literally to present the world with a better version of you which could mean facing your future and and forgetting past mistakes or finally settling on a brand new path while they both stare at ticket stubs from a film they saw together (literally they both kept the tickets...) and then they promptly throw away the ticket stubs as though they've just been burnt because they catch themselves doing something terrible - thinking about each other. (literally they both kept the tickets but then absolutely did not think about why they'd kept the tickets, because as if they've reached a point where they'll allow themselves to realise that maybe it's possible for them to enjoy each other's company yet. and then them throwing away the tickets is them being like nope refusing to think about why I kept this it never happened i definitely did not willingly engage in recreational activity with dan humphrey/blair waldorf and then i definitely definitely definitely did not keep the evidence it just didn't happen none of it happened i will not think about it ticket gone means no more thoughts on the matter okay case closed moving on time to go visit serena...)

DYNASTY ⮚ NCT
BEFORE YOU READ — WARNINGS
Hello, everyone!
I beg you to take some time to read these warnings before going on with the story since there are going to be some important and heavy themes during this journey.
First of all, English is NOT my first language, so there may be some mistakes and also I might mix British English and American English a lot. I try my best since I always hope to get better. If you see any mistake, let me know, politely of course.
WARNINGS:
Getting into the real warnings. Mental illnesses are a big part of this story, such as depression, anxiety, panic and anxiety attacks, and other symptoms. Not all characters sufferer from these but the main ones does and in general, all of them are not in a good state mentally. The most mentioned ones are panic and anxiety attacks (and other things that I made up just for this story that don't exist in real life but are similar, let's say.) There is going to be one explicit and pretty graphic self-harm scene (not described the act, but the aftermath) and in general self-destructive behaviours (taking an excessive quantity of meds, insomnia, some suicidal thoughts and similar). I'm going to put a specific warning on each chapter but still, they are going to be there for at least the first half of the story. If any of this trigger you, I advise stopping reading now. I also want to add that I documented myself using sites that seemed to be reliable sources, but some things might still not be very accurate. Once again, if you see that something is incorrect LET ME KNOW, misinform people is the last thing I wanna do, even if this is just fiction. At the same time, I remind you that I'm not a doctor so my knowledge is limited.
They are all dealing (no, they are not lmao) with past traumas, some of them are more affected, some others don't show it a lot, and others pretend everything is fine while is clearly not.
Some things that you'll find in the story are completely made up (es: memory waves) or taken from the NCTmentary videos. I also documented myself about the sleep stages, but once again, I don't really know if it's accurate. I studied something for an exam that was close to this field but my knowledge is not so big for most of these things to be accurate. Some things are made up for the sake of the story and everything that revolves around "the synchronization of dreams" and the "dream world", so please don't take things too at heart and expect everything to be realistic (or possible), some things are based on real brain function and then changed a little to make the plot possible, and since it's based in the future and they also have special abilities, I think we can let this slide. Also, some other functions of their brains are related to their powers.
I want to specify that sometimes the characters might say something against taking meds or against the things that they should do to try to get better but always keep in mind that it's just their point of you, what THEY say is FOR THEM. Just because the characters think that it DOESN'T mean that I stand by that, I just tried my best to enter their brain and empathize with their suffering and pain and how I built up their characterizations. If you are going through anything similar remember that you are loved and you can always ask for help.
There are also going to be minor violent scenes (fire, physical fights, training with guns, knives, and so on). Most of them are going to be flashbacks and not too explicit, still, I'll also put a warning for this. (excluded for the ones that are simply the training of the Fighters, you'll find out what I'm talking about if you decide to stay). The only explicit scene will be at the end of the story. These scenes might not be realistic but the only ones with amazing skills are the Fighters and there's a reason why. The others have average skills but they are not the ones that take part in this fighting.
As I said in the summary, the story takes place in an imaginary future (3020) so everything is different, use your imagination and think that science and technology made enormous step headed and it won't sound too absurd.
Occasionally is used strong language and profanities, curses, swearing.
There won't be explicit sexual scenes, just two implied. Just like anything else, I'll put a warning anyway.
Sungchan and Shotaro won't be part of this story, because I started it when Nct were still 21 and because I couldn't find a role for them, for now. Also, I don't really know them enough to feel inspired to write for them. Still, that doesn't mean I don't support them or don't consider them part of Nct or anything. Also, not all members are main characters, some are more present and some others are not, but keep in mind that at the end they are made up-characters and not the real NCT, so everything that happens or how often you read about them is related to the characters and not the actual idol. I DO NOT own them and I don't think they would act in the same way they act in this story, it's just fictional.
This should be all with the most serious stuff. There are going to be different couples ( M/F, M/M and F/F) but the focus of the story is not romance. They are just a big family (not blood related before some of you start to scream "INC3ST") and I hope that you'll love them, and their dynamics, as much as I do. I put so much effort and love into this project and I'm so excited to be finally making it see the light. I hope some of you decided to stay.
Also, since it might be hard to visualize everything and to help you with the plot I made a Pinterest board ( @junmoonlight) where you can get to know better the places where the story takes place and the characters. There will be four original females characters. The original characters don't have a fixed face claim so you'll find different people in the boards just to give "the vibe" I think they have. You will also find pictures of them in the next chapter but you can imagine them how you prefer, their features are described in the story as well, anyway. There is also a playlist, give it a listen to get more in the mood of the story. (next chapter) If you don't find them you can go on my Tumblr account and you will find the direct link.
As I already said the story is completed, I'll publish a chapter every week. If I can I'll try to set a day and always post on it, it'll probably be more complicated once I'll start University again / when I'll have exams in September. (I still always check before posting and edit everything just to make sure everything is okay.)
I’m also posting this on wattpad but nowhere else. It’s forbidden to copy or steal my work, so if you see this anywhere else let me know because that’s not me.
That's it, love you all, comments are always appreciated because they motivate a lot and also I'd love to know what you think about the story as it goes on.

EM95 was sent to me courtesy of the nice people at ENY, so thank you all, and especially Kelvin, for the fast communication and help. ENY is a chinese manufacturer that mostly produces OEM models for other companies. I have already reviewed another of their boxes – the EKB368 (Z4) based on Rockchip’s RK3368 SOC.
EM95 is the new and first home branded S905 based model from ENY. It was designed to keep a low price tag while still providing more than adequate video performance.
What’s in the Box?
As can be seen in the unboxing clip, and the photo below, the included bundle is basic: EM95 TV Box, DC Power adapter, HDMI 2.0 cable, IR Remote Control, and a User manual. It matches the budget oriented hardware inside the box – 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of storage.
Looks
Unlike the first S905 box I tested, the Minix Neo U1, the EM95 is a simpler design without an external antenna. Its antenna is built into the box. The box is the standard square shape with grey lines
Specifications
Chipset Amlogic S905 Quad-Core ARM Cortex-A53 CPU up to 2.0 GHz (DVFS) GPU Penta-Core Mali-450 up to 750 Mhz ( DVFS) Memory / Storage 1GB DDR3 / 8GB LAN Ethernet:10/100M, standard RJ-45 Wireless Support IEEE802.11 b/g/n Bluetooth Bluetooth 4.0 (AP6212) OS Android 5.1 Video Output HDMI 2.0 (CEC and HDCP 2.2 ) , 4K X 2K @60 fps Audio Output / Input HDMI out, 3.5 mm AV Port, SPDIF (optical) Power DC 5V/2A Peripheral Interface 3 * USB 2.0 Host, 1 * SD/MMC card reader, 1 * SPDIF, 1 * 3.5mm Headphone Jack, 1 * HDMI(A type Male), 1 * RJ45 LAN Port Packing Included 1 * EM95, 1 * Adapter(DC 5V/2A), 1 * HDMI Cable ,1 * IR Remote Controller,1 * Quick Guide
Benchmarks and Testing
All benchmarks have been repeated 3 times and results have been averaged to give a more accurate reading:
* Antutu Benchmark
The Antutu benchmark tests single core performance over multi-core as it is a better indication of the performance of one device over others in most situations. The box shows that it’s single core performance is not the highest which is consistent with the S905 being a more “budget-y” SOC and not really meant for the high end products. Its location in the 6th place is still not too far from the S812 and RK3368 based boxes. * Recently, Antutu benchmark has been updated to version 6 which uses different parameters and sub-tests, so the graphs are still based on the older 5.7.2 version for comparison, but here is the result of the new (6.0.0) Antutu version: 35516
GPU Mark Benchmark
GPU Mark tests 3d gaming performance and also provides a normalized score according to the used screen resolution (for a more accurate result). The test is quite short and should be taken as a supporting result to that of the more serious 3D Mark benchmark.
