Was scrolling through the Chainsaw Man tag when I saw this page again:

And I realized that by not connecting Seigi, Nobana, and Denji's panel together, Fujimoto is literally putting distance between them. He is literally showing us that Denji isn't connected to other boys his age.

Denji no longer has access to his heart

The golden rule in Chainsaw Man is to focus on the title, since it's the key to reading the story.

Rain, Brothel, Removal seem to be three absurdly unrelated elements, and Fujimoto likes to put it that way, because the challenge for the reader is to find a way of reading that links them together.

This chapter is funny as well as disturbing, deeply sad, and in itself this collection of sensations just makes you uncomfortable, since the tone is always reversed, and the protagonist himself refuses to allow his situation to be a comic spring.

Fujimoto confirms an interpretation that is fundamental to understanding Denji: his character thinks only in terms of short-term objectives, incapable of projecting himself, just as he responds only to the satisfaction of needs without being able to verbalize and think about his unhappiness in a more abstract way.

Denji, for example, isn't thinking about whether sex is actually a solution to his problems, no, it's more concrete than that: he's thinking about whether he's masturbated recently.

Another piece of evidence is the rain. I've always thought that when it rains in Fujimoto's works, it's proof that no lies are being told.

Whether in Look Back with a silent victory, the school moment with Reze and Denji.

But that's not what we're interested in here, because there's no doubt that Denji is sincere, or at least the rain only shows us that he's sincerely desperate.

There's a subtlety....

Denji complains that he only thinks with his dick, but there's another, more philosophical and certainly less funny idea behind this: Denji only thinks through his body.

The rain, the amputation, the brothel - they're all proof that Denji only thinks with his senses.

Denji thought the brothel was the solution to his distress, it's when it started raining that he collapsed, as if the change in weather had evoked his own emotional change. Yoru's solution is amputation, another physical sensation and solution.

Amputation is a solution all the more symbolic because it's antithetical to what Denji is: a demon man capable of regeneration.

To amputate is in itself not to regenerate, and not to regenerate is in itself to be more human.

What distinguishes us from animals (although science relativizes this) is the way we think about our own emotions, something Denji is incapable of doing, or at least has great difficulty in doing.

This doesn't mean he can't verbalize it at all, but when he evokes, he evokes a sensation, a dish (a shitty hamburger, a steak, a ton of sex).

Even when he wants to be loved, Denji formulates it in the form of wanting his heart, almost organically.

No one wants Denji's heart because it's gone

And it makes sense, because Pochita has reassembled his entire body, except for Denji's heart, which has literally been left in that garbage can.

That's why, when Pochita lets Denji access his feelings, the place is symbolized by a garbage can.

When Denji asks Pochita to wake up to find Nayuta, Pochita asks him where his legs are, because Denji's only function is to be a body.

And now everything makes sense again

When Denji spoke his dream to Pochita, being Chainsaw Man, I think there was a certain feeling in every reader: what exactly does it change?

What if it changes nothing? It's normal for Denji not to be able to project himself in the long term, as he should symbolically listen to his heart.

Denji's inability to have a dream, a goal for the future, is symbolized by him and Pochita as children.

It doesn't mean that Pochita is an antagonist (although that could be cool), but that Denji and Pochita are prisoners of their own situations.

Denji doesn't have access to his heart, but Pochita is contractually bound to what Denji wants.

This is also why, when Denji reproaches himself, it's his child self who's addressing him, because the only way to reproach himself, to feel guilty, is symbolized by his old self, the Denji that Pochita may have known. Just as Denji doesn't have access to his heart, Pochita has difficulty gaining access to the person Denji has become, all of which only leads to stagnation.

Denji as a child is also the symbol of a scumbag, the remnant of a lost heart, always dressed in poor, dirty clothes, a past that Denji seeks to escape, but a past that is the only time Pochita has been able to get to know Denji.

