Personally spinning is always the easiest to do when my brain isnt working.

Everyone should learn basic crochet or knitting, because there will come a point when you are elderly. And being able to create blankets and hats, little bits of art that you leave behind, not only bonds you to your family when you are gone, but it gives you a way to contribute when you can no longer wrangle the cows or harvest the garden.

And there may even come a point where you no longer remember who or where you are. But you know what you do remember? You remember how to crochet. I worked in a nursing home and there were so many women with dementia who did not remember that they could knit, but if you gave them needles and yarn, their hands would remember and it would surprise them.

And instead of those women fretting because they didn't know what was happening, they then lost themselves in the meditative flow of knitting by focusing their attention and immersing themselves in the present moment. Which of course alleviates stress and promotes mental well-being. So you don't even have to know how to create a sweater, just knitting or crocheting a simple square helps you.

okay tumblr pals, i am crowd-sourcing a hobby/activity

i am not someone who just casually picks up handicrafts and i'm especially not someone who's naturally good at them, but i do like having things to do with my hands that aren't playing games on my phone while i watch my shows. i spent the last couple of years working on a hand-sewn braided rug but now i've finished that and my only other project idea requires a sewing machine which i do not have (yet) (and also working on a sewing machine isn't great for a while watching things craft)

i am interested in: interesting hand-sewing projects, potentially learning how to embroider, visible mending, other stuff if there's whole categories of crafts and hobbies that i'm forgetting

i like: having something i can use or wear at the end, not spending tons of money on crafts

anyway please send me suggestions of things i might be overlooking or resources or whatever! i am looking for inspiration! ❤️

I've been crocheting some monsters! There's a kelpie, a cockatrice, a makara and a baku.

I've even got a shop to sell them on etsy, now, although I'm still figuring out how to do things there.

So I've gotten into more crafting stuff recently - @binchickencrafts if you want to see the results of me fucking about with dyeing/spinning/weaving/crochet/whatever the hell else I get my hands on - and part of learning a new craft is, obviously, reading about it and watching stuff on it.

And the funniest thing is that every single fibre craft, sooner or later (usually sooner) is inevitably like:

"do you find [specific craft thing] difficult? simply Do Not, hope that helps!"

do you find beating your warp evenly problematic? simply be better at beating your warp :)

do you find tension difficult to control? just control your tension better!

do you find getting enough twist into your ply difficult? here's a helpful tip! don't suck at it.

it is so fucking funny, every single fiber craft like 'are you having problems following these instructions or doing this task? that's a skill issue. suck less. now draw the rest of the owl, motherfucker.'
