Wet Beast Wednesday: invasive carp
I've mentioned on a few posts that in a previous job I helped remove invasive carp from the Mississippi river and drainage. For this Wet Beast Wednesday I'll discuss the three species that I personally helped remove: the silver carp, bighead carp, and grass carp. The common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and block carp (Mylopharyngodon piceus) are also invasive in North America, but I didn't remove either of those: the black carp because they haven't made it as far north as the area I worked and the common carp because the state governments where we worked considered them commercially important species. All the invasive species collectively described in America as invasive carp or Asian carp are large fish from the family Cyprinidae who are native to east Asia. They have been introduced to areas far beyond their native range for use in aquaculture and for food. Carp aquaculture in China goes back over a thousand years and the three species plus the black carp are known as the "four domesticated fish" for their importance in food and traditional medicine. The carp were introduced to America to clean aquacultural and decorative ponds and quickly escaped into the river system. They are now highly invasive throughout the Mississippi river basin and have also spread into other river systems, including the Illinois and Ohio rivers. All the introduced carp species are considered highly invasive due to outcompeting native species, lacing predators as adults, and their hardiness allowing them to thrive in harsh conditions.

This picture isn't informative at all, I just thought it was funny (image: a close-up of the head of a silver carp, showing its eye and large, open mouth)
Silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) made up the majority of the carp I caught. In their native range (from Vietnam to eastern Siberia), silver carp are actually considered threatened due to overfishing and habitat loss. Outside of their native range, they have become highly invasive in multiple parts of the world. Silver carp notable for their large head and silvery scales, which become brighter in healthier fish. They reach an average of 60-100 cm (24-39 in) and 9 kg (20 lbs), but can reach a maximum size of 140 cm (55 in/4.6 ft) and 50 kg (110 lbs). They are filter-feeders, primarily dining on phytoplankton but also eating zooplankton and organic particles. To catch food, they use specialized gill rakers that have fused together into a spongy surface and is coated with mucus that traps particles. As with all Cyprinids, silver carp lack stomachs, instead having their intestines attaching directly to the esophagus. Lacking a stomach makes the fish less efficient in their digestion and they feed near constantly. Silver carp were introduced to America to clean blue-green algae from ponds, aquaculture facilities, and water treatment plants. They consume so much plankton that they can outcompete local species, such as freshwater mussels, paddlefish, buffalo, and shad, as well as larval fish of most species.
Tumblr media
(image: a silver carp being held by a person (offscreen). The fish is seen from the side. It is a large fish with a silver color. Its head is relatively large and has no scales. The eye is unusually low on the head)
Silver carp migrate upriver to broadcast spawn, with their eggs and larvae being washed downstream where they grow in shallow waters like floodplains. Silver carp trapped in places without flowing water will not spawn, instead reabsorbing their gametes. Males have rough skin on the front of their pectoral fins, which they will scrape against the bellies of female to induce them to release their eggs. Females that have spawned at least once often have scars on their bellies that can be used to identify that they have reproduced. Silver carp reach sexual maturity between ages 4 to 6 and can live up to 20 years.
Tumblr media
I believe I can fly! (image: a silver carp in profile midway through a jump out of the water)
Silver carp are famous for leaping out of the water when startled. They can reach up to 3 m (10 ft) out of the water, though larger individuals are less likely to jump. The sound of boat engines can easily spook the carp into jumping and there are many videos out there of boats moving through rivers surrounded with dozens to hundreds of jumping carp. The jumping behavior combined with the sheer size of the fish makes them a hazard to boaters, as colliding with a carp can damage boats and cause serious injury. Interestingly, carp in their native range are much less likely to jump than those in North America. The reason for this in unknown though it could be because carp in America live in much higher population densities than those at home. It is also possible that the carp first introduced to America happened to have a trait making them more likely to jump and this trait has been passed down to most modern carp.

Tumblr media
(gif description: a man is sitting on a running boat. A silver carp jumps in from the right side of the frame and hits him in the face, knocking his baseball cap off)
The bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) is closely related to the silver carp, enough so that they can hybridize to make fertile offspring. Bighead carp have darker scales and larger heads, but what really makes them stand out is their size. They reach an average of 60-100 cm (2-3 ft) and 18 kg (40 lbs) but can reach a maximum of 160 cm (5.2 ft) and 50 kg (110 lbs). They fill a similar ecological nice to silver carp, both species being filter feeders with specialized gill rakers used to filter out plankton. Bighead carp prefer zooplankton in contrast to silver carp targeting phytoplankton. They are highly valuable in aquaculture as they grow quickly, allowing for a lot of meat to be developed relatively quickly. Like silver carp, they swim up river to spawn and reach sexual maturity between 2 and 3 years. They can live up to 16 years. Bighead carp will also jump, but are less likely to do so, especially once they mature, and are therefore less notorious than silver carp.
Tumblr media
(image: two bighead carp underwater, one closer and to the bottom right and one farther away at the top left. They are very similar in appearance to the silver carp, but have larger heads and darker scales, making them look brown. The closer fish has its mouth open)
Grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) were the species I caught the least. They can be distinguished from the other two with their long, skinny, and round bodies, larger sales, and green coloration. Unlike the other two, grass carp are herbivores with teeth that feed on aquatic vegetation, though they also consume detritus and invertebrates in smaller amounts. Grass carp can eat up to a few times their weight in food a day. Grass carp can destroy whole patches of aquatic vegetation, which removes food sources for other animal, removes refuges for fish and other animals to hide, and can drastically alter the trophic web of local areas. They live in still ponds or rivers with slow currents, but move into fast-flowing rivers and swim upstream to spawn. They can reach between 60 and 100 cm (23.5 - 39.5 in) on average, but can get up to 2 m (6.6 ft) and 45 kg (100 lbs). Grass carp were first introduced to America to act as weed control in ponds before escaping into the wild. It is still possible to import grass carp for weed control, which is astonishing to me since thats how we got into this mess in the first place. Grass carp are highly valuable in fisheries and are used as a food source throughout their native range. They are the most farmed fish by biomass, with over 5 million tonnes of grass carp produced in fisheries every year. The second most farmed fish is the silver carp.
