GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3: 3/5

bad news: the peepee poopoo LOLRANDOM EPICBACON bullshit from the first two is still here.  good news: it turns down increasingly as the movie goes on. in its place is the best production design in Marvel’s canon and a film that takes its sweet time to finally give these doofuses some depth.  

Peter Quill is finally, mercifully demoted as Rocket takes over as the lead of the movie — to mostly good results. Mantis and Nebula emerge as the emotional core of the cast, finally given space to breathe as their own characters.

Vol 3 is conscious of its place in the MCU’s downward spiral of imagination, and James Gunn spends its entire run making bold creative decisions. big swings. kinetic, racecar camera movement; grotesque body horror; practical sets that make the previous two Guardians films look anemic; and total earnestness. in its action, grossness, honest emotion, clarity in pathos, and focus on character, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is what every MCU film since Endgame couldn’t be.  

but not without fault.  the big swings are endearing, but not all of them land. 

the needledrops that gave the first film quirk and structure have devolved into total distraction.  Gunn stops the film 3 or 4 times to insert music videos, instead of story. this bloats the film’s ridiculous run time, as does an unfocused and meandering first act. The High Evolutionary is an underbaked villain.  well-acted by a hammy Chukwudi Iwuji, and more evolved than Ego and Ronan the Accuser, but no less of a cartoon. 

i don’t like the humor, and the MCU’s first F-bomb is wasted on one of a dozen unfunny Step Brothers improv scenes that all fizzle with no conclusion.

i groaned for the first 45 minutes of this movie, and my rating is a testament to its insistence upon itself to get better every 10 minutes. by the end, i cried so much i forgot even my biggest issues. it works as a totally self-contained story, and it’s a great fireworks finale to a studio’s glory days.
