15/06/2022-Winchester and home
I brought my bridge camera in my work bag one more time today when working in the office mainly to see if I could get some more young Peregrine pictures to complement the couple I took early last week the day I had the faux pas with not having my spare battery and the battery running out so I might have taken more pictures. I got to Winchester Cathedral at lunch time and could neither see nor otherwise sense any Peregrines and hadn’t had the chance to check the webcam. I had an inkling that with them now able to fly which I learnt from hearing it online over the weekend they might be at St. Thomas Church which I often pass on the way to the cathedral but hadn’t today which they use as a go between its not far from the cathedral and I’ve often seen the adults there. With no sight of the Peregrines still when passing back past the cathedral after eating in Abbey Gardens I went back via St. Thomas Church and was amazed and happy when my inkling was correct and I saw both of these adorable young birds. I saw them perched on the tower of this church turned residential property and thrillingly flying above. One as I learnt via the webcam later headed back to the cathedral.
I took the third-seventh pictures in this photoset of one. It was a true honour to be able to see this stunning looking bird so well kissed by the bright and glorious sunlight, its feathers lit up well with its gorgeous colours and striking patterns I especially enjoyed its underwings. I’d never actually seen a young Peregrine at St. Thomas Church as I only discovered it in November 2019 well after the young were around that year, in 2020 I didn’t really see the Peregrines during the breeding season due to working from home and my one odd day in the office on the essential cover rota system had me seeing the young ones at the cathedral nest site in 2021 and then I wasn’t back in the office again until October last year I don’t think. I must admit I did think this happened quite fast the two young birds now flying across the city and perching elsewhere, its amazing how quickly things change when observing and following nesting birds and young in any way, though I might be wrong about that. I wonder if perhaps this week’s very hot weather played a part in this as St. Thomas Church did feel like it had quite a lot of shade and I imagine the gully of the cathedral where these chicks have been raised and fed might not see the freshest place in hot weather but again I am just speculating.
The photos which I was pleased to get with my bridge camera achieved my aim of just getting a chance for a few more photos of the youngsters I hope to coincide some of my bridge camera days in coming months with seeing one here or the cathedral as happened in July and August for me at the cathedral in 2019. Its been an honour to photograph a young Peregrine at both sites this month and I feel extremely lucky to have had this alongside just seeing the birds. The photos allow me to read the ring and see as they posted it on the cathedral website Peregrine diaries that its the female bird, I didn’t see them together for quite long enough but I would have worked out which was which as the female is bigger in keeping with the adult birds. Amazing moments with these birds, true highlights of my year with the Peregrines so far, wildlife in my working days this year and birdwatching year in general which has been amazing having some days working in the office each week has helped me so much in enjoying seeing these birds in person.
It was blissful eating my lunch in Abbey Gardens in the sun looking at an array of beautiful colourful flowers I took the second picture in this photoset of a beautiful flower bed there. I enjoyed seeing a lovely Grey Wagtail and Blackbirds well including one with worms in its mouth a female which was great in Abbey Gardens too and I heard well and got brief great views of wonderful Swifts in Winchester there are a lot here. A damselfly or demoiselle was great to see in the gardens too. I took the first picture in this photoset of Winchester Cathedral looking nice in the sun and heat at lunch time.
I had a brilliant time seeing flowers cutting through Lakeside to get to the railway station this morning and this evening, pyramidal orchid as the eighth picture in this photoset shows my second time seeing them this year after Martin Down on Sunday and first time at Lakeside this year it was joyful to see them, mallow and crane’s-bill in and around the road entrance, mallow down the road nearby and my first St. John’s-wort flower of the year a great one to see were the standouts. I got a stunning view of a Large Skipper butterfly in the meadows of Lakeside tonight and enjoyed the usual array of birds from home tonight especially Goldfinch like the two in the tenth picture in this photoset one I enjoyed taking and a Blue Tit. I took the ninth picture in this photoset at home tonight like one in Winchester by the cathedral at lunch time showing the pretty fluffy clouds that had developed as the day went on. There was another lovely orange sunset tonight. It was so nice to enjoy the rich green on trees today.

Flying flower This photo is not very classic but I find it interesting enough anyway... And it is guaranteed without any falsification, and even without any reframing. This is a male calopteryx virgo photographed in full flight, about 80cm over a stream ( its seaweeds give that bokeh in the background) and at a distance of about 8 meters. I used my Nikon D500 and Tamron SP 150-600 G2 at 550mm: a focal length equivalent to 825mm on this aps-c camera!!! Given the circumstances, the size, the speed of the subject and the distance, one can consider that it is relatively sharp...
