Official Akira Pre-movie Timeline
Character childhoods, historical events etc.
hiiii Akira tumblr, I haven't been around here much but here's a translation I did. I've never seen this full timeline translated anywhere, so maybe it'll be of interest !😳
(I did a condensed version on Twitter a while ago, but I figure it's easier to follow in its original format .)
(Long post under the cut)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Source is the book Poster & Graphic Akira released in 1988. Also a special thank you to my old friend Shina-san for the photos from the book, I don't yet own a copy myself !!
1970
Nezu's birth - Born in Chiba as the third son of farmers.
1976
Colonel's birth - Has an older sister and an older brother. His father served in the Japan Defense Agency, JGSDF major.
1977
Nezu age 7 - Started elementary school.
1982
Nezu age 12 - Started middle school. Excellent grades.
1985
Nezu age 15 - Started high school.
1988
Nezu age 18 - Started law school. The disaster of Akira’s awakening occurred. In the chaos of the next 3 years, he studied life as a black marketeer. During that time he became acquainted with the people of this underworld.
Colonel age 12 - His father died to Akira’s first awakening. (He was on a special mission, suspected to be related to the Akira Project). After the world war (which ended after 3 weeks), until he was 15 he spent the next years of chaos with his mother and siblings. These events would profoundly shape his later development. (Until 1991, Japan lacked a governing body and was controlled by the US)
1992
Colonel age 16 - Started night school. Studied while working.
1993
Colonel age 17 - Having regained autonomy, Japan emulates the US and establishes an American-style military.
1994
Nezu age 24 - As university resumed operation, he returned to school.
1995
Nezu age 25 - Graduated. Passed the bar exam, and became a lawyer.
1996
Colonel age 20 - Graduated night school. Enrolled in the newly established military academy (National Defense Academy).
1999
Colonel age 23 - Graduated military academy with excellent grades. Admitted to Officer Candidate School on recommendation.
2000
Nezu age 30 - From around this time he begins to appear in politics.
Colonel age 24 - Graduates from Officer Candidate School. Enlists in the Army as a First Lieutenant.
2001
Colonel age 25 - Studies abroad at the US Department of Defense.
2002
Nezu age 32 - Hears about Miyako-sama, and becomes a devoted believer.
Colonel age 26 - Returns to Japan. Establishes the Army Special Forces. Becomes its commander. Promoted to Major.  Dispatched in the Soviet-DPRK War, which had been ongoing since 1996. He is awarded a decoration for his service.
2003
Colonel age 27 - Through matchmaking by his superior officer, he gets married.
Kei - Born in April. Her father, born 1967 (age 36), is a teacher. She has an older brother. They're 14 years apart.
2004
Kaneda - born in September (at this time, schools would have September enrollment and August graduation). His father born 1977 (age 27). His mother born 1978 (age 26).
Yamagata - born in November. His father is a Yakuza.
Colonel age 28 - By creating a new unification of land, sea, and air defense systems, he successfully allows Japan to gain independence from the US protective defense system.
2005
Nezu age 35 - He trains diligently under Miyako, and establishes himself. From around this time he separates under a new sect of Miyako's religion, and starts a political organization, becoming its president. Behind the scenes he is backing anti-government activists at the same time.
Kai - Born in January. His father works in the construction industry. He is blessed with a good home environment.
Tetsuo - Born in July. His father born 1980 (age 25). His mother born 1981 (age 24). In 1984, as part of the Akira Project, experiments were conducted on children around the age of 10, and genetic manipulation was (secretly) performed on newly born children. The effects of this skipped a generation and manifested in Tetsuo… and are gradually beginning to show in other children.(His grandfather was a genetic engineer. He participated in the Project. He died during Akira's awakening in 1988)
Colonel age 29 - He and his wife separate. They have no children.
2006
Yamagata age 2 - His father is arrested. He will serve 25 years. His mother makes a living as a hostess.
2008
Kaneda age 4 - His little brother is born. His parents open a laundry service. His little brother is born with a disability, and goes between home and treatment centers since the time he's 2 years old.
Yamagata age 4 - His mother gets a boyfriend. A little brother is born.
Kei age 5 - Her father dies. (Illness)
Tetsuo age 3 - His father (a graduate student), who's been sickly since birth, develops pneumonia from the common cold, and dies. His parents were never officially married, so as his father's child born out of wedlock, he's poorly received by his mother's side of the family.
Colonel age 32 - He is appointed commander of the nation's top secret 'Akira Plan' as Colonel. (The 'Akira Plan' began 3 years after Akira's awakening in 1988, when the US began investigating, and in 1996 it was turned over to the Japanese government. Since then, despite organization of records and repeated experiments, there hasn't been much progress. This may be why the US let go of it….) The heads of government began to feel threatened by the Colonel's excessively growing power, so even though it was a top national secret, they appointed him to this do-nothing position to force him to withdraw from the front lines, as a means of dismissal. …As for why the Colonel resigned himself to this sinecure, perhaps it's because he was seeking answers about his father's death, or trying to fulfill his father's dying wish, or maybe he himself saw potential in this investigation…. There are various possibilities, but one can only speculate.
2009
Yamagata age 5 - His mother gets another boyfriend. A little sister is born.
Kei age 6 - Starts elementary school. Her older brother is 21. He's already a student activist while also supporting the family.
Tetsuo age 4 - His mother remarries. Tetsuo is adopted by another family. But he can't get used to his new home and is gradually shunned as a gloomy child.
2010
Kaneda age 6 - Starts elementary school. Due to the fatigue of nursing his younger brother, his father collapses.
Yamagata age 6 - Starts elementary school. Another little brother is born.
2011
Kai age 7 - Starts private elementary school. Gets excellent grades.
Tetsuo age 6 - Starts elementary school. At this time he starts repeatedly running away from home.
2012
Kaneda age 8 - Changes schools due to his little brother changing treatment centers. His mother runs off. They live off of government assistance. His father shows a distinct turn towards alcoholism.
2013
Kaneda age 9 - His father is deemed unfit to take care of the children, so Kaneda is sent to an orphanage. His little brother is kept at a hospital. Half a year later, Tetsuo comes to the orphanage.
Tetsuo age 8 - His parents try to return him, but his birth mother won't accept him, so he's sent to an orphanage. He then meets Kaneda.
2014
Kei age 11 - Starts middle school.
2015
Kaneda age 11 - Graduates from the orphanage and goes to a boarding middle school. He's separated from Tetsuo.
Yamagata age 11 - Starts middle school. His mother continues to have children, both boys and girls. She also keeps changing boyfriends.
Kei age 12 - Her older brother is arrested as a suspect in a major incident. (Something like the Mikawashima train crash). There are rumors that it was a US plot against the organization her older brother was connected to. Following this, Kei's family was supported by donations from her brother's group, organized by her brother's junior, Ryusaku.
2016
Kaneda age 12 - His defiant attitude stands out in school.
Yamagata age 12 - Caught by the police for shoplifting. He was stealing sweets for his little siblings.
Kai age 12 - Goes to the same private academy for middle school.
Tetsuo age 11 - He's adopted again by another family. He then starts middle school.
2017
Nezu age 46 - He may be doing it to spread the religion's ideals, or he may be using the religion for his own desires, or perhaps both….?
Kaneda age 13 - A complete juvenile delinquent. His grades are above average.
Yamagata age 13 - His mother joins a new religion. He leaves home.
Kei age 14 - Her older brother dies in prison. The authorities claim it was a suicide, but it's suspected that he was tortured. Kei leaves home and asks Ryusaku if she can become an activist too.
Tetsuo age 12 - Becomes truant. Frequently runs away from home.
Colonel age 41
2018
Kaneda age 14 - Expelled after a brush with the law. Starts at vocational school.
Yamagata age 14 - Starts at vocational school.
Kai age 13 - His father runs away from home. They find him. His father confesses: "I'm gay, and have been deceiving our family this whole time…."
Kei age 15
Tetsuo age 13 - Due to misconduct with an elementary school student, he gets in trouble with the police. From this point forward he stops going to school.
2019
Kaneda age 15 - Forms a motorcycle team at the vocational school.
Tetsuo enrolls.
Kai age 14 - As junior representative, he reads an essay titled 'Is Life A Joke' to the graduating seniors, and is suspended. One week later, he turns in his notice to withdraw, and enrolls in vocational school himself.
Tetsuo age 14 - His parents convince him to go to vocational school. He reunites with Kaneda, and is admitted. There, he joins the motorcycle team.