A1 SD Benchmark
A1 SD Benchmark tests RAM and flash memory speeds. As can be seen in the provided graphs, RAM is much faster (by a factor of about 40) than flash memory – that is why it’s in smaller amount and is also volatile (does not keep its contents after a reboot). The EM95 surprises here with a third place in the RAM copy speed chart, and a respectable fifth place in the internal and SD card read/write performance chart.
PC Mark Benchmark
The PC Mark benchmark tests run several productivity tests and the U1 performed well in most of them. It reaches fifth place – partly due to the low amount of work RAM, but still very close to the results of Minix new star – the U1.
3D Mark Benchmark
3D Mark benchmark is considered as one of the best ways to test 3d performance on Android (and other platforms). Again, poor results due to the use of the older/weaker Mali-450 GPU and lower clock speed. And still one place bellow the U1.
Bugs & Issues
1. Google play store would not allow to install nearly all of it’s apps and games selection, giving this message instead: “your device isn’t compatible with this version” – This was quickly sorted out by the manufacturer by a firmware update. The fix did not work at first, but after a few reboots it did. However, google play services still do not work properly, but the next firmware update expected in a few days should correct it among other things.
2. 10 mb bug. Unable to copy to, rename on, or delete from connected USB drives. in my case it’s a 1.5 TB hard drive that works perfectly when connected to any other TV box. This is a known issue with ALL S905 out so far.
3. Add-ons installation – it requires repeat action almost every time since some dependencies fail to install. the installation succeeds the second time, but this happened in any Kodi version I tried (the 16 beta included, and SPMC 15)
4. Backing up XBMC/Kodi/SPMC to a folder either on the external USB drive or a Micro-SD card failed. (“not writable” error) It seems that small files can be written correctly to the targets, but bigger files just refuse to write. The targets are formatted in NTFS, and I was using compression in the backup add-on.
5. ES Explorer, a popular file manager is unable to retain passwords for network locations (SMB shares) and asks for them anew even though “remember password” tick box is checked.
6. Torrent streaming Kodi Add-ons still do not work (pulsar, Kmediatorrent and so on) in Kodi or Kodi variants.
Keep in mind that this is a brand new model and that those are most likely growing pains that will be ironed out in time. All issues have been reported to ENY and should be dealt with in future updates.
Add-ons that did work (tested) were: Earthcam, and SALTS. I will start testing a few selected Kodi Add-ons to let people have a better real-world picture of the devices I test.
Network performance
Network performance has been tested using Speedtest.net Internet speed measuring app, in WiFi and in Wired mode. My Internet connection is 200 Mbit Synchronous Fibre connection:
WiFi – 2.4GHz
Wired connection (Internet over Powerline – AV500)
Video Playback testing (Using KODI)
Resolution Video Format Local Playback Network (Wi-Fi/LAN) Playback 720p (1280*720) AVC ([email protected]) Playing correctly Playing correctly 1080P (1920*1080) AVC (High@L4) Playing correctly Playing correctly  2160P (3840*2160) HEVC (H.265) Playing correctly Playing correctly 4K (4096*2304) AVC ([email protected]) Playing correctly Long Pre-buffering (on Wifi. PLC over LAN is worse with stutter and buffering) 4K TS HEVC files HEVC (H.265) 10Bit Playing correctly Long Pre-buffering (on Wifi. PLC over LAN is worse with stutter and buffering)
Video playback is quite great. 10 Bit TS files that never worked before are now playing quite well, but bandwidth still affects playback, and the heavier the file is, the more of an issue it is. Wi-Fi performance is mediocre at best, and wired LAN (over Powerline) performance is lacking as well. ENY noted that the next build of the box will have better network performance.
Gaming performance
The EM95 comes pre-rooted, and for review purposes it is quite an important requirement. However, it did not help in this case as the measuring app (GameBench) did not work, so the results are all subjective:
Asphalt 8 Airborne – a 3d graphic intensive racing game. Game performance is fine in standard settings. It is not completely smooth, but is more than playable. I cannot offer frame rate count due to the reasons mentioned above.
Angry Birds 2 – a popular 2d action game. The gameplay was mostly smooth with a few stutters/jerks (both in picture and audio) along the way. The loading times were a little slower than I expected. Overall, a mediocre to good experience. The GPU/RAM handling may need some polishing to avoid these issues in the future, and it may also have to do with the “Google play services” bug that does not allow games to use it for game play tracking.
Walking War Robots – an online robot warfare game that requires a game-pad (I don’t have a game-pad). Game loaded fast and frame rate was quite satisfactory. The A2 Lite gyro function did not work with the game, so only directional arrows were used.
EM95 Conclusions
Did I like it? Not as much as other S905 boxes. It needs a few more firmware rounds to get where it should. The hardware compromises that were made means there is no Dual WiFi, and that cuts the box’s ability to run heavier videos smoothly. However, the manufacturer is aware of the issues, and promises to iron out bugs in the next firmware or two.
Would I recommend it? Yes, for the budget minded. The box still needs work, but the price (down to about 54 USD) is quite good, and it is a good performer (even with the lower RAM and storage) that is more future proof than the more expensive S812/RK3368 rivals.
The EM95, like all ENY boxes, comes pre-rooted. However, be aware that it comes with SuperUser app which does not open correctly, and you might want to install SuperSu and let it uninstall its predecessor.
So, you like it? You can buy the EM95 for a low price of 55.98 USD here:

What’s Been Lost
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The guitar at the top is a 1968 Gibson Johnny Smith model.  The picture below is a collection of all the parts I assembled my Precision Bass from.  These are two of my all-time favorite models of any instrument, in any period of history, but they represent two sides of a progression that we can’t reverse.
When Leo Fender released the Fender Broadcaster in 1950, it changed the world of instrument manufacturing forever.  If you think that this doesn’t impact the actual music...you need to adjust that view immediately.  The Fender Precision Bass alone almost completely eradicated the upright bass’ presence in popular music.
The Johnny Smith model from 1968 is a stunning example of human craftsmanship on a variety of levels.  My P-Bass is designed after a 1957 Precision Bass...an instrument 11 years older than the Gibson.  However...to this day, after numerous corporate changings of hands...you can still see how Fender is looking forward while Gibson is looking to the past.
This is not an argument about what’s better or worse, rather a discussion about what was lost in this progress forward.
***
I talk about music history a lot because context is important.
Johnny Smith was an old-school jazz guy.  He grew up in the jazz age...an age that didn’t have sophisticated amplification and PA systems and solid-bodied guitars.  The acoustic properties of a guitar were as paramount as the amplified ones.
You teach acoustically.  You practice acoustically.  You play in big bands and trios acoustically.  And these old “archtops” were designed specifically for this purpose.  They were big bodied and thunderous sounding.  A Gibson L-5 or Super 400 was designed to be heard through a big band’s mix acoustically, because amplification wasn’t a given.  And Gibson had been making guitars like this since the late 1800′s.
In contrast, Leo Fender started his company solely with electric guitars in mind.  It’s important to understand this dynamic, because it had long-reaching effects that not only impacted Gibson, but the music world as a whole.  And while a lot of this was for the better, there were casualties along the way.
***
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s hard to think of this as new school and old school, but it’s a HUGE change.
The top image is a modern version of the classic Johnny Smith floating pickup.  You can see that the pickup is reflecting off the top, and that it’s not attached to the guitar itself anywhere.  The pickup is mounted on the pickguard, and no screws were put into the guitar’s top itself, to preserve all the acoustic qualities.
Wes Montgomery was a new school guitarist when he hit the scene, as weird as it is to think of a 60′s jazz guitarist in those terms.  You can see that his guitar has a hole drilled into the top, with the pickup screwed into a mounting bracket.  This helped tremendously in keeping the big, hollow guitar from feeding back...and was much more suited for amplified playing.  Floating pickups from this era were essentially afterthoughts...”hey you need to plug into something, and this doesn’t fuck with the top.”
I’ve played both floating and fixed pickup archtops.  An archtop with a fixed pickup is not a great acoustic experience.  Sure, it amplifies an acoustic sound, but it’s neither loud nor particularly pleasing.  Plugged in is a different story, but there wasn’t much of a window this style of guitar proved to be practical in, even if it was an improvement over a floater.
But this was Gibson, the company, saying “we see the movement music is making, and we need to adjust.”
