Summary: What would it be like if Erik was your boss and you were both stuck in a really tough spot.
This is for @marvelmaree and her birthday challenge.
Tumblr media
Another email buzzed into your phone, your fingers anxiously twitched around it desperate to answer and solve all your problems. But it was never that easy.
You were a headstrong and independent woman who always strives to take care of yourself without the help of anyone. You didn’t need anyone to take care of you, but the situation you were in right now made you consider otherwise.
You made phone call after phone call and nothing was working and soon you would be flat on your butt with nothing but your dream job to keep you up. But it really didn’t matter because in the end you would get everything figured out and back on your feet.
For right now you’d focus on your boss and helping him shop for his upcoming business trip. You were supposed to meet your boss Erik Stevens in the watch shop about ten minutes ago but you were a bit weighed down with all the bags you were carrying.
You stopped to rest on a bench, you had a few work calls to make anyway. A loud sigh of relief escaping your lips when the weight of the back. You were just catching your breath when you heard a chuckle come from the stand in front of you.
“It’s okay to ask for help. There’s no reason a young lady like you should be carrying all those bags by herself.” The older man smiled kindly at you. You smiled back and quickly got up from the bench, you didn’t have to explain yourself to anyone. Erik offered to join you to pick up his online orders, but you assured him that his time was better spent on the conference call that he wrapped up ten minutes ago, and that the bags wouldn’t be too much for you to handle on your own.
Eventually you make it to the watch shop, and made eye contact with Erik as you entered the shop loudly with all the bags in your petite hands. Erik’s eyes roll over your form, his jaw clenching as he sees the amount of bags in your possession. He quickly marches over to you and snatches the bags from you. Picking them up effortlessly he bends down to whisper in your ear.
“Next time, we go together.” His anger is thick and understandable, you quickly look away from his eyes and nod. Silence seems like the best response at the moment.
You stand behind Erik to watch him pick out another sharp looking watch. It was his obsession, he loved his watches. Sometimes he would send you to go get them cleaned or fixed but most times he’d rather go himself, regardless of how busy he was.
As his personal assistant he demanded you tag along, especially when times were busy like today. Most of the time he liked having you around for the company, but also because he says having a beautiful girl like you on his arm warded off the desperate attempts some women took to shoot their shot.
Erik was a well known CEO of a huge engineering firm, frequently recognized by business magazines and publications, he easily became one of the western world's most sought after bachelors. So it’s no surprise that women recognized him sometimes and approached him when they felt necessary.
Erik held conferences, did interviews, and held charity galas all the time, working for him paid well, and he treated his employees with respect and cherished anyone who worked hard with him. You admired him and truly enjoyed working for such a determined man.
Erik finished up with the clerk and got his items wrapped up. While waiting he watched how you nervously kept checking your phone. The nervous tick of biting your bottom lip was a dead giveaway. After 5 years of working together Erik knew you well. He could tell when things were bothering you, he trusted you to tell him the truth about his company and a lot of the decisions he made. So any look of unease had him on alert as it usually signaled something that could be a problem with the company.
Annnnd he had a bit of a crush on you, he knew you had a crush on him too, but it was quietly determined that the two of you would not pursue it. The mutual attraction was obvious between the two of you, but you worked hard to bury it deep. Mainly because you worked so well together.
Erik grabbed your chin gently, his thumb forcing you to release your bottom lip. You looked up at him with your eyes wide as saucers. The grip on your phone tightened when you noticed Erik lick his lips staring down at you.
“What’s the matter?” Erik nodded towards your phone. You were a bit shook and quickly pulled yourself out of his grip and closed your phone pocketing it and smiling up at your boss.
“Nothing! Are we ready to go?”
Erik’s eyes squinted at you and nodded as he held up his packaged watches. You lead the way out of the store and towards his car. He put the bags in the trunk and you quickly hopped into the passenger seat after he opened it for you. You quietly murmured thank you and pulled out your work phone to see what was next on the agenda for the day.
Erik has a huge business deal coming up that required his travel to Singapore. Normally you’d travel with him for deals as big as this one, but this one was so important that he would be gone for about 2-3 weeks, maybe having to be back and forth a bit longer if everything went really well… or really bad. This trip required a lot of preparation on his part and yours and he left in two days, so it’s imperative that he complete his travel shopping today.
Erik climbs into the driver's seat and pulls off from the curb.
“Okay you have an appointment at Grisham Mall for those suits, then-“ Erik cut you off and held his hand out for your phone.
“Give it to me.” His voice is deep and rough. You go to hand him your work phone confusion etched on your face. “The other one.” His eyes cut towards you. “I’m not playing with you.” Your brain shorts. Stuck between a rock and a hard place, you were used to Erik’s moods and for the most part they turned you on more than anything.
“Why! It’s not that deep Erik.”
“Then give me the fucking phone so I can see what’s got you so nervous. Or you could just tell me.” Erik’s face was serious, he could always tell when you were trying to keep things from him.
You sigh and hand over your phone with the email detailing your eviction from your apartment.
Erik’s face got tighter as he read the email, his jaw clenching and unclenching.
“How did this happen?” He glanced briefly at you.
“I think someone stole my identity.” The words slip from your mouth, you’d been trying to handle it on your own this entire time, but things were worse than you perceived them to be.
He pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed deeply, his frustration clear. "How long has this been going on?"
"About a month." You shrunk a bit under his intense gaze, embarrassed to give him the answer.
"You've been dealing with this for a whole month and didnt say anything?" Erik knew you were headstrong and independent, he just never knew how deep that went.
You shrugged, "I'm handling it. I just need to talk to my leasing office and ask for an extension on rent. It's nothing to worry about."
Erik chuckled, mocking you under his breath. “Nothing to worry about” Erik grabbed your wrist, "The hell it is." He reaches into his back pocket and pulls out a black Amex card.
"Here, pay your rent and everything else with this. I'll get Marcus on the phone and have him figure out who stole your identity." He flicked the card at you like it was a $10 Walmart gift card. You instinctively tried to push it back to him, but thought better of it when you saw the glare on his face. It's best to pick your battles with Erik and now was definitely not a good time to argue with him. He hates when you hide big things from him.
You grabbed the card and gave him a small but genuine smile, the relief and frustration fought for domination on your face. "Thank you so much Erik. I promise I'll pay you back."
"Don't worry about it. It's nothing."
You shook your head vigorously. "Bullshit! I'm paying you back one way or another."
Erik rolled his eyes, but he didn't argue. You made your way to the mall. Erik was on the phone giving Marcus a rundown of your situation so he could get started. The two of you made it to the next mall to pick up the suits. Shortly after he hung up, his phone rang again.
He greeted them with a simple "Erik." You couldn't help but eavesdrop, hey some could say it was part of your job, especially when Erik's face quickly morphed into shock.
"How the hell am I supposed to do that?" He said.
There was a bit more conversation. “Why the hell did no one see this being an issue earlier. I specifically asked what were their core values!!” Erik's face grew more frustrated as it continued before he said a quick goodbye and hung up.
"Is everything ok? Did something go wrong with the Singapore trip?" You waited a few moments before asking.
"That was Jeff. He was able to do the values and moral eval on the owners and it's about what we expected, except for the part where they truly believe a businessman needs to be married and involve his wife in the processes of the business. They like the idea of a family guy basically.” Erik rolled his eyes. “Some bullshit about how there might be another competitor with values that line up more. Jeff's suggesting I need to find a fake wife for the trip to stay in their good graces. How the fuck am I going to find someone suitable in 2 weeks?" Erik pinched the bridge of his nose, his nostrils flaring in frustration.
You immediately started racking your brain sifting through all of the women you knew who could maybe handle the job. It had to be someone who knew their way around a company, even better if they had experience in the types of mergers Erik did. They had to get along with Erik- which was pretty difficult once he got to know them- enough to convince the owners that it was a real marriage. They had to be free during the 2-3 week period he would be in Singapore, and be able to do all of this under short notice. Not to mention all of the other factors like facilitating business meetings, building rapport, etc.
