he’s abused I guess... Scott watching Bug get murdered in front of him and he doesn’t react to it and just keeps drinking his drink and acts like it’s nothing. But it’s OK he’s depressed I guess?? Real or not, depressed or not it just makes me think of his Scott as a jerk.
Also Barda and Scott having drinks with the bones of dead New Gods (cannibalism is now acceptable I guess) because they drank that when they were in Apokolips and it’s passed off as nostalgic. Honestly Scott and Barda view the horror of Apokolips in a nostalgic lense and I really dislike that. I guess that you make the most of it in a horrible place but they had each other and Scott had Himon’s safe haven but Scott and Barda always hated Apokolips and the good memories where with each other, moments that gave them hope, and some of the few decent people they met.
Scott seeing Granny having once seen Granny as a mother figure COULD be an interesting concept but at the same time it’s poorly done by King since he shows it as loving at times and even Scott thinking she had a romance with Izaya for some reason (I guess to signifying that Scott sees them as his parents?). Also that kind of relationship would be disgusting and perverted especially if you see how Granny manipulates the orphanage kids and Aero-troopers who see her as a mother figure and how infantile and submissive they act around her. Scott also never saw Granny that way, he saw her as an abuser and knew she used the motherly act to try and control him. The person you could argue Scott saw as a guiding figure (even if it was brief) while he was on Apokolips, and was his most healthiest relationship in there outside of Barda, was Himon whom Scott didn’t like in the beginning.
Tumblr media
It was Himon who encouraged Scott to think independently from Darkseid when he was already having doubts about him (despite Scott thinking he was crazy for thinking that way) and who offered a haven for the misfits in Apokolips who didn’t submit to Darkseid’s rule. He alongside Metron facilitated Scott’s escape from Apokolips. When Darkseid tells Scott he will still find death outside his rule, Himon says otherwise.
Tumblr media
I don’t even recall if Himon was in King’s Mister Miracle mini... And I honestly don’t care to check.
A big thing with Scott in Kirby’s MM is that he was the one person in Apokolips that both Granny and Darkseid couldn’t corrupt or contain. Despite everything he suffered Scott had a hope and optimism that outweighed Darkseid’s cruelty and he always escaped Granny’s grasp. Darkseid planned to let him escape Apokolips but Scott also escaped Darkseid and that more than anything bruised Darkseid’s ego. It was by managing to have a better life than what he had in Apokolips and being able to be happy and not be Darkseid’s tool what bothered Darkseid the most. After all Kirby’s Mister Miracle does end with Darkseid planning to stop Scott’s wedding with Barda just by showing up and causing a commotion in hopes he can make Scott miserable. Turns out, as he tells Oberon and Shilo Norman, that he didn’t stop the wedding but he was able to spoil the moment “Life at best is bittersweet” he ultimately proclaims.
It’s honestly a bit boring to think Scott was completely unaffected but he wasn’t unaffected by it even in Kirby’s comic and like I said writers did work with that concept and expanded on it. Simonson in Orion, Neil Gaiman in the Sandman issue that had Scott meet Morpheus, and J.M. Dematteis’ Mister Miracle (and I am sure some of the stuff I haven’t touched on yet) showed Scott was heavily affected in his time in Apokolips. He had nightmares about it, resentment towards Highfather, he even did things he felt guilt for while being there. But Scott never felt comfortable or at home in that place.
Going back to Orion. How exactly privileged can you be when they took you from your home which might be a awful but you were happy there with a mother that cared for you until you’re violently separated from her and taken to a place everyone there calls Heaven but you are told to hide your face, your history, and suppress your feelings and not tell everyone who you are or else they will hate you. Orion could never tell the other New Genesians he was an Apokoliptian or else they would shun him or maybe even go as far as try to kill him (they already suspect something is off with him). Orion was never comfortable in New Genesis even if he met his best friend there and Highfather made him want to be a better person. All that privilege doesn’t mean squat if you could never live comfortably with it while truly being yourself.
Tumblr media
This is before Orion even knew he was Darkseid’s son, yet he still cannot reconcile himself being of New Genesis.
New Genesis also loves beauty and equates beauty with good and in a sense Orion in his true form will never be good in their eyes. As a matter in fact beautiful/good and ugly/bed is a theme that Kirby pushes around in his comics. All the pretty people are good and all the evil people are ugly. It’s not without its commentary since his stories don’t say that people are evil because they are ugly but that they are ugly because they are evil people. A commentary of how fascisms and oppressive dictatorships breed “ugly” people. Still not something I’m fond of since it’s still attaching a concept of good and evil to a person’s physiognomy. Either way it’s Orion who manages to be in that grey area in a black and white world and that’s what IMO made him the most interesting and compelling character in Kirby’s New Gods. Orion wants to be good, strives to be good, and manages to do good. But at the end of the day he’s still “flawed".
