Me half way through lightbringer:
Maybe I have judged lysander too harshly. Maybe he isn’t garbage. I will stop my hate and give him a chance.

I really take Alexandar's death more personally than anything else, because there is no closure whatsoever. That also implies that Rhonna gets killing rights over everyone else, Darrow 'I want to spare everyone's feelings' O'Lykos can wait his bloodydamn turn.

What a beautiful way to end lyria’s story. Weird that Pierce never told us what happened after this but isn’t it nice to end on a happy note ☺️

My Lightbringer predictions
SPOILER WARNING — many, many spoilers for Dark Age and the rest of the series too, of course. Read forward at your own discretion.
Tumblr media
@pierce-brown feel free to let me know if I’m right.
Kalindora (the Love Knight) was poisoned by Atalantia
- I’m completely certain of this. When has Darrow EVER used poison on his blade? To put it simply, he doesn’t need it. Atalantia, on the other hand, wears an actual venomous snake around her neck at all times (and I do mean all). Plus, Darrow’s slingBlade was shattered during Lysander’s little jousting session immediately after Kalindora was allegedly mortally wounded. I don’t see Lysander slowly dying in agony from poisoned metal shards embedded in his arm.
- Atalantia has a lot to gain from Kalindora’s death — namely, Lysander au Lune’s name and allegiance, his renewed vigor for war, and the (frankly, disturbing) relationship she establishes with him. Plus, Kalindora was a competitor in terms of political sway in the society reminant.
Volga narration
- Her journey with the Ascomanni needs to be told by someone. Who better than by her?
- Also, following the… umm… “worthy” scene, we’re short a narrator. Eph watching his own heart be eaten was really dark, Pierce. It only makes sense for Volga to pick up his legacy.
Diomedes au Raa plays a significant role
- Diomedes represents Iron Golds of the Rim and is currently with the Society reminant, but we know he healed and freed Cassius (who appears to be working with the Republic). He walks a stiletto line between allegiances, and after the deaths of Romulus and Seraphina, he’s basically the heir to the Rim.
- He has a very strong brand of honor that fits well with the honor shown by Cassius. Diomedes saved Cassius before and led him back to the Republic, and I doubt their relationship has concluded with that.
- Diomedes is also very aware of how traitorous, and, well, messed up, the Core Golds of the Society are, and we already know that he’s hesitant to ally with them.
The Blues will rally around Darrow
- It was mentioned in Golden Son that there are blue training academies on Phobos, which is a moon of Mars. Darrow needs a fleet, desperately, and we all know he’s a master at shifting the paradigm. Also, the Republic still has Colloway, a hero to the blues, and the ace pilot has not yet performed his pièce de résistance.
- I very much doubt Colloway will survive the next book, unfortunately. I hope I’m wrong.
Pax vs Adrius 2.0
- Forshadowed by the Abomination hoping to have a “passage” by killing Pax. I feel confident, however, that Pax will own Adrius, although not kill him. I mean, half of the kid’s DNA is Reaper’s and half is Mustang’s. Come on now.
- Bonus points if Pax kills Lilath too. please
Lykos is destroyed
- By this point, everyone and their mother knows about Darrow’s big, wonderful, bleeding heart, and Society Golds are great at cutting straight for vital organs. Especially if Mars is the final planet protected by the Republic — I just can’t see Lykos township surviving Lightbringer if multiple armies siege the planet.
Lyria infiltrates the Jackal’s dominions on Luna or Tokyo
- As the new Figment, her abilities and their source are incredibly unclear. I think she would do well in a mission like this, and along the way, maybe she can somehow free Sevro and we can find out what exactly the Parasite is. Hopefully, Victra is part of this too.
Quicksilver’s allegiances have changed
- I don’t trust this man one bit. Why was he so comfortable when Virginia blew off the Silver voting bloc just before the Day of Red Doves? Where did the Rim get those new ships that travel so much faster than those of the Core? Honestly, the trillionaire may be funding the Society too. War profiteering is the name of the game for Quicksilver, and I wouldn’t be surprised if his original backing of the Sons of Ares and the Rising was more of a successful investment than a moral cause.
Virginia and Lysander speak
- Somehow, somewhere.
- Lysander most definitely blames Virginia for the deaths of his grandmother, Octavia, as well as Aja, and this must be addressed. Lysander once trusted her, when he was a child, and understands just how brilliant she is, so hearing her perspective could change everything for him.
- I think Virginia’s influence, combined with the revelation about Kalindora’s death at the hands of Atalantia, will be a step in turning Lysander to the side of the Rising. Lysander is incredibly intelligent and empathetic, so I don’t think he is entirely lost yet, despite his horrifying plunge into space racism and rather unfortunate spearing of Darrow. It will be a slow and perilous change, spread over the next two books, but I believe the last Lune will figure out where the light is eventually.
I look forward to finding out what I got right when Lightbringer drops this July!
Hic sunt leones.