Erik suddenly stopped walking, and you were so deep in thought that you ran into his broad back, almost knocking yourself to the floor.
He quickly wrapped an arm around your waist to steady you, pulling you close to his side. He smelled so damn good!
"That's it! I don't know why I didn't see it sooner!" Erik smiled brightly.
"See what?" You tilted your head in confusion. He smiled softly and moved a few pieces of your hair back into place. "You can be my wife. You know everything about the company, we've been working together for years so we won't have to worry about that. It's perfect!"
The thought of it alone brought a euphoria you've never felt before, which was terrifying. There's no way you'd be able to handle pretending to be Erik's wife! You barely held it together working alongside him these past few years.
You shook your head, "Erik, I'm sure there's someone else who would work better for this. Plus someone is going to have to handle your day to day operations while you're gone."
He smirked, "I'll have Gina take that over, no problem. Besides, weren't you just talking about how you were going to pay me back? Do this for me and I'll consider us even. Think of it as overtime."
Damn, he had a point. You would just have to guard yourself during this trip then. You can't allow yourself to get caught up. He was right though. He's done so much for you, it'd be nice to be able to help him out for once.
You looked into his eyes and nodded.
"Ok. I'll be your wife."

A Day with the Udakus'
A/N: I know we’re all hurting, but I just wanted to maybe try to lighten the mood. I don’t really expect most of you to read this, or anyone, but for me, writing was therapeutic. I love you all, and we will get through this.
Words: 3K
Warnings: NO ANGST. Just shenanigans
Summary: Reader is granted an exclusive interview with the Udaku family, but Y/N quickly realizes there’s more to the Wakandans than she could have ever realized.
Tumblr media
You clicked the pen three times.
Once to ensure that it was unsheathed, another to close it again, and the last time for purposeful use. It was a habit you’d developed way back in middle school. You were always the irksome “pen clicker” who elevated everyone’s anxiety while taking an exam. However, for you, it was calming.
And to a certain extent, it still was.
You turned your head to the window only to remember that the coverings were unmovable, an intentional move, you were sure, to keep you from seeing too much.
You didn’t take it personal, though. You were just thankful to have this assignment, an assignment that could make or break your career depending on the outcome.
No one, in the history of your country, had been welcomed to Wakanda. The borders were solid as cement. No outsiders.
Yet, here you were, and to spend a day interviewing the royal family.
You began your pen clicking process all over again.
You meant to document how long the flight was, but nerves ate at your ability to keep time. If you had to guess, though, at least twelve hours transpired prior to your arrival.
And what an arrival it was. As soon as you stepped off the plane, you were immediately in awe. Flying machines similar to cars but much smaller than 747’s flew over, the monolithic buildings seemed to eclipse the clouds themselves, and the design of everything, the specific details, it all seemed too ethereal to be real.
But it was.
This was Wakanda.
You frowned.
Where in the hell did everyone get the notion that this country was among the poorest in Africa? From what she could see, it was easily the richest in the continent.
If not the world.
“You’re here!”
You directed your attention to a beaming girl who made a beeline in your direction. She looked no older than 18 and wore her hair in small box braids. Her attire was unlike any you’d seen. You made a mental note of that, as well as the exterior of the nation.
“Welcome….” You supplied your name, allowing her to include it in her greeting before she started bobbing on the back of her heels. “I’m so excited to meet you. I’ve never actually done a real interview before.”
You smiled and pushed a passion twist behind your ear. During one of your naps on the plane, your bun must have loosened. “It’s an honor to be here…..”
Her eyes widened. “Shuri. You can call me Shuri.”
Your eyes too widened. Shuri? “As in Princess Shuri?”
The teenager scowled. “Please, Shuri will do fine.” She moved closer and placed a hand on your shoulder. “Come. I will show you to your room.”
All you could do was awkwardly nod. This was the freaking princess of this majestic place, and she was enthusiastic as a kid at Disney. For you.
Your own parents weren’t even that excited when you told them you’d landed your dream job.
As Shuri walked you from the hangar bay to the inside of the palace, you took note of everything around you, the people you passed. The strong women who wore red, the men who wore shades of blue, black, and gray. They all exuded strength and power. Shuri explained the women were called the Dora Milaje, Wakanda’s all-female sect of the military. However, their first and foremost priority? Protecting the king and royal family.
The uniforms, the staffs, the power. Hell, you were damn near about to start spazzing.
“Ahh, Erik!” Shuri stopped and gestured to a couple walking in your direction. “Come meet-”
“Goddamnit, woman, I told you I wasn’t looking at her!”
“Don’t call me a woman!”
“You a female, ain’t you? You got a pussy, don’t you?”
“You make me sick!”
“Naw, I make you gag, remember?” The man with short locs cursed as the woman he was arguing with grabbed at his hair, giving a good yank. “The fuck!”
“I want you to admit you were looking at her!”
“She was our waitress! Of course, I was looking at her! You asked me to order, damnit!”
“Nigga, don’t play with me, you know what I mean!” The woman paused. “You think she’s prettier than me, don’t you?”
“I don’t even know the bitch!”
“Don’t use that word around me!”
“Fuck this. You are really crazy, you know that?”
She suddenly started to whimper as the man’s shoulders dropped.
“You don’t love me anymore.”
As the woman began to sob, loudly and theatrically, he placed his arms around her and pulled her into his chest.
All you could do was stare in awe at the scene before you.
Shuri must have noticed your surprise. She waved her hand. “That is my cousin, Erik, and his wife--”
“Wife?” You interrupted, looking back and forth between the teen and the couple. “They’re married?”
Shuri nodded happily. “They’ve been together since primary.”
And they fight like that?
You also made a mental note to discuss the interesting dynamic of marriages in Wakanda in your writeup.
“You said it wasn’t big!” Erik’s wife was still crying and now punching on his chest as she angrily jabbed her finger in his shoulder. “You—you liar!”
Before Shuri could introduce you, the upset woman sauntered past and between you two, knocking you to the side.
“It isn’t, baby! You just got a lot on your mind!” Erik called after her, hands up in defeat. “A lot of thoughts!” He sighed and jogged toward you two, grabbing Shuri by the back of her neck and kissing her forehead. “I’ll catch you later, cuz.” He then looked your way, and you prayed he could not see the nervous swallow that coursed down your throat. He was so tall and handsome.
And married.
“Stranger.”
You opened your mouth, but he was already gone.
You sighed. It was better than being ignored.
Shuri shook her head and motioned for you two to continue walking. “We’ll try again at dinner. Come, let me finish showing you around.”
All you could do was quietly agree as she pointed things out, things you probably should have paid more attention to, but you were stuck not only on the volatile argument but just the wonders that surrounded you.
You expected poverty, dire conditions, solemn conversations. You were experiencing the complete opposite.
“Now this is—”
“Die, traitor! Die!”
“Wakanda Forever!”
“Surrender!”
“Never!
Multiple voices filled your ears as you turned the corner of a hallway, only to be knocked flat on your ass seconds later, your purse emptying, the recently purchased bottle of hand sanitizer rolling away from your body.
“Asha!” Shuri shouted with her arms crossed. “You come back here and apologize!”
The little girl with white locs that cascaded down her back, turned her head to look back. You caught her bright blue eyes and gasped. You’d never seen such a beautiful contrast of color. Her milky chocolate complexion, those ocean eyes, the icy white hair. She was easily the most beautiful little girl you’d ever seen.
“I cannot, Aunt Shuri! I must escape!”
“Asha...” Shuri’s voice transitioned into one of unequivocal sternness as she helped you stand up. “Now.”
Asha groaned and stomped over, pouting, she muttered a quiet sorry.
“You know better—”
“Now, Azari and N’Yami are going to win without me.”
“Another game of capture, eh?” Shuri chuckled and pulled the child into her, kissing the top of her head. “Y/N, this is my niece, Princess Asha.”
This time, you were able to watch your facial expressions. The only thing you did was curtsy. “Your highness.”
