I'm late asking this but what was the best and worst of the Progs and Meg in 2023?
I'm late replying but here we go!
Tumblr media
For Dredd in the progs, I really enjoyed the short stories. THE NIGHT SHIFTER, SHRINE, FLUSHER and DISCIPLES OF DEATH were all favorites, although I admit that last one was mostly because of the cute Scottish goth girl.
Other than Dredd, I liked THE OUT, THE ORDER, DURHAM RED, the BATTLE ACTION crossover thing, FERAL AND FOE, DEADWORLD and BLADERS. I especially liked ROGUE TROOPER (I'm a sucker for Ennis), VOID RUNNERS (Boo Cook keeps getting weirder and I love it) and AZIMUTH (gorgeous art, intriguing story, and one of those classic 2000AD "You thought it was a new series but NOOOO!" twists that I really dig).
I didn't really like ENEMY EARTH, I think the art just doesn't fit the premise. And JOE PINEAPPLES should've been by all accounts a cool fun heavy metal last goodbye, but it turned into a weird meandering bunch of nonsense (with some cowardly anti-vax shit thrown in for good measure). LOWBORN HIGH and PORTALS AND BLACK GOO both had the same problem for me: strong, very British premises that don't go as far with the Britishness as I'd like them to. And DEVIL'S RAILROAD, I really wanted to like it but it just kinda lost steam very early on.
The big mehhhh of the year was the end of HERSHEY, though. I tried my best to meet it halfway and to its credit it did deliver some cool panels and nice pages, but in my eyes, it really squandered the last chance for Hershey as a character to present her side of her relationship with Dredd, to leave him with any kind of nugget of character development. It didn't do nearly enough with what I think is years and years of truly compelling relationship work and all the great Simon Fraser art in the world can't fix that.
I still bought a print of that one cover tho'.
Tumblr media
For the MEG, I liked almost everything. STORM WARNING, SURFER, DREADNOUGHTS, LAWLESS (fan-fucking-tastic last chapters), MEGA CITY 2099, all good stuff. I also enjoyed the shorter Dredds in the second half of the year, like RATINGS WAR and FITTING THE DESCRIPTION, but ONE-EYED JACKS... I dunno, neat premise but it went on a bit too long and wasn't super exciting either. Didn't really grab me. Same with Dark Judges.
That said, the most important 2000AD thing in 2023 for me was not in the prog or in the meg. It was here:
Tumblr media
Molcher's I AM THE LAW is a monumental book, one of the most thorough if not THE most thorough look at Dredd in its context. It's also heavy as all drokk, a real gutwrencher of a book, the kind of shit you can't read more than one and a half chapter without getting utterly depressed, ravenously angry, or both. It's a bleak, tough book but also a necessary one. That it's an official Rebellion product, to me, serves as a line in the sand, a very explicit statement about how they perceive Dredd. In a time where companies are running over themselves to claim their works are "not political" and "only want to entertain", Rebellion publishing Molcher's titanic work and advertising it next to their Case Files collections is something worthy of respect.
(Also, I may be a little biased on account of being in the Special Thanks for the book...)

the kids of the neighbourhood were fierce, not street-fierce but upper-class snots who ran in packs and clawed down your skin with their fingernails.
i mostly watched them from afar and tried to join in with their games occasionally but they hated me. they stole my shit. one time this one ringleader kid, an absolutely horrible girl called louise, concocted a plan where two kids asked if i could come out to play. once i reached the end of my driveway, i was pounced on by vicious, screaming children. they'd gathered the entire neighbourhood's worth of kids to hide and jump out at me and chase me. then louise claimed that because i'd said it was an "ambush" and she "didn't know what an ambush was", it never happened.
fear, sometimes, is the people in your house. sometimes, it's the people that assault you every time you step out onto the street.
though i was reviled by most of the kids my age (mostly for being the kind of kid who knew words like "reviled", or "follicle", or "bestiary"), there were a few times when i felt well enough accepted into the loose community of creatures who shared my territory. always it was with the boys. i'm afab and at the time had long curly blonde hair and i hated it. i just wanted to wear sonic tshirts and chill.
i hung out a lot with a kid called lewis. he was from australia and had a neat OC surrounding this plush dolphin he had but then he got too old for it and i felt sad. i wanted to keep talking to the dolphin. he also had a nes and all the cool mario shit, like sticker books. when lewis's parents kicked us off the nes and told us to go play outside, we'd play at being mario and luigi. i got really into it, got a red cap and customised it with ears made out of felt. made a raccoon tail to wear sticking out of the back of my pants. that was my furry awakening.
he was a good kid, chill. but as he got older he felt like he couldn't hang out with make-believing "girls" anymore. he got more into his friendship with this other kid, mark, who had a mega drive (sega genesis). hated that kid he was a dick. according to my mum he punched me in the back and left a scar but i don't remember it, even though i can feel the scar still. i tried to read judge dredd thanks to his stupid "drokk!" shirt but i could never get into it, though i like the concept of a cop satire.
we were no more than 11. the balmy summers went on, me dreaming of videogames. i don't know what he dreamt of.
i wish i could go back in time and tell him i was a make-believing boy. not that it would matter, not that we were the kind of people who would understand.