They might have been kings of the arcthop, jazz era...but Fender essentially said they’re not even going to challenge in this area, instead focus on the future.  To their credit, Gibson made moves in this regard with the solidbodied Les Paul...but there was still tremendous demand for the old school archtops, as the music industry still had a spot for guitarists like this.
***
Gibson themselves kind of killed their archtop legacy in 1958, when they released the iconic ES-335.  They had a number of other smaller, thinner bodied archtops, but the 335′s centerblock underneath changed the game.
You could still get an airy jazz sound out of it, but now you also had access to all the overdriven rock sounds that were blossoming during this time.  And the 335 still retained a lot of the hallmarks of Gibson’s craftsmanship you see in their archtops, but at a much more approachable price.
Same with the Les Paul.  If you didn’t want a “jazz guitar” then this is where you went.  And while there are degrees of craftsmanship involved in the 335 and Les Paul, it’s nothing anywhere near the level of expertise you see in Gibson’s archtops.
This is to say nothing of Fender-style guitars, which don’t require any craftsmanship at all.  It’s hard to compare hand-curved sides of beautifully aged flamed maple, ebony overlays, mother-of-pearl inlays, gilded hardware, pristince spruce tops...to instruments you can put together with a screwdriver.
Wood doesn’t matter with a Fender.  It’s almost a subtractive influence on the tone, rather than an essential ingredient.  It’s incredibly unfair to say this, also not true whatsoever...but there’s really nothing special about a Fender.  Even in the lauded pre-CBS era, it wasn’t made by a single person, it was made on a conveyer belt, and it’s just a machine or tool rather than an instrument.
Again, that’s not fair...but in comparison to a vintage Gibson?  It’s 100% accurate.
***
If you’ve never played guitar...any instrument really...and you’ve never experienced playing a Fender-style against an expertly crafted archtop, it’s hard to understand this dynamic.  Even talking primo vintage or boutique versions, the experience just isn’t the same.
To the audience, this might not matter, but to musicians it’s HUGE.  The personal experience of actually playing an instrument like these archtops is special.  Not “baby gloves” special, but special in the sense that this instrument is not something you can just go and play at Guitar Center.
Few weeks ago, I talked about vintage electric guitars...and while playing a 1959 Strat, both me and the guy who was selling it agreed we wouldn’t trade it for our modern-Strat variants.  But acoustic instruments are different beasts, and age differently.  A solid Fender or Les Paul isn’t going to change much as its wood ages...but an acoustic guitar absolutely does.
Spruce is a very resinous wood, and as the thin top ages, that resin starts to evaporate, radically changing the acoustic qualities of the guitar.  A certain “crispiness” and “airiness” comes out in a very pleasing way.
Electric guitars create a pleasing sound for a bigger audience.  But acoustic guitars are more personal.  More intimate.  They have a character all to themselves.  As music becomes more electric and less intimate, this is lost.  We could talk about electric acoustic guitars, but that’s a discussion for another day*.
*Spoiler Alert...I think acoustic guitars with pickups sound like utter shit, and it’s a stupid ass thing to do in the first place.  Play a fucking Strat or an old Gretsch or *GASP* an old Gibson archtop.
***
So, to answer the question, what have we lost?
We’ve lost craftsmanship.  That’s not to say the progress made hasn’t been worth it...if I haven’t made this clear yet lets get it settled, there is zero practical advantage in playing an old-school archtop today, and a whole lot of pains in the ass.
But there’s a distinct lack of charm in today’s instruments, even high-end custom shop models and from boutique makers.  Guitars supposedly one of a kind seem completely mass produced.  For example, I found over 400 used examples of Gibson Custom Shop’s flagship Les Paul that ranges from $6,500-$8,500.  Check out their “Murphy Lab” of supposed one-offs and try not to gasp at the prices.
But, to my point, how could you possibly feel there’s anything special or unqiue about any of this, buying one of them new?
All of these modern guitars are significantly easier to make than those old archtops, and there’s a substantial premium built into the price due to the artificial aging.  I’m sorry, but that’s not craftsmanship as I like to think about it.  Again, this has nothing to do with the practicality of the instruments, just emotive content.
Below, I’m going to highlight a bunch of features you find on these beautiful old archtops.  You don’t find this on guitars made by anyone anymore.  Gibson will do an L-5 or something as a special one off, but these guitars are artifacts of a time long gone.
***
Tumblr media
Wood Quality - Here’s the sad truth...Fender, Gibson and Martin completely eviscerated the old-growth forests that had the highest quality woods in the ‘50′s and ‘60′s.  You just don’t get this type of incredible wood anymore, even when paying a premium.  The spruce top on the Super 400 above is violin quality.
***
Tumblr media
Inlay - Look at that motherfucking inlay!!!!!!!!!!!!!  If you’re dropping $8k plus on a guitar, would you rather have workmanship like that?  Or like this?
Tumblr media
***
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Flamed Maple Necks w/ a “Stinger” - The stinger is an ebony overlay on the back of the headstock, something aesthetic only that’s like a treat for the person playing it.  You can see in the top two L-5 and Super 400 pictures that the stinger travels down the middle of the neck, while on the bottom Johnny Smith that has a 3-piece neck, it adorns the top and bottom.
The wood the neck is made of likely has little impact on the guitar’s overall sound, but it’s beautiful.
When I started to show promise on guitar, I started classical and jazz lessons with this hardcore motherfucker drill sergeant who had one of the most beautiful guitars I’ve ever seen (made by Brad Nickerson), the flamed maple neck especially.  Every time I was fortunate enough for him to let me play it, the sensation of wrapping my hand around that neck and seeing the beautiful flamed maple is something I’ve been chasing for decades, and still haven’t found.
The idea that it’s a “treat for the player” totally resonates with me.  The audience doesn’t care, nobody else is going to touch this guitar, it’s expensive as hell for no other reason than looks...but it’s a treat for the player that makes the instrument more special.  I do bond with my guitars, and while I love playing all different kinds, ownership is different.
I’ll have my flamed maple neck someday.
***
Tumblr media
“The Scroll”/Point - This probably makes the most sense as to why Gibson stopped doing this, no matter how cool it looked.  As guitar became more amplified, and more virtuosos emerged utilizing the upper registers of the guitar, this ornate little detail took up precious real estate where you could add more frets.  For old-school jazz guys, only having 20-frets wasn’t a big deal at all.  Different story in the modern era.
***
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ornate Hardware - You can see a variety of different, unique tailpieces above.  The top two are L-5 tailpieces...which were pretty consistent throughout, occasionally putting an artist’s name on the middle section and subtly changing up the engraving.  The Super 400 was consistent all the way through, in terms of the design...but would feature unique engravings over the various eras.
Below is the tailpiece you get on a brand new $8,500 guitar today.  More practical?  Absolutely.  But it doesn’t have the same charm as the gilded stuff.
Tumblr media
***
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cool Little Touches - Yea I know it seems weird complaining about a guitar company in the modern era not engaging in cost-prohibitive things like making guitars seem personalized and unique.  But back in the heyday of these guitars, they were personalized and unique.  Typically made by the same small handful of skilled craftsman...not in huge teams with CNC machines.
Those cool little features...the mother-of-pearl heart inlay on the Wes Montgomery L-5, and the hand engraved “Super 400″ on the butt of the guitar’s neck...it’s hard to say guitars made by people willing to obsess over details like that are replaceable or mass produced.  As much care and art went into making the instruments themselves, as it did from the musicians using it to create.
The 7-ply binding on the bodies and 5-ply binding on the neck and headstock looked absolutely gorgeous.  It serves zero purpose, but just looks really fuckin’ cool.
***
Listen, I get why we don’t see shit like this on guitars anymore...even guitars made by Gibson.  But still, these are artifacts of a niche of history that is already gone.  The progress of the future leaving you behind doesn’t mean that something necessarily bad or unwanted, it might just not fit.
But there’s something sad in things like this being lost to the march of time.  You see little details like these, and you know that an expert human being was responsible for creating this...not some machine or some underpaid laborer.  It takes years to develop the skills necessary to make things like you see in the images above.
And while that doesn’t diminish the quality of the craftsmanship and sound of modern guitars, there’s something missing that you get with guitars in this style.
Whether it’s the macro guitar world moving towards solid bodied guitars that require less craftsmanship...or the macro guitar world moving towards amplified styles of music and away from its acoustic roots...what’s been lost is an appreciation for a guitarist’s personal connection with their instrument.