Tumblr media
Being flawed isn’t good enough for both New Genesis, or Apokolips for that matter since you are only perfect when you’re submitted to Darkseid’s will.  Simonson even showed some of that in his Orion comic. New Genesians scoffed at Orion’s efforts to try and enlighten Apokolips and later begin to resent him when an Apokoliptian firepit appears in New Genesis (not Orion’s doing, it was Mantis’, but they really don’t care) and that’s enough to make them proclaim “Orion’s worse than Darkseid ever was!” “He was never one of us!”. Then Apokolips doesn’t accept Orion because they think him too soft, he doesn’t accept their cruelty and corruption, he disturbs those who have whatever power Darkseid had managed to give to them, and he is not as ruthless and fearful as Darkseid. He’s never good enough for any of those worlds.
Scott got the shitty end of the deal with being sent to Apokolips, a bad hellish life, no argument there. But Scott is beautiful, he has a good nature because he’s from New Genesis, he’s the son of God and the Messiah while Orion is the son of the Devil and the Anti-Christ (Not just King, but Simonson, Englehart and other writers have made those comparisons when talking about Orion and Scott). At the end of the day if Scott decided to go back to New Genesis, take his place as Izaya’s true heir and have a life of privilege he would have it and he would be welcomed with open arms. But Scott and Barda had the option to chose not to go to New Genesis and they preferred the idyllic perfect surburban high-middle class white picket fence dream life on Earth (which they love and if you read some of the JLI comics and MM vol.2 they get angry every time it’s interrupted for superhero purposes, they enjoy being domestic and doing normal mundane things because they never have that in Apokolips).
Going back to Simonson’s Orion even when Orion tried using something evil like the Anti-life equation for something good, even when he tries to free Apokolips from Darkseid’s tyranny, he ends up failing hard. It’s Scott who has to do something to set things right and in the end we know it’s only Scott who can contain the Anti-Life equation and carry the burden of it and utilize it better than anyone. Simonson mentioned that Scott has an iron clad will and that he’s the only person who cannot be corrupted by it (and I don’t even think he’s corrupted by it in King’s MM even when Orion accused him of it).
Even when Starlin had Scott use the Anti-Life Equation in Death of the New Gods he had him be exceptionally efficient at it and made sure to include a scene with Orion wondering how Scott got all sparkly and god-like when Orion himself didn’t. The obvious implication being that Scott is just better than Orion (and seeing Starlin’s feelings about Orion it's not surprising he would think that).
Because lets face it in most of the New Gods stories, even in King’s own story, Scott is allowed to be the hero and win even if the victory is phyrric and he chooses not to escape a fake world. Orion could never be the great hero, not even in most of his own stories. In King’s MM story he’s an antagonist that eventually gets killed by Darkseid and only manages some type of victory when he’s made into a weapon for Scott to kill Darkseid and get around the “Orion will kill Darkseid” prophecy. But the worst thing is that Orion’s own pain is ignored and not valid in that story. Orion hitting Scott and doing the whole “stand up” routine to try and lift him from his funk is shown as being bad because it’s Orion and he’s never “experienced pain” (King’s own words) and Barda calls him out on it. But when Barda does it it’s shown as being something good and Scott respects her for it because her pain is valid (but IMO that whole hitting Scott thing it’s just abusive behavior all around and shouldn’t be represented as good, period). Also we get possibly fake Orion acting like a tyrant (possibly corrupted by the Anti-Life equation, it’s never explained) and then when the story flashes his true face it’s to show that he’s Darkseid’s son. Again King really carries the theme of ugly=evil from Kirby but also ignores the ambiguity depth in the character of Orion.
There’s a quote from Paarthurnax a Dragon from a the game called Skyrim “What is better: to be born good or to overcome your evil nature through great effort?” And Orion is always doing the latter and sometimes he messes up. In Walt Simonson’s Orion he tries to help Apokolips, when he gets affected by the Anti-Life Equationhe tries to use it for good, but he accidentally becomes corrupted by it and makes people subservient to him even when it’s being done in the name of peace. In a way he accidentally becomes a bigger threat than Darkseid ever was and while trying to do good. When he’s taken down by Scott (dressed as the Black Racer) and realizes what he’s done he become depressed, agonizes, and wants to die. It’s only by helping a god named Clockwerx to destroy a Parasite that he finds the will to continue.
That whole ordeal was emotional, made me care about Orion’s tragedy, showed him being empathic and felt like a New Gods story. I also got some good moments between Scott and Orion and we get to see a tragic part of Scott’s life in Apokolips and both him and Orion bonding towards the end.
That said I still don’t trust King being in charge of a New Gods movie, don’t know much about Ava to form an opinion about her writing. But eh it sounds like they’re draft writing more than anything and other people can still revise it and change it. Still I won’t worry much until I hear that they’re already filming the movie.

