Thailand Part II

From Bangkok we took a guided tour to some famous sights outside the city: the Maeklong Railway Market, the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, and the Erawan Falls.

Our first stop heading out of Bangkok was at Wat Kalong, a smaller temple in the province of Samut Sakhon. The highlight of this temple was the large statue of Luang Pu Sood, a renowned monk from the temple.

Next we visited a salt field before hopping on a train to ride to the Maeklong Railway Market. This market is very popular for tourists and I had seen many videos of the train narrowly grazing past the market stalls. The safety of this market is questionable however, as it is full of tourists literally standing in front of a moving train and taking photos, but it was still cool to see firsthand. My mom and I stayed in the marked safety zone and watched others narrowly avoid the train while trying to get the perfect shot.

From there we went to a coconut farm for a little break with some fresh coconut water before heading to the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, another popular tourist spot that many people have probably seen online/on social media. Our guide told us not to bother buying anything, as they sold the same things as in Bangkok but at a high markup, so we just enjoyed a boat ride through the market and the nearby canals, looking but not buying.

After leaving the floating market we spent the rest of the day in Kanchanaburi province to visit the Erawan National Park and the waterfalls there. This area is mountainous and the falls spanned seven levels going up the mountain with an accompanying hiking trail. My mom had to stop at a lower level but I pushed myself to make it to all seven levels. The push was worthwhile as the seventh waterfall was the best, and since it was the hardest to get to it was also the most peaceful.

After leaving Erawan our guide took us to a nearby lake with nice views and then we went to another questionably safe area in which we could view a train passing nice and close while on a bridge, marking the end of the tour before returning to Bangkok. While we went to some very touristy places, it was still nice to leave the city and see more of Thailand.

We convinced our guide that leaving at 7:30, a half hour later than our scheduled departure would be ok, so we were able to sleep in!!! I think we need to think of another name for what we are doing because it's not a vacation in the traditional sense of the word.

The hour+ ride through the countryside was made especially interesting by passing through the salt fields once we were near the ocean. They flood fields that look similar to large rice fields with ocean water, then when the water evaporates, they remove the salt layer by layer with the top layer being the cleanest.

This area about 100 km southwest of Bangkok is a plantation area where bananas and coconuts are grown. We went to a local place where they process sap collected from palm tree flowers into palm sugar...really delish and sweet with a coconut underflavor. I was afraid to bring it back partly because it might not make it through customs and partly because I would eat it all.

Another market...the train market, so called because a few times a day the train runs right through the market to deliver products; at those times, the stalls that are on the tracks have to be moved out of the way. This market has everything, but with a concentration of fish and seafood, and is huge, but still much smaller than the one in Bangkok. And there are motorcyclists riding up and down the aisles, besides delivery carts, to add to the confusion and chaos of the atmosphere.

We took another boat ride through the canals to see the country version of water homes. They are much the same but with more space between some of them and more foliage from the plantations behind them. We also saw more human activity, children swimming and jumping into the canal, women standing on the front steps waist deep in water doing the laundry, men and boys repairing broken boards on the houses, as well as a few water monitors, the local alligators, which they say are not dangerous to humans.

The floating market of Damnoen Saduak was crazy...I think I would have appreciated it more had we merely observed from the land side rather than from a boat in the water, but I must say it was a unique experience to be a part of that many boats maneuvering in the small space of a few canals. I don't know if it's called "grid lock" when it involves boats, but it was crazy!!! Another, "ya had to be there" way of explaining the madness.

What was really the most incredible though was that no one got frustrated or angry. If a person on one boat wanted to buy something from a vendor in another boat selling Phad Thai, all the traffic around had to basically stop while the vendor finished with her other customers, then made the boat person's Phad Thai, which could take 5-10 minutes...and EVERYONE was doing the same thing so it was a case of pretty much nothing moving, but a lot of jostling. I think Andy and I were the only impatient ones in the whole market.

On the way back we visited yet another floating market, this time, for locals.

We also stopped at the Jim Thompson house which was lovely and had a nice story to go with it, but we bypassed the official tour and just wandered the lovely grounds of the early 1900's local style mansion which is now a museum with well preserved artifacts.

By the time we got back to Bangkok it was almost 3:00 but Sara wasn't done with "marketing" us yet! Now it was time to see the Chinatown markets and temples (thank goodness you don't have to take shoes off for Hindu temples because I don't think we could have). Here the aromas were distinctly Chinese as opposed to the Thai herb smells we had become used to. AND I tried the disgusting smelling fruit, durian, from a street cart!!! I was so proud of myself...the flavor was sweet and delicious but I wasn't crazy about the texture and stringy parts.

Today we had even less time to shower and change for the hour+ cab ride to our restaurant, Nahm. It was amazing and I once again had tears streaming down my cheeks and blisters on the inside of my lips but I loved every bite...I had larb...thanks to Heidi and Javier in MV I knew what it was and that it would be spicy. I was sad to be eating my last meal in Thailand, but it was a special one with the most delicious dessert.

It was only a 1/2 hour ride back to the hotel where we fell into bed for our 5:00 AM wake up to fly to Bali. Sad to be leaving Thailand.

태국의 국왕을 추모하는 자리는 어디에서든 볼 수 있었다. 맥도날드 키오스크에서도 이런 화면을 볼 수 있다는 것이 놀랍고도 신기했다.

담넌사두억 플로팅마켓은 생각한 것보다 물색이 탁했지만, 방콕을 간다면 꼭 한 번쯤은 해봐야 하는 투어 일정 같다.

The memorials for the Thai king could be seen everywhere. It was surprising and fascinating to see such displays even at McDonald's kiosks.

