This week, I want to mention a few of my absolute favorite graphic novels and how they’ve influenced and informed MY work as a visual artist and storyteller.
Let’s start with Emily Carroll’s Through the Woods…this…

Yes, it’s that time of the year where The Beat quizzes a wide swath of creators, journalists, retailers and other comics people for their upcoming projects, thoughts on the past and future of the industry, and inspirations. Huge thanks to everyone who took the time to participate, as you’ll find some very interesting takes on where we might be going below, as well as a ton of news about upcoming books. We’ll be running the survey in five parts as always, culminating in the naming of the Comics Industry Person of the Year.
Emma Vieceli, Comicker
2019 Projects: Having switched hats a bit this year, my biggest project for 2019 is a writing one: Life is Strange for Titan comics and Square Enix. I’ll of course be continuing with my co-created independent title,. Beyond that, some fun bit and bobs waiting to play out; aren’t there always? 😉
What was the biggest story in comics in 2018? There have been so many sadly negative stories in 2018, from genuine losses of talented and loved people to anger, upset and fury over the fact that some people still don’t seem able to just enjoy comics and all it can encompass, but I’m going to instead focus on the fact that I personally felt an injection of enthusiasm into the industry this year. Somehow it felt that a resilience and determination was instilled, perhaps to counter some of the negative in the world, generally. I’ve seen a lot of successes and excited friends. Creators are making transitions to new mediums and fans are getting behind them. It’s not a single news story, but it’s a joy seeing the waves of unification and enthusiasm that have risen up in my internet- bubble over the last year.
What will be the biggest story in comics in 2019? A generous billionaire shall swoop into the publishing industry and financially bolster us all. Industry-wide weekends and evenings shall be enforced and sick pay shall be introduced. The billionaire shall be loved and we’ll make a statue of them and hold an annual celebration of their greatness.
I’m pretty sure that’s what I heard, anyways.
What guilty pleasure (of any kind) are you looking forward to in 2019? Spending more time with my creator-owned baby, BREAKS. this year got very busy and I lost a lot of my buffer for uploading. I’m looking forward to some self-indulgent comicking 🙂
Who inspired you in 2018? Every single person who takes the time to contact me and say they’ve enjoyed what I’ve made. That is the biggest inspiration we can hope for. But I’ll also say Andrew James of Titan Comics – he was my editor for Doctor Who a couple of years back and was willing to take a chance and offer me my first monthly writing gig with Life is Strange. His confidence in me has been hugely inspiring and helped me do something I wasn’t sure I’d ever get a chance to.
  Erica Schultz, Writer/Editor
2019 projects: The trade paperback of Twelve Devils Dancing comes out the first NCBD of January with a cover by Bill Sienkiewicz. The Good Fight anthology comes out next year. I’m working on a project with Emily Pearson, another with Liana Kangas, and a third with Stelladia.
What was the biggest story in comics in 2018? The passing of Stan Lee.
What will be the biggest story in comics in 2019? Captain Marvel’s film, and how Kelly Sue, Jaime McKelvie, Dave Lopez, and Dexter Soy set that story up to be amazing.
Jimmy Palmiotti, Creator-Writer
2019 Projects: Wonder Woman for DC 100 Walmart exclusive- Sex and Violence Vol. 3- Painkiller Jane mini- series and feature film- Random Acts of Violence feature film- Coney Island graphic novel and Mystery Marvel project.
What was the biggest story in comics in 2018? Sadly the passing of Stan Lee, one of my heroes and a friend, and on a positive note, the release of the DC 100 page exclusive comics for Walmart.
What will be the biggest story in comics in 2019? Creators once again separating themselves from the big companies to create their own characters mainly because the biggest companies out there do not involve the creators in the development, past comics, of characters they work on into film and TV and barely include them in a % of the license income they make off their images. This is a business that has no security for the talent as they get older, even though the biggest companies can easily help them and choose not to, and because of this, creators will be going elsewhere. An obvious and big reaction to this is we will see everything but the better selling titles take a huge hit and a ton of cancellations across the board. I also think this is the year where comics as a whole will be taking a hit unless things change really quickly.
