Who is to blame for the downfall in recent years at Tottenham Hotspur? And what’s next for Spurs?
It’s only been 4 years since Tottenham Hotspur competed in their first ever UEFA Champions League final and despite losing 2-0 to Liverpool, Spurs fans were excited to see what the future would bring.
With what seemed to be the perfect coach and a team full of potential, they looked ahead to more cup runs and potentially their first trophy since 2008.
Fast forward to the present day and Tottenham sit in 6th place, struggling to qualify for any European competition after sacking their manager and then also their interim manager.
With fans becoming more and more restless and with repeated calls for owner, ENIC group to sell the club, what has gone wrong?
Daniel Levy is the chairman of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, and although Joe Louis’ ENIC group hold a majority stake in ownership, Levy also has shares meaning he essentially has the role of chairman and owner. He took over from entrepreneur Alan Sugar in 1991 and has since built a brand recognised around the world, a new stadium which is widely regarded as the best in Europe and facilities that seemingly every player would dream of training on. But things aren’t going as well as he and ENIC might have hoped. With only 1 trophy to their name – the Carling Cup (League Cup) – won in 2008, fans would have expected a better return and are now starting to point fingers.

Despite a 15-year drought in silverware, Spurs have still had some exciting times. The most recent being a spot in the UEFA Champions League final in 2019 against fellow English club, Liverpool. But with a hugely disappointing display and result, what followed was the sacking of one of the most popular managers among the fans in recent times, Mauricio Pochettino. Daniel Levy swiftly moved on with the appointment of serial winner, Jose Mourinho but without even completing his second season, he faced the same punishment as his predecessor. Next in the hotseat was a manager who had won titles at every club he’s been, similar to Jose Mourinho.  And after a very brief spell with Nuno Espirito Santo, Antonio Conte was the latest ex-Chelsea manager to join the Lilywhites but yet again, he was sacked before finishing his second season having not won a trophy. What Conte did do though, was take aim at the club in his last ever press conference in Spurs colours, speaking words that Tottenham fans found all too familiar and agreeing with majority of what he had to say. Now without a manager again, supporters are starting to feel that the blame should be shifted from the manager/players to those higher up.
I recently spoke to Spurs fan and host of the podcast, ‘The Fighting Cock’, Flav Bateman on what he felt was going wrong at the club and why his team are struggling so much.
“Daniel Levy’s the main problem.
“He’s made bad mistake after bad mistake. If Daniel Levy was an employee of Daniel Levy, would he have fired himself by now? And probably he would.”
He also spoke about how little pressure is on the Tottenham chairman on getting it right.
“There’s no consequence to Levy getting things wrong because he owns the football club”
Recently, Sky Sports cameras picked up banners and signs saying, ‘LEVY OUT’ and despite Flav claiming that Levy felt under no pressure when making mistakes, he insisted that these messages from the fans would still have a big impact on the Tottenham chairman.
“What the fans can do is make it difficult for him. And that’s what we saw with the banners against [Manchester] United.
“He’s noticing that. He wants that to go away. That isn’t a good look on TV when he’s trying to do business with brand deals”.
Steve Perry is also a Spurs fan and has been since 1965. He’s experienced “great memories and teams over the years”. But even he felt that the club are in need of a change.
“Unfortunately under ENIC, Spurs will never return to the glory days of winning trophies.
“Our only hope is we get a mega rich buyer with money to burn. It’s not the way it should be but the club with the largest wallet wins the most trophies”
He was of course making reference to Manchester City finding success after being bought by The Abu Dhabi United Group in 2008.
Despite making claims that mass amounts of money needed to be spent in order to get the club on the right track again, he also said how there was another big factor that Spurs had continuously gotten wrong.
“There is a lot of criticism of recruitment and this is another huge factor in our failure to achieve footballing success, we waste money recruiting badly.
“Players such as: Walker, Vertonghen, Dembele and Eriksen all left and were replaced by players of inferior quality”.
Tottenham have indeed spent “not insignificant sums of money” as described by Flav but as Steve mentioned, none of the players have made the impact that the manager and fans would have wanted, leading them to blame the man who was responsible of the transfers before getting suspended for ‘false accounting’, former Director of Football, Fabio Paratici. It was later found out that Daniel Levy appointed Paratici having already known that the Italian could face a two-and-a-half-year ban.
Steve Perry spoke about the importance of the Daniel Levy’s next step as Tottenham chairman as well as the consequences that his previous actions could have.
“Appointing a director of football already under suspicion together with a manager who has a reputation of staying at a club for two seasons with clearly no onward plan, the next appointment is crucial for Levy and the club.”
Whoever the next manager of this club will be is currently anyone’s guess. With fans throwing up names like Mauricio Pochettino & Julien Nagelsmann, no one is really sure what the direction of this club looks like. But one thing seems certain among the fanbase, Daniel Levy is not welcome to stay and find out.

