I started this game and instantly fell in love. It’s the most beautiful, coziest, yet simultaneously terrifying game I’ve ever played. A lot of these games make leave me wanting more as far as features or plot but I think the devs nailed this. It’s so imaginative. I have a lot of thoughts about Bramble the mountain king and one thing is that I really wished they had leaned into the more tragic reality of mylingar instead of the "oooh look at this evil female witch who kill babies just to get more powerfull"

It could have been very impactful and emotional so its a shame they turned it into something so cliché

Synopsis: In a haunting land filled with creatures and beings from Nordic folklore, Olle must traverse the lands on a mission to rescue his sister. He will have to make new allies and overcome fearsome odds to complete his journey.

Review (Story and gameplay spoilers ahead): Bramble is a fixed camera puzzle-platforming game, very similar to Playdead's Inside but probably more comparable to Tarsier Studios Little Nightmares series. Displaying many of the latter's strengths whilst also carrying most of its flaws at the same time.

The games presentation is absolutely incredible, some less than stellar facial animation aside, this world is a true joy to explore. Everything feels suitably lived in and immersive, the environments have plenty of variety from being stalked through a swamp hopping across lily pads, to navigating an undead infested village the game manages to keep its locations fresh whilst still maintaining a strong visual language. The designs of the monsters are incredible, whilst not groundbreaking creature design they are all visually threatening and memorable and make for thrilling set pieces set against the quieter moments of exploration.

The story is simply told but effective, some optional storybooks that can be found in the world offer some more expository background to the creatures you will be facing but they are far from essential to understanding the world around you. It's easy to sympathise with Olle and get drawn into his journey as he is really dragged through the wringer with death animations that get a nice balance between shocking whilst not becoming absurdly unpleasant.

The soundtrack is suitably moody and enchanting whilst becoming suitably bombastic during boss encounters, the pinnacle of this is during the final encounter with the Mountain King himself, without spoiling the song used i'm sure you can accurately predict which song has been used.

Unfortunately the flaws really drag the whole experience down and can just kill the pacing dead and severely yank you out of the world. Similar to Little Nightmares, the games fixed camera angles can make certain jumps frustrating and also make trying to find the correct platforms into a bit of a guessing game. Difficulty in games in naturally and a few deaths of game-overs should be expected but I found a sizable chunk of these to be incredibly unfair due to how difficult it can be identifying the correct paths or platforms as the visual style does emulate reality so well. I found this carried over into the boss fights as well as avoiding attacks didn't feel intuitive at all for me, I had to die several times and just start remembering what the animations looked like, although over plays mileage may vary.

Despite these flaws I do recommend this game, it's fairly short and the £20+ price tag on release is steep but it's a very neat and enjoyable experience but I doubt it'll make any Game of the Year lists.

Grab one of 2023’s best atmospheric indie games cheap in Steam sale

One of the most beautiful and eye-catching independent games of 2023, in my opinion, is Bramble The Mountain King. Swedish developer Dimfrost Studio's moody action platformer, which draws inspiration from gloomy Nordic myths, is quite an accomplishment for the group's only other game. Bramble The Mountain King has remained firmly in my memory because to its incredible soundtrack, which spans from the eerie to the ominous. Right now, thanks to a Steam sale, you can pick the up at a steep discount, so act quickly. Following the story of a young boy named Olle who is thrown into the whims of adventure when his sister is taken captive by a troll, you set out into the eponymous land of Bramble in search of her whereabouts. But the strange lands are home to all manner of mysterious and terrifying creatures – some of which might be friendly, but many of whom are decidedly not. Olle makes use of his Spark of Courage to overcome the various trials he encounters, which range from navigating the environment and watching out for traps to facing down numerous ominous creatures inspired by Nordic mythology. The beautiful, misty forests play home to all manner of dangers, big and small, and you’ll have to keep your eyes trained at all times. Bramble The Mountain King Steam Sale - Olle meets Lemus, a giant, friendly-faced creature.The ‘boss fights’ are perhaps some of Bramble’s finest moments – many are not simple showdowns but rather extended sequences where you must elude their attention and figure out how to pass by or overcome the creature. When they do turn to more straight-up fights, Olle can use his Spark a bit like an over-the-shoulder shooter to find weak spots in his opponents’ armor and come out triumphant. I was really taken by Bramble’s sense of place and atmosphere. Its mechanics are solid enough to not get in the way, if nothing too remarkable, but the art direction, sound design, and animation come together to make something truly special. From the haunting warped, reality of the Pesta to the screaming fairytale horror of the Kärrhäxan, each encounter in Bramble feels unique from the others, and they’re all burned into my brain. In questi giorni che precedono le portate principali dell'E3 2021, gli appuntamenti preliminari hanno dato modo di poter osservare diverse produzioni indipendenti decisamente ispirate. Tra un gameplay di Sifu e un incontro approfondito con Kena Bridge of Spirits, alcuni studi che aspirano alla fama hanno avuto l'occasione di presentarsi al grande pubblico. Tra i titoli più peculiari, uno in particolare ci ha colpito particolarmente. Sarà stata per la sua vicinanza ad avventure apprezzate come Little Nightmares (ecco la nostra recensione di Little Nightmares), o per l'alternanza tra spensieratezza giovanile e orrore raggelante, ma Bramble: The Mountain King ha saputo catturare l'attenzione durante il recente IGN Expo, grazie soprattutto a un trailer a tratti impressionante.
