The Significance of Art Nouveau for Private Bath Culture
The fascination with bath culture in the Art Nouveau period and the resulting artistic design of bathrooms reflect the spirit of an era that placed high value on beauty and art in daily life. By merging functionality with aesthetic enjoyment in private bathrooms, Art Nouveau demonstrated its innovative power and its desire to blur the boundaries between different areas of life. Thus, bathrooms of this time were not just places of cleansing but also spaces where residents could experience relaxation, inspiration, and a deep connection to nature and artistic creation.
In the Art Nouveau era, the bathroom was reinvented as a place that nurtures both body and spirit and is seen as an integral part of an artistically designed home. These spaces stand as testimonies to a time when the art of living and the joy of daily routine were seen in a new light, reminding us how design and aesthetics can enrich the human experience.

Designing Women: Fashion Creators and Their Interiors at Museum at FIT
Now through May 14, 2023, the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology has a show on women fashion designers who also did interior decoration from the late 19th Century onward. As both kinds of designing were part of the decorative arts, this made perfect sense to them. The same principles about the art of composition were used to design both. In fact, one of my early fashion books actually explains how to make each room of a house as harmonious as a woman’s clothing.
You see here a yellow, fur-trimmed tea gown from around 1918 which is attributed to Lucile, then a remarkably fluffy evening cape by Jeanne Paquin, evening cape, 1987, France, and lastly a painting by Henri Gervex which he called “Cinq Heures chez Paquin” or Five Hours at Paquin from 1906 which gives you the idea that women spent a lot of time picking out their purchases at the designer’s salon.

Picked this up at the @fotografiska.newyork last spring during their #moholynagy exhibition. @larsmullerpublishers has reproduced the 1925 #designs but with English translations of the #bauhausbucher series of books. They were initiated by Moholy-Nagy & #waltergropius to promote the #newdesign philosophies coming out of the #bauhaus . While the #book is called #painting #photography #film , it’s very apparent in the essays & the visual content that László was much more interested in the latter two. Fascinating as an #arthistorical record and as documentation of some experimental projects that were never fully realized – there’s a great visual “script” at the very end to a film that never was produced. #artbook #typography #graphicdesign #bookdesign #avantgarde #arthistory #designhistory (at Fotografiska New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn-MFajuyrf/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Never Miss Art Design History Vol. 5:  Blue Note Records (c/o Alfred Wolff & Reid Miles)
Blue Note records is loved, respected and recognized as one of the most important records label in the history of music. Founded in 1939 by Alfred Lion, who had fled oppressive the Nazi regime in Germany,  started this institution that would be a leader in innovation, in both music and design.
Tumblr media
The record label consisted of a small groups of improvisational jazz, played by young men of Afro-american origins. They played acoustic instruments with extradordinary ability. In the middle of racially discriminated America/ society, great music was performed- and thanks to Wolff, “had to be recorded.” Blue Note records are among the most collectible records in the jazz genre, desirable like a historical artifact.
Flip over any of the Blue Note records to check the credits, and you’ll find two names, Francis Wolff (the founder himself) and graphic designer Reid Miles. Wolff, shot almost every Blue Note session from “the minute he arrived.” Wolff would fill a contact sheet with great shots, and then pass it to Miles to select the perfect one, and the perfect crop—for the album covers. Miles incredible talent for eye for framing, color, and composition combined to give us designs that instantly get our attention.

Blue Note is as distinctive and essential as its look, now these designs are jazz iconography. We at Never Miss Fine Arts recommend you to take a look at the history.