Tencent Black Shark Game Phone 3 was officially released online. This Tencent Black Shark 3 Gaming Phone is the world’s first 5G game phone created by Black Shark Technology in conjunction with Tencent Games and Xiaomi. Tencent Black Shark 3 Pro, all equipped with Qualcomm SnapDragon 865 processor, 5G SA / NSA dual-mode support, WiFi6 support, all-in-one gaming screen, 65W dual-battery fast flash charge, 64MP AI three cameras, equipped with a new JOYUI 11 operating system based on MIUI 11.
The mobile phone manufacturers and mobile game industry leaders have joined forces to make layer-by-layer optimizations on popular mobile games, design game functions from the perspective of players, and upgrade the original hardware advantages to create this perfect Tencent Black Shark 3.
Tencent Black Shark 3 Design & Appearance
#gallery-0-5 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-5 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-5 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-5 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
The packaging of the Tencent Black Shark 3 is still as hard as ever, with a pure black appearance and looming lines, the silver LOGO is printed in the middle, and the Hi-Res LOGO is printed on the side. Taking out the body, you can see that the texture design on the back of the phone is exactly the same as the front of the box.
At the bottom of the back, there is a magnetic charging port, which can prevent the hands from being blocked during charging. Three camera modules arranged in a triangle shape at the top. At the top is a microphone opening. The back of the Tencent Black Shark Game Phone 3 is absolutely symmetrical, and it maintains a consistent feel no matter what direction it is held in.
On the front of the mobile phone, there is no pursuit of the ultimate screen ratio. A certain width of the frame is left and right. The perfect screen design has no traces of digging holes, water drops, or notch. Close-up on the top, you can see the speaker + handset and front camera.
Design
The close-up of the chin is completely symmetrical. Similar to the top, a speaker is placed. The dual speakers have better sound effects, and they are not set on the side to avoid blocking the sound in the holding state. At the bottom are a Type-C connector and a microphone opening.
At the top, the classic 3.5mm headphone jack is finally back. The position of the noise reduction microphone, as mentioned earlier, is placed above the rear camera module, so the top cannot be seen. On the left, the SIM card slot can be used to insert two Nano-SIM cards; there is also a volume button.
On the right, near the top is the power button, and near the bottom is the game button. You can switch between the dedicated game space and the normal system by turning the game button. Included accessories, a transparent silicone case, charger, and power cord. The charger supports a maximum of 66W fast charge, but the Tencent Black Shark 3 uses a 65W fast charge specification.
Tencent Black Shark 3 Hardware & Performance
As a gaming phone, you don’t need to worry too much about the performance of Tencent Black Shark Gaming Phone 3. Snapdragon 865’s flagship configuration, coupled with its excellent three-layer liquid-cooled heat dissipation, compared to general mobile phones, gaming mobile phones are more aggressive in hardware scheduling, and their performance will be slightly ahead. Next, let’s take a look at the powerful performance of Tencent’s Black Shark Gaming Phone 3 by running a comparison between the running software and the actual game.
1.Master Lu
As a cross-platform performance testing software, Master Lu can use quantified scores to show the performance of mobile phone CPU, GPU, memory, and flash memory, and show them in the form of rankings and total scores, even small white users can easily understand.
Geekbench
Geekbench 4 is a cross-platform CPU performance test software. It tests the single-core and multi-core performance of mobile phones and evaluates the performance according to four categories: integer performance, floating-point performance, encryption performance, and memory performance. The score is used to judge CPU performance.
This time I also increased the score of Geekbench 5. Compared with the 4th generation, memory performance is no longer used as an evaluation standard. Its weight is incorporated into the integer performance that affects the overall performance. Strong performance.
3.AndroBench
AndroBech is a mobile phone memory performance testing software, which can test the mobile phone’s continuous read and write random read and write, and database performance. It has great reference significance for the type and performance of mobile phone flash memory.
4.GFXbench
GFXbench is a cross-platform, cross-API 3D benchmarking software that accurately reflects the graphics performance of the device’s GPU. Multiple test scenarios can fully investigate the OpenGL ES graphics performance of the device and can perform battery life tests.
GFXBench provides two test comparison methods: OnScreen and OffScreen. When the screen is running, the test is run at the native resolution of the device screen. When the screen is off, it is unified to 1080p resolution, which is convenient for cross-device comparison.
There are six main test items: T-Rex, Manhattan 3.0, Manhattan 3.1, and Car Chase, which correspond to the performance under the OpenGL ES 2.0 / 3.0 / 3.1 / 3.1 standards. There are also newly added Aztec ruins Vulkan off-screen and Aztec ruins OpenGL off-screen. The test pressure is getting higher and higher, and the result is measured by the average frame rate (FPS).
From the results of the running scores, the performance of the Tencent Black Shark gaming phone 3 in terms of CPU and GPU is in line with the improvement level of Snapdragon 865, and the flash memory performance is the standard UFS 3.0 score; Master Lu ’s score is improved because it is a comprehensive score The magnitude is larger. Easily surpassed last year’s Snapdragon 855+ flagship.
Game performance test
In terms of game testing, I selected 5 popular online games and tested their frame performance. The specific games are: “Breakdown 3”, “Glory of the King”, “Crossfire”, “Peace Elite” and “Ace Fighter”. All games are set to the highest quality, play and watch the frame number change.
Of the five games, only “Ace Fighter” supports the 90Hz refresh rate mode. However, due to its game design, the number of frames will be locked to about 45 frames when killed, so the average value calculated in the figure is wrong, and the actual performance should be 80 —Between 90FPS. Due to game design reasons, some interfaces in “Ace Fighter” do not support 90Hz, resulting in a low average value.
Thermal performance test
While testing the performance of 5 game frames, the author also recorded the temperature change. Let’s take a look at the thermal performance of the Tencent Black Shark Gaming Phone 3.
In the game, the most serious temperature rise is “Peace Elite”. This is because in ultra-high-definition quality, the limit frame rate and anti-aliasing are turned on at the same time, which causes a large load. However, according to the statistics of the number of frames, the high temperature has not affected the number of frames of the game. That is to say, the heat dissipation specifications of the Tencent Black Shark gaming phone 3 are sufficient to ensure that it runs under high load and emits heat in a timely manner in case of a large amount of heat and avoids it. Frequency reduction.
At the same time, the author tested the surface temperature of the Tencent Black Shark 3 mobile phone body after playing “Peace Elite”. Most of the heat is discharged through the metal middle frame and the metal backplate on the back. The glass has poor thermal conductivity and low temperature. To a certain soaking effect. The highest temperature appears on the back of the decorative metal, which is 40.4 ° C.
Tencent Black Shark 3 Battery
Tencent Black Shark 3 is equipped with a 4720mAh battery, which guarantees that its battery life is still at the flagship level under the premise of having a Snapdragon 865, 90Hz high-screen display, and RGB lighting effects. The 65W super fast charge used in this upgrade guarantees Tencent Black Shark Gaming Mobile Phone 3, while all the performance and firepower in the game are fully turned on, the power can still be recharged at a high speed. Let’s pass the actual test and see how it performs.
Video endurance test
We chose the software bilibili to play online videos to test video endurance. We chose an online video to play at 1080P resolution, with a brightness setting of 100% and a volume setting of 60%, to record changes in power. The video is played for half an hour and consumes 6% of the power. The estimated battery life is about 8.3 hours.
Game endurance test
It is still the five games tested before. With the highest picture quality and full-frame operation and the support of the 90Hz high-swipe screen, the power consumption of Tencent Black Shark 3 is quite high when running these games. Average battery discharge current during five gaming tests
According to calculations, the theoretical battery life of the five games under test conditions. Because the highest picture quality that can be played by different games is different, the power consumption is also different. Tencent Black Shark 3 In the test of five games, “Crossing Fire: King of Gunfight” has the best battery life, 7.13 hours, and “Peace Elite” has a poor battery life, 3.12 hours.
For gaming phones, no matter what games you have to be able to run at full frame with high image quality, games with more configuration power consumption are faster and unavoidable, but Tencent Black Shark Gaming Phone 3 has the help of 65W super fast charge this time. Whether it is charging while playing, or directly charging the screen when the battery is low, the speed is very fast.
Charging curve test
Not only the peak charging power of 65W, but the Tencent Black Shark Gaming Phone 3’s also charging capacity in the first 10 minutes is better than similar phones with similar fast-charging power. In less than 40 minutes, you can charge the battery from 3% to 99%. This speed can be said to meet your gaming needs throughout the day.
The fast charge will increase the heat of the phone at the same time, but I tested the temperature. Similar to the heating situation during gaming, the heat dissipation of Tencent Black Shark 3 is also mainly completed by two metal decorations on the back and a metal middle frame during charging. Heat is concentrated in these areas. During charging, the highest temperature recorded was 37.1 ° C. As charging completes, the temperature here will drop rapidly.