Tumblr media
(image: a grass carp underwater. Its body is slender and torpedo-shaped, with large, distinct, green scales. Its head is scaleless and its eye is level with its mouth. A second fish is peeking into frame at the bottom right)
One of the problems with controlling carp in America is the lack of a market for them. They are not commonly eaten in America despite being a major food source in China and other parts of east Asia. This is in part because of the association the phrase "Asian carp" has with the common carp, which was introduced to North America before the other species and is generally considered to have poor-quality meat. Because there is no market for invasive carp, fishermen do not bother removing them from the rivers and many do not bother taking the time to kill the ones they do catch. A few conservation efforts are attempting to make a market for the carp so that fishermen will take them. When I was at my last job, we gave the carp we caught to someone who used them for fertilizer and bait. A current effort by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is to rebrand the carp as Copi (from copious) in an attempt to get around the stigma that carp tastes bad and get Americans to start eating them. Copi is currently being sold in or distributed to multiple states and DC. The project has already exceeded the expected amount of fish removed in weight for the first year. Other rebrand attempts include Silverfin, the perfect catche, and (my personal favorite) Kentucky tuna. This rebranding is part of a major push to try to keep the carp out of the Great Lakes, though grass carp have already gotten into Lake Erie. If you can't beat them, eat them.

The House of the Vettii in Pompeii Reopens
The House of the Vettii, one of the largest and richest homes in Pompeii, prodigiously endowed with a fresco of Priapus that has become an icon of the city, reopens to the public on Tuesday after years of complex restoration.
The House of the Vettii was the home of Aulus Vettius Restitutus and Aulus Vettius Conviva, freedmen brothers who made a fortune as wine merchants and ascended the social ladder. Restitutus was a candidate for aedile, a magistrate responsible for holding public games and the maintenance of public buildings. Conviva was an Augustalis, a priest of the cult of the deified Augustus, a position of civic importance that was more akin to a magistracy. In this role he would have funded major public works projects.
The Vettii bought the house, originally built in the 2nd century B.C., after the earthquake of 62 A.D. It was in a tony neighborhood that many of the wealthy homeowners had left rather than rebuild. When the rich moved out, the nouveau-riche moved in. Freedmen who had made big bucks in trade like the Vettii were a prime example of the trend. They bought the aristocratic villa, repaired it and expanded it, adding a huge peristyle garden with statues and fountains. Every room was lavishly painted with frescoes on mythological motifs, telegraphing their wealth and the new status it bought them. Priapus, his massive phallus balancing on a scale against a bag of money, welcomed visitors in the vestibule of the house. Two large bronze strongboxes were placed in the atrium so everyone who got past Priapus would be confronted with the the most literal possible representation of the wealth of the Vettii.
The frescoes are mostly in the Pompeiian Fourth style, a combination of the previous three styles (faux marble veneers from the first, architectural trompe l’oeil from the second, ornate, stylized ornament from the third). The Vettii frescoes provide unique insight into the transition between the Third and Fourth style of mural painting. There is also a remarkable series of striking black and red frescoes depicting groups of cupids performing a variety of tasks, mythological ones like celebrating a festival of Bacchus and a festival of Vesta, sure, but of particular note are the representations of daily work, including the gathering and pressing of grapes, buying and selling the wine, dyeing and cleaning clothes in a fullery, picking flowers and making garlands for sale, making perfumed oil and making coins. The cupids are also captured at leisure, hunting on goat-back, racing in chariots pulled by deer and taking part in an archery contest.
The room adjacent to the kitchen was painted with a series of explicit erotic frescoes. It may have been a visual menu of options offered by an enslaved prostitute Eutychis who advertises her services for two asses (plural of as, the lowest-value Roman coin) on a graffito at the entrance of the house.
The domus was first excavated between late 1894 and early 1896. In the 1950s reinforced concrete roofs were added to the peristyle to protect the architectural remains from the elements. It was no longer protecting it, however. On the contrary, the flat concrete roof was unsound and directly contributing to water infiltration and damage.
Already affected by works in 1995, when the problem created by the concrete roofs of the 50s was evident, the house was partially reopened in 2016, after 12 years of closure and then closed again after 3 years for further restoration. Interventions that involved the roofing but also the paintings, with the removal of the patina created by previous restorations.
The old concrete roofs have now been replaced with sloped roofs formed from hollow blocks on metal frameworks. The wooden roofs added in the 1990s are still functional but needed refurbishment, and a new rainwater drainage system was devised to integrate the new roofs with the existing drainage system.
Conservators also cleaned and conserved the wall and floor decorations and the fixtures of the garden. It was a painstaking process of cleaning, regrouting and integrating interventions from different periods with the aim of recovering the legibility of the images and colors.

A/N: I'm late like always! But when writers block and life interfere, I'm late. Here ya go! @therealbattleangel
Warnings: slight cussing
Parings: Tom Grant x Reader
Word count: 2k
-----------------------------‐------‐------–-------------------
You just moved into your new place, It was small but it quickly became a home for you, something that rarely happens when moving.
With every new place it came with some defective parts and right now you kept on struggling with this one.
"Come on you piece of shit!" You said trying to untied the bolt that held the tube and sink connected.  You had googled why it wasn't draining or why a musky rotten smell came out of it.  You managed to use some chemicals and got rid of the smell, thank god, but the drainage still kept on going slow. So now you were trying to open the tube and see if something was stuck in there, that is what the nice man on YouTube said.
You cursed a few times when the thing wasn't budging. You grown frustrated and accidentally hit one of the water lines making it burst open.
"What the fuck!" The cool water kept on hitting your chest and face as you tried to reach over and shut the water line off. You gasped a couple of times feeling the water run up your nose until you finally switched it off.
"Shit" you said and grabbed a dry towel and your phone. You dialed the previous owners phone number and began laying dry towels on the floor trying to clean up the mess.
"Hello?"  The lady picked up and you quickly stopped what you were doing.
"Yes, Hi. I'm Y/n, the person who moved bought your trailer." You hear her gasp and tried making conversation but you were freezing your ass off and there was still a leaking pipe.
"Sorry for my rambling. What do you need honey?" You faked a laugh and said that 'it's okay! I enjoyed the talk' which was a load of shit. You were fed up with the damn sink!
"Do you have a handy man? Or someone who is a plumber? The bathroom sink isn't working right and I think that I made it worst." You heard a shuffling from the other line.
"Oh goodness. I actually do have someone I  mind. I'll give him a call and he'll be ther in less than five minutes if he is home." You sighed relieved and thanked the lady before hanging up. You began cleaning the water and putting the wet towels in the hamper when there was a knock on the trailer door.
"Coming!" You yelled and rushed to the door. You swung it opened almost hitting the person.
"You the guy?" You asked looking back into the bathroom making sure it was clean.
