the only person I'm friends with who is a true obsessive tswiftie is a Dutch spam insta mutual of mine who believes he is the reincarnation of Jacob Louis Veldhuyzen van Zanten, the pilot who in 1977 caused (""caused"" in quotes because it IS more nuanced than that but yeah) the Tenerife airport disaster by taking off in foggy conditions without clearance and colliding his fully loaded 747 with another full 747, creating the deadliest aviation disaster of all time, killing himself and 582 others. He loves taylor swift and makes collages about his memories of his past life as a 50yo KLM pilot, the disaster and how he died, and his guilt over his part in the deaths of almost 600 people with Taylor swift and harry styles lyrics on them. I'm not making fun of him I think he's a cool guy genuinely. Just I kind of have to mention him whenever someone mentions tswift fans being wild because I truly think he blows most of them out of the water

Brazil blames U.S. pilots in crash that killed 154. They’re still flying.
Tumblr media
In an empty cafeteria outside Brazil’s Justice Ministry, the widow checked the time. She twisted her engagement ring. She sipped her coffee. She checked the time again.
“I’m anxious,” Rosane Gutjahr said.
She also felt thefamiliar rage that had guided almost all her actions since Sept. 29, 2006. That was when an executive jet flown by two American pilots, Jan Paladino and Joseph Lepore, clipped a Brazilian Boeing 737 over a remote swath of theAmazon rainforest.
The larger plane — Gol Flight 1907, from Manaus to Rio de Janeiro — disintegrated midair. Every one of its 154 passengers and crew was killed. The body of Gutjahr’s husband, Rolf, was found amid the wreckage on the forest floor.
The Embraer Legacy 600, meanwhile, managed to land at a nearby military base. None of the seven passengers and crew on board — all Americans — suffered injuries.
Today, Gutjahr hoped, she would find out whether justice would finally come to the men she blames for her husband’s death.
The question of responsibility in what was then the deadliest aviation disaster in Brazil’s history divided the Western Hemisphere’s two most populous countries. In the American telling, the collision was caused by Brazilianair traffic controllers. The pilots did nothing wrong — were heroes, even, for safely landing their jet under extraordinarily challenging conditions. After being detained by Brazilian authorities for weeks, Paladino and Lepore returned to a triumphant welcome in the United States.
“It will indeed be a blessed holiday season,” rejoiced Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.).
But in Brazil, the American pilots were found to be at fault. A criminalcourt determined thatPaladino and Lepore had flown while the plane’s transponder was inactive, effectively blinding traffic controllers to their jet’s precise altitude. They were found guilty in 2011 of attacking the security of an airplane and sentenced to 40 months of probation.
“The pilots’ failure caused the tragedy,” future president Dilma Rousseff said as she campaigned for her first term.

The Mount Erebus disaster occurred on 28 November 1979 when Air New Zealand Flight 901 (TE-901)[nb 1] flew into Mount Erebus on Ross Island, Antarctica, killing all 237 passengers and 20 crew on board.[1][2] Air New Zealand had been operating scheduled Antarctic sightseeing flights since 1977. This flight was supposed to leave Auckland Airport in the morning and spend a few hours flying over the Antarctic continent, before returning to Auckland in the evening via Christchurch.
The initial investigation concluded the accident was caused primarily by pilot error, but public outcry led to the establishment of a Royal Commission of Inquiry into the crash. The commission, presided over by Justice Peter Mahon QC, concluded that the accident was primarily caused by a correction made to the coordinates of the flight path the night before the disaster, coupled with a failure to inform the flight crew of the change, with the result that the aircraft, instead of being directed by computer down McMurdo Sound (as the crew had been led to believe), was instead rerouted to a path toward Mount Erebus. Justice Mahon's report accused Air New Zealand of presenting "an orchestrated litany of lies", and this led to changes in senior management at the airline. The Privy Council later ruled that the finding of a conspiracy was a breach of natural justice and not supported by the evidence.
The accident is the deadliest accident in the history of Air New Zealand, the deadliest aviation accident in Antarctica and one of New Zealand's deadliest peacetime disasters.

today, march 27, is the anniversary of the tenerife airport disaster of 1977. maybe take a moment to think about the lives lost in the deadliest disaster in aviation history. of the combined 644 passengers and crew of the two planes, only 61 survived. it was a whole lot of errors and circumstances piling up on each other, and it ended tragically. let's hope nothing like that happens again.

