Why is FanFiction Vilified?

Seriously? I just watched a Youtube video ‘teaching’ how to not write your novel the same way you write fanfiction.  Lots of things like avoiding tropes, excessive language tags, action tags, too much backstory, etc.  

This got me thinking, why is a story that ‘reads like fanfiction’ a bad thing?  Fanfiction is a booming thing right now.  There are tons of fanfics that are as good or better than most modern novels.  Note, I said most, not all. 

I haven’t read a romance as good as @missviolethunter ‘s Counterpoint and Equilibrium or @theempressar ‘s Soulmates, or a young adult novel as well done as @gia-is-online ‘s Boy Toy,  or sweet escapism as enjoyable as @thatsweetbobbyfacetho ‘s Peaches, in a very long time.  And many, many more.  @libertinepast ‘s star crossed lovers make you want them to if not get together, at least find a peace that propels them both to a better place.  The same goes for @storyshark2005 Midlife Crisis (sorry, I can’t remember the whole title!). BetaHawk (Can’t remember your tag here, someone please tag him) has opened up the life of Hawk for us.  @dream-beyond-the-fantasy has given us a whole new perspective on the sweet Jimmy.  The fandom as a whole made me love LawRusso, Bonny, Dutchiel, Johnny/Carmen, and many other ships I would have never rooted for.   AND THAT’S JUST THE WRITERS IN THE QUIVER!!!!!

Every fandom I search has amazing writers who broach so many unexplored ideas and options, so why wouldn’t you want to write like a ‘fanfic writer’?  Other than needing original characters, apparently, the fanfiction format is working.  

If they need proof of this, what is the last adult book series that people lost their minds over? That’s right!  A series that started as FANFICTION!!!!!

In conclusion, don’t be ashamed of your writing.  It is awesome and so what if you use ‘too many tags’ fall into escapism tropes, or even create Mary Sues.  I haven’t bought a novel in longer than I care to admit, but I read fanfiction nearly every day and I’m sure I’m not the only one.

💛: what is the title based on?

The title is based on the song:  Eye in the Sky by Alan Parson’s Project

The sun in your Eyes Made some of the lies worth believing

💔: give a brief character bio of your 3-5 MCs

Johnny:  Type A, Sociopath slowly losing control of all of his “followers”  Is currently trying to re-evaluate his life choices and knows he really wants to go after “The One that Got Away” 

Daniel:  Once naive, but still trusting, young man who fell instantly, blindly in love with Johnny and all of his charms and was disillusioned when the truth finally came out.  He has run away with Bobby and claims that he loves him, but just how much? 

Bobby:  Very sweet and sensitive, smart and caring.  He doesn’t want to see Daniel hurt the way he was.  He loves Daniel with all of his heart the first person he ever really felt that way for.  He knows he’s fighting a losing battle.  But he doesn’t stop trying. 

Dutch:  Johnny’s right hand man/and F-buddy.  He doesn’t mind being used as long as he knows he’s on Johnny’s mind.  He doesn’t want to be replaced.  He fought hard for his position.  He knows that LaRusso has worked his way into Johnny’s heart and that’s very dangerous for Dutch.  What will he do to get rid of him once and for all?

The re-match/showdown between Johnny and Bobby.  Bobby is not going to take another beat down and he’s going to fight for the man he loves.

My guess on the Cobra Kai/Karate Kid Fandom Ships

Supercarrier: fandom flagship.  Everybody and their dog ships it.  The fandom is glutted with artwork and fic.  You cannot escape this ship.

LawRusso

Dreadnought: massively popular.  Nearly everybody ships it.  You can, with dedication, in theory, reach the end of the AO3 archive for the ship’s tag, but it’ll take a long time.

Johnny/Carmen

Cruiser: pretty popular ship.  Not everyone ships it, but everyone knows about it.  Has a good amount of fic/art, and probably multiple ask blogs.

Sam/Miguel

Frigate: just plain popular.  Feels like it could use more fanworks.  New people to the fandom might not know about it, but they’ll stumble across it sooner rather than later.

Mobby

Gunboat: bit of a rarepair.  It might have an ask blog or two.  A couple big name fans ship it.  Probably only takes a few weeks to get through the entire AO3 backlog, and one new fic gets added during that time.

Amoush

Tugboat: rarepair.  Almost never seen except as a side pairing to a more popular ship.  You can usually get through everything on AO3 in a matter of days.  You’ve forgotten what it is to be picky about what you read.

Hawk/Demetri – Season 1

Rowboat: less than a dozen people ship it.  You all know each other.  You exist in an endless cycle of the same five people desperately producing art and fic and one person who constantly contributes headcanons.

Canoe: you are one of maybe three people who ship it, and there’s a not-insignificant chance you’ve never encountered those other two hypothetical shippers.  You spend your days paddling furiously in hopes of keeping the ship afloat, dreaming of the day you upgrade to a rowboat so you can finally rest.

Dutchiel/  Bonny / Bobby/Daniel / Tommy/Susan / Adult Johnny/Ali / Johnny/Amanda