Cameras
As a gaming phone, camera performance is arguably the least important parameter for players. However, the Tencent Black Shark 3 is not ready for the rear camera stack. The 64-megapixel main camera uses the popular CMOS of the middle and high-end last year, GW 1, and it can shoot through the pixel 4-in-1 algorithm. A good 16-megapixel photo. In addition, there is a blessing of a 13 million wide-angle lens to unlock a wider perspective for your daily shooting.
With the help of the 64-megapixel GW1, the Tencent Black Shark Gaming Phone 3 has a good imaging effect during the day. The size of the photos produced by 256M composite is very amazing. A single image will be about 80M, which can be said to be a killer of full storage space. From the perspective of user experience and imaging quality, the 256M synthesis function is more like an entertainment-based extra function, which does not actually improve your daily photos.
At night, the performance of Tencent Black Shark Game Phone 3 is also a test of the stability of your arm due to the absence of optical image stabilization. Multiple exposures in night mode can effectively suppress highlights and brighten shadows. Even when facing the street lights, there were no big halos or ghosts, which shows that Tencent Black Shark Game Phone 3 has worked hard on the lens and is worthy of praise.
In general, the Tencent Black Shark Gaming Phone 3 as a gaming phone has such pleasant image quality. GW1 as the main camera. The hardware foundation is sufficient, in good weather conditions. The film quality is commendable. However, the performance of the night mode needs to be optimized.
Experience
As a gaming phone, precise control is naturally the top priority. The Black Shark naturally made a lot of preparations for this.
First of all, it is an excellent gaming screen with a refresh rate of 90Hz and a screen sampling rate of up to 270Hz. The game touch of Tencent Black Shark 3 can be said to be quite smooth and accurate. The response time is shorter at high sampling rates, and the aiming and moving are smoother at high refresh rates. Which will undoubtedly improve your game level.
Of course, you do n’t have to worry about increasing power consumption. The smart detection of Tencent Black Shark Gaming Phone 3 will automatically enable the 90Hz refresh rate in the supporting scenes. Ensuring that you will not lose your battery crazy while you have the best experience
On top of this, a very useful screen pressure sensing technology is added. Tencent Black Shark Gaming Phone 3 uses the latest screen pressure 3.0. The area is enlarged by 100%, which is basically close to the full-screen pressure sensitivity. The number of pressure-sensitive levels increased on the software meets the needs of high-end players for pressure-sensitive pressure. Coupled with the horizontal linear motor and screen pressure sensitivity, while increasing the control dimension.
All the games on the phone will be displayed in the game space. You can customize any game, including performance mode, display effect, touch sensitivity, audio, network, etc.
Tencent Black Shark Mobile 3 also provides a very useful Black Shark Moment feature. Which automatically records your wonderful performance in the game. Ensuring that every Tianxiu operation can be clearly recorded.
Verdict
In the past, people always thought that gaming phones should be beasts of performance. But in fact, not only gaming phones but most Android models using the same platform. It is difficult to have a very obvious gap in performance. This urges game mobile phone manufacturers to start from the user. Not go to the light hardware stacking luxury hardware specifications. But also consider the player’s needs, players’ feelings, and make targeted functions.
With 90Hz high refresh rate + 270Hz strongest touch sampling rate and upgraded screen pressure sensitivity 3.0. Tencent Black Shark gaming phone not only achieves the industry’s strongest touch accuracy but also doubles the control dimension. Needless to say, the benefits of a more responsive and faster screen. With the combination of pressure and even voice control.
Finally, let’s talk about externality. The appearance design of the Tencent Black Shark 3 embodies the supreme design aesthetics of the game. It is not necessary to have RGB for lighting effects but to exaggerate the shape in order to be cool. From the layout of its dual speakers, the layout of the phone screen. The back, and the location of the microphone. It is all about serving the best posture for holding with both hands during gaming.
At present. The homogenization of mobile phones, especially mobile phones with this special feature, is often very serious. If you want to kill a bloodstream. Hardware manufacturers abandon the idea of lone rangers and cooperate with game manufacturers is an option. Make your own mobile phone more and more characteristic, let users use mobile phones to play manufacturers’ games handier. The player’s must-have costume, Tencent Black Shark 3 Gaming Phone, is the best proof of this win-win choice.

Lost (and Found) in Translation
I’m about to hit 6 months since my solo nomadic journey began. Crazy right?! Since that time I have traveled and spent time in many non-English speaking countries—Thailand, Singapore, Mexico, Colombia, Peru. English is a valuable language to know and is often a second language in many countries. Traveling throughout Southeast Asia and Europe is almost spoiling on some levels. You almost always find people who speak English. In Central and South America, however, that is not as widely the case. I know very little Spanish, and the tiny bit I do know includes ‘habla Ingles‘ (speak English?) or ‘mi espanol es no bueno’ (my spanish is no good).
I have run into some interesting occurrences throughout this journey. And Google Translate is not always my friend. It botches translations and is not always accurate. But it does help me more than if I did not have it.
Colombia placed me in challenging situations of being lost and not knowing how to find my way, to dealing with the frustration of not being able to connect with people I meet—simply because we do not speak each other’s language.
Even without knowing another person’s language, you can still find the common language of kindness, laughter, and appreciation.
When I first arrived in Colombia, I connected with a taxi driver to take me to my guest house. He was super nice. He waited for me to get money out of the ATM and carried my bags to the car for me. On the way to the city, he could see me taking pictures out of the window. I’m sure he could tell this was my first time in Medellin. He pulled over on the side of the road so that I could get some better shots. When I arrived at my destination, he wrote down his name and WhatsApp number. In botched English he invited me to remember him for any rides I would need during my time there. I did contact Andres again. He picked me up to take me back to the airport when it was time to leave Medellin. He gave me a hug and a kiss on the cheek when he dropped me off at the airport. He was very happy that I remembered him. I then shared his contact information with other friends to use him.
I had a similar instance happen while in Cartagena. I got in an Uber, and once again, the driver and I did not speak the same language. He helped me to repeat a few Spanish words, and was very eager to help. Two days later, I arranged for another Uber, and it was the same driver! I’ve never had this happen before. He got so excited when he saw me and gave me a big hug when I got in the car.
For these drivers, even though we didn’t speak each other’s language, we could still share the language of smiling and laughter.
Even when you do not know the language, people are eager to help you learn.
I took a weekend trip to Taganga after leaving Cartagena. It is a small fishing village on the Caribbean. Although it is a popular tourist destination, many of the locals do not speak English. Taganga is near Tayrona National Park which includes many private, preserved beaches. I arranged for a day trip to one of the beaches. I am often too attached to my phone; I rely on it to communicate, stay up to date, get me around, and take pictures. I decided that day to leave it behind. I wouldn’t need a phone where I was going and it would be a good exercise to disconnect. I did bring my GoPro so was still able to capture some pictures. When I returned back to Taganga after a long day on the beach, I realized that I did not know how to get to my Airbnb. I had arrived at dark the night before so was not yet familiar with the area. And to add to that, I am very directionally challenged (even with a map). Since I had left my phone behind, I had to go old-school and navigate my way and ask. I walked around for nearly an hour trying to find my Airbnb. I would ask everyone I passed in botched Spanish “Where is Casa Mandala?” I would either get blank stares of given hand gestures to directions to Villa Mandala (not the same place). Finally when I felt that all was lost (literally), I was yelled at by a man sitting on his porch. He started speaking to me in Spanish, and I told him my Spanish was not good. He knew very little English, and could tell I was lost. I stood on the street for about 10 minutes learning Spanish from him. He wasn’t going to let me off the hook. He would say a word or phrase and then have me repeat it back to him. After my Spanish lesson, he pointed me in the direction where I needed to go. Manuel was very kind and patient with me. Such a rewarding experience.
Hand gestures are a form of language, and can be very powerful.
While staying at my Airbnb in Taganga, I met a really nice young man. My host told me that he is deaf and has been since birth. Since it is a poorer area, the resources are not available to help educate people with disabilities. He has never learned to read or write, nor learn sign language. Despite never learning any of that, he has persevered. He is a bright young man who has created his own construction business. He was putting a new roof up at my host’s house. He communicates to her and his workers through grunting sounds and hand gestures. My host explained to me that he has learned much of his trade either through in-person observation or via YouTube videos. I was absolutely amazed at all that he has created. And humbled by his work ethic and ability to not let his disability hold him back.