When you looked up, you saw Asha and Shuri sharing confused expressions. You faltered with your next statement, only for Asha to interrupt.
“What are you doing?”
“We don’t do that here,” Shuri explained with a small smile.
You were thankful for your deep complexion. Had you been caucasian, your embarrassment would have given you away.
You awkwardly looked down. “I’m sorry.”
“You’re weird.”
“Asha!”
Shuri pinched her arm. The little princess scowled and grabbed the assaulted area. “Sorry.”
“Come, little one! We are off for another round.”
A new voice announced as three heads turned to the end of the hall where a group of kids stood amongst a giant. Wide, tall, and with muscles wrapping around bands of muscles, you swallowed again. You didn’t have to be close to see how attractive this man was.
Was every man in Wakanda sinfully handsome?
“Coming, Uncle M’Baku!” She looked up. “May I go now, Aunt Shuri?”
Shuri playfully sighed and motioned toward the other kids. “Go on.”
Without another word, she sprinted off, joining her friends before the group disappeared.
“Everyone is so busy today,” Shuri spoke with disappointment and crossed arms. “I planned to introduce you to the rest of the kids.”
You couldn’t help your interruption. “How many kids does the king have?”
“Four. Asha, N’Yami, and Azari, and Azzuri. Asha is the oldest. The other three are triplets.”
“My God,” you mumbled, then remembering that there were certainly more than three kids at the end of the hall. “And the others?”
“M’Baku’s kids. He was the tall man with them. He’s the leader of the Jabari tribe here. He and his wife Hawla have twelve children.”
Every segment of that sentence sent your eyebrows up in surprise. Yet, you retained more questions, especially after Shuri further explained how the tribes worked. She also mentioned introducing you to the leaders of this Jabari tribe.
It was a lot considering you hadn’t even been there for a whole hour.
“Come on, brother and sister should be in the training room.”
It wasn’t hard to figure that by brother, she meant King T’Challa, and by sister, Queen Ororo.
Where was that damn pen when you needed it?
“Are you sure? I wouldn’t want to disturb them.”
“Nonsense, they’re probably just training.”
“Training?”
“You’ll see.”
Shuri’s coyness didn’t help your nerves. While she seemed to enjoy the madness of the palace, it spiked your discomfort. You’d mentally prepared for almost everything except the madhouse that you were being introduced to.
“Do not let brother intimidate you. His bark is much worse than his bite.”
You found that very hard to believe. King T’Challa, also the Black Panther, had single handedly defeated every member of the Avengers on their own turf, yet you were supposed to believe that he was amenable?
“Really?”
Shuri snorted. “No, he’s an ass.” You gulped. “Sister has helped calm him down, though, that much, I can’t deny.”
You said nothing else as she brought you to double doors that opened without her moving. That’d happened more than a couple of times, yet you could never detect any sign of motion sensors. Another note was made.
You walked into a room where a wall of windows exposed a large area that resembled a training type arena.
“There they—”
“My wife controls the weather itself, while I am just a man.” You weren’t even paying attention to the words coming out of his mouth. All you could focus on was him. He was in the suit, muscles stretching against the fabric. He walked while he spoke, his gait that of a predator, a hunter, a king. “A man who has studied every fighting style in the world.”
Across the room, she rose into the sky, floating high above the ground. The winds whipped around her, her arms raised. Her eyes were completely white, her matching white hair floating from the mass of winds.
Storm
“If I have learned anything, it is that every punch can be blocked.” Seconds later, the queen flew toward him, aiming for a punch, but falling short as he easily moved to the side. “Every weapon can be countered.”
You saw his lips move, but whatever was said was not audible.
His next statement, however, was not.
“Right this moment, above our head, an unmanned drone sprays the cloud with a super-absorbent powdered polymer.” As he spoke, large bolts of lightning were directed toward him. Some hit his suit, but he dodged most of them. “Out on the Indian Ocean, a swarm of nanotech phytoplankton eat the heat from a burgeoning storm.” You noticed how the winds started to lessen in intensity and depth. “Microwaves shoot down from Wakandan satellites, reducing an onrushing snowstorm to a slightly cooling breeze.”
Storm’s brows furrowed as she looked at her hands. The white hues of her eyes were returning to normal, revealing the same blue eyes you’d seen in Asha.
“The winds? What just—”
“I’m sorry, my love,” King T’Challa interrupted. She looked over at him, lowering to the ground. “I just blocked your punch.”
“You….” Her jaw drop and speech faltered. “All this time, you’ve had a plan for how to defeat your own wife.”
The king spoke in a bored voice. “Please remember, my dear,  I did not start this fight.”
“Neither will you finish it, my dear!”
Before he could reply, Storm struck him, sending him flying and landing on his ass. What started as a battle of abilities was now reduced to hand to hand combat. You watched in awe as these two incomparably powerful human beings battled each other. The fact that they were husband and wife, king and queen, mattered not even in the slightest.
They looked like two gladiators dueling to the death.
“Do—do they do this often?”
“Train?” Shuri looked at you. “All the time.”
You almost fainted. “This is how they train?”
“You bastard!” The strength of the thunder that emanated from Storm caused the entire building to shake while the lightning causes the lights to flicker.
Shuri sighed and shook her head. “I suppose you’ll have to meet them at dinner.”
“Dinner?” You coughed. “I couldn’t—I don’t want to impose.”
“Nonsense. We’d love to have you.” Shuri’s smile widened. “Then you can meet the whole family at once.”
You suddenly wondered how hard it was to get a flight out of Wakanda.
xXx
The room you’d been given, so beautiful and magnanimous, was now a disaster. Clothes were thrown about while shoes clustered the floor. Underneath your makeup, your face was red and patchy from the two looks you tried, hated, and scrubbed before settling on a simple smoky eye and blood red lip.
Every outfit you tried on seemed either too fancy or too casual. Then again, you’d never had dinner with a royal family, let alone a family of heroes.
You so badly wanted to find a way out of it, but Shuri, the seemingly only normal member of this family was hellbent on introducing you. You also had to factor in that you’d have to communicate with them at some point. You were there to interview them for god’s sake.
Two guards knocked on your door to escort you to the dining hall. You were a bit saddened at the fact that Shuri hadn’t come to bring you. You felt comfortable with her.
Imagine that. I need a teenager to walk me. What is this place doing to me?
As you walked down the hall, you sent up a quick prayer. The voices that were initially faint grew into loud and lucid. The double doors opened and revealed you to the room full of royals. You stood still as a statue.
“Y/N!” Shuri jumped from the table and jogged over. This dining room envied that of one on a college campus. “Welcome.” She smiled while standing in front of you. “You look wonderful.”
“Thank you.” You wanted to compliment her, but you could only focus on the pairs of eyes on you. Almost everyone was staring, but that wasn’t even what stood out the most. It was how they were looking.
Welcoming
“Y/N.” The queen was the first to speak, her smile wide and warm. You’d never seen such a beautiful person. Her white dress had a long split up the right side of her leg and the neckline dipped low, revealing her full breast. It was almost strange to think this was the same woman who viciously attacked her husband just a few hours ago. “It is a pleasure to have you here. We welcome you.”
“T-t-t-thank you, your highness.”
“Man, if you don’t call her RoRo,” Erik interjected. His wife, who stood next to him, slapped his arm.
“Ignore him. I’m Nareema.”
“My woman.” Erik’s hand sunk down to her ass, where he gave a soft slap.
“We welcome you to our home.” The tallest man stood, but not before helping the woman who sat next to him up. She rubbed her round stomach. “I am M’Baku, and this is my wife, Hawla.”
Ororo’s beauty was undeniable, but so were Hawla and Nareema. And the men…..
I wonder if everyone in Wakanda is as—
“Y/N.”
When he spoke, heads turned and ears tuned. He just commanded authority. Hands together and behind his back, he stared directly at you. His gaze nor tone of voice was as friendly as his wife, but you didn’t expect him to be welcoming you with open arms. You could only imagine what it took to even allow him to be willing to have you in his home. Around his family.
“I hope you are finding your visit well.”
