hi there! i’ve seen your pokemon villain tarot pieces and i think they’re really neat, and the colors especially are very striking - how do you choose the color palettes for them?

Thank you so much! I can go into each one since they all had their own inspirations so if you’re interested in knowing more about that then read on!

For starters, I set the limitation that each card has a base pallete of two hues to help with consistency. Lighting, shading, and effects could be different hues, but the base could only be two. I also decided that I wouldn’t use any pure white, black, or achromatic greys as they felt like loopholes in the two hue rule.

Sada and Turo already had a distinct orange and purple theme, so it made sense to lean into that. While trying to think of things to fill up empty space that matched the palette, I thought of how orange marigolds are used to decorate during Dia de los Muertos and that both Sada and Turo had a variant of volcarona, who has orange wings. With that in mind, I decided to decorate the wings in the shape of a flower as a way to tie it back to the death theme.

For Volo I decided to use the yellow already present in his design and red as a show of how intense his feelings were at that point, a powerful palette for a powerful trainer. The red also helped tie in giratina who I knew would be an important part of the composition. I wanted this palette to convey a feeling of intensity, way more than any other card.

Chairman Rose was tricky, compared to other villains he doesn’t have too strong a signature color. I decided to lean into his name (rose) and do pink with blue to be the screen he’s on in the stadium and Leon’s figure at the bottom. I went with such a non threatening palette to reflect how Rose was not seen as a threat by the player for large part of the game. He leaned into a friendly demeanor and so I felt the palette should reflect that.

For Giovanni at first I thought to use his signature colors of red and black. However, if I did that it wouldn’t be pure black, but rather a very dark shade of some other color, and I didn’t like how that was looking. I started thinking of things Giovanni reminded me of and one thing was wine, which tends to make me think of bright yellows and deep reds or pinks. I also knew I wanted his persian in the card and personally like the head canon that it’s shiny, so using those yellows and pinks worked really well!

Guzma, Lusamine, N, and Ghetsis each had relations to each other in game and I wanted their cards to reflect that. For N and Ghetsis, that would be by them sharing green and being surrounded by dragons. Ghetsis colors were mostly inspired by his coat and the colors of a shiny hydreigon. For Lusamine and Guzma it was by sharing purple and by having guzma hang by Lusamine’s arm. After that I leaned into the gold in Guzma’s design and a bright blue for an eerie, otherworldly effect of Lusamine.

Lysandre and Cyrus got similar palettes for opposite reasons. Lysandre’s signature color is orange while Cyrus’ is cyan. Blue and orange together make for good contrast with being complementary colors. I gave Lysandre dark blues to help make the oranges pop. Meanwhile Cyrus got bright orange to reference the red chain.

Finally, for Jessie, James, Meowth, Maxie, and Archie, I felt their signature colors were so well known that I had to use them. It wouldn’t make sense to use anything other than red and blue for Maxie and Archie. Maybe there’s some leeway with Jessie and James, but for them I figured if I didn’t use one of their colors, then I shouldn’t use either, and why would I do that when purple and pink work so well for them! And they came together nicely on Meowth.

there is another pokemon rival who gets worn down by the player constantly defeating them! Hop from gen 8 gets all sad and discouraged after losing over and over and it doesn’t help that his brother is the champion, so he has this whole arc where he ditches all his usual pokemon (including his childhood bff wooloo 😔) and tries using stronger ones. it doesn’t work and eventually he learns the power of friendship is more important than winning or something idk I never played the game. Kieran’s live joker arc is still way more compelling but I thought you’d like to know about this guy too

yeah!!! i know and love hop. i’ve only played the first 40 minutes of gen 8 myself (everything else i’ve learned through osmosis) but that was more than enough for me to feel bad for this guy tbh. constantly living in his brother’s shadow and all that. i don’t think there’s a single photo of him in his family home it’s like all covered in leon’s stuff like sheesh. what i’ve heard about hop is that he just gives up eventually and aims to be a professor even though apparently that came out of nowhere. that for sure qualifies as ‘getting worn down by the player’, and i was thinking about him while typing that, but like. getting worn down and giving up is just sad. it would be cool if it’s bc he realized he really did have a secondary dream that took precedence but otherwise it’s just the short end of the stick for him. i wish hop had been treated better by the story :(

way more compelling is kieran stubbornly refusing to let go of his dreams even if they seem out of reach and potentially destructive, then probably taking drastic measures towards them. and wow is that so in line with the overarching theme of sv- having a dream, chasing a dream, then having to reevaluate what it’s worth to you once it gets to a dangerous point. others have said this better than me. but the primary and most drastic example: blindly pursuing a reckless dream is what got sada/turo killed, isn’t it?