“He looks down at his feet, searching for words. When he finds them, he looks up at me with the raw emotion of his father, but without the anger or the pain. “Mother, your inheritance was guilt. Father’s was surrender. Because of you, because of Father, mine is struggle. That is better than guilt. It is better than surrender. I do not blame you. I thank you. You never pretended the world wasn’t broken, even when a broken world favored you.”
Light Bringer, pg.144
I GOT TO THINKIN TODAY ABOUT WHAT PAX SAID ABOUT HIS PARENTS’ INHERITANCE AND I HAD A REVELATION. okay sorry VERY LONG WINDED ESSAY BELOW. (Light Bringer spoilers too)
If Darrow’s inheritance has always been surrender and Virginia’s has always been guilt, then Light Bringer is a study in how they’ve swapped those burdens, and both grew immensely because of it. Virginia is forced to face the reality of surrender to keep Mars from falling. She must learn to sacrifice lives on an unimaginable scale. She literally has to surrender Phobos in order to hold Mars and save lives from a bloody battle over pride. She routinely seeks out the injured and dying to confront those she sacrifices. It’s heart breaking and hard to read at times, but not once did she not feel like the character we grew to love. She stays true to herself while mentioning multiple times that she now understands Darrow’s plight more than ever from the last decade.
Then on the flip side, Darrow is forced to reckon with his insurmountable guilt when he is put on trial before the daughters in the rim to answer for betraying them in order to secure a victory for the core rising/republic. He talks about how that guilt put a wedge between him and his family. That guilt made him feel unworthy of love, and, therefore, unable to properly express his love to those he would give everything for. This mirrors Virginia’s past struggle with one particularly potent example being her inability to believe that Darrow could love her after he reveals his true identity as a red in the tunnel under Lykos at the end of Golden Son. She says
“They are my family!” she shouts, face collapsing into grief. “My father hanged your wife. He hanged her. How can you even look at me?”
I think it’s this guilt (and probably some feelings of utter betrayal, panic, and overwhelm) that led her to leave Darrow in that tunnel and indirectly led him into the Jackal’s trap. Which I’m sure she also feels immense guilt for. But I think a large part of her journey off page and into morning star is her coming to terms with that guilt. In confronting it she learns to be vulnerable with Darrow again and comes to accept that he loves her despite the insane complexity of their history. This culminating with her leaning into her understanding of her part in the society and realizing that it puts her in a place to make a true change. All of this accomplished with an education in immense humility, flexibility, and compromise. Which is the lesson Darrow grapples with and I think truly leans into throughout this book. In a way, he is forced to reckon with how his guilt drove him away from Virginia and Pax and even veered him away from Eo’s dream.
I think on a character based level, this will exponentially strengthen their relationship when (please please Pierce) they finally reunite, and will make them a more formidable pair than even before. They now understand each others struggles in such intimate ways that idk if anyone can stop these two.
Then, on a larger plot based level it speaks to the larger themes of resilience, understanding and the fight for humanity. Virginia finds strength in surrender and Darrow finds redemption in humility and compromise.
Then, add in some struggle, grit and pixie dust (and a cool head tattoo I guess. WE SEE YOU OVER THERE PAX AKA ADEPT AUGUSTUS. HELL YEAH KEEP IT UP BABY WOO) and the rising might just have a true shot. Not only at victory, but at redemption and continued effort in the name of what is just and good.

