Ali al-Quahtani is so oblivious to all the forces around him and i love that. The scene (i can't remember where exactly) when Muntadhir tells him that he 100% looks like he was staging a coup and Ali being like *shocked pikachu face*... pure gold
YESSSS THAT WAS IN BOOK 1 TOO I LOVE THAT SCENE!!! Ali is like "what's wrong bro why are you mad at me :((" and Muntadhir is like "idk man maybe my little brother, the leader of my armies, who is way more beloved by the solders than me, was caught funding a rebel group and participating in their armed uprisings against the crown performed using weapons from the palace, after his mother's side of the family (which we don't share and who are notorious for seizing power) was also caught funding that same group, and now he is refusing to arrest anyone for those crimes" and Ali goes "NOOOOOOO WHAT???? DD: NO!!!!!!!! I WAS JUST A BIT STUPID I SLIPPED TT.TT IT WAS AN HONEST MISTAKE I'LL DO ANYTHING TO PROVE IT TT.TT" and the best part is. He isn't lying. But then the rebels are like "yea lol we were totally trying to stage a coup against his brother and make him king he just wasn't aware lolollololololololol"

What did you think about the river of silver?
MY BELOVED <3<3<3<3<3 It made me feel Insane while reading it quite a few times. SO many of the stories talk about the EXACT THINGS I craved more of in the trilogy - Nahri and Muntadhir just hanging out and trying to navigate their horrible marriage, the al Qahtani siblings as kids, Hatset and Ghassan at the beginning of it all, Manizheh and Rustam's no good horrible life and siblinghood, Ali doing epic hero monster fighting while being his own awkward self, AQISA AND ZAYNAB FALLING IN LOVE HELLO (that one had me scream out I K N E W I T at the top of my lungs), and the absolutely amazing wonderful heartwarming water version of the wedding mask. I am 1000% rereading as soon as I'm done with EoG

I am THIS CLOSE to buying the whole Daevabad trilogy and i need you to give me the final push to actually do it :3 So. Tell me your favorite thing about it and convince me!
Convincing you to buy a whole series you have never read is not something I would want to do, but I CAN convince you to read it or give it a chance and still feel good about it. SO here we go: it has one of my fav "messed up family who all love each other but also find themselves on opposite sides of a conflict" trope examples. The Al Qahtanis, rulers of Daevabad, are deliciously dramatic and problematic and messed up, and we get to see their journey as Prince Alizayd, the youngest child and the male protag of the series, grows old enough to join their games. Seeing them all loving each other while also hurting each other in various ways that range from petty to world-changing just makes me go UGHGHHGHGHGHGHGHGHGH. Hope you have fun if you pick it up~

hello there! I started reading the daevabad trilogy awhile ago after seeing you talk about it a bunch, I absolutely loved the first book but I am struggling with reading Dara’s chapters in the second and I’m wondering if he becomes less frustrating?
Omg this is like something past me has sent to current me. It gets a bit better in book 3 but then it also gets worse and it just gets worse and he ends up one of the most annoying misses I've read T.T HOWEVER, all the other plotlines only get better with time, so I hope you will be able to enjoy the books again!

Are there Muslim characters in City of Brass? Sorry, it's just some of the names sound Muslim, and I'm just a Muslim who needs respresentation lol. The way you describe the series makes it sound really interesting!
Yep, everyone is either Muslim or of a fantasy religion, and the story is a journey across 18-19th century Middle East/Africa! The setting is so damn detailed and good, the author is an American Muslim but has a degree in Middle Eastern history AND is a history nerd and it shows, it shows so so so much. I hope you like it!

