There are a number of aspects that always captivate me when I look at a painting. When I saw The Bull :Version 5, by Edward Holland, these slowly emerged. Not a very large piece, about 11″ x 8″, but so much detail, symmetry, geometry, and text! The piece comes off as having two sections. The top section, looks like you opened a book. Immediately you see both sides of the book, yet the left and right sides are divided and very different from each other. Your eyes are drawn immediately to the left, which from a distance looks like a map, with lines, stars, and what appears to be an actual map underneath. The right side also is layered, yet the layers are muted in color and and there is no specific details  like on the other side. You want to take a closer look. As you come closer you begin to see layers. What lies beneath these layers?  there is print text, an actual map. These are layered, painted, layered... a process which has evolved. The bottom portion is beautiful, using colored paint, spanning the colors of the rainbow. The underlying text of the bottom portion adds a layer of mystery and bring it all together! One detail that stands out is the border, especially how it allows you to see the layering. Also notice one of the corners is textured, as opposed to the others. This piece makes you think of the sky and its mythological characters. The layout evokes depth.
