There’s something about Amanda and Daniel as a couple in regards to not just Daniel being considered “incorrect” by men for how he performs his gender and how he presents his masculinity, but also. Amanda’s performance of womanhood exists a little to the left of conventional as well. She’s tall, blunt, assertive; she dresses fairly femininely, but she also has to lean in to the “corporate woman” role, which affects her presentation.

Where Daniel’s gone through life getting picked on because he’s perceived as weak or feminine, Amanda’s experience probably involves a lifetime of trying to make herself smaller, softer, more palatable. Trying to dumb herself down into something considered “appropriate.”

It’s an interesting combination for a couple to have, and I don’t (just) mean in a “girlboss and malewife” way. I mean in a “the ways they’re both relating to gender is complex and they probably both carry a bit of bitterness about it” way. And also “they can understand each other, which offers both of them a bit of a reprieve” way.

Written for the @allvalley100 Word Drabble Challenge. This time it was “Aftercare.”

This is my second fill.

Amanda kisses his hand as she rubs his tired body down, but Daniel curls away from the softness of the aftercare. From her.

“Where’d you get this one?” she asks, thumb light on the bruise that spans his entire wrist like a mottled bangle. Or the perverse desire of a possessive hand.

Daniel smiles, his mind racing to a lie. “Johnny. Uses me as a punching bag. You know how he gets.”

“Do I?” Amanda looks up.

Daniel looks away. .

The kitchen is silent and the coffee cold when he gets the text next morning.

Just three words.

Amanda liked being in control. She liked being the cool, rational one, the voice of reason - especially after The Incident in high school. 

It extended to her relationships too. She was always the one setting the pace, making sure they'd only go all in on her say so.

"I think we should go slow," Daniel said when she invited him in after their fifth date.

"We shouldn't move too fast, we have kids," Carmen said after agreeing to go out to dinner.

Huh, Amanda thought, took a deep breath, and decided both times to try to go with the flow.