I haven't read the Daveabod trilogy but I'm Arab and when I saw that lion named Mishmish I was like hehehehe :3. We had an orange kitty named mishmish too. (If it's not obvious or already explained in the book mishmish means peach)
it’s funny that the lions name is mishmish, mishmish is a REALLY popular cat name, in Arabic it means apricot, when my mom lived in Egypt she had two cats, one name mishmish and another named mishmisha
HIHIHI ADORABLEE!!!! And yes, the MC is Egyptian and her native tongue is Arabic and she called the lion after his fav food! And now I learn it is also a cat joke, perfect

Mkay sO —
I read The City of Brass because of your recommendation, and I loved it! I’m excited to continue with the series and see where Ali’s storyline goes. However Nahri’s arc… and Dara himself… well I just thought I’d share the transcript of my goodreads updates as I think they capture how frustrated I was 😀:
31%: I like Ali
I like Nahri too
But I’m over the “simp for thousand year old man you just met” train
33%: Why is she so attached to Dara already?
And what’s this “all we’ve been through” she’s talking about
I really AM over the trope of falling for the hot mysterious older guy right away because he saves you a couple times. Like girls and other people can definitely function past acknowledging someone’s attractive, it doesn’t consume their whole being and become love right away, if at all
37%: And what makes him LONG for her?? What does he see in her that attracts him? Like I see why *I* like her but not how he would realistically long for her
37%, again: WHY IS SHE KISSING HIM
and why am I acting surprised 😐
37%, AGAIN: WERE THEY JUST ABOUT TO HAVE SEX??? BRO
You’ve known this man a mOnth, and I see no reason to be attracted to him other than the trademark trope, but really?? Sex??? After your first kiss??? Newsflash, authors, a first kiss with someone doesn’t always (in fact almost never does) lead to sex
62%: I hope Nahri ends up with Ali at the end [of the series]🤞🏼 I won’t be upset if they just end up as friends, but PLEASE anything but her with Dara 😩
90%: I’m liking Ali a lot and I just want Dara to stay dead tbh idk why Nahri is so enamored with him
94%: Is she so obsessed with him??? That she would break down for days??? Harming herself constantly??? Just to get him back???? wHAT
94%, again: “I can’t do this, not without him”
GIRL WHAT
YOUVE BEEN DOING THIS WITHOUT HIM FOR MOST OF THE BOOK
AND BEFORE THAT MOST OF YOUR LIFE
WHY ARE YOU RELYING ON HIM
No like seriously this book hasn’t done much to actually *show* me how connected she got to him, it’s just *telling* me that she apparently loves him after a month in-universe time but a couple of chapters book time
SAMEEE!!! My notes I kept while reading basically said the same thing. Dara and Nahri's relationship was def the worst thing about those books. I loved Nahri and then she met him and started acting like an idiot and I didn't start liking her again properly until book 3. Like, I don't have a problem with a woman falling in love with an ancient being!!!! I don't!!!! But I need to believe it, I need to see why. But this was just based on physical attraction and chemistry- which, again, is totally okay, but please don't pretend it is a relationship that would make her believe he would be her companion forever. Or at least make her see how stupid and naiive it was to get attached to him so strongly after being offered the bare minimum. And the fact that the ending of that book was so muddled but expected me to feel a certain way........ what the hell. So Dara forces her to join him, she is furious with him and says she would have never done it had he not threatened Ali, he justly pays for it, and,..... suddenly she is no longer angry???? Like????? Suddenly it's Ali's fault and not Dara's for being an asshole who doesn't care about her choices or feelings?? Her arc is about AGENCY, she is trying to reclaim power over herself and be free in any way she can. And they TRY TO MAKE ME BELIEVE DARA WAS SOMEONE SHE COULD LOVE??? WHO HAS BEEN FORCING HER TO DO WHAT HE TELLS HER TO SINCE THE BEGINNING????????????????? Bruh I just. The author wrote the perfect books for me except that part which I do my best to ignore and focus on Ali being a great character and how cool Nahri becomes later on. Have fun~~~

You're telling me there's a winged lion in these books named mishmish?????
THERE CERTAINLY IS!!! He likes peaches more than anything. The MC gets to fly around with him and cuddle him. He is also really smart and helpful since he is a sacred animal. Mishmish rules

HOW COULD I NOTTTTT he spent several hours not even noticing they were there, what an Ali TM thing to do. And then, in the fashion only siblings possess, Zaynab and Muntadhir enter at just the right time. Love that trio so much