“I-I am.” She quickly answered and then added, “your highness.”
“Oh please, don’t call him that,” Shuri corrected. “Brother’s ego is already big enough.”
“That is true,” Ororo chimed with a sly smile, looking at him out the corner of her eye. King T’Challa moved his hand to his wife’s and gave a soft squeeze and wink.
You retained a smile as they welcomed you to the table. When you asked about the kids, a chorus of groans erupted.
“They eat by themselves. We need our time away from those demons.”
“My children are warriors.”
“Your kids are bad as hell.”
“Erik!”
“I don’t know you talking, sis. Your kids even badder.”
“Mind your tongue, N’Jadaka.”
“Spark Jr. Sparky the Third, Sparky Spark, and Sparkle are all savages. I said what I said.” You brought the napkin to your mouth to hide your amused smile. “How the hell all four of they asses end up inheriting both ya’ll’s powers anyway? What kind of fucking ya’ll be doing?”
“Erik, must you be so vulgar?” Hawla complained.
“Aye, the little man speaks truth. How rare it is for all four to inherit such power.”
“Who the hell you calling little man, Mark Henry? This little man will beat the ruff ruff’s right out ya atomic dog ass.”
“N’Jadaka, please!”
“I told you he needed a muzzle.”
“That’s funny, cause I told cuz not to marry you.”
“Speak that way to my wife, again, N’Jadaka, and we shall see how well you can speak with your larynx severed.”
The calm delivery of King T’Challa’s threat sent chills down your spine, but they didn’t last.
“You wasn’t saying that when you was chillin at my crib last week talking about you were sick of her mood swings.”
If looks could kill, Erik and T’Challa would be on life support.
“You said what?”
“What was Ororo doing at our house? Where was I? Why did you not tell me this?”
“We will discuss this later.”
“No, we will discuss it now.”
“I do not answer to you, Ororo.”
“Oh, really?” She tilted her head to the side, staring at him, T’Challa kept their stare for a few more seconds when he grabbed at his throat. His fist banged on the table, causing the dishes to tremble from the intensity. You gasped. She was choking him.
“Here we go again,” Shuri mumbled, stabbing her fork into the plate. You looked around, Erik and Nareema were still arguing. She looked ready to cry. M’Baku and Hawla spoke quietly amongst themselves. You were flabbergasted. No one seemed the least bit concerned that the queen was trying to kill the king.
Again
“Damnit, Ororo!” King T’Challa finally spoke after quick, hearty coughs. “Damn you!”
“Would you like to tell me again you don’t answer to me?”
“This is what I am referring to. You are always so quick to anger!”
“Perhaps if my husband would not do things to make me angry, I would not be angry. Did that ever cross your miserable, self-centered brain?”
“You do hate me! I knew it!”
“Nareema, I don’t hate you!”
“Could we get another round of bread, please?”
“So, what is your family like?” Shuri suddenly asked in a bored tone. All you could do was look around. So much arguing, so many strange interactions, yet you were the only one who seemed bothered. And perhaps that was for a reason.
A good reason.
This was their norm, and despite how dysfunctional it appeared on the outside, it worked for them. And that was more than enough for you.
You’d just have to accept that this was just another day with the Udakus.’

Trust To Be Gained
A few hours later, as August was sleeping soundly in bed, Grace decided to give her family a call.
She hadn't spoken to her sister in two years, and she hadn't been to see her mom in a few months. She usually went and visited when August was on a mission, but she didn't go on his last one, at his request, which she understood why now. If she hadn't been home when she found out about Kashmir, she wouldn't have returned to Washington, which he wanted her to do.
Her hands shook as she pressed the call button, and held the phone up to her ear. It rang a few times, before she heard her mom's voice.
"Gracie! Where've you been sweetie? You haven't answered us in a while," Her mom began.
Grace took a deep breath, but explained. "I was going to call yesterday morning, but I forgot. August is alive, and here with me." She began, before her mother cut her off.
"Alive? How? He took a metal hook to the head!" Her mom exclaimed.
"He was hit with the hook, but it bounced off his face. He has a big burn on the side of his face, but he's recovering. He's starting to look a lot better," She explained. Her eyes fell on 'What We Owe To Each Other,' which was on the kitchen counter, where August had left it. "He's also going to be working to be a better person, and gain everyones trust back, including our family's."
"Do you trust him?" Her mom asked in a serious tone.
Grace sighed, and felt her eyes watering. "It's getting there. He seems sorry, and has been very emotional the past few days, and has done everything I've asked him to. I mean, I love him, and I want to help him," She said, a stray tear falling down her right cheek.
Her mother heard the emotion in her youngest daughter's voice and reassured her. "That's exactly what he needs right now. Your love. We both know that he loves you with his whole being, and will do anything to make sure you are safe and happy. He's going to be okay, you know that right?"
"Yeah, I do." She whispered, more tears spilling.
"Why don't you two come and stay for a few days. Julia is here, and she misses you so so much. I'd like to see you again too, baby. I think it would be good for the two of you, to get out of Washington," Her mom mentioned.
"I agree. I'll let Sloane know and we'll head out tomorrow," She said.
"Okay, good. I can't wait to see you," Her mom whispered, emotion present in her voice as well.
"Me too. Don't tell Julia though, I want to surprise her." She said, and she heard her mom giggle.
"Okay, love. Have a good night, and let me know when you're on your way, okay? I love you."
"I love you too, goodnight," She said, before hanging up.
She made a quick call to Sloane who agreed that family time would be best right now, and gave her permission to take him out of state.
She placed her phone and made the journey back up the stairs. Just as she made it to the top, the door to the bedroom opened, and a black wall came at her face. She quickly realized it was August reaching out to hug her.
"Oh, thank god," He whispered in her ear. She felt a small tear land on her shoulder.
"What's wrong, Auggie baby?" She said in a gentle tone.
"I woke up and you weren't in the bed or the bathroom and I got so scared. I thought you left or someone took you," He said, as his breathing slowed the longer he held her.
"No ones going to take me away from you baby, and I won't leave." she whispered in his ear, running her right hand up and down his spine, her other hand coming to rest on his hip. He nodded, and allowed Grace to lead him back to the bed. He laid down on his back, and pulled Grace into him, so her upper body was on his. He pressed a kiss to her forehead, and smiled at her when she looked him in the eyes.
Grace reached her hand out and placed it on his jaw, rubbing her thumb along his stubble that disappeared into his scar.
"We're going to Virginia tomorrow," She whispered.
"Why? To see your mom?" He asked.
Grace nodded. "She misses me, and she misses you. She's not mad at you. Julia will be there too and she's not mad either." She reassured him.
August nodded, and pressed a kiss into her palm, before he wrapped his arms tighter around Grace, and they drifted off asleep.
The next morning, the couple woke up early, and packed for their trip. Grace packed her stuff, as well as Kal's, while August packed his, and emptied to fridge of anything that would go bad over the trip, and took it to the road. They both made coffee, and were on the road by 6:30 am, and headed to Virginia.
The trip was going to take 3 hours, and August wasn't planning on talking too much, instead allowing Grace to sleep. But as soon as they were out of their neighbourhood, Grace connected her phone to the car's speaker and began to play Babylon by 5SOS, which was one of August's favourite songs.
They continued to sing along to some of their favourite songs, and eventually put on a podcast when they hit the highway, so August didn't get too distracted. Grace eventually drifted off, as did Kal, who was spread out on the backseat of August's Tesla.
August continued to drive, until he felt his stomach rumble, and his car told him it needed a charge. He saw a sign for a charging station in a Cracker Barrel parking lot, and headed towards the exit. Grace was awoken by the sudden change in direction.
"Where are we going?" She asked, groggily. August smiled, and placed his right hand on her left thigh, his thumb rubbing the soft skin through her sweatpants.
"The car needs a charge, and I'm hungry, as I'm sure you are. The charging station is in a Cracker Barrel parking lot, so I'm thinking we go there for lunch." Grace smiled at him.
"I agree, wholeheartedly. I want some friggen biscuits." She said, which made August chuckle.