What guilty pleasure (of any kind) are you looking forward to in 2019? More creator owned character development and spending some more time traveling and having fun with my wife.
Who inspired you in 2018? My wife, Amanda Conner, continues to inspire me each and every day to be a better person, work through my problems, and enjoy life… and not make it about work all the time. After so many years of hustling, what is important is becoming clearer because of her. I am thankful for that.
John Green, writer/artist
2019 Projects: The second book in my KITTEN CONSTRUCTION COMPANY series, “A Bridge Too Fur,” comes out in Fall from First Second Books.
What was the biggest story in comics in 2018? Not so much a story, but news that the world heard (and felt) both within and outside of the comics industry was the passing of Stan Lee.
What will be the biggest story in comics in 2019? Hopefully something GOOD and not something scandalous or heartbreaking!
What guilty pleasure (of any kind) are you looking forward to in 2019? Probably the next Star Wars, I guess.
Joshua Frankel, Publisher, Z2 Comics
2019 Projects: Right now Z2 Comics has 8 books or so in production for next year 5-6 of them are some of our tentpole music books. The one coming out the soonest and that has been announced is the Ghost of Ohio. The book is by Andy Biersack (lead singer of the Black Veil Brides) Scott Tuft and Eryk Donovan. It is going to tie into Andy’s same named second solo album. We’re expecting big things out of the project. Aside from that of announced books we have Run The Dungeon and D&D comedy written by Patrick Kindlon and Drawn by Goran Gliogvic. Lastly we have Tales of The Music Makers a book showcasing people the Music Maker Relief fund have helped and draw by Gary Dumm.
Some of our biggest books this year will be announcing shortly after this article runs ( and one before most likely)
What was the biggest story in comics in 2018? I think the acquisition of of comic book companies by broader media companies is probably the biggest story. In a span of a year Millarworld got bought by Netflix, Valiant getting bought by DMG wholesale and now Darkhorse having a majority stake bought by a Chinese VC firm. As a broader story in the last couple of years there has been a flood of investment being poured into comics. That said despite all of this money being pushed in sales have shrunk at least in the direct market. It seems counterintuitive but investment in comics is actually not great for the market as a whole, though it does benefit the people working in the industry.
What will be the biggest story in comics in 2019? I hate to say it but I think the sugar rush of investment money is going to start to wear off. Your going to see a lot of comic companies either downsizing or folding up shop. The Lion Forge layoffs are probably just the tip of the iceberg. Also it should be noted it looks like the economy is about to slow down and possibly contract next year. This will most likely accelerate these trends
What guilty pleasure (of any kind) are you looking forward to in 2019? Probably some horrible new food that’s invented
Who inspired you in 2018? This is going to sound super pretentious but I read a book called On Grand Strategy by John Lewis Gaddis. His basic thesis is that to properly employ a grand strategy a certain cognitive dissonance is needed where one has to plan out details carefully but roll with the punches when those details change. He uses a few historical examples from Xerxes to FDR. Overall that idea has been very helpful in running Z2 in the last year.
Mark Newgarden. Cartoonist
2019 Projects: How To Re-Read Nancy What was the biggest story in comics in 2018? Stan Lee dies What guilty pleasure (of any kind) are you looking forward to in 2019? Big boy pants
Brian Fies, Cartoonist
2019 Projects: “A Fire Story” graphic novel, to be published by Abrams in March 2019, expands the 18-page Emmy Award-winning webcomic I posted after my home was destroyed in the California wildfires of October 2017. The 160-page full-color hardcover tells more of my family’s story as well as the stories of others affected by the fire, while also touching on issues of class and climate change.
What was the biggest story in comics in 2018? Stan Lee’s death, and the reflection on where comics came from and where they’re going that it prompted.
What guilty pleasure (of any kind) are you looking forward to in 2019? Whatever movies Marvel cranks out. They’re not all great, but they’ve all been entertaining.