Korean War and Related Reading Recs!
I recently reblogged a post and shared some books I know that have North Korea/DPRK as a topic. Here's a more complete list of books I have on Korean War history and related tangents. I haven't read all of these, and most I haven't read in maybe 3 years so I'm a little fuzzy. All are worth checking out though I think.
Korea: Division, Reunification, and U.S. Foreign Policy by Martin Hart-Landsberg - Far from perfect but in my opinion this is one of the best crash-course books that covers a bit of prewar Korea, US involvement, and discusses Korea's position amongst other Cold War conflicts.
Patriots, Traitors, and Empires by Stephen Gowans - This one is similar to the one above but has more emphasis on events and people North Korea, and is a bit more focused on the peninsula than global implications.
The Hidden History of the Korean War by I.F. Stone - Major major major book in Korean war studies, originally published in 1952 while the war was ongoing. So certain events and questions are highlighted and discussed that got more washed away by popular history.
A Korean American Housewife Goes to North Korea by Shin Eun-mi - A collection of travel diaries from her travels to North Korea between 2011-2012. I'm not sure how the English translation is but I read most of it in Korean. As far as I could tell she's a little naive about the history and understanding of the tensions between North and South, but it contains tons of photos and musing about reunification. There's a documentary on the aftermath of this book being published called To Kill Alice
Works by Bruce Cummings - Cummings is probably the most major English language historian of Korea. I have never completed any of his books because he tends to make weird racist comments typical of an old white American, but he has compiled a TON of sources and information in his books and his bibliographies are good to sort through. Especially in the two volume The Origins of the Korean War, though the second volume is pretty impossible to get a hold of outside a major university.
Gwangju Diary by Lee Jae-eui - (Haven't read) A day to day eye witness account of the Gwangju Uprising.
The Massacres at Mt. Halla by Hun Joon Kim - (haven't read) On the Jeju Uprising/Massacre in 1948 and subsequent conflict and politics on and around the island
Haunting the Korean Diaspora by Grace M. Cho - (haven't read) On the emotional and physical violence between the US and Korea with a focus on sexual relationships between South Korean women and US soldiers.
Korea's Grievous War by Su-kyoung Hwang - (Haven't read) Looks like a focus on Korean politics and internal conflicts between 1948 and 1953
Ideologies of Forgetting: Rape in the Vietnam War by Gina Marie Weaver - This one is on Vietnam but there are sections that discuss Korea and South Korean soldiers in Vietnam. I think it's an amazing book on US war ideology and sexism within the US military that can go hand in hand with any book on US wars
Feel free to add on if anyone has any more recs! I know there's a lot more out there

