After reading the Tangled comic "The Madness of Princess Narcissa" and seeing this actually canon Disciple of Zhan Tiri kid, I just HAD to draw her with my Melina! Danielle seems like an interesting character, I wish we got to see more of her. I definitely have to put her in one of my fics sometime!

I have a question that I don't know if you can answer, but I'm asking, anyway!
In Moonlight, have you any plans for any of the disciples to return?
In canon, Sugracha was yeeted into a portal and Matthews promised to return before turning to dust. Neither felt too permanent and seeing how you utilize so many under-utilized characters, I have to wonder.
What about the not-so-loyal disciples who found eternal life?
I definitely plan to play around with the Disciples in Moonrise! Zhan Tiri is an extremely important character in the story and to me it makes no sense for her not to have her Disciples back at some point.
In my AU I made it so that Sugracha wasn't sent into the Lost Realm with ZT because it'd be bad for my storyline, so she was arrested in Painter's Block and escaped when Ruddiger's monstrous form damaged the dungeons, allowing her and many others to run away.
I won't be saying much else besides the fact that both she and Tromus will show up eventually :] !!!

what do you like from the tangled comics? do you wish any parts had been adapted into the show?
I really really really liked that there were agents of Zhan Tiri basically everywhere, and Rapunzel never knew when she was going to come across a new disciple. I wish that had been the case in the series, that there had been more mundane disciples who may or may not have known what they'd gotten themselves into, rather than just sticking to the three we had.
In video game terms, I wish there had been more monsters to fight, and not just a couple boss battles leading up to the Big Bad.
I also really love Candor the Phoenix. Rapunzel having a connection to a phoenix really makes me ;u;

What characters do you think are bigger than their stories? Like, their original stories act almost like a prison, stopping them from reaching their true potential?
scream laughs in the Entire Cast of TTS 💀
which. it’s a disney princess cartoon, of course the character writing isn’t good—except, in a lot of individual episodes in s1-2, the character writing is actually really fucking good, and even in s3 when the narrative finally cratered in on itself there are traces, fingerprints, pottery shards of a story that could have been incredible if it were not doomed from the start by the fact of it being a disney cartoon.
like.
the writing team behind tts looked at rapunzel. looked at tangled. this disney princess story about a girl who grew up alone in a tower with nobody but a lizard and her viciously cruel, manipulative, abusive kidnapper, this girl who in the film is portrayed as a pure, sweet, innocent ray of sunshine. right.
and they went: the ray of sunshine is a shield she does not know how to put down, and this girl learned ALL of her social skills from an emotionally abusive manipulator, and now she’s a princess and a myth and a miracle and there is only one person in this story who can meaningfully tell her no.
and then they went: let’s give her a best friend who’s a little bit older, ambitious, hard-working, socially deft, and common. let’s make that best friend her lady-in-waiting on top of being a maid, and miserable in both those roles because all she wants is to be a guard like her dad. and let’s really lean into how she cannot say no to the princess, who learned 100% of her social skills from mother fucking gothel.
the core conflict of every single keyframe episode in this show is about the slow and painful death of that friendship, by rapunzel’s hand, until cassandra goes fuck this and literally! LITERALLY! steals rapunzel’s destiny, steals her structural role as the protagonist of the story, and throws herself into the arms of an Actual Demon because the demon is the first!!! person she’s ever!!! met who treats cassandra like she’s worth anything outside of being an appendage of the lost princess. and it tailspins from there, but like—HELLO!?
rapunzel the disney princess of all time. she barbecues her best friend’s hand with a rotting curse by accident and then has a whole episode about aggressively Not Apologizing. cassandra ends up apologizing to HER! for lashing out after HOURS! of rapunzel trying to corner her into talking about it. (note, not in a protagonist-centered-morality way: the episode begins with putting the reality that cass is disabled now because of rapunzel front-and-center, portrays rapunzel’s anger at cass as irrational and unfair, and makes a point of having cass say she’s still angry at the end; all of this is meant to be the death knell of the friendship and the next thing that happens is the arc where the Actual Demon befriends cass by being nice to her.) it’s fucking GREAT.
honorable mentions to: eugene “afterthought” fitzherbert, lance “he’s the funny black guy so him getting gruesomely almost murdered is about eugene’s romantic woes actually” strongbow, varian “convenient plot device” lastname, queen “the only alive mom in the series, we’ll throw her a crumb of characterization once every other season” arianna, adira “couldn’t figure out what to do with her in s3 so we wrote her out and then turned her into a mind controlled mook” lastname, and zhan tiri “all the depth and complexity of soggy cardboard” the ancient evil demon who nonetheless managed to be THEE best part of season three. and the separatists of saporia. and sugracha (best disciple). and tromus. and lady “we cast laura fucking benanti as a pirate anti-monarchist revolutionarybut we’re not going to let her sing, or appear in more than three episodes” caine.