Who inspired you in 2018? Carol Tyler always inspires me because she makes high-quality comics with outstanding heart and craftsmanship.
Peter Kuper, cartoonist
2019 Projects: Adapting Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness
What was the biggest story in comics in 2018? Too few books on climate change
What will be the biggest story in comics in 2019? More books on climate change
What guilty pleasure (of any kind) are you looking forward to in 2019? Going back to Oaxaca, Mexico
Julia Wertz, cartoonist
2019 Projects: I’m working on an autobiographical book about my last years in NYC, as well as keeping up with daily diary comics at Patreon
What was the biggest story in comics in 2018? Unfortunately, Cody Pickrodt’s lawsuit.
What will be the biggest story in comics in 2019? The resolution of that lawsuit, which I hope he loses.
What guilty pleasure (of any kind) are you looking forward to in 2019? It’s not really a guilty pleasure, more just a pleasure, but I always look forward to Gabrielle Bell’s diary comics
Who inspired you in 2018? Liana Finck, who’s book Passing for Human, was released this year and was really unique and interesting, and she also continues to churn out cartoons for the New Yorker and on her instagram that somehow distill the human condition into one hilarious panel.
Sarah Glidden, cartoonist
2019 Projects: I’ve been on maternity leave for the last 7 months but he’s about to go to day care two days a week so I’m excited to get back to work.
What was the biggest story in comics in 2018? Cody Pickrodt suing his alleged rape victim as well as ten other cartoonists, critics and publishers who came out in support of her is one of the most despicable uses of the legal system I’ve ever seen in the comics community.
What will be the biggest story in comics in 2019? When the 11 beat this lawsuit.
What guilty pleasure (of any kind) are you looking forward to in 2019? Paying a day care to take care of my son for a few days a week so I can work on comics, which financially makes zero sense.
Who inspired you in 2018? I could pretend its not my baby but who am I kidding? He makes me see the world differently.
Jeffrey Brown, cartoonist
2019 Projects: My new picture book, “My Teacher Is A Robot”, comes out in June
What was the biggest story in comics in 2018? Stan Lee passing away. Also, side note, how old and out of touch is Bill Maher to use Lee’s death as an opportunity to declare that the comics medium has no value?!
What will be the biggest story in comics in 2019? Barnes & Noble will experiment with a new kind of store that expands the graphic novel section, eliminates all other categories, and focuses on comics and pop culture related merchandise. The stores will work with Diamond Distributors and they’ll also sell a large selection of both new and out of print pamphlet comics.
Joe Casey, Renaissance Man
2019 Projects: March: JESUSFREAK with Benjamin Marra (Image Comics). April: SEX Vol. 6 with Piotr Kowalski (Image Comics).
What was the biggest story in comics in 2018? I don’t know how “big” a story it was, since death is an inevitable part of life, but we lost a lot of legends this year. Steve Ditko. Harlan Ellison. Jon Schnepp. Russ Heath. Gary Friedrich. Marie Severin. Norm Breyfogle. Carlos Ezquerra. Stan Lee. And that’s just a partial list.
What will be the biggest story in comics in 2019? Hopefully something that no one could’ve possibly predicted…
Jeff Trexler, Attorney
2019 Projects: TBA
What guilty pleasure (of any kind) are you looking forward to in 2019? The 50th Annual San Diego Comic-Con – guilty pleasure because every year i say I should stay in New York to work, but …
Who inspired you in 2018? Ashley Eckstein, who not only wrote the stellar inspirational memoir It’s Your Universe but justifiably made the annual Her Universe fashion show one of — and arguably the most — buzzed about events at Comic-Con. She’s also one of the best speakers I’ve ever seen; her book tour and the talk she gave to lawyers & designers from around the world at this year’s Fashion Law Bootcamp were an exemplary blend of inspirational uplift and practical strategic advice. And there are others in the fashion community who were especially inspiring for me this year: Douriean Fletcher, Allison Cimino, Tony Kim, Jaimie Cordero … getting to catch up with and learn from people like this at comic-cons is a big reason why I go.