🇺🇲🇰🇵 UNITED STATES SOLDIER WHO CROSSED INTO THE DPRK NOW IN AMERICAN CUSTODY
The AP is reporting that United States service member Pvt. Travis King who mysteriously ran across the demilitarized zone into North Korea is safe and has been taken into American custody, according to two anonymous US Officials Wednesday.
King, who had been serving as a Private in the US Army, had been facing disciplinary actions after serving 47 days in a South Korean prison for assaulting an unnamed person in South Korea and for damage caused to a police vehicle. King was also involved in another incident where he was accused of punching a 23-year-old man at a Seoul Night Club, but those charges were dismissed when the victim did not press charges.
After serving his 47 days in a South Korean prison, King was escorted to Customs in the Seoul airport where he was expected to take a flight to Fort Bliss, Texas where he would await disciplinary action.
Instead, King snuck out of the airport after his escort returned to the base, joining in a tour of the DMZ. Towards the end of the tour, witnesses said they were milling about and taking photos when one of the people on the tour saw King sprinting "really fast" towards the DMZ.
"I assumed he had a mate filming him in some kind of really stupid prank, or stunt, like a Tiktok, the most stupid thing you could do" said Sarah Leslie, a tourist from New Zealand who was on the same tour as Pvt. King. "But then I heard one of the soldiers shout, 'get that guy!'"
In just a few moments, it was already too late and King had made it across the border.
On Wednesday, the DPRK's official news agency, the Korean Central News Agency, reported that DPRK Authorities had finished their questioning of Pvt. King and that he'd confessed to entering the country illegally because he had "Ill feelings against inhumane maltreatment and racial discrimination" within the US Military and had become "disillusioned about the unequal US society."
King was held by DPRK Authorities for a total of 71 days, which appears to be relatively quick compared with previous similar incidents, especially when considering it under the context of heightened tensions due to the increased and expanded US Military exercises in the region and the DPRK's persistence in developing and testing cruise missiles for its Nuclear weapons deterrent.
Most observers expected DPRK Officials to hold King to use as a bargaining chip with the West, or as a propaganda asset. Instead King was delivered to US Military Officials in China Wednesday.
Unfortunately for King, his troubles are nowhere near over, as the US Army declared King AWOL, and it is unlikely he won't face further charges and disciplinary actions through the Army which could include military jail time, pay forfeiture, or dishonorable discharge.