Air Race Championship will no longer take place in Reno after almost 60 years
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 03/09/2023 - 19:12 in Air Shows, Sports
The famous air racing competition in Reno, called the National Championship Air Races, will leave the city after the last event in September, after almost 60 years in northern Nevada.
On the official website of the air race, the organizers of the Reno Air Racing Association (RARA) said that the final race will be held from September 13 to 17 at Reno-Stead airport.
Tumblr media
RARA explained: "Although we knew that this day could come, we hoped it wouldn't come so soon. Citing the significant growth of the region, among other concerns, the Reno Tahoe Airport Authority made the decision to close the event."
A letter sent to supporters and fans said that the Reno Tahoe Airport Authority made the decision to close the event citing the significant growth of the region. The airport authority said there are concerns about the economic conditions, the rapid development of the area, public safety and the impact on Reno-Stead airport and its surroundings.
Tumblr media
RARA goes on to say: “However, we are committed to finding a new location so that the event can continue. In fact, we are currently exploring several other possible locations to host the event in the future, but it all starts with making this year's event as big and most successful as possible. Deep down, the future of the National Championship Air Races starts now. And we need your help."
During the event in 2022, a California pilot died when his jet crashed during the championship round. In September 2011, more than 60 people were injured and 11 people died when a plane used in a race dived into the stands. The tragedy marked the third deadliest air disaster in the history of the United States.
Air racing enthusiasts are inviting the community and racing fans from around the world to join them to participate in the Reno Air Races in style for the last time. “Consider this a celebration of six decades of emotions, history, splendor, camaraderie and family,” RARA said.

The organization will continue to discuss the future of racing, but is eternally grateful for the decades spent at Reno-Stead Airport and its partnership with the Reno Tahoe Airport Authority.
People come from everywhere to enjoy the event. For many, the city of Reno is synonymous with air racing. Finding a new location will undoubtedly be a challenge. Races need good weather for the selected season, as well as enough open space around the airport for the route and ground support (hotels, regional airports supported by airlines, restaurants) for teams and spectators.
The final event is scheduled to take place for the last time in Reno with more than 150 planes and pilots, as well as several exhibitions and practical experiences.

I am not the same anon but i would love to hear abt the tenerife airport disaster thing!
It is the worst and deadliest accident in the history of aviation.
On 27 March 1977, two Boeing 747 jumbo jets (KLM Flight 4805 and Pan Am Flight 1736) collided on the runway at Los Rodeos Airport (now Tenerife Airport) on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, resulting in 583 fatalities, with only 61 people from the Pan Am flight making it out alive. Here is an excellent documentary on it.

Air France Plane Crash: Pilot's Final Words as Flight 447 Plunged into Atlantic, Leaving 228 Dead
Tumblr media
In a tragic event that shook the aviation world, Air France Flight 447, en route from Rio de Janeiro to Paris, met a catastrophic end on June 1, 2009, plunging into the Atlantic Ocean. All 228 souls aboard perished in the disaster, marking one of the deadliest accidents in aviation history.
Tumblr media
The grim details of the flight's final moments emerged years later with the discovery of the cockpit voice recorder, unveiling the harrowing exchanges between the pilots as they grappled with a series of technical failures and adverse weather conditions. Pierre-Cedric Bonin, the first officer and co-pilot, uttered his chilling last words as the aircraft plummeted towards the ocean: " don't have control of the aeroplane anymore now." Followed by: "I don't have control of the aeroplane at all!" The crash investigation attributed the tragedy to a combination of technical malfunctions and human error. Ice crystals caused the autopilot to disconnect unexpectedly, leading to confusion among the flight crew. Incorrect responses to the stall situation exacerbated the crisis, ultimately resulting in the loss of control.
Tumblr media
As alarms blared in the cockpit, the crew struggled to regain authority over the aircraft. Despite efforts to rectify the situation, including futile attempts to climb, the plane continued its rapid descent towards the water. The passengers remained unaware of the imminent danger, kept in the dark about the severity of the situation unfolding in the cockpit. In a desperate plea, Bonin exclaimed, "We're going to crash! This can't be true. But what's happening?" before an ominous voice lamented, "F***, we're dead."
Tumblr media
In the aftermath of the tragedy, significant reforms were implemented within the aviation industry, including enhanced regulations for airspeed sensors and advancements in pilot training methodologies. Despite the passage of time, the memory of Air France Flight 447 remains a somber reminder of the importance of vigilance, preparedness, and continuous improvement in aviation safety. One Year After China's Worst Plane Crash in Decades: What We Know and Don't Know
Tumblr media
One year ago today, a China Eastern Airlines Boeing 737-800 crashed into a forested hillside in Guangxi province, killing all 132 people on board. It was China's deadliest aviation disaster since 1994, when a China Northwest Airlines Tupolev Tu-154 crashed near Xian, killing 160 people.
The cause of the crash remains unknown, despite an ongoing investigation by Chinese and international experts. The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) issued a brief statement on Monday, saying that due to the complexity and rarity of this accident, the investigation is still being carried out in an in-depth manner.
The statement did not provide any new information or data from the plane's black boxes, which were recovered days after the crash and sent to the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) for analysis. The CAAC said that experts had inspected more than 100 pieces of wreckage and focused on how key components were performing before the crash. They also looked into air traffic control, passengers and cargo.
The lack of transparency and details has raised questions and frustrations among some aviation experts and relatives of the victims. Greg Waldron, Asia managing editor of industry publication FlightGlobal, said that the brevity of the CAAC's one-year statement was unusual, noting that one-year reports published by other Asian countries were often dozens to hundreds of pages long and included detailed analysis.
"The objective is not to attribute blame, but rather to improve the safety standards of the industry in general," he said. "This data from this equipment should have yielded detailed insights into conditions with the aircraft and in the cockpit at the time of the crash."
Waldron added that while every aircraft disaster was complex, there should have been enough clues from various sources to narrow down possible scenarios or rule out some factors.
According to previous reports by Reuters and other media outlets, based on anonymous sources familiar with preliminary findings from flight data recorder (FDR) readings:
- The plane was flying normally at cruising altitude when it suddenly entered a steep dive for about 10 seconds. - The pilots managed to pull up briefly but then lost control again and crashed into a mountainous region at high speed. - There was no indication of mechanical failure or external interference before or during the dive. - There was no distress call or communication from the cockpit crew before losing contact with air traffic control. - The weather was clear and there was no turbulence or icing reported along their route.
Some possible explanations for such an unexplained dive could include:
- A deliberate act by one or both pilots or someone else on board who gained access to flight controls. - A loss of consciousness or incapacitation of both pilots due to hypoxia (lack of oxygen), carbon monoxide poisoning or other medical reasons. - A malfunction or misinterpretation of flight instruments or automation systems that led to confusion or incorrect actions by pilots. - A sudden structural failure or damage caused by undetected fatigue cracks, corrosion or foreign object debris.
However, none of these scenarios can be confirmed or ruled out without more evidence from other sources such as cockpit voice recorder (CVR), radar data, satellite communications data, maintenance records and witness statements.
The NTSB has not commented publicly on its role in assisting with analyzing black box data from MU5735 flight. Under international rules governing air accident investigations led by another country's authority - such as CAAC - NTSB can only release information if authorized by CAAC.
A final report into what caused MU5735 crash could take two years or more to compile according to Chinese officials last year.
Meanwhile relatives are still waiting for answers as they mourn their loved ones who perished in this tragedy. Some have filed lawsuits against China Eastern Airlines and Boeing seeking compensation and accountability.
China Eastern Airlines grounded all its Boeing 737-800s after MU5735 crash but later returned them back into service after conducting safety checks. The airline said it had full confidence in its fleet safety standards.
Boeing said it was cooperating with authorities investigating MU5735 crash but declined further comment citing respect for ongoing process.
The Boeing 737-800 is one of most widely used models worldwide with more than 5000 planes delivered since its introduction in 1998. It has generally good safety record but has been involved several fatal accidents over years including Lion Air Flight JT610 which crashed into Java Sea shortly after takeoff