They pulled off into the parking lot, and got out. August turned the car into Pet Mode, and plugged it in. Kal was still sleeping, so he didn't even notice his mom and dad leaving.
They were quickly seated in the dining area, and began to look over the breakfast menu.
"I know what you'll be having, Auggie," She said. "Old Timer's Breakfast," Grace continued, and she descended into a fit of giggles. However, she didn't notice August throwing a balled up napkin at her head, which hit her square in the forehead.
"Hey! Rude!" She exclaimed with a huge smile on her face, while August had his head on the table, his shoulders shaking with laughter.
He lifted his head, which has a smile and a twinkle in his blue orbs. "You shouldn't have called me old then, love."
Grace shook her head, and continued to look at the menu.
Grace decided to have French Toast and biscuits on the side, while August decided to go with his wife's suggestion, The Old Timers Breakfast, with an extra order of biscuits, knowing Grace would probably eat his as well. Man, that girl loved biscuits.
Their food came shortly after, as they were one of the four couples in the restaurant. They didn't speak that much while they ate, August only looking up to glance at his wife, who was dancing slightly while she was eating, a tell tale sign that she was thoroughly enjoying her food.
They finished up, and headed back to the car, which was fully charged. Kal, who had not awoken the entire time, was startled when August opened the door, climbed in, and pressed the unlock button for Grace. Kal barked at his mom until she gave him some ear scratches, at which point he decided to crawl into the front seat to sit at Grace's feet.
"Kal! What are you doing buddy?" August said, leaning his head to the side to avoid contact with the dogs rear end. Grace, however, was laughing and helped the large Akita to where he wanted to go.
Once Kal was settled, August pulled the car out of the parking lot, and they continued to make their journey to Virginia. They still had an hour and a half to go, so Grace put on another podcast, but didn't drift off.
They had a conversation about how things were going to go in Virginia. Grace knew if she trusted August, so would her mom, so she didn't have to worry, but Julia (and most likely Erik) would be a different story. Julia would need time to warm up to him and trust him again, which both Grace and August understood, and were okay with.
Kal eventually drifted off once again, so August and Grace kept their voices down on order to not wake him.
Not that much longer passed, until August was pulling into Grace's childhood home. He had been here a few times before, when he was dating Grace, but hadn't been in a few months.
Grace noticed he was nervous, and reached out for his hand, which he gladly gave.
"It's gonna be okay, love." She whispered, and he nodded, before opening the door. He headed to the trunk to grab the bags, so Grace led Kal inside, and journeyed to the kitchen to find her mother, who was making lunch for everyone.
"Hi, mama," She said, and walked over to give her mom a hug.
"Hello angel,"Her mom said, hugging her daughter tight to her chest. "Where's August?" She asked, but her question was answered when August walked into the kitchen holding their bags. Her mom smiled, and they hugged as well.
"Wheres Julia?" Grace asked her mother.
"She's in her old room. Erik isn't here though, he went for a job interview." She said, and the three of them headed out of the kitchen. "Why don't you guys go get settled, I'm going to finish lunch, I just have to go and grab some stuff I forgot, okay?"
The couple nodded and headed up the first set of stairs, and into Graces room.
It wasn't overly large, about half the size of her and Augusts bedroom, but it was still a good size.  Grace had a queen bed that was in the middle of the room, with white bedding, and light pink and grey pillows. The light pink and grey theme continued throughout her whole room. Her walls were a eggshell white, and the baseboards were grey. her desk sat in the corner of the room, with a large hutch sitting on top. She had minimal wall decor, only her high school diploma and a few awards she won during school, which she assumed her mom hung up after she moved out, 2 years prior.
"Why don't I unpack, and you can go see Julia?" August suggested, while he sat the bags down, and walked over to Grace to wrap his arms around her. She smiled up at him, and pressed a small kiss to his lips.
"Okay," She said, before heading out of the bedroom, and up another flight of stairs to Julia's room. She knocked on the door, and heard a faint "Come In!" from Julia. She took a deep breath, and opened the door.
Julia was facing away from her, putting some washing into her dresser. When she heard the door open, she started to turn around.
"I could have come down Mo-," She began, but stopped when she saw that it wasn't her mom, but Grace standing there. "Gracie?" She whispered, as her eyes started to tear up.
"Hi, Jules." Grace said back, her tears forming as well. Julia dropped her shirt that she had been folding on the ground and ran over to her little sister, wrapping her up in her arms.
"Oh my god. I've missed you so much baby." Julia whispered in her ear.
Grace sniffled before talking. "I missed you too. Thank you for the package."
Julia released her, and led her over to sit together on the bed.
"Did Ethan get the postcard okay?" she asked, and ran her fingers through Grace's hair. Grace nodded.
"He said that he hopes you're doing okay after what happened, and that you're safe," She said. Julia smiled, and wrapped her arms around her little sister again.
"Did Mom tell you what we talked about on the phone yesterday?" Grace asked. Julia nodded.
"All she said was that August was alive and at home with you. I was a little worried and almost drove to Washington to make sure you were okay and safe, but Mom convinced me not to, which I now understand why," Julia said, her hand never leaving Grace's hair. Grace smiled at her.
"He's doing better. His face is healing, and he's working on gaining trust back. He'll start working with Sloane and the IMF to redeem himself but Sloane agreed that some family time would be good for him right now. I'm hoping to convince him to talk to his mom and let her know he's okay, but I haven't asked yet." She said. Julia smiled at her.
"I'm glad he's getting better. He tried to convince me to go with him, but I didn't know why, so I didn't go. It sounds like it wouldn't have been good if I did. What exactly happened?"
Grace smiled. "Auggie was in one helicopter, and Ethan was in another. Ethan was trying to get his helicopter out of the sky, and they ended up colliding. They fell into a crevice in the mountains, Ethan's helicopter fell, and hit Auggie's a few times. On the second time, a tube came out of the helicopter and sprayed Auggie in the side of the face with helicopter fuel. Then the helicopters fell out of the crevice, and dropped them on a cliff. They fought a little, and both ended going over the side, but were saved by a hook which was attached to one of the helicopters. Eventually they both climbed off of it and Ethan tugged on it, which caused it to come off the mountain and the hook hit Auggie in the forehead. It bounced off, but the force of the impact caused Auggie to fall backwards and he went tumbling down the mountain. He then told me that he ended up by the river, so he cleaned his face. He hid in a cave for a while, until he remembered that the Apostles had a safe house a few miles away, so he made his way over there, and attempted to sew up his face. The Apostles got him back into the country and back to me. He has since cut off all contact with them." She finished, and Julia's eyes were wide.
"How did he do on the stitches?" Julia asked with a smile on her face.
Grace giggled. "They were bad. I replaced them, but I'm kind of hoping you can look at them, since you're the nurse," Grace said.
Julia nodded. "Of course I will. Is he in your room?" She asked, and Grace nodded, before she led her to where August was. They found August in Grace's bedroom, on the floor, wrestling with Kal.
He looked up when the sisters walked in the room, and smiled apprehensively at Julia, who gave him warm smile back. He stood up, and sat on the bed at Grace's instruction.
"Julia's just going to check your injuries." Grace said, and peeled the bandage off.
Julia moved to inspect them. "They look good, really good actually," Julia said, reaching her hand out to give Grace a high five. She moved to inspect his burn. "His burn is looking better, but its going to be a long healing process. He may need burn treatment at a hospital but I think he'll be find without it. You'll have a scar, but it will be barely noticeable. Does it hurt at all?"
August nodded. "usually only when water hits it, or I touch it too much." He said.
"I've been putting burn cream on it to help with his pain. It tends to look a little red and angry in the morning but is fine once the cream is on it." Grace interjected, and pulled the cream out of the half empty bag on the bed. Julia took it and inspected it.
"This will definitely help with the pain, but I'd take him to a doctor to get a prescription cream, just to be on the safe side," Julia said, and reapplied the bandage onto August's forehead.
