So one thing this World Championship has established is that I need more Tania Sachdev and Daniel "Danya" Naridistky in my life. MVPs from the chess.com commentary team if you ask me. Honestly, both have been fantastic at focusing and translating Anish and Fabiano for us amateurs, and providing some crazy smart analysis themselves.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's a bit more about them...
Tumblr media
Tania Sachdev is a Woman Grandmaster (WGM) with a peak rating of 2440. She's two-time Indian women's chess champion (2006 and 2007), one-time Asian women's chess champion in 2007 and three-time and current Commonwealth Women's Chess Champion in 2016, 2018 and 2019.
Tumblr media
Daniel Naroditsky is a Grandmaster (peak rating 2647) who, last I checked, was top rapid and blitz player on both Lichess and Chess.com. He's crazy quick at spotting tactics and does really informative speedruns on twitch and YouTube (check out his training videos with Andrea Botez too). I've only just discovered his YouTube and I need to watch more of it asap.

I missed game 3 which did apparently also end in a draw but gonna catch up on all my game review today. Game 4 still live right now and Lei Tingjie once again is applying pressure in the middle game and ju wenjun is recovering in the endgame to retain the draw this is a real battle. Also Daniel Naroditsky on commentary is a really cool addition if we can have him and Kosteniuk on at the same time that would be a huge W

Stafford Trap
Another Chess trap! This one is pretty famous due to International Master Eric Rosen. It comes out of his favorite gambit, the Stafford.
Tumblr media
Stafford is just good for White (there's a very educational Daniel Naroditsky video explaining why). However, Bg5 is an easy to make blunder and it gives Black an amazing resource.
Tumblr media
Free queen?
Tumblr media
No. Somehow Black makes checkmate with a knight and both bishops. Respect the minor pieces.

After Hans Niemann defeated the World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen in the third round of the Sinquefield Cup 2022, Carlsen decided to withdraw from the tournament without detailed explanations. Rumors that Magnus Carlsen suspected Niemann was cheating started spreading over social media and the controversy over the Niemann – Carlsen case is not stopping. While Niemann spoke on the case on several occasions, the World Chess Champion gave his first interview on the case two days ago saying that cheaters should not be taken lightly either online or over the board.
Top grandmasters and chess journalists asked FIDE to react on the case. Hikaru Nakamura and Daniel Naroditsky concluded on the stream that it’s very tricky that online chess platforms for playing don’t have any agreements with FIDE, and that there should be clear communication between the main online servers and FIDE on the matter of cheating. English chess master Leonard Barden, The Guardian’s chess columnist, asked FIDE to step in, while GM Nigel Davies stated that the FIDE Ethics Commission should act if Carlsen does not give a public statement on the case. FIDE Director General Emil Sutovsky said that FIDE is concerned about recent developments of Carlsen – Niemann case and confirmed that FIDE will publish the official statement on the case.
FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich today published the official statement which can be seen below:
Last week, World Champion Magnus Carlsen resigned in a game played in an online competition against GM Hans Niemann before making his move two. The week before, he left an over-the-board tournament after losing the game to the same Mr. Niemann.  These were not FIDE events; however, as the world’s chess governing body, it is our duty to protect the integrity of the game and its image, and in view that the incident keeps escalating, we find it necessary to take a step forward.  First of all, we strongly believe that the World Champion has a moral responsibility attached to his status, since he is viewed as a global ambassador of the game. His actions impact the reputation of his colleagues, sportive results, and eventually can be damaging to our game. We strongly believe that there were better ways to handle this situation. At the same time, we share his deep concerns about the damage that cheating brings to chess. FIDE has led the fight against cheating for many years, and we reiterate our zero-tolerance policy toward cheating in any form. Whether it is online or “over the board”, cheating remains cheating. We are strongly committed to this fight, and we have invested in forming a group of specialists to devise sophisticated preventive measures that already apply at top FIDE events. As we have already done before, FIDE calls for reinforcing the cooperation between major online platforms, private events and top players – most of whom have already expressed their will to join efforts with FIDE. FIDE is prepared to task its Fair Play commission with a thorough investigation of the incident, when the adequate initial proof is provided, and all parties involved disclose the information at their disposal. We are fully aware that, in some cases, uncertainty can harm players’ performance. It also can be damaging to a player’s reputation – that’s why we insist on the anti-cheating protocols to be followed. It is our hope that this whole situation could have a long-term positive effect, if tackled properly. We propose to launch a dedicated Panel, that would include representatives of the leading chess platforms, Grandmasters, anti-cheating experts and FIDE officers, in order to fight this risk and prevent it becomes a real plague. Arkady Dvorkovich FIDE President

