Day 10: Love is devotion
Rated General, Cord/Rysn, Dawnshard spoilers
Dear Akilu,
I know it's silly to write to myself as though this were a letter to you, but that's how deeply I love you. When I think of myself, I think of you, dearest Akilu, my protector.
It’s been nine times nine days since our common cause came to an end, and we decided to part ways. In the rush of relief and victory, we didn’t know how we felt about each other. You were wise to ask for this time apart.
In those days of anxiety and trouble, keeping our secret safe was our highest priority. You, Nikli, Chiri Chiri, and I were together every day through it all, and our shared secret became a shared bond. But every bond is different, as you said. In the days since our parting, I have thought of Nikli less and less, though I wish his horde every success. Not so with you, Akilu–not to say I don’t wish you success, of course! I would say I wish you the world, but we’ve already learned how much responsibility that is. No, when my thoughts turn to you, I wish you happiness, and peace, and success at every endeavour.
More to the point, I have been thinking of you–and missing you–more and more every day. Today, on this eighty-first day, I can say it with confidence. It wasn’t just our proximity that made me feel this way. I’m not alone here on the Wandersail, and many of the crew have become friends. My attendant is thoughtful and precient with his care, and I am freer than ever to pursue any adventure I’d want. I have money, and time, and good heath. I have everything–except you.
Akilu, I miss the steady pace of your footsteps just behind me. I miss the little huffs and sighs you made as you judged the people I bargained with. I miss your smile when you eat good flavourful food. I miss learning your language, and I miss teaching you mine. I miss your stories of the Peaks. I miss the way you looked at me, the way you focused like I was the only person on board.
Without this time apart, I don’t think I would have understood just how much those things mean to me. Without it, I would not have known just how much my devotion to our shared secret had overshadowed my growing devotion to you.
I'm sure you'd be delighted to learn that for those who follow the Passions, the eighty-first day is an auspicious one. Nine days times nine gathers our deepest desires and brings it back to us amplified and clear, and we may even see an omen. I haven’t always been the strongest believer but I can’t deny that I have wished for a reason to go back to you, and today there was an opportunity to go to the Horneater Peaks. I can’t help but feel that it’s a sign that–
Dear, sweet Akilu, I’m going to save this and show it to you when I see you! I can’t tell you how much your spanreed surprised me. Here I am writing in my journal about how much I want to see you, and you find me first. The second I finish writing this, I’m going to start organizing the caravan. I have to speak to the captain! She could drop me off near Vedenar.
I can’t wait to see you, Akilu. I’m brimming with joy. I am hoping with every passion in my heart that you feel the same way.

Dawnshard by Brandon Sanderson
Second Stormlight Archive’s novella. Unexpectedly creepy for a Stormlight book. This novella follows Rysn and Lopen. Chiri-Chiri is ❤️. Cord is there and awesome. The Lopen does his thing. Set between Oathbringer and Rhythm of War. Worth reading for substantial world building and lore. So much lore.
“The others called him silly, but he thought the different colors tasted different.”
I have clearly fallen deep into the Sanderson universe to the point where this is turning into more of a Cosmere reading tracker than a general reading log. Might take a Sanderson break after this. Or might just dive straight into Mistborn. Haven’t decided yet.

Corysn is my favourite wlw cosmere ship (not that it's competing with many others at the moment), and I wanna talk about why.
Dawnshard is maybe the first example I can think of where a relationship like Cord and Rysn's happens: two unrelated women of similar ages who strike up a genuine friendship. Now of course this happened over the course of only days instead of something more gradual, but still, I think this novella did something that I have yet to see in another cosmere book: made these women feel like they had a genuine connection, a spark between them. First when Cord is relieved to find someone who can speak a language she's comfortable with, then as the two continue to converse—Rysn finds Cord nice company among every other person on the ship. They enjoy being with each other, in short.
Then, Dawnshard kicks it up a notch. The ship is attacked and they have to make a getaway. What does Cord do? She saves Rysn. The two escape into a cavern—and now it really is just the two of them.
And this becomes a central theme I think going forward with the two of them, with their ship—that it's just the two of them. Cord is the only other person there who is privy to Rysn's secret. They are the only two who can confide in each other. It creates an even deeper bond between them.
To me, I see the future of Corysn as Rysn, the holder of this strange power, and Cord, her protector, the only one she can rely on. I see two women who have each other's backs, and who can rely only on each other. I see a knight and her lady, I see a bond that keeps them tethered for the rest of their lives.
I think that's beautiful, and it's why I love this ship so much. (Plus the two of them are just sweet and cute on their own)

