The steam engines really were the things that made me come to the museum. They are all working engines. They even had what was basically an Eolipile even though it wasn't labelled as such. I knew I had to be careful picking the day I went because the collection is shut every Tuesday for maintenance. But today is Wednesday and the smell of engines and oil was magnificent.

The absolute drawcard of this collection is the Boulton & Watt Engine who were big names in steam engines in the 1700s and I absolutely wanted to see this as is apparently the oldest rotative steam engine in the world - AND IT STILL WORKS. It wasn't operating while I was there though, apparently its all a matter of which volunteers are working on any given day, some have the qualifications to run it, others do not.

This engine worked for over 100 years helping to make beer in a brewery in London before being donated to the museum. Fun thing I learned is that Matthew Boulton wasn't just involved in steam. He also produced jewellery with Wedgewood
