Making the most of their platform

Footwear brand @drmartenofficial on instagram uses the affordances of the platform to engage with their audience. Caroline Taggs book Exploring Digital Communication: Language in Action defines affordances as “features and potential functionalities which users perceive a technology to have. These perceptions then shape how people utilise the technology and for what purposes”. One affordance of the platform I believe Dr Marten effectively exploits is hashtags. A constraint of the platform is the volume of content but hashtags on instagram overcome this. Hashtags group together posts and make them traceable to the brand. Dr Marten In their post uses multiple hashtags in the caption of their post. They use #DMsChallenge and #DIYDOCS.

These hashtags are being effectively exploited to not only communicate with their target audience but it also encourages users on the platform to create and post content for their brand. Using multiple hashtags makes it easier to outreach to different audiences. These “compact signifiers (e.g. using the same hashtag), are utilized to build up agentic communities by linking previously unconnected users based on commonly held attitudes” (Lüders, Dinkelberg, and Quayle, 2022. p.4. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.actpsy.2022.103643). Someone who has never heard of Dr Marten might see someone post their #DMsChallenge then they become part of the target audience. 

Dr Marten in the same post encourages this in the hope that “these connections become more influential the wider and faster the content spreads” (Lüders, Dinkelberg, and Quayle, 2022. p.4). They do this by reposting and tagging, another affordance of the platform. They have reposted someones #DIYDOCS submission for their #DMsChallenge on their page. By using the feature of uploading an image and reposting this encourages more of their target audience to engage with the hashtag.

Using the tagging feature also gives recognition to the member of their target audience that engaged with the hashtag. This will in turn encourage more members of their target audience to tag them, which is emphasised in their caption by saying “tag us in your posts for a chance for your own art to be featured here”. This will expand their reach and strengthen their connection with their target audience, leading to increased brand loyalty and engagement.

They have also left their comment section open, another affordance of the platform to allow feedback on the post. In Scharlach and Hallinan study they assert that “the hindered value affordances of the Comment feature point to the negative consequences of openness” (Scharlach and Hallinan, 2023, p.4 https://doi.org/10.1093/jcmc/zmad040). I can see how openness can potentially hinder positive community engagement which can reflect upon the company as a whole. But this is not exemplified in the Dr Martens post. I believe the value in an open comment section that allows for comments, questions and growth outweighs the “negative consequences” (Scharlach and Hallinan, 2023, p.4). Instagrams filtering feature can also combat any negativity creating a space solely for their target audience.

Reg and Laminate Flooring

Job 1 was to lay some laminate flooring in the spare room and after hunting round a few DIY sheds. Reg was not only bemused by the range of options but staggered by the prices.

He clicked in and got 17 square metres delivered in no time, at half price, and then used the DIY Doctor page on laying laminate flooring to get the floor down in no time.

Having laid the floor properly with the expansion gap around the edge it was time for Reg to fit the cover strip around the edges. Usually this is fixed to the skirting with small oval nails or panel pins but Reg had just read the DIY Doctor product review on the new Grab Adhesive from Gorilla.

Applying a thin bead of Gorilla Grab Adhesive to the back of the bead, he pushed it onto the skirting and gave it a little wiggle... Hey presto, it did what it said on the tube - and grabbed!!

Laminate flooring beads is just one of the dozens of jobs that are made a lot easier with Gorilla Glue. It is taking the market by storm and not because of the massive advertising campaign but because it's absolutely brilliant. No fiddly nails or black thumb nails, just a tube of Gorilla and a sealant gun. Job done!

Reg and the TV Bracket

Next job for Reg, is setting up the TV on the very special Tranquil Mount TV Bracket which is designed to keep the TV out of the way when it's not being watched. Space is the name of the game in the Diyer household and just like every other home in the UK the moment there is a gap on a flat surface, it gets filled!

The difference that Tranquil Mount offers over all other TV brackets is that it is a mantel mount, designed to be fitted over a fireplace or any other piece of furniture close to the wall. The bracket pulls out as well as down and gives a great clearance over sideboards and the like.

Reg first saw the TV mount in the DIY Doctor video product review and couldn't believe that something so versatile could be so easy to fit. With only 4 holes to drill and all fixing supplied it took no time at all for Reg to have the TV up and running.

About lunchtime on Easter Monday Reg finally got to put his feet up wondering how on earth this 4 day DIY fest every year could possibly be called a holiday!
