My little vertical succulent garden was looking pretty sad-ass so I decided to give it a makeover. I've been teaching folks how to make these over @workshopsf (best little diy school ever), and through massive repetition I've learned a few hot tips. ▪ 1. Always over plant. There's no guarantees with succulent cuttings and chances are some won't take. That's life. And I kind of suspect that succulents prefer the crowded vibe. That being said... ▪ 2. Negative space is your BFF. Planting the whole space is confusing to the eye. Use preserved moss, fabric, tape, or dried flowers to break up the clusters of living plants. Also, less crap to kill. ▪ 3. Window screen fabric makes a good retainer and you'll need more soil than you think. ▪ 4. Echeveria and other rosette style succulents are made for this shiz. Load up. ▪ 5. Stop being a lazy ass and get a spray bottle. Watering these puppies with anything other than a light mist is pretty much an express train to rot town. I had to learn that the hard way an embarrassing number of times.