Batman: Usurper Cast of Characters (WIP)
After a long period of deliberation, I’ve finally come up with the list of characters I want to use in my fanfic. It took a while because I needed to figure out which characters were around at the time of Knightfall, and if they weren’t around, would it be feasible that they’d show up during the events of my fanfic? I’ve separated them into Heroes, Villains, and Anti-heroes.
Heroes Tim Drake/Cal Corcoran/Redbird -- The story centers around Tim as Jean Paul Valley continues to disgrace the name of Batman. Bruce once described Tim as the world’s greatest strategist, and my intent is to show him beginning to develop that strategist’s mind. In many of the comics throughout his career, Tim also displays a lack of confidence, believing he has to prove himself to Bruce. Above all else, this is a story about Tim confronting his failures and beginning to realize what he can learn from them.
Tumblr media
Bruce Wayne -- I really want to show Bruce struggling to adjust to a life where he can no longer be Batman due to his broken back. The original Knightfall trilogy did this to some extent, but not enough for us to get a feel for how difficult that might be for him, particularly when the people he cares about are still in the fight.
Tumblr media
Dick Grayson/Nightwing -- some of my favorite Tim Drake comics are those that have him teaming up with Nightwing. They have a beautiful brotherly relationship that Chuck Dixon repeatedly made better and better. Dick trusted Tim to be Robin long before Bruce did, which is a compliment I imagine Tim didn’t soon forget. Dick also went through a bit of an identity crisis during the events of Knightfall where he began to question whether or not he was mentally fit to be Nightwing or to lead the Teen Titans. Like Tim, I think there’s a lot of opportunity for Dick to confront his demons.
Tumblr media
Helena Bertinelli/Huntress -- Tim Drake had developed a partnership with Huntress during the events of the first few Robin comics, helping him take down King Snake and other villains. While Batman didn’t trust her due to her connection to one of Gotham’s crime families, Tim saw her as someone whose knowledge of organized crime would prove invaluable time and again.
Tumblr media
Stephanie Brown/Spoiler -- The relationship between Tim Drake and Stephanie Brown is one I’ve come to love, despite Bruce’s initial disapproval of Stephanie. As Tim and Stephanie grew older, their witty banter back and forth as they took down Gotham’s thugs became one of the things I loved best about Robin comics. And like Tim, Stephanie felt the need to prove herself as a crime fighter. Though I enjoyed her time as both Robin and Batgirl, I always loved Stephanie best as Spoiler. Particularly in some of the newer comics, she’s realized she doesn’t need Batman’s approval to fight crime, and I think it’s important that her hero persona reflect that independence.
Tumblr media
James Gordon, Harvey Bullock, and Renee Montoya -- For my fanfic, Mayor Krol has stripped Gordon of his job as police commissioner. Justice in Gotham is handled solely by Jean Paul Valley/Batman, which is to say there is no true justice in Gotham anymore. Bullock and Montoya are unwilling to serve under such excessive force, so they turn in their badges to follow Gordon in a vain attempt to restore order to the city.
Tumblr media
Alfred Pennyworth -- Alfred doesn’t make much of an appearance in my fanfic. While I don’t think his absence his permanent, he’s become more than a little frustrated with Bruce’s decisions during the events of Knightfall and has decided a break is in order. As much as he cares for Bruce, Dick, and Tim, however, I can’t imagine he’ll be completely out of the picture. I’ve also always liked the Earth One version of Alfred a bit more than the typical depictions of him. Earth One depicts him as not only Bruce’s caretaker, but one of his mentors as well--a man who has seen war and can just as easily kill a man as save his life.
Tumblr media
Barbara Gordon/Oracle -- Babs is another one of my favorites. I especially wanted to have her in this story because I’ve always felt like Bruce and Barbara were never very close in the comics. I think Barbara would be an obvious person for Bruce to turn to as he adjusts to his life without the cowl. She’d be someone who could teach him how to continue the war on crime without being an active participant.
Tumblr media
Dinah Drake/Black Canary -- Dinah has a small cameo in the story, since I wanted her, Oracle, and Huntress to be in the initial stages of forming the Birds of Prey.
Tumblr media
Cassandra Cain/Batgirl -- Although Cassandra wasn’t around during the events of Knightfall, my fanfic takes place a few years after Jean Paul Valley takes up the cowl, so it’s feasible that she would have appeared by then. Each of the Batgirls has a special place in my heart, but Cassandra always struck me as intriguing because she was raised by an assassin, yet of all the Batgirls she seems to have the biggest heart.
Tumblr media
Clark Kent/Superman -- I had to do some research on this because the Knightfall and Death/Return of Superman comics take place around the same time. I wasn’t sure if Superman would have returned by the time my story takes place, but multiple sources claim that there was a comic in which Superman checked in with Jean Paul after his return. Jean Paul, however, had lined his cowl with lead so Superman couldn’t see who was wearing the Batsuit. This obviously raised some suspicions for Clark, but apparently not enough for him to investigate further. “Usurper” would have Superman taking a more active role in deposing Jean Paul. I’ve also mentally replaced Superman’s black-and-white, mullet-wearing Return costume with the blue, red, and black costume of Kingdom Come.
Tumblr media
Villains
Jean Paul Valley/Azrael/Batman -- The idea of Batman as a villain excites me to no end, and while Jean Paul isn’t the true Batman (however much he might wish it were so), he represents what Bruce might become if he ever breaks his rule not to kill. It’s also going to be interesting to explore Batman from the perspective of those he hunts--how terrifying that would be, especially knowing that this Batman kills. Jean Paul strikes me as somewhat of a tragic villain--he’s a man who believes he’s doing good, but ultimately is no better than the criminals he kills. He fears that without the brainwashing of the Order of St. Dumas, he’ll be nothing, which sadly is what he ultimately becomes.