I haven't gotten to read your Tangled Sisters AU yet, but I really love the idea! Honestly the only thing I like about Cassandra being Gothel's daughter is the AU potential of if she was raised in the tower with Rapunzel, so it's really neat to see somebody fully tap into that potential in such a committed way!
Oh, I kinda agree, but not fully!
Obviously, I agree that the AU potential of them being raised together in the tower is just amazing! I love AUs, I love exploring how characters change and how that causes a domino effect of changes!
But I do think there was more potential to the Gothel-daughter dynamic than people realise... Just obviously not in the way it was done.
The way it was done was very weird because Cass didn't need to be Gothel's daughter to become a villain. We had a reason! She was sick of warning of dangers, being ignored and then in the Great Tree being the one injured due to those decisions. She wanted to be heard. That was a way more compelling reason to betray the gang than finding out about your mother xD
Buuuuut... we do see Gothel as Zhan Tiri's disciple. And we see Zhan Tiri use Cassandra as a means to an end. Those two things could have been connected so easily! Gothel having a child not to love it but to fulfill a purpose later on in life is very in line with that woman. Zhan Tiri having this really long and convoluted plan, sure!
But the heartbreak that would come with being created for a purpose you aren't on board with. That feeling of lack of autonomy when you realise you are nothing more than a tool, that you've always been a tool. Especially for a character like Cassandra whose literal first introduction revolved around the idea of 'you should be able to do what you want'.
I would probably have to do an entire separate very long post if I truly wanted to talk about how this could have been done cause this isn't just changes to season 3, but hopefully you get the gist.
Other smaller bits of potential are if Cass were perhaps actually drawn to the moonstone because of how much sundrop magic her mother had consumed over the years...
Let Eugene and Cass revisit their chat from Eugene vs Cassandra later in S2 and reveal Cassandra really cares about who she is and where she comes from so that the reveal is a bit more impactful? Like, it isn't just random, but an answer to a question!
Like... There definitely was potential... But in the context of season 3 I really have no clue why they did it xD
Anyway, sorry for that ramble! I've been thinking a lot about missed potential lately...
Thank you for the ask :D

