DCA Subnautica AU

Version #2 of the designs, including the bioluminescence! + fun tidbits on each of the goobers and a visual on Y/N!

Eclipse is up first!

Theirs was the first design I drew out in any detail (as shown in the crude MS Paint drawing), so it's the one that needed the most work. Even after making the more detailed version with the lights, I still ended up changing things as I got a better grasp on what direction I wanted to head in. Fun lore tidbit! Eclipse is a freak of nature and should not look like that! They're properly split down the middle between day and night. Also I messed it up in the drawing because I was tired when I made it, but they're also covered in scars and bite marks.

Sun !!

I did Sun next, and here I had a better idea for what I was going for. There were still a few problems with this design though, which got changed. This is also where I started drawing the pattern on the tail, which I felt looked weird in this picture. Fun tidbit! Sun has an inability to express his feelings in the appropriate fish mermaid way, leading to much confusion.

Moon !!

Moon was done last. Once again, I learned from this drawing and changed Moon's design to match, however Moon is the one that remains the most unchanged! I knew what I was going for by the time I got to him each time, so I guess that helped. Something I did alter, however, were some of the lights. I found that they either blended together too much or weren't as visible as I would have liked. Fun tidbit! This is pose actually based on a scene in one of the chapters. It was actually one of the earliest written scenes.

Y/N, my beloved <3

I did 2 versions of Y/N, one with longer hair and one with shorter. It was important for me, when writing the story, that I kept the person I'm imagining as vague as possible, with the only physical descriptions being "physically fit" and having a few scars (for plot reasons), so this is only for me and whatever drawings I do. As a result of trying to keep it vague, I ended up going with the shorter hair (though in the final reference I made it a bit longer than shown here). Fun tidbit! The green is because whenever I'm sketching, I have 4 colours I sketch in to differentiate parts of the picture (usually background vs foreground or different people), and green was the one I used here (red, blue and purple were taken, I'm sure you can understand why). It ended up sticking, since I didn't want to go with the orange that's on Ryley's suit in order to avoid possible confusion.

That's it for now! At some point, I'll post the full references for each of them, but until then, the next thing I post will probably be chapter 1!

Mer Sun.

Wobbegong + Angel shark + Brown-banded bamboo shark + Horn shark. Barely 4 ft long.

Sun lives in the same kelp forest as Moon. Those two often hang out together, as they have never found any others of their kind. Sun is an ambush predator. He buries himself in the sand and snags anything that strays to close (well, anything that isn't too big). He likes to crawl onto the beaches of near by islands and play in the warm, dry sand. And when he's done, he buries himself in it and takes a nap. He and Moon also love to go exploring on the islands. Moon is definitely the faster out of the duo. Both on land and in the water. But, he usually waits for Sun to catch up so he isn't left behind.

Funny little tidbit, Sun refuses to believe clams aren't moving rocks, no matter how many times Moon tells him. Sun has never seen the inside of a clam before. Moon doesn't know how to break them open, so he can't really prove his point. Even if Moon tries to show Sun a clam's shell, Sun just says that clams are fossil rocks (they have found fossils inside rocks on the beaches of some of the islands that they explore) and that the shell is the fossil inside. The two get into this argument a lot.

Now for some info/lore ab mermaids in the au!! ‼️😁😁

Mermaids have several different capabilities and forms of hypnotisis, but let’s talk about what moon can do :}

He can do that standard type of hypnosis where he jsut gotta make eye contact w/ u wether from afar or up close and boom 💥💥 ur in a trance! He can use this on animals as well, and has many uses for it! He prefers to use it to hunt too.

He can also has siren song! Singing will put you in a trance, but it doesn’t rlly work underwater…

WHCIH IS WHYYYY HE CAN DANCE AS WELL! A silent song of ripples as he twists his body in the water will allure and bring anything to him, he can use this to hunt, for fun, or for a few other things..

Mermaids are known to exist, but there are only a few very low quality pictures of them.. the only people who saw mermaids rarely lived to tell the tale 👀

Mermaids also have magic that can manipulate water, weather, temperatures, or even the day and night cycle! Rlly depends on the mermaid. Moon can alter the day and night cycle, day to night in seconds! When strange occurrences happen, it’s just common knowledge that it’s a mermaid messin round.

There are several different types of mermaids, but only 1 of each type can alter something significant that the normal cycle of life depends on. For example, sun and moon, the celestial mers, affect the day and night cycle ofcccc. If one is out of the ocean for too long things can get messed up :C

When weather, day, anything significant like that is out of wack the people know smthn goin on with one of those mermaids, and despite mermaids eating/unaliving people… they are very much needed. Of course there are good and bad mermaids who do and don’t eat people, but you know.. anyways! There are companies that seek to capture the significant mermaids and others who seek to protect those significant mers! Those significant mers r typically good :)) The companies rarely ever need to protect those significant mers, unless they are captured as children, which doesn’t happen much but normal mer children r captured more regularly, still rare but it happens. The people of the company protect mers, but they also must protect themselves. It’s most common for mers to use the eyesight hypnosis, it’s never been heard of them using song or dance yet.. tho the song part is suspected! Anyways, the people in the company wear special goggles where you can’t see the person’s eyes and they are mostly shielded from the hypnosis- though they are strictly forbidden from making eye contact just in case. Also- the company also protects general sea wildlife! They go out and feed sharks, no one ever goes alone. Not even during their leisurely time where they are going out to swim sea creatures just for fun! But what happens when someone is whisked away by a mermaid right in front of their coworkers or friends..?

Anyways! Moon obv has a lot of physical strength, he’s quite fast too. Since he can’t talk underwater, mermaids can do a cool thing where they speak to you telepathically! He can’t read your mind, but Moon can sense emotions :))

Moons general personality in the fic is gonna be kinda typical, very mischievous and playful, teasing and scaring people. He also seems to enjoy playing with his food 👀… He doesn’t like unaliving prey without using some sort of hypnosis, it’s just more exhilarating or fun that way.

More talk on y/n and sun in the future! 😁😁