Tumblr media
The Order of St. Dumas -- The Order is responsible for Jean Paul’s brainwashing into becoming Azrael, and their influence on him is always present as he continues to have hallucinations of his father and St. Dumas throughout the Knightfall trilogy. The purpose of this brainwashing, however, is never quite explained. Presumably, the Order wanted Azrael to become an avenging angel of Gotham--one who would deal with its criminal element in a permanent fashion as opposed to Batman’s temporary one. “Usurper” takes it a step further, with the Order revealing themselves to be a fascist organization bent on placing Gotham under their martial law.
Tumblr media
Victor Zsasz -- From the time I first read the Knightfall trilogy, I always loved how creepily realistic Zsasz seemed compared to a lot of Batman’s other villains. The concept of a man who carves tallies of the number of people he’s killed into his skin fits into the grittiness of Gotham perfectly. Even the fact that his eyes in Knightfall were merely dark slits from which two white specs stared hungrily drew me towards wanting to write a Batman story with Zsasz in it.
Tumblr media
Joker -- Like Alfred, I don’t think Joker will show up very much. If anything, I feel like Joker is better in small doses, rather than in long story arcs. Part of what makes his character so good is the mystery behind him, and the longer he’s around, the less mystery there is and the less creepy and unpredictable he becomes. That being said, I’m interested in showing a darker Joker here than what appears in the Knightfall comics. In Batman and Son, Grant Morrison suggests that Joker goes through periods in which his personality changes, making him even more unpredictable, and currently I’m thinking we’ll get to see Joker go from a campier character to the grittier villain we see in comics by Brian Azzarello and Scott Snyder.
Tumblr media
The Court of Owls -- This secret society appeared in the first two volumes of Scott Snyder’s run of Batman comics in 2011, yet Snyder suggests that the Court has existed in Gotham since its creation. Again, I don’t intend for the Court to show up much (or, perhaps, at all), but Tim and the rest of the Bat-family will start to hear hints and rumors of their existence.
Tumblr media
Anti-heroes Bane -- Bane has little more than a cameo appearance in my story. Rather than turning Bane over to police custody, Jean Paul gives him an almost lethal dose of the super-steroid called Venom. He’s rushed to the hospital where he remains in a comatose state. His gang, however, remains active in both Gotham and Santa Prisca. Tim contacts them to learn more about how Bane managed to defeat Batman and take over Gotham.
Tumblr media
Edward Nigma/Riddler -- For a brief period, some of the Batman comics featured Riddler as a detective who solved Gotham’s most puzzling crimes. The idea intrigued me, so I’ve revitalized it for “Usurper.”
Tumblr media
Harvey Dent/Two-Face -- This rendition of Harvey is greatly inspired by Scott Snyder’s All Star Batman 1: My Own Worst Enemy, in which Batman is forced to work with Harvey while his Two-Face persona works against them. For “Usurper,” I imagined Harvey’s deep desire to save Gotham from corruption, which might lead him towards working with Tim and the rest of the Bat-family. Two-Face, however, still holds a deep hatred for everything Bat related, and would simultaneously seek to foil Tim’s plans.
Tumblr media
Selina Kyle/Catwoman -- Selina had a fairly large role in Knightfall, partly due to the fact that she was one of the few people who immediately knew that Bruce was no longer wearing the mantle of the Bat. Jean Paul also had a disgustingly crude lust for Catwoman that Selina was able to exploit in order to escape his grasp. As much as Selina cares for Bruce, I can only imagine she’d want to aid in removing Jean Paul from the role of Batman.
Tumblr media
Shiva -- Shiva was one of Tim’s biggest mentors while he was learning to be Robin, but was frequently disappointed by his refusal to kill. Although their relationship started as one of mutual respect, Tim’s regard for her soured after she convinced King Snake to hold a personal vendetta against him. Shiva is also one of the martial artists Bruce turned to while he learned how to be Batman again.
Tumblr media
Pamela Isley/Poison Ivy -- While Poison Ivy was still very much a villain during the events of Knightfall, ultimately her character has always had Gotham’s best interests in mind (even in those interests meant the genocide of humanity). She’s gradually become less of an eco-terrorist and more of an anti-hero, working with Harley Quinn and Catwoman as the Sirens. “Usurper” introduces her to the idea that, while she’s not wrong in wanting Gotham to be a more eco-friendly city, her methods are unjust.
Tumblr media
Victor Fries/Mr. Freeze -- Freeze is by far one of my favorite anti-heroes. He’s a man who will do anything if it means saving his wife, Nora. “Usurper” has him teaming with Tim after the Cataclysm leaves him desperate to fix the machines which keep his wife in cryostasis.
Tumblr media
Jonathan Crane/Scarecrow -- This is probably one of the characters I’m most excited to work with. “Usurper” has Crane rethinking his ways after a recent pummeling by Bruce/Batman. He begins to see that his obsession with fear was born out of his own personal demons, which he hopes to overcome in order to become the true Master of Fear. During this process of rediscovering himself, Tim approaches Crane under the alias Cal Corcoran with the idea of employing his toxins as a new weapon in the Bat-arsenal. While working together, Tim introduces Crane to the concept of using fear for a good purpose rather than for one’s own pleasure. While Crane’s psychosis isn’t entirely cured, his life is given new purpose as he begins a life preying on Gotham’s criminals.