but liiiike. doubt anything that bad will happen for kieran unless he gets involved with the (/a) new legendary in the indigo disc that has crazy powers or something. i mean regardless they’re not gonna kill off a child character of course but i mean like i don’t know if i think kieran will get himself into any material danger on his quest to become stronger. but at the bare minimum he’s probably going to ruin some relationships. but then again wouldn’t it be so good if he actually did get manipulated by some insane higher power and did something drastic in exchange for strength. ok that’s besides the point but i would like to see it

the point is yeah chasing his dream might lead him off the deep end and i hope it does. i hope they don’t chicken out on this. especially given that his desire is, frankly, not very noble. my personal takeaway is that by the end it’s not even about ogerpon but it’s about revenge on the player. like he just has a vendetta now. that is suuuper interesting. idk if even your typical real official pokémon villain has ever had such a personal reason to hate the protagonist. ‘darn meddling kid!’ vs ‘you lured me in with the promise of friendship and then lied to me took everything from me and stomped on me’. like dude…

Turo / Sada were really the only pokemon villains(?) Besides ghetis to just straight up not f around with a battle and just straight up try to kill the protagonist. Because blatantly if you didn't have Miradon/ kiradon you'd be very dead, and the only reason you weren't is because it was the professor's pokemon. Let's also not look past the fact that you're fighting against a pokemon with a body count at this point. Additionally the intended scenario was that only Turo / Sada would have access to their pokemon.

I think it's really telling of them compared to the other villains, who are so overconfident in their ability to win they'll hedge their entire life aspirations on a pokemon battle (most of whom don't even have full teams.). I feel like it's great in representing who they are, just ghosts clutching the remains of a dangerous and harmful dream with not a care for anything else.

Personally that kinda drives me feral a bit. Like obviously they had reasons to become this way. Their SO leaving them, and maybe even the influence of a malicious legendary pokemon and not to mention countless betrayals. But it's such a raw portrayal of the humans we never get to meet. How desperate and almost sort of depraved they were for their goals.

Their paranoia is surely depicted really well and gives an idea of how out of their mind they ended up being by living in self isolation for so long, literally devoured by a foolish dream.

In one of my headcanons, they never really held full control over their actions, not even as students. To be more specific and less cryptic, I think they always had to deal with poor mental health, especially Turo (the one I like to fantasticate about).

It is not an essential detail, but it adds up to the angst I really like.

yknow , Clavell & Cyrano having a divorce arc is like 100 times better then that going on with turo & sada.

especially when there's the possibility that the bullys that dropped out because of operation star fled to Blueberry academy.

basically , Cyrano getting hit with knowledge of the exact specifics that went down during the teal mask storyline (Kieran's villain arc + the exchange student's depression about being an unwilling accomplice to starting it) , then said exchange student was basically bullied into battling her fellow students more times than she was comfortable doing, which leads her to calling in a "Team Star " to clear out the bully problem.

and imagine the shock on his face when Team Star Shows up to raid the place , there's 6 bosses instead of the 5 that the exchange student mentioned .

but the reveal doesn't click for him until a starmobile decked out in a water type theme cruises onto the scene.

and to Cyrano's shock & despair , the person aboard was Clavell!

The Professors Aren’t Evil

Okay there’s been a lot of theories lately that Professor Sada and Professor Turo are going to be the antagonists of the games

The theories all mention one or all of these facts

You have the 3 starters at the beginning of the game so they don’t give you your starters.

They aren’t named after Trees

Sada has fangs

Turo is dressed like an evil villain.

So yes all these things are true, but they don’t necessarily mean anything.

Here’s a few examples.

There have been Pokémon games where the Professor doesn’t give you your Pokémon.

Juniper in Black/White doesn’t give us our starters nor does Magnolia in Sword/Shield

Heck we don’t meet Magnolia till we’ve already caught our team.

Yes them not being named after trees is weird I’ll grant you that but Pokémon seems to be break versions molds with this game like the Zodiac tradition with the fire starters.