Many have tried to mimic this design over the years. It’s quite intricate and very hard to produce. I first made this design for a great customer @drokk. He’s a great guy who believed in my abilities from very early on! The final episode of Wait, What, the comics podcast I’ve listened to for more than a decade.  I kept listening even as my interest in comics cratered in a lot of ways, or at least mutated significantly. I just liked hearing those two guys talk to each other, whether it was about something I knew about, or some other thing. Both are still very present online, so it’s not like they’re amongst the dead or need to be eulogized.  But I enjoyed their podcast and its ending will leave a little gap there for me...
But now that the podcast is over... it’s finally safe to say... Steve Englehart’s New Guardians-- no plan to read it; I think I’m good; going to skip that one.  Hahaha, and they can’t do anything about it because their podcast is gone!  It’s a town without law anymore, loot everything!

((Session 43 is wrapped!))
Everyone was running a little late tonight so we started late, but that’s okay bc I’m still trying to round up all my scattered thoughts and lore for tonight.
My players immediately went places I wasn’t prepared for them to go. So. Lots of stuff tonight was improv and I didn’t have time to write things down as we went, so let’s hope I can remember it all.
Since we focused on Lex’s quest last session, with assists from Ena, Asahi, and Thiori, we’re focusing on what Sir Carl Jaeger and Bagelby were doing while everyone else was wrangling goats last session.
After schmoozing with a bunch of nobles, Sir Carl led Wayne and Zayne away from the crowds and sat them down to apologize for not properly explaining the adoption thing to them before it was announced so publicly.
It was explained that Sir Carl knows at least a little about the twins from their travels together so far; their father’s death, their mother’s disappearance, their abandoned training for the Griffon Corps, etc.
When Zayne called Commander Drokk “Uncle Drokk”, there was a call-wide “ooooOOOOOHH!”
Sir Carl gave the twins the option of either staying with the party, traveling ahead to his estate in Traunia, or finding their own place to settle (with financial assistance from him).
Sir Carl’s player said it was up to me to decide, so I put a message in the discord chat, assigned some emojis, and had the other players vote.
Democracy has spoken! Wayne and Zayne are staying with the party!!
A server approached Sir Carl and the twins, offering wine and snacks. Also on the tray was something strange that only Sir Carl noticed - the pawn piece to a dragon chess set.
Sir Carl recognizes this calling card immediately, and rushes off into the party to try and catch up with eh server. Wayne and Zayne almost immediately lose him in the crowd.
The server disappears into the kitchen to restock her tray, and Sir Carl is unable to follow because of a “Staff Only” sign, written in Draconic and Common.
“Good thing Sir Carl can’t read (Draconic)!”
Outside of the kitchen, Sir Carl was approached by an old Aaracokra woman (who went unnamed, but who I’m lovingly dubbing “Gereldina”) who had in turn been approached by a “strange child with a red feather” to give Sir Carl the additional message to “look beneath”.
I gave my players psychic damage by pronouncing “meme” as “me-me”.
Failing the intelligence check, Sir Carl does not “look beneath” the pawn piece, and rushes up to the second level balcony to try and spot the “red feather” wearing message-giver.
“Gereldina” now has a husband named Harold.
From across the open ballroom, he spotted a red feather disappearing out onto a balcony overlooking the gardens, but by the time he was able to speed-walk (so as to not draw undue attention) out there, the balcony was deserted.
Left sitting on an empty table, however, was a parchment note written in familiar calligraphy, signed with a “C”, that read: “My Duke. I am unharmed. Please forgive the cloak and dagger, but I assure you, it is necessary. You have a spy in your midst. Keep this note secret, and look beneath”, with the last word underlined.
Sir Carl finally checked the bottom of the pawn piece, and found another note that read: “Beware the council who speaks beyond his borders.”
At least the party immediately picked up on what the clue was supposed to mean.
Spy suspects:
Bashur (far from his homeland)
Manon-Val (Tavarian - rejected on the grounds of “being too stupid” and “his wife would kill him”)
Sir Carl left his pinky finger ring on the table in place of the note, and walked back into the party. When he glanced back minute later, the ring was gone.
Meanwhile, Bagelby and Lord Featherton retreated to a VIP nook beneath the main stairway and closed the curtains.
Bagelby immediately searched the room for the Queen’s snuff box.
“Don’t steal the queen’s weed!”
Lord Featherton produced a wooden box, carved in the shape of a slug, from his sleeve, and opened it to reveal that it was full of Feywild slugs.
New OOC chat topic: Is a bag of holding slimy on the inside?
“Sometimes you need to lubricate the bag to put stuff in it.”
After starting with a few slugs and getting buzzed, Bagelby confessed to Lord Featherton that it had been himself in disguise, those weeks ago in Evershine City, and not actually Lord Wiggles.
Lord Featherton confessed that he had believed himself to be hallucinating on that day, but was not surprised to learn that he had not seen the actual Lord Wiggles again.
Bagelby also confessed that he’d found and stolen a series of suspicious letters written between Councilman Rondellion and “The Shadowed One” (the suspected head of the Sunfell Cult).
