stockholm fashion week: diana orving
(images via damernas)
two thoughts: first, we haven't seen the work of designer diana orving in stockholm since we first encountered her back during the a/w 2010 season when opt was just beginning (okay, save for a glimpse of her a/w 2011 range at berlin fashion week).  and second, homegirl is still a baller.  honestly, i really wish we had more time to discuss her s/s 2013 range, as it was a good confirmation that she's not lost her magic touch.
titled 'flowing origami', the mbfws site explained that the spring collection "is inspired from the ultimate simplicity and purity of the rectangle, the square and the circle. By folding, draping and twisting with precision and exact dimension the simple origin shapes has been transformed into beautiful advanced angles and cuts."
"Fabrics such as silk, jersey, crepe and satin strengthens the elegant flowing finish," they continued. "The colours reflect the change from bright to dusky summer sky including pearl white, sand, purple, metallic, grey and dusky black. The collection is characterized by its relaxed elegance and effortless everyday luxury look."
elsewhere, the swedish site damernas noted that ms. orving is (trans.) "(o)ne of Sweden's foremost to drape," adding that this season we saw "(t)hin materials, expressive patterns - and as always when it comes Diana Orving - black, black and black again."  really, you've got to love that.  or at least i do (yes, really, a lot).
and the swedish blog elin fagerberg: dare to be fabulous (yes, really, and i don't know what to do with it either) declared the range one of their favourites of the whole stockholm fashion week, which i definitely agree with, going on to note that it was full of (trans.) "(w)ell made, interesting garments but undulating shapes and beautiful draping. Very transparent and a lot of classics with a twist."
meanwhile, rodeo explained that of the presentation's some 40 exits (trans.) "perhaps half were completely handmade by Diana Orving herself."  (say it with me: yes, really).  honestly, i'm not sure if that could make the clothes any more beautiful to me, but i know it will make them more expensive!  i suppose they'd still be cheaper than off-the-rack, like, dior or vuitton, though, and you know what i think of that.
actually, though i know we could play free-association for days here, i'll try to keep it to just one: ms. orving's work rather reminded me of an exceptionally posh (and more avant-y) version of swedish label stylein, perhaps with a twist of ivan grundahl or, better yet, bARBARA Ì gONGINI. wilder than the former, and more conservative than the latter two.  yes.
okay, so finally, we heard from the scandinavian site fashion field, declaring that the range staples included "(t)he layered origami-dresses in the end verged on couture, with beautifully pleated and folded detailing. Add the pointy stilettos and you have a Northern equivalent to the classic Paris-chic style."
and they closed with the reflection that "(e)xcept for the origami dress-parade and the beautiful garments in general, the presentation was quite anonymous. The classical/jazzy music created an interesting background to the show, but it’s always a good idea to have something that sets the show apart."  hmm.  just a good example, i guess, of how we are all so very, very different.  i loved it for every day of the week and five times on sundays.