"Yeah." His voice sounded charming that you snapped your head back towards him. His brown eyes caught yours in a flash. He was incredibly handsome for a guy around these parts.
"Tom." He stretched out his hand and you shook it. His touch sent a shock to your body that you quickly removed your hand from his.
"Y/n. Come in! Bathroom is far end." You moved aside and let him through. Tom walked in and you pointed at the bathroom door. He winked at you and made his way. You were stuck with a blush running up your cheeks that you had to slap you cheek to snap out of it.
"What's the problem?" You followed behind him and explained what had happened, also your little fit costing one of the water lines. He kneeled down and began inspecting the sink. You kept on missing the side glances that Tom gave you while you kept on trying to clean up the water.
"Yeah-" you cut him off.
"Yeah what?" You said looking at him.
"The water line is fucked and I have to unscrew the pipe to see what is stuck in there." He said. You sighed annoyed knowing that, that was the reason why you were trying to unscrew it in the first place.
"I know." You mentioned and scooted closer towards him and began pointing out stuff under the sink. His eyes where glued to the way your wet hair stuck cutely to your face and how your lips moved, let's also mention how your wet shirt exposed some skin.
"Hello?" You waved your hand making him look away and closed his eyes.
"You okay?" You asked feeling a bit uncomfortable.
"Yeah it's that your wet shirt is a bit distracting and kind of sexy." He bluntly says. Your eyes snap down and see what he was referring. Your arms try and cover yourself but fail making you look ridiculous.
"Oh shit!" You said and ran towards your tiny bedroom slamming the door shut. Tom laughed and used one of the tools that he had on him to try and twist the screw, but he was struggling the same way you did. You on the other hand placed your hand on your chest feeling yourself breath heavily.
"You stupid fuck!" You angrily whispered to yourself when you see yourself in the mirror. You struggle to take off your wet clothes and drop it on the floor with a wet slap and rush to get a dark colored shirt. While making sure that you looked somewhat presentable a knock on your bedroom door made you jump.
"Its Tom! " you ridiculously rush towards the door and swing it open hitting your head with the edge.
"Yeah?" You rubbed your head and looked at him. He had a sweet smile on his face just taking your breath away.
"I see why you struggled. The last person sealed it pretty tight." He leaned against the doorframe and winked at you again. Heat took over your cheeks and it made him feel confident.
"You got to stop that." You said making him smile brightly.
"What?" Tom played dumb.
"I don't even know you and you just began flirting right off the top." You began feeling small as he scooted a bit closer to you.
"Whose fault was it to open their door to a single guy while they had their little wet tshirt contest." You ducked your head trying to hide the redness.
"It wasn't intentional, alright." You responded.
"I know..." he enjoyed how your ears turned a cute pink and how a strand of hair stuck against your cheek.
"You know..." he gently removed the strands of hair from your cheek.
"After I fix the sink, imma need some type of payment."  Your mind quickly went dirty and snapped your head up.
"What?! I bearly know you and you want-" he raised his hands to stop you. He understood that his words sounded inappropriate but his intentions were innocent. He laughed at your cute face and pulled away.
"I was wondering if you could pay me with a date." His demeanor turned shy and childish.
"You know, an Ice cream date by the beach side." You froze and made eye contact with him for a few seconds.  You knew that once he finished his sentence you had already screamed 'yes' in your head. Now you just needed to be vocal about it.
"Okay..." you said. He smiled brightly and backed out of your room, fumbling with a wrench he had in hand.
"Only if you fix the sink!" You yelled.
"Got it!" He exclaimed and jogged to the bathroom.
You patently waited as he finished the sink. You couldn't help but glance at him from your kitchen. He was incredibly attractive that you felt as if you're in a dream.
"Tom?" You called with a glass of lemonade in hand. He was screwing on the waterline and looked up at you.
"Need any help?" He shook his head and stood up.
"Just finished." He smiled when you handed him the glass.
"Good lemonade." He finished it and handed back the glass. The two of you stayed quiet and enjoyed each other's company when he looked at his watch.
"Its getting late if we want to get that ice cream." You nodded and grabbed your phone and wallet. The walk to the ice cream shop was long but seemed short while Tom kept on flirting with you.
"Two swirls, please." Tom said and payed the ice cream.  He handed it to you and he took a huge bite of his.
"Oh God. You know you're supposed to enjoy the ice cream." You giggled.
"Its hot. It'll melt fast." He responded and grabbed your free hand unexpectedly. You took advantage and began feeling his hand. It was rough and really warm while yours were clamy. You wanted to pull away but his hand tightened and began pulling you.
"Woah!" You said when he started jogging.
"Hurry! We're going to miss it!" You were confused but kept up with him. He kept on pushing pass people and got closer to the beach.
"What?! What are we going to miss?!" The now, night sky began lighting up. You looked up and see bright colors and kids yelling excitedly.
Tom slowed down and found a perfect rock for the two of you. The view was beautiful with the lighting making the ocean look like if it was dancing.
"Fireworks! How'd you know?!" Your eyes shined as you sat down on top of the rock. It had been a while since you've seen them, that you pointed each one that you found pretty. Tom kept his eyes on you. On how your lips curled up into a big grin or how your eyes spark. Tom missed all of the fireworks but he didn't complain. He was amazed by the view in front of him.
"That was amazing!" You had forgotten about your ice cream that had turned into a small puddle next to you.
"Thank you." You said and looked at Tom.
"Welcome." He softly said and sat closer towards you. Once more the two of you fell quiet enjoying the ocean breeze and waves.
"Do you believe that it takes 8 seconds for someone to fall in love?" Tom broke the silence making you look back at him.
"I've never heard of that..." you scooted closer towards him making eye contact.
"But I've come to believe that now." You began leaning in and he did the same. You could feel his warm breath hitting your lips making your breathing shallow.
His lips hovered over yours when cold water hit the two of you. You gasp and pull away covering your face.
"What the-" Tom yelled when a group of kids that lived around the neighborhood began giggling with water guns in hand. You had met the kids when you moved in. They wanted to help you with the heavy stuff.
"Tom and y/n sitting on a rock K.I.S.S.I.N.G-" Tom jumped off and began running towards them making them scatter. You decided to join him and go after the one who is the leader.
"Kids! Leave them alone!" One of the mothers yelled.
"Its time to go!" Another one called making all the kids whine.
"Aw man!" They bid their goodbyes and raced to their mothers. Tom and you were worn out.
"I think it's time to go home." You huffed trying to catch your breath. Tom had plastered himself on the sand. You reached out your hand and waited for him.