Ra’s al Ghul and the League of Assassins -- Ever since I read Red Robin 2: Collision by Chris Yost, I’ve loved the idea of Tim Drake and Ra’s al Ghul teaming up/fighting against each other. Both are incredible strategists who utilize all of their assets in order to win the fight. “Usurper” has Ra’s realizing Bruce is no longer Batman and making a move on Gotham while he believes it to be weakened. When he discovers that Tim is attempting to depose Jean Paul, however, he proposes an alliance that he hopes will lead towards Gotham’s destruction. Talia al Ghul and Damian Wayne also make appearances.

Counter Monkey John Arminio reviews ‘Mister Miracle’ #5
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now that Entertainment Weekly has declared Mister Miracle “Best Series” in it’s 2017 comic book roundup, it seems Jack Kirby’s vaunted Fourth World has gone... mainstream? So why do I need to add my voice to the avalanche of acclaim to Tom King and Mitch Gerads’s revolutionary take on the DC universe’s greatest escape artist? Heck, why do I need to offer yet more praise to the body of work of both Tom King and Mitch Gerads, whose comics I have already gushed with prolix prose and conversation about how much I adore them? Because Mister Miracle deserves it, that’s why. It’s a book that is creating an entirely new vision of a character while paying homage to his legendary creator. It celebrates in nostalgia while making it clear that such an outlook could have a deleterious effect on our psyches if we continue to gaze backwards. It comments on the metatextual nature of Mr. Miracle and of incorporating the intellectual property of an artist and creator whose own intellectual property was frequently co-opted while he was alive, yet is, at its core, a story about love, family, and how we combat despair. The is real deal comics.