August nodded. "Thank you," He said, giving Julia a warm smile. "I also want to apologize for everything that happened,' He said quietly, not meeting Julia's eyes.
Grace and Julia shared a look, and Grace knew she wanted to speak to him in peace, so Grace left them, and headed down stairs to wait for her mom.
Julia took a seat on the bed. "I forgive you for what happened August. I may not know everything about you, and maybe it was because I never got the chance to know you well, but I want to." August smiled, his eyes still fixed on his sock covered feet.
"I'm very protective of Grace. I was 24 when she was born, and even though she wasn't my child, she felt like it. Our mom worked very hard to raise her after our dad died, and Rick and I were the only ones still living at home, so we would take over the role of parenting when Mom was working long shifts. When I found out she was dating you, I became scared." Julia whispered, and August finally looked up from his feet to meet her gaze. "When Ethan and I were together, he had told me about who you were, and what you did. He told me that everyone called you 'The Hammer', and you didn't take crap from anyone. Obviously, he didn't know you well, so I only got one side of the story."
August smiled small. "I love her with all my heart. I have since the moment I met her. I don't know what it was, but, when I saw her walk into the same elevator as me, it hit me like a ton of bricks. All I could think of was how beautiful she was, and how much I wanted to get to know her. I knew in that moment that I was so in love with her, and I barely knew her. I knew from our first date that she was going to be the one I marry, which is why I proposed so quick, and why we got married so quick. I wanted to protect her, and love her." He said, his voice breaking at the end, a stray tear falling from his eye. "I don't deserve her. She deserves so much more than me, but I thank God everyday that she loves me. When I came home from Kashmir and asked her to help me, she did without a second thought. She's held me every time I've woken up crying, every time I have an anxiety attack, and she's helping me to be better. I love her so much, and I want you to know I would never do anything to hurt her, I promise." He finished, looking up at Julia, who wrapped her arms around him.
"I see that now. I saw the way your eyes lit up with love when you saw her walk into the room, and how you kept looking at her for reassurance. Mom has told me stories of how her mental health wasn't the greatest a few months ago, so you dropped everything and took her to Disney World. She told me how you bring her little gifts from everywhere you go, and you gave her a burner phone so she can contact you on missions. I see it now, and I'm sorry that I didn't see that before. I hate that I missed out on so much of her marriage. I missed out on her engagement party, I missed the wedding, I missed everything. All because of my view of you." Julia said.
August smiled. "I plan on proposing again, so she can have the proper wedding she's always wanted, I just don't know when."
Julia immediately wrapped her arms around him. "I may not fully trust you yet, but I trust you with her. I trust that you won't hurt her." August smiled, and hugged her back, before Grace was calling them down for lunch. Julia immediately left the room, August following not far behind.
"Hey baby," Grace said, and pulled his face down for a kiss. August smiled.
"Hey angel," He responded, pressed another gentle kiss to her lips. Grace's arms went from his shoulders to his waist, and her mouth deepened the kiss. August's right hand came up to caress her face while the left settled on her waist, pulled her flush against him, and let out a breathless moan at the feeling of his wife pressed into him.
"Hey! When y'all are done eating each others faces, come and get lunch!" They heard a male voice shout. They immediately separated, and laughed when they saw that it was Rick, standing in the doorway of the kitchen, that faced the hallway.
"Hey Rick," August said, before following his wife into the kitchen.
"Hey, August! I thought you were dead, bro - HEY!" He exclaimed at Grace's fist coming into contact rather hard with his stomach.

It had been one of those days. You went to your college classes and everything was fine. However, it was fine until you passed by those three same people. Those three dang people who always payed attention to your body. “How’s it going, fatty?” The tall, blonde said to you. You weren’t exactly fat, you were just a bit chubby. Yet, they still saw you as fat. You tried to ignore her statement, you looked towards the ground and tried to walk a bit faster. A boy suddenly came in front of you, holding an invisible microphone like he was interviewing you.
“Is it hard to put on your clothes in the morning?” He pointed the imaginary microphone to you, waiting for an answer with a smirk on his face. You felt like crying but pushed his hand away and held the tears back. You could hear them laugh at you, but you just kept walking. You hurried to your car and drove home. Surprisingly, you didn’t cry. You didn’t cry until you got home. You opened the door and dropped your book bag to the ground. Actually you threw it. You didn’t care to notice Sams, “How was your day?” question that he usually does when you get home. You guessed he got off early.
He loved his job as a police officer, but he did like to be home with you. You basically ran up the stairs and got into your shared bedroom. You closed the door and fell on the bed. The tears that were threatening to spill from your eyes finally spilled. It happened every now and then. It was terrible. You did admit that you were chubby, but you weren’t exactly fat. You felt self conscious everyday, but you tried to love yourself. You did eat healthy and try to eat better, but it was just hard to lose weight. You felt tired and bad about yourself everyday because of them. The only thing that made you feel better was your precious, and beloved Sam.
Just as you were thinking that, a knock came at the door. “Who is it?” Your voice croaked out. “It’s me. Sam,” you heard from behind the door. You could hear how nervous he was. His voice kinda wavered. Sam was never good with his, and others, emotions. He tried his best but he felt like he never did a good job. But to you, he did an excellent job. “You can come in,” I said. It was quiet for awhile and you assumed he left. But, he didn’t. He walked in, slowly, his hands in his jackets front pockets, and his eyes looking sad. You hated seeing him look sad and you hated how your self confidence affected him as well.
“Hey, honey,” you said to him. He still looked sad, but he did have a little blush on his face after you called him “honey”. “Hey, doofus. You seemed to come up here pretty fast, something wrong?” You saw his eyes glance towards your cheeks that still had some tears. You looked down at the ground and tears started to form again. “Oh. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean-” you heard him start. He didn’t even finish his sentence before he got on the bed and sat in front of you, his hands suddenly out of his pockets and holding onto yours. He tilted your face up by your chin, gently. You looked into his green eyes and you saw worry.
He was worried for you and cared for you, and that fact alone made you feel so happy. “What happened? Was it those people again?” Sam got angry as he said “those people”. This wasn’t the first time you came home crying and Sam came to comfort you. You couldn’t say anything and just nodded. You heard Sam make a grunt sound. All of a sudden, you ended up in his lap. Your back against his chest, his head on top of yours, and his big arms wrapped around you lovingly. He was warm and that made you feel really nice. He kissed your head, kissed down to your ear, and kissed your cheeks where tears were. You smiled and giggled at him. Your giggle caused him to let out a deep chuckle.
“Now, let me say what I say everytime, okay doofus?” You nodded and he turned you around to face him. He put one hand on each of your cheeks and smiled. “You are beautiful. I don’t care what others say or think. You are beautiful. You are amazing, kind, and caring. I mean, you even took a chance on me! A brute!” He started laughing at the end of his statement. It caused you to laugh. “More importantly, you shouldn’t care what others think. I know you’ve been trying to lose weight, I’ve seen the conversations with James about healthy foods, and I know I can’t help you with all the facts, but I can help you with the support and love,” he said with a smile.
He was right. He always supported you. Whenever you weighed yourself he would be there. Not always, since he had to wake up early for work, but when he was, he was always supportive. It didn’t matter if you made it or didn’t lose what you hoped you did. He always ended that weighing session with hugs and kisses and supportive words. “And, I mean, my brothers also love you too. We’re always here to support you and help you. Erik doesn’t mind making a special fitted dress for you, Matthew doesn’t mind telling jokes or making some food for you when he visits, James doesn’t mind you asking questions, Damien doesn’t mind helping you with your emotional problems when I’m not there. We all love you, you doofus,” he said with a blush.
Sam wasn’t always open and he struggled with it. But whenever you were like this, you got to see Sam being open. He wasn’t talking about himself, but he was open with his actions and how much he loved you. Even if he called you a doofus, it was sweet and lovely. This caused tears to come to your eyes again. Sam noticed and his eyes widen. “Ah, I-I didn’t mean to make you sad again.” You shook your head as the tears spilled. “No, Sam. I’m so happy to call you my husband, and I love you and your brothers and I just...I’m so thankful for you,” you said in between sniffs. You smiled at him and leaned in to kiss him.