I’m trying to find more sources for this photo atm but I saw it captioned as depicting DPRK soldiers during the Korean War. I’ve never seen this pattern of uniform though and it’s very interesting, also extremely swagful. The collared waistcoat is oddly reminiscent of American and British Ike jackets, but with red army inspired epaulettes

Russian cargo aircraft would be making secret flights to North Korea, allegedly looking for missiles
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 03/30/2024 - 21:15 in Military
A huge An-124 cargo plane with an alleged history of North Korean weapons smuggling was tracked back from an apparent mission to seek more short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) provided by the Kim Jong Un regime.
A recent report by Colin Zwirko of NK News shed light on secret flights conducted by two Russian military aircraft to North Korea.
Tumblr media

Tumblr media

The flight tracking data analyzed by Zwirko suggest that a Russian cargo plane An-224 (tail number RA-82030) - one of the largest transport aircraft in the world - was traveling from the DPRK towards Vladivostok, east of the shared border coast of the two countries at 6:47 a.m. (North Korea time) on March 21. It is likely that the plane went to Pyongyang, since another Russian government aircraft, a Tupolev Tu-154 of the "Special Flight Squadron" (tail number RA-85843), flew from Vladivostok to Pyongyang hours earlier, pointing to ongoing secret exchanges between Russia and North Korea.
Tumblr media

Tumblr media

This plane departed from the Russian city of the Far East just before midnight on March 20, before landing in Pyongyang after 12:24 a.m. (North Korea time) on March 21. He then left Pyongyang for Vladivostok less than two hours later, about the same time the cargo plane left Vladivostok. Then he turned off the transponder and disappeared from tracking, a common practice for Russian aircraft and cargo ships that were sighted in North Korea. Flights with the Tu-154 did not have their transponder turned off to Pyongyang.
According to the NK News report, several other flights were observed on monitoring sites.
Of particular interest is the involvement of the 224ª Flight Unit and the An-124 cargo plane with tail number RA-82030, which were previously implicated by the U.S. Treasury Department in sanctions related to the transfer of ballistic missiles from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Despite these allegations, the precise nature and timing of such transactions remain unknown.
Tumblr media
Tupolev Tu-154 (RA-85843).
The US and South Korea accused the Kim Jong Un regime of providing the Kremlin with missiles, artillery grenades and other weapons to replenish the Russian armed forces while it uses equipment and ammunition in its invasion of Ukraine. Both Moscow and Pyongyang denied that such transfers are taking place.
The recent flight activity coincides with the escalation of tensions in the region, following the North Korean ballistic missile test conducted by leader Kim Jong Un. Although the specific cargo carried by the Russian aircraft remains unknown, intelligence reports suggest the potential transport of short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs).
The ability of the An-124 cargo plane to carry large and heavy weapon systems further amplifies the seizures around the purpose of these secret flights.
Tumblr media
South Korea's Chosun News TV reported on the cargo plane on Saturday, citing a comment from an anonymous source of "ROK-US intelligence authority", but not including details such as model, final number or moment.
The source would have said that intelligence agencies caught the plane carrying 15-meter-long cargo "supposedly SRBMs". Allegedly, these were Hwasong-11 series missiles (KN-23).
The apparent stop of the aircraft in Pyongyang occurred a few days after the North Korean supreme leader, Kim Jong Un, presided over his country's first ballistic missile test in two months.