"Wanna walk me home, handsome?" Tom blushed but took your hand and got up.
"Sure." He lead the way without letting go of your hand. Once you let go of his hand and took a few steps toward your door.
"I had fun, Tom." You said genuinely and turned to him.
"So did I, Y/n." You finally leaned into him and pulled him into a kiss. It surprised Tom but he pulled you into him more.
The kiss was slow and tender, it felt right.
"I'll call you later...Goodnight." You pulled away leaving him speechless.
"Goodnight." He managed to say and waited until you had gone inside and closed your door. You quickly rush towards your bedroom window and look out.
"YES, YES YES!" You see Tom jump and blow kiss at your home before running away.
You flopped into your bed and began remembering what had happened throughout the day. How could you have kissed someone on the first day of meeting him. You placed your hand on your chest and felt your heart soaring.
You clean up the mess in your bathroom and get ready for bed still having a smile plastered on your face.
"Oh god!" You crash on your bed and try to get some sleep while having the day in mind.

On August 9th or 9th 1296 the Scottish Coronation Stone was removed from Scone Abbey.
The Stone of Destiny was taken on the orders of King Edward I of England, and was transported to Westminster Abbey, where it was used to crown English monarchs until it was returned to Scotland in 1996.
The Celtic name of the stone upon which the true kings of Scotland have traditionally been crowned is Lia Fail, “the speaking stone,” or the stone which would proclaim the chosen king.
Originally, the stone played a part in the crowning ceremonies of the Scots kings of Dalriada, in the west of Scotland, an area just north of Glasgow now called Argyll.
Kenneth I, the 36th king of Dalriada, united the Scots and Picts kingdoms and moved his capital to Scone from western Scotland around 840 AD. The Stone of Destiny moved there too. All future Scottish kings would henceforth be enthroned on the Stone of Destiny atop Moot Hill at Scone Palace in Perthshire.
The stone in question is no ornately carved megalith; just a simple, oblong block of red sandstone. It measures 650 mm in length by 400 mm wide, and 27 mm deep, with chisel marks apparent on its flat top.
So where did this magical or mythical stone originate from, and why was it held in such reverence by the kings of old?
One legend dates back to biblical times and states that it is the same stone which Jacob used as a pillow at Bethel. Later, according to Jewish legend, it became the pedestal of the ark in the temple. The stone was brought from Syria to Egypt by King Gathelus. He then fled to Spain following the defeat of the Egyptian army. A descendant of Gathelus brought the stone to Ireland, and was crowned on it as King of Ireland. And from Ireland, the stone moved with the invading Scots to Argyll.
What is sure, however, is that the Stone of Destiny remained at Scone until it was forcibly removed by English King Edward I (“Hammer of the Scots”) after his Scottish victories in 1296, and taken to Westminster Abbey in London.
Still another interesting legend surrounds this mystical stone. This one suggests that as King Edward I approached the Abbot of Perth, the monks of Scone hurriedly removed the Stone of Destiny and hid it. He replaced it with a drainage cover stone of similar size and hid the real stone on Dunsinnan Hill. It was the drainage cover which the English king carried off in triumph back to London.
Perhaps this legend is not so far-fetched. It could help to explain why the coronation stone is so geologically similar to the sandstone commonly found around Scone.
On St. Andrew’s Day, on November 30th, 1996, ten thousand people lined Edinburgh’s Royal Mile to witness the return of the Stone of Destiny to Scotland. It had been away for 700 years.

jonghyun takes a massive shit
cw // poop
Tumblr media
It was a simple night, where Jonghyun was driving through the highway towards his apartment where he felt a sort of clench on his butt. Usually, it would feel nice for him. However, there was a sort of brick trying to bust out his anus.
Feeling like he was bursting to shit, he stepped on the gas a bit more and drove as fast as he could while trying to hold on the poop as long as possible.
He eventually reach to the front entrance, getting out of his car in a rush with his items and fiddling with the keys. Luckily, there was a kind older lady who opened the door for him, allowing him to go inside.
He lived all the way at the 8th floor, but at least the building had a lift. The downside of that, was that most of the people using it were those with kids, old, disabled and especially those who live at the highest floor. So therefore, they would always be full and Jonghyun would have to walk all the way upstairs on foot.
By the time he reached the 4th floor, he could feel his poop jiggling in his ass trying to get out, only just to let out a smelly fart with nothing else. He took a while to take a break, making sure he doesn’t sit on his ass since it would make him want to shit.
Jonghyun eventually got up and brought the courage to go higher. He did went to see his front door, feeling so desperate that he would go on all fours, sticking his ass up to make sure that no poop would fall over as he was going to the bathroom.
He made it at last, but he needed to remove his pants by unbuckling his belt, unzipping his zipper and pull down his trousers and boxers. He sat down, feeling the relaxation of his anus as he sits there waiting for nature to take its course — only to find out that all he did was fart couple of times.
It did take a while, and after couple of trips to the kitchen to get himself water, he heard a plopping sound, feeling the toilet water tickle his hole.
Thinking nothing of it, he decided to turn around to flush when he saw a massive brown blob staring back at him. Jonghyun stood there in disbelief, thinking about how on earth can a poop this long was made and came out of him.
As a joke, he decides to take a picture of it before flushing it down the toilet when he saw the toilet water not fully flushed. It wasn’t until he walked back towards the toilet where he saw that his shit blocked the pathway for the drainage system. He had to plunge the poop, but with no avail.
He had no other choice but to wear his gloves and pick up his massive shit, cutting it into pieces with a poop knife before giving the flush another try.
Finally it went down the drain and Jonghyun was able to put his gloves in the trash and lay down after a long day at work. He couldn’t even be asked to wear pants in case another massive shit would come out of his ass once again.

Chapter 199 Trivia (Part 2)
(Previous part)
The drainage function Xeno is talking about here that caused the Perseus to sink is probably the bilge pump. The bilge is the lowest part of the ship. As any water on a ship drains downwards, a pump is needed to remove the water so it doesn't collect.
Without anyone ensuring the pump didn't stop, the hull filled with water and the Perseus sank. Bilge water also isn't usually just water, but can be full of other things like oil, chemicals, pitch, and dirt.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The KoS used pillow lift bags to recover the Perseus. To do this, someone needs to dive down and attach them (Taiju and Ryusui again, maybe?), then inflate them with compressed air.
