Milky Way Stairway Enchanted Rock, Fredericksburg, Texas After months of research, preparation, and several failed attempts, I finally got my first Milky Way shot. My wife Josette and I were supposed to camp last weekend in the hopes of seeing the Milky Way but the weather did not cooperate and thunderclouds covered the sky. We decided to take one more chance this week while the moon phase was still favorable and clear skies were in the forecast. As soon as we got off work last Wednesday, we drove back to Enchanted Rock and waited. What made it a more wonderful experience is another photographer saw what I was doing and approached us. When I told him what I was hoping to do, he took the time to give me tips on capturing the shot as well as how to be safe in hikes like this. It can get scary waiting in the dark and wilderness and it was reassuring to know that another person was there in the park with us who knew what he was doing. And then it was there, the core of the Milky Way appeared on the horizon. Having lived in big cities with light pollution my whole life, I still can't believe I saw it with my own eyes. It was really a surreal, humbling experience. A reminder of how small we really are. I am glad I finally got the first of what I hope is many, many more Milky Way and astrophotographs. I would like to thank Josette for her support and willingness to stay up late on a work day to go on this trip and share this experience with me. I honestly wouldn't have the nerve to wander in the darkness without her. Being able to enjoy it with her made it all the more memorable.
