100 Memorable Skating Programs - 66-70
I've been working on this list for the past couple of years. It started out as my top ten favorite programs, but as a fan of over twenty-four years who has seen hundreds of skating programs over the years, ten didn't seem quite enough, so I bumped it to twenty-five. That twenty-five then expanded to fifty, then to a hundred. Um...oops?
Anyway, some rules I kept in mind while making this list:
1) Only senior-level competitive programs from the 1993-1994 season and later are eligible. Yes, there are a few amazing programs from before then that I love as well, but I wanted to stick to the years that I was actively a fan.
2) Each skater only gets mentioned once on the list, unless there's a partner switch involved. (Hey, Aljona!) I could probably fill this list alone with my favorite Wagner/P. Chan/Weaver Poje/Davis White/Asada/Takahashi/Browning/Anissina Peizerat programs, but variety is the spice of life.
3) Choice of music is also not repeated, either! Y'all don't need a list of fifty amazing "Phantom of the Opera" programs, do y'all? ... I didn't think so.
By the way, this list is mostly about the programs themselves, which is why I've tried to note the choreographers whenever possible. If there are any mistakes or you happen know the name of a choreographer I'm missing, I would love to know!
I’ll be posting five a day. Today, we have 66-70!
66. Elizabeth Punsalan/Jerod Swallow "Astor Piazolla medley" (Igor Shpilband) 1998 Olympics - It's such a shame that ice dance was so politicized back in the 6.0 days. As Americans, Elizabeth and Jerod never had a chance, but this gorgeous tango free dance of theirs was just as good as the medalists.

67. Denis Ten "The Artist" (Lori Nichol) 2013 Worlds - I had something different written about this program before Denis's senseless murder, but what I wrote no longer seems appropriate. So, instead, I will just say that I’ll always remember this brilliant skate -- Denis Ten at his absolute best.

68. Ross Miner "Somebody to Love/Love of My Life/Crazy Little Thing Called Love" (Lori Nichol and Jamie Isley) 2018 Nationals - It's a shame that Ross didn't make the Olympic team after winning a very well-deserved silver medal at Nationals, but, wow, was this skate amazing or what? Definitely the skate of his life and the perfect way to (probably) end his competitive career. It was such a wonderful program as well!
youtube
69. Mariah Bell "Chicago" (Rohene Ward) 2016 Skate America - I always feel a little breathless after watching Mariah skate this program because it's just so fast-paced and jammed with content! It's super fun and sassy, though. The little heart sign she makes after one of her spins on the word "Hart" is cheesy, but adorable, and the footwork has great flapper-esque style!
youtube
70. Kim Lucine "Mario Bros." (Nikolai Morosov) 2014 Worlds - He represented a nation without any real tradition in figure skating (Monaco) and didn't have the technical difficulty to even pretend to compete with the big guns, but, gosh, wasn't this program one of the most charming, fun, and creative programs you've ever seen? The organizers of Worlds must have thought so, too, since how often do you see the skater in 29th place invited to preform in the gala? Pretty much never (unless they’re a hometown skater). He never reached a Worlds podium, but he definitely left us with a program that I know I'll never forget.

Elizabeth Punsalan and Jerod Swallow 1994 OD “Rhumba”
music: recurdos by brave combo.
“They skate tonight with very heavy hearts, a tragedy in the family still weighing on them. Two weeks ago last Friday, Liz’s father Dr. Ernesto Punsalan was murdered. Her young brother Riccardo has been charged with the crime... Liz says this is really the easy part. Skating is therapeutic.”

Elizabeth Punsalan and Jerod Swallow 1998 FD “Tango”
music: oblivion and soledad by gidon kremer.
“Elizabeth Punsalan spent the Lillehammer Games in mourning, practices and the ice dancing competition the only relief from her overwhelming grief and pain.
Her father, Ernesto Punsalan, was dead, fatally stabbed by her younger brother only days before she and her husband-partner Jerod Swallow were supposed to leave for the Olympics. Four years later, the pain has eased.
They decided that this time, the Olympics would be about them, a chance to celebrate their eight years together. They came determined to enjoy every moment, and they have.” - The Washington Post, February 1998.
