Miss Fisher Con 2023 Session - Queens of Crime
Tumblr media
Check out this great session, coming to Miss Fisher Con this summer!
Queens of Crime: Christie, Sayers, Marsh, and Allingham
Phryne Fisher as written by Kerry Greenwood follows in the footsteps of many famous writers and their equally famous detectives.
The “rules” of detective fiction were established in part by a group of four writers known as the Four Queens of Crime: Agatha Christie, Dorothy L Sayers, Ngaio Marsh, and Margery Allingham. Christie is the most famous, but all four women contributed in their own way to the rich traditions and history that today’s detective fiction builds upon.

Unnatural Death
Unnatural Death by #DorothyLSayers #CrimeFiction #BookReview
A review of Unnatural Death by Dorothy L Sayers – 231013 Ah, Lord Peter Wimsey! You either love him or hate him with his eccentric mannerisms. This is his third outing, originally published in 1927 and going by the alternative title of The Dawson Pedigree in the United States. Although a bit of a mixed bag, it is an enjoyable enough read. At the crux of the case is something straight out of a…

Dorothy Leigh Sayers ( 13 June 1893 – 17 December 1957) was an English crime writer and poet. She was also a student of classical and modern languages. Via Wikipedia
"Dorothy L. Sayers is now famous for her Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane detective series, but she was equally well known during her life for an essay asking “Are Women Human?”
Women’s rights were expanding rapidly during Sayers’s lifetime; she and her friends were some of the first women to receive degrees from Oxford.
Yet, as historian Mo Moulton reveals, it was clear from the many professional and personal obstacles they faced that society was not ready to concede that women were indeed fully human.
Dubbing themselves the Mutual Admiration Society, Sayers and her classmates remained lifelong friends and collaborators as they fought for a truly democratic culture that acknowledged their equal humanity. A celebration of feminism and female friendship, The Mutual Admiration Society offers crucial insight into Dorothy L. Sayers and her world."

🇬🇧 I finished one of my all time favourite books, but I read it for the first time in English. I just love #busmanshoneymoon by #dorothylsayers so much. It’s a very interesting case and Peter‘s and Harriet‘s love is just amazing and great. And this #edition is soo cute. #currentlyreading #bookstagram #booklover #crimefiction #britishcrimefiction #littlegingerbookninja #vintage https://www.instagram.com/p/CWYZAl5sKA4/?utm_medium=tumblr

What can I say about the Lord Peter Wimsey series that hasn’t been said, eloquently and at length, by other lovers of Golden Age mystery fiction, 20th century British literature, sparkling wit, and smart, character-driven romance? But they are high up on the list of the #booksthatmademe, so I’m going to try. . Despite being fond of mysteries in general and historical British mysteries in particular, I didn’t know these books existed until I was in my early twenties. But once I’d read the series, and particularly the four Wimsey/Vane books beginning with STRONG POISON and continuing on through HAVE HIS CARCASE, GAUDY NIGHT and BUSMAN’S HONEYMOON, Dorothy L. Sayers instantly became one of my all-time favourite authors, and a huge and lasting influence on me as a writer. . It’s not that Sayers is flawless, or that every aspect of her stories captivates me equally. But what she absolutely nailed, for me, was creating two main characters who were fascinatingly complex, delightfully clever, and lovable despite (and sometimes because of) their brokenness. Both Peter and Harriet have been wounded in different ways, and both wear different armour to hide it. Peter is breezy and glib-tongued, while Harriet is guarded and prickly. But they’re constantly challenged and gradually disarmed by one another as they work to solve the mysteries presented to them, and I never get tired of seeing those walls gradually come down. . I don’t make a secret of the fact that A POCKET FULL OF MURDER and A LITTLE TASTE OF POISON owe a lot to these books. Nobody else would write me the YA Peter and Harriet-inspired book I kept asking for, so I ended up writing it as MG instead. The Uncommon Magic duology is peppered with allusions to the Wimsey novels, it takes place in a similar time period, and while Quiz and Isaveth are not the same characters as Peter and Harriet, they never would have existed without them. . If you like mysteries even a little bit and you haven’t read the Wimsey books, you should. . . . #bookstagram #bookish #BookRecommendations #mysteries #dorothylsayers #lordpeterwimsey #harrietvane #classicmysteries #britishmystery #goldenagemystery #writinginspirations https://www.instagram.com/p/B_EKwkZgwQl/?igshid=1s39m4je49yts

This #bookhaul is fully ridiculous, especially considering how little reading I’ve been getting done. Sometimes I go to the bookstore and can barely commit to a single book. Today was not one of those days. . . Actually, I went to pick up the book from my #witmonth book exchange, got immersed in shopping, then left without picking up the book. I guess I will have to go back in a few days? I did made a few other witmonth selections, though — THE CHANDELIER by Clarice Lispector, and HAPPINESS, AS SUCH by Natalia Ginzburg. Funnily enough, I think I bought my first book by both of them during last year’s Women in Translation month. . . I have been super into baking doughnuts lately, and have been plowing through random recipes on Pinterest, so this DOUGHNUTS cookbook seemed like the obvious next step. . . Pretty much everything else was an impulse purchase. It was my first post-quarantine bookstore trip without my kids, and I guess I got a little carried away. But I had been waiting for THE DEEP to come out in paperback, and my cousin had just been telling me how mush she loved GAUDY NIGHT. And I have heard so many good things about MEM, finding a used copy in such good condition was a delight. And SHAME was maybe because this month’s read the world challenge is India. Which leaves INTIMATIONS, which I picked up because it was tiny and also Zadie Smith and it sounded fascinating. . . I need a readathon, or to declare one of my own, and soon. . . #gaudynight #dorothylsayers #zadiesmith #intimations #happinessassuch #nataliaginzburg #thechandelier #claricelispector #shame #salmanrushdie #thedeep #riverssolomon #mem #bethanycmorrow #doughnuts #laraferroni https://www.instagram.com/p/CD7SSQ3ATBH/?igshid=2vngifugj6yt

Currently reading (okay, struggling through) this marvellous allegory. I am really enjoying it, and appreciating the spiritual edification Dante offers, and the helpfulness and wit of Sayers’ notes, but I have a lot of other things too, so it’s hard to let go of them and sink into this. #dantealighieri #thedivinecomedy #purgatorio #dorothylsayers #literature #medievalliterature #100daysofdante https://www.instagram.com/p/CZrBkdgpmmw5-UTa6OiyeFszVdpDmJXx1pClMk0/?utm_medium=tumblr

Clouds Of Witness
Lord Peter Wimsey fights to preserve the family's honour and risks his life in the process in an entertaining piece of #CrimeFiction from the pen of #DorothyLSayers #amreading
A review of Clouds of Witness by Dorothy L Sayers – 20230330 Lord Peter Wimsey is not everybody’s cup of tea either as a character or an amateur sleuth, I am immediately taken back to Ian Carmichael’s portrayal of him whenever I come across him in print, but he does get involved in some entertaining, if somewhat improbable, escapades. Clouds of Witness is the second in Dorothy L Sayers’ series,…

'Whose Body?' (Dorothy L. Sayers, 1920)
Dear Lily, this was my first Lord Peter Wimsey Mystery written by this talented author. I found that this novel was highly original to any crime fiction I've ever read before as the language was more sophisticated and the murder more complicated. The amateur detective must find out 'whose body' has found itself in Mr Alfred Thipps' bathroom and which brutal individual has deposited it there.
A thoroughly enjoyable read, a perfect effortless mean of escapism.
Give it a go! Love, Me x
