There’s a lot going on here that I frankly don’t have the energy to cover, but here’s some food for thought.
I’ve been thinking about the current state of the fandom, and the actions Dorian has been taking. It’s been putting me off because for the most part, there’s a gray area in which fandom operates in any piece of media; and Dorian is effectively meddling with that gray area in a way that is driving fans away. It’s been bothering me on a level I couldn’t really put my finger on.
And then I remembered, Dorian may be the copyright holders and owners of the game. But they aren’t the creators. This is where the disconnect is, and why they’re overstepping.
Legally they are within their right to do (most of) of what they are doing. It’s cruddy and violates a lot of the unspoken rules that exist between the fans and the creators, but they can do it. It’s very obvious that it’s targeted right now but that’s an entirely different topic that I don’t think I can comfortably discuss.
It’s interesting because there is another fandom I know of that is seeing (if it hasn’t concluded already) a slightly similar problem. The Undertale fandom has recently flocked around a fan game, Undertale Yellow—which used music from the original game. As far as I’m aware, the creator—Toby Fox—was fine with it. However, the copyright holders were not. Materium Music’s CEO did not want to allow the release of UTY’s album on YouTube and other streaming services even though Toby Fox approved of it. The soundtrack had many original elements but reused motifs and other fragments from Undertale’s soundtrack.
Sound familiar?
But while UTY had the original creator helping fight for their rights as fan creators, we do not. And so the copyright holders, Dorian, are doing what they can to protect the assets they own with very little thought for the creations outside of their own platform. The time and effort that goes into creating. The beautiful dedication to the game that, while they own, they did not create and as such they cannot appreciate it fully.

frembly remembly dorian era "canon" is not canon regardless of intention
yes, even if they finally canonize your favorite blorbo headcanon
yes, even if by some miracle it's good
they are ultimately a fanfiction platform and therefore on the same level as us groundlings, take everything w a grain of salt

Dorian really be making moves against outside-of-app fantales while not actually implementing updates to their own app that would make content made in it look and feel as good as many of us would like.
They're making all these aggressive moves to get more people to use their app, but they don't provide a better foundation for creators they claim to value. Several streaming updates last year, a whole new "trivia mode" that sure is great for engagement, but I still can't set a sprite to be displayed in the middle of the screen.
Creative people shouldn't be staying on your app because it's their only option for their project. They should want to stay because it's good. For some people it already is good enough. Want more people? Make it better.

Shit's fucked! But not in the way we thought it was?
I am always open to new info, and here is what I know as of about 12 hours ago (I would've posted this earlier but we had to get ready for work by the end of the conversation)
We spent the morning messaging a couple people at Dorian to figure out what the hell is going on with the takedowns, because one of our friends had fanart taken down even though it didn't break any rules. This is becoming a pattern.
Tumblr media
Specific email address and name edited out, but here's what we got from them.
Asrabounding also reached out to us himself.
Dorian does keep a record of what they take down. The fanart that hasn't broken any rules is not in their records, especially the stuff on instagram which is where Rhaz was hit. So there's a possibility of someone else reporting posts without permission on Dorian's behalf. (Or instagram's bots are broken, or both.)
If your work has been taken down for copyright infringement you can send an email to [email protected] to see if it was actually Dorian or not. Because if it wasn't Dorian, someone is going rogue and causing trouble and that's also a huge problem.
Believe me, or don't believe me, I don't really care. This is just the info Rhaz and I were given this morning.

I am so fucking tired of the arcana, of dorian, of the fandom, of everything
It doesn't feel worth it to stay in this fandom anymore. I'm more stressed every time i open my phone and see that dorian did a new thing. I can't do it anymore. I am in fandoms so i can feel joy and connect with people who enjoy the things i do, but it isn't enjoyable anymore even when I'm talking to the people who agree with me.
The arcana is more trouble then it's worth. I might still post art or other content around the arcana but I'll try my best to move on from it as much as i can. Fuck Dorian, fuck anyone who says that Dorian didn't ruin The Arcana, it did and I'm tired of pretending that it didn't, I'm tired of trying to see the bright side. I'm just tired.