The Beat's Annual Creator Survey Part 1: creators speak out on the buiggest stories of 2018 and what might be coming in 2019 Yes, it's that time of the year where The Beat quizzes a wide swath of creators, journalists, retailers and other comics people for their upcoming projects, thoughts on the past and future of the industry, and inspirations.

The Ever-Expanding Digital and Web Comic Landscape
Comic books have come a long way since the days of sitting in metal racks located in grocery stores and newsstands. Today, you can read comics from any of the big publishers, such as Dark Horse, DC, Fantagraphics, Image, or Marvel, and you can also read comic books made by the creators themselves—and some publish independently. Not only are comics available in printed form, but they’re also available digitally. Printed, on the web, or on an app? Where do you start? If you have a hard time choosing what to read and where to read it, you’re not alone, because the choices are limitless. With print and web and digital options, we now have so many comic books. (Perhaps too many.) I asked some comic book fans how they feel about digital and/or web comics, and one big take away seems to be that it’s less a matter of Where to start? and more about Where does it end?
Rich Barrett
There’s a distinction between digital comics and web comics which I think of as two different things. Digital is defined by the platform that they’re delivered on (apps like comiXology or even digital reader formats like PDFs) and web is simply a comic that is read on a website. Digital comics often work as print comics as well. A lot of the comics you can buy on comiXology are comics that are also available in print but the experience of reading them digitally can be very different either through the Guided View technology that is offered or just the differences between reading the art on the screen vs. the printed page. Webcomics, a.k.a. web comics, are really a completely different form, usually not adhering as closely to a print-friendly page size of page count although many of them do eventually get collected that way if they’re popular. Both have been game-changing for independent cartoonists and self-publishers although digital comics have offered more monetary opportunities for the creators.
That said, I tend to prefer digital comics over webcomics because I find the format of reading discrete volumes or issues at once at my own leisure easier than trying to keep up with the shorter, sporadic updates that many webcomics are hindered by (and I say this as someone who used to publish a webcomic a page at a time on a completely erratic schedule). I buy comics from comiXology and also subscribe to their comiXology Unlimited service where I can check out their comiXology Originals series which are kind of hit and miss.
I also subscribe to Marvel Unlimited which I’m a big fan of and may sign up for DC Universe when that launches. I use Hoopla through my public library which lets me read 6 graphic novels a month for free and there are a TON of great choices to read there. I occasionally will buy an independent digital comic directly from a creator’s website or sometimes I support a Kickstarter and just get the digital PDF copy of their book.
I wish that I could keep up with more webcomics because that is usually where you can discover some unique voices and up and coming talent. The entire comics industry has been influenced tremendously by webcomics over the past decade or so and if you want to see some future trends in comic storytelling, you’ll probably find them now on the web. I’ve recently been trying to follow some cartoonists that are publishing comics via Instagram which is pretty interesting. There is a lot of unique experimentation with digital formats out there, but I admit I don’t have as much time as I once did to keep up with it all.
Rich Barrett is a writer and illustrator.
Brandon Wilson
I can remember buying my earliest comics in 1981. I’d have been 10 then. Batman. She-Hulk. Spider-Woman. I still have those. I collected comics for most of the 1980s, drifting more towards Marvel and away from DC (although I remained a very loyal Batman reader). In terms of Marvel I read a little of everything but I definitely was attracted to the X-Men, the various spinoffs and the overarching Mutant Saga.
I then started reading Dark Horse Comics in the late 80s. Hard Boiled, Aliens vs Predator, Terminator. By the early 90s I was a college student and my comics consumption dried up. I didn’t come back until after the dawn of the MCU in 2008. I bought comics the old-fashioned way, going back to the comic book shop I went to in the old days. The faces behind the counter were new but I developed a rapport with them and my brief commune with them turned my second wave of comic book reading into a fairly regular thing.