Perhaps coming up with names for trees got to tedious

And finally just cause a Professor looks evil doesn’t make them evil

I believe Sada is literally a cave woman who was frozen in time and recently became acclimated enough to our time to become a researcher especially since the whole world is so new to her

While Turo well I believe he wants to innovate the world into a new technological age for good or for ill

Weird fandom takes I really don’t get

*WARNING*: May contain sensitive topics and to let you know that these are my personal opinions on the topics.

“If Sonic we’re to die, Amy would commit su*c*de just to be with him”

First off, I’m pretty sure that would’ve been a pretty selfish move on Amy's part since she’s one of the most selfless character in the franchise. IF Sonic were to die, Amy would’ve live her life to the fullest because she knew that’s what Sonic would’ve wanted her and their friends to do. Plus she’s 12 pls stop vilifying it.

P.S. I’m never a fan of the take where if Character A were to die, Character B would kill/sacrifice themselves just to be with them since I find it to be selfish in a narrative sense but also throwing away any potential either character would have.

“Rhea is a tyrannical and controlling bitch”

Huh what? Like since when? I mean ok maybe she could’ve worded some things better but she is not controlling in any sense. She took in Shamir, an atheist and never once does she forced her ideology onto the aloof archer at all. She took in Cyril, an orphan and gave him a purpose there. Cyril's support with Seteth has the latter implying that if the former were to have his own motivations, she would happily supported him in his decisions.

And this may go a little off topic, but she genuinely worried about Flayn's disapperance in the academic phase, expressed grievance when Jeralt died, gave Byleth a task of helping the students feel at ease, organising events, so on and so forth. All in all, Rhea is just one of the most misrepresented character in the FE fandom.

“Leonie is plain unsympathetic because her Support with Byleth and Marianne said so”

Well this take appeared on TVTropes but… how is she unsympathetic when her A and B Support for Byleth and Marianne respectively has her apologizing to the latter two for her actions. Really, I think that certain factions of the fandom judge Leonie too harshly and while I understand that she might be everyone's favourite character, but twisting her whole entire character and taking everything out of context all because of one notorious Support is just plain wrong.

Don’t get me wrong. The way her B support with Byleth happened right after Jeralt died did make her a little unsympathetic but I’m gonna say it’s the timing of when the Support happen. Speaking of Supports, I’m pretty sure she has plenty of good ones there such as with Lorenz and Felix for example.

“Claude hates Rhea”

Well yes initially. He was distrustful of Rhea at first in VW along with calling her out once you defeat Edelgard but his Support with Cyril has him changing his viewpoint of Rhea and as such it happens within VW as well. Also, it fits in with Claude's nature as being a distrusting individual (what with his upbringing and whatnot) but overtime with character development has him trusting people but not without caution of course.

“Professor Turo is into N*T and is therefore a cryptobro”

Don’t know where people get the idea that he is into crypto stuff but there’s hardly any info on his and Professor Sada's personality just yet. Again, while I accept any fan interpretation since everyone is allowed to take creative liberties, I think it’s best to not judge a book by its cover, especially since the info on Scarlet and Violet is just recent and we may or may not have to wait for a few weeks/month to see what kind of purpose Professor Sada/Turo may serve.

The same goes for either version-exclusive Professor being a villainous team while the other is good since I don’t want to see another Disney Villian Twist Syndrome™️ again. (Also them being villains with no foreshadowing would make it like an asspull or in my own words, last minute change)

Ok so, Orthworm titan has been defeated! I think, just as a little check in. Im going to talk about my opinions on the different characters. Because i'm sure some of them will change down the line and i'd like to be able to come back to this and see what i thought of them!

Warning for about mid game ish?? spoilers? Maybe? Im just talking about characters personalities so warning for that

Nemona- She's pretty fun. I like her energy a lot! But she isn't a favorite or anything. I feel like i haven't seen enough of her personality.

Arven- I adore him. At first he annoyed me, and then i was suspicious of him because of how he talked during the first titan about a "he". But when it was revealed he was trying to help the goodest of boys i actually teared up. If i hadn't been in a room with someone else i probably would have started crying. I absolutely adore Arven's personality. His path is probably my favorite because it feels like it has the most fun story. And you get to interect with miraidon more.