Brainrot Housekeeping: A little note about Dorian
This is my heads-up that I've decided to try messing around on their platform and translating some of my headcanons into the Arcana's visual novel format.
This is not a promotional post. (hence why you won't be seeing any links, story titles, or profile handles)
It's mostly so that if anybody sees something posted by an author over there using my ideas/moniker, it's probably me and not a thief. Also, this blog is far and away my priority over that - if I start to feel overwhelmed or burnt out, that's going to be the first thing I stop doing. Not this :)
I'm putting more thoughts below the cut since the main point of this post is to be transparent about my activity to avoid misunderstandings:
I've been in conversation with plenty of people about Dorian. I've heard from people whose lives were transformed for the better because of it, I've heard from people with mixed feelings, I've heard from people whose lives were wrecked by it. It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone who's been on my page for a while that I'm fairly skeptical of them myself and don't always see eye-to-eye with them on how things seem to be run.
Anybody who's talked to me personally about it knows that I have boatloads more opinions, but I realized that those are based off of what I've heard much more than off of what I've experienced. So for transparency's sake, here are my reasons for trying this out:
First, the most important thing I've learned to do is to try encountering something for myself when I keep hearing and developing strong opinions about it. Sticking to this personal value is what got me out of Rai's server and influence (if you don't know and you want to know, read my pinned "to the arcana fandom" post) and ultimately what helped me get the resources I needed to help my friends get out of serious danger too. If I want to join the conversation about the clear divide between Dorian's vision for the Arcana and the fandom built around the original game, I have to try both sides out for myself.
Second, I'm a curious person and it seems like a new way to fuck around and find out (something I do constantly, though I rarely show it on here :P). I'm a creative, I love these characters, and the chance to see my own words in the original format sounds like fun.
To finish off, these are the goals and parameters I'm setting myself when it comes to however active I end up being over there. I'm putting them here again for transparency, but mainly to help me keep myself accountable:
My main goal is to try a new experience and have fun in the process. To do that, I'm going to keep my mind open without losing critical thinking and only make what I feel like making and when I feel like making it
Nothing I create is going to be motivated by a desire to be "successful". I'm already successful - I have a steady job IRL, a group of amazing friends, and this gift of a page that lets me be creative and find joy with other people around one of my many interests
Being active over there is going to be a bottom priority. If my tasks are getting to be too much, that will be the first to go because the only value I place in it at this time is experiental
If I find I can't stick to these goals, whether it be motivation, mentality, or just a loss of interest, I'll stop my activity over there and re-evaluate what I'm doing vs what I want to be doing and why
If I encounter something that's deeply concerning to me, I'll attempt to address it proactively through the proper channels available to me. If those concerns remain unaddressed and I think people need to know about it, I'll talk about it openly and honestly
I won't use my blog or server to promote any work I publish over there. Concurrently, I'll do my best to avoid any promotion off of the Dorian app
That's all from me for now about this! I'll be linking it in my pinned post so people who want to know more about me can look at it, but I won't be putting it on the arcana tag because I don't think it's relevant at this time.
Cheers!

Alright I’m joining the complaint bandwagon here.
I’ll be honest I was fine with the Community Tab and I could handle the pop-ups at the start. I get it, Dorian wants users to check out their app. There’s plenty of advertisement for it, I’m sure it works well.
So why are they adding two new links to NON-DAILY events to the Dailies screen? These could fit perfectly as a regular pop-up, or in the community tab.
I also want to touch on the change to the Tales button. They swapped it so that Tales is the smaller one and the larger one takes you to Dorian. It irks me, a lot.
They said they wouldn’t touch it. Now it’s being turned into an advertising platform and losing the charm and magic that it originally had when I first got it.

So. The figurines. Some definitely look better than others, but ngl I might be interested in a few of 'em.
However, quite odd that they didn't show any photos of the actual, printed items that people are buying. 3D model screenshots are good and all, but what do the items look like? That's not the same as with charms/prints. Especially on 30mm minis, some details definitely have to be sacrificed, and quality might differ quite a bit depending on the print and material.
And speaking of material,
Tumblr media
...well first of all, "3D printed" is a method, not material, and resin can be used in 3D printing afaik but ok.
Tumblr media
But also, what's the truth then?? Did whoever wrote that reply make an error, or is the info on the website wrong? They didn't answer my questions on IG so we just don't know yet.

so recently I've gotten into writing little one-shots on the dorian platform mostly as a means to give my brain something to do that isn't ruminating on anxiety.
I realise that not a lot of us like them as a company or as a platform (and frankly neither do I, it's just the easiest way for me to make fan tales without getting my socials nuked) and I don't want people feeling left out if they don't use the platform out of principle
That leads me to ask, what's a good alternative for sharing my fantales on other socials? I've thought about sharing the scripts on here but idk if it's the full experience. Feel free to suggest fjdkfnskf

So I was looking at the figures for the Arcana that are coming out and while I want one I noticed something….
They’re completely blank. Is that why they’re so cheap?? Cuz they’re blank resin figures??
Idk I’d rather pay more for a finished product. It’s just weird. Maybe instead of advertising them as figures like they’re a finished product they should be honest and call it a DIY or garage kit or something. That way someone who wants a finished product doesn’t spend their money on it thinking they’re getting a full figure and then ends up quite upset when they have to finish the job.
Like I had to look at the listings themselves to find the images in the ad weren’t just concepts, they’re what the product actually looks like.

WHY IS HIS HAIR SO BIG KHVDYI I MEAN HES BEAUTIFUL BUT WHAT HAPPENED HERE
Tumblr media
also his neck looks fuuuhckin tiney *gigglegiggle*
@tetsuooooooooooo ahhh yes, the new figurines XD I'd be lying if I said I wasn't looking into getting the cast when they have a fully colored option. (I may or may not be trying to help another friend get their hands on one of these current samples, if only to see what the actual product is like ^.^)
Though to be honest, after seeing Nadia's asymmetrical face especially, I keep wondering if the 3D renderings are AI generated? It might explain why the renders all look pretty accurate from the same three quarter profile/angle of the sprites, but look less like the characters from other angles, especially when you compare them to CGs with their faces at different perspectives.
I've heard that the company has had AI generated images before in official things, so I guess it wouldn't be too surprising.
edited to add - a Dorian employee has reached out to me personally to tell me that they were in contact with the company Dorian hired to design and produce the figurines, as far as they know there wasn't any AI involved, and to please change what's on my post
Either way, I hope they make the 3D files available for purchase too at some point! It would be so cool to see what creators would be able to make with access to those! ^.^