Parallels Between Lysander and Lyria Part 1
In the wake of my Red God theory post, I figured I should probably get a move on this one. Thanks to @solarrepublic for giving me the proper motivation to work on it. There WILL be spoilers for all if not most of the books.
After thinking about both Lyria and Lysander, it occurred to me that their stories are pretty similar in a lot of ways. If it weren’t for Lyria’s ability to self-reflect, she could’ve very well ended up as an antagonist. Not on the same side as Lysander, but certainly a hindrance to the Rising.
Let’s at first, take a look at their beginnings. Both of them grew up with certain expectations of how life was going to go; they had been raised to believe the had a specific place in the world. Their lives got upended when Darrow entered the playing field.
By the end of Morning Star, Lysander lost everyone he considered his family, and was forced into isolation. Granted, it was for his own safety, but it didn’t do him any favours. And this is something I touched on before, but I believe that Lysander witnessing his parental figures’ death as well as seeing Cassius fall from grace, really messed with his head. THEN, being isolated with poor Cassius who was suffering from his own issues I think really turned Lysander against Darrow and the Rising. Not mention learning what happened in Ganymede, I can only imagine Lysander thinking ‘look at everything the Rising took, how can it possibly be better?’
On that same vein, Lyria spent her whole life as a slave until, like Lysander, her way of life changed because of Darrow. And, while not as isolated as Lysander, she was still removed from her home and put somewhere different, unfamiliar, and without the resources she was used to. Also like Lysander, Lyria lost the majority of her family, AND,she was then sent away from the refugee camp to work/live with one of the people involved in the Rising.
So, to summarize at this point, both Lyria and Lysander grew up with certain expectations about how the world was. Then, due to Darrow’s actions, they were removed from the lives they had been accustomed to and forced into a space where they got little to no assistance. Both of them were essentially left to wallow in their own negative feelings against Darrow and the Rising.
I’m going to leave it here so I can formulate more brain things about it but there will be a part 2. Because

List of interesting questions to ask Pierce Brown if you ever get the chance:
You said at Comic Con 2022 that 'Darrow is the spine and the point of the story' - could you please elaborate on it?
House Augustus is still extremely imteresting and mysterious, are there any tidbits about them that you had to cut out but consider them true to them?
You stated that Virginia is the hardest to write and always left her entrance last because of it. How was the process from that to best pov character?
What can you tell us about House Arcos - we know Lorn would have killed Darrow, even Darrow hints at it, but how come House Arcos has come to grow into one of the Reaper's main allies?
Dark Age was gruesome, but hope still flickers through the darkness. What inspired you to write it just like that?
Lyria has the best plot of Dark Age, hands down. Her growth and connections are beautiful. How did it come to you to unite her with Victra and Volga on this journey?
Do we have a name for Mama Augustus or is it still a secret?
You gave Darrow a much beloved leather jacket. Would you consider giving Darrow a drake as well or would Sophocles be jealous?
I personally interpret Diomedes as being scared after his father died like he did. He gives off the same vibes as Darrow did un the beginning of Red Rising - if I obey, I won't die. What were your intentions with him?
Kalindora said that she could never go against Octavia, but Virginia had no problems with it. Is the difference between them a rigid spine or something more?
Atalantia seems to be a foil to Virginia in a few ways, would you agree with that?
Virginia dragged the Howlers hard for leaving Darrow on Mercury. Genius scene, how was it writing it?
Ephraim was doomed from his very iconic sarcophagus entrange, but he still learnt to live for more, even if for a short while, how was it like to write a character like that?
Are there any other mental tricks that great Gold Houses developped to avoid being killed or worse?
Pax says Sevro took zoladone during the Rat War, but we don't know much else about them - could you please tell us something about this relationship?
There seems to be a different meaning for Blood Red depending on the pov - Darrow and Lysander to be specific. Was that intentional?
Is Cassius now the Morning Knight of the Order of the Solar Republic?
What's with Lysander and his 'best GOLD swordsman' list?
Ajax and Diomedes seem to be mirror images of each other, not just physically. Could you please tell us something about them?
Are all of Darrow's father figures doomed to die gruesome deaths?
On page, Darrow holds the record for most Olympic Knights killed, with or without Kalindora. Was that intentional?
How did Cassius feel when he had to deal with House Raa, which is not that dissimilar with House Bellona from some povs?
Nero still haunts the narrative, but in a good way, he's creating drama for Lysander. How fun do you find him to write even if it's for a paragraph or two?
To be continued.

Note
can you explain the four tragedies you made a pool about? i’m only a bit through dark age and i’m confused❤️ i wanna know regardless of spoilers
So the first one was Ares’ head in the box from the ending of Golden Son. ♈️📦
The next one, 🌲👶🔨 is the death of Ulysses, Victra and Sevro’s baby. He was nailed to a tree by the Red Hand literally hours after being born.
🐴🔴🕊 is referring to the Day of Red Doves. When Dancer and his other senators died horrifically from poisoned togas as well as the Virginia being captured and deposed by a huge mob of Vox Populi, also killing Daxo.
🐠🥧 references the chapter near the very end of the book where Thraxa made him a fish pie and Darrow is forced to abandon his pie when he realizes that Lysander au Lune is alive, on Mercury and right under his nose. RIP Darrow’s Pie