Penny- I don't have a ton to say about her. Mildly suspicious of her just because i don't know much, but i'm trying to see her in a neutral light so it doesn't cloud my judgement. I like her design a lot. BUT WHY DOES SHE NOT HAVE TO WEAR THE UNIFORM?? I wanna come to school in whatever i want >:(

Brassius- I was expecting moody and gloomy, but he's actually pretty cool. I like how much he cares about art. He also got a bunch of bonus points for shocking me with that windmill jump. I like the joke of his ace pokemon and over all he's a fun character. His design is REALLy cool and it's fun to see something that isn't just your basic flowery bright green grass gym leader. (not that i have anything against that, i love all the grass gyms)

Kofu- I couldn't pinpoint why but i did NOT like him at first. I tried so hard to work past it because i couldn't figure out why i didn't like him. But after the market and his battle i came to like him a lot. He's not my favorite by any means but he's a fun character.

Iono- I was already a fan when she was introduced. I love her design and her personality is hilarious. She's my favorite gym leader as of right now. Maybe even my favorite character in the game.

Clavell- Kinda spooky, kinda fun. He seems a bit annoying at times but that might be my distaste for authority. I keep flip flopping on whether i like him or not. I don't dislike his personality so far but he feels like he's hiding smth. Idk. I always am suspicious of characters i don't know enough about lol. Especially cuz i'm not sure if gamefreak is pulling a twist villain again or not.

Jaqc- He's fun :) I like him a lot. Doesn't stand out a ton but he's a cool character

Turo- hmmm he hasn't really done anything that interesting so far... kinda dislike him just because he isn't Sada lol. I liked her design more than his. But i got violet for Miraidon. Again, im wary of characters i don't know enough about....

At this point im too lazy to keep looking up their names and i have a horrible memory (just took all the midterms and the one singular question i got wrong was the language teachers name). So uh... classes only no names.

Math teach- In the first 5 seconds of meeting her i wanted to dislike her so bad. I HATED math as a kid and i still hate math. The only class i did well in was geometry and that's because it felt more like fun puzzles to me. But basic math? I can't do it. No matter how well i know a formula or how much i try and focus i always mess up something small that then ruins everything else. Every step could be correct but ill have gotten confused about how much of something there was cuz i misread the problem and all of a sudden its all messed up. I can somehow get 11 from 5 + 3. I never learned long division. I hate math with a burning passion. So i was ready to suffer at even math in a basic kids game. But she was so sweet. And the problems WERENT HARD. I was so scared it was gonna be basic addition or subtraction or smth and i would suffer. But i realized it was all math i had already been doing in the game already. Calculating damage based on weakness, or figuring out how many of different items i could buy. I wish i had a math teach at some point who had worked with me to make it interesting. And she's so sweet. I literally adore her so much

Art teach- This guy has not made an impact on me at all. He is like a paper lunch bag of a character next to a bunch of cool lunchboxes with fancy patterns. Not bad, gets the job done. But so much less cool. I always loved art tho so i guess he gets extra points for that.

Language teach- he speaks french i rest my case. The only worse thing he could do is be british. Cuz at least the french did wonderful things for cooking. But fr if there wasn't spanish sprinkled in i would be missing every question. At first i kinda disliked him but im kinda nuetral now. (im kidding about the french n british thing for the record. i just jokingly hate british ppl and i dislike french as a language cuz i find it just as stupid if not more stupid than english)

Home ec teach- I Adore him. He's great. I love cooking so much so of course when i saw a home ec class i was in love. I loved the idea of my in game character also being good at cooking(why yes, i am easily amused). At first i was kinda intimidated by him but i liked him still. After te interaction with him in the cafeteria w the pbj i was enamored w his character. he is my little meow meow i think hes so entertaining. I love him

Fighting? Uh battle smth?? teach- hasnt rlly stood out to me in any way. however the interactions w her being bad at cooking were funny and felt like they gave her more character, which made me like her more. I think shes pretty cool but def is overshadowed by other ppl.

History- Cannot figure out why but she kinda annoys me. maybe its the clothes lmao. But idk im trying to work past it cuz i cant figure out if i have a good reason or not yet. So basically nuetral leaning towards negative on her.

Nurse miriam? is that her name- couldnt tell you why but i like her. she just seems fun to hang out with. i like her a lot :)))

As a final note, i really like the little interactions w the diff characters throughout the school and maybe im just a nerd but i actually like going to the classes..... Its fun and i like seeing the characters personalities. (plus answering even the easiest of questions correctly make the happy chemicals go brrrr) Ive always love extra lil stuff that lets you interact w characters in any game, its so much fun.
