belkar has been much better recently but sometimes when elan gets really dumb you can see him holding back his 1 level of barbarian

is anyone else obsessed with this panel? like, given the usual perspective of this strip I feel like it really captured just how fascinated Elan is with them and also how alien they are

rereading order of the stick (again), and greyiew is only in a few comics so far but man do i love this nihilistic wolf
#order of the stick#yes i know it hasn't been terribly long since i last reread it but#i've been desperately trying to get my dnd group to read it and i just had to go back and go through it again#and again. the first 250 strips or so are pretty cringey and there's aspects even later that make me wince#but fuck once you get to the soul splice arc you've read the last bad oots comic#''utterly dwarfed'' is fucking *incredible*#i am both incredibly ready and incredibly not ready for the climax#i bet durkon will live and i'm sure haley elan and roy will#o-chul i'm leaning ''survives'' and lien i think will make it#minrah will probably make it. i bet serini is doomed.#belkar is obviously doomed#i'm 100% on the fence about v#like straight-up 50/50 both ''live'' and ''die'' serve strong narrative purposes#but as to how it all plays out?#v still owes the fiends 23 minutes meaning the order can't rely on them to back them up in the clutch#so on the one hand it would make the most sense for them to hit as hard and fast as possible#but on the other - if the fiends *don't* call in the debt for their own purposes#they will have burned out their most powerful member too soon#burlew is too clever and too good a writer for a traditional battle scene as the climax#more is going to happen. *something* massive is going to shift#serini turns? redcloak turns on xykon and gets eaten by the mitd?#i can't tell! i'm going to flip tf out whenever it does happen though#hnggh this has been 20 years in the making and the climaxes have not failed a single note yet#burlew is goddamned *good* at rising action and nailing the climax of a story arc#it's gonna be fucking incredible ugh

Order of the Stick and Familicide
Vaarsuvius, by casting the Familicide spell, killed Elan's stepmother Penelope. We know this. It is canon. Vaarsuvius themself also noted that, if Penelope had borne a child by Tarquin, Vaarsuvius would've killed Elan's half-sibling. Horrifying, yes. But everyone's analysis seems to stop there, and nobody seems to have noticed something potentially worse:
If Penelope had had Tarquin's baby, Vaarsuvius would have killed Elan.
"Every living creature that directly shares your bloodline is dead. Every living creature that is directly related to any of those creatures is also dead. Anyone who could possibly make a claim to be part of your family is gone now." - Vaarsuvius "I have scourged the Western Continent of humans whose only sin was falling in love with a mysterious scarlet-tressed stranger! And I have extinguished their own family lines as well! Countless parents, siblings, and children, dead--down to the last cousin." - Also Vaarsuvius
We know from the annihilation of the Draketooth family that the spell does not stop at a single remove. It kills you, then it kills people who are related to you, then it kills people who are related to them, then it kills people who are related to them, etc., and it doesn't seem to stop. If it has a limit, we don't know what it is (though it clearly has one, as humanity has not been rendered extinct). It's been shown to kill the parents of the children the Draketooths had, meaning it goes backwards up ancestral lines; obviously it goes down, for the children as well.
So let's say Penelope has a baby by Tarquin. Penelope gets hit with Familicide from her first child. The spell jumps to her baby, then to the baby's father... then to the baby's father's children, i.e. Elan and Nale.
By this point in the story, V had become rather fond of Elan, seeing him as something of a student in the Arcane. More than that, Haley is V's friend. How would V have reacted to realizing that they so casually and callously killed their own student... and the love of their best friend's life?

Another thing that makes me hopeful for Redcloak's potential for positive growth is the fact that his confrontation with Durkon happened so early in the story (i.e. right at the beginning of book 7).
If you compare this with say, Elan and Tarquin, and you see that the big reveal about Tarquin’s delusional mental state comes right at the end of his narrative. He flies off the handle, is appropriately punished and left standing impotently in the desert. The story leaves him no time for reflection and positive growth (I doubt he’s capable of it).
Redcloak’s flaws have now been more thoroughly exposed (for the particular benefit of those who never read Start of Darkness) but Rich chose to do it right in the early stages of the final installment. This leaves room to take him in a different direction….
(Here’s me desperately hoping)

Belkar's epic speech about how people in power almost always choose status quo over anything beneficial to those not in power because inevitably those in power want to cling to that power in the comic that literally categorizes people into Lawful or Chaotic and almost invariably characterizes people who are Lawful as More Good than people who are Chaotic

I'm back at uni this week, but still managed to find the time to create something paying tribute to the 20th anniversary of The Order of the Stick! This comic has genuinely been so important to me over the years, so I needed to commemorate the occasion.