Kunai Reads Cosmere Update!
Since my last post where I read Rhythm of War, I've since read three Cosmere books. I finally branched out from Stormlight archive.
This post will contain spoilers for Dawnshard, Mistborn: The Final Empire, and The Alloy of Law
DAWNSHARD
This one was a lot more focused on merchant stuff than combat, which I thought was going to bore me. Heck, I got the book in November and I didn't finish it until now despite it being a quarter the length of a normal Stormlight book, so I thought it did.
As it turned out, I just needed a break from Roshar. Once I came back, I was having the time of my life! Rysn is such a good character, and I'm so glad she got her own book. Also, Lopen's Third Ideal was honestly kind of touching. I wasn't expecting his Ideal to be "I'll stop (or at least rein in) the pranking." It made me really happy that he got that character growth, especially considering the fact that I was thinking he would be a relatively static character.
MISTBORN: THE FINAL EMPIRE
My first foray into Scadrial! To be honest, I don't typically read dystopia much, and there were some things about The Final Empire that I thought was just Sandman laying it on a bit thick.
Seriously. A law that says you can sleep with any Skaa woman as long as you kill her? Makes no sense from a logistics perspective.
But the characters were *so* much fun. I loved Ham's philosophical questions, I loved Breeze in general, Kelsier is a *Dork* and I love him. Even though I knew beforehand that Kelsier died, I was still heartbroken when he did.
Vin as a Protagonist seemed a bit... eh? I did like her more as she went on, but after being introduced to the Cosmere with Kaladin, I was hoping for an equally strong protag. Hopefully I'll get there with Well of Ascension. I did really like Elend, though.
MISTBORN: THE ALLOY OF LAW
I'll be honest, I picked this up because I didn't own Well of Ascension or Hero of Ages yet.
WAX IS SO GOOD. I LOVE THIS MAN.
His interactions with Wayne, his thought process, the fact that Steris had a 20 Page Marriage Contract and he was just like "Well. Someone's Thorough."
Steris better show up more in book 2. I've seen people say that she starts out terrible, but she's so good. I love my autistic noblewoman.
Marasi is a really good protagonist, too, for the exact same reasons as Wax, to be honest. I hope she shows up more, her Allomancy is really interesting!
Since those are done, I've started reading other Cosmere books. I am currently reading The Well Of Ascension, Warbreaker, and Edgedancer. Edgedancer gets priority, but I've also made it to chapter 17 in Warbreaker. So far, I love Siri and Viv.
Once I Finish those, I'll work on Hero of Ages exclusively. Then I'll read Shadows of Self and Bands of Mourning. After that, it'll be Secret History, Sixth of the Dusk, and Shadows for Silence.

Ok, so I’m gonna talk about Lopen
Specifically when he swore his third Ideal (I just finished Dawnshard). There are two things I want to point out: the first is his response to being told that he sometimes hurts people. As a Knight Radiant, it’s his job to protect people. And it’s his habit to make jokes. We already know that he doesn’t always think about his actions. But his first response to being told he sometimes hurts people was to say “would they like it if I just stopped talking? Would they be happier if I wasn’t myself?” And he realized that no, that’s not the case. He can still be himself, he just needs to be more careful. Which I think is something some of us can relate to. Our first instinct is to react drastically. “Would they like it better if I was a completely different person?” But no, we just need to be more careful.
The second thing is about the phrasing (and I’m paraphrasing here) of “Huio trusted me with this pain”. Because the truth can hurt. Especially when it’s being told that you accidentally hurt people. But that doesn’t mean that it also can’t be helpful. I’m sure that now the Lopen will have a better relationship with those around him because he’s actively gonna try to not hurt them, because Huio trusted Lopen not to react poorly to being told this hurtful truth

alright look. on the one hand ✋ i appreciate and respect the meta justification for rysn being barred from radiance and this is a cool way of achieving it. but on the other 🤚 being told "you would be too fucked up and powerful and dangerous if you ever bonded a spren" has the opposite effect on me. that's an invitation to see it happen. girl that's foreshadowing. that's chekhovs fucking miracle cure.

Isn’t Cord Just Wonderful? by cosmere_play
Rated Teen, 900 words, Cord/Rysn
Mutual pining, first kiss.
The voyage had been extremely successful from a few perspectives, but what Rysn was cherishing most was the personal success.
She’d pushed herself farther than she thought she could go. She’d delved deeper into her own insecurities and had come out on top. It made her feel bolder, like she had just gotten a taste of life again, and she wanted more.
She glanced over at Cord, standing fearlessly in her new Shardplate, looking out over the ocean as if she were personally in charge of allowing each wave to pass. She was a handsome woman, her stance solid, her eyes shining. The hair of her braid caught the sunlight, reflecting a shade of red Rysn felt she’d never seen before...
Cord turned and met her eyes, flashing a grin. Rysn smiled back and laughed, feeling the lightness of the day, filled with sunlight and good winds and oh storms, isn’t Cord just wonderful?

wait. im sorry wait. so sigzil said he was around 38 when he stopped aging but he looks like he's in his early 20s and the dawnshard (holy shit but I'll get there later) nows adapts his body back to the way he looked when he first took up the dawnshard so he did that before creating a nahel bond with auxiliary. who i don't think was his honorspren in row. he took it from hoid and gave it back. i understand the torment as a twisted version of what hoid's got but this persists after even giving it up? holding a dawnshard changes your body forever? implications for rysn aside even if he gave up the dawnshard eventually he held it in conjunction (???) with a nahel bond for years and years......wtf goes on in stormlight 5???????????