What immediately separates King and Gerads’s Mister Miracle from anything Kirby did is how restricted the movements of the characters are and how they are so confined by the panels we find them in. There is no room for the hyper-exaggerated poses or trademark Kirby Krackle that made Jack Kirby’s work so distinctive and dynamic. Much of the current series in structured in a ridged panel grid system, trapping the characters in an unvarnished, harsh reality with no escape (even for an escape artist). When the grid system is abandoned for a looser page setup, the images are still frequently dominated by close-ups and faces, the depressed or angry expressions of the characters telling much of the story thanks to Gerads’s incomparable facial renderings. We as readers are as trapped with the inescapable rage and angst as these characters, contained in their emotional myopia. It’s a harrowing experience, one made all the more desperate when it’s Mister Miracle, Scott Free himself, who is the trapped individual we are reading about. The greatest escape artist is trapped in this 12-issue story arc, riding to its inevitable conclusion.
Issue #5 opens with Scott Free, in full Mister Miracle garb, standing in front of a Grauman’s Chinese Theater-esque movie house, putting his own hands in the handprints, immortalized in concrete in front of the theater, of Jack Kirby himself. Later, resting on a hill with his wife Big Barda, Scott will pontificate on the nature of existence, God, and the “I Think Therefore I Am” philosophy of Rene Descartes. We have Scott putting his hands in those of his own creator, then, while reflecting with the woman he loves more than anything in the Universe, if he even exists; if anything exists. It’s an incredibly poignant moment, made all the more powerful by the fact that Kirby created the Fourth World and the New Gods as a means to ask those questions of himself.
This collision of meta-commentary and genuine, heartfelt emotion is something I would never have expected in... any narrative. Sure, we have Deadpool breaking the fourth wall and Christopher Nolan has used some of his non-Batman films (The Prestige and Inception in particular), to comment on the process of filmmaking itself, but those examples are usually an end unto themselves and tend to lack any emotional connection to the audience. I am hard-pressed to think of such synchronicity in which a story is using the medium of its own specific storytelling to comment on the medium and the story itself, WHILE being a compelling and heartbreaking narrative all at the same time. It brings to mind Shakespeare’s “All The World’s A Stage” monologues or Dante writing The Divine Comedy about ascending to Paradise all the while banished from his native home and an enemy of his church. Fitting, that the family dynamics of Mister Miracle are downright Shakespearean and the war of the New Gods is comparable to that between Heaven and Hell.
Tumblr media
And even with all of that lofty presentation and historicity, both in the real world and in the Fourth World, Issue #5 resonates most powerfully as a love story between a husband and wife, a couple who love and depend on one another as fully when they are playing carnival games as when they are combating the innumerable parademon legions of Apokolips. Mister Miracle and Big Barda (can I call them “Bardacle?”) are a fascinating and unique couple, especially in comics, where stable, fulfilling marriages are rare. Jack Kirby purportedly modeled their marriage after his relationship with his own wife, and it manifests with a spirit of equanimity and trust. Free and Barda fully depend upon one another when they need to, have faith in each other’s emotions and motivations, and those aspects are mined by King and Gerads and made even richer and more fulfilled in this story. This Mister Miracle series is not an all-ages book and, since the physical relationship between any married couple is an essential part of a healthy relationship, it represents the sex life of Bardacle in an honest, funny, heartwarming, and even tasteful way. The height disparity between Scott and Barda is evident but never played for laughs. Instead, it is a charming aspect of their relationship; part of what makes their marriage unique. Issue #5 allows us to explore how perfect these two New Gods are for each other and how intimate and human their marriage really is.
Of course, this being a book by Tom King and Mitch Gerads, these moments of bliss are few and far between, tragically constructed to make us feel the full, desperate force of the despair to follow. In Issue #4, Scott Free was sentenced to death by his own step brother, Orion, for daring to question his leadership abilities in the New Gods’ war against Apokolips. Thus, Issue #5 functions as a sort of “Last Night On Earth” for our illustrious couple, at least before Scott is dragged away by the denizens of New Genesis to see his sentence carried out. When this finally occurs, every scene previous becomes more powerful and poignant in retrospect; the debates about existence, the stubbornness in the face of pointless carnival games, the last time the couple would make love; it all coalesces in a beautiful statement on how these two people love each other and why. Why, amid all the fighting and pain they have experienced in their lives, they are still willing to endure anything for each other, to go to war for each other. Now, that war has come home and woe to anyone who seeks to tear them apart.