A lifting bag filled with 1L of air lifts 1kg of weight, so if we knew the total size of the bags we could approximate the weight of the Perseus… Except they grossly overestimated, since the ship is flying out of the water rather than lifting slowly in a controlled manner.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chelsea's iron comment here confuses me because several of the ores they collected include iron in them? Maybe there's just not enough.
Tumblr media
The simplicity of the lower half of the mecha shown here along with the briefs reminds me of Astro Boy. The top half I believe is just the "DR" from Dr. Stone along with rocket-ship-inspired arms and Senku's face. Alternatively, it could be a reference to Tetsujin 28, also known in the western audiences as Gigantor, or even Mazinger Z.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Isla Martin Garcia is on the mouth of the Río de la Plata, between Uruguay and Argentina. It's less than 2km^2, and 150 people live there permanently (=Dunbar's number?)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you're wondering why the KoS is suddenly so far away from Fort Medusa, it's because it's where Stanley docked the Perseus several chapters ago.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Stainless steel uses approximately 11% chromium to get its heat- and rust-resistant properties, but can include other elements as well.
Tumblr media
Senku had already introduced bottling to the Ishigami villagers, but the addition of canning means less glass. Canning is especially good because while both methods can last several years, cans don't shatter and also protect from light. They also weigh less!
Tumblr media
Francois is making cans of fish meat and "gibier", which is the French word for game, or any kind of hunted meat. Going by the size of the carcasses and the picture on the can, I think it may be cow as Uruguay also eats the most beef per person in the world.
Tumblr media
Francois is serving sashimi on a generic model boat. How fancy!
I assume this won't be the design for the next Perseus, since it's made of wood rather than superalloys (and also covered in fish).
Tumblr media
Is Carlos jealous or uncomfortable with the fact that Max is reviving someone who looks just like him? I wonder if there's any blood relation…
Tumblr media
Taiju is tired for what may be the first time ever! Though it could be because he somehow managed to wear out a pickaxe of all things…
Tumblr media
Maya is revival #75 according to the bottle Taiju is holding. It also means Taiju returned back to Fort Medusa to mine rather than staying at Isla Martin Garcia.
Tumblr media
Communication between Fort Medusa and Isla Martin Garcia is established thanks to the usual radio setup, but with the addition of a Yagi-Uda antenna. This is a directional antenna, so they may be trying to hide from Whyman.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Senku and Chrome simply mark dangerous items with a skull and crossbones. Xeno? He makes the entire thing into the shape, with gas coming out of the eyes.
Can you get any more cartoonishly villainous, Xeno!?
Tumblr media
Xeno uses the Mond process to purify nickel.
The toxic gas he mentions is nickel carbonyl, which can be fatal if absorbed through the skin or inhaled. The gas smells musty or sooty, and decomposes to carbon monoxide quickly. Special gas masks are required to block the fumes.
Tumblr media
Xeno loves referring to people as the "mindless/ignorant masses". I wonder if his parents were the original "ignorant masses" telling him to stop messing around with dangerous chemicals in the backyard…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think this rock that Taiju finally manages to break with the help of Maya (and a new pickaxe) is the same one from before, but from a different angle.
Tumblr media
A few outfit changes: Suika's lenses are now full circles and not broken, Xeno's zipper is straight rather than zig-zagged and Charlotte has a little skirt to cover herself up better.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The timeline isn't very clear here, but at least 2 weeks pass between Maya and Charlotte's revival and Xeno's discussion with Senku going by moon phase.
Tumblr media
Many people have been revived, but because of the location they likely speak Spanish. We know several of the KoS know English and Japanese, and Francois knows French, so who's translating here?
I think it's funny Xeno didn't get a team-up high-5 from Senku even though everyone else does. They may be superallies now but not even Senku wants to go near those claws…

Why opt for a vinyl swimming pool?
The backyard Vinyl Swimming Pools are increasingly sought after by those wishing to build a leisure space at home. Discover this type of pool and its advantages. Because of its excellent value for money, the vinyl composite pool is one of the most popular projects. Find out how this type of swimming pool is made and know its advantages and maintenance at the time of maintenance.
Tumblr media
The vinyl composite pool is not as rigid as the fiber pool. It is their coating that differs. It covers the structure, usually masonry, built below ground level. Check out how to build a vinyl pool from scratch:
The construction begins with the demarcation of the land because the pool can take shape and size chosen by the customer.
As soon as the land is delimited, the space is dug and prepared to provide for the swimming pool installation.
Then an iron trellis suitable for the installation of the swimming pool is installed, and a layer of mortar and waterproof plaster on the ground is deposited.
The walls are then covered with concrete blocks that adapt to any type of soil, whether dry, sandy, or wet.
Then the finishes are made for the installation of the devices, such as the suction, the evacuation of the water, the bottom drainage, and the return.
Finally, the vinyl coating is applied to cover the entire structure, and a vacuum system does its fixing.
Tumblr media
The vinyl is custom-made and will be spread all over the pool to the walls. The pool-filling process can then begin. During this time, an industrial vacuum removes the air between the bag and the pool structure. In this way, the coating will not present creases or deformations.
Since it is a waterproof material, vinyl composite is also an excellent choice for those who need to renovate a concrete swimming pool, for example, with leakage problems.
In this case, prior maintenance is required to repair holes and broken tiles. A pre-vinyl cover is also applied so that the coating does not get abraded with the rest of the materials used.
Tumblr media
The advantages of the vinyl swimming pool
Vinyl pools offer many advantages:
Cost: construction requires less material and less labor to finish, resulting in shorter turnaround times and faster delivery
Waterproofing: the vinyl does not require the application of another waterproofing material since it already fulfills this function by itself, which also reduces costs
Maintenance: There is no need to replace materials like broken tiles.
Cleaning: vinyl is easy to clean and has a more hygienic appearance
Size and shape: as the construction of the vinyl is custom-made, there is no size or format limit for the construction of the pool
Customization: there are a large number of prints and colors on the market. For example, you can even personalize the vinyl by printing a logo or a coat of arms.
If you are embarking on the project of creating your vinyl swimming pool, it is recommended that you pay attention not only to the quality of the flooring but also to the construction of the structure. It is important to always call on the Best Pool Builders in North Carolina that will provide you with expert work. This will ensure the best value for your pool.