Then the shop got sold and those guys disappeared. It was around this time that I decided to take the plunge and go digital since the social aspect of buying comics had been disrupted. I’d always been skeptical of reading on a tablet, and I love the feel of a book. But with comics, digital is the way to go. My middle-aged eyes truly appreciate the guided mode that zooms in on individual frames. Such a superior way to experience a story in this format. I downloaded four reader apps: Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, and Image. The majority of what I’ve purchased and downloaded is Marvel but I read Bitch Planet and Monstress for a time as well.
Digital also eliminates the need for storage which my wife is utterly delighted about.
The big change in how I read comics now is I follow writers more than characters. Mark Waid, Ta-Nahesi Coates, Gary Phillips, Kelly DeConnick are people I will read almost sight unseen. I’ve slowed down my purchasing now to one book a month. Comic books are very cyclical, you read with interest for a while and then the interest wanes. Eventually you come back and the characters are new and yet pleasantly familiar.

I find webcomics through the artists I follow on Twitter or Tumblr. A few of them host them on comic sites and some have their own domains. On Twitter, I follow @theyoungdoyler’s comic Knights-Errant. I read it on Sparkler Monthly. I enjoy the world building and societal constructs especially. It’s well researched and compelling!

On Tumblr, I follow this comic called Starward Lovers. I love the graphic style of this comic, it lends itself well to the action scenes. I think the thing that drew me in most was the pacing of the story telling. I’d always wanted to know what happened next.
I also read Black Sheep by @lirthel. The designs and world building are completely fantastical and unique. Additionally, the character acting/relationships are stellar! It’s a slice of life immersed in a fantasy world done exactly right.
One negative for me though about webcomics is that I personally find it hard to keep up with them consistently. This is mostly due to the way I keep up with them through Twitter/Tumblr update posts but also because they generally update one page at a time (at least the ones I read.) I’m someone that likes to binge whatever media I’m consuming and I end up having to reread a few pages, if not the entire chapter, before I’m able to remember all of the events.
Despite that, I try to return to them because I enjoy the storylines and character relationships because I think web comics tend to have more interesting characters/plots and take more risks. I also have a lot of respect for the artists, who write and draw and post them consistently (for free too!).
If available, I would definitely buy a physical copy of the comic as well. I try to support my favorite comics if Kickstarter campaigns are started, such as Knights-Errant. In the end I do enjoy reading comics in the physical form but I have nothing against reading them online.

“90% of everything is crap” has become a lowball figure now that we have to factor in web comics.
There’s a reason that Charles Schulz never yielded control of his Peanuts: only he could position his kids’ eyes and render their mouth line just so for maximum emotional effect. No one else could come near the subtlety of his drawing skills. Like Fred Astaire, he worked hard his whole career to make the extremely difficult appear effortless. So from an art appreciation standpoint, I have no tolerance for copy-and-paste dinosaurs.
But there have been glorious exceptions, artists with the brilliance and skills to make the web aesthetic work. I’d credit David Rees, the first breakthrough talent. His classic, post-9/11 Get Your War On used generic clip art in the exact way it was designed for: endless online repetition. And it was perfectly suited to deliver his subversive political messages in a way that would make any hard-core Situationist proud.
And there have been other landmark web-toonists with enough creative flair to master and advance the medium in marvelously unique ways. I’d put two at the top of my personal pantheon. One, Kate Beaton. Her lusciously illustrated Hark, a Vagrant was always a delectably witty treat for the eye and the mind. And Emily Horne. Her poignant photo-comic A Softer World, written by Joey Comeau, provided hauntingly beautiful, thrice weekly, zen moments.
All three of the above web comics series are either archived online or preserved in book form, but they’re gone from the net. So here I sit in my rocker, laptop in my lap, yelling at all these tediously unimaginative, visually incompetent young whipperbloggers to keep off my monitor.
Okay, seriously: I never miss Tom Gauld, the meta-Kate Beaton, on Tumblr.
And when I interviewed Peter Kuper for Print online about the digital versions of his recent books, he had a two-part answer. He told me that he felt obligated to explore the medium, “since it’s clear that this is a direction books are headed.” But he also said, “It is really striking to see the pages illuminated this way, but not worth the loss of the tactile experience of a print book.” I agree with his first answer, and take strong issue with the second.