thoughts about DPRK
I did my third journey around the China/North Korea border recently. Things have changed quite a bit in the region. The DPRK seems to forbid its people to walk anywhere near the Chinese border in Sinuiju. Where there used to vibrant street life there is ghost town. Where there used to be dozens of fishing boats plying the Yalu River, there are moored still boats without imhbitants. It's sad.
Those who have seen my North Korea photos before may think that the people of Sinuiju don't want people photographing them like zoo animals. I have heard this type of critiicism before. As a candid photographer I do respect the perspective and I am senitive to it. I always try to make images of the things ans people I see with respect for and even, a love for individuality and humanity.
That said, I want to be clear that the reason people are no longer able to walk near the Sinuiju waterfront is because the DPRK doesm't want the Koreans looking at th, or yearning for the e glitzy life in China.
So, as a result of this rather dreary situation, I had to explore the countryside and farm life of North Korea. I did okay and came back with some interesting images to work with.
Unfortunately,I am a little strict about this blog being an urban blog. So, I will be posting over time here, some photographs of the North Korean architectural and industrial landsacpe, which are mostly devoid of people sadly. In my opinion they still have some value as a view of this post-covid repressive moment in the hermit kingdom. I will probably also post some older images I had made in previous years.
As far as farm and pastoral photos, I will be sharing some of these on side blog, titled "The Drunken Boat." This blog is devoted to nature photography, but is fitting for pastoral imagery as well. Perhaps, even for those farms with barbed wire around the perimeter.... we will see...
May the intolerable and China backed tyrants of the DPRK finally collapse and may the Korean people be reunited again in a free society. Freedom and Democracy for all...

i finished "enigmatic world of chosunhwa" (bg muhn) and didn't love the book nor its takes on dprk.
the author revealed great points on how skilled north korean artists are, their composition, their mastery of ink wash paintings, the use of beutifully intense color usage on such a fragile canvas (fiber paper) -- in response to the common refrain of dprk being insular thus stunted in art and whatever various industries.
really liked the points on how chosonhwa differentiates itself from south korean painters, chinese painters, japanese, etc.. in that theres
Strong dramatic colors in ink wash painting – whereas intense coloring is typically used for accents
Facial expressions - heroic resolution, showing perseverance of the coreans to make dprk history
Peasants, workers - smiling, laughing despite hard labor, depict NK dignity (deeply rooted in DPRK, separates its social realism from China, Soviet Union)
but he still kind of doubles down on the common ideas that:
dprk art, or chosonhwa, is (he doesn't say this exactly, but that's the vibe)...glorifying their reality aka people are actually not happen in dprk, etc. well maybe if the US/west hadn't sanctioned/starved them...things would be better....
he says often in these monumental dprk pieces that composition is tweaked from the reference photo/scene/image to promote the ideology of the state.
my thoughts are getting messy, but i think i get the hunch that he finds socialist realism paradoxical because it's not real because the state sanctions some pieces or makes some requirements here and there for artists to adjust. ex: dprk artist draws up a bus scene. arthur argues that the dprk artist made subjects faces smile more than they actually were to promote the idea that living in the dprk is great. this is obviously a non starter when you think about western prop which is just horrendous