“Sometime in August 1769, miners at Mearn’s Pit in High Littleton, Somerset discovered that a rectangular drainage pipe they had constructed from elm wood was blocked. As in many mines, removal of water was a problem; so was ventilation. Around the end of 1766 they had sunk a new shaft to improve the airflow, but this brought more water coursing down the walls. They tackled this problem by installing lightly inclined wooden gulleys on the mine’s four sides to direct the flow to the 7.5 x 4 inch pipe. In turn, the pipe would carry the water off to a passage out of the mine about 42 feet below, probably pumped out by a Newcomen Engine – the early steam engine typically used at the time for this purpose. Less than three years later, their drainage system had begun to fail, prompting them to excavate and examine the pipe.
It had become so scaled up with minerals that the water could not drain fast enough. The deposit had a certain peculiarity: it was striped with alternating dark and light bands quite evenly throughout, but for a point where a nail had penetrated the pipe’s side.
A sample of the deposit from Mearn’s Pit came into the hands of the Reverend Alexander Catcott of nearby Bristol, a theologian with an interest in fossils and geological strata who had just published the expanded second edition of his Treatise on the Deluge (1768). Fossil traces of apparently aquatic forms far from any ocean had of course, since antiquity, fuelled the idea in many cultures of a great primeval flood. Now, as ever-deeper mining operations driven by capitalist industry brought heightened awareness of the Earth’s strata and the fossils with which they were associated, the gentleman scientists of the era were increasingly puzzling over implications for the Genesis narrative in the pages of such publications as the Royal Society’s Philosophical Transactions.
Indeed, already in 1719 local landowner John Strachey, who had developed an interest in extracting the coal under his estates, had written to the Society with his observations about the regularity of strata in the area around High Littleton. Strachey diagrammed the regular, sloping bands.
Of particular interest to those prospecting for coal, was that the regularity of these layers, always sloping towards the South East, made the location of veins predictable. While most mining since antiquity had occurred near the surface of the Earth, with knowledge like this deeper mines could be sunk with greater certainty of a return. A few years later, in 1724, Strachey followed up with another Philosophical Transactions article, further diagramming the Somerset strata and proposing a bold theory of their formation: the planet had been constituted with layers radiating from its centre at Creation, but its spin had caused them all to twist, furled one upon the other, ‘like the winding up of a Jack, or rolling up the Leaves of a Paper-Book’. There were 24 layers – one for each hour of the day – which had ticked by in a daily cycle ever since.
Strachey had granted a mining concession in 1719 to a neighbouring landowner, William Jones, who married his sister Elizabeth. Their daughter, Mary Jones, inherited the estate and coal property at High Littleton, and was one of eight local landowners involved with Mearn’s Pit a half century later when the pipe blocked and the strange, striped rock fell into Catcott’s hands.
From Catcott, the stone was passed to Edward King, an antiquarian and also a Fellow of the Royal Society, who wrote up his finding and diagrammed it in the image with which we started this article. Like Catcott and Strachey, King was much concerned with the implications of geological phenomena like regular strata and fossils for the Genesis narrative, and had offered his own speculations to the Society a few years earlier in ‘An attempt to account for the universal deluge’ (1767). In the terms of the proto-geological debates of the day, King was a Plutonist or volcanist: without quite contradicting the idea of a primeval flood, he proposed volcanic activity as the transporter of aquatic fossils from ancient sea beds to mountaintops. The opposing theory was that of the Neptunists, who held the continents to have precipitated out of ancient waters – but, King asked, where did all that water go? Similar debates can be traced all the way back to figures of the Islamic Golden Age such as Avicenna, and to some extent to Strabo, a Greek thinker writing at the time of the shift from Roman Republic to Empire. King was also a catastrophist, in that he took this volcanic movement of seabeds to have occurred in a single gigantic event which might also account for the deluge – with such an upheaval, there would, after all, have been a lot of water sloshing around. Within decades the Plutonists would win out as the modern scientific discipline of geology cohered, but catastrophism would give way to the gradualism of King’s more famous contemporary James Hutton and his heirs, such as Charles Lyell.
In 1791, Mary Jones died. According to her will, the estate and colliery were to go to a cousin, and in the execution of this a land surveyor was required, for which they hired a young man named William Smith; by the next year he was surveying Mearn’s Pit. Smith seems to have gained access to Strachey’s papers on the geological strata of the area – likely through the close family connection of his employer – and to have drawn on them in his own enquiries. It was in this work at Mearn’s Pit that he first developed the geological understanding which would eventually enable him to create his famous stratigraphic maps of Britain; the 1815 version was the first of any whole country.
Key to this was the orderly, predictable sequence of layers and associated fossils, a layering which, in his work and that of his scientific heir and collaborator John Phillips, would provide the basis for geological periodisations – Paleozoic, Mesozoic – still in use to the present. Thus Mearn’s Pit may be seen as a central location in the formation of a new notion of time, caked in the composition of the planetary crust; a time that is deep, structured in superposed layers, descending from the present surface down into the ancient past; a geological time that would come to be recognised as far greater than the biblical scales people were accustomed to, and which would provide an important basis for Darwin’s work a few decades later.
As to the peculiar rock that was clogging the pipework, King, for his part, does not seem to have put much thought into explaining its stripes. He attributed them to ‘the water bringing, at different times, more or less oker along with the sparry matter’. But his specimen seems to have been an example of what miners themselves called ‘Sunday stone’; indeed his is the earliest record of that stone I have been able to find. This stone often formed in the drainage pipes of mines as pale coloured lime was deposited by the water flowing through them. This lime would be tainted regularly by the coal dust that filled the air when miners were working. The resulting rock – a pure by-product of the labour process – could thus be a fairly good record of working hours in a particular mine, with dark stripes for working hours, separated by thin pale bands. Since miners typically worked six-day weeks, there was a pattern of six fairly even pairs of stripes, followed by a thicker pale band for Sundays – hence the name. Holidays too were marked in this mineral timesheet. Here was another temporality inscribed in the layered rocks of Mearn’s Pit, on a scale far different to the geological one that would emerge from the work of stratigraphers like Smith. This was the time of the capitalist labour process, caked in rock.
A younger contemporary of Smith’s, Robert Bakewell, would publish his Introduction to Geology in 1815, the same year as Smith’s map. Bakewell was familiar with Sunday stone and noted a certain analogy in a discussion of ‘the formation of the superficial part of the globe’. If the Earth’s strata could have been formed through ‘successive igneous and aqueous eruptions forced through craters and fissures of the surface’, which would each have deposited a new layer of rock, this layering could be seen in microcosm in a certain artefact:
To compare great things with small, there is an analogous formation taking place every day in the channels which receive the boiling waters from some of the steam-engines in the county of Durham. This water contains a large quantity of earthy matter which is deposited every day, except Sunday, in regular layers that may be distinctly counted, with a marked line for the interval of repose on Sunday, between each week’s formation: hence the stone got out of these channels has received from the country people the name of Sunday stone.