At least 67 people were confirmed dead and hope was fading for any survivors after a plane with 72 on board crashed in Nepal on Sunday, the Himalayan country’s deadliest aviation disaster in three decades.
“Thirty-one [bodies] have been taken to hospitals,” said police official AK Chhetri, adding that 36 other bodies were still in the 300-metre gorge the aircraft plunged into at the site in Pokhara in central Nepal.
“The aircraft crashed into a gorge so it is difficult to bring the bodies. Search and rescue is ongoing. No survivors have been found yet,” said army spokesman Krishna Prasad Bhandari.
Yeti Airlines, which operated the flight, confirmed there were 72 people onboard – 68 passengers and four crew. According to an airport official, there were 15 foreign nationals among the passengers including one Australian, one French, one Argentinian, four Russians, five Indians, two South Koreans and one person from Ireland.
The twin-propeller aircraft, which was 15 years old, had been travelling from the capital Kathmandu to the city of Pokhara in central Nepal, a popular gateway to the Himalayan mountains for religious pilgrims and international trekkers.
The plane took off at 10:30am on Sunday morning and crashed on the banks of the Seti Gandaki river just 10 to 20 seconds before it was due to land at the newly opened Pokhara international airport.
Footage shared on social media, which appeared to be shot just after the crash, showed the plane enveloped in raging flames on the ground as black smoke billowed into the sky from debris strewn across the crash site.
Another clip shared online showed a plane flying at a low altitude over a residential area banking sharply to the left, followed by a loud explosion.
The wreckage was still burning after the crash and rescue workers who reached the site worked to put out the blaze and recover the bodies. “All agencies are now focused on first dousing the fire and rescuing the passengers,” said local official Gurudutta Dhakal.
Nepal’s prime minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal called an emergency meeting following the crash. The Nepal government has also formed a five-member commission of inquiry to probe the cause of the incident.
Nepal’s air industry has boomed in recent years, carrying goods and people between hard-to-reach areas, as well as foreign trekkers and climbers.
But it has also been plagued by poor safety due to insufficient training and maintenance. In May 2022, all 22 people on board a plane operated by Nepali carrier Tara Air died when it crashed and in March 2018, 51 people died when a US-Bangla Airlines plane crashed near Kathmandu.
The European Union has banned all Nepal airlines from its airspace over safety concerns.
The Himalayan country also has some of the world’s most remote and tricky runways, flanked by snow-capped peaks with approaches that pose a challenge even for accomplished pilots.
Aircraft operators say Nepal lacks infrastructure for accurate weather forecasts, especially in remote areas with challenging mountainous terrain where deadly crashes have taken place in the past. The weather can also change quickly in the mountains, creating treacherous flying conditions.