If you’re not a hard-core print person, you need only to look at his Diario de Oaxaca on an electronic device to be awestruck by how the vividness and luminosity enlivens and enhances the artwork and the colors. This is what I consider to be an excellent example of an illuminated manuscript for the 21st-century—as someone who considers stained glass windows depicting the Stations of the Cross in churches and cathedrals to be “visual narratives,” a.k.a., comics, with roots in medieval times. There’s also Digital Comic Museum and Comic Book Plus. These are online repositories of what seem to me like innumerable public domain comic strips and books. As an historian, they’re a treasured resource. And as a hard-core comics person with an insatiable appetite, and a limited budget, they’re, well… priceless.

Najbolje inostrane serije (RECENZIJA)
Putovanja? Ljubav? Uspesi? Druženje? Zdravlje? Pokloni? Ispod, ogroman prazan prostor a onda idu ostali pačići i učenici… "The Leftovers" nije slučajno prva do prvog, Linča. Posebni najež: upotreba numere benda A-ha "Take on me". Izvor: agitpop.me "The Deuce" je naveliko obradovala tokom druge polovine 2017. Genijalno. Izvor: YouTube "Halt and Catch Fire S04". Izvor: YouTube Iako nije bio ni blizu kvaliteta druge sezone (a to će se teško dostići) "Fargo (S03)" nam je doneo neke epohalne momente: tu je ponovo Keri Kun koju znamo iz "The Leftovers", naš Goran Bogdan i njegov rusko/kozački geng, zli Varga koji ceni sovjetsku revoluciju i nezaboravne biblijske citate koje ležerno "cepa" Rej Vajz (Ray Wise) - inače u Twin Peaks igra tatu Lore Palmer u kome čuči BOB a ovde je misteriozni Wandering Jew. Autor Noa Hauli (Noah Hawley) je fan Linča, i sve nas to vraća na važnost broja Jedan na ovoj listi. "Deliver a message when the time comes, to the wicked: 'Though thou exalt thyself like the eagle; though thou make thy nest among the stars; thence will I bring thee down, saith the Lord'". Hint: Pretty in Pink. "American Vandal" je mocumentary/omaž dokumentarnom serijalu "The Keepers". "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" - I dalje sitkom broj jedan. Moram priznati, često sam tokom gledanja razmišljala koliko li svi oni smrde kad su stalno blatnjavi i neokupani :) "Pls Like" - Brutalni "mocumentary" o tome kako postati i ostati online zvezda. "Top of the lake: China Girl". "I Love Dick". Bože, bože, bože. KOLIKO je Kevin Bejkon savršen u ovoj humorističkoj mini-seriji. Pogledajte, molim vas! Izvor: YouTube "The Keepers" je dokumentarna serija o ubistvu opatice u malom američkom gradu. Emili Votson i Ben Čaplin, ljubav, opsesija, ubistvo. Osim uzbudljive jedanaeste epizode i jednog lepog ubistva, kao i korišćenja pesme "More Than This" Roxy Music tamo gde joj se najmanje nadamo, sve ostalo možemo zaboraviti. "House of Cards" serija koja je morala da se završi mnogo pre afere Kevina Spejsija. Samodovoljna do izbezumljenosti gledalaca. "The Sinner" je kažnjena niskim mestom jer lepo počne, Džesika Bil je vrlo korektna a onda zaluta u meandre bednjikavog TV filma iz osamdesetih. "Transparent" je pao najniže. Otišli su u Izrael i tamo se zaglavili u pesku nekreativnosti. Džil Solovej je morala da zna kad da kaže ćao, zdravo, kraj. A nije. CELA LISTA: 1) Twin Peaks 2) The Leftovers 3) The Handmaids Tale 4) The Deuce 5) Halt and Catch Fire 6) Dark 7) Fargo 8) Feud 9) Stranger Things 10) Back 11) Big Little Lies 12) American Vandal 13) Godless 14) Brooklyn Nine Nine 15) Taboo 16) Pls Like 17) Billions 18) Will and Grace 19) Top of the Lake: China Girl 20) Narcos 21) Brockmire 22) I Love Dick 23) The Keepers 24) Comrade Detective 25) Ozark 26) Apple Tree Yard 27) Loudermilk 28) Room 104 29) Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams 30) Mr. Mercedes 31) Manhunt: Unabomber 32) The Missing 33) Mindhunter 34) The Americans 35) House of Cards 36) The Sinner Izvor: MONDO Let's block ads! (Why?)