Thus Sunday stone appeared as an example of geological time in microcosm, the strata deposited during regular cycles of work and rest analogous to those deposited during phases of volcanic activity and inactivity. If the regular, measured time of the working week gave Sunday stone its peculiar form, materially encoding its periods in stripes legible to miners, the same may be possible with geological strata, reading from their sequence the time of the Earth itself. The mine was at that point the primary means for the development of geological knowledge – and, it turned out, even its labour process could supply a model of deep, structured time.
By the 1870s, according to Francis Buckland’s Curiosities of Natural History, King’s specimen had made its way to the British Museum’s North Gallery No. III. Marx was still working in the reading rooms, so it seems reasonable to wonder if he encountered the stone, and what he might have made of it. Marx read the work of the geologists that emerged in part from Mearn’s Pit: he engaged fairly substantially with Phillips – and Smith gets the odd mention – in the notebooks of March–September 1878; he was well aware of the stratigraphic science of the moment. But King was a minor, eccentric figure from a previous age. Bakewell was more significant, but by the time Marx looked seriously at geology his introduction was out of date; he studied the 1872 edition of Joseph Beete Jukes’s Student’s Manual of Geology instead.
Sunday stone was known somewhat in British culture by the mid nineteenth Century, apparently more from miners themselves than the more famous geologists, to whom it would perhaps have remained a mere curiosity. It was mentioned with characteristic moralism in Christian children’s literature, as God’s record of labour time in admonitions to observe the Sabbath – as if a religious injunction was required for miners to desire a day out of the pits. But this stone seems, on the contrary, an exemplary materialist object, for here we find capitalist social forms already – in the belly of the Industrial Revolution – meshing with geology, leaving traces in the crust, the most literal announcement of the Capitalocene; labour time fossilised like the rings of an ancient tree, at a key site in the discovery of geological temporality; a time written in the black of fossil fuel; a time that congealed until the production process itself broke down.”

Connect with Experts from a Drainage Company in Barnet
Tumblr media
People are more and more interested in how to get rid of drainage problems. Understanding drainage problems is not as simple as it sounds. Many factors influence the level of drainage sitting on a property, and it is also challenging to determine whether natural or human causes cause these problems. However, an expert can provide you with a solution for your property drainage problem by providing you with beneficial suggestions. A drainage company in Enfield is a company that deals with the drainage of water from the soil; hence they are responsible for maintaining the drainage system.
Tumblr media
The problem with the word "drainage" is that it doesn't have an explicit definition; "drainage" can refer to a pipe or a hole but also something that drains water from the soil. By connecting with a drainage company in Barnet, you can:
Get access to Drainage reports and information on your land, irrigation schemes, etc.
Get real-time water consumption data much faster than if you had to rely on manual monitoring.
Save time by ensuring that you hire the right experts for the jobs, not those with no experience or expertise in the area.
Reduce reporting costs by ensuring that people knowledgeable about the drainage sector are hired rather than those who don't know their field at all.
Tumblr media
You might be experiencing the problem of having a blocked manhole in Enfield. A maintenance hole is a small opening in the ground for sewage or water. It is an unsightly, inconvenient, and potentially dangerous place to put your garbage. It can also be a source of flooding if it fills up with water.
A blockage can occur in the drainage system of a maintenance hole and become very difficult to remove. The blockage can be debris, dust, or even human waste. When this blockage forms, it becomes impossible for the sewer system to flow through it. When this happens, flooding could severely damage your property, such as homes and businesses.
Tumblr media
The problem with blocked garden drains is that they get clogged with leaves, twigs, and other debris. It can cause a lot of problems for your garden or the environment. You can have blocked garden drain in Enfield due to many reasons. The most common reason can be the accumulation of water and debris. Moreover, it can lead to many problems like flooding and blockages.
We all know how difficult it is to unblock a blocked toilet at home. It's a daily routine that we have to do. But many people are unaware of this and continue to block their toilets for years because they think the problem will go away after some time. It is not valid!
Tumblr media
We should unblock a blocked toilet as soon as possible so you can use them properly. If we keep blocking them, the sewage water will eventually drain through our drains and into the environment, polluting our water supply with harmful bacteria and other pollutants. So it's better to solve the problem of blocked toilets by engaging experts for blocked toilet in Enfield. You can engage Drain Unblocking 247 professionals if you have blocked toilets or garden drains.

Taking Care of Business 2 – Back to Using Water
The undeniable advantages of a flush toilet
In my last post on humanure composting I described how human feces can be composted in a simple, cheap, and efficient way, and why it is less wasteful of water and nutrients than using a conventional flush toilet.
Now, I want to return to the idea of flushing down our human wastes with water. This is not playing devil's advocate, I simply want to look at all possible advantages of that system, to see how they can be utilized in a sustainable way. Also, certain people may have a hard time adjusting to a system they are not familiar with, no matter how efficient it may be. There's nothing to be ashamed of in this. We are toilet trained from an early age, and what we learn during that formative period tends to stay with us all our lives. A flush toilet may in fact constitute a psychological necessity. This need is also important and should not be ignored, especially since there are real, tangible upsides to flush toilets.
The biggest advantage of water is the perfect seal it forms, blocking any smell from whatever has passed the curve in the pipe. This fact alone may be important enough to consider a flush system, preferably the kind that won't waste our resources like our conventional system does.
Can a flush toilet actually be sustainable?
The two most important questions to ask in this regard are: Where does the water for our toilet come from, and where does it go from there? If its origin is a clean water source, such as wells or aquifers, or any elaborate, energy hungry, purifying system, I would deem the use of such system for flushing toilets criminal, to say the least. Using potable water to get rid of excrement while others are dying of thirst used to be punishable by death in many cultures. On the other hand, the flush toilet becomes more acceptable if the water has been used previously, at least a couple of times, as it happens in Earthships. There the water in the toilet has already been used twice: first to wash (hands, dishes, clothes, shower, etc.), then to water plants in the gray-water planter in the greenhouse.
Tumblr media
No Earthship? No problem!