Okay, now that I’ve had a chance to gather some thoughts about Season 2, I can’t help but feel like Tangled the Series is just largely disinterested in its own lore
Season 1 was mostly slice of life with the looming threat of the Black Rocks in the background and that worked out to the story’s favor imo. Rapunzel getting used to life after the tower is the main focus, and while she is concerned about the rocks, she is forbidden from talking about them and has reason to believe her father (an Adult and, also, the King) will step in as needed. So her largely refusing the call works, and it also helps set up Varian’s character development (and painful break the cutie) because he is looped into the mystery, but unlike Rapunzel, doesn’t have the luxury of sitting back and trusting the Adults because the Black Rocks are actively destroying his village and also he learns the hard way the adults are either useless or malicious. And then his father gets trapped in amber, the audience learns that Quirin is more connected to the Black Rocks than believed, and Varian brings the plot to Rapunzel because there’s no more room to wait around.
Season 1 was largely a set up season. Giving us a lot of mystery but focusing mainly on the character development.
So Season 2 should focus more on those mysteries right? The setup is perfect! The Dark Kingdom! The Brotherhood of the Moonstone! A mysterious scroll macguffin quest! Zhan Tiri and disciples! (who did not actually seem connected to the Black Rocks until the monkey’s reveals tbh)
There was so much opportunity for lore! And NOTHING WAS DONE WITH IT!
The Dark Kingdom? Gets two flashbacks and then has zero relevance until the finale.
The Brotherhood? Badass lady Adira determined to unite the Sundrop and Moonstone. Shows up to help a few times and be cryptic. Hector - refuses to believe in the Sundrop and will keep the Moonstone safe at all costs. Has one appearance and isn’t even the final bad guy of that episode. Quirin and Varian - Sirs not appearing in this season. What was Quirin’s stance on the whole thing? Why was he in Corona while the other two were outside? Why does Adira know who Varian is? Has she ever met him?
Speaking of Varian - never mind his whole connection to the Black Rocks and the Dark Kingdom via the Brotherhood for a sec. Varian’s complete absence in this season is really frustrating when he is established to be the ONLY character who knows how to read the scroll. So the scroll is completely useless this season despite the importance in gathering it.
(although given what apparently happens offscreen with him, I don’t mind his absence too much actually - one of the show’s strengths is in what it doesn’t show, and Varian getting mixed up with a rebel group and taking over Corona is kind of hilarious and horrifying and definitely not selling me on Frederic being a responsible king. You had ONE JOB SIR)
So Season 2 proceeded to almost completely ignore its own lore outside the midpoint and finale in favor of various random filler adventures. Some were cute, most were Filler. But at least we had good character development for Cassandra, slowly building up her frustrations with the situation and Rapunzel that don’t get addressed, and her struggling with the loss of her dream in light of her crippling arm injury -
Wait no, that didn’t happen either.
Most conflicts are resolved in the same episode they come up. And for the one that isn’t...
I couldn’t help noticing that immediately after the Great Tree episode we had an episode focused on two characters with a visible disability and the importance of dreams and refusing to give up on them and no Cassandra focus at all (did she even have lines in that episode?). And then next episode - one scene of her practicing with her other hand. And the episode after that - she has full mastery apparently.
Her hand injury is just........... mentioned a few times but has no real impact...
(Although much like Rapunzel not checking on Varian in Season 1, I’m really shaking my head at her not even feeling the slightest guilt about the Great Tree incident. Really writers?)

So I just found an old description of this exact concept lurking on an unused writing app on my phone:
Sugracha wasn’t the only follower of Zhan Tiri who was unwittingly freed during the snow storm. Though Zhan Tiri herself may be gone, she assured many years ago that her disciples would be able to revive her if the worst happened, using a divine incantation and an ancient power once believed to be nothing more than a legend. The problem with the last resort that was thought to be foolproof, though, is that that power has just become a lot more difficult to obtain, thanks to a certain pair who are destined to thrive alongside each other. The perfect oppurtunity for the disciples to strike has come along sooner than expected, though, in the form of a lone ex-handmaiden wandering the world without her counterpart, seeking her true self. Cassandra, eager to follow adventure’s call, may be about to destroy the place she saved from herself - and this time, drag the rest of the world down with her…

okay okay this one’s more self indulgent but I’ve never been able to resist throwing OCs into things and the dynamic of a ZT disciple who’s a complete washed-up reject who’s survived this long only by avoiding anything ZT related was too good to pass up

Inordinately amused by the fact that one of the first things Zhan Tiri did after regaining corporeal form was carve a wax effigy of Gothel.

Flynn Rider is quickly and unfortunately learning that spending time with Varian gets him jump-scared because he has a horrible habit of climbing up into trees and dropping down on you when you least expect it like a freakin' spider. His pet/friend/housemate Regulus, the cursed racoon, seems to get a kick out of Flynn being scared out of his skin by Mr. Too-Long-Hair. Maybe he should give him a scare. -- Guess what? The pose program I use for reference has pole-dancing poses in the sports section! I can do so much Sun Varian art, because this guy is even worse with his hair action than Sun Rapunzel is. XD

I've been rewatching TTS episodes (the youtube Disney Channel finally released all s1 episodes in my country!) and I realized that in Painter's Block, Xavier explains that Demanitus captured evil spirits and kept them prisoner in the hidden mountain chamber that holds the Demanitus Device.
We see this scene:
Tumblr media
Sugracha's spirit was released after the "block" in the middle of this screenshot was broken. We see that there's more "blocks" beside it, so this combined with Xavier's explanation leads me to believe there's more spirits (people?) like Sugracha and Tromus kept prisoner inside them, and the fact all of them most likely have Zhan Tiri's crest on them implies to me that there are way, more followers of Zhan Tiri than we saw in the show.
Sugracha and Tromus may have been only two of her Disciples, the only ones who previously followed Demanitus.
I wonder how many Disciples he locked inside that chamber...