He was shocked at first but eventually kissed you back and wrapped his arms around your back. This is how it was supposed to be. Loving moments, not worried about your weight, and just loving yourself and each other. You had a while to go before you reach your goal weight, but as long as you had Sam, you would be just fine.
He pulled away and rested his forehead against your forehead. “I love you so much ya know that?” You smiled and giggled. “I love you so much too, doofus.” You whispered the doofus at the end and smirked at how he blushed deeply. He let out a little scoff and looked to the side. “That’s my nickname for you...” you heard him say softly. You laughed and rested your head on his collar bone. “I’m happy to be with you, and I know I have awhile to go on my weight but...thanks for being here. With me.”
He smiled and kissed your head. “I love you and will always be with you no matter what.” That was it. That was all it took for you to feel better and have a little more confidence in yourself.

The Firm - Chapter 2
Prologue Chapter 1
Summary:  Erik has been hired to find an embezzler.
Pairing: Erik x Black!OC
Genre: Suspense
Words: 1.8K+
--- Present Moment ---
Erik notices all the papers flying around him as he lifts himself up off the ground. He has no idea what just happened; he just recalls walking towards the elevators and being hit with such force it knocked him off his feet. He begins to pick up the papers close to him, and as he hands them to the owner, he looks down to see big brown apologetic eyes glancing at him.
He smiles at her while she just snatches the papers out of his hand and pushes her glasses back up on her face. As they continue to pick up the papers, he can hear soft sounds. LaNyah is silently chastising herself. “How could you be so stupid? Why were you running anyway? You’re still late.” Looking over at the handsome gentleman she just trampled, “Ugh, this day cannot get any worse.”
LaNyah gathers all her stuff including the now disorganized folder and runs to the elevators. She is still muttering to herself as she wills the elevator to come quickly. Erik slowly makes his way over and waits behind her. When the elevator car arrives, they both step in, and he asks her, “What floor are you going to?” She does not respond and just pushes the button for the 31st floor. He pushes the 35 and moves to the back of the elevator.
As the elevator ascends, LaNyah focuses on the climbing numbers above her head while rocking back and forth on her heels. She is trying her hardest not to look back at the man who is standing behind her. The one who she knocked over in her rush to get to the office on time. Her thoughts are all over the place and yet crowded due to their proximity to one another. She nervously starts tapping on the folder in her hands as she mentally ticks off what she needs to do as soon as she gets to her desk.
Erik takes in her appearance from top to bottom. He knows her eyes are a deep brown behind her colorful rimmed glasses. Her hair was in a bun that was not doing much to control her unruly curls. She is wearing a deep blue blouse and a black pencil skirt. He tries not to laugh as he notices the Nike slides that grace her stockinged feet with her heels in the bag she carries. However, he cannot help the harsh guffaw that comes out when he sees the ugly run down her pantyhose. Someone is not having a good day, and it’s not even 9.
“Need to reorganize this folder and all the files inside. Email the spreadsheets. Run and print out the weekly reports.” She does not realize that she was going over her list aloud. Erik is behind her smirking and was about to say something to her when they hear the ding indicating that they are on the 31st floor. She is startled out of her musings before collecting herself. She holds the door long enough to glance back and issue a rushed apology, “Sorry for running you over.”
“It’s okay,” he starts as the door closes. The laughter that he had been holding released as the elevator continues to the top floor. How did someone that skittish get a job here? He figured Green would give him the lay of the land, so it will not take him too long to find out what departments are on the 31st floor. The elevator stops and dings letting him know he has arrived at the top of the building. He steps off and smiles at the layout.
Green has the whole floor to himself. Erik just stepped into his open reception area. He can see the man through the glass doors that separate him from the front on the right. A small conference room space is connected to his office on the left. It can also be accessed through another set of doors near a coffee bar to the right of the reception area. He likes this layout; it is similar to what he has in his building. What’s the saying, ‘Great minds, think alike?’ He smooths out his jacket as he moves further into the office space. He walks over to the receptionist’s desk and introduces himself. “Hello, I’m Erik Stevens. I have a meeting with Alexander Green.”
LaNyah reaches her office in the back corner of the Accounting side of the floor. She drops everything and slumps into her seat. She reaches over to pick up her heels to change into and throws the slides back into her bag. She turns on the computer while looking at the clock above her; it is 10 minutes after 9. She shakes her head as her email loads on the screen.
She looks at the cluttered mess that is all the files in her folder. She dumps everything out and starts rearranging everything so that it is in order for when she meets with Green this morning. Thinking about Green, she recalls that the mystery guy on the elevator pressed the floor for his office. She starts wondering what business he can have with the company CEO.
Opening her email, she hopes that she has a meeting notice so she can prepare herself. She has only met Mr. Green during her interview and hiring processes. She has never dealt with him outside of that since Matt is her immediate supervisor. There is no meeting notice, email or anything. Groaning she goes back to fixing the documents in the folder. She runs her clammy hands across her skirt and remembers that she needs to throw out her ruined pantyhose.
20 minutes later, LaNyah decides to grab some tea from the breakroom. Her focus keeps shifting to the stranger she ran into, and that is very unsettling to her. She knows he is taller than she is and that the suit he was wearing fit him nicely. He had broad shoulders and short dreads, but she does not recall much else. While sipping on her tea, she thinks about his scent that she caught in the elevator. She is so wrapped up in the moment that she nearly misses, Matt, calling her name.
The receptionist looks up at Erik and nods. “Of course Mr. Stevens, Mr. Green is expecting you.” She stands up and points towards the coffee bar. “Can I get you anything before your meeting?”
“Yes. Just coffee, black, thank you.” She nods and then waves him over to Green’s office.
“I will be right in with your coffee, Mr. Stevens.” He walks over to the doors and knocks. He hears Green reply from behind the door with a shit-eating grin on his face.
“Come on in, Stevens.” He stands up from behind his desk and walks around to greet Erik. “It has been too long, man.”
“Too long? Green, you know we were never supposed to cross paths again.” He laughs as he pulls him in for a brotherly hug, big slaps on the back and all.
“Yeah, well shit happens, and you are the best man for this job Stevens. Besides, you aren’t the only one keeping tabs on everybody.” Green points to the couch for them to sit.
“I see that.” Green’s receptionist comes in with two cups of coffee and sets them down in front of them.
“Thank you, Stacey, that will be all for now.” She turns to leave and returns to her desk.
“Alright, Green. Spill it. I want to hear this from you and not the report that I memorized.” Erik picks up his coffee and inhales the deep aroma of the blend.
“Every quarter, I randomly pull reports from our different accounts to see that everything is on the up and up. Well this time, I noticed that our scholarship fund has been very inconsistent over the course of the last 3 months.” Erik nods.
“The person I will be working with, is she the only one who has access to these reports?”
“No, her whole team does, but she is the budget analyst, so the weekly reconcile is a part of her job.” Green runs his hands across his face, “I am getting ready to go overseas to handle some new business for the next few weeks and just do not have the time to do an internal audit, but this needs to be resolved immediately. I need you to get to the bottom of this whole thing.”
“Wait, are you calling me in as a consultant or as a fucking babysitter? This shit can always wait until you return, you know how this team and this individual work.” Green slowly shakes his head. Getting louder, “Green, what are you not telling me?” Erik asks. Green gets up, moves to his desk, and hits a button on his phone.
“Stacey, please call Miss Cole and patch her through.”
“Yes sir, just a moment.”
“LaNyah!” Matt calls out to her again. Waving a hand in her face, “Hello, earth to LaNyah.” She shakes herself out of her reflections.
“Yes Matt, how can I help you?” She sets her tea down on the counter.
“Mr. Green is calling for you, pick up line 3.” He walks out of the breakroom as LaNyah walks over to the nearby phone.
“This is LaNyah. How can I help you, Mr. Green?” She twirls the cord around her finger as she waits for his response.