Earthships are amazing at catching water, filtering it, using and reusing it, and still re-reusing it further. But what if we don't happen to be living in such a well designed structure? We can still use the water at least once, before flushing it down the toilet. For example, in one of the most common activities linked with the toilet: washing our hands. Japanese toilets have been famous for these kinds of features,  but the same idea can be implemented with locally available materials. The picture on the right is my first attempt at this in our Mexican apartment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The other question regarding the water's final destination is equally important. Since there is no “out” or “away” where you could throw it, another option must be sought. Can humanure in water be composted? It sure can, once it has been removed from the water. Red compost worms (Eisenia fetida) do an amazing job at it. In one place in New Zealand I had the pleasure to help set up such as system. Inside of the house were a seemingly standard bathroom with a flush toilet and a kitchen with a garbage disposer in the sink. Both drained into the same bin behind the house, a concrete basin of 180x60cm, with a depth of 70cm (6 x 2 x 2.3 feet). In the bottom we laid a loop of drainage pipe, leading out through the drainage hole of the basin, and covered it all with gravel. On top of the layer of gravel we suspended a mesh basket. This is where the solids will remain, and where the worms live. The water drains away immediately while the solids remain, feeding the worms. When the basket is full of compost it can be lifted out and emptied, something we estimated to happen every 1-2 years. Meanwhile, the occupant of the house could enjoy full western comfort in kitchen and bathroom, while knowing that their resources won’t be wasted.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But what happens to the water?
Once it has left the worm-bin, the water flows through a series of basins. The first one is a filtration tank, with layers of bark, scoria, sand, and charcoal. The next step after this tank is the 97 liter (26 gallon) dosing chamber. This feature of the system ensures that when water enters the soakage trench, it spreads out evenly. Without the dosing chamber the water would dribble little by little, every time the facilities are being used, without much pressure, and accumulate in the lowest section of the trench. However, if everything is flushed at once, the entire pipe fills up evenly. This type of dosing chamber works with a pressure siphon. The lack of moving parts guarantees the low maintenance aspect.
Tumblr media
Eventually the water drains down the hill into the pipe inside the trench. The trench is 50 meters (164 feet) long, following the contour line of the hill. Around the pipe the trench is filled with more scoria as well as charcoal. This will soak up the water as soon as it comes out of the pipe, and more microorganisms can feed on it. A bit further down the hill a line of citrus trees make use of the water that passes onward through the trench. Still further down the hill, once it has passed through the filter, the trench, and the orchard, the water goes into a pond. A red aquatic weed grows on the surface, which can be skimmed off and used in the garden. It is very rich in nutrients and can be either dried, used as mulch, or mixed into the soil. In any case, it returns the excess nutrients back into the food circle, allowing us to eat our own wastes in form of healthy, tasty, nutritious food.
Tumblr media
Other possibilities?
Yet another system I have seen doesn't even need a hill to flush and spread out the water. The concept is quite similar: Nutrient-rich blackwater from the toilet goes into an 'infiltrator', an inverted half-pipe buried underground, with about 60 cm (2 feet) of pumice or scoria under, around, and above it. This buried dome is empty inside, that's where all the water from the house drains into. The water seeps down, into the many tiny pockets in the volcanic rock, where microorganisms get to compost it. Fruit trees are planted all around the infiltrator, and sunflowers on top of it. Their roots reach around and under the half-pipe, taking up the water and the nutrients.
Design for the proper scale
With so many ways to utilize the nutrients from human wastes, whether with or without water, there really should not be an excuse for not composting humanure. No matter which option we go with, it's always important to design the system at the right scale: don't make it too small, which can be quickly overwhelmed by a sudden peak of visitors, but don't make it too large either, which would leave its dependents (worms, trees, etc.) without the water and nutrients they need. Most importantly, make sure all the water you use is taken up, to avoid ground-water contamination, as it is often the case for old-style outhouses.

How a Split Air Conditioner Can Help You Save Money?
Tumblr media
Knowing the most efficient way to run a mini split will help you get the most out of your investment. Mini split heat pumps are known for their efficiency. But, it’s important that they’re properly controlled and maintained to maximize savings. Weather, size and placement, maintenance, home efficiency, and how you control your mini split can all affect its efficiency.
Properly Manage Mini Split Run Time
Central HVAC systems cycle on and off every 15 minutes or so, but this isn’t the case with a mini split. You may be tempted to turn your mini split on and off or to dramatically adjust temperature settings to conserve energy. But that isn’t always the way to go. While that would be a smart way to save when using other HVAC systems, mini splits operate best when used consistently. It’s kind of like a car getting better miles per gallon at a constant speed. Instead of making major changes, smaller adjustments are a better option to save.
Optimize Mini Split Settings
Optimizing your mini split’s settings will also help increase efficiency. To start, pick a comfort level. Adjust your temperature settings until you reach your desired degree of comfort. Keep in mind that a mini split measures temperature closer to the ceiling where it’s installed, so you may have to set the temperature a little higher than you’re used to. Next, choose the ‘AUTO’ fan setting. Mini split auto mode will allow your system to change fan speed based on the weather and your temperature setting. So, be sure to use auto mode, it’s the best setting for mini split efficiency!
Maintain Mini Splits Regularly
- Clean and dry or replace the air filter about every 4–6 weeks.
- Clean the condenser coil about every 4–6 weeks. Before doing this, turn off the power and let the system sit for at least an hour. Your condenser coil is located in the outdoor unit, and you’ll need to remove the cabinet first. Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe down the coil.
- Keep the area surrounding the unit clean. Make sure there’s nothing close to the inside or outside unit that could potentially block airflow. This includes vegetation, toys, snow, fallen leaves, etc.
- Ensure proper drainage. Your mini split’s evaporator collects condensation through suction tubing. Make sure the outdoor unit is draining properly.
Get Smarter Control
There are many other benefits to getting a smart mini split thermostat that will help you find the most efficient way to run your mini split, for example:
- Mini split app control and smart features allow you to monitor and control your mini split’s settings from anywhere.
- You can set schedules, so your mini split automatically adjusts if you have a planned vacation or weekend getaway.
- Features like Energy Insights track usage information like humidity, ambient temperature, and runtime, so you can find ways to save.
- Mini split Google Home, Alexa, or HomeKit smart home integration makes life even easier.
- A feature like thermostatic control measures temperature close to where you are, so you’re more comfortable.
Ensure Proper Mini Split Size & Placement
As with any HVAC equipment, proper sizing is imperative. Heating and/or cooling equipment that’s too small will cause the system to overwork. This negatively affects the life of the system and means it may not be able to produce enough warm or cool air. On the flip side — is it OK to slightly oversize a mini split? Ideally, no. Equipment that’s oversized won’t run efficiently and will likely cause short cycling, poor humidity control, and waste energy (and money).