Oh happy day! (Apart from the heat). The delivery person brought this wonderful monster-sized book on Alexander Girard today. All manner of lovely American folk art-inspired niceness within, including one of the, er, coolest (?) photos ever (it’s the last one in the scrollalong), like something from a late-career Beastie Boys video. You’ll see what I mean. . #alexandergirard #beastieboys #airline #branding #folkart #americanfolkart #vernacular #vernacularart #design #architecture #interiordesign #designhistory #book #bookstagram #shelfie #artbooks #fabric #fabricdesign #patterndesign #art #typography #lettering #retro #veryretro #sixties #sixtiesdesign #60sdesign https://www.instagram.com/p/CgM3nHkoK6F/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Cradles of Design: Exploring Symbolism in the Cantilever Chair and Aeron Chair
The cantilever chair, originating as a sketch by Mart Stam in 1926 and further developed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, represents a pinnacle of Bauhaus furniture design. In architectural discourse, the cantilever chair symbolizes innovation and defiance of traditional structural norms. By suspending the seat without traditional rear legs, it challenges conventional notions of support and stability.
The Aeron Chair, designed by Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick in 1994, offers a stark contrast to the cantilever chair in both form and function. Embracing ergonomic principles, the Aeron Chair prioritizes comfort and support through its innovative mesh design and adjustable features. Unlike the cantilever chair's bold defiance, the Aeron Chair embodies adaptability and responsiveness to the needs of the sitter.
In the context of religious symbolism, the Aeron Chair can be likened to the nurturing embrace of the Madonna, offering ergonomic support and comfort akin to maternal care. Its design reflects a modern interpretation of the Madonna and child motif, emphasizing care and well-being in the built environment.
The juxtaposition of the cantilever chair and the Aeron Chair underscores the complexity of architectural and religious symbolism within design. While the cantilever chair represents daring innovation and defiance, the Aeron Chair embodies adaptability and care, mirroring the dualities inherent in architectural creation and the eternal quest for the acme of design excellence.

Brief 6 - Boardgames, but it is actually Walter Gropius
Unfortunately, I couldn't participate in the brief due to a case of Strep throat. By the time I recovered, everyone had already completed their games and activities. Instead, I focused on my Design history project during that time. I delved into extensive research, exploring influential design movements, renowned designers, and significant design philosophies throughout history.
During my recovery, I focused my research on the influential Bauhaus movement in Design history. I delved into the origins, principles, and lasting impact of this groundbreaking artistic and design movement. Immersed in my study, I explored the innovative teachings and experimental approach of the Bauhaus school, which integrated art, craft, and technology in a harmonious manner. I analyzed the works of pioneers like Walter Gropius, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, and Marcel Breuer, studying their revolutionary designs and the underlying philosophies that guided their creative process. Additionally, I examined the broader social and cultural context in which the Bauhaus movement emerged, recognizing its profound influence on architecture, furniture design, typography, and the visual arts. Through this in-depth exploration, I gained valuable insights into the principles of form, function, and simplicity that continue to shape contemporary design practices, showcasing the enduring relevance of the Bauhaus legacy.
This study was for the Design History portfolio, whereas we wrote a text based on some of the books/articles from this semester and made a physical book with 3 works in them.

Designhistorie - Eksamen

Never Miss Art Design History Vol. 6:  Graduation Album (c/o Takashi Murakami & Kanye West)
Many popular album covers become iconic pieces of pop art, and there are a few that are as impressive as the music presented.
Tumblr media
Enter Mr. Kanye West; already a Grammy-winning producer, artist, cultural and style icon, fresh off 2005's highly acclaimed Late Registration. Kanye links up with Japanese artist Takashi Murakami. He visits Murakami’s studio and calls his style “fresh”... few months later he taps for his next album cover “Graduation”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The College dropout bear, (Kanye’s mascot) went from a shy individual, worried about the future to hyper-colored & super confident. The colors are vibrant and whimsical. The design portrays the bear being launched up into the sky, after graduating from “Universe City”. A perfect analogy to Kanye actually skyrocketing into SUPER STARDOM. “Graduation” was special time, where fashion, art, and hip hop culture intersected- perfectly.
The artist has a sort of Warhol-esque quality to him as he uses many vibrant colors in his designs, but also is a huge promoter of pop art, while combining traditional Japanese painting with Western influences, the realm of fine art with otaku lifestyle.  A very influential music piece to the staff at Never Miss, we recommend diving into artist Takashi Murakami.