Release Date: March 25, 2016 Running Time: 3 hours 2 minutes (regular cut is 2 hours 31 minutes)
“It’s been nearly two years since Superman’s colossal battle with Zod devastated the city of Metropolis. The loss of life and collateral damage left many feeling angry and helpless, including crime-fighting billionaire Bruce Wayne. Convinced that Superman is now a threat to humanity, Batman embarks on a personal vendetta to end his reign on Earth, while the conniving Lex Luthor launches his own crusade against the Man of Steel.”
Because of the anticipated release of Justice League on Friday November 17, I’ve decided to write reviews of all of the movies that make up the DC Extended Universe so far. There have been a lot of talks about how long this franchise will last, but as a comic book fan, and huge lover of movies, I never want movies to be bad. I’m hoping that it’ll be amazing. You can find the dates for when the reviews for the other DCEU movie will be released at the link here. I wrote the review for Wonder Woman around the time it came out, and it can be found here.

Cast & Crew
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was directed by Zack Snyder, who I’ve already summarized his previous work and work since in the Man of Steel Review.
It was written by Chris Terrio and David S. Goyer. I’ve already mentioned Goyer’s work as well in the Man of Steel Review, as such I will go over Terrio’s work. Chris Terrio previously wrote the 2012 film ‘Argo’, and has since worked on the Justice League movie, the sequel to that movie will be released in the future, and Star Wars: Episode IX set to be released in 2019.

Cast includes Jesse Eisenberg, Amy Adams, Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Laurence Fishburne, Diane Lane, Callan Mulvey, Scoot McNairy, Holly Hunter, Gal Gadot, Jeremy Irons, Kevin Costner, Ray Fisher, Jena Malone, Ezra Miller, Michael Shannon, Lauren Cohan, Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
Review
I will start by saying that I find the idea of Batman and Superman fighting for any reason to be kind of silly, but I was interested in the idea. If this movie would have been just Batman v Superman, and not ‘Dawn of Justice’, I think that this movie would have been a much better film, and wouldn’t have split the audience as much. There were too many rushed storylines in the overall film, and making everything a little convenient, and stupid. They made Lex Luthor a joke for over half the movie, and then made him somehow have little surveillance clips that featured Aquaman, the Flash, and Cyborg that he had managed to get, implying that he knows everyone’s identity.

He also neatly put the clips into nice little folders with each hero’s respective logo as the folder picture. That is one of the worst ways that they could have done that. It’s something that I can’t comprehend the reasoning behind it, other than ‘we need to introduce them, instead of following the ‘Marvel method’ and bring them in via separate films, let’s cram them all in one movie before the big team up’. It’s one of the dumbest moves that DC has done, and I still can’t understand how it got put into the movie.
The fact that he also knows who Wonder Woman, Batman and Superman really are is something that is both dumbfounding as well as overreaching. It’s something that I feel that ruined the movie for a lot of people, and they tried to fix that at the end, by making him crazy and in prison. I feel like because of all the things mentioned above, it was too for this one movie, and should have been explored in a grander arc of films. The short clips of the characters were interesting in what we saw, but wasn’t worth cramming them all in.

A weird decision that I don’t understand was that the filmmakers decided that they were going to give Bruce Wayne prophetic dreams? It’s something that’s very difficult to comprehend, and that they don’t really explore much in this film. He sees ??? that we will be seeing in Justice League, and sees the Flash in a surprise cameo that could have been a dream? I’m still not 100% sure, and I’ve watched this film roughly 8 or 9 times since it was released.
One thing that is confusing with the surprise cameo by the Flash from the future, was because of the other ‘dream sequences’ that Bruce has experienced in the movie to this point, is that I’m not entirely sure if that actually happened, as Bruce ‘wakes up’, after The Flash disappears back into the future.

The standout performance in this movie was Ben Affleck as a much older Bruce Wayne / Batman than we’ve had in the past. He was charming when he needed to be, while also being able to display the brutalness that the character had developed over 20 years of crime fighting in Gotham. There’s not much to say about his performance than it was extremely well done, and I will be disappointed if ever they recast him as some rumours are stating.
I really enjoyed Jeremy Irons’ take on Alfred in this film. He was funny, witty, harsh on Bruce, and still trying to teach him lessons. I also enjoyed that they made him part of Batman’s team, in helping him with the suits and the vehicles. It really showed the relationship between the two as the only meaningful one that Bruce has with anyone.

The other character who stole all of the scenes was one of the most controversial casting decisions that DC had at the time with Gal Gadot being cast as Diana Prince / Wonder Woman. That decision turned out to be genius as she did a very good job in this film with what she was given, while also following this performance with the movie that was widely praised by audiences and critics alike in her solo film.
The casting of Eisenberg in the role of Lex Luthor, was in my opinion one of the oddest casting decisions that they made. His portrayal of Lex was creepy (Jolly Rancher scene), and father obsessed. I understand the choice of making him a sort of ‘modern day business man’, however I feel like it didn’t work at all in this film, and I hope that they correct that in future films.

Henry Cavill did a better job at showing the many sides of Clark Kent and Superman in this movie than he did in his first shot at the character, and I must commend him in his improvement as an actor and at how he managed to make the two characters different than one another.
The Lois Lane character was better handled in this movie, and while she still played a big part in the movie, she wasn’t integral to the advancing the story. I think that Amy Adams did a better job, and had a better feel for the character in this movie.