A friendly or common face can be of support in times of desperation.
After leaving Taganga, I bid farewell to Colombia and flew to Cusco, Peru. On my flight, I sat next to a younger girl likely in her early 20s. We didn’t talk on the plane, only exchanged a smile here and there. When we arrived at the airport, I learned that my bag did not make it. It was still in Bogota. I spent a while with Customer Service working out the details of getting my bag back. Once that was complete, I walked out of the terminal to try and find a taxi. I stopped at one point and felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned around, and it was the girl who sat next to me on the plane. She started speaking to me in fast Spanish. I told her that I didn’t speak Spanish. She then gestured to my phone. I opened Google translate and she began to type a message. I learned that she had a 6 am flight out the next morning and had nowhere to stay. She was asking for my help. I paused a moment, and thought of offering up my airbnb space. I messaged my host and she was okay with me adding someone else. Then I learned of the time of her flight and we decided it would be too far of a commute that early in the morning. I then spent the next 2 hours with Breece. We grabbed a coffee and searched several options. I called and messaged several places. I finally found her a hostel only 10 min from the airport with airport transportation. I accompanied her to the hostel to ensure she got checked in okay. I sensed that she was not a seasoned travel and nervous about doing this on her own. She was from Venezuela, and it was her first time in Peru. She gave me a big hug in the end. And later messaged me how grateful she was for my help. As my sister put it, I was her angel for the day.
Travel introduces you to so many challenges, obstacles, and unforgettable moments.
If you do not travel much, you may read this and wonder why put yourself through all of this?
Travel boosts your confidence. With each challenge or obstacle, my level of confidence increases more. I feel more empowered and more confident to try new experiences. It shows me that I am capable and can make it.
You learn survival skills and other ways to navigate. I love problem solving and a good challenge. Travel opens me up to a whole world of that. It teaches me how to make it on my own and how to rely on others when I need help. It shows me there is more than one way to get somewhere or even communicate.
You meet people you likely may not meet otherwise. With each story I shared, and each memory I have, I am grateful for all of the people I meet. I may not know who they are, and I may never see them again. Meeting people from all over the world living many different ways is very humbling and eye-opening. I am grateful for each person I encounter, because I walk away with a new lesson learned or story to share.
I do hope to learn Spanish one day. I know I miss out on connecting with people on deeper levels by not knowing the language of the countries where I travel. And even without that knowledge, I still am able to communicate and learn something new.

Android through the ages: from Cupcake to P and everything in between
http://www.internetunleashed.co.uk/?p=33263 Android through the ages: from Cupcake to P and everything in between - http://www.internetunleashed.co.uk/?p=33263 Android was announced more than a decade ago, on November 5, 2007. Since that initial announcement, the mobile platform has come a long, long way.Android has the largest install base of any operating system, mobile or desktop. And it's not just in phones and tablets: smart TVs, cars, smartwatches and smart home devices are all powered by the little green man. From the original beta to Android P through Android Froyo, Lollipop, Marshmallow and more, we track Android's rise from unlikely start to acquisition by Google and today's dominance. 10 years of Android: 10 times it wowed the world In October 2003 Android, Inc was founded by Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Nick Sears and Chris White. Its aim was to create an advanced operating system for digital cameras, turning them in to "smarter mobile devices that are more aware of its owner's location and preferences," according to Rubin. It soon became apparent that there wasn't much of a market for that, so Android, Inc. turned its attention to smartphones in a bid to rival mobile operating systems Symbian and Windows mobile. After a shaky start, where funding became an issue, Android, Inc was acquired by Google on August 17 2005, and a number of Android, Inc. employees stayed on. A team led by Rubin began work on a mobile device operating system based on the Linux kernel. The green Android logo was designed by Irina Blok, and the beta version was released on November 5, 2007. Android 1.0, the first commercial version of Android, was released on September 23, 2008, with the first commercially available Android device being the HTC Dream.Even though it was the first official release, Android 1.0 brought a number of features that we've come to rely on, including a web browser, camera support, Gmail synchronisation with the Gmail app, YouTube video player, Google Maps, Contacts and Calendar synchronisation as well.Applications could be downloaded through the Android Market and launched from the Home screen. An update, Android 1.1, was released on February 9, 2009, adding a few new features and fixing a range of bugs. The Android 1.5 update was launched on April 27, 2009, and it is notable for being the first Android release to have a code name based on a dessert – something that has since become a trademark. Each new version since also gets a dessert-inspired statue erected on the lawn of Google's headquarters in Mountain View, California. But why the dessert names? According to Randall Sarafa, a Google spokesperson who talked to CNN: "It's kind of like an internal team thing, and we prefer to be a little bit - how should I say - a bit inscrutable in the matter. The obvious thing is that, yeah, the Android platform releases, they go by dessert names and by alphabetical order for the most part."With Android 1.5 Cupcake new features were introduced such as widgets, which were small versions of apps that can be viewed from the home screen. Android 1.5-equipped smartphones could also record video in MPEG-4 format, Bluetooth devices could auto pair and stream stereo audio, and user pictures could be added to favourite contacts. Android 1.6 Donut was released on September 15, 2009. Android looked better than ever thanks to support for WVGA (780 x 480) resolution screens, and apps such as Gallery and Camera were better integrated, letting you take photos and then view them quickly and easily.Voice and text search was also improved to include bookmarks, history, contacts and content from the internet, and app developers were able to include their content in the search results. This meant that Android 1.6 Donut felt like the most coherent version of Android so far. On October 26 we got our third major Android release of 2009 with Android 2.0 Éclair. This important update included Microsoft Exchange email support, along with the ability to browse emails from a number of different accounts in the same inbox.Text messages were also improved, allowing users to search all of their saved SMS and MMS messages, and typing speed was improved on the virtual keyboard. The camera app got additional features as well, including flash support, digital zoom scene modes, colour effects and macro focus mode.Android 2.0.1 was released on December 3, 2009, and Android 2.1 followed on January 12, 2010, both bringing minor improvements and bug fixes. Android 2.2 Froyo hit devices on May 20, 2010. "Froyo" is frozen yoghurt, in case you were worried Google had confused desserts with annoying children's toys .This update included a number of speed and performance optimisations. USB tethering and Wi-Fi hotspot functionality, now commonplace on smartphones, were brought in with Android 2.2. You could also prevent your device from downloading data over your mobile network, which was helpful for keeping your phone bill under control, and you could create passwords using both numbers and letters for additional security. The Market application was also improved to allow batch and automatic updates of the apps you've installed, and high PPI (Pixel Per Inch) screens were supported for better image quality.Android Froyo is now so sparsely used though, Google doesn't consider it worth supporting anymore. Under 0.1% of people are using Android Froyo anymore. Android 2.3 Gingerbread was released on December 6, 2010 with an updated user interface that prioritised ease of use and speed. The onscreen keyboard was also overhauled for more intuitive text input and improved accuracy.Near Field Communication (NFC) was included for the first time, and the new Download Manager made keeping track of files you downloaded from the internet or your emails easier than ever.Native support for gyroscopes, barometers and other sensors meant your Android device could now feature advanced apps that accurately track your location, movement and activity. On February 22, 2011 Google launched its first tablet-only Android update: Android 3.0 Honeycomb, and two days later the first device to have the update preinstalled, the Motorola Xoom, was released. As Android 3.0 Honeycomb was a strictly tablet-focused release, a new "holographic" user interface was ushered in with the update. The System Bar brought notifications and the soft navigation buttons to the bottom of the screen. These navigation buttons, which include the Back, Home and Recent Applications icons, have become a common sight on Android devices, and allowed phone and tablet manufacturers to make completely button-free devices. The bottom of the screen wasn't getting all the love, however, with the Action Bar being brought to the top of the screen, offering contextual options, navigation and widgets.Other improvements to the user interface included multiple browser tabs, an "incognito" mode for anonymous browsing, and advanced views for contacts and emails.Multicore processors were supported for the first time as well, ushering a new generation of powerful Android devices.Android 3.1 launched on May 10 2011 and brought USB connectivity for accessories, FLAC audio playback and resizeable Home screen widgets. A further update, Android 3.2, included support for Google TV. Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich released on October 18 2011 and was promised to be compatible with any device that was running Android 2.3 or later. The Holo interface was given a major revamp, and a brand new typeface, Roboto, was brought in as the default system font for Android.Folders were overhauled to be easier to create using drag and drop commands, apps could be accessed from the lock screen, the camera app was improved and now supported 1080p video recording, and the web browser could now synchronise with user's Chrome bookmarks.Face Unlock, which uses facial recognition to unlock devices, was also included, though even now many of us wonder why Google bothered. On July 9 2012, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean was released, and the main aim of the update was to improve the user interface in both performance and features. Special attention was lavished on the graphics side of the operating system, including technology that would ensure the interface would run at 60 frames per second to make it feel smooth and responsive.Sound was also improved with multi channel audio support, USB audio and gapless playback. Third party app launchers were also given better support, allowing users to tailor their Android experience.Android 4.2 followed on November 13, 2012, which brought widget support to the lock screen and allowed you to swipe to directly launch the camera app. Quick Settings was added to the top power controls menu, Daydream screensavers were included and multiple user accounts were now supported on tablets.Android 4.3 was released on July 24, 2013, and included a number of new features including Open GL ES 3.0 support for improved graphics in games, Bluetooth low energy features, right-to-left language support and compatibility with 4K screens. For a while Google was expected to go with the codename Key Lime Pie, however on October 31, 2013, Android 4.4 was released with the more identifiable KitKat moniker, and the first device to run it was the Nexus 5, which was released on the same day.A number of tweaks were made to give the interface a fresh look, but it wasn't all about aesthetics. A new "immersive mode" was also included, which allowed apps to hide the onscreen buttons and status bar when they're not needed, giving the apps use of the full screen. If you needed the buttons at any time you could swipe down from the top of the screen or up from the bottom to bring them back.NFC host card emulation was another new feature, and although it doesn't sound particularly exciting, it meant that a device running Android 4.4 could emulate an NFC card and talk to NFC readers, allowing you to use your device to pay for goods, and make use of other contactless features. You can read our review of Android 4.4 KitKat to see what we made of all the new features. Announced: March 2014 | Released (on devices): June 2014On March 18, 2014 Android Wear, a version of Android specifically designed for smartwatches and wearables, was released.Android Wear uses Google Now and mobile notifications to bring important information to wearable tech, though you need to pair it with a smartphone running Android 4.3 or later to get the full experience. The first Android Wear devices, the Samsung Gear Live and the LG G Watch, were launched on June 25, 2014, with the Moto 360 coming later on September 5, 2014.Android Wear has been a big hit, with estimates that over 720,000 Android Wear smartwatches were shipped in the six months after its launch. On December 10, 2014, an update was released that added the ability to create and install custom watch faces, and updated the software to Android 5.0 Lollipop. Announced: June 2014 | Released: November 2014Android 5.0 Lollipop, was first announced on June 25, 2014, during the Google I/O conference, and became officially available on November 12, 2014.Once again the interface received a major overhaul, this time getting the flat and minimalist "material design" theme. Notifications were also tweaked and could now be seen on the lockscreen – though the ability to view widgets when the handset is locked was removed. The results of Project Volta were included to help improve battery life for devices running Android 5.0, third party apps were again allowed access to data stored on SD cards, and a new smart lock feature allowed you to easily lock and unlock your device in certain situations and locations.Version 5.1 followed on March 9, 2015, giving users the ability to make high definition voice calls between Android 5.1-toting devices, multiple SIM card support, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings including in the quick settings menu and improved device protection. Android 5.0 Lollipop is currently still being rolled out to devices, so if you're waiting to upgrade check out our regularly updated article on when you can expect to get the latest version of Android. Announced: June 2014 | Released: November 2014Android Auto isn't strictly an operating system in its own right, rather it relies on a physical connection to an Android smartphone to project a simplified interface onto a car's internal display.Providing a car-friendly interface which works with steering wheel mounted controls is nice, plus Android Auto allows you to utilize apps such as Maps for navigation and Spotify for seamless music streaming. In terms of functionality, Android Auto hasn't developed at the pace we hoped when it was launched back in 2014, and today the app selection is still rather limited. Android Auto: Google's head unit for cars explained Announced: May 2015 | Released: October 2015Android 6 Marshmallow was officially unveiled in May 2015 at the Google I/O conference, but it became available for a number of devices in October of the same year. The update brought with it a feature called Now on Tap to provide contextual search results using your search history to make them more relevant. It also had a great power management system update for when you're not fiddling with the phone. It allowed for Adoptable Storage for the first time, which means you can use your microSD card but your phone will treat it like internal storage instead.Marshmallow also allowed for better fingerprint recognition tech and USB Type-C connectors for the very time. It now means most Android manufacturers are now adopting the reversible charging technology. Announced: March 2016 | Released: August 2016Android Nougat was released as a beta very early (March 2016) compared to previous software releases, but it officially landed in August 2016.Differences between Nougat and Marshmallow are quite minimal, but the update does bring with it split-screen mode on Android devices for the very first time. That's particularly useful for the Google Pixel C, but also works on phone devices as well for when you want to use two apps side-by-side.Nougat also allows for inline replies to notifications so you won't need to open up your Messenger app to be able to send a quick reply back to your friends. Announced: March 2017 | Released: August 2017The latest version of Android takes its name from another popular snack, the infamous Oreo.Originally announced back in March 2017 as Android O (or Android 8, if you prefer the numerical naming regime) it wasn't until August 21, 2017 when the Android Oreo name was confirmed. On the same date Google pushed out the final build of its new platform to devices signed up to its Beta program, which included the Pixel, Pixel XL and Nexus 6P. Everything you need to know about Android Oreo Announced: March 2018 | Launched: TBCAndroid P is the next major software upgrade for Google's expanding operating system, and its beta is already available on a number of handsets. We're yet to learn the sweet-treat name Google will apply to this Android 9 update, but rumors online are pointing to the likes of Pistachio, Pecan Pie and Pez. Coping with life in three languages
On the day of posting this, the 21st October 2017, it is officially 4 days until I will have been living in South Tyrol for a month. Except it doesn’t feel like a month. It feels like at least three. As the autumn’s rolled in I’ve started to properly settle in, and to quote The Great Gatsby - “life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.”
Initially, moving here was quite challenging for me. I was very lucky that my amazing Mum could come with me for moral support (because, as much as I love you, your linguistic support was a little bit lacking) and that was a huge help. However, I found the whole move abroad so much harder than moving to uni two years ago. I’m the kind of person who needs to be thrown in head first at the deep end, I need to get the whole change over and done with as quickly as possible, like ripping off a plaster. The move to uni was exactly that. My parents dropped me off, I had everything I needed, I met my flatmates the day I arrived, and straight away we were thrown into the chaos which is freshers’ week. I didn’t have time to think about the next thing I needed to do, or even to worry/become homesick, because everything had a) already been sorted for me and b) I was so busy.
Moving here was completely different. We arrived on the 25th, I had the challenge of setting up a bank account on the 26th, I visited my school for the first time on the 27th, I moved into my flat on the 28th and went shopping for the first time on the same day. I didn’t meet my flatmates until they moved in on the following Monday and that was the same day I started work. Everything was so gradual, and for me that was just so much more excruciating.
However, as I said earlier, in four days I will have been here for a month, and while I still have a few hiccups now and then, I’m feeling pretty much settled. I have a gorgeous group of friends who are also working as English Assistants in the region, and most of us get Fridays off, meaning Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are designated adventure days every single week.
I also really love my job. Even though it definitely keeps me on my toes (there are about 400 pupils in the school, all aged between 14 and 19 - only about 10 of them are girls. I don’t need to explain to you what I have to put up with every day). I know for certain that I don’t want to be a teacher in the future, but I’ve already gained so much from working with these young people, whether it’s debating with them about Formula 1, national identity, or Brexit.
I’ve had the opportunity to really tap into the local traditions and culture. Here’re a few google searches for you - I’ve eaten more Knödel than I care to admit, I’ve seen Schuhplattler dancing in real life, I went to an Almabtrieb last weekend and have discovered a new found love for mountain cows. Apparently I enjoy hiking, and my two favourite spots I’ve visited so far were the Peitlerkofel and the Pragser Wildsee (pictured above).
Don’t get me wrong, not all of this has been adventures and defending myself from hormonal teenage boys (much to the amusement of my friends who keep sending me THAT Busted song). I think I spent a good 10 minutes blankly staring at cheese in the supermarket once. All I wanted was something vaguely resembling cheddar, but apparently that’s too much to ask in this part of the world. I could have parmesan, mozzarella, emmental, brie, but nothing that just looked like “normal” cheese. All of it was written in German or Italian, or a random mix of both, and on that day I was just so tired, so hungry, and all I wanted was some bloody cheese. In the end I picked up a bag of something called “pizza cheese” and I’ve been throwing that on my pasta for the last two weeks - no idea what kind of cheese it actually is, mind.