Although damnoen saduak floating market was a bit more crowded than I had anticipated, it was still enough to have a new experience. If you're visiting Bangkok, it seems like a tour schedule you should definitely try at least once.

Every person has a dream, a dream that can go everywhere. Each of us wishes to be a traveller, explore different places and experience different cultures. Traveling is one of the happiest things especially when we are with our families and friends. As one of the young people, my dream is to go to places where there are beautiful views. As a kid, I have always wanted to visit Thailand. The country above is located in the center of mainland Southeast Asia. This location is far distant, since getting there requires taking a plane. When you arrive at the airport, friendly people will welcome you. Bangkok is the capital and most populous city of Thailand. Thailand is known for its beautiful places, rich culture, and delicious foods. It is a famous destination for tourists from around the world who are seeking a unique, exotic, and adventurous experience. Let's go and explore Thailand!

In the beginning of our journey, let us first know the history and culture of the country. The country was previously known as Siam until 1939 when it was officially renamed Thailand, translating to "Land of the Free". Thailand is said to be a "Buddhist Country" where they believe in and worship only Buddhism. Thai culture is deeply rooted in Theravada Buddhism, which influences every aspect of life. Thai culture is full of unique traditions, exquisite art, outfit, dances and flavorsome cuisine. The arts, including dance, music, and intricate craftsmanship, reflect the country's rich heritage.

The first place we will explore is the "Siam Niramit Show, Journey to the Enchanted Kingdom of Siam." Here you can see the beautiful traditional clothes worn by women and men in Thailand. In Thailand they have a unique method of making Rice Pudding which they say it is yummy, from the picture we can say it is very delicious! In Thailand, Elephant is their National animal and their traditional dancing and stage performances can also be seen here. Second destination is going to their temple. The Temple of the Emerald Buddha. I am sure that all this can only be seen within Bangkok. Here you can see the real golds attached to the temples. When you enter, you must remove your slippers, it is also forbidden to make noise and you must show respect inside their temple. On the outside of the temples is where they worship their Buddha, using orange and yellow flowers, incense and fruits to worship and pay respect to him. The third place we are exploring is the famous Floating Market. They call it "Damnoen Saduak", a famous floating market in their area within Bangkok. Here you can see the people of their country selling various goods. You can find fruits, clothes, street food and even hats and what not. All of this is sold in a boat that goes around their river dedicated for sale. This places is really nice to visit.

The next thing we must go and experience in Thailand is their festival. In Thailand, they have various types of festival, in visiting this place here we get to experience their unique festival located in Chiang Mai and across North Thailand. In going to this place you need to commute for 8 hours if you are in Bangkok. One of my favourite festival is the "Yi Peng Lantern Festival". Yi Peng is also known as "Thailand Sky Lantern Festival". This festival is one of the popular in Thailand. The sky lanterns are called "khom loi" in Thai, which means floating lanterns (Zhao, 2023).

In exploring the place, we discover different people. The people in their country are known as "Thais" and an individual is called "Thai", people there are very friendly and make you feel welcome. The language of Thailand is called "Siamese", when you go there and you are not a native speaker, they can still speak English for you. The cities of Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Ayutthaya stand as testaments to the country's historical significance and contemporary charm, as you can see in the picture above. The city did not lose its brightness even at night, because the enthusiasm of the people brings lighter to the whole city.

After touring every city in Thailand, we feel hunger in exploring every places and now we are heading to eat. The foods in Thailand, this place has some unique cuisine that people will love. Everyone who will visit this country must try their food. Here we can taste the different types of food that is good like Pad Thai, a stir-fried noodle dish mixed with tofu, shrimp, or chicken, seasoned with tamarind, fish sauce, and a medley of toppings like peanuts and lime. The food and taste is different compared to the dish of the Philippines. Their dish is very affordable with prices ranging from 30 baht (47 pesos) to 80–90 baht (126.24-142.24 pesos) restaurant meals can range from 50 to 500 baht (79-790 pesos). It depends on the food, you should try and experience tasting their dish when you go there.

We finally explore the different tourist spot, tradition, culture, and foods in Thailand, So let us know our expenses. In Thailand, this is a budget friendly country, in visiting it we should know the total cost. The flight cost of Philippines to Thailand is ₱11,961. When you arrive to Thailand it can offer a diverse range of expenses, catering to various budgets. Accommodation, foods, and transportation can be affordable. Budget travelers find hotels and street food more cheaper. Transportation costs vary, with local buses and trains being cost-effective, it can range from 4.50-5.50 baht (7.11-8.60 pesos) depending on the distance. A mid-range budget traveler can expect to spend $75 (4,265 pesos) per day in Thailand. This generally means staying at $20(1000 pesos) per person per night accommodations, eating a mix of street and restaurant food, and going on several tours.

In Thailand, when we visit we should give respect to the people living in there. It's essential to dress appropriately when visiting temples and to remove your shoes before entering sacred places. Be cautious with your interactions and language regarding the Thai monarchy. If we notice, their place is clean and cozy compared to other famous ones in the city.

The dos and don'ts when visiting this country; DO show respect to the King, the Royal family & all Buddha images. Dress appropriates in public places, especially when visiting the temples or religious place. Greet people with traditional "Wal" by putting your palms together and bow a little bit. Avoid disrespecting Buddha images, public displays of affection, or speaking critically about the monarchy, which is illegal and offensive to locals.

Overall, all I can say is that Thailand is worth to travel, we get to experience their amazing architecture, foods, culture, people, etc. Thailand is special because it's not just beautiful but also has a really interesting culture and friendly people. Its old buildings tells a meaningful story, and it has unique festivals that amaze people in. It's affordable, rich in culture, and has stunning nature, making it a perfect place for travelers in Southeast Asia.