I know it's a pretty crazy line, but it's precisely because Denji is Chainsaw Man - a being both fused and disconnected - that he thinks with his dick lol

Denji's hypersexuality is a common coping mechanism in SA victims, to try to give the assault a logical meaning of why did it happen, or to get to know the foreign at getting close to the act itself. Genitalia in this case would be representative not only of his lust but also the element reminder of his trauma: wanting to have tons of sex lead his life to end up miserably, so, the victim blames himself for feeling hurt. The yakuza reminds him of his failure in performing manhood, as Katana Man calls him weak, crybaby, "Chainsaw woman" as kicking his genitals joking to stick them in his behind, and Makima to have twisted his idea of love and taken advantage of his needs, making Denji believe he isn't deserving of happiness. At the end it all falls into self-harm, the result of this macabre recipe to make a human to hate every facet of his being: his identity: as Denji, as CSM, as a man / his existence: to have born in poverty, orphan, to have killed his father and adoptive family, suggested to perform downgrading gender roles in prostitution (accused woman's job to give men pleasure) / his hopes and dreams for the future, everything is poisoned on his mind. This chapter is about relapse and realization.

Denji is under layers and layers of misconceptions, he is unable to see things through. He thinks his lust is the reason of his tragedy, when he hasn't done anything to anyone to get blamed on as a perpretator/predator. He isn't the one to blame for not being strong enough to stood by himself sooner against his abusers, and yet he still capable to recognize the act is wrong and undeserving (even if he was told through all of his life men should always accept a sex offer and sex = love/joy), ex with Fumiko he inmediatly recognized she assaulted him. Sex isn't Denji's priority and never was actually, and that's something admirable on itself, because is important to never forget how his happiest where with Aki and Power, putting their friendship above everything else, even above Makima's offers.

I don't think cutting his genitals or even transitioning will fix anything, it would be an impulsive act by trying to escape from the natural progression of the stages of grief and give the instant solution Denji wants so bad right now, where the real cause of his grief is the guilt of the survivor, his self-hatred for having been treated as an object of repulsion and failure through all his life he ended up believing it; to have suffered so much abuse which lead him to see his priorities unclear, amoung other things, seems like it started to click on his mind. This is why Yoru, of all characters, is the one who offers to give Denji "the solution", the character who exists to inflict pain and death on CSM. Also, because he's a hybrid, it will regenerate eventually. It's not gonna happen, probably.

thoughts on 165 / 166! i wrote a short para on 165 a bit before 166 dropped, but here they are for context. anyways umm 166:

the framing of this scene as comedic is also so interesting. this sense of disconnect/seperation; the prev chapter where we're witness to denji's own jarr w. how the others handle the normalcy of death/warzone. here the jarr is redirected to how we percieve denji. the audience, like nobana, finds what he says comedic, or just palpably out of place, like asa. it's this shift in orientation where we're directed to view denji as floundering/reduced to punchline... and perhaps even more significantly: Abnormal.

views on sex | there's a lot of intense self hatred wrapped up in here as compared to (128): its emphasis on connection (what makima told him about intimacy). by contrast, the brothel is depersonalised. p2's emphasis on connection (parasocial as presented to asa by yoshida, nayuta's chapters) makes this hollowing out of denji very central to how us/he regards sex. this hypersexual self at points overlaps with the ultra masculine figure of the CSM, a figure he has grown to hate. (there's also much to be said about makima's actions in p1 and their aftermath as seen in their culmination here, but that's a whole other discussion TBH. )

protagonism | masculinity: i've talked q. a bit how asa's shafting / relegation to csm's "woman" also removes the visibility of her desires from the pages of the story. the previous arc centers/evokes gender in many ways: from how eyepatch talks about his wife to katana as a whole... chainsaw man was taken apart, in a sense, on that dissection table. denji's transition to being "an ordinary human," outside the lens of the protagonist (where asa resides, the other side of the screen in that theatre) is through a crude removal of percieved "manhood."

3a. on this note: i'm heavily reminded of the theatre scene. through yoshida talking to denji about <protagonism>: the same unremarkableness to violence (others will clean it up) placing denji on the other side of the screen. & this mention of his wiener/pecker too (the two times it's been brought up in the story).

the former: wielded in a manner to bring him to the very stage where the movie's being screened

& the latter: part of this Removal [of the csm], pointing him towards a shadowed alley. they're also distinctly different in how sexuality is percieved in both these scenes (including the nature of the comedy, in both situations, being denji in distress); and i find it interesting to situate this where the fumiko scene is post his first convo w. asa about sex.