My brain also has little moments where it can’t decide which language it wants to use. Getting on a bus last week, I asked the poor bus driver “geht es a Riscone adesso?” (is it going to Reischach/Riscone now?) - a complete mix of German and Italian. Luckily he spoke both and just nodded at me (whilst probably holding back some laughter), but it didn’t leave me feeling like I was conquering this whole year abroad thing.
I’ve also been on a voyage of discovery about how Britain is viewed by the rest of Europe. As well as thinking we’re absolute idiots with the whole Brexit decision, it’s been interesting to see how they view the other parts of our lives. One of my flatmates told me she used to watch Skins growing up, and thought that that was the most accurate portrayal of British adolescence - I promptly directed her towards the Inbetweeners. Then, while explaining the concept of predrinks to my flatmates, the revolted looks on their faces caused me to have a whole epiphany about why we always score so badly in Eurovision.
I think the strangest thing is I keep having people at home telling me how proud and impressed they feel. Strange, because I don’t feel like I’m doing anything particularly impressive. This year abroad is a compulsory part of my degree, after all, and it’s not like I’m having to use all my languages all the time. In fact, I always speak English with the English department at school, and then my job is to teach English. I attempt to speak German when I’m out and about (easier said than done when everyone speaks dialect here), and I live with three Italian students, so I only speak Italian at home.
Regardless of how other people are viewing this whole adventure, I feel really content in who I am and how I feel for probably the first time since before I started high school. I have no need to prove anything here, to myself or to other people. I don’t feel any pressure to conform or to join in/skip out on what everyone else is doing. I think that’s one of the freedoms that comes with moving somewhere completely new by yourself. You don’t have any influences coming from your past, so you can just focus on who you are in the present. I’m a 20 year old woman who’s partial to a cup of tea, will buy anything if the Cookie Monster’s on it, has the music taste of someone born in the 60s, and would wear red lipstick everyday if she could.
To quote Principle Vernon in The Breakfast Club “you ought to spend a little more time trying to make something of yourself, and a little less time trying to impress people.” I think that’s the best thing I can do out here.
Until next time,
Beth ❤️

Summer Hydrangeas In Bloom: a Funny Twist (+ a Giveaway)
My new corner garden of hydrangeas is blooming! But before I get to lots of photos of pretty flowers, I need to tell you a family story.
When I was a kid, my Dad would plant lots of varieties of flowers. But because he was also a penny pincher (and a little more talented at growing flowers than I), he preferred to grow gardens from seed. There was just one little catch…
He wouldn’t mark, label, or pay any attention to what flowers were growing where. Dad would buy packets of seeds whenever they went on sale and just sort of scatter them in various places around the house. No real color scheme, or height planning, or knowing what grows best with what. It would always be a sort of surprise each spring and summer (much to the chagrin of my mom) to see what would suddenly pop up or completely take over. But many times, the results would also turn out beautifully:
Gorgeous, right? But then again… why am I bringing this up?
Even though Dad was clearly pretty good at this little gamble, I have spent years struggling to figure out how best to grow things in my own gardens. I like to think that I’ve gotten far more confident about knowing what will thrive these days, but if I’m spending cold hard cash on a flower or shrub, I tend to be more of a planner (however, I’m still my father’s daughter at being a “Frugal Fogle” as I’ve proven with some of my plant hacks before).
So you can imagine my surprise when I spent some time and effort planting my new hydrangea garden in the corner of the back yard… mulching… putting down fertilizer… and watching things suddenly start to bloom… to realize that some of my plants were blooming… a little different than how I expected.
When I originally looked at the tag and bought my new BloomStruck® hydrangeas, I expected to see them coming in like the way I’ve known my other Endless Summer hydrangeas to come in: big, “mophead” clusters of little flowers varying in color from pink to deep blue. And since these were specifically supposed to be the BloomStruck® variety and I’ve seen lots of pictures on the Endless Summer® website gallery, I knew that the color would probably be even more vibrant. But as I inspected some of the shrubs closer, I realized that some of my plants were showing more delicate centers that looked like they weren’t blooming all the way. Hmm…
As you guys have seen from the disclosure I’m required to post (FTC rules being what they are and such), my new corner garden is unique in that it is sponsored this year directly by the Endless Summer® folks. I have planted their Original variety in my yard over the years and fell in love with how easy and pretty their hydrangeas are to care for, especially since they bloom and re-bloom from spring to fall. So, it was a no-brainer when they reached out to partner for my new corner garden idea. Just as the flowers started to bloom and I published the first blog post about my plans, one of their reps contacted me and solved my curious little flower puzzle: some of these flowers were not, in fact, the BloomStruck® variety!
I went back to looking at all of the signature blue pots that Endless Summer hydrangeas come in and all of their labels. Was I nuts? Had I picked up the wrong plant? I had only just started cleaning up the garden so I still had all the labels the pots came with. What the heck???
A little back and forth with the ES folks and we got down to the bottom of it: when the local nursery put out the plants, they’re also the ones who put the pricing labels on the tags (I had Photoshopped the price out of this original image I took at the nursery, but pictured is the label I’m talking about). Somehow, when they did that, they must have taken off the tags and then stuck them back in each pot, mixing up the pots and labels and sold a different variety — called Twist n Shout, which is a “lacecap” bloom style — as BloomStruck!
As you can imagine, I was kind of embarrassed over the whole thing — when you promote something for a brand, you not only want to be accurate for the sake of professionalism, but I also don’t want to accidentally tell you guys something wrong either. Not to mention pretty irritated at the nursery for the mixup, since it meant I’d have to dig up the ones that were wrong and replant (I could have kept them, but it’s merely a preference thing that I specifically wanted all the plants to match). Luckily the nursery (like most these days) have a refund policy so it was easy to return… and then I went and picked up BloomStruck pots at a competitor location.
But just to double check (since now I was super concerned about how little I knew of identifying these plants beyond what the blooms look like, ha!), I also learned that the BloomStruck variety can be identified by their reddish stems (the Original has a similar bloom look but green stems):
Anyway, the point of this story is just that unbeknownst to me, I wound up carrying on my dad’s tradition after all. So instead of making me fuming angry at the nitwits at the local nursery for almost making my garden look like it was having an identity crisis (well, ONLY angry at them, that is), I can look back and once again have a crazy story about this house to tell my friends, and a nice little funny family memory thrown in every time I go back out there to see how my “new” new hydrangeas are doing (as if I need more funny stories, right? This house, I swear!).
Where were we? Oh right: Hydrangea Care and Maintenance!
Color and fertilizing: Like I mentioned, one of the reasons why I agreed to work with the Endless Summer folks in the first place was that I already knew how easy their plants were to care for; so even though I had to sort of “catch up” the new plants to the ones I planted back in the spring, they all started growing in nicely once I added some slow-release fertilizer (I prefer Osmocote as a good catch-all fertilizer, but if you specifically want to change the color of the blooms, you can also use a pink or blue fertilizer that changes the pH balance in the soil for the color you want).
Watering: To keep things coming in nice and healthy, I took the swapping out of the wrong plants as an opportunity to add a soaker hose, but wound up turning it off about halfway through the summer since we’ve had a little extra rain over the last couple of months and this garden area is close to the roof downspout (too much water can lead to producing less flowers, and the hard Georgia clay already holds more water than sandy soil).
(FYI — for more care tips and reminders, you can text ENDLESSSUMMER to 73095 for timely care tips (this is not for marketing purposes… it just provides care instructions throughout the season). Furthermore, Endless Summer® Hydrangea has teamed up with Pandora to create a playlist. To find it, open Pandora and search for Artists Rebloomed. Happy Gardening!)
Sun and wind: My number 1 tip about hydrangeas is to pick a place where it is protected by the wind, which is why I plant them near fences and under the shade of larger trees; I’ve found that when they’re protected enough from the sun and wind, they can grow like crazy and pop up blooms before I know it. The southern heat can lead the leaves to wilt in midday, but they perk up in the evening again once the temps cool down a little (usually by the time Charlie is due for her evening walks).
Hydrangeas in Full Bloom
Once things were corrected, they started blooming and showing off their beautiful range of summer colors. I’m going to let them get better established before I do cuttings, but I’m looking forward to seeing how they look in the fall too. I just love how deeply purple they have been coming in with all of the recent rain we’ve had in Georgia:
The lighter hues aren’t half bad, either :

So, enough of that crazy tale… how about another awesome outdoor giveaway?? Here are all the details!
