Pointing towards God by Shikher's Imagery Via Flickr: It seemed like the first rays of the sun joined hands with the Dhwaja Stambha (flag pole) in pointing towards the direction where Shiva resides while Nandikeshwara, his most ardent devotee, sat in an eternal dhyana mudra and gazed at him insatiably. Brihadisvara Temple is a World Heritage Site in Gangaikonda Cholapuram village in Tamil Nadu. It is one of the "Great Living Chola Temples," besides the Brihadeeswarar Temple of Thanjavur and the Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram, Kumbakonam.

Jyotirlingas, pellegrinaggio dei devoti di Shiva

Il pellegrinaggio dei 12 Jyotirlingas di Shiva, contesto Gli Jyotirlingas sono i luoghi dove si ritiene che Shiva si sia manifestato sotto forma di una colonna diluce. Per questo sono diventati mete di pellegrinaggio e di culto popolari in tutta l'India. Prima di parlare di Jyotirlingas, una piccola premessa di carattere generale. Le principali divinità dell’Induismo sono Brahma, Shiva e Vishnu. Essi sono la rappresentazione delle forze presenti nell’unico Brahman. Per Brahman (da non confondere con Brahma, la divinità) si intende lo spirito cosmico o coscienza universale. Brahman è l’essenza dell’universo o realtà divina originale. Le tre divinità ne rappresentano un aspetto ed ognuna ha una propria funzione principale: Brahma presiede alla creazione, Vishnu presiede alla conservazione e Shiva si occupa della distruzione, per poter far rinascere un mondo nuovo. All'interno dell'Induismo esistono molte correnti che scelgono di adorare in via prevalente una o l'altra divinità e di queste lo Shivaismo è una delle maggiori, per questo il pellegrinaggio degli Jyotirlingas è così popolare. Per dirimere la disputa, Shiva decise di trasformarsi in un enorme pilastro di luce e trafisse i tre mondi: il cielo, la terra e gli inferi. Vishnu e Brahma si separarono e si diressero verso le estremità del pilastro, per cercarne la fine. Brahma prese la forma di un cigno e volò verso l’alto, mentre Vishnu prese la forma del cinghiale Varaha e corse a cercare la base. Nessuno riuscì ad arrivare alla fine della luce, perché il pilastro non aveva ne’ inizio ne’ fine, ma Brahma, sapendo di mentire, disse di essere arrivato a vedere la fine della luce. Per sostenere questa bugia si fece aiutare dal fiume Ketaki che testimoniò di averlo visto raggiungere la fine della colonna. La bugia di Brahma e la sua maledizione La bugia di Brahma mandò Shiva su tutte le furie. Si arrabbiò a tal punto che lanciò una maledizione su entrambi: il Dio non avrebbe potuto più essere adorato dagli uomini, mentre il fiore di Ketaki (pandanus odorifer) non avrebbe più dovuto essere utilizzato nei rituali religiosi. Questa colonna di luce, detta Jyotirlinga, in seguito si raffreddò nella collina Sacra di Annamalai su cui si trova il Tempio di Arunachaleshwara, in Tamil Nadu. Origine dei 64 Jyotirlingas originali In quell’occasione, la colonna di luce infinita di Shiva comparve sulla terra in 64 punti sotto forma di Lingodbhava. Di quei 64 posti, solo 12 sono conosciuti come i principali Jyotirlingas dell'India. In ogni Jyotirlinga Shiva si manifesta in una delle sue forme e benedice i fedeli. Lingodbhava ovvero “l'emersione del Linga" è una rappresentazione allegorica del dio Shiva ed è spesso presente nei templi induisti dell'India meridionale.