PogChamps returns: xQc, Tyler1, QTCinderella, more to star in next big streamer chess spectacle
Tumblr media
Chess.com, which had earlier in July teased PogChamps 5, has officially confirmed the event's schedule and intended players. From July 26 to August 18, the competition will feature the struggles of content makers who have turned into amateur chess competitors, with a live finals scheduled to cap the spectacle. PogChamps 5 is set to be a two-week tournament billed as “the most exciting amateur event in chess” and will feature popular streamers in a battle of wits on the sixty-four squares “where insane blunders and on-screen agony are part of the fun.” This time, Ludwig will be joining the event as a co-host and co-producer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qU_ox9V3BNQ The first two PogChamps events, which took place in 2020, were won by Voyboy and Hafu. Sardoche and Fundy then won the 2021 editions. After a gap year, the competition now returns with a World Cup-style format. There will be four groups of four, each with a round-robin bracket, and the top two players will then qualify for the knockout stage. The following content creators will participate in the fifth edition of the event, with a $100,000 prize pool on the line: - Daily Dose of Internet - Distortion2 - Franks-is-heres - Fuslie - Ghastly - I did a thing - Jarvis - Jinnytty - Papaplatte - QTCinderella - Squeex - Sykkuno - Tyler1 - Wirtual - xQc XQc, of course, is one of the returning participants in the competition, and while he’s clearly been grinding over the past week, his current rapid Elo of 928 is a far cry from his peak at 1,282 at the end of Jan. 2021, near PogChamps 3’s run. The former Overwatch competitor is widely credited as playing a big part in the first, pre-Queen’s Gambit chess boom, joining forces with Hikaru Nakamura on his quest to learn the royal game. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4_L47DNFNY Many of Chess.com’s commentary team from their high-level in-house events will partake in the commentary, with GMs Robert Hess, Daniel Naroditsky, and chessbrah’s Aman Hambleton confirmed behind the mic alongside the Botez sisters, IMs Danny Rensch and Levy Rozman, plus FM James Canty III, a previous winner of chess.com’s IM not a GM competition that pitted international masters against one another. For the first time in the competition’s history, PogChamps 5 will conclude with a live final in Los Angeles on Aug. 18, produced by Offbrand and Mogul Moves, with more details to be announced at a later time. While it’s tough to predict which content creator is the favorite to win the event, Chess.com’s curated competitors and their level of play essentially ensure a highlight-slash-blooper reel is right around the corner for this one. How to make chess interesting
The problem with the world chess championship is it's boring; it's like watching the computer chess championship if the computers weren't forced to play interesting openings. Depending on how much faith you put into this type of analysis, it looks like the most recent WCC game was one of the highest level chess games of all time - both players made no inaccurate moves and played almost identically to top level engines.
This is an unavoidable consequence of both the way chess works and the specific format - you often have to open yourself up to losing to win games, and that makes a lot of sense in round-robin tournaments where the goal is to outpace the field, but in a head-to-head match, taking a risk (especially against a player who's been preparing to take advantage of any risk you might take for months) is heavily disincentivized.
Both of the last two WCC matches were decided in rapid tiebreaks, and while I'm hoping we don't see another match of all draws in classical, I wouldn't be surprised if we go to the tiebreaks yet again. The professional consensus (informed by tournament results and elo rating) is that the reigning world champion Magnus Carlsen remains the favorite, as he has been in his previous four matches, but he still wasn't able to prove it in classical in the last two.
All of this makes one wonder - if the classical section is just a long, boring prelude to the rapid tiebreaks, why have it at all? And why has classical chess been the dominant time control for so long, anyway? It's boring as shit to watch, and computers have been better at it than humans for decades now. Speed chess is driving the game's massive spike in popularity, so why not just convert?
Carlsen himself has espoused this view (probably because he's just as dominant in rapid and blitz as he is in classical) and the tournaments his company runs reflect that preference. In a few decades, I suspect we will see a massive shift in the money and prestige assigned to faster time controls.
If there's a reason that classical has survived this long, it's probably because it seems like good classical players are more likely to be good speed chess players. When the top classical players move to faster time controls, they often obliterate competitors that specialize in those shorter time controls. Playing classical just makes you better at chess, period, than speed chess.
Daniel Naroditsky (one of the best blitz and bullet players in the world) has talked about this directly, saying that he "needs to study classical to get better at blitz". He considers himself to have maxed out all speed-chess-specific skills, so his primary way to improve is now getting better at classical.
Naroditsky is rated 2622 in classical chess, and in my own personal ranking, he's the fourth-best bullet player in the world. All three players who are considered definitively better than him (Nakamura, Carlsen, Firouzja) are players who've been rated over 2800 classical during their careers, and Carlsen and Firouzja both currently are.
I don't necessarily think this is an argument against switching to shorter time controls, but it's certainly something to consider. Maybe someday we'll think of classical as a torturous form of training for the more important, faster time controls.