“Good Morning Miss Cole. I would like you to gather up the files I inquired about last week. I need you to come upstairs immediately.”
“Yes sir, I am on the way.” She hangs up the phone and runs over to her desk, tea forgotten. She picks up the folder, a few pens and walks to the elevator. As the elevator goes up, Nyah could sense that familiar feeling rising in her throat. It was that uneasiness that crept into her whenever she felt nervous. Nyah breathes in and out slowly trying to calm down. "It's going to be okay," she says to herself in a rushed tone. She breathes in and out again. "You will be okay. No worries." She says to herself. Just as she begins to breathe in and out again, the elevator stops, and the bell goes off. Nyah has arrived on the 35th floor. She needs this job, and she loves what she does. She breathes in and out once more. “You got this,” she says as she steps out of the elevator and sees Stacey.
“Hi Miss Cole, you can go right in. Mr. Green is expecting you.” She points to his office and not the conference room where Nyah thought they would be meeting. She walks over, and before she can knock on the door, Green greets her.
“Miss Cole, thank you for coming up so quickly.” He ushers her in and points to the chair in front of his desk. “Please have a seat.” She realizes that there is someone else in the office sitting on the couch. As she looks over, Green starts talking again. “LaNyah Cole, please meet Erik Stevens.” Her pleasant smile disappears as she makes eye contact with him. He was the good-looking man that she ran over in the lobby. So, this day could get worse.

Merry New Year!
Tumblr media
I listen to a fucking ton of podcasts. Here are a few I don’t miss. Grouped but not ranked. Tried to include a favorite or representative episode for each. I don’t know what platform you listen to things on so I went with firm specific or top google results for each.
Finance: the bulk of my listening goes to my favorite topic
RopesTalk: Ropes and Gray does a great job of providing concise insight on legal issues primarily in finance and IP.  Quick hit on CDS
Conversations with Tyler: I didn’t know where to put this one but Tyler Cowen is a great economist and has surprisingly good questions no matter the topic. Matt Levine is good one to start with
HBR Idea Cast: Long running pod from the Harvard Business Review. Here is this year’s econ Nobel winner Esther Duflo
Invest Like the Best: Patrick O'Shaughnessy of O'Shaughnessy Asset Management talks to investors of all stripes. Here is a great ep with @modestproposal
Macro Musings: David Beckworth of Mercatus Center at George Mason University talks econ and markets in depth. A good one with Chris Crowe from Capula
Macro Voices: the host Erik Townsend is not particularly impressive but he gets some fine guests. Chris Cole the CIO of Artemis has done two strong episodes both linked within
Exchanges at Goldman Sachs: amazing guest and interviewers across the board. Can’t go wrong with this one.  The parting spot from Gary Cohn is very good
Morgan Stanley Ideas: discussions from the research team at MS. My favorite is when they examine “cypto currencies” through the lens of other pretend money like western Massachusetts’s BerkShares
Quantcast: from Risk.net if you really want to get into the weeds there are few better. Mats Kjaer, one of the most talented risk quants out there, formerly of Barclays now at Bloomberg shares his latest on capital valuation adjustment
Reorg: a go to for distressed, BK, liquidations, and debt litigation. A good example of what to expect is their latest on new issuance covenant trends
Top Traders Unplugged: a back and forth with more quant focused, CTA, and trend following traders. Not sure how they swung this one but they bagged the founders of a visionary shop AHL. Michael Adam, David Harding, founder and CEO of Winton Group, and Martin Lueck, co-founder and president of Aspect Capital
Debtwire: broad based coverage on levered finance throughout that side of the capital stack. Proskauer Rose’s private credit restructuring group is a good one
Blackstone: crab claws, you know the drill. Former partner and GSO founder Dwight Scott is a standout
Activist Insight: a look at all that happens in the primarily domestic side of activist investing. One to get you caught up is The top 10 wildest campaigns of 2019
Alpha Exchange: New but shows promise. The first episode hooked me Louis-Vincent Gave, CEO and Founding Partner, Gavekal
JP Morgan Eye on the Market: Michael Cemblast is razor sharp. It is rather topical and quick, just subscribe.
Capital Allocators: Ted Seides formerly one of the more influential names in early stage fund of funds talks with some of the biggest names in alternatives and more. Whitebox Advisors’s Andy Redleaf is amazing
Inside the Ice House: from ICE / NYSE very broad but worth a listen. John Arnold is the best one I have heard
Odd Lots: as often as I question some choices of guests Tracy Alloway is fantastic. Bill Janeway on the unicorn bubble
CFTC Talks: a bit dry but they bring in some hitters and do not mind deep diving at all. A good idea of what to expect is George Saravelos Deutsche Bank, Global Co-head FX Research
Barstool: not for everyone but I am a Stoolie since year one, a bunch of my friends work there, and they put out some of the funniest stuff on the internet.  I had brutal year and couldn’t have handled it without their levity.
Pardon My Take: Number one podcast for a reason.  Football guys guys. Produced by Scituate’s finest Handsome Hank. If you are one of the few not listening the best of 2019 is a fine dropping off point
Spittin Chiclets: hockey from the standpoint of both fans and former pros. Hosted by my summer neighbor and the originator of gassin’ beers and chuckin’ knucks Ryan Whitney.  Doing another best of cop out
Fore Play: I don’t even play golf (rage and lack of patience) but this pod is so funny and they treat the game with an irreverence that is exactly what it needs. Jake Owens’s story about Phil Mickelson is perfection
Micks Tape: basketball focused but plenty of discussion of sports at large, stand-up comedy, and the only place I find out about new rap.  It is a weird episode but I fell off a treadmill laughing to ‘All Star Draft and Wild Hypotheticals With YP’
Light Camera: where I go for movie reviews and some of the goofiest skits I have ever heard.  I found their second interview with Jesse Eisenberg fascinating
The Corp: a look at entrepreneurs from Alex Rodriguez and Big Cat. Pulls some of the biggest names out there.  Martha Stewart is a personal favorite
Gambling: it is derivative market making but for sports
Bet the Process: Rufus Peabody is one of the best football and golf handicappers on the planet. Jeff Ma former captain of the MIT blackjack team is as good at cross discipline analytics as it gets.  Former head of market making at Pinnacle Ted Knutson bridges the finance / gambling bridge well
Pinnacle: gambling through the lens of the most quantitatively advanced sports book out there. In this ep Joe Peta discusses his overlapping careers in hedge funds and gambling
Gamble On: this pod from US Bets focuses on offshore and online gaming. Not a ton of shelf life on these so the latest on Draft Kings going public is worth a listen
Gaming Today: more of an old school discussion from the standpoint of Vegas bookmakers.  They remind me of floor traders. Listen to the latest and try to find some edge
Misc.
Daves of Thunder: Feeney and Shek are two tremendously talented comedy writers and they make me laugh ever episode.  I would start pre-hiatus from the top because the jokes get very inside baseball
Hodinkee: if you have any interest in vintage watches this is really the only place to go.  Ben Clymer’s backstory is what watch collecting is all about
David Chang: insights on the food industry and running a business from a real pro in both regards. Joe Beef is one of my favorite places on earth so that is a good one to check
Brattlecast: books old and or rare. Ken Gloss owns my favorite shop in Boston and has decades of stories about it.  Finds of a Lifetime is the goal
Bon Appétit: recipes and trends from the food world in a relaxed and approachable format. Just a delight. They made a perfect Thanksgiving, I stole two recipes and I barely cook
Beyond Yacht Rock: I have learned more about music from this show than in my years of formal training and symphony involvement.  I would take it from the top  but if you need a good cry, JD’s songs from his late wife is a touching tribute
Comedy Bang Bang: if you are in need of a good laugh instead this inside look at comedy is second to none.  I relisten to Paul F. Tompkins as Werner Herzog and every time it kills me
All the Smoke: the newest addition gives a player perspective on the NBA from Stephen Jackson and Matty Barnes.  It made me like Dwayne Wade which as a Celtics fan is tough
If there is anything you think I might enjoy based on these I would be pleased as punch to hear from you.