the way alicent says "you are no son of mine" and turns around and walks away and the chain that connects her ankle to aegon's jingles with every step. but they key aspect here is not that alicent is chained to aegon, it's that aegon is chained to alicent, and she does not want to let go. she will drag him with her to the very end because of love, no matter how miserable it will be. it started with them and it will end with them.

Irony Poisoning Chapter 1
Before Enid could work up the courage to text Wednesday at the number Xavier had given her with an unnervingly knowing smile, she received a call from Morticia Addams.
"Can you hear me? I'm not quite current on this technology. Crystal balls are so much more personal, don't you think?"
Enid nodded several times before she remembered that this was neither a crystal ball, nor a video call. "Oh, yeah. For sure, Mrs. Addams... Um…"
"Morticia, please."
"Oh, okay, um, Morticia."
"Thing got your number from Wednesday's cellular telephone," she said, and Enid wondered if she could read minds too.
"That's cool."
"I hope you'll forgive my calling you so suddenly when we haven't even been formally introduced. Honestly, Wednesday has no respect for tradition. How are you supposed to ask for our blessing when we haven't even crossed foils or exchanged pitcher plants? I was hoping Nevermore would instill some sense of tradition in her, but she continues to insist that tradition is just a euphemism for peer pressure from dead people."
"That sounds like her," said Enid. "Um, is…"
"Wednesday is indisposed at the moment, I'm afraid," said Morticia. "She's been a bit under the weather since she came back from school. Not even an electroshock treatment from her Uncle could raise her spirits. I was hoping a visit from her friend might do the trick. Thing suggested it. He says our Wednesday has taken quite a shine to you."
"Thing exaggerates."
"Notoriously," said Morticia, "but he also dotes on Wednesday. He's quite concerned about her. We all are. She isn't acting quite like herself. She keeps watching films in color."
"Oh," Enid said sadly, thinking of Legally Blonde. She had really wanted to be the first to inflict it on Wednesday. Elle Woods and Vivian Kensington were practically canon.
"And listening to… cheerful music,"
"Oh," she said again.
"And wearing a snood."
"Oh."
"I understand if she's got the chills, but we have plenty of good old-fashioned hairshirts. You will come, won't you? Gomez has arranged everything. He can send you the tickets through his cellular telephone, apparently. Perhaps I should learn a bit more about them. Some of Wednesdays… selfies? They're quite flattering."
"I could teach you?" Enid offered, ever the people-pleaser.
"Then you'll come?"
"Of course," said Enid. "Thank you for inviting me."
Morticia lowered her voice to a whisper. "I feel I must warn you that Wednesday's more… acerbic personality traits tend to assert themselves when she's unwell."
"Oh, yeah, I was there when she got shot. Well, not exactly, but I was there right afterwards."
It suddenly occurred to Enid that Wednesday might not have told her parents she got shot. It seemed like the sort of thing one might hide from their parents, if they could get away with hiding anything from their parents. Of course, there had been parent-teacher conferences after the incident, and Wednesday's family even attended theirs, but Enid didn't know what was said at them. She knew the truth, the official Normie press release, and literally all of the gossip. She didn't know what the Addamses knew.
"Wednesday mentioned that," said Morticia, who could almost definitely read minds. "She said you saved her from the Hyde. We owe you a great debt of gratitude, Enid Sinclair."
"I think we both know Wednesday would have found a way to take care of herself."
"Of course," said Morticia, and even without the crystal ball or video call, Enid could tell she was smiling, "but she so rarely allows anyone else to take care of her. Not even her own family. She trusted you. For that, I am grateful."
Only the Addamses could leave Enid speechless.