He had Lord Featherton read the letters as proof, but the noble only seemed resigned to their contents.
Lord Featherton hates Councilman Rondellion with a burning passion and has suspected him of wrongdoing for quite some time (and the feeling is apparently mutual).
Lord Featherton/Lord Wiggles is the new party OTP, apparently.
Bagelby broke out the planatir and used it - with Lord Featherton’s help - to scry for Lord Wiggles’ location.
He saw a vision of an island with mountains and towering, glowing crystal clusters, and Lord Wiggles fighting some sort of battle with a broken sword in one hand and a pitch torch in the other.
He (and the rest of the players listening in) assumed this meant that Lord Wiggles was alive and thriving on Pirate Island, and that finding him had to be their next big quest.
I may have built Pirate Island up a bit too much.
I may have built up Lord Wiggles a bit too much. People are either going to love his twist or absolutely hate it and I’m not sure which one I should be more committed to.
After failing a constitution check and realizing that he was VERY high, Bagelby summoned a nearby staffer to bring them three full pitchers of water, and ask no questions.
Two hours later, Bagelby and Lord Featherton stumbled out of the alcove wearing convenient sunglasses, nodded to each other, and went their separate ways.
Still wearing the sunglasses, Bagelby approached Queen Almaea, Prince Consort Manon-Val, and Crown Prince Kemat on the receiving dias and greeted them with a “sup, royals?”.
Ena’s Player: “I love that the royal family decides to straighten up when Bagelby approaches them.”
Thiori’s Player: “They’re like, “Oh, shit! It’s Bagelby! Quick, quick, sit up!”. I love it.”
Bagelby not-so-discreetly asked the Queen about how, hypothetically, one might go about finding an island full
I need to lore dump and my players respond well to fellow neurodivergence so the Gourman Sea Haze and its geography/history is now one of Almaea’s secret passions.
With a good stealth roll and most of the party being drunk enough to not be looking at the Queen anymore, Almaea sneaked off the dias with Bagelby and led him to another room deep run the palace, where she revealed to him a 3D tabletop recreation of the southern coast of Salance, the Gourman Sea, and the northern coast of Headuin, complete with a magical haze over the water to mimic the real one, little buildings to label towns, and tiny ships on the water.
Most of the map was built by professionals, but Almaea made the ships themselves. They’re visibly amateurish but they were made with love.
The Gourman Sea is covered by a haze of Vesnali crystal dust, which makes travel outside of the two known “safe” channels dangerous and deadly.
Most expeditions to find additional safe passages through the haze have been unsuccessful.
Somewhere between the point Lord Wiggles supposedly left port from and the point where he should have arrived, Bagelby found a mysterious land lump under the haze, which Almaea gleefully explained was the suspected location of the crater of the volcano whose eruption had caused the haze thousands of years ago.
Meanwhile meanwhile, Thiori went on a quest to find a bathroom, but got lost, and ended up on a rooftop balcony instead.
Up there, he found Tyr, Orelenna, Taco Baco, and Atrodak, who had been invited to the party by Manon-Val per Asahi’s request.
All four immediately jumped on him with a hug, and a happy shout of “DAD!”
Thiori immediately began crying and crushed them all in a hug with all four arms.
Thiori’s kids’ beach adventure highlights:
Tyr learned to surf
Orelenna got a crab tattoo
Atrodak won a pie eating contest
Taco Baco learned an entire vocabulary of new sounds
Full bladder forgotten, Thiori returned to the party with a kid in each arm, and met back up with Ena and Asahi,
Taco Baco gave Ena a little stone figure that looked vaguely like her, and Orelenna gave Asahi a little glass figure of the same.
Both were touristy trinkets, but Ena is going to take hers to her grave, and Asahi bit her tongue until it bled to not say something rude about the quality and break Orelenna’s heart.
Lex ran into Vatun a few more times at the food tables, and got a delicious snack recommendation each time before eventually feeling exhausted, and retiring to her room for a restless night’s sleep.
We left off with the party retiring to their rooms, and the kids to theirs, with promises to meet up again in the morning.

Here’s a Dredd painting I did based on the classic “Un-American Graffiti” strip from back in the day. It’ll be appearing in 2000AD as a pin-up soon I believe… spray cans and acrylic on canvas. It’s for sale, so if you fancy it bung me a DM… cheers! #judgedredd #dredd #2000ad #2000adcomics #2000adart #comicart #painting #scifiart #scifipainting #drokk @2000adcomic @judgedreddfanpage https://www.instagram.com/p/Ckibva6sqmt/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hey, I need the best dumb future slang words and terms you've read!
The Dredd ones are always the first to come to mind. Drokk, Stomm, Dok, Jovis Grud, Grud on a Greenie, etc.
Strontium Dog also has "sneck", as in "snecking bastard".
Cosmic Marvel had "d'ast" and "flark", and 40k has "zog" and "feth", and both of them had Dan Abnett who I'm sure fucking LOVES making up 2000AD-style curse words.
And of course, there's always Lobo and his beloved "Frag", "Bastich" and others.
