It is nice seeing pictures like this of Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson aka the Duke and Duchess of Windsor despite the fact their entire relationship caused a rift with his family from them refusing to accept her because she was a twice divorced American who the people would never accept as Queen that led to him abdicating the throne for “the woman I love” which caused his brother and second son Albert to assume the throne as King George VI which paved the eye for his eldest daughter and heiress presumptive Elizabeth to become Queen upon her father’s death in 1952. It was also wonderful that they were able to make peace with Elizabeth to allow Wallis to be buried with him in the royal graveyard surrounded by their family and other royalty. They really did have a wonderful love story that ended with his death at the age of 77 on May 28th, 1972 only for her to follow 14 years later with her death on April 24th, 1986. Have You Ever Had It Blue "The possession of beautiful things is thrilling to me,” - Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor. When the Duke and Duchess of Windsor where in Paris they lived at 4 Route du Champ d’Éntraînement. The edifice was originally designed as a summer home for famed urban planner Georges-Eugéne Haussmann back in the mid-1800s. It would become an event venue and a home for Charles de Gaulle - before coming under the Windsors' purview in 1952. The Duchess soon put her own stamp on the building with the help of Stéphane Boudin a legendary interior designer who would go on to help Jackie Kennedy with some rooms in the ‘White House’. He'd also assist with the renovation of the Duke and Duchess's home in the Parisian suburbs ‘Le Moulin de la Tuilerie’. At ‘Villa Windsor’ Boudin created a swirl of French and English aristocratic styles. Eighteenth-century panelling, ”Wallis blue" painted framed treasures like a Venetian Rococo console table and Japanese screen (purported to be a gift from Emperor Hirohito). Simpson also added her own touches, including copious sketches, photographs and portraits of her many pugs; pug-themed trinkets also abounded. When ‘Vogue’ photographer Horst P. Horst went to shoot the home in 1963, he seemed impressed most of all by its pristine condition. "It is hard to believe that there can ever have been an interior more surpassingly clean, where crystal was more genuinely scintillating and porcelain more luminous, or where wood and leather, polished to the consistency of precious stone, could more truthfully be said to shine.” It was in this environment that the Windsors hosted their famous dinner parties. This weekend is the 86th anniversary of when King Edward VIII signed his Instrument of Abdication so he could marry Wallis Simpson after being told by the Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin that she would never be accepted by the people of England as Queen given that she was a twice divorced American woman thus making him His Royal Highness the Duke of Windsor and her the Duchess of Windsor despite the fact his brother the now King George VI refused to grant her the title Her Royal Highness. With her death on September 8th, Queen Elizabeth II was the last person alive who had any memory of that historical event which changed her life forever as a 10 year girl because she went from being Princess Elizabeth of York to being Princess Elizabeth, heiress presumptive and first in line to the throne upon the accession of her father to the throne.