Ten Questions with Emilie
It’s Emilie’s turn to answer our ten questions! I’m loving how practical her answers are in question number 7, and look how cute she was as a 10-year-old! Here are Emilie’s answers:
1. Describe your ten-year-old self. Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give that ten-year-old girl?
When I was ten I had just started high school and was biking something like 7 kilometres with my friends to school — funny to think of that now. I was actually also very small, and as I was growing up in Germany, all the kids were huge compared to me so I made up for that by being cheeky and a little bit of a loud mouth. ; ) We lived in a village so we would spend all day in the nearby woods and fields playing in the summer or on the village pond skating in the winter. It was awesome. The little downside was that my mother was in and out of hospital with cancer at that time so my brother and I were very independent and helped out a lot at home. We were expected to cook and clean, and generally knew how to take care of ourselves.
I think they are three sayings I have learnt over the years: “start as you mean to go on”, “always treat others as you would like to be treated yourself” and “hold on tightly, let go lightly”. I think I have often repeated these to myself and used them as life guidelines. So I guess I would give these as advice to my 10-year-old self and I might have done some things differently…. but I am who I am because of the experiences I have had – so I guess it has all worked out in the end…
2. If you could have 10 extra minutes every morning, what would you do? Sleep in? Do yoga? Spend more time choosing an outfit?
Stay in bed with a coffee and a book. It is my ultimate luxury!
3. You arrive to the school gates 10 minutes early to pick up your kids. You pick up your phone. What do you do (emails? Instagram? Pinterest? games?)?
I quickly look at mails and make whatever is the most urgent phone call I need to make!
4. You win the lotto of £10,000. How do you spend it?
Travel, and just like Esther, take all of us on a little bit of a holiday to our surrogate home in Byron Bay!
5. You have ten minutes to prepare a meal for your family. What do you make?
Scrambled eggs, salad, cheese and bread.
6. You have ten hours on an airplane ALL BY YOURSELF with a library of every movie and TV series ever released. What do you watch?
I would watch every new movie that had come out lately, drama, comedy or documentary. I actually get super excited about being on a long flight just because of that. I still haven’t seen Big Little Lies!
7. Aliens are invading your house and you have time to grab 10 items (not including people). What do you grab?
Gosh this is hard as it really depends on the type of aliens invading my house! 1) my phone 2) my wallet 3) our passports (I am after all quite a practical person) 4) coats 5) books for everyone (we need to wait out the aliens) 6) blankets 7) pocket knives (I actually often have one of these in my handbag for picnics – my grandfather taught me that) – might me useful for an alien invasion 8) matches 9) a portable loudspeaker 10) a tent
8. You can spend ten minutes with any famous person. Who would you pick?
A friend of mine, Simon Kuper, just did an awesome interview with the author Judith Kerr, whose book “When Hitler Stole my Pink Bunny” and its sequels had a massive impact on me as a child as it was the first book I had ever read about the Holocaust. Growing up in Germany, that was big. I think a lot of people of my generation in Germany read that same book. She seems like such an interesting woman, with such a fascinating life, so I would love to spend 10 minutes with her.
9. What is something about your current self that would surprise the person you were ten years ago?
I don’t think I would ever believe that I would be living in Paris, having had all the experiences I have had! Life is so unpredictable!!
10. What do you hope your life will look like ten years from now?
I hope it is going to be full of adventures and experiences. By adventures I don’t only mean massive trips (though I do love those) but also adventures with everyone I love family and friends. I feel like they are going to be a very interesting 10 years. ; )