I know you already talked about Adira, but what are some other things that felt like they'd be a bigger deal when they debuted but kinda got shafted? I, for one, think of the scroll, which kinda served its purpose, got destroyed, and left more questions than answers, and Varians connection to the brotherhood most of all. I don't even think we got a scene of Quirin telling Varian about the brotherhood, but by the season 3 finale, Varian already knows. That was a conversation we missed.
I agree about the scroll. There is so much in the design that I thought was going to be touched upon. Like this section:
Tumblr media
What does all that mean? Control over plants and animals? I thought the combined Sundrop and Moonstone were going to represent this whole... power of creation thing, or something.
Frankly, I've never been particularly interested in the "Varian's connection to the Brotherhood" angle. Quirin's life as a member of the Brotherhood is well and truly behind him, and Varian isn't actually "connected" to them at all. They're people his dad used to work with, long before he was born. Does this mean I don't think they'd be interested in getting to know him and vice versa? No. At least, not necessarily. But while Adira was clearly aware of Varian, she made no attempt to make contact, even when the kid was completely alone. But I never thought that would be a big deal in the story, which is what you're asking me.
I thought Lady Caine was going to be a much bigger deal than she turned out to be. As the primary villain of the pilot movie -- and with a very good point and driving force behind her -- I definitely thought there'd be more to her than the occasional escape and needing to be stopped and returned to prison. (Ever think how she and the other criminals took over the prison barge, but there's not a guard to be seen? She killed those people, or had them killed, and threw them overboard.) I thought she was going to join forces with Andrew in jail, since they had a common goal. (And yeah, by the end of S1, I thought Varian was going to be involved in that gang as well.)
I know I've talked about it recently, but I thought the hourglass in "No Time Like the Past," the shell in "Day of the Animals" and the dragon egg in "Pascal's Dragon" we all pointing toward Matthews laying a subtle attack of chaos on Corona, trying to weaken it from the inside. I thought he and Sugracha were going to make a return, even if it was just because they were still trapped in the Lost Realm, and would spend part of the finale making the lives of the heroes who got trapped there hell (instead of the goofy nonsense we got instead). I expected this so much that every time they weren't used or mentioned, I expected them to show up farther along down the road.
I thought we were going to learn what exactly Gothel's role was with the Disciples of Zhan Tiri. I thought they'd explain why she split from them (if she split from them) and talk about how her greed over the Sundrop flower resulted in her not getting a powerful spirit form or something. I thought the fact that she was one of them was going to be a bigger deal.
I thought Cassandra's burned arm was going to be a bigger deal, especially considering how it was the catalyst that caused Cassandra to close herself off from Rapunzel and let Zhan Tiri in. But once it served its purpose to cause a rift between them, it didn't even matter that it had been so severely injured. That's even the hand she grabbed the Moonstone with, and the glove on that side was blue, making it stand out. I thought the decay was going to be spreading over her body under the suit, and the Moonstone was going to be the only thing keeping her strong and well. But the injured arm didn't even matter anymore.
I thought Eugene's past was going to be a bigger deal. He knew Lady Caine. His best friend from the orphanage and thieving days returned as a supporting character. He has an ex-fiancée, who is the daughter of the most powerful man in the criminal underworld outside of Corona. But the next time we saw Stalyan, she didn't even have anything to say about her dad who, the last time we saw him, was dying from a spider bite. Not only did she not mention him, she was even semi-reformed (and not by Eugene). Eugene's entire past was only really touched on here and there. I appreciate that they shed any light on it at all, but it was much less than I was anticipating.
There's probably more, but I slept terribly last night and I've got a headache, so this is all I can think of right now.

This is just me but I feel like this scene would’ve been a bit more powerful if they did 2 things.
1- Given Zhan Tiri a line that actually bites Rapunzel. Something that would rile her up enough to have this big magical “eff you” moment. Something to do with either Gothel or Cassandra or the tower or one of her disciples, anything along those lines. Some ideas right out the gate are:
“Ohh, poor thing. Don’t you want to hide back in your safe tower again?”
“Oh please. Your own mother couldn’t defeat me, what makes you think you can?”
“Come child, just give up. Like you gave up on your friends.”
And 2- If they gave Zhan Tiri and Rapunzel just a little bit more interaction together in the earlier seasons. Like at some point in either Queen for a Day or Painter’s Block, establish this idea of Zhan Tiri watching Rapunzel.