Using General Zod to be the one that ‘becomes’ Doomsday was another very questionable decision that the people in charge made. I feel like they had very little inspiration from the thousands of comics detailing his origin and purpose, and decided to use a Kryptonian that they already had introduced.
There were way too many subplots in this movie that made this movie a mess in my opinion. There was the plotline that featured Bruce Wayne’s employee deciding that he didn’t want Wayne’s money after he had helped him, which lead to him being used by Luthor. There was the whole African village plot where there’s a woman that lied to the Senate to make Superman look bad. There’s the fun fact that I’ve mentioned where Luthor somehow knows everyone’s secret identity. There’s Diana Prince / Wonder Woman that knows that Luthor has a picture of her from 1918. There’s the Superman is a menace subplot. There’s the underlying subplot that Batman has already lost a lot of people in his life and has faced many of the villains from his comic books. There’s the death of the Waynes. There’s the weird and badly executed ‘reason to stop fighting each other / bonding moment’ between the titular heroes of the film. The Doomsday plotline that uses the body of General Zod and Luthor’s blood to create him, as well as the set up for Justice League. That was exhausting just typing that all out, and I’m sure I missed a few as well.

The music in this film followed the theme that Man of Steel had started, and featured a strong score, as well as introduced a few new themes for Batman and Wonder Woman. The music was a bit much at certain times, using the Wonder Woman theme several times over and over again, no matter how good it was. At the end of the day, Hans Zimmer once again did a good job with the music for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, with the help of Junkie XL.

The Batman in this movie, is very much a Batman that has been through some shit. He has become brutal after the events that transpired in Metropolis, and the fact that he was branding people, knowing that it would lead them to their death is something that was especially cruel. His fighting style against the people who took Martha was also extremely brutal, and it shows that this version of Batman has no problem with killing people. It’s something that was almost as controversial as Superman breaking General Zod’s neck with his bare hands.
The car chases in this movie was fun, and cool to watch from that viewpoint, but I feel like it paled in comparison to the Nolan films in what they did with the Bat vehicles. There was 2 cool parts with the vehicles and that’s when he flipped a car onto another car somehow, and having Alfred control the Bat Plane in a drone mode.

The final fight between Batman and Superman was surprisingly well done. I feel like if Superman would have opened with ‘Bruce, Lex has my mother’ rather than ‘there’s no time for this’, then the fight would have been avoided, however that’s just logical. The fight itself really showed Batman’s resourcefulness and intelligence that he had planned most of the fight, and had actually managed to beat Superman in the fight is something that hurts a lot of fanboys, because if Superman would have wanted (as he says), Bruce would have been neutralized right away.
The final fight between the Trio (Wonder Woman, Batman & Superman) and Doomsday was something that was fun, while also something that I’ve mentioned over and over again as something that should have been done in a separate film. The fight was fun to watch, and the arrival of Wonder Woman was great, especially the use of her new theme. I enjoyed watching Wonder Woman be happy that she was having a ‘real fight’, and could have some fun.

The Death of Superman, a popular comic book storyline was sadly butchered in this movie. This is something that should have had its own movie to display the whole story that they could have done with the characters. The death of Superman due to the Kryptonian spear and Doomsday was well executed in the visual aspect of the movie, but people didn’t get to really get to care for the character in the way that they might have wanted them to. Everyone knows that he will be coming back in Justice League, even if most of the promotional material doesn’t show him, it’s a given. It’s one of the things that I don’t even consider a spoiler, because it should be common knowledge by now. They can’t bring the Justice League together for the first time on the big screen without Superman.
The hinting of Bruce putting a team together in honour of Superman’s sacrifice is something that will be further explored in the Justice League movie that comes out this week, and I really want this movie to be good.
Lex Luthor gone crazy – Source: Warner Brothers Entertainment
Overall, the movie had a fantastic Bruce Wayne / Batman as well as Diana Prince / Wonder Woman, who both stole every scene that they were in, while the movie was a mess story wise and trying to do too much. As I mentioned above, this movie should have either been spread out into two films (not in a part 1 + part 2, but two separate movies), and I feel it would have been done much better, and both movies could have been developed a bit better where the stories wouldn’t have been too jumbled up. While I did enjoy the movie, I didn’t love it or hate it, this movie was sadly just an okay film with a lot of potential that was wasted. At the end of the day, I don’t think I can give this film a score higher than 6.75/10.
What did you think of Batman v Superman? Tomorrow I’ll be reviewing Suicide Squad. Are you excited for Justice League? Let me know in the comment section below!