What songs from Hazbin Hotel would you link up to each TTS character? Like what parts of the songs would they sing?
OH MY GOD THIS IS GOING TO GET LONG CAUSE YESSSS! I have given this a lot of thought, mostly because I keep a long list of possible animations, so here we go (in no particular order because my brain is chaos):
Stayed Gone is Demanitus and Zhan Tiri in world where Demanitus doesn't disappear into a monkey mostly because of the words but also the image of Demanitus teasing Zhan Tirir for being in little blueberry ghost form thinking she's harmless and she really isn't.
It Starts With Sorry is Rapunzel. Everything about it is Rapunzel! Sir Pentious in this song is Dwayne because his the most loveably pathetic and who I can best picture in this song. The 'Can't be just kill him?' is Cass and Eugene. Which makes extra sense because when Rapunzel goes 'But who hasn't been in his shoes?' she's looking specifically at Eugene who was a thief XD
Whatever it Takes I usually see as Arianna (as Carmilla) and Lady Caine (as Vaggie)... but that admittedly only makes sense in my Tangled Sisters AU.
Poison is a difficult one because of all it represents... I do think Flynn Rider like before Rapunzel but I don't think I'd ever animate or do anything with this one because it'd feel like underplaying the severity of the original song.
Loser, Baby. Could definitely see Lance and Eugene singing this one back when they were in the grip of the Baron, unable to escape criminal life. Lance calling Eugene a loser to cheer him up just feels right XD
Happy Day in Hell is Rapunzel just because she's so sunshine!
Respectless... This is going to sound odd but Zhan Tiri and Gothel. The fact Gothel is the only disciple who doesn't seem to have demon form always makes me think she didn't quite play by Zhan Tiri's rules, and the idea of a younger Gothel just going toe to toe with Zhan Tirir is very funny to me.
Hell's Greatest Dad... I can't remove Varian from my head cause of the voice actor xD but if I try to force Varian in there, my brain changed the word of the song so it becomes a 'science versus magic' issue and some saporians are trying to steal Varian's job!
Welcome To Heaven... It's my least favorite song... The palace employees can have it, they sing the beginning part as Rapunzel comes into the palace for the first time.
More Than Anything.
You Didn't Know, I could see Rapunzel singing this to Arianna and Frederic asking them to lessen the excessive sentences for criminals, Arianna can be Emily and Frederic Sera.
Lute and Adam can be Cap and Nigel although I feel bad but they're the least likely to accept change XD
Cass can be Vaggie but because as someone whose dream is to be a guard and part of the system Rapunzel wants to change that kinda fits?
Out For Love. Perhaps my fave song ever in the entire show. Whenever I hear it I see Arianna teaching Cass to use a spear, does it make sense as a choice? No. But my brain is convinced that's the right answer XD
Ready For This... There's a singular piece of this song that I REALLY REALLY want to do an animatic of with Zhan Tirir, Tromus, Sugracha and Cass... but that's an AU thing XD But ignoring that, it's a Rapunzel song. Rosie and Alastor could be Frederic and Arianna as proud parents, but due to the manipulation bit, it could also be Sugracha and Tromus if they're somehow manipulating her in an AU.
More Than Anything Reprise. This is Lady Caine and Cassandra. Nobody can change this for me. I ship them too hard. I'm sorry. And if my ipad weren't crashing every time I try to animate I would be animating these two sooooo hard!!!
Hell is Forever, another one where I can't get my AU out of my head, in this scenario I see Cass trying to convince the other kingdoms magic isn't irreversibly evil and them being like 'nah, it is', especially cause the burning goes to the witch burnings.
Finale, this is a Rapunzel rebuilding Corona after the finale song but maybe she didn't bring Cass back to life?
More Than Anything, I mean the 'protect and adore you' not realising he's getting in the way and being overprotective is a very Frederic line but I still can't stop hearing Varian XD It's just going to have to be a grown Varian and his kids and he finally UNDERSTAND Quirin XD
That was looong!
But also shorter than I expected!
I feel like I'm missing snippets but yeah, quick overview is there! :D
I love this show and these characters!
